Baltic Yachts is a headline partner at The Balearic Superyacht Forum on 24-25 April and Olimpia Corral Bosch, chief operating officer of Baltic Yachts Service & Refit, is one of the experts lined up for the keynote debate. The Forum is a brand new event that brings together a network of leading experts and a carefully curated VIP guest list for high-level discussions about the evolution and future of superyachting in the primary yacht service hub of the western Mediterranean. “The refit business has grown substantially here in Palma, for Baltic Yachts and for the industry in general, and some interesting trends are under way,’ Olimpia says. ’Networks are key and it is important to get together, so I’m looking forward to sharing the insights we’ve learned about the future.” Baltic Yachts will also have a presence at Palma Superyacht Village, from 25 to 28 April. Teams from both the build yard in Finland and the Service & Refit division in Palma will be on hand to discuss new developments and solutions in yachting, and to explore potential projects, at stand No SY30. “Palma Superyacht Village is an essential date in the yachting calendar kicking off the summer season in the Mediterranean with an exceptionally high calibre of visitors,’ says Henry Hawkins, EVP of Baltic Yachts. As always we’re very much looking forward to meeting new clients, catching up with customers and networking with some of our partners.” Meanwhile in Jakobstad, the transformational refit of the Baltic 175 Ravenger is now quite close to completion. The largest full carbon composite sloop in the world is expected to be back on the water in early summer with streamlined exterior styling by the owner’s team including Finnish designer Jarkko Jämsén. Refit works over the past eight months also include major upgrades to her rig, sailplan and sailing systems, a complete interior restyle by Design Unlimited, and some significant enhancements to her already world class levels of onboard comfort. Delivered in 2017 and originally conceived purely as a cruiser, Ravenger has hardly ever been raced but that is quite likely to change in the near future. Her new owner acquired and transformed the 54-metre (175ft) judel/vrolijk sloop after seeing great potential to boost her already impressive performance – she regularly achieved 20 knots-plus in cruising mode – and to optimise her extensively for more performance orientated sailing.

Ravenger’s mast has been rebuilt to support a new, significantly more powerful sailplan with a square-top mainsail and a triple headsail configuration, plus larger code and offwind sails. Her bow has been modified, her bowsprit extended by 1.5m, her headstay replaced and running backstays fitted with deflectors. New Harken winches deliver much faster line speeds as well as a combined weight saving of close to three tonnes. The exterior restyle includes a new styling for the hardtop bimini that shelters the midships passenger cockpit, a subtle but extensive repaint and new bespoke helm pedestals with an additional bimini above. Baltic Yachts also restyled the bow and bowsprit, replaced metal surfaces in the cockpit with teak, and worked on many small functional and cosmetic details.

The interior refit includes reconfiguring the yacht’s two-level saloon, replacing the piano area with a breakfast bar, and changing the finish of surfaces throughout all guest areas including the master cabin. Dark stained oak is now prominent and she has new cabinets, ceiling panels, bookshelves, floorboards and more. The stand-out feature of her original design and construction, the large fold-out balcony platforms in the saloon and owner’s cabin – a world first in a sailing superyacht – have been preserved. The refit works are led by two of Baltic Yachts’ senior project managers, Mikael Nyberg and Tommy Johansson. ‘Another focus of this project is enhancing her noise reduction solutions ensuring they remain leading edge by implementing all the knowledge we have gained in recent projects,’ Tommy explains. ‘She was state of the art then, but there have been some big developments since she was delivered. For example, we have made a new bedding mount for the entire interior and installed a complete new fastening system for ceiling panels.’ No changes are needed to the yacht’s technical systems other than installing some new, more power-efficient pumps. The yacht’s crew have used the refit as an opportunity to fully service all existing systems, working closely alongside Baltic Yachts’ in-house technicians. ‘This close cooperation has benefits both ways,’ Mikael says. ‘We learn a lot by having experienced and knowledgeable crew like them in the yard.’ ‘The boat is entering a new phase of her life,’ Mikael says. ‘With this refit we are ensuring she is fit and ready for the next challenges that await her, be they on the race course or exploring off the beaten track.’

Baltic Yachts at the Palma Superyacht Village 2022

baltic yachts service & refit

The strategic importance of Baltic Yachts’ Service & Refit operation in Palma de Mallorca was strengthened recently as a new 800m² workshop facility and warehousing were opened and its expanding 26-strong workforce marked almost a decade of active presence in the Mediterranean’s superyacht hub.

Our Service & Refit team, supported by Sales and Marketing will be on hand at the Palma Superyacht Village 2022, the re-vamped superyacht show forming part of the Palma International Boat Show.

The show will run from 28 April – 1 May in the Moll Vell port area, a short walk from the iconic old city centre. Visitors are welcome on Baltic Yachts’ Service & Refit Stand Number SY30 to discuss their needs and we look forward to seeing you!

Also on show in the Superyacht Village will be the spectacular Baltic 112 Path and Baltic 175 Pink Gin, both exhibited by Fraser. Show attendees can arrange to visit these yachts by making an appointment at the Fraser stand SY15, or contacting the broker via its website www.fraseryachts.com

The presence in Palma of Baltic Yachts’ Service & Refit, under the guidance of Matthew Lester, is seen as crucial for future development as increasing numbers of yachts demand high quality service, refits and future-proofing, backed by the unmatched reputation Baltic Yachts enjoys.

Situated in the STP shipyard, Baltic Yachts’ Service & Refit has expanded its local infrastructure which now comprises dedicated workshops and a new warehouse inside the shipyard itself, administration offices directly outside STP’s gates and a new 800m² multi-department workshop facility in the Son Castillo area of the city.

“The strengthening of our infrastructure in Palma will allow us to further develop what we can offer in the service and refit sector to the increasing number of yachts looking for really efficient project management, transparency and fast turnarounds,” said Matthew Lester.

Baltic Yachts’ Service & Refit works closely with the yard in Finland which celebrates its 50th anniversary next year and constantly feeds the Palma base with expertise, personnel and new technology. Key to the Palma operation’s success is the broad internal skill base formed in part by captains and engineers who have first-hand experience aboard large yachts.

Current ongoing projects include a refit on the Swan 115 Jasi, the fitting of a new hardtop bimini for the Baltic 175 Pink Gin and a major refit on a Baltic 43 which is about to begin its first season under new ownership.

Meanwhile, back in Finland work is continuing apace on a number of projects including the Baltic 110 Custom, the hull of which has just been released from its mould, and the Baltic 67PC-03 which has been trucked from its main build site at Bosund to Baltic’s waterside facility in Jakobstad in readiness for launching and sea trials this spring and summer.

Work also continues on the ultra-lightweight Baltic 111 Custom which has been described as one of the most extreme projects that Baltic has undertaken.

BALTIC 46 QUEEN ANNE – REFIT FIRST EVER BALTIC YACHT

The first yacht built by Baltic Yachts was designed by C&C Design in Canada with the interior layout and styling done by our own in-house design team. The Baltic 46 was designed for comfortable living on board and was aimed at the racing fraternity as well as the cruising minded.

This iconic yacht, the Baltic 46 Queen Anne (originally named Diva) returned to the yard, 2022–2023, for a refit and took part in our 50th anniversary celebrations.

HOW IT ALL STARTED

It all began with five young men, who left Nautor to start their own company. The founders had a passion for boats and a determination to learn about and test new technology. Their aim was to build lighter, faster boats.

They decided to base the new company in the small village of Bosund, which had only one phone line back in the early seventies. It was a tough start with snow falling every day as the five constructed the first building shed.

The first design was aimed at competitive ocean racing with careful research into the latest and most effective equipment and deck layout. The need for comfort remained paramount throughout the design process. The large cockpit and clean deck provided the efficiency required for racing and the space for cruising comfort or a dockside party!

The accommodation provided an owner’s cabin aft with twin berths and high quality fittings. Further forward plenty of space, light and good ventilation were afforded to the navigation and galley areas. The saloon provided exceptionally comfortable seating and sleeping accommodation with plenty of attention paid to ventilation and the use of space. The interior trim reflected the use of woodwork in the best Finnish tradition.

AHEAD OF HER TIME

The Baltic 46 was a very advanced product for her time, with a level of technology exceeding many of the serial production yachts seen today. The Baltic 46 design and performance studies were done in the autumn of 1973 and included tank testing various hull models.

The yacht benefitted from a number of innovative features including laminates using sandwich construction and a teak deck thinner than normally seen, but epoxy glued to the FRP deck for durability, weight saving and added strength. She was also equipped with rod standing rigging which until then was only seen on more extreme racing yachts.

HAMBURG BOAT SHOW

Baltic Yachts exhibited Baltic 46 in the Hamburg Boat Show in 1974, which was a huge success.

As a yacht with a competitive edge, the new Baltic 46 had caught the eye of Norwegian Olympic yachtsman Theodor ‘Teddy’ Sommerschield's at the Hamburg Boat Show and a contract was duly signed. Over the following two years, 1975-1976, we delivered no fewer than 43 boats.

ADMIRAL'S CUP 1975

The year after Theodor Sommerschield had taken delivery of Diva in Kiel, the Canadians asked if she could be chartered to join their Admiral’s Cup team. This was the golden age of the iconic international offshore sailing event, raced under the IOR, which in 1975 attracted 57 yachts from 19 nations to Cowes on the Isle of Wight.

Diva was competing against some of the ocean racing greats including the UK’s winning team of Battlecry, Yeoman XX and Noryema, Germany’s Pinta, Rubin and Duva and the USA’s Charisma, Tenacious and Robin. Although the Canadian team performance was inauspicious, it was a great experience according to Teddy Sommerschield’s son Johan, who sailed aboard Diva with Star Olympic silver medalist in Mexico, Per Ola Wiken.

THE ONSAGER FAMILY

Diva was renamed Queen Anne when Anders Onsager’s father Sverre bought the yacht in 1979 and named her after his wife. He inherited a yacht in which a lot had already been invested. Extra winches - 18 in all - a grinder pedestal and an extensive sail wardrobe were all part of the package, and the winches are still in use today!

Now, the next generation is enjoying the special way of life Queen Anne can offer. Anders and his wife sail with their two children Anton and Thilda and, just like Anders, they have grown up with the yacht, have a genuine interest in her and have become very attached to her. Queen Anne will undoubtedly be there for the next generation.

INTERVIEW WITH CURRENT OWNER ANDERS ONSAGER

Before Queen Anne’s current refit was mooted, Anders Onsagers’ original plan was to take part in the Ocean Globe Race, a circumnavigation starting at the end of 2023 similar in concept to the early days of the then genuinely amateur Whitbread Round the World Race. The idea gripped Anders even though Queen Anne would be one of the smallest yachts in the race.
