The winds in Tenerife blow consistently throughout the year, influenced by the north-east trade winds. These trade winds are strongest in the spring and summer, especially July. The tides in Tenerife are also very consistent, with the greatest tidal range averaging around 2.8 meters. While winds in the Canary Islands may be strong for beginner sailors, the benevolent weather and calm seas can provide a pleasurable sailing season.

Best Time to Vacation in Tenerife

The best time to visit Tenerife and the Canary Islands is the spring and early fall. The island becomes crowded with tourists during the summer months, making it less pleasurable for sailors. Entertainment, dining, and island excursions will also be more expensive during the summer. March, April, May, and September offer the best weather and fewer tourists on land, which is when 12 Knots recommends our clients book their trips.

Sailing Difficulty Level

Sailing in Tenerife is very enjoyable for experienced sailors, and can provide a great first challenge for beginners. All seven main islands of the Canaries are within a day’s sail of each other, offering plenty of opportunities to sightsee and enjoy your West African trip to the fullest. Between the islands, however, are more challenging sailing trips that could pose difficulty for novice skippers.

Wind speeds change more quickly near Tenerife than in other seas. It is not unusual to experience a calm 10 knots, only for the winds to kick up to 30 knots within a short distance. You must be vigilant for white caps, and be ready to reef when wind speeds kick up. Therefore, those with little sailing experience may fare better with a crewed charter due to the sailing challenges that can be more complex than Caribbean sailing.

Power Catamaran: These types of boats are relatively new but have also been gaining in popularity as the two hulls keep the boat more stable when compared to a monohull. The wider beam also means more deck space and as they don't have sails or a mast, they have a lot more space on deck than a sailing catamaran rental or monohull. For a luxury catamaran charter, consider taking a crewed catamaran charter sailing vacation with an experienced skipper.

Luxury Yacht: Luxury yacht charters are available for either a sailing yacht (sailboat), catamaran or motorboat and will have a crew and host/hostess on hand to cater for whatever your needs are along with a skipper who will have a detailed knowledge of your cruising area. On a crewed yacht charter of this kind you get to create your own personal itinerary and will have far greater range than on other boats which allows for lots of variety in how you travel and what you do.

The Canary Islands offer a wonderful mix of Spanish, Latin American and African food, and you should most definitely try them when sailing in Tenerife area. Canarian cuisine should not be taken for granted considering the abundance of regional specialities available.  

Papas arrugadas , or literally, “wrinkled potatoes”, are unskinned potatoes boiled with plenty of salt. The essential condiment for potatoes and many other island dishes are mojos and traditional sauces among which mojo rojo, mojo verde and picón mojo stand out. 

Gofio is a special type of flour made from roasted sweet corn. It can be kneaded into a dough-like meal called pella or mixed with some type of broth creating a dish called gofio escaldado.  

Sancocho canario is boiled fish with potatoes, sweet potatoes, gofio, and mojo. 

A meat-rich soup, Puchero canario , is the Canarian equivalent of Spanish cocidos. Chicken, beef, and pork meat are combined with chickpeas, corn cobs, sweet potatoes, potatoes and other vegetables (such as carrots and cabbage).

Can you rent a yacht in Tenerife – do I need a license?

Small boats (under a certain horsepower or length), electric boats, crewed yacht charters and gulet charters may not require a license. Larger boats or those with more powerful engines need a skipper’s license. Before you confirm your sailing trip to Tenerife, please send us a copy and we will check it for you. You need to have the original copies on board, so don’t forget to take them. To sail in Spain, one of the following qualifications is necessary : • ICC (International Certificate of Competence), International, with valid Navigational and VHF licenses Prerequisites: RYA “Day Skipper Course” or complete the ICC Assessment form to prove competence from previous experience. If you do not have a skipper license, it is also possible to rent a boat with a skipper

Yacht charter Tenerife – the main ports

Marina del sur (tenerife).

This port is located in the tiny fishing town of Las Galletas, in the southern part of Tenerife. They have 126 moorings for yachts as long as 20 metres. They offer running water, electricity and security services available 24/7. The maximum depth is 2 metres at low tide and 7 metres at high tide. They also have a crane on spot, which is really helpful for maintenance work. There is also a recreational centre as well as several cafés, restaurants and shops nearby.

MarinaLas Galletas is located on the south coast of Tenerife. A medium-sized port capable of accommodating approximately 300 ships.

Puerto Deportivo Radazul (Tenerife)

A port in the coastal town of Radazul on the east coast of Tenerife. It offers mooring options for recreational and fishing boats. The marina is located in a picturesque bay surrounded by cliffs, with sheltered waters and stunning views of the coast.

Las Palmas (Gran Canaria)

The port La Luz, or often called Las Palmas Port, can be found halfway between Europe and the other two continents, Africa and America. Due to its suitable location, it has become one of the most important ports in the world in terms of international trade and maritime traffic. Frequently asked questions for chartering boats in the canary islands, 01. minimum rental duration.

All our boat charters have a minimum duration of 1 week, except in low season. Clients will embark before 16:00 on a Saturday and disembark at 09:00 on the following Saturday morning.

02. About Check-in and Check-out

We consider check-ins to be a very special part of our business so we pay special attention to them and they will be guided by expert navigators from our company to ensure a perfect and personalised customer experience. Check in will take place at 16:00 at the latest.

Check-out will take place at 16:00h on Friday, with the same person with whom the check-in was carried out. The check-out is only a general check of the boat, and clients can stay on board until the following day, Saturday at 09:00h.

03. About the price and the deposit

The deposit varies between 2.500€ and 3.000€ depending on the boat to rent. The detailed price of the boats is explained at the end of each boat sheet.

04. Do you offer additional discounts?

We have the following discounts with a maximum of 15% to be applied:

• 5% repeater
• 10% two-week rental
• 15% three-week rental

05. Payment Conditions

Terms of payment: 50% on booking and 50% four weeks before the start of the rental.

08. Cancellation policy

• If the charterer cancels more than 90 days prior to the commencement of the charter, he will forfeit 30% of his deposit, the total being 50% of the total boat charter.
• In extraordinary and duly justified cases, a voucher may be issued to postpone your rental week.

The Canary Islands, also known as the lucky islands, are located in the northwest of the African continent, submerged in the Atlantic Ocean and made up of 8 islands. Thanks to its subtropical climate, it is said that the Canary Islands live under an eternal spring, as its thermal oscillation is 6ºC between the different seasons of the year. The average temperature in the Canaries is between 19 and 25ºC (66.20 and 77ºF). The attractions of sailing around the Canary Islands

The Canary archipelago, thanks to the moderate winds from the north-east known as the trade winds and the proximity of the islands, is considered a European sailing paradise. During the months of April and September the trade winds tend to blow more strongly and consistently, making this "dry" season one of the best for enjoying a holiday focused on sailing and movement between islands. During the wet season, the months of October to March, winds tend to be more unpredictable and can vary more frequently between north and southeast, but winds from the west can occasionally be encountered. Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands, famous for its beautiful beaches, resorts and nightlife. As the island of Tenerife is renowned for its breathtaking beaches and volcanically scarred landscapes, there are not many bays to anchor a yacht. Additionally, the island has protected areas where anchorage is forbidden, and all anchorages should be approved by the authorities ahead of time. The surrounding waters of Tenerife provide many great opportunities to spot whales and dolphins throughout the year.

For your convenience, you can moor your yacht in one of the following marinas of Tenerife:

• Marina Santa Cruz is located in the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which also happens to be the island’s capital. This marina has 300 berths for yachts up to 90 meters long. A full range of yacht maintenance services, supermarkets and small shops are also available at this marina. Every year, the marina hosts many rallies and regattas, which must be taken into account when considering vacancy for mooring.
• Marina Tenerife is located in an artificial harbor. It has 220 water berths and additional 100 berths for dry docking, for yachts up to 16 meters long. Conveniently, a shipyard is located nearby, providing yacht repair and maintenance services.
• Marina Galera is located on the southeast coast of Tenerife. There are 176 berths for yachts up to 20 meters long. Additional accommodations include a swimming pool, shopping centers, bars, restaurants and more.
• Marina San Miguel de Abona is located in the south of Tenerife. The marina offers 344 berths for yachts up to 20 meters long, yacht repair and maintenance services and a gas station. It also provides fresh water, electricity, Wi-Fi, shopping, restaurants, bars, hotels and a golf course for its visitors.

How to rent a yacht in Tenerife

The boat rental process in Tenerife is very simple.

• Choose the duration and the starting date of your vacation. Yacht booking ahead of time is highly recommended, due to high demand during the sailing season.
• Choose a boat that will accommodate the number of your traveling party.
• Select the type of yacht you desire. Sail boats, motorboats, catamarans, RIB and many more boat options are available for rent in Tenerife.
• Pick your yacht category — a bareboat or a yacht with a skipper. Bareboat rental is available for individuals possessing a skipper's license, which allows yacht operation in Spain. If you do not have a skipper's license, you can book a yacht with a skipper.

Sailing Qualifications

To skipper a bareboat charter or flotilla yacht, you need to hold a practical sailing certificate equivalent to RYA Day Skipper Practical qualification or RYA International Certificate of Competence (ICC) . For charters in Greece, you must now have the ICC certificate . You must also be assisted by at least one competent crew member over the age of 18.

The port authorities in Greece are now insisting on one of the following practical certificates: RYA ICC (International Certificate of Competence), RYA Coastal, RYA Yachtmaster, ASA IPC (International Proficiency Certificate) or the IYT (International Yacht Training) Passport. If you hold an RYA Day Skipper or ASA104 it will no longer be accepted and you need to obtain either an ICC or IPC from the corresponding issuing body (RYA or ASA). If your RYA Coastal/Yachtmaster or ASA105/106 certificate is more than 12 years old and does not have a photo ID, then we would also strongly advise applying for an ICC or IPC. If you are a member of the RYA or ASA, you may qualify for a discount or free certificate, otherwise, you will have to pay. The approximate cost is £50. Please use this link - RYA application for the ICC or ASA application for the IPC.

For charters in Croatia, Malta and the Canaries , at least one member of the crew or the skipper will also need a VHF licence .

RYA qualifications can be obtained by RYA sailing schools in the UK or alternatively choose from one of our overseas centres in Gibraltar, Greece or Turkey .

For  Seychelles,  the local authorities require an ICC for the skipper of a bareboat or flotilla yacht charter.

For Caribbean and Tropical charters, formal qualifications are not compulsory, however, you should be Day Skipper standard and be assisted by at least one competent crew . A brief sailing resume should be provided to outline your experience.

For Thailand A Day Skipper qualification is required as a minimum and you must have at least 3 weeks of skippering experience prior to your charter. A VHF qualification is compulsory.

Winds force 2-3 (4-11 Knots)combined with generally shorter distances. Good for beginner or intermediate sailors. Line-of-sight navigation but basic knowledge of charts and ability to plot your position required.

Winds force 3-5 (7-21 Knots) with approximately 15-20nm per day. Intermediate experience required. Predominately line of sight navigation but an understanding of how to sail in open water.

Winds force 4-6 (11-27 Knots) with mileage of approximately 20nm+ per day. Ideal for experienced skippers looking to venture out to new destinations. Day skipper standard but with experienced crew would be recommended.

The Canaries are situated close to the northwest coast of Africa off the Western Sahara. With constant north-westerly wind throughout the year, the sailing is exhilarating but yacht charter in the Canaries requires more experience than in the easier Mediterranean destinations.

Embark at Santa Cruz the capital of Tenerife, about 30 minutes from the airport.

 DAY 2 : San Sebastian (28nm)

San Sebastian on La Gomera was the starting point for Columbus on his first voyage. Overnight in Puerto de Playa Santiago and savor the local Gomera cuisine. The whole island is an unexplored place of wild beauty - go ashore and enjoy the scenery of steep cliffs and beaches, palm groves and the Garajonay National Park, a unique ecological treasure of crystal clear waters and green laurel forests.

 DAY 3 : Puerto De Tazacorte, La Palma (60nm)

The most exotic of the islands formed from a volcanic crater with a coastline of majestically steep cliffs and black volcanic sands. La Palma is called the 'Pretty Isle' by Canary Islanders for its spectacularly lush vegetation, abundant clear waters and floral wealth which are in sharp contrast to the many volcanic forms that are testimony to the island's origins.

 DAY 4 : La Restinga, El Hierro (65nm)

Spectactular scenery above and below the water and the sea is so clear, a paradise for snorkellers and divers. All this, plus the kind and friendly nature of the people, makes a visit to the smallest of the Canary Islands a charming experience.

Strong north-westerly trade winds all year Force 5-8. The wind varies throughout the year but, though largely predictable, is always interesting. The weather is warm and sunny most of the time.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is a resort in the north of Tenerife, surrounded by steep cliffs of the Anaga Mountains. After that, the island was repeatedly claimed by the British and other Europeans, but the city was never taken by force.

The Museum of Archeology and Anthropology has an exhibition that displays weapons and household items of the Guanches - the indigenous inhabitants of the archipelago. In the Military Museum you can look at an exhibition of weapons from different eras, and you can get knowledge about the nature and wildlife of the island in the Museum of Nature. Museum of science and space can be visited with children up to 16 years - here a lot of informative and interesting has been collected for them, there is even a planetarium. Palmetum is a botanical garden in which only palm trees grow, containing more than 400 species of these tropical plants and divided into several zones according to belonging to a particular corner of the world.

Symbols of the city are the opera building, the skyscrapers of Torres de Santa Cruz and the largest city park in size - Garcia Sanabria (more than 60 thousand square meters).

As we depart the marina, It’s a short motor out of Bayboro Harbor and into Tampa Bay. We will hoist the sails and set off toward the famous Sunshine Skyway Bridge. It’s about a 2-hour sail until we pass under the monstrous 430-foot high bridge, continuing on for another hour before we reach Egmont Key. At any time, a dolphin, manatee, turtle, ray, or shark can make an appearance.

Upon arrival, your captain will drop anchor and prepare the dinghy for the short shuttle ride to the beach. Once on shore, you’ll find this enchanted island paradise is packed with surprises. Tortoises, Ruins, a Lighthouse, and the most beautiful beach you’ll ever see! This excursion will make you feel like you’re sailing to a remote Bahamas island.

After 2 hours of exploring, the captain will pick you up and bring you back to the yacht. We will then begin to make our way back, once again sailing under the Sunshine Skyway bridge.

If you have chosen to return in the evening, you will be greeted with the most amazing view of the setting sun as we approach St. Petersburg. Your captain will set the boat up for the perfect sunset photo before it disappears over the horizon. We will then drop the sails and motor back into the marina, just in time for you and your party to grab a late dinner in one of the many downtown St. Petersburg restaurants.

This is a full day of Sailing and Exploring. The natural beauty of Florida will be on full display and it will surely be a day your family will never forget.
