Landyachtz Ripper VS Dipper

landyachtz ripper vs dipper

The Ripper has a slightly beefier deck with a kicktail, making it better for freestyle. It’s the type of setup where you could throw an icy slide, then follow it up with a steezy bigspin. The dipper has a flatter deck shape and its smaller 105mm trucks make it turn on a dime.

Let’s start with the different setups they offer…

landyachtz ripper vs dipper

Ripper Setup 1

  • 130mm Polar Bear trucks
  • 63mm 78a Fatty Hawgs.

Ripper Setup 2

  • 155m Polar Bear trucks
  • 60mm 78a EZ Hawgs.

Dipper Setup 1

  • 105mm Polar Bears

Dipper Setup 2

  • 130mm Gen 6
  • 63mm Fatty Hawgs

They ended up sending us “Setup 2” for the Ripper and “Setup 1” for the Dipper.

Before I cover the differences, let’s briefly take a look at the similarities.

Both use traditional philips head 10-32 1.5” bolts.

landyachtz hardware screws

The bearings are the same – Spaceballs built-in spacers with speed rings. Personally, I’m a fan of bearings with the spacers built-in but it’s all personal preference. You might prefer separated spacers, idk.

bear spaceballs bearings

Ripper: Length: 36.9 Width: 9 Wheelbase: 24.9

Dipper: Length: 36″ Width: 8.65″ Wheelbase: 24.29″

Now let’s take a look at the decks because even though they share somewhat similar characteristics, their shapes differ.

landyachtz ripper dipper decks

The Ripper has a kicktail and the Dipper doesn’t. So if you’re planning on doing any freestyle shuv-its, big spins, anything where you need a kicktail, then the Ripper would be the obvious choice.

Both have a rocker profile but the Rippper is more aggressive, making it better for slides. They’re both pretty low to the ground, although I guess that’s subjective based on what you’re used to riding. Honestly, this past couple of years I’ve been so used to surfskates that it was nice being low to the ground for once.

Personally, I enjoyed the Ripper’s deck shape more because I grew up traditional skating and having no kicktail still feels a little weird to me.

Bottom line, the Ripper is beefier, has more aggressive rocker combined with a kicktail and the Dipper is more nimble without any kicktail, pretty flat profile.

Now let’s take a look at the trucks.

Both of the setups use traditional kingpin polar bear trucks and are propped up on ½” riser pads. That’s where they’re similar but where they differ is in the hanger size and bushings.

bear polar bear trucks

Polar Bear 155mm vs 105mm Trucks

The ripper has 155mm trucks with 90a bushings and the dipper has 105mm with 85a bushings.

I’m gonna be honest, I’m not someone who’s super technical when it comes to dissecting parts, so I’m just gonna share the differences I felt while riding, since I think that’s what most of you wanna know.

polar bear 155mm trucks

So the Ripper’s 155mms are obviously wider, making them more stable at higher speeds. For the most part, I was testing these setups on a smooth, lowkey hill that was probably about 12ft wide.

I share this because when I went to turn around, the 155’s barely could make the turn without having to use the kciktail. Whereas the 105s had no issues, they’re much more agile.

polar bear 105mm trucks

If I really wanted to, I could get into a little pumping motion on the ripper, but nothing compared to the Dipper. The Dipper just felt way more surfier and carvey.

I was honestly surprised how much of a pumpy flow I could get into. And I did really enjoy riding it, but again I need a kicktail.

And the final difference between these setups are the wheels. Both obviously use Hawg wheels, but the Ripper comes with 60mm 78a EZ Hawgs and the Dipper 63mm 78a Fatty Hawgs.

Both wheels you can slide but since the 60mm are smaller and have a centerset core, they’re much easier. If you’re gonna be riding on rougher surfaces, and you want something that’s gonna absorb the cracks more efficiently, then I’d definitely recommend the larger, 63mm Fatty Hawgs.

Honestly, you might even wanna consider something bigger than the 63mm if you’re riding in a rougher environment. I tested the 63s and it handle rough terrain fine, but I wouldn’t say it’s the best option.

I don’t have anything bad to say about Hawgs. Their urethane formula is one of my favorites.

hawgs longboard wheels

Which One Is Best For You?

In case you’re still confused about which is right for you, I’ll do my best to summarize.

I think the Ripper is best if you want a beefier deck that offers the ability to do freestyle tricks. This was the one I gravitated more toward because I enjoyed easily being able to slide and then throwing something like a big spin.

But if you’re someone who wants more grip, something more agile, then the Dipper would probably make more sense.

At the end of the day, only you will know which will fit your riding style.

Landyachtz Dipper Fish Longboard

Landyachtz Dipper Fish Longboard The Dipper Fish Longboard is compact yet powerful - ditching the kicktail in favor of a flat tail, a smaller platform and narrower trucks offers you tight, responsive turns that will make everyday skating an enjoyable experience. At 36" long and 8.65" wide, this board is similar to the Ripper, but even more responsive. Its flexy ride and long wheelbase give it a surf-like feel, while the mellow concave and rocker keeps your feet secure and comfortable. Make every ride a thrilling adventure!

FLEX RATING: 7 So, what’s flex and why is it important to a skateboard? In skate-nerd terms, flex is the amount of displacement a deck sees when a specific amount of force is applied to it. Check out our formula to the left! There are a few factors that affect flex, like deck thickness, wheelbase, and the amount of force on a deck. We built a machine and put our entire lineup to the test by applying the exact same amount of force to all our boards and measured the displacement we saw in each. This gives a totally scientific and accurate flex range across our entire line! It’s important to understand flex when choosing a board. Here are some basics: Downhill/freeride skateboards will have less flex because you need a stiff platform to stand on when you’re bombing or gripping a corner at speed. Carving skateboards will have more flex, giving you the ability to sink into your turns and pump or carve with ease. Most cruisers, dance and ATV boards will have less flex for control when doing tricks but just enough to be forgiving when pushing around town. We’ve engineered our boards with the best flex for each style of riding but remember, flex is subjective so get out a see what you like the most! TRUCKS POLAR BEAR 105MM Ideal for the mini cruiser that every skater needs in their quiver. The 105mm Polar Bears are strong, agile, and ready to grip the tightest turns. Sold in pairs. The harder the bushings, the more stable the ride but that results in less agility - our Dinghy, for example, comes with 88a bushings. WHEELS 63MM FATTY HAWGS Made famous as the wheel of choice for our Dinghy completes, Fatty Hawgs are now available separately in a multitude of colours and patterns so you can upgrade your cruiser board today. We use the highest quality urethane to ensure these are the best cruiser wheels available on the market. Get a set and see the difference for yourself.

DESCRIPTION

The Big Dipper is a flexy longboard shape measuring in at 42.2″ long by 9.48″ wide with a wheelbase of 29.8″. It’s made from a 7 ply Maple construction that gives it a responsive, positive flex that returns lots of energy in carves, without feeling soggy and dead. The flex dampens a lot of vibration and combined with the length, it doesn’t notice rough pavement at all. It’s like a freight train, it just won’t stop. We’ve kept the rocker and concave that we love from the Dipper and extended the wheelbase so that it’s nice and stable. 155mm Grizzlies pair perfectly with the longer wheelbase and added width for tight turns and amazing carves. The 63mm Doozies are mega wide and do a great job at sliding when you want them to while simultaneously holding their line when you need grip.

Gen 6 155mm 50 Degree

Redesigned from the ground up and incorporating technology perfected in our high end DH and Freeride trucks, Gen 6 Grizzlies are the best performing cast trucks on the market today. Game changing strength and highly refined steering geometry are just the tip of the iceberg, Gen 6 Grizzlies are available in 3 different hangar widths and 3 baseplate angles so you can customize your truck setup to perform exactly how you want them to. Bushings: 85a

63mm Doozies

These wheels are one heck of a Doozie. They will keep you out of trouble, whether you are on or off the board. They will keep you rolling smoothly over anything in your path, they will obliterate any obstacle that gets in your way, and they will provide you with an amazing feeling on your skateboard. They slide smooth when you want them to slide, and they carry you through corners with lots of grip when you need them to. This is a fantastic wheel for anyone that is looking to add some crackerjack sassafras to their setup.

Spaceballs are our answer to all of your bearing problems.  Never again can you lose your washers, or spacers because we’ve built them into the inner race!  On the functional side, this means your bearings are always mated correctly which negates any bearing-induced chatter.

Got it for the kids to learn on and they loved it. It’s really easy to control and lots of fun to ride. Now I probably have to buy a second one!

Love cruising around on Big Dipper! It just floats and so fun to pump! Super surfy too! Thank you!

amazing board, best cruiser ive ever had

This thing really is like a magic carpet. I've had similar cruising longboards and pintails in the past but this one pretty much feels like what I wished those ones were. The very subtle rocker is just enough to make the board feel chill & relaxed but not so much to make your feet sit at an awkward angle or drastically change the truck response. It has a generous & comfy amount of flex that's neither too springy or soggy. Great amount of foot room without feeling huge. Overall I think I could say this is my favorite deck that I've ever owned in the 40-ish inch range, and I've been riding for 20 years. I have mine set up as a long surfskate with Carver CX trucks & Waterborne Living Water wheels. Feels absolutely amazing!

Flex Ratings

We’ve categorized the stiffness of our boards into 3 main groups, listed below.  The general rule is the faster you’re skating, the stiffer the deck, but this is not universal.

Flexy – Soft and supple flex profile best suited for carving and cruising on longer boards. The bouncy nature of these decks lets you turn deeper and surf your surrounds.

Medium – The do it all of our boards, a perfect balance of stability and carve.

Stiff – From cruisers to downhill boards a stiff flex profile excels in stability and responsiveness.  Whether you’re dipping into driveways or bombing a mountain pass you’ll be down with the stiffness.
