Bay head yacht club: a comprehensive look at its history, facilities, and financials

Fletcher Irvine

The storied history of Bay Head Yacht Club

A glimpse into the past: origins and evolution.

The Bay Head Yacht Club, often referred to as the 'jewel of Barnegat Bay,' has a rather compelling history that dates back to its founding in 1888. Nestled in the snug harbor of Bay Head, New Jersey, the club was established by local enthusiasts who shared an undeniable passion for yachting and watersports.

During the late 19th century, yachting began to capture the hearts of many Americans. It was during this period of burgeoning interest that visionaries like Captain Charles Reeves of New York and Philadelphia residents laid the foundation of the Bay Head Yacht Club. Their goal was to create a social and recreational hub for yacht lovers and to promote sailing along the picturesque Barnegat Bay.

Remarkably, the club survived the tests of time, weathering storms and evolving trends. During the early 20th century, the club saw many of its facilities modernized and expanded, a testament to its resilience and adaptability. Despite occasional setbacks, the Bay Head Yacht Club remained a cornerstone of the local community.

Milestones and notable moments

There are several key milestones that have shaped the legacy of the Bay Head Yacht Club. One such milestone is its inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places, a recognition that pays tribute to its role in the nautical tradition of the U.S. According to a deep dive into luxury and design article, historic yachts have had a profound influence on today's vessel innovations, and clubs like Bay Head Yacht Club play a crucial part in preserving this heritage.

Member-exclusive amenities

Becoming a member means access to all these amazing amenities. From programs offering sailing lessons to social activities for all age groups, the yacht club is more than just a facility; it’s a community.

Yearly initiation fees, fiscal transparency, and member satisfaction are focuses for staying in good standing with the community and the IRS. For those curious about the specifics, be sure to peek here to get a sense of why historic aspects still hold a timeless appeal.

Financial health and transparency: Bay Head Yacht Club's fiscal data

Financial insights: balancing the books at bay head yacht club.

The honor of nautical heritage isn't the only facet that Bay Head Yacht Club excels at. Financial health and transparency are just as crucial. With an emphasis on maintaining a balanced fiscal portfolio, the club ensures that both members and the community see where their contributions are going.

Tax forms and nonprofit status

As a nonprofit organization, Bay Head Yacht Club files an IRS Form 990, a public document that details various aspects of their financial activities. This form is critical in providing transparency regarding revenue, expenses, and the allocation of resources. According to the 2021 filings, the club's total assets amounted to $16.3 million, with total revenue reaching approximately $4.5 million. These numbers signify robust financial management, stewarded under the keen eye of General Manager Holly Bilotti and Controller James Cadranell .

Revenues, expenses, and net income

The club garners revenue from various streams, including initiation fees, membership dues, and program services. In the fiscal year 2021, revenue from initiation fees alone was $1.2 million, while program services generated $2.7 million. Their investment income added another $300,000 to the coffers. Balancing these streams ensures that the club can meet its obligations and provide top-tier services to its members.

Expenses are another critical area. In the same fiscal year, total expenses amounted to $3.8 million, covering everything from employee salaries to maintenance of facilities and hosting events. This leaves the net income at $700,000, which is reinvested into the club to enhance the facilities and club programs.

Contributions and community programs

One of the essential functions of the Bay Head Yacht Club is its contributions to the local community. In 2021, program services and community contributions accounted for over $250,000. This encompasses support for local sailing programs, upkeep of the Barnegat Bay , and various charitable activities.

Asset management: total and net assets

Managing assets efficiently is key to the club's long-term sustainability. As of the latest fiscal year, the club's total assets were valued at $16.3 million, while their net assets—calculated by subtracting liabilities from total assets—stood at $12 million. This prudent asset management ensures the club's continued appeal and functionality.

Initiating transparency: a key to trust

Transparency is more than just a buzzword at Bay Head Yacht Club; it's the foundation of their financial health. By publicly sharing their financial data, from IRS filings to detailed revenue breakdowns, the club builds trust among members and the broader community. For an institution that has been around for over a century, this commitment to openness is a significant reason behind its lasting success.

This comprehensive approach to financial health ensures that Bay Head Yacht Club remains a thriving, sustainable organization, offering unparalleled facilities and programs to its members.

Membership and initiation fees at Bay Head Yacht Club

Exclusive membership perks and initiation fees.

Joining the Bay Head Yacht Club isn't just about the prestige; it's also about accessing an array of exclusive perks and top-notch facilities. For prospective members, the initial step involves paying initiation fees, which currently stand at $20,000. This one-time fee grants access to the club’s iconic services and events held throughout the year.

Annual fees and what you get

Once you're in, the annual membership fees are around $5,000. These fees cover the upkeep and enhancement of the club's amenities, ensuring you get the best experience possible. Members can enjoy the clubhouse, dining services, sailing lessons, and much more, all designed to foster a vibrant social and recreational environment.

Tax implications and financial transparency

As a nonprofit organization, Bay Head Yacht Club makes its fiscal data publicly available. According to its IRS Form 990, the club had total assets of approximately $15 million in the last fiscal year. This includes cash, investments, and property value. The club's net income after expenses and investments was reported to be positive, reflecting sound financial health.

Understanding program services and contributions

It's important to highlight that the club's revenue isn't just from fees. Program services, contributions, and investment income also play significant roles. For instance, charity events and sponsorships add a considerable amount to the club's annual revenue, underscoring its dedication to community involvement and philanthropy.

The impact of fees on member experience

Initiation and annual fees go far beyond simple access costs; they fund the overall enhancement of member experiences. Holly Bilotti, the general manager, emphasizes, "Every penny from the fees goes into maintaining and upgrading our facilities, ensuring our members always have unparalleled experiences."

From a fiscal perspective, they operate with financial prudence, ensuring that all fees, including initiation fees for new members, are well accounted for. For the fiscal year ending in June 2022, their data show total revenue of $5.3 million, of which a significant portion is directed towards maintaining and enhancing their facilities, such as the clubhouse and marina.

Bay Head Yacht Club

The Bay Head Yacht Club was established on September 8, 1888 “to promote yachting and rowing and to foster athletic sports upon the water.”  Bay Head was then emerging as a popular seaside resort that attracted prominent families from Philadelphia and New York. BHYC members were active participants in early sneakbox and catboat racing on the shallow waters of Barnegat Bay. The first clubhouse was built in 1889 on pilings at the head of Barnegat Bay. The modest building was surrounded by marshes and reached from land by boardwalks. In 1914 the club was a founding member of the Barnegat Bay Yacht Racing Association; that summer, a BHYC sailor won the first BBYRA championship. In 1928, the current clubhouse was built to accommodate a growing membership. Since then, Bay Head sailors have won more than 175 championship flags in classes ranging from E Scows to Barnegat Bay’s splendid wooden A Cats. BHYC’s campus is a key site in Bay Head’s historic district, including two buildings separately listed on the National Register as contributing structures within the historic district.

Stories from Bay Head Yacht Club

Today the Bay Head Yacht Club has a vibrant membership of families who enjoy active sailing programs. The Club is proud to continue its leadership in the sport of sailing. The Club is located at the northern terminus of Barnegat Bay in New Jersey, where several sailing Olympians and world champions have competed.

How Much is a Yacht Club Membership? 3 Common Price Ranges

Dinner table set onboard a yacht with the text "how much is a yacht club membership?" superimposed over the image

The cost of an annual yacht club membership can vary widely depending on several factors, such as the location of the club, the amenities offered, the exclusivity of the membership, and the size of the yacht being accommodated. We’ve compiled a set of guidelines below to help you estimate what you can expect to pay for an annual yacht club membership.

Local or Less Exclusive Yacht Clubs

Afternoon party at a local yacht club

These clubs might offer basic amenities such as docking facilities, a clubhouse, and some social events. Annual fees can range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. Membership fees could be as low as $500 to $2,000 per year.

Mid-Range Yacht Clubs:

Mid-range yacht club facility

These clubs may offer more extensive amenities, including high-quality dining facilities, repair and maintenance services, fitness centers, and a busy calendar of social and boating activities. Annual fees for these clubs can range from $3,000 to $10,000 or more.

Prestigious or Exclusive Yacht Clubs

Yacht party during sunset among members of a prestigious yacht club in Miami

The most exclusive yacht clubs, often located in prime locations with extensive facilities and services, can have annual membership fees that are significantly higher. These can range from $10,000 to $30,000 or more per year, with some of the most elite clubs costing even more. Additionally, these clubs might have initiation fees that can range from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

It’s also important to note that many yacht clubs have additional costs beyond the annual membership dues. These can include initiation fees for new members, monthly minimum spending requirements at the club’s facilities, and additional fees for docking, storage, and maintenance services.

Additional Considerations

Some yacht clubs require yacht ownership as a prerequisite before being accepted into the club. Hence, while the yacht club membership itself might only be between $500 and $2,000, the true price of a yacht club membership might be tied to the cost of ownership of your yacht as well.

Bottom Line: Simply Ask If Interested

If you’re interested in joining a yacht club, make a list of yacht clubs that you might be interested in joining, and reach out to them via email or phone to get the most accurate and up-to-date information. Most yacht club members are quite friendly and are willing to help those who are interested in joining.

We wish you good luck in your yacht club search, and hope that you were able to find this article helpful.
