Description of Erith Yacht Club
Welcome to the Erith Yacht Club , where we provide RYA (Royal Yachting Association) courses to all levels and abilities as well as a fantastic sailing club that happily welcomes new members. Using our modern fleet of training boats and comfortable clubhouse, our courses are the best way to get out on the water and to learn how to sail. We are fortunate to be situated on a wide stretch of the river within easy distance of London and the M25 making us a convenient location for the majority of our sailors. All our courses are run by qualified instructors and there are opportunities to keep sailing at the various events taking place at the club. We can also welcome you to the Erith Yacht Club – the Premier Sailing location on the tidal River Thames.
Our sailing and racing takes place of cruisers and dinghies and we participate in exciting inter-club races with other clubs along the Thames.

Erith Yacht Club
Erith Yacht Club is a family friendly Sailing club on the tidal Thames. We do all types of sailing - cruising, racing, yachts, dinghies.

Around Erith, 1985
My photographic excursion on the lower Thames continued towards Erith, its slow pace suiting both my photographic needs and those of my six year old assistant, busily taking his own pictures, though I think he found the wide open spaces defeated him.
Getting towards Erith, past the Yacht club we had to divert from the river along a busy and dusty road, rather dreary walking, with just the occasional interesting but unphotographable distant glimpse of riverside industry. In 1985 there was no Thames Path (I think it was a few years later that I got an early draft and contributed some comments to the consultation), but now it still has to follow more or less the route we took.
I had the Ordnance Survey maps, which marked most of the paths; some were shown as public rights of way, while many other roads and tracks on the map were behind gates. Often more useful in finding my way were the large scale street-maps which had the advantage of showing road names, though not always paths.
At that time you could only return to the riverside right in the centre of the town, with parts of the riverside still very much a closed off working river. Now you can walk back to the east a little, and some of what was industrial land is now a ‘superstore’.
From the riverside path there were views of the riverside industry on the same bank upstream at Belvedere. We walked a little way towards these before making our way back to the station for the train home.

Erith Yacht Club
Erith Yacht club is a member run yacht club. This means that not only does membership give access to the amazing facilities at Erith also the ability to develop and shape the future of the club through volunteering opportunities and your membership vote.
Benefits of membership
Becoming a member means that you can use Erith Yacht Club as the base for your sailing on the River Thames and further afield and use all of the Clubhouse, launch, recovery, maintanance, boat and equipment storage facilities with 24 hour/seven day a week access to the club.
Membership also means you can:
- Develop your sailing and boat maintenance skills through organised club events
- Utilise the full range of facilties including moorings , storage and workshops
- Benefit from club member discounts on training and products sold by the club and learn useful sailing, boat handling and maintenance skills from other members in formal and informal situations
- Vote at the AGM on key decisions regarding the club including equipment purchases, fees and charges and election of officers who help run the club.
- Be elected as a club officer such as Hon Commodore, Vice Commodore, Secretary, Treasurer or General Committee member.
- Receive regular club and sailing updates via email and social media
- Be an Officer of the Day during organised club events
- Volunteer and represent the club at activities
- Access additional information on the club website including member directory to assist organising sailing activities
- Get involved in all of the social and recreational activities at the club including use of our bar and kitchen
Types of membership and fees
We have several types of membership suitable for you, your parter and the whole family including free membership for people under 25. We also support Associate and Upriver memberships for those making more limited use of the club or who are already members of another Sailing club who would also like to sail reguarly at EYC.

Obligations of membership
There are very few obligations in being a member but these do include:
- Paying membership fees on time
- Attending work Sundays (where possible) during winter months
- Following our rules, byelaws and operating procedures
- Courtesy and respect for other club members at the club and online
