More than 350 supporters and donors attend this sold-out event each year to enjoy dinner, dancing, and a cocktail hour ‘yacht hop’ at Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard,” Millerick concluded. Charter Yachts and Bermuda Racers Gather to Race and Mingle in Newport
By: American Sailing Boat Shows , Destinations
Writer, Editor and Sailor, Bob Curley, is a Rhode Island Expert who contributes to American Sailing on sailing New England and the Caribbean.
The beauty, glory and occasional danger of sailing were all on display the third week of June in Newport, R.I., as the city hosted both the Newport Charter Yacht Show and the Newport Bermuda Race .
A total of 18 charter yachts took part in the June 20-23 show, including monohull sailing yachts Wild Horses , Rebecca of Yineyardhaven , Aresthusa , and Augusta Maverick , and the sailing catamaran Gaia . Yachts ranged in length from 60 feet ( Aresthusa ) to the 164-foot power yacht TCB.
The show centered around the Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard, which provided dockage for participating yachts as well as playing home to about a dozen vendors (led by Helly Hanson, which created a popup shop for the event) and a hospitality tent doubling as an event center for awards night and other group activities.
Captains and crew were kept busy showing off the yachts throughout the course of the four-day event, with the biggest crowds on the days when the chef’s competition and a Goslings Rum sponsored cocktail competition took place.
“We had 300-plus people in attendance throughout the show and we hosted a variety of events to celebrate the charter yacht industry and to make it fun for the captains and crew who work tirelessly to make their yachts charter-ready,” said Veronica Brown, director of experiences for Safe Harbor Marina. “The quality of yachts on display was excellent, and the charter broker participation was on par with previous years.”
The city of Newport played a starring role, as well, with brokers invited to take private tours of the Rosecliff mansion and the new Sailing Museum, which opened in 2022. The traditional evening Yacht Hop was themed “The Gilded Age” in recognition of Newport’s prominence in the popular HBO series, which is filmed in part in the city.
“Newport is a good host for the show because it is one of New England’s main yachting hubs,” said Brown. “Charter yachts often depart and return to Newport at the charterer’s request because Newport has so many great amenities including a nearby small airport that accommodates private jets; plenty of berths for yachts of all sizes, including sailboats with deep drafts; it is centrally located between New York and Boston; and has plenty of accommodations and local attractions (restaurants, boutiques, museums, etc.) for people to visit while in town.”
Even late arrivers to the show were given a hospitable welcome by yacht crew, who set out hors d’oeuvres, poured cocktails, and offered tours — some led by the captains themselves. Captain Bill Wassmer, whose background includes sailing with Ted Turner, proudly showed off the four-cabin motor yacht Lexington , for example, and chef Renata Riley, a former restaurant owner in Kentucky, served her entry into the cocktail contest: a Goslings rum punch with mango, pineapple, papaya, orange, and San Pelligrino.
Aboard the elegant 151-foot “gentleman’s yacht” Nadan , Capt. Mike shared stories about an owner who keeps a pair of cannon mounted starboard and fires them in welcome whenever the boat returns to its home in Maine.
2022 Newport Bermuda Race
The Charter Yacht Show overlapped the 2022 Newport Bermuda Race, held June 17-22 and featuring 19 classes of racers and hundreds of boats. “We always host the Newport Charter Yacht Show right after the start of the Newport to Bermuda Race,” Brown said. “For Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard, the timing is right because many berths open up after the race start, making it possible to move the racing yachts out and the charter yachts in.”
Participants came from all over the world to race in the 52nd biennial sprint from Newport to Bermuda, dubbed the “thrash to the Onion Patch.” The race typically takes 2-6 days, and the “thrash” in the nickname is a nod to the often treacherous North Atlantic weather facing sailors during the race.
That danger was underscored in the 2022 race by the tragic crew-overboard death of Colin Golder, captain of the 42-foot sloop Morgan of Marietta , who died while the boat was battling strong winds about 325 miles out from Bermuda.
Morgan of Marietta was one of 16 boats forced to retire from the race, but hundreds of others finished, and some set new records. The MOD70 trimaran Argo set an elapsed-time record time of 33 hours, the fastest time recorded in the 116-year history of the Bermuda Race, covering the 635-nautical mile course at an average speed of 19.24 knots.
“The forecast under-appreciated just how rough the sea state was,” said winning skipper Jason Carroll. “The whole crew is wiped out. We’re tired.”
The Gibbs Hill Lighthouse Trophy, a silver replica of Bermuda’s tallest lighthouse, was claimed by Christopher Sheehan, whose Newport based Pac52 Warrior Won claimed victory in the higher-performance, professionally crewed Gibbs Hill Division. Sheehan is the first owner to win both the Gibbs Hill Lighthouse and St. David’s Lighthouse trophies.
The latter — a silver and gold replica of the lighthouse awarded since 1954 to the winner of the largest division (108 boats this year) — was presented this year to Sally and Stan Honey for winning with their 56-year-old Cal 40, Illusion, which posted the fastest corrected time in the division in the past 20 years. Illusion’s margin of victory was an eye-opening two hours over the J/122 Zig Zag .
In addition to viewing the race start from Fort Adams, which served as the race headquarters, spectators and sailors has the opportunity to explore Newport on land and sea: race-related activities included tours of a replica British Navy sloop of war at Bowen’s Wharf and the Newport-based tall ship Oliver Hazard Perry , and harbor tours on Amazing Grace and the Coastal Queen .

Yacht hop in newport harbor: the boys & girls club fundraiser.
Newport hosts some of the most scrumptious sailing vessels of the summer – sleek racing sailboats, large motor yachts the size of floating homes and America’s Cup J boats and 12 meters, to name a few.
A selection of these nautical examples of “bling” graciously partnered with the Boys & Girls Club of Newport County for a “Yacht Hop” which resulted in a wildly successful fundraiser for our 60 year old charity. Near and dear to Newporter’s hearts, the Club (2 locations and a 95 acre summer camp) is an institution that is as important to the quality of life we all share here as are the ocean waters, green landscapes, obliging weather and our long history.
Not being a “yachtie” myself, I revelled in the chance to tour this eye candy up close and personal (don’t forget to kick your shoes off first.)
One in particular, S/Y GLORIA (S/Y stands for super yacht,) inspired so many clicks on my cell phone camera that my battery ran out; for starters, she’s a 126′ long schooner, built in the 1980s in the classic style (think Errol Flynn.)The crew are a textbook case in carrying out a theme effectively; here, 007. Being a Bond girl myself, I was completely smitten. They even had commissioned a dee-lish (and pretty) cocktail,” Casino Royale” (note to self…put TheCocktailGuru.com on speed dial.)
I have to confess that at first I thought the men with shoulder holsters were actually the boat’s security team.
Casino Royale
Glenfiddich Single Malt Scotch Whisky Prosecco Raspberries Fresh Lemon Juice Simple Syrup Mint
And did I remember to mention that this beauty is owned by Pete Townsend of “The Who”? Just her sleeping and bathing accommodations prompted a double take. I’m betting you’ll share my reaction, so sit back and enjoy.
The grand salon, with paneled walls and ceilings, included a mock fireplace and flat screen television; that night it also had not one, but two treasures on display – an original Matisse and an autographed electric guitar by Adam Levine (of the band Maroon Five and TV show, The Voice) to be auctioned that evening.
Continuing the 007 theme, the yacht’s dining room was set up as a gambling area.
The master stateroom…can you believe you’re on a sailboat (albeit a 126′ schooner?)
Really! We’re on a sailboat? (don’t miss the marbled shower with 22-karat gold-plated fixtures.)
Back topside, I had to skoot over to my other favorite sailboat, S/YMETEOR, resting in the slip next to Gloria. Dan Meyer’s handsome vessel is a study in functional details that give new meaning to shipshape, but this is how it’s done by true sailors – the wood is beautifully varnished; the lines are tied up “just so,” the chrome couldn’t shine any brighter.
Too soon, they shooed us off to the fundraiser, where the auction bidding was lively, the band hot and the evening temp just cool enough. Lady Lola (her own “City by the Sea”) looked on as we headed for our last gangplank of the evening.
Do come visit next summer for this super fundraiser!

Dear Bettie i enjoyed a splendid weekend at my first coaching event. Every part of this particular weekend was majestic; from the magnificent horses and beautifully appointed carriages to those superbly groomed folks driving the horses over the stunning views of the ocean and ending up back at the Marble House . I have so many wonderful photos; viewed them again this AM. I would love to be part of the lecture @ Carnegie on October 6th. Is there ant extra tickets to be purchased for this event; or, is this event sold out?
Well as I told you earlier this summer I love your blogs. I met you a few years ago at the Cushings; I have never forgotten that memorable meeting Hapoy Monday Mary J Kakas
Hello again, Mary, always so nice to hear from you. The Carnegie event is a private event and no tickets are being sold. We’ll find another time for you to attend one of my lectures. Best, Bettie

Welcome to Newport Living and Lifestyles I’m Christon and joining us today is Joe Pratt
from the Boys and Girls Club and Jennifer Saia from B&B; yacht charters and
we’re going to talk a little bit today about an event coming up on August 9th
Christon, well this is our 6th annual Newport Yacht rendezvous. It’s our
signature event our largest fundraiser of the year
we’re expecting 400 guests to join us this year. Wow! and we’re real
fortunate as our signature event we raise money to support the Boys and
Girls Club in our programs and this year we’re going to hold a special raise the
paddle which is going to be aimed to support our Camp Grosvenor.
How much money do we expect to raise this year?
good question
obviously we rely on our generosity of our friends they’ve been very generous
in the past over the six years we’ve raised 1.2 million. The average is about two
hundred thousand a year so we’re hopeful, but the raise the paddle portion is
gonna be targeted at the camp. Camp Grosvenor is a hundred-acre outdoor camp located
in Saunderstown Rhode Island. We serve this year our largest year and since
I’ve been at Boys and Girls Club we have 200 campers per week joining us they can
experience everything from the waterfront paddle boards canoes kayaking
swimming a 45 foot high twisting helix Tower. Oh my gosh! I was gonna say, count
me in until he just said that!. If you’re scared of heights we also have a hi-low ropes course again 45
feet high where we harnessed the kids in they learn team building and trust. Wonderful
programs really a great outdoor experience where they make friends for
life and in the kids come from every community where the Boys and Girls Club
of Newport County. We’re serving Newport Middletown Portsmouth Jamestown and our
camp is in Saunderstown Rhode Island. We’re serving kids from Westerly,
South Kingstown and North Kingstown. Really grown and I think a direct
tribute to the staff, we have the best staff of any club in the country.
They’re really delivering it and that’s why the kids stay. They form relationships with the staff.
That’s so important. I can remember growing up and I’m still keeping some of my teachers
near and dear to my heart. It’s really one of the key elements for the programs we do.
Our mission is to enable all youth to achieve their full potential.
and we serve all youth, but we do our best to never turn anyone away because of
finances so we serve the ones that are most at risk and when you look around us
we’re living in this beautiful community. Yachts and beautiful scenery.
However Newport’s a real dichotomy, you know, we have great wealth but we have
great poverty. The poverty in the city of Newport is 15% across the city. If you
take a left when you come into Newport off the bridge. The poverty in the northern part
of the city is 45% It’s so great that you guys are doing such great
things for the community. If people want to get involved and help sponsor,
participate in events, where can they find you. They can find us
on the web www.BGCnewport.org or call 401.847.6927
Oh, that’s his mobile number! It might not be, I just joking….
I would encourage it. If folks haven’t been to the club in a long time, it’s changed significantly.
We have a wonderful board, Jennifer is one of our board members, really doing
great work in the community. We’ve invested a million and a half in our facilities, the camp,
our local facilities serving more kids than ever. We serve twenty
thousand meals a year, provide transportation to and from the club.
Really making sure the kids that need it most get it. In Newport we
talked about the dichotomy, 65% of the kids qualify for free
reduced lunch, 42% of the kids single-parent households, 32%
of the kids are chronically absent. That’s touching, touching numbers. There’s a real need there.
The best way to make a difference is to get involved. A really great way for you guys to raise
funds is the Yacht Hop Rendezvous. Yes! the Newport Yacht Rendezvous and I was
involved with the Boys and Girls Club of Broward County Florida. I moved up
here 6 years ago. I had no idea of the need. I really always thought that it was
just a wealthy wealthy community. The Yacht Hop in Broward County that’s
been going on over 25 years. It’s such a significant event there, and I’ve said
why don’t we do it here! There’s nobody that does this here . We go to these
unbelievable galas in all these beautiful mansions but they’re all pretty
much the same . This brings out like just a diverse group of people with
definitely the high net worth individuals. You go from yacht to
yacht to yacht. Each boat has a theme and a signature cocktail ( You would think I have had one already! )
The yacht crew really get into it. It’s really fun ! How many yachts do
you have this year ? This year we have 9 vessels and they’re from 41 feet to 112.
A diverse group of boats, a Westport, a Hatteras, we’ve got a dinner cruise boat,
we’ve got a really beautiful nostalgic vessel that’s 58 feet, it’s called Goddess
I think I am one! I like that!
My nickname is, Yacht Queen, any way. One of the things that is real special is. as the guests come in
you know they come down the entrance way, the kids from the club greet them, so the
kids are there welcoming them and escorting them to the to the vessels if
you will. We might be inspiring the next yacht
captain or at least a yacht engineer we need more yacht crew. There you go, so
I’ve been asked several times, what do you wear this year? Nautical chic.
It’s from preppy to very very traditional yacht attire, but please
slip on, slip off shoes. It’s very difficult to go from boat to boat to
boat if you have to untie your shoes. Actually don’t wear socks guys.
because if you go up and down the stairs you might slip. OK, good to note.
Any thing else that we should make note of? Christon, I would, one thing we want to add, is this year is
a special year for us, we’re honoring a former board member Rocky Kempenaar.
He was on the board for 20-plus years, a longtime volunteer supporter, benefactor
of the club, just a wonderful supporter in the community. Really special night
for him and for us. Join us, see the kids, learn more about
the club. We are sold out right? We’re fortunate to be in a great community.
Thanks guys, we look forward to seeing you on Newport Living and Lifestyles

By Katie Scott 2 July 2024
Closing down after a successful run at Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard, the Newport Charter Yacht Show showcased an enticing collection of USA yacht charters , with brokers and industry professionals having abundant opportunities to experience some of the most indulgent yacht rentals on the market.
Displaying an eclectic range of both motor and sailing yacht charters , the trade-only event is a platform to introduce industry professionals to the current fleet of North America charter yachts , allowing brokers to learn about the mix of luxurious onboard amenities and highlights of the surrounding region too.
Armed with a wealth of knowledge about the attending boat charters, brokers are then able to relay information to prospective clients and help them choose a luxury charter yacht for their next vacation.
Attending superyacht charters
Annually presenting an outstanding collection of superyacht charters, the 2024 edition of the Newport Charter Yacht Show didn't disappoint with an inclusive selection of charter yacht styles, including both monohulls and catamaran yacht charters , plus a good selection of smaller yachts and exhibitors dotted around the pontoons.
Presenting an enticing display of luxury charter yachts in the 70 – 200ft+ (21.3 - 60.96m) sector, highlights from the 2024 edition included 168ft (51.21m) yacht rental ACTA from the fleet of Feadship charter yachts ; with her impressive outdoor living offering with a deck Jacuzzi, exterior bar, spacious swim platform, and multiple alfresco lounge and dining options.
The award-winning 164ft (49.99m) yacht charter CHASSEUR also made an impact around the docks, showcasing beautiful interiors featuring sycamore, Santos rosewood, and silk rugs. Refitted in 2022, the Christensen yacht rental is an ideal choice for corporate or family yacht charters .
Also making an appearance at the show, 108ft (32.92m) private charter yacht FIFI showed off her captivating Italian craftsmanship, demonstrating the opulence of the Custom Line charter fleet ; alongside 87ft (26.52m) Ferretti yacht rental HOYA SAXA and 87ft (26.52m) luxury yacht charter IMPULSE from the Broward yacht rental fleet .
2024 crew competitions
Pairing up an eye-catching display of Northeast America charter yachts with fierce but friendly crew competitions, this year's Newport Charter Yacht Show witnessed some incredible entries for both the chef's competition and tablescaping.
With 10 attending crewed yacht charters taking part in the tablescaping competition, visitors to the show were treated to unique visions around the docks with entries being judged by a professional independent judging panel led by Cheryl DiGennaro of Newport Yacht and Home Interiors.
In addition to an award being presented on behalf of the professional panel, a second award was handed out at the show; known as the fan favorite award. Walking away with coveted awards and bragging rights, this year's winners were yacht charter VIVACE and CHASSEUR.
The 2024 chef competition featured some outstanding dishes and was won by Chef Kendra from luxury yacht charter FREEDOM , followed by Chef Monja on VIVACE and Chef Fernando on HOYA SAXA.
Other awards presented at the show included the Herman Pundt Best Yacht Hop award, which was presented to the crew of M/Y FREEDOM for their red, white, and blue theme, the signature cocktail winner for classic yacht NADAN, and the first-ever mocktail award for charter yacht FIFI.

Newport Charter Yacht Show To Be Held June 23-26, 2024 at Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard
The Newport Charter Yacht Show, held annually in picturesque downtown Newport, R.I., will be held June 23-26, 2024 at Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard. For charter yachts who plan to spend the summer in New England, the Newport Charter Show is the perfect way to kick-off their season in the northeast. Over 100 charter brokers attend the show, which will feature sailing and motor vessels ranging in size from 50 to 200+ feet. The show is open exclusively to charter yacht brokers, agents, and industry professionals. Registration is now open online: www.newportchartershow.com
“2024 looks to be another exciting and busy season for yachts heading to Newport,” said Michael Millerick, general manager of Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard, a premier superyacht marina and shipyard in the northeast. “This summer’s yachting and special event schedule is packed with many great events including the TP52 Super Series regatta; Newport to Bermuda Race; USGA Senior Open Championship at Newport Country Club; Newport Flower Show at Rosecliff Mansion; Safe Harbor Race Weekend; and many more high-profile events that are sure to attract yacht owners and charter guests from around the world,” Millerick said.
“We look forward to welcoming back yacht captains, crew members, charter brokers, marine industry vendors and sponsors and we encourage yacht captains and charter brokers to register early for the show to take advantage of the 25% savings on registration and dockage which is in place until February 15, 2024.”
“We are also thrilled to announce that one of Newport’s most popular charity events, the Newport Yacht Rendezvous, benefitting the Boys & Girls Club of Newport County, will be held a day prior to the Newport Charter Show, on Saturday, June 22. More than 350 supporters and donors attend this sold-out event each year to enjoy dinner, dancing, and a cocktail hour ‘yacht hop’ at Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard,” Millerick concluded. Yachts who participate in the Newport Yacht Rendezvous receive a complimentary night of dockage and shore power as a thank you for their support of this very worthy cause.
