1980 C&C 40 boat for sale
The C&C 40 is one of the most popular Canadian made Racer/Cruiser ever built. Its well known for having a great balance of sailing performance and speed for the race course combined with all the appropriate cruising amenities to make long voyages comfortable and safe.
The current owners have had Starlady for over 25 years. They have been to Mexico and back, all over the Pacific North West and their pride of ownership is obvious when you enter this well cared for vessel.
Starlady has been upgraded as needed over the years including a new Westerbeke engine in 2013, Nova Cool refrigeration added in 2014, Campbell Sailer Propeller in 2015, and Simrad chart plotter MNS8 in 2016.
Starlady is rigged for offshore travel including a Monitor wind vane, radar arch with Furuno 16mi radar, 150 watt solar panel, wind turbine and ham radio.
A true four season cruiser with full cockpit enclosure, also has plenty of creature comforts with a full galley, Force 10 BBQ, Fab-All, balanced draft diesel heater, cockpit cushions and plenty of berths for visiting family and friends. With lots of spare parts and most of the tools you will need Starlady is ready to go.
Starlady is an ideal boat for a couple ready to go cruising in the Pacific Northwest.

Broker Remarks
1990 Moody 346 designed by Bill Dixon for sale. A great family cruiser offering good sailing characteristics coupled with an easy and accommodating layout below the decks. Very large double aft cabin, with vanity unit incorporating inset sink complete with pressurised hot and cold water as well as a double foreward berth make it ideal for a family or two couples. The main difference between this model and the Moody 34 is the addition of a transom bathing/ boarding platform. PARADOX is the sought after bilge keeled version making her capable of exploring creeks and shalower anchiorages. A replacement engine (2012) makes this a very attractive proposition. A very poplular and highly regarded cruising yacht with a supprisingly large aft cabin for a boat of this size. Currently ashore in South Devon.

Westerly made 300 of the Discus (more than the Westerly 33 ketch that it superseded) and many of these boats can be found in the Med or cruising further afield. The Discus holds the record for the fibre glass yacht sailed furthest above the Arctic Circle (Bob Shepton on Dodo's Delight), another testament to the strength of the hull and its sea-keeping qualities. Built in two distinct versions between 1980 and 1984, with different deck mouldings, the Westerly Discus is a solid and very seaworthy cruiser. The hull continues the style of earlier Laurent Giles Westerlys, with the same distinctive bow knuckle seen on Centaurs and other smaller designs. This one’s hull gleams and she is now been taken out of the water this October. So ideal for anyone wishing to have a survey.

The accommodation is very well planned, spacious and airey. The sapele hardwood has very good longevity qualities and is one of the best for resisting moisture damage. It has a warm colour creating a lovely ambience. The saloon table when open spans over to each saloon berth and allows for entertaining friends and family. Port and starboard saloon seats convert to 6’2” berths and have their original lee boards. So this vessel has been looked after very well over the years. The video will show more detail regardless layout. All cushions seemed very comfortable too.

Broker's Comments
These boat details are subject to contract.
This Westerly Discus has been in the same caring ownership for 24 years now. She has a large cockpit with a large wheel, plenty of seating and an elongated spray hood going over the deck bridge - which provides a cosy area that’s protected from the elements.
You will see from the videos how good she looks and how much space she has to offer.

Pros and Cons of the Bilge Keel (5 Surprising Benefits)
As far as sailboats go, you won't see that many bilge keel designs - at least compared to full or bulb keels. The design has a lot to offer though, despite its supposed drawbacks that are often just a historical stigma and aren't an issue in modern designs. So let's have a look at five biggest pros of bilge keels that might make you a fan after all.
So what are the advantages of bilge keels? The bilge keel allows you to park your boat on tidal beaches. It can stand upright when onshore for maintenance, making it easier to maintain. It has a lower draft resulting in better accessibility of shallow areas. It also reduces roll, resulting in more comfort on board.
Let's have a closer look at these so that you understand all their possible applications.
On this page:
Closer look at bilge keel design, bilge keels can be safely beached, bilge keels have a shallow draft, bilge keels provide more roll stability.
First of all, let's define a bilge keel because it is one of those terms oftentimes used wrongly. Generally, a bilge keel is simply nothing but a series of fins on the bottom of the hull that aspire to counter the boat's roll.
It is then, as you see, primarily a device with stability as its purpose. There are usually two bilge keels on a boat, one for each side, but you can sometimes encounter boats with four or even more bilge keels - though this is usually the case with large vessels, such as cargo ships.
The bilge keels are surprisingly plentiful on many boats, be it private or commercial vessels, since stability is often lacking on motorboats and this is an elegant, simple and sturdy solution. The fins aren't large in width, not protruding outwards much, so construction and use wise, it is a non-demanding design.
On sailboats though, the story is a bit different. Since the bilge keel's function there is not just that of a stabilizing device, but also has to fulfill the function of a keel, they tend to be longer, resulting in legs of sorts.
Also, I have yet to see a bilge keel sailboat with more than two keels, as can be the case with motorboats.
The sailboat bilge keels are also narrower, measuring from back to front.
If you are still uncertain about the form of this design, check out our article about various keel types that talks more in depth about this topic and also mentions the bilge keels.
Check our overview of all keel types, including diagrams .
And that brings us to the first advantage.
Given the length of sailboat bilge keels, and the fact that they actually go beyond the lowest point of the hull, a boat with bilge keels can stand upright on flat surfaces. This benefit is known by the manufacturers, so the keels are constructed sturdily enough so that this will be possible without the fear of the keels breaking off.
In fact, if you google a 'bilge keel sailboat', most of the images you will encounter are those of beached boats - this feature is just that awesome.
The benefit here is undoubtable. The ability of a boat to stand upright while aground is something that extends your possibilities exponentially.
Your boat can stand flat on a beach if that is where you decide to spend the night. This is something many keelless boats, or those with keels that are retractable, take advantage of. And it is something that makes a sailor's life much easier, especially in low tide areas.
If you are a beginner and are rightfully afraid of anchoring, especially in areas with unfavorable seabed, imagine all those fears vanishing. Not a bad thought.
The ability to park the boat on beaches when the tide is low, with no need for anchoring or marinas, makes this a popular choice in places with shallow waters. It also makes for substantially calmer nights.
But the benefits extend beyond sailing itself. A bilge keel also means that when you need to store the boat on shore, whether for the sad, off-season times or for repairs, you will have a way easier time than the fin keel folks. No need for legs to hold it in place, also, gone are the worries that the external legs haven't been fastened well and your boat will fall over.
This can reduce your aground costs significantly, whether you are in a marina or store the boat in your garden.
The same thing goes for transportation, as trailering a boat that, on its own, stands upright, is much easier and eventually also cheaper, than if you have to support it externally.
A definite advantage of a bilge keel design is the lower draft. A lower draft will come in handy of course when sailing in shallow areas, like the British coastal waters, when going on lakes or the occasional river.
When cruising through coastal waters, the ability to care less about the draft adds to one's peace of mind. And anchoring becomes a bit easier since you can afford to venture into shallower arrears close to the shore, which makes finding a good spot for the anchor and attaching the boat to the shore with lines easier.
Then there are marinas with limited depth, which effectively disqualifies some boats from entering.
But just as was the case with the boat's ability to stand on its own, the shoal draft benefits don't end there - when ashore, these boats are easier to maintain, both for less need of support and for the fact that you can reach the hull easier without much scaffolding. Putting that fresh coat of antifouling paint on your boat just became much easier.
The same goes for transportation - if you want to trailer your sailboat, it is much easier to do so when the boat is shorter in height.
All in all, the advantages of a lower draft are a chapter of its own, no need to explore it further here. If you like what you are reading, have a look at our article about boats with lifting keels, the ultimate solution when it comes to shallow draft. It explains the benefits that mostly apply in bilge keel designs too.
Learn everything there is to know about lifting keels
Of course, just like is the case with bilge keels, there are almost always performance or functionality drawbacks when it comes to shoal draft designs, so one has to weigh the pros and cons.
But if you live in an area or sail in a way that could use the lower draft, look into bilge keels for sure. As any sailor in such an area will confirm, the benefits tend to outweigh the drawbacks.
As mentioned in the beginning, bilge keel, as a design, came to existence for the purpose of stabilizing the roll. The fins simply act as a counter to the rolling motion.
And although this function is most taken advantage of on motorboats, where the narrower keels oftentimes run alongside the whole hull, the bilge keels on sailboat have a similar effect.
So when it comes to comfort onboard, you will see a definite improvement. Of course, many sailors enjoy all the rolling motion that comes with sailing, but when it is time to use the heads, cook lunch, or basically do anything where a bit more stability is welcome, one will certainly appreciate the bilge keel.
So given all these benefits, why are there not that many bilge keelboats around?
Well, one of the biggest reasons for owning one is if you live in an area with large tides and a coastline that can take an advantage of them. Which makes this whole thing mostly a British matter.
Or French. But the French historically seem to prefer lifting keels a bit more, so the bilge keel tradition isn't there as much.
Then there is the fact that you won't see bilge keels on larger boats. They are the most popular in models around 20 - 30 feet, so if you prefer something bigger, you are almost always excluded from this design choice.
And lastly, there is the performance stigma. Which is where things get a bit unfair. A bilge keel design has way more wetted surface than a fin keel, for instance, so your speed will suffer.
Also, although rolling motion is reduced, unfortunately, so is the stability, since bilge keels simply don't reach as far down.
But the modern designs are way better performance-wise than what used to be the case years ago. The issue is that the case years ago was so drastic that the stigma is still carried to this day.
Bilge keel boats were for the slow folk, fishermen, who cared for stability and the ability to beach their boat when the day is over - and not for performance. In the minds of sailors, a bilge keel means a slow, ill-performing boat.
All in all though, unless you are a racer or a speed cruiser, you don't have to worry about performance. That is if you stick with the modern designs. So if the benefits sound good to you and you know you could take good advantage of them, go for it.

Hello Matej
Thank you for taking the time to put this webpage on net. I found it very informative. It was what I was looking for. Thank you 👍
Clinton Morton Toowoomba QLD
A boat with bilge keels does not have a bigger whetted surface. A finn keel of they same ballast would have to be twice as deep. When a bilge keel boat heels the keel becomes more effective in reducing leeway where a finn keel becomes less effective at reducing leeway. The leeward keel rises in the water and becomes more effective in righting the boat.
Impossible page to read with the amount of pop ups. Good luck !!

Roberts 36 Bilge Keel....good or bad buy?
- Add to quote
Good day guys, Ive spent so many hours reading these forums but this is my first post so hello one and all. I thought I would ask the heads wiser than my own out there a bit of advice. Myself and my partner have a plan for an extended voyage in the next few years. Last year in N.Z I bought a 24ft Achilles sloop and began learning how to sail, we have since moved to Australia and are undertaking RYA courses. I see undertaking a voyage a bit of an apprenticeship, Ive learned the basics of sailing, I read as many books as I can get my hands on to increase my knowledge and try to learn as much about the different styles of boats as I can, and gradually we are building our knowledge and experience. Ive done the return leg of the Brisbane to Gladstone race, We have plans to crew on an off shore trip next year and have chartered a bareboat which was awesome. While looking at 'boat porn" as my missus calls it I have came across a Bruce Roberts 36 steel Bilge keel. It was professionally built apparently, there is minor rust (mostly surface) from what i could see on a quick crawl about but it had good access. The rig looks in decent shape, there is a volvo 33hp diesel which has has the gearbox removed for recon (done but not installed) but the guys assures me the motor is good and is happy to re install the gearbox if I pull the trigger so to speak. It is pretty rough inside and out mainly cosmetic but it very much bare bones. He is keen to move it as he's moving interstate and its cheap, dirt cheap. But I know cheap can quickly escalate into a bloody headache. I do not mind a project, ive estimated what I think i will need to spend and added 50% and I think its still cheap. My goal for this boat is just to get out on the water until the budget and timing allows me to find the boat of my dreams. I dont think the Bilge keel is what I want for my long term plans, but I want to be sailing and I think a bit of a project would be a good basis for fixing things later on as my mechanical knowledge is in its infancy. Does anybody know much about the Roberts 36 Bilge keel? Ive read about the pros/cons of the keel design but cant find much info about this particular model. I think I might take a punt but dont want to buy a tub. Any advice / input would be great. Cheers, Mark
Thanks for your input, and you are probably right, I maybe just needed to be told, but I do like a punt. I was thinking I could slap a coat of anti foul on and have a couple of years fishing and diving for very little money, im not bothered about the cosmetics and love a bit of camping on the water. If it was a long fin keel version I would probably have bought it by now. Would love to here from any one that has one???
Mark, it is not the design which is a problem here, but the condition of the boat and the fact that it is a steel hull. A neglected steel boat presents a huge risk to a buyer. A lot of serious structural problems can only be identified by a very professional survey including a detailed ultrasound survey, or they will only be discovered once repairs start. A neglected steel hull can keep on corroding very fast even after getting painted with good paint unless you prep all of the surfaces 100% correctly. Sure, anything can be fixed, but a boat like that would be very expensive to bring back. In your case, forget steel, forget wood. Get a decent fiberglass boat and have fun sailing, not slaving away fixing old rusty boat.
I had an old steel boat, I bought it for little money and sailed it for seven years. I think I was lucky in that it was a corten steel hull which is a little more corrosion resistant. Before I bought it I looked hard INSIDE the boat because steel boats die from the inside. So either pay a pro to do an ultrasound or buy a scope and go pry into it's bowels. Bruce Roberts boats are many things but fast is not an adjective usually used to describe them. Add to that the handicap of bilge keels and you have to decide if you can live with a slow boat that does not go to weather. I cruised very happily on my 4ktsb but you have to decide if you can put up with that. By the way I don't know the Aussie market but in the USA and close by it is a buyers market. a 42 ft fin keel steel ketch in sailable condition was sold for less than 10k US. So unless it is very very cheap AND the hull is reasonable AND you can put up with everybody else passing you on passage I would keep looking.
There is nothing wrong with a bilge keeler they are very practical you can beach them easily it saves you slipping fees and a bit of surface rust is no bother either just wire brush it off rust kill it then smother it with a good primer and topcoat.I own a fifty year old steel boat and if you keep on top of the rust it is not a problem.
They may not sail too flash but for a barrier reef cruiser they have a lot of good points and it would be better to learn your skills in a forgiving boat than a paper thin ex racer. There are lots of roberts designed boats around here and they get used a lot.
I would agree with the majority of comments here. I used to own a Roberts 45 Ketch and would not buy a Roberts again. Roberts + steel and I would definitely keep looking. A big issue at the moment in Oz is resale value. If you did purchase this yacht and spent $20-50k on fit out / fixing up it is likely that you would not recover this money when you sold. Ilenart
For banging around coral waters, steel is far superior to plastic, and far more forgiving of mistakes. They will survive for weeks in conditions that will destroy a plastic boat in minutes. Without you posting photos or connections, it is hard to comment on an individual design. Read Jimmy Cornell's book "Modern Ocean Cruising", in which he interviews several circumnavigators, who said they would by far, prefer a metal boat for future cruising. Some had already started metal boats. It is often the preferred choice of experienced cruisers. Most of steels critics are armchair critics, with no personal experience in the material, or little long term cruising experience . Two of my 36 footers, one with a single keel ,and one with twin keels , had a race. They were matched on all points of sail except to windward, where the single keel had only a slight advantage. The owner of the twin keeler, having just returned from a cruise around Cape Horn and the Aleutians , was very happy with his decision to go twin keels and a steel hull. You can do a search under Silas Crosby to find his blog, a great read.
Hi Mark, I want to sell my Robert's 36'steel yacht. It has a full length keel and is cutter rigged. Here are some pearls of wisdom. Steel is strong and if maintained will last as long as a fibreglass boat. Steel can be easily repaired if you acquire basic steel working skills eg welding and using an angle grinder. As a first boat it is a good option as you are more likely to run aground etc. As far as bilge keels go, the advantages are shallow draft ie more anchorages accessible and a less rolly ride. Disavantage is it will be a slug to windward, hence the need for a large reliable engine. ( Gentlemen don't go to windward anyway!) In my Robert's 36'my wife and offsprings have crossed Bass Strait 6 times, cruised around Tasmania and been as far north as Broken Bay. The long keel gives good directional stability i.e easy to steer and we always feel safe. Hope this helps, Cheers, Rob.

Broker's Comments
The Leisure 27 was designed with over 6' of headroom throughout and a wide beam to provide excellent accommodation space in a cruising yacht.
This example appears to be tidy, having been maintained over the years. and lightly used. The rig is set-up for ease of handling and the machinery provides ample power for manoeuvring under engine.
The accommodation offers spacious comfort, with a C shaped saloon, with plenty of seating and a dinette which converts to a double berth. With a galley and a separate heads and a forward double cabin and plenty of storage, ideal for families.
The yacht would be suitable for a range of uses, including shallow waters, family / group sailing and coastal passage making. When I visited the boat I was impressed by its deep, cockpit and plenty of accommodation for it's size.
