What is the river in poker?

River in poker

You’ve seen the term “the river” thrown around in poker news articles, during poker commentary, in poker rooms, on podcasts, and even during play in your local home game. It’s a common poker term that’s important to know if you want to understand the game. But what is the river, and what does it mean for your own play?

Let’s take a look at this term and get you up to speed.

The river is the last of the community cards dealt in a game, both in poker tournaments and cash games. It’s also known as fifth street, as it’s the fifth and final of the five community cards. Most importantly, the river often makes or breaks a hand and decides the outcome of a showdown.

The river is the final deciding factor in a complete poker hand.

Poker players receive two hole cards from the dealer in Texas hold’em , or four hole cards in Omaha . The dealer then burns a card and presents the three-card flop on the table. After a round of betting options, the dealer burns and presents the turn card (fourth of five cards on the board, or fourth street). And finally, fifth street is the river, after which another betting round can ensue until there’s a winner (or a chop).

In card games like Stud, the river isn’t a community card but rather the final card dealt to each player.

What is the origin of the “river”?

No one really knows the origin of the term “river.” Some speculate that it had something to do with the riverboats in America, where players competed in various poker games. Others say the river is the final chance for a player to win or lose — sink or swim.

How do you play the river in poker?

The strategy for playing the river in poker depends greatly on what the players have done so far during the hand. Your river strategy will depend on the betting patterns of your opponents, tells, and the real money in the pot.

It’s important to remember that the river is the last opportunity to win the hand. It’s the point where you can represent the strength of your hand — or the bluffed strength — and bet in a way that forces other players to fold. At the same time, it can be a reason for caution if your opponent has shown that they’ll call any bet.

The best calculation to use for the river is pot odds . If there’s $100 in the pot, and you could bet $50 to possibly win the pot, that gives you 2-1 odds to win. Any odds greater than 50% are good odds.

Position on the river

A player’s position is always important in poker. While your position at the start of a card hand can determine opening hands and initial bet sizes, it can also dictate moves on later streets.

The best position on the river is usually a later position. A later position puts the onus on other players and gives you more response options. It also lets you calculate pot odds for a call. In essence, a poker player in late position post-flop — and all the way to the river — can gather more information to inform their final decisions.

Playing in position

When playing the river in position, you have the control. You can bet or raise with the nuts and control the size of the pot. Even if you think the opponent has the better hand, you can easily fold to a bet. You also have the option to simply check and hope that the opponent checks as well.

Being in position when moving toward a showdown on the river gives you most of the control, time to think, and the ability to both act and react with some poker strategy in mind.

Playing out of position

Being out of position isn’t the worst thing in the world, because you still have options.

You can lead the action with a check to find out where your opponent landed on the river. And when calculating any pot odds, you can always fold if you aren’t sure of your hand strength.

Unless you believe you have the nuts or something close to it, the best way to play out of position on the river is to be cautious and watch the opponent carefully.

Can you bet after the river card is dealt?

Poker allows betting on every street. Players can bet before the flop, after the flop, after the turn, and then again after the river.

A player can check, bet, call , raise, or reraise after seeing the river. This is the time that betting choices are the most important, as there’s most likely a fair amount of money in the pot that’s up for grabs. After the river turns up, the stakes in the hand are often highest (whether in a home game or high-stakes poker, when decisions can make or break a pivotal hand).

Betting on the river: yay or nay?

Before betting on the river, consider everything that happened before it. What were your opponent’s actions preflop, and after the flop and turn? What did the bet sizing say about their possible holding? Did you pick up any tells? Do you remember how that person played any previous starting hands?

There are three important factors in deciding whether or not to bet on the river.

  • Do you think you have the best or worst hand, a strong hand, or a weak hand?
  • How will your opponent react to a bet?
  • How much money is in the pot? In other words, what are the pot odds?

The best poker books contain entire chapters on river play because river strategy can be complicated. But at its simplest, base your decision on the strength or weakness of your hand, your perception of your opponent’s hand and possible actions, and what’s at stake.

Bet on the river if you want to force your opponent into a tough decision likely to make them fold their hand. If in position to do so, this is an effective way to take the pot without even showing your hand face-up.

Also, bet on the river if you have the nuts or are fairly certain you have the best hand. You can make a value bet on the river or reraise your opponent to make them pay the price to see your better hand. This is the best opportunity to win money with all the possible information available from the hand.

Faro in Tonopah, Nevada in 1905

Depiction of Faro in Tonopah, Nevada, in 1905

Whether on a riverboat atop the Mighty Mississippi River or in the smoky dimness of a mining camp saloon , a lucky draw could turn a broken man into a winner. In the days of the frontier  west , poker was king with the mustachioed likes of Wild Bill Hickok , Doc Holliday , “ Canada” Bill Jones , Wyatt Earp , Bat Masterson , and hundreds of others.

In the old west towns of Deadwood , Dodge City , Tombstone , and Virginia City , gamblers played with their back to the wall and their guns at their sides, as dealers dealt games with names such as Chuck-A-Luck, Three Card Monte, High Dice, and Faro , by far the favorite in the wild west saloons.

The exact origin of poker is unknown, but many have speculated that it originated from the 16th-century Persian card game called As Nas. Played with a 25-card deck containing five suits, the rules were similar to today’s Five Card Stud. Others are of the opinion that it was invented by the Chinese in 900 A.D. In all likelihood, the game derived from elements of various gambling diversions that have been around from the beginning of time.

Poker in the United States was first widely played in New Orleans by French settlers playing a card game that involved bluffing and betting called Poque in the early 1800s. This old poker game was similar to the “draw poker” game today. New Orleans evolved as America’s first gambling city as riverboat men, plantation owners, and farmers avidly pursued the betting sport.

John Davis opened the first American gambling casino in New Orleans around 1822. The club, open 24 hours a day, provided gourmet food, liquor, roulette wheels, Faro tables, poker, and other games. Davis also made certain that painted ladies were never far away. Dozens of imitators soon followed, making the gaming dens the primary attraction of New Orleans. The city’s status as an international port and its thriving gambling industry created a new profession called the card “sharper.”

Professional gamblers and cheats gathered in a waterfront area known as “the swamp,” an area even the police were afraid to frequent, and any gambler lucky enough to win stood a good chance of losing his earnings to thieves outside of the gambling rooms and saloons.

Gambling was outlawed in the rest of the huge Louisiana territory in 1811, but New Orleans continued to enjoy the prosperity brought by gambling for more than 100 years. Though the law was passed for the entire Louisiana Purchase, it was obviously not enforced, and casinos and gambling began to spread.

As commerce developed on the waterways, gambling traveled up the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers, then westward via covered wagons, and later on the railroad. The first written reference in the United States came from Jonathan H. Greer in 1834 when he referred to the amusement as the “cheating game.”

Some of the first gambling dens outside of New Orleans were started in river towns that were popular with both travelers and professional gamblers. It was here that many “sharpers” preyed on these transient people, with their pockets filled with their life savings, on the way to the new frontier. The dishonest gamblers also often ran confidence games and other con artist businesses in order to gaff the unwary pioneers. A host of companies specialized in manufacturing and selling card cheating devices. One riverboat gambler named George Devol was so proud of his ability to slip a stacked deck into a game that he once used four of them in one poker hand, dealing four aces to each of his four opponents.

It was professional gamblers who were largely responsible for the poker boom. Considering themselves as entrepreneurs, they took advantage of America’s growing obsession with gambling. Though they had a high opinion of themselves, the public viewed them with disdain, considering them as contributing nothing to society. This viewpoint was often warranted in many cases, as a large number of professional gamblers often cheated in order to win. To be successful, professional gamblers had to have irresistible personalities in order to attract men to play with them. Often dressing in dandy clothes, their success depended partly on chance and partly on skill, sometimes on sleight of hand, and in the Old West , their shooting abilities. By the 1830s, citizens began to blame professional gamblers for any and every crime in the area, and gambling itself began to be attacked.

James Bowie

James Bowie

It was during these riverboat gambling heydays that an interesting story occurred in 1832. On a Mississippi steamboat, four men were playing poker, three of which were professional gamblers, and the fourth, a hapless traveler from Natchez. Soon, the young, naïve man had lost all his money to the rigged game. Devastated, the Natchez man planned to throw himself into the river; however, an observer prevented his suicide attempt and then joined the card game with the “sharps.” In the middle of a high-stakes hand, the stranger caught one of the professionals cheating and pulled a knife on the gambler, yelling, “Show your hand! If it contains more than five cards, I shall kill you!” Six cards fell to the table when he twisted the cheater’s wrist. Immediately, the stranger took the $70,000 pot, returning $50,000 to the Natchez man and keeping $20,000 for his trouble. Shocked, the Natchez man stuttered, “Who the devil are you, anyway?” to which the stranger responded, “I am James Bowie .”

Anxious citizens of these river port towns grew increasingly wary of the confidence men that were multiplying so quickly. In Vicksburg, Mississippi , the citizens’ rage had become so increased by 1835 that a vigilante group lynched five cardsharps. Soon after this, many of the gamblers moved onto the riverboats, benefiting from the transient riverboat lifestyle.

After the Civil War , America pushed its boundaries West , where the frontier was born of speculators, travelers, and miners. These hardy pioneers had high risk-taking characteristics, making any gambling situation a popular pastime for these rough-and-tumble men of the frontier. In virtually every mining camp and prairie town, a poker table could soon be found in each saloon, surrounded by prospectors, lawmen , cowboys , railroad workers, soldiers , and outlaws for a chance to tempt fortune and fate.

During the California Gold Rush of 1849, gambling houses sprouted up all over northern California , offering a wide array of gaming tables, musicians, and pretty women to entertain the gamblers as they played. At this time, dance halls began to appear and spread throughout later settlements. While these saloons usually offered games of chance, their chief attraction was dancing. The customer generally paid 75¢ to $1.00 for a ticket to dance, with the proceeds being split between the dance hall girl and the saloon owner. After the dance, the girl would steer the gentleman to the bar, where she would make an additional commission from selling a drink.

A popular girl would average 50 dances a night, sometimes making more a night than a working man could make in a month. Dance hall girls made enough money that it was very rare for them to double as a prostitute. In fact, many former “ soiled doves ” found they could make more money as a dance hall girl.

As the Gold Rush gained momentum, San Francisco replaced New Orleans as the United States’ gambling center. Over 100 thriving saloons and brothels met the sailors and fortune-seeking travelers as they disembarked at the San Francisco harbor and stumbled into the infamous Barbary Coast Waterfront District.

Playing Poker

Playing Poker

Faro was by far the most popular and prolific game played in Old West saloons, followed by Brag, Three-card-monte, and dice games such as High-low, Chuck-a-luck, and Grand hazard. During this time, gambling also began inviting more diversity, including Hispanics, blacks, Chinese, and women in the games. Three of this time’s more famous women gamblers were Calamity Jane , Poker Alice , and Madame Mustache .

Before long, many of the Old West mining camps, such as Deadwood , Leadville , and Tombstone , became as well known for gunfights over card games than they did for their wealth of gold and silver ore. Professional gamblers such as Doc Holliday and Wild Bill Hickok learned early to hone their six-shooter skills at the same pace as their gambling abilities. Taking swift action upon the green cloth became part of the gamblers’ code – shoot first and ask questions later.

One such occasion that clearly showed the quick and violent code was when Doc Holliday was dealing Faro to a local bully named Ed Bailey in Fort Griffin , Texas . Bailey was unimpressed with Doc’s reputation, and in an attempt to irritate him, he kept picking up the discards and looking at them. Peeking at the discards was strictly prohibited by the rules of Western Poker, a violation that could force the player to forfeit the pot.

Though Holliday warned Bailey twice, the bully ignored him and picked up the discards again. This time, Doc raked in the pot without showing his hand or saying a word. Bailey immediately brought out his pistol from under the table, but Doc’s lethal knife slashed the man across the stomach before the man could pull the trigger. With blood spilled everywhere, Bailey lay sprawled out dead across the table.

Inevitably, there were liquored-up miners and cowboys who would shoot up the saloons and sometimes the poker winner when they were angered by their losses. Even Wild Bill Hickok, mostly known for his heroics and prowess with a six-shooter, took advantage of those abilities when faced with a loss in Deadwood, South Dakota . Shortly before midnight, after a night of drinking and gambling, Hickok was playing a two-handed game with a man named McDonald when the stakes began to increase with every card dealt.

When the hand was complete and the middle of the table piled high with money, McDonald showed his hand, displaying three jacks. To this, Hickok responded, “I have a full house – aces over sixes,” then threw his hand face down upon the table. However, when McDonald picked up Hickok’s hand, he exclaimed, “I see only two aces and one six.” Wasting no time, Wild Bill drew his six-shooter with his right hand and replied, “Here’s my other six.” Then he flashed a bowie knife with his left hand, stating, “And here’s my one spot.” McDonald immediately backed down, saying coolly, “That hand is good. Take the pot.”

By the end of the 19th century, gambling had spread like wildfire through the many mining camps, multiplying as the gold and silver hunters spread across the West, searching for new strikes. At this time, states and cities started to take advantage of these growing ventures by taxing gambling dens and raising money for their communities.

During the late 1800s, many towns and states across the western frontier began to enact new laws against gambling. Attempting to gain new levels of respectability, the laws primarily targeted the “professional gambler” more than gaming in general. Some types of gambling were made illegal, while limits were established on others. Initially, anti-gaming laws were weak and had little real effect on gambling, as they were difficult to enforce, establishments simply introduced new variants, and penalties were light.

However, the laws were gradually strengthened,; ironically, Nevada was one of the first states in the West to make gambling illegal in 1909. Other states soon followed suit, and true to the worst fears of the Puritans, gangsters combined liquor and gambling in the cities of New York, Cleveland, and Chicago during the 1920s.

By the time the Hoover Dam was constructed in 1931, Nevada relaxed its gambling laws, and casinos once more began to flourish. By 1939, there were six casinos and 16 saloons in Las Vegas . As automobile traffic increased and people began to travel more for leisure, Las Vegas began to boom into the gambling Mecca it is today.

Over the years, poker has evolved through legitimate casinos and backroom games to its many present variations. Over the last decades, several states have reintroduced gambling in limited formats, and the fastest-growing gambling opportunity today doesn’t even require you to leave your home as you log onto your computer to tempt the fates. Carefully regulated by gaming laws, poker is now the most popular card game in the world.

Version 63.1.0

This is another “great release”! I think it’s “great” because the changes that were made addressed issues that impact the user experience and the changes that I made were elegant and cleaned up some pretty bad code. I always feel better when I find opportunities to streamline the code and correct spaghetti code that was created when I was first learning to program this app. While I was testing the new screens for the iPad 11 (M2) in “zoomed” mode, I noticed an issue related to a lack of Loyalty Bonus notifications. Basically, what I discovered was that, although the bonuses were being paid, many times there was no alert notification to tell the Player the award had posted and, in some cases, the timing was a bit slower than one would expect. As I normally do in situations like that, I posted a message to let everyone know what I’d observed and to communicate that I was working on a fix. I want to thank Nick for reaching out to me using “Send Feedback”. Nick not only confirmed the issue and how frustrating it was, but he provided some extremely valuable and detailed insights and observations from his own experiences. Based on what Nick shared with me, I was able to immediately identify the root cause of the problem and craft a solution. Were it not for Nick’s input, it would have taken much longer than the three days I worked to isolate the problem and fix it. In essence, the alerts were being sent, but they were being “swallowed” (hidden) by other messages that might be on the screen (e.g. a Holiday Purchase Special or one of the many Player Messages I include to share tips). Those types of “messages” were incompatible with how I was providing the alert. Given how long the Loyalty Bonuses have been around, that was some of the first code I wrote for the app. It was also some of the worst code from a proper patterns and best practices perspective. What I give you now is sleek, streamlined, and should prove to be very solid. Once again, Nick gets a lot of the thanks for helping me to isolate the issue. In an app that consists of 100s of 1000s of lines of codes, that is never easy. Another important bug fix in this release affected all six of the Blackjack games because they share a lot of the same code. Basically, the Deal button, that also serves as the Hit button, was not always changing its text like it should. The game logic still worked as expected, but the failure to update properly was creating a bad user experience. Mike, who reached out a couple weeks back to report a massive problem in the Blackjack games, again took the time to let me know about this issue. He wasn’t complaining, he was just focusing on “attention to detail” and letting me know. Well, now that problem no longer exists! Thank you, Mike! I likely never would have caught it because I rarely play Blackjack. Mark, a long time supporter and Craps Player requested that the number of rolls be tracked for each “run” in Craps. Now, that count will be included with the net impact of the run. Additionally, Mark correctly pointed out that the Loyalty Bonuses were being included in the net impact of a run if one was awarded while the dice were being rolled. For now, the simple solution is to defer awarding any Loyalty Bonus while Craps is active. I’ll be working on a more elegant way to track the impact of a Shooter’s run. Lastly, one of the most frequent text messages I receive on “Send Feedback” is from Players telling me that “Omaha Hold’em is broken” because, after the cards get dealt, all they can do is fold. As soon as I ask “have you selected two of your four cards to play?”, the issue gets resolved. I assumed the message that was being shown must have been too inconspicuous and folks were missing it. So, for this release, I went it to extend the duration of the message. When I did, I discovered that the message wasn’t being displayed anymore. Well, it is now. Many thanks, to "another Mike" for reaching out! Stay safe! ~Danny

Perfect buy.

This app is amazing but I have one major gripe, and I only say this cause I personally work at a casino, but the Spanish 21 I’m familiar with is not depicted on your version. From my knowledge the play should be able to “Double Down” three time, each time doubling the wager placed for instance original bet being 5$ could be doubled down with another 5$ (first double) now if the player wanted again they could double down again called a “double double” which they would then have to match the current wager now being 10$ (second double) and finally if they do wish for the final time they’d be able to perform a “double double double” in which on this hand they’d wager an additional 20$ as they have a current wager of 20$. The other complaint I have is that when splitting. Both card do not immediately receive a card only one card at a time for instance A,A being split would give the play the option to hit again on the first ace after the first initial card, only when they stand or bust would the next ace receive a card. Besides this one thing I noticed the game is amazing. They’re are also bonuses that maybe you did not include due to the complexity of the bonuses and difficulty displaying them to the play, I am unsure. I appreciate your time and any response you provide. Great work keep the amazing communication and attention to your fan base.

Developer Response ,

Hey There! Thanks so much for the 5 Star review and the detailed comments. There is definitely an issue with Double Down in Spanish 21 and it's on my list to address. It should happen in the next few releases. I'll have to dig deeper into your comments about Split Aces. If possible, reach out to me using "Send Feedback" so that we can discuss via text. As to bonuses: different casinos have different bonuses and I've based many of the games on the casinos down here in South Florida; my assumption has always been that the payout odds are influenced by the wagers that are made available. My gut tells me it's part of how they ensure their "House Edge". I could be wrong, though. It would be great to have a Player Preference option to "pick your favorite casino" and have rules and pay tables adjust accordingly, but that will take a lot of work, research, and probably some amount of travel! Thanks again for posting. I appreciate you! Updated: I just released an update to Spanish 21 that is more inline with what many Players expect. It turned out that my local casino was playing by their own set of rules. Thanks again for reaching out and please let me know if the update is more of what you expected. ~Danny

Completely satisfied

Admittedly, I’m a dinosaur. I’m never going to be a gamer, on my phone or computer. But I do want to play plain ol’ video poker on my kinda old iPhone, to kill time. I don’t want to buy an app (period), especially without knowing that it’s good. I don’t want to have to pay real dinero to get fake money to keep playing a game that only pays back an occasional endorphin hit. I don’t want to get blasted with ads every minute, and I HATE those ads that ignore my mute settings and wake up my spouse. Lastly, I surely would rather somehow support a fellow human rather than any MegaCorp. This completely free River Boat Gambler(RBG) ticks all my boxes. Danny, the talented developer, is super responsive, obviously committed to providing the best app and service that he can, and refreshingly honest about the need to show an occasional ad to generate some modest revenue for his efforts, while working hard to make them as benign as possible. Via regular (every few hours) “loyalty bonuses”, RBG keeps you supplied with free chips when your luck inevitably runs out. RBG offers every casino card game you’ve ever heard of (and fun variants thereof. The app is aid out effectively and everything functions perfectly (if anything doesn’t work as it should, send feedback and Danny will fix it ASAP). I couldn’t be happier. Get it - you’ll be happy too!
Wow! I'm feeling a bit like a donkey right now! I apologize for not having responded to this review that you posted over three months ago! 😮 I honestly only noticed it tonight because I filtered my dashboard to see reviews I'd missed - I wasn't expecting to see any! 🤷‍♂️ Thank you for posting it, for the kind words, and for the 5 Stars! I feel really bad given that you emphasized my responsiveness; something I try to be very good about and I quite obviously failed on miserably here. I'm so glad you found RBG and I'm happy that you like it! I've developed the app to my standards; meaning I personally don't like a lot of ads, a lot of noise, and I have no patience for special effects that add no value. Personally, I just want to play the games and practice my strategies. Please don't hesitate to let me know if there is something I can do that will improve it for you. Again, I'm very sorry it took so long to reply; there's no excuse for that! I hope you're doing well! ~Danny

Just scroll, people!

Tl;dr at the bottom. I recently reached out to the game designer (Danny, who is ridiculously responsive) because I wasn’t able to access all the games. I was convinced of this because of a pop-up telling me my display was zoomed and so some games may not be accessible. I was further convinced of this because I had a strong recollection of trying (and failing) to scroll past the few games I could see on my screen. But it was a lie. It’s all a lie! [insert unnecessary maniacal laughter here] The pop-up is a minor algorithm oopsie and easily ignored. The real issue is I’m occasionally vexed by simple things. There’s a very good chance I didn’t scroll at all or tried to in the wrong direction. 🤦‍♀️ The good news is that being “limited” to just the few games I could immediately see, I discovered a fondness for Boston Five Poker - a game I didn’t know existed. And now I’m off to play the 50 or so games I didn’t know I could actually get to. tl;dr Really solid app, fun games, really responsive gamer designer, I’m an idiot.
😘🥳🤣 I loved our text chat; you totally made my day! And thank you very much for posting a review! I respond to every review and every support text and you may be right; I may be ridiculously responsive 🙃 Your chat came at a particularly low point during my day and I am even more grateful for that than am I for the 5 Stars. You're a gem! Thank you! ~Danny

RIVER IN POKER

River in Poker

Welcome to the last and final round of betting, the River round! In the process of poker learning, we are moving ahead step by step and understanding the actual table picture and gameplay scenarios. After successfully crossing the hurdles of confusion about basic poker game rules and different poker betting rounds, we have finally reached very close to our destination. A few players remain on the journey and reach the ‘River round. To reach this round and make it to win, you need to learn how to play poker online and we are sure that this best poker guide will prove to be an asset for you in this.

WHAT IS RIVER IN POKER?

What is river in poker?

River in poker is the ultimate round of betting in which the last community card is dealt to the players. This last card is also known as the ‘river card’ or the ‘fifth street’. After this, no more betting round is conducted and hence it is also known as the concluding round. If by the end of this round only one player is left on the table and others have folded, then that player would be declared as the winner of the pot. However, the game doesn’t end with this round, if more than one player is left on the table by the end of the round. If this is the case, then the final showdown round will determine the winner by comparing the hand rankings. The best poker card hand ranking holder will win the pot.

Generally, the river card makes less difference to the hand as the players have already made their best hand before this round. In a few cases, it helps the player to improve their hand and their strategy may change due to that.

So, players, this is the final chance to bet and make the best hand to take away the pot money with you. Getting here is not that difficult if you follow our poker guide and stay committed to the poker game rules and poker strategies.

RIVER IN POKER- RULES AND STRATEGIES

River in Poker - Rules and Strategies

It’s wonderful if you reach this round with your smart moves and tricks. But now, you have to analyze the situation more in a better way to grab the pot. To make a way to winning poker, you must consider the following points and act wisely.

1. The Pot Size Is Bigger Now

Obviously, after so many betting rounds, the size of the pot has increased manifold. So, before taking any action you must think about it. If your hand is strong enough, then you may take a possible risk and if you think your hand cannot beat the opponent’s hand, you may opt to fold. Take the decision considering all factors like

  • Your position on the table.
  • Your hand rankings.
  • Your opponent’s game strategy.
  • The information you have about your opponent.
  • Your stack size.

2. Either 100% Or 0% Equity

Since this is the final action round which can lead you either to win 100% of the pot money or lose all your money. So, choose wisely depending upon your hand holdings.

3. Use The Information Collected By You About Your Opponents

Whatever you know about your opponents, just use that information in this round as no more chance of action will be given after this round.

4. Choose To Raise, If You Can Face A Re-Raise

We suggest you raise the bet if you are very sure about your hand, otherwise choose to fold if your opponent is stronger than you.

5. Bluffing Can Be Risky

If you have bluffed from the very first round of betting and you were successful, then don’t change your track at this point as your aggression in bluffing may prove to be fruitful for you and your opponent may fold under pressure. But, on the contrary, if your opponent has a very good hand and is sure about it, then bluffing may prove risky for you in the showdown round. Your confidence can take you to the heights in this game, provided you use it with some smart tips and poker strategies learned here on Acehigh poker guide. We offer you the best poker gaming experience and training that is the key to gigantic poker winnings.

Volga River Cruises in Russia

Volga river cruising in Russia places you in another time. The longest and largest river in Europe stretches from Ivan the Terrible to Catherine the Great. Today, live along the central artery of Russia looks like it always has - the villages, the churches, the people, just like an old painting you have seen in a gallery.

The Volga flows through central Russia into the Caspian Sea and is often called the national river of Russia. 11 of the 20 largest cities of the country, including the capital Moscow, are in Volga's watershed. Some of the world's largest reservoirs can be found along the river, which has a symbolic meaning in Russian culture, referred to as Mother Volga (Volga Matushka) in Russian folklore and literature.

Explore the land of the Tsars while sailing down the historic Volga river, typically between Moscow and St Petersburg , the traditional homeports (of embarkation and debarkation). Tour landmarks are the Red Square and Kremlin in Moscow, the Hermitage and Catherine Palace in St Petersburg.

Russian River Cruises - CruiseMapper

Once unthinkable as a cruise vacation destination, Russia is today more accessible than ever, with stops along its largest European lakes and rivers. For river travel lovers accustomed to European itineraries, the Russian experience will be quite different. Russia has a special feel of uniquely designed riverboats. Built to handle larger lakes (Lake Ladoga for example, is the largest European freshwater body of water), these vessels usually feature larger size and capacity (up to six decks), deeper draft, and most of them are refurbished instead of being newbuild.

The itineraries offered are activity-intensive in Moscow and St Petersburg, with long periods of cruising and less ashore time in the middle. Smaller "Golden Ring" cities (so named due to their historic significance) are full of icon-riddled monasteries and Orthodox churches. Most cruise lines hire local experts and fill the days of sailing along the river with lectures on country's history, cooking demonstrations and language lessons.

Most of the tours offered by the companies sailing along Volga River are identical, so customers choosing between the different itineraries should look at how the river ships spend the time within Moscow and St. Petersburg. Some lines have their guests stay onboard, which can be as far as 1 hour out of both cities. Others put their clients up at hotels near the center of the city, with several meals at customer's expense.

Compared with other river routes, Russia features a short season, between early May and late October, with high season in June (known as White Nights because of the endless daylight), July and August. Even if the weather is chilly, there are some advantages to sailing early or late: you'll beat the crowds which can make a visit to the Hermitage a bear. Most Russian museums lack air-conditioning, and while the climate is generally temperate, in the summer Moscow often experiences high humidity heat waves.

Remember to think about your Russian visa at least 2 months before your voyage, to have enough time to fill out the paperwork, including a lengthy online application. And don't forget that the Russian language uses the Cyrillic alphabet. Even in the cities, you'll rarely find signs in English, so learning some letters and a few phrases will help you get around.

Doninturflot-Orthodox Cruise Company

Orthodox Cruise Company operates a fleet of USSR-design large river ships and serves mainly foreign tourists. The parent company Doninturflot (established in 1992) is the shipowner and manages the fleet.

  • Doninturflot started operations with the ships MS Maxim Litvinov, MS Mikhail Sholokhov and MS Sergei Dyagilev.
  • Since 2002, Docturflot charters Akademik Glushkov (currently MS Igor Stravinsky) owned by OOO Rosflotinvest.
  • In 2004 was acquired MS Anton Chekhov from Yenisei River Shipping Company (Russia).
  • In 2006 were acquired MS Peter Tchaikovsky and MS Ivan Bunin from the Moscow-based cruise shipping company "Passenger Port".
  • In 2008 was bought MS General Lavrinenkov from "Ukrrechflot" (Ukraine).
  • In 2011 was bought MS Marshal Koshevoy (from Ukrrichflot, Ukraine) but in April 2013 the ship was sold to Viking Cruises (now operates as Viking Akun ).
  • In 2016, was purchased MS Tikhi Don from the UK-based Grand Circle Travel company. In 2017, the ship started operations for Orthodox Cruise Company serving international tourists.

Imperial River Cruises Russia

"Imperial River Cruises Russia" was founded in 1992 and operates on inland waterways in both Russia and Ukraine. Company's chartered ships navigate on the rivers Volga, Don, Neva, Svir, Dnieper (also on the Danube) and the Russian lakes Onega and Ladoga.

The most operated itineraries are between Moscow and St Petersburg (visiting Uglich, Kostrom, Yaroslavl, Goritzy). Specially designed itineraries visit Vladimir, Suzdal, Zagorsk, Solovki Island. Also offered are itineraries Moscow-Volgograd and Moscow-Rostov, roundtrips from Kiev, and even grand voyages connecting two seas - Baltic and Black. Also offered are themed cruises - especially on food and music, with live performances by grand orchestras and choirs.

Imperial River Cruises Russia has an exclusive partnership with "Orthodox Cruise Company" - one of Russia's largest tour operators. As their names suggest, both companies target mainly foreign tourists - booking in the USA, Canada, UK, Australia. Ships' capacity varies between 180-250 passengers. English (or German) speaking licensed tour guides are provided on all excursions. The daily onboard entertainment program offers live musical performances, folk shows, enrichment lectures.

Russian cruise ships

Currently, in Russia is operated a huge fleet of over 200 river cruise ships. All these vessels were built during the USSR (Soviet Union) times, roughly in the period between 1950-1990. Depending on class and series, these boats differ in terms of size, equipment (different engine designs), passenger capacity, onboard facilities and venues, cabins (types and number). Amenities additionally differ by shipowner (cruise company).

Russian river cruise ship

All these old-design Russian ships were completely refurbished and rebuilt for their new shipowners, Some of these ships are operated (via partnerships or under charter) also by foreign companies (like Viking, CroisiEurope, Uniworld, AMAwaterways, Grand Circle, Nicko). During their multi-million-dollar drydock refits, vessels passenger capacities were considerably reduced to improve travel comfort and safety.

Most boats are of the following classes:

  • "Rossiya" (Project 785, 36 vessels built 1952-1958)
  • "Baykal" (Project 646, 15 units built 1953-1956)
  • "Rodina" (Project 588, 49 vessels built 1954-1961)
  • "Oktyabrskaya Revolyutsiya" (Project 26-37, 14 units built 1957-1962)
  • "Dunay" (Project 305, 47 vessels built between 1959-1964)
  • "Kuybyshev" (Project OL400, 9 units built 1975-1983)
  • "Vladimir Ilyich" (Project 301, 22 vessels built between 1975-1983)
  • "Dmitri Furmanov" (Project 302, 27 vessels built between 1983-1991)

Regardless of their age, all these motor ships undergo regular drydock refurbishments , machinery and safety checks, scheduled repairs (including annual surveys). Drydocks are every 5 years and include repairs, hull inspection, propulsion-steering inspection, general maintenance works.

Each ship is equipped with life-saving appliances (lifeboats and rafts) in amounts exceeding the boat's max passenger and crew capacity. Saint Petersburg includes the territories of more than 130 islands interconnected by over 300 bridges. The city has a huge number of cultural and historical sights, architectural landmarks, museums, magnificent palaces (Russian Tsars' former residences), grand parks, wide avenues, bridges, numerous monuments. Inside the fort are the Armoury (containing the Faberge eggs) and 9 onion-domed churches. Art-fans can seek out Pushkin Gallery or see a show at Bolshoi Theatre.
  • Yaroslavl is one of the Golden Ring cities of Russia, and the largest city to visit during the middle of your Volga cruise. The town is famous for its gorgeous churches. It also offers several pedestrian-only streets full of shops and cafes, as well as a lovely embankment used as a park.
  • Uglich has a provincial setting. It was found in the 10th century and was a scene of some of medieval Russian history's most remarkable events. Here were exiled the Ivan Terrible’s 7th wife and her son Tsarevich Dmitry. Soon after, Tsarevich was mysteriously murdered here. Soon after, a dedicated to this event church ("Church of St. Demetrius on the Blood") was erected. Within the Uglich Kremlin walls is the town's oldest building - "Prince’s Palace". Other attractions are St. John’s Church and the Transfiguration Cathedral.
  • Astrakhan was founded at the end of the 13th century and is located on the Volga's left bank. Port’s activities extend 100 km downstream and over 300 km upstream along the river. Also here is the 17th-century-built 22-domed church - constructed without using a single nail. Its "Church of the Transfiguration of our Savior" and "Church of the Intercession" were rebuilt several times and are preserved in their original 17th-century design.
  • Mandrogi (Mandroga) is a small village on the Svir river recently created as a tourist attraction. It features small wooden log cabin houses. Among the attractions are the St Ipathy monastery, an open-air museum (traditional wooden architecture- izbas, mills, churches are gathered in one place).
  • Kizhi is famous the whole world over. It has become the symbol of the grandeur of unique Russian culture. Visiting the Kizhi Islands gives a great chance to appreciate the enchanting medieval atmosphere and get acquainted with the customs and free spirit of men living in a spacious area with a rigorous climate
  • Kazan. The largest port in the Volga basin, it transships cargoes transported by water alone or by water and rail. The port receives coal from Kuznetsk Basin for Kazan's heat and electric power plant, food and industrial products, and ships out products of city's enterprises and Siberian timber. The port includes Tsentral’nyi, Kama, and Volga cargo areas, as well as a number of landings, the biggest of which is Naberezhnye Chelny and Chistopol’. In the 19th century, Nizhniy became the trade center of the whole state as it was the place of the biggest fair in the Russian Empire. A proverb of that time says: "Moscow is the heart of Russia, St. Petersburg is its head, and Nizhniy Novgorod - its pocketbook". The city was renamed "Gorky" in Soviet times, in honor of the writer Maxim Gorky, born there. Until 1990, Nizhniy Novgorod was “closed” to foreigners as USSR protected its military secrets.
