Originally built during the 1992 Olympic Games, it has now assumed a strategic role for the city and provides a major boost to the Catalan coast as one of the first marinas in Spain to specialize in the superyacht sector.

A popular superyacht homeport and the perfect summer destination, set between the cruising grounds of the Western Mediterranean and the Caribbean, Marina Port Vell has in recent years witnessed a major shift in the traditional cruising patterns. Marina Port Vell is the premium Superyacht facility offering over 150 berths and one of the world’s longest quays (440m), which makes it an ideal destination for the mooring of superyachts up to 190m.

Thanks to this new configuration, the marina will boast 55 berths for superyachts, a figure that will increase up to 65 in periods of high occupancy to accommodate the sought after winter berthing demands and the growing popularity of visiting superyachts in high season summer. The plan includes the remodelling of different spaces within the marina, such as; reconfiguring the marina basin, a landscaping project and installation of a new bunkering system. Additionally, a sustainability Master Plan has been introduced to ensure that the marina continues to be a sustainable, safe and innovative infrastructure providing quality services.

Barcelona has established itself as the most important city in the Western Mediterranean. Barcelona has about four different marinas along the city’s coast. Direct Berth operates in two of those marinas, Marina Vela and Marina Port Vell. According to the Knight Frank Wealth Report of 2021 , the Barcelona region welcomed 574 different yachts between January 2015 and June 2020. The arrivals of yachts over 60 meters and 90 meters significantly increased during that period. Marina Port Vell

The award-winning Benalmadena Marina is a mega port located on the Costa del Sol in southern Spain .

The marina has won “The Best Marina in the World” on numerous occasions and offers 1.100 moorings for yachts of all sizes, a large commercial area and a popular sea life aquarium.

Works began on the marina back in 1972 although it didn’t really open up in its current form until around 1996. Since then it has gone from strength to strength.

You can even sign up for fun Spanish cookery lessons at the local culinary school.

The Alicante Marina is located in the city of Alicante on the Costa Blanca in South Eastern Spain and is a large complex devoted to leisure and navigation.

Corralejo Marina is located on the northern tip of the Canary Island of Fuerteventura.

Corralejo offers easy access to the popular Lobos Island and is just a short sail from Lanzarote.

The area is well known for its golden sandy beaches, some of the most popular is just a short drive down the coast and include Playa del Medano, Playa del Pozo and Playa del Viejo. Due to the winds that generally prevail on Fuerteventura, the beaches are perfect for kinds of water sports activities.

20. Isla Canela – Huelva

The Isla Canela marina enjoys an ideal location in the Bay of Cadiz on the southern Spanish coast known as the Costa de la Luz .

Just a hop away from Spain´s neighbour Portugal, the Isla Canela marina is located close to some of the finest sandy beaches in Spain.

The marina is open to smaller boast and yachts with berths ranging from 6 to 24 meters in length and offers a laid-back Tranquille setting for visitors.

Facilities at the marina are second to none and include, floating docks, 24-hour mooring, berthing assistance, a crane, large dry standing and workshop areas, a travel lift ( up to 32 tons ), toilet and shower facilities, entrance barriers and doors, petrol/fuel station, marinas office and shop.

There are a few beach bars and restaurants within a few minute's walk of the marina although, for more shopping possibilities, supermarkets, boutiques, chemists, banks and markets, it is best to head over to the Isla Cristina or the larger border town of Ayamonte.

The Costa de la Luz is blessed with some of the best beaches anywhere in Spain , nearby award-winning beaches include Playa Isla Canela, Playa de los Haraganes, Playa de la Gaviota, Playa Central and Playa de la Casita Azul.

A flexible approach and on-site facilities provide the perfect solution for any yacht, whether they are looking for a brief pit stop, a longer-term berthing option or the ability to conduct a Mediterranean-based refit. Visiting yachts can choose to self-manage projects or engage with a dedicated in-house multi-lingual project management team.

With over 650 refit projects in our group portfolio there isn’t much that our knowledgeable team hasn’t encountered when it comes to the complexities of the refit of a client’s yacht.

Our marina is set in a protected and safe harbour with calm and clean waters and has 48 superyacht berths ranging between 25 and 130 metres for yachts with a maximum draught of 6.5 metres.

From pre-Caribbean or Mediterranean season preparation works or mid-season antifouling, to class survey assistance or pre-purchase surveys, we can assist with all aspects of superyacht care, maintenance or repair, with minimal disruption to your planned season.

Mataró Marina Barcelona®, the nautical base of the north coast of Barcelona na

Located on the western wharf of the port of Mataro, it is an extremely tranquil and safe marina designed to accommodate superyachts from 20 to 60 meters . There are 30 moorings between two quays that are now completely operative with full services. Mataró  is the capital of the Maresme area, also known as the Catalan California. Located merely 30 kilometers north of Barcelona, Mataró is a city which boasts an important cultural patrimony which gives it its own distinct character. The privileged geographical location –the sea on one side, and a coastal mountain range on the other– ensures that Mataró’s climatic conditions are ideal for enjoying the city.

Mataró’s origins date back to the Roman era. This precious legacy can be found in the Torre Llauder Roman village from the first century AC, and the latest discoveries in the centre of the ancient village. Strolling through the streets of the city centre its history can be felt everywhere. This ancient Roman hamlet has Baroque architecture, colonial architecture, as well as outstanding examples of Modernist architecture by one of its most important representatives, Josep Puig i Cadafalch, who was of course from Mataró.

How to watch the America’s Cup from a front row seat

Soak up all the action of the world’s most anticipated sailing event at one of Spain’s most prized superyacht marinas.

Located in the heart of Barcelona, Marina Port Vell is the designated Preferred Superyacht Marina for the America’s Cup . This premier status is no surprise, given its strategic location – just a five-minute walk from the city centre and a 15-minute drive from the airport – and its 151 berths that can accommodate vessels up to 150 metres LOA, including 60 designated for superyachts.

From 22 August to 27 October, Marina Port Vell will be the epicentre of exclusive activities and experiences, under the theme “The Superyacht Marina Experience, the most exclusive atmosphere”. The marina serves as the home base for the British challenger, INEOS Britannia, and visitors will also be able to catch views of the Swiss team. The America’s Cup Experience, an immersive exhibition that delves into the event’s rich history, is just a few minutes from the marina and is a must-see.

Visitors will be treated to a gourmet culinary experience throughout the competition. The Sea Garden space will be transformed into a Mediterranean-inspired restaurant where diners can indulge in a specially curated menu while watching live coverage of the races on a screen and the restaurant’s sea-view terraces. For those seeking vibrant nightlife, the Blue Wave will feature DJ sets while serving an array of cocktails and cold tapas. The Möet & Chandon Terrace will offer a more formal setting with oysters, champagne and panoramic views, while the Estrella Damm Lounge, located in front of The Gallery building, will provide a more casual atmosphere for guests to relax and enjoy the event.

Marina Port Vell has curated an exclusive range of experiences designed to elevate the America’s Cup experience for its guests. The VIP On-Board Experience allows guests to watch the competition on board a Wajer 38 or Wajer 55, each accommodating up to 10 people. Additionally, two VIP areas within the marina will offer the perfect vantage point for the races, paired with exquisite cuisine, concierge services and a live broadcast of the competition. An exhibition on the Catalan Patí will celebrate the region’s maritime heritage, while a striking entrance display will greet visitors with a design inspired by waves and sails.

For those with a penchant for luxury shopping, the marina will host exclusive boutiques featuring renowned brands like Louis Vuitton, Prada, Maui Jim sunglasses and INEOS Grenadier. The official Marina Port Vell boutique, located in The Gallery, will offer America’s Cup merchandise, including items from all competing teams, and there will also be an exclusive collection in collaboration with luxury fashion store Santa Eulalia on Paseo de Gracia.

As the racing competition unfolds over two months, Marina Port Vell is set to become a bustling hub of activity, welcoming more than 110 superyachts, 2,500 owners and guests, 1,500 crew members and thousands of visitors. All this follows a major €20 million transformation project taking place from 2021 to July 2024. This involved reorganising the water surface area, upgrading landscaping and installing an upgraded fuel system. “We’ve also introduced a strong ESG strategy and recently set up a dedicated concierge department to better serve our guests,” Erroz adds. These initiatives are part of a broader effort to position Barcelona as a leading Mediterranean superyacht hub.

CHESTER, CT (WFSB) - Crews responded to a boat fire at the Hays Haven Marina in Chester Monday evening.

The marina, located at 59 Railroad Avenue, said in a post on their Facebook page that the fire was extinguished.

No injuries were reported.

“Thank you to the swift actions of our local fire department. We are assessing the damages. We appreciate everyone reaching out for support,” they said in the Facebook post.

No further information was available.

PORTLAND, Maine ( BDN ) -- The billionaire owner of a megayacht visiting the Portland Harbor this week is so rich he brought along a second megayacht just to house all his expensive toys.

The second vessel, the 217-foot Hodor, was purposely designed to trail the 285-foot Lonian. The Hodor is likely hauling a crew of 20, five smaller boats, an array of jet skis, and a set of four-wheelers for use on land, according to the website Superyacht Fan. The Hodor can reportedly also accommodate a 6-ton helicopter, though none was spotted Wednesday morning.

Both boats, now at Fore Points Marina, are owned by Las Vegas casino tycoon and former Ultimate Fighting Championship CEO Lorenzo Fertitta.

A private, motor-driven pleasure boat longer than 24 meters — or about 80 feet — is usually called a superyacht. But larger vessels over 60 meters — or 196 feet, like Fertitta’s boats — are known as megayachts

Superyacht Fan estimates the Hodor cost $30 million when it was new in 2019 and now costs between $3 million and $5 million to operate and maintain every year. But that astronomical price is a bargain compared to its mothership, the Lonian. The website reckons it was purchased for $160 million in 2018 and costs upwards of $15 million annually.

Fertitta’s pair of ultra-expensive vessels aren’t the only megayachts in town.

Parked at the next slip over is the Cayman Islands-flagged, 242-foot M&EM, which can accommodate 12 guests in six cabins, along with a crew of 19, according to Amels Yachts, the Dutch company which built it in 2022. The M&EM can cruise at 16.5 knots and has a range of about 5,000 nautical miles.

It isn’t clear who owns the M&EM, but according to Vesselfinder, it arrived in Portland on Sept. 1 after being spotted in Portugal on Aug 25.

Also at Fore Points is the relatively small, 166-foot superyacht Sapphire, built in 2009. According to big-boat broker Denison Yachting, the Sapphire had an extensive retrofit in 2019 and can sleep up to 20 guests in seven staterooms. It’s for sale with an asking price of $15 million.

1 dead, 2 people missing after boat crash in Old Saybrook, Connecticut

One person has died after a boat crash in Old Saybrook on Monday night, two others are missing and five people are in the hospital. The search for the missing boaters was suspended overnight and resumed Tuesday morning .

A 31-foot motorboat carrying nine people struck a jetty at the mouth of the Connecticut River around 9:15 p.m. Monday while returning from Block Island, according to the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection EnCon Police.

Several 911 calls came in about the crash and rescue crews found the boat half submerged and significantly damaged.

One man was found dead in the vessel and six people were taken to the hospital, according to DEEP. The boat operator is in critical condition, Captain Keith Williams, of Connecticut Environmental Police, said Tuesday morning.

Williams said he believes one person has been released from the hospital. The extent of the injuries the others suffered has not been released.

The investigation is ongoing, but Williams said they believe all nine people are friends who went to Block Island for the day.

The capsized boat was recovered from the river on Tuesday and it was pulled from the water around 11:30 a.m.

Williams said Tuesday morning that the tide was coming in when the boat crashed.

Multiple agencies, including police and fire crews from several nearby towns, the State Police Dive Unit, and a helicopter from the U.S. Coast Guard station on Cape Cod were searching for the missing boaters.

Williams said crews remain in search and recovery mode.

Barcelona’s First Big LED Marquee Goes Up In Marina For America’s Cup, And Will Stay When The Boats Sail Away

The famed America’s Cup sailing competition has started in the waters off Barcelona, and one of the new features down at the city’s marina is a big 200 sq. meter LED display that will be tied to the competition this fall but stay in place for broader uses.

It is described as the city’s first large-format outdoor LED screen, mounted on the exterior of the IMAX building at Port Vell and widely visible in the general area – which is a magnet for tourists and locals because it is by the ocean and the area is riddled with places to stop for a drink or food.

It is a P6.7 SMD-based LED supplied by LG, sold in and installed by a Spanish partner, LED DREAM .

The company says in a brief on the project: This installation marks a visual milestone for Barcelona, enhancing the urban experience and changing the way we engage with visual communication. The screen will not only be active during the America’s Cup but will continue to be a city attraction, adding value even after the event ends. 

I definitely don’t know, but guessing some locals love the display, while others increasingly upset by what they consider too much tourism and its impact on housing and lifestyle probably aren’t thrilled to see the kind of display they associate with New York or Las Vegas down by the water and just outside the Gothic Quarter.
