Four North American designers bringing a fresh perspective to yachting

From Miami to Toronto, stars from architecture, residential and commercial design are cutting their teeth in yachting. Rachel Ingram meets a few of these wave-makers redefining the landscape…

Carla Guilhem Design

Florida-based designer Carla Guilhem developed a passion for interior design while growing up in Brazil with her family, who owned a furniture business. She studied architecture and interior design and lived in Italy and Spain before settling in the US where she cut her teeth on residential projects in New York and the Hamptons. Guilhem founded her eponymous design studio in 2012, headquartering the business in Miami: “a nexus of cultural and design influences that resonate with my ethos.”

Her foray into yachting came through a client who asked her to design the interior of custom motor yacht Lady Lene . Her brief was to create a home at sea for three generations of the family, and in the end the yacht won the 2023 BOAT International Design & Innovation Award for Best Interior. The award was “a milestone that cemented our studio’s reputation in the industry,” she recalls.

The studio is currently engaged with several new yacht builds across Europe, most notably Project 111.11 , a “ground-breaking” 34.1-metre yacht under construction at the Van der Valk Shipyard in the Netherlands. “The interiors are crafted to transcend our current understanding of forms and spaces,” Guilhem says.

“Combining classic and futuristic lines,  the design immerses the owner and his guests in a sensation of outer space, integrating imaginary organic forms throughout. Flowing curves and seamless transitions create an otherworldly experience that harmonises with the natural elements of the sea. A monochrome and earthy colour palette further enhances the celestial ambience.”

Guilhem claims not to adhere to a specific signature style, believing that the studio’s USP is its ability to “draw out and integrate our clients’ specific tastes into a design that is both timeless and deeply personal.” While each project is unique, she has observed a pivot toward designs filled with elements that serve a clear purpose, and for beauty that’s “matched with utility.”

She adds, “There is also a prevailing demand for creating interiors that serve as sanctuaries at sea. Our designs are increasingly focused on fostering this connection, creating environments that are restorative and peaceful.”

Bonesteel Trout Hall

California studio Bonesteel Trout Hall was founded 20 years ago by partners Heidi Bonesteel, Michele Trout and Jill Hall, all of whom were born and raised in the Golden State. From their offices in Pacific Palisades and Newport Beach, they offer “Southern California flair of laid-back glamour.”

The design leads are Bonesteel, who previously worked with builders and designers in Los Angeles, and Trout, who cut her teeth in hospitality and luxury hotels. The duo claims to have no signature design and instead choose to adopt a personal and versatile approach each time.

“We integrate our clients’ taste, respecting the architectural integrity of each property and ultimately, try to pioneer our clients into a modern realm beyond their wildest dreams,” they say. “This chameleon-like approach yields a diverse body of work, resulting in everything from a sprawling French Normandy manor rooted in tradition to an avant garde New York pied-à-terre apartment.”

The studio’s key focus is residential, but it recently dipped a toe into yachting, designing the interior of the 55-metre Amels Nomad . The owner, a repeat client, brought them on midway through the construction.

“We were eager to take on something completely new, working with the family to create something with function in mind but also transforming their idea of what a yacht could look like,” they say. “The family really wanted their yacht to represent their native California upbringing so we infused functional pieces with a contemporary yet casual California look. The hull colour, a vibrant royal blue, informed the colour palette — we used that as a jumping off point and brought in citrus yellow as a nod to their sunny southern California lifestyle.”

Their go-to brands include Christian Liaigre Furniture — “their pieces are timelessly contemporary with subtle nautical details” — and DEDON for outdoor furniture — “their work gives a highly modern look with an ergonomic comfort that no client can resist.” For Nomad , they also pulled pieces from Summit, citing the brand’s “highly functional” products with “classic California depth and comfort.”

The designers have seen trends in yacht and residential design merging. “Clients are pushing for organic forms, whether it’s nesting pebble coffee tables or curved sofas. Additionally, they’re looking for a more intentional and subtle use of colour. Clients want designers to celebrate the natural landscape rather than compete with it.”

Bonetti/Kozerski Architecture

New York City-based architecture and design firm Bonetti/Kozerski Architecture was founded at the turn of the millennium by Italian and British architects Enrico Bonetti and Dominic Kozerski. The pair met in the mid-1990s while working for American architect Peter Marino and quickly bonded. “We opened our own office in 2000 when we had the chance to design a large apartment for fashion designer Donna Karan,” Bonetti says. “Since then, we split our work between high-end residential and high-end retail, designing flagship stores for different brands.”

The studio, which has also worked on numerous hospitality projects, is renowned for its minimalist style. “Our goal is first of all to provide an extremely functional space and then to disguise such efficiency with an elegant and well-balanced design that will limit visual distractions and would create a natural rhythm through the spaces,” Bonetti says.

It’s this aesthetic that inspired Italian shipyard Benetti to grant the duo their first yacht project, the first yacht in the new Oasis series. “We were called by Giovanna Vitelli to provide an interior vision for a new line of yachts that was under development with RWD ,” Bonetti says. “We used our foreignness to the boat world as a plus, and we created what has been described as a fresher and calmer design that blurs the line between the interior and the exterior areas.”

The 40-metre Benetti Oasis 40M line received such a positive response that the studio was brought back to design a smaller version, the 34-metre Oasis 34M, which was equally successful.

As a yachting industry outsider looking in, Bonetti has noted an “overall improvement” in yacht design in recent years. “We notice in general that there are fewer interiors designed for a wow factor, which, as yacht designer Terence Disdale brilliantly said, is the fastest ageing element in any design. We notice clients asking us for spaces that can have multiple functions: this is something that we really enjoy working on.”

The studio always works with trusted suppliers for its yachts, many of them from the founders’ home countries, Italy and England. “We very often incorporate fabrics from the Italian company Dedar, for their quality and for the wide range of textures and colours,” Bonetti says. “We also like to specify our line of outdoor teak furniture from Sutherland Furniture.”

Over the past three decades, Toronto-based design firm Burdifilek has built a solid reputation in the fields of retail, hospitality and real estate. Praised for its design style of “quiet, understated elegance with a global and timeless appeal,” the studio now has its sights set on yachting.

“We are creators of an international style, transcending trends to blend a distinctive design vision,” creative partner Diego Burdi says. “Our design team is committed to excellence and craftsmanship, and working with highly skilled artisans is very important in our studio.”

Burdifilek’s first yacht project was the interior of the 60-metre Amels 60 Entourage , completed in 2023. The studio joined the project through an existing client, an experienced yacht owner who was able to guide them through the process.

“We were thrilled,” Burdi says. “Our studio started researching and exploring the yacht world. By doing so, we quickly understood the importance of the experience of yachting, and the contact one can have with the exterior environment and the sea. We knew the interior needed to be the background for the exterior experience.

“For us it was important to feel that we are on a yacht, so we made design decisions to embrace the marine language by complementing the shape and form of the yacht into the interior design. For example, the lower deck bedrooms have curved walls, and the bed follows the vessel’s hull.”

The colour scheme they selected complements the ocean. “A monochromatic palette frames the exterior, allowing full view of the reflective waters,” Burdi says. “Knowing that the client had a colourful art collection, we created a softer palette backdrop to accentuate their art collection. The whole interior is holistically coherent.”

Burdi insists the studio actively avoids trends. “To create unique environments, you need to go beyond the trends and push boundaries,” he says. “Typically, clients will discuss their programming but when it comes to design, they leave us to create with our own DNA.” This extends to their pick of suppliers, which changes with every project. “Our studio is constantly researching and exploring new talents.”

Tour a New York Art Deco Superyacht Worth Millions

Designing the interior of a superyacht worth hundreds of millions of dollars is no easy task. It’s a delicate balance between innovation and strict safety regulations. And client demands might range from minutely detailed custom stairwells to permanently affixed statues weighing several tons. Andrew Winch, founder of the London-based design firm Winch Design, has dedicated a career of several decades to outfitting private jets and yachts according to such requests. So when a wealthy client decided to buy a second yacht, the question of who would design it was simple to answer: the same firm that created the first one.

In 2004, Winch outfitted the Phoenix , a 197-foot yacht that featured interiors influenced by 1920s Parisian Art Deco. This time, the owner wanted something bigger, more bold for what he aptly named Phoenix² . “The client once again wanted a yacht that was Art Deco in theme, but with this yacht, he wanted to have New York City as the influence,” says Winch. “The client works in real estate and has a real fascination with New York’s skyscrapers.”

After accompanying the owner to the Big Apple and taking notes on such specific landmarks as the Chrysler Building and Radio City Music Hall, Winch got to work. Three and a half years later, with the help of German-based Lurssen Shipyard, Winch’s largest custom-built craft was completed.

At the very front of the 295-foot megayacht is an 18-foot figurehead of a phoenix. Weighing five tons, the work of art was inspired by the shape of the Chrysler Building. “The owner is drawn to the power and charisma of New York’s skyscrapers,” says Winch. “He wanted the bow of the yacht to include a phoenix because, metaphorically, the phoenix rises to soaring heights much as skyscrapers do.” As with the original Phoenix , the Phoenix² features a private office, an exterior deck including a Jacuzzi, as well as numerous bedrooms. The owner’s private suite features a full 180-degree window, offering views of the surrounding seascape, as well as its own personal Jacuzzi.

Elsewhere within the yacht, the client challenged Winch and his team to be unique in every element of design. “Each section of space, from the dining room to the stairwells, needed to meet a high level of expectations,” says Winch. As such, the dining room was built to appear as if it were a Broadway stage, while a main stairwell was constructed using satin-brushed stainless steel with visible bolts to look as if it had come from the 1920s.

Although Winch Design is not at liberty to give the exact price of the Phoenix² , it confirmed the cost was $100 million to $200 million.

Marilee: The inside story of the 1926 Herreshoff NY40’s remarkable restoration

Yachting World

  • September 3, 2019

Marilee is one of just four remaining ‘Fighting Forties’. The 1926 Nat Herreshoff design has just undergone an incredible restoration. Alison Langley reports

When the New York Yacht Club commissioned the new NY40 one-design class in 1916 Nathanael Herreshoff’s objective was to design a competitive racer that was seaworthy enough for ocean racing, yet also provided elegant accommodation for coastal cruising.

The rules required that owners helm the yacht – except when the boat was on a run or a reach. Professional crew was limited to four, with an additional two allowed when racing. The rest of the crew would be ‘Corinthian’ sailors.

The design initially came under criticism for its wide beam and high freeboard – a major shift from Herreshoff’s earlier class racers. It was given the moniker ‘the flying saucer’, but it wasn’t long before the boat’s performance was proven and the flying saucers soon became known as the ‘Fighting Forties’.

The 12 original NY40s only saw two racing seasons before World War I put a halt to sailing. Competition resumed in 1920. In 1926, two new NY40s were launched: Marilee (hull 955) for Edward I Cudahy, and her sistership, Rugosa II (hull 983). The two boats were identical in their lines, but Marilee featured a newly designed coach house, accommodation plan, and a larger cockpit.

The NY40s were known to race hard in their heyday, producing some infamous battles. The boats were also renowned for their hearty seaworthiness, and despite their vast sail areas were famously rarely reefed. Just four NY40s survive and race today: the well-known Rowdy , Chinook , Rugosa , and Marilee .

Although the war had ended, the United States had not fully recovered economically in the ’20s. The trend was for smaller boats and by 1927 most of the NY40 fleet had been sold, continuing to cruise and race only periodically.

In 1933, Marilee was given an engine, and was one of several Forties who traded her gaff and massive sail areas for a more manageable Marconi rig.

She received her first major refit some six decades later, in preparation for the 2001 America’s Cup Jubilee Regatta at Cowes. Seventy-five years after the last true season of NY40 class racing, Marilee and Rugosa tied for first overall at the regatta. Marilee went on to race with success on the Med classic circuit.

Stripped back

A bottom-up restoration for Marilee wasn’t on the radar in 2014. Then just some aesthetic improvements, racing enhancements, and ‘light structural’ projects were on the docket.

French & Webb was chosen to undertake the work, while Kurt Hasselbalch, curator of the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) Hart Nautical Collections, which houses Herreshoff’s original plans and drawings, was to prove a valuable member of the restoration team.

marilee-classic-yacht-herreshoff-restoration-chain-fails-credit-alison-langley

Marilee was literally pulled back into shape using chain fails

In early winter 2014 they began with a 3D scan of the existing hull. This, combined with a CAD drawing created from the original Herreshoff plans, enabled the team to accurately examine Marilee ’s current shape and compare it with the design from 1926. They discovered that the deck line and sheer were grossly misshapen – by over four inches – from years of unsupported rigging loads.

That first winter a portion of the keel was replaced, along with the horn timber, and approximately 80 per cent of the floor frames. Bronze plates were incorporated for added strength and resilience in the floor frame connections and the mast base itself. Additionally, two of the hull frames were cut to double thickness for exponentially more hull stiffness.

Around half the planking was replaced, both single and double planks, using custom- designed fasteners. The wheel was replaced with a tiller and an accompanying rudder, all built according to original Herreshoff plans. Lastly, the engine was moved from far aft, where it was unsupported, to the centre of the boat – better for racing and also for the structure of the boat.

marilee-classic-yacht-herreshoff-order-book-credit-alison-langley

The original Herreshoff order book shows hull #955

After being rapidly relaunched for a summer of racing in 2014, the following autumn Marilee entered her second phase of restoration, and there was quite a bit more to do. The yard had to completely rip the boat apart, breaking it all the way back down to just framing and planking.

When the chainplates were removed, it was found that the boltholes were oblong, and that the sheer plank had lifted vertically from the strain on planks below. To avoid any similar problems in the future, and strengthen the mast-step foundation, the chainplates were attached to a large bronze load plate that would be fastened to the hull framing. A team of metalsmiths custom-fabricated all the hardware, in place, to ensure a perfect fit.

The high-stress area of the running backstay terminals were treated the same way, but in practice this was much more complex, because it meant hand-rolling a load plate to fit a curved area of the hull. Additionally a bronze knee was welded to the framework. The largest loads are now distributed along this custom-fabricated bronze framework.

Originality

When Marilee was originally launched, her coach house and larger cockpit gave her a distinctive silhouette. But by 2015 Marilee ’s deck furniture had grown tired, heavy and Victorian in style. It was not up to the usual Herreshoff standard.

Todd French and team planned to return Marilee to her original proportions on deck. The coach houses, skylight, hatches, coamings, and cockpit were all rebuilt to correct scale and accuracy, while restoring them to clean, utilitarian, fine shapes.

Additional design elements, such as the 90-year-old antique glass layered under safety glass, brought character back to the coachhouse. Marilee ’s signature pugilist ‘Fighting Forties’ racing logo was etched in the glass mirror.

marilee-classic-yacht-herreshoff-interior-credit-alison-langley

River-aged cypress and antique textiles bring character to the interior

Marilee ’s owner had the bold vision to create an interior that reflected the yacht’s century-long provenance while creating an open space below. Having seen hundreds of classic yachts around the world, he realised that many interiors were dominated by darkness in all things from varnish to seat cushions. These ‘cigar room’ interiors often simply don’t translate in a modern era, where people value a more relaxed style of comfort.

It became clear from comparing plans that ever since the inception of the class, the interior space has been personal to each owner. In fact, Herreshoff designed many different layouts to accommodate the widely varied preferences of each NY40 owner. With this in mind, Marilee ’s restoration team set out to create a fresh, innovative space.

The team worked with Paul Waring of Stephens Waring Yacht Design, to create a traditional and properly constructed interior with an updated layout for modern day use. They chose to emphasise one of Herreshoff’s guiding principles: of uncluttered sightlines.

marilee-classic-yacht-herreshoff-loadplates-credit-alison-langley

Bronze load plates and additional hanging knees make interior features

Panelled bulkheads, seating areas, and functional areas were crafted out of cypress, as specified in Herreshoff’s NY40 plans. To create the desired patina, materials were sought that were authentic to Marilee ’s original design. So old growth cypress logs that were sunken for 150 years in a North Carolina riverbed were resurrected and sawn for her interior bulkheads.

The team used distressing techniques and custom finishes that were available at the time of her original build, to create a sense of depth and age to the newly made panels.

Metalwork of bronze and copper was forged, cast, and fabricated with metallurgy techniques used over a century ago in Bristol on the USA’s eastern seaboard, integrating structural and aesthetic elements.

During restoration Marilee’s original compass was inset into the top of a chest of drawers in the aft cabin

With the help of interior designer Angela Thompson, antique linens, leathers, wood and pewter accents brought additional texture and warmth to the space. An American flag, used for the privacy café curtain, is an authentic 45-star flag. Leather drawer handles and locker pulls were sewn by hand, using old weaving techniques.

A modern addition came in the form of hidden LED lights, which were installed to highlight the design details and emphasise the interior sight line. The updated lights also extend the usefulness of the cabins and saloon well beyond sundown.

Ultimately, the owner felt strongly that stepping into a classic yacht’s interior should be comforting, like wearing a well-loved T-shirt or pair of jeans.

Marconi and gaff rigs

marilee-classic-yacht-herreshoff-mast-credit-alison-langley

Marilee is the only NY40 to have had both rigs designed by Herreshoff. All-bronze hardware was used for authenticity

When looking through all of the original drawings at MIT’s Hart Nautical Collections, Kurt Hasselbalch discovered more #955 plans for Marilee than he had previously known existed.

In particular, he uncovered a drawing of a Marconi rig, originally designed for Marilee ’s 1933 refit. To find a Herreshoff-penned design of a modern rig was an incredible discovery.

It was decided that it would be possible to sail Marilee with two different rigs. Armed with the original Herreshoff drawings, the team set out to design a Bermudan rig that would be as fast and competitive as her current setup, maybe even faster. It also gives the owner options, with a larger sail inventory and the advantages of flexible race ratings.

A unique custom fabrication was designed to support the loads at the bow that were expected with a Bermudan rig. Blindly notched into the underside of her bowsprit is a split bronze tang, ready to accept the new headstay and tack fitting.

This tang is directly attached to a giant bronze framework that was carved into the stemhead, with multiple bolts connecting the deck structure to this new stem fitting. In less than an hour, the bowsprit can be removed and the rigging adjusted to accept the headstay loads of a Bermudan rig.

marilee-classic-yacht-herreshoff-foredeck-credit-alison-langley

Marilee is raced without lifelines, but threaded sockets were machined along the edge of her deck to help crew stay safe when sailing offshore between regattas

At the transom, a similarly hidden provision was installed to accept a fixed backstay attachment. The new mast was also designed to plug directly into the existing chainplate locations. The mast step and partners were elongated with specific moulds designed to fit either gaff or Marconi mast.

The construction proved to be a challenge, explains Todd French of French & Webb: “Because of the fore and aft forces on this type of rig, the 84ft [Marconi] mast had a more elliptical section. Taller and lighter than the gaff round mast, she was supported by double sets of spreaders.”

Internal halyards were used, and all mast wall penetrations were reinforced with Epoxy G-10 Tube. A square boom section accommodates a loose-footed mainsail.

“ Marilee ’s mast, hollow in section, was constructed of eight staves – three pieces on the front, three on the back, and two expanded side pieces provide a stiffer fore and aft section shape,” explains French. “Skilfully sculpted, these hollow spars appear like one piece of evenly toned wood where even the glue joints look like a grain line.”

8 Interior Design Firms Making a Splash in the Yacht World

From patricia urquiola to ken fulk, these high-profile designers are nixing traditional yacht interiors for free flowing designs with luxe furnishings., by andrew sessa.

Celebrated architects and decorators known for shore-side projects are increasingly taking to the water, where they’re proving they’re anything but “at sea.” Armed with high-profile yacht commissions, these designers are throwing the cookie-cutter layouts and tired aesthetic tropes of typical marine interiors overboard. Instead, they’re employing floorplans that flow more gracefully, luxe furnishings and blue-chip art that would feel at home in the most sophisticated urban pied-à-terre.

The force of this shift could be felt at September’s Monaco Boat Show, where new designers brought an outsider’s eye to the industry. One especially envelope-pushing case in point: Oceanco recently began an initiative to reimagine the super yacht from top to bottom, tapping forward-thinking Dutch interiors studio Tank as well as former Rolls-Royce design lead Giles Taylor to make it happen. While we wait to see, and sail on, what they’ll create, we’ve gathered an elite crew of star decorators, many brand-new to the life aquatic, whose genre-changing work is on the water right now.

This studio launched its superyacht arm, Njord , in 2020 to meet the needs of residential clients spending more time on the water during the pandemic. “They loved their yachts for a week or two, but the boats didn’t feel like home when you lived on them for months,” says cofounder and creative director Marie Soliman-Berglund, whose team set out to give the vessels that special ambience. Apart from adding decadent details such as decks from French flooring purveyor Oscar Ono and cutting-edge air-filtration technology, Njord created taller rooms, or the illusion thereof. The main saloon on the 249-foot Eden features a metallic fabric overhead and an opening to the floor above. Combined, the interventions give the space a “sense of height and elegance” that’s tricky to achieve in a ship’s tight quarters.

Italian yard Sanlorenzo recently built upon its award-winning aesthetic credentials by enlisting Spanish-born Urquiola for an ongoing collaboration. Featuring a travertine-encased central staircase of bronzed steel and oak and pieces from Urquiola’s own furniture collections, SD96 puts a refreshing focus on flowing spaces and open views. “I like working on projects where the client asks you to do something you’ve never done before,” says Urquiola, who notes that being “a beginner in the industry helped me propose my personal way of experiencing the boat, making sure that the usual comfort of a home is replicated in a smaller space.”

Lauded for his recent work with Maybourne Hotels —including London’s Connaught , Berkeley and Claridge’s —the Irish-born O’Sullivan crafts superyacht interiors that incorporate his signature mix of custom pieces, midcentury furniture, curated artworks, rich textures and colorful accents. His 164-foot Mosaique and 221-foot Icon impress with such atypical nautical furnishings as a one-ton serpeggiante -marble soaking tub, a Vladimir Kagan glass-topped coffee table and curving sofa, Pierre Chareau lighting and custom pieces from Apparatus. Currently he’s at work on the full refit of a 230-foot yacht and annual updates to Icon .

Peter Mikic

Mikic , a former fashion designer, actually made his interiors debut at sea, crafting elements for London property developers the Candy brothers’ yacht in 2006, which led Elisabeth Murdoch to commission Mikic to decorate her entire 159-foot Elisabeth F. two years later. “I designed it in a way that was like an apartment,” he recalls of the vessel, which won awards at both the Monaco and Antigua boat shows. “I had almost no built-in furniture, which is crazy.” Today he continues to buck marine norms. Combining classic elegance with playful colors, patterns and textures, he gave a 109.5-foot yacht a bachelor-pad feel, and he’s now putting sheepskin-clad Fritz Hansen chairs and tufted boucle sofas on a 195-foot sailing yacht alongside contemporary British artworks by the likes of Bridget Riley.

Yale School of Architecture grads Eric Clough and Eun Sun Chun—whose projects include a 6,000-square-foot Houston penthouse and more than 150 Christian Louboutin boutiques— recently completed their first marine commission, a refit of Monte Carlo Yachts’ 105-foot MCY 105 for a client in Hong Kong. Chun and Clough selected surprisingly seaworthy fabrics from Loro Piana and Hermès , furniture by Blackman Cruz and Carl Hansen and lighting from the Urban Electric Co. One particularly homelike vignette finds classic Hans Wegner Wishbone chairs surrounding a French-walnut dining table under an abstract painting by Laurent Hours.

Foley & Cox

Founding principal Michael Cox and design director Zunilda Madera bring an acute appreciation of luxe details to yacht interiors (thanks in no small part to the decade Cox spent with Ralph Lauren ’s home brands). For the 152.5-foot vessel of a client whose homes in Monaco and Austria they decorated, the duo combined custom furniture from DeAngelis —including plush upholstered sofas with a depth and a softness that defy at-sea expectations—with finds from the Paris Flea Market . These idiosyncratic pieces, they say, bring a collected, eclectic patina to the yacht, reflecting the client’s personality.

Ken Fulk Halekai Deck

A consummate showman, Fulk just completed his first yacht interior, a wooden sailing vessel for longtime clients. It combines historic inspiration with whimsical contemporary twists. The ship’s name, Halekai, means “home on the sea” in Hawaiian, which points to the state of mind of both clients and design team. With Honolulu’s Iolani Palace as a jumping-off point, Fulk combined the European and the indigenous, creating such evocative details as carved teak doors and custom marquetry in teak and koa wood and embroidered headboards based on a royal Hawaiian wedding quilt.

Tara Bernerd

Known for designing hotels and restaurants from Chicago to Osaka, Bernerd first brought her signature industrial élan and masculine edge to the sea nearly a decade ago. “Yacht interiors so often veer towards the traditional,” she says. “We’ve sought to bring a fresh, contemporary, sporty feel with pale washed woods and beautiful linens mixed with textured fabrics.” On a just-completed 102-foot Sanlorenzo yacht, marble insets adorn built-in cupboards while panels of green onyx clad a bathroom’s walls and the front of the glam below-deck bar.

A Boat Designed to Be a Breath of Fresh Air

The creators of the latest vessel from Azimut Yachts went to great lengths to reduce its emissions, but even they won’t call it green.

A white yacht in an outdoor swimming pool. Behind is a building with the sign “Teatro.” To the right, a group of people take photos.

By Ian Volner

Reporting from Milan

This article is part of our Design special section about water as a source of creativity.

In the middle of Milan Design Week last month, in the middle of the Bagni Misteriosi — a historic bathing complex in the Porta Romana neighborhood — the Italian luxury shipbuilder Azimut Yachts hosted an unusual exhibition. It was a celebration of the company’s latest offering: the Seadeck 6, which made its debut last year and features interiors by the design team of Matteo Thun and Antonio Rodriguez.

Having been lowered into the facility by crane, the nearly 60-foot vessel was set afloat in an outdoor swimming pool. There it bobbed, traversed by hordes of well-coiffed guests while a concealed apparatus shrouded it in bursts of atmospheric steam. Surreal, elegant, not a little absurd, it was a scene straight out of Fellini, with overtones of Werner Herzog’s boat-hoisting epic “Fitzcarraldo.”

But the thing that made it most unusual? “Azimut wanted to make this the most sustainable boat on the market,” Mr. Rodriguez said. “We tried to do that.”

The ultimate playthings for the ultrawealthy, high-end pleasure craft would not seem optimal candidates for greening. Yet a growing number of manufacturers and designers are trying to change that, producing yachts both large and (comparatively) small assembled from fewer and less carbon-intensive materials, requiring a fraction of the power to run and drawing more of their energy from renewable sources.

In a peculiar twist for an industry uniquely exposed to supply-chain shocks and the vicissitudes of geopolitics (the loss of the once-lucrative Russian market continues to smart), global brand leaders appear to be making the move toward energy efficiency of their own accord, rather than in response to any explicit demand from their clientele.

“We will have to see if the world is ready,” said Giovanna Vitelli, Azimut’s chairwoman, as she stood aboard the Seadeck 6 during its not-quite maiden, not-quite voyage.

It is an approach that entails some risk. In January, Silent Yachts — an Austrian solar-electric catamaran company with facilities in Fano, Italy — was reported to be approaching bankruptcy amid problems with both its corporate parent and a key subcontractor. A former client stepped in to rescue the brand from insolvency, yet challenges remain. In a recent interview with the trade publication Superyacht News, the company’s new chief operating officer, Fabrizio Iarrera, spoke of the “costs associated with creating an entirely new market.”

Still, the push toward more sustainable yachting appears to be barreling forward, part of a broader shift in the role of design in the industry. Seven years ago, Bonetti/Kozerski Architecture in New York — known for its plush hotel interiors for the hospitality magnate Ian Schrager — was invited by Azimut’s sister company Benetti to develop a new yacht concept, the Oasis. It was one of the rare instances in which Benetti, founded in 1873, had sought out collaborators with no previous maritime experience, and all parties took it as an opportunity to import a set of values they viewed as lacking in the boating world.

According to Enrico Bonetti, the architecture firm’s co-founder, boat design previously favored grand spaces that no one actually liked. “There’s always this big table nobody’s using, then you step into another place with shiny things,” he said. “We didn’t follow that.” With its open, airy living space, wood paneling and notable lack of gold leaf, the Oasis represented a more humane vision for the yacht of the future, one constrained by at least the appearance of refinement and reserve, though it was ritzy nonetheless.

That low-key tendency is very much in line with the decarbonization campaign now underway at Azimut and other builders. In recent years, design studios like Zaha Hadid Architects and Pininfarina have turned out yacht proposals that pair sleek visuals with reduced reliance on fossil fuels; later this year, Yves Béhar, the Swiss-born product and furniture maestro, will unveil his own take on the trend — a catamaran designed for an as-yet unnamed manufacturer. “It’s essentially an E.V.,” said Mr. Béhar, who was also in Milan for the design fair.

Underlying the designer eco-yacht phenomenon is the intuitive sense, as Antonio Rodriguez put it, that “silent luxury” is fast displacing opulence. Where previous generations of yachters sought to flaunt their wealth, today’s owners may be less keen to draw attention to their own affluence. In reducing their carbon footprint, boatmakers are hoping to lure customers eager to reduce their profile, while still allowing them to ply the seven seas in style.

The Seadeck 6 certainly does that. With a crisp, white exterior — the work of the veteran yacht designer Alberto Mancini — the ship sleeps up to eight in three below-deck cabins. Topside, guests can sprawl in fore and aft lounges, or take lunch prepared in a semi-concealed galley, served on an elegant foldout table. The interior palette is muted, the contours soft, and everywhere, Ms. Vitelli said, the intention was to let people “feel close to water” rather than immuring them in an oceangoing penthouse.

Relatively speaking, the Seadeck’s ecological credentials are also impressive. Nearly every feature has been retooled for minimal environmental impact: replacing the customary teak deck with sustainably sourced cork; covering the walls and upholstering the seating with organic and recycled materials; even sealing the hull with something the company refers to as an ‘eco-gel finish.’” Most important, the craft incorporates a still-novel (for marine propulsion) hybrid engine, capable of a top speed of 33 knots with the ability to navigate about 200 miles offshore — enough for a quick spin from Fort Lauderdale to the Bahamas.

Add it together, and the company claims the Seadeck 6 and its larger cousin, the 71-foot Seadeck 7, achieve an operational carbon output 60 percent that of comparable vessels.

It’s a start, but only that. A comparative analysis with a similarly sized Azimut product — coupled with statistics from the Environmental Protection Agency — suggests that the cruise from Fort Lauderdale to Nassau would contribute roughly 4,400 pounds of carbon dioxide on the Seadeck 6, well over what the average American produces in a month.

And then there are the more immediate costs: around $2.8 million for the Seadeck 6 and $4.25 million for the Seadeck 7. Ms. Vitelli said the company hopes that enough buyers will come aboard to make price reductions possible in future.

A lot is riding on these hopes. Elsewhere in Milan, at the giant exhibition hall of the Salone del Mobile furniture fair, a talk session with a group of yacht experts underscored the stakes: During the panel, Stefano de Vivo, the chief commercial officer of the luxury yacht brand Ferretti Group, presented a slide showing Italy’s dominance in the custom-yacht sector, with domestic manufacturers taking a large share of the $9 billion global marketplace.

Mr. de Vivo declared sustainability essential to shipbuilding’s ongoing success and spoke of a general convergence with the design field at large. “As a shipyard, we’ve had to become less ‘marine,’” he said.

Back at the Bagni Misteriosi, mariners did seem in somewhat short supply, as various design lovers and Salone personalities (including the celebrated architect Michele de Lucchi, who helped create an on-site installation for Azimut) swanned around the bathhouse garden and its waterborne centerpiece. As an image of an ecologically sensitive future, the spectacle seemed off the mark — but then the Seadeck’s creators are careful not to make any overly sweeping claims as to whether their yacht, or any yacht for that matter, can truly be deemed an ecological asset.

“We don’t really like the word ‘sustainable,’” Mr. Rodriguez said. “We prefer to say it’s ‘conscious.’”

All about the $40m bayesian yacht that capsized, leaving 6 dead and 1 still missing.

The massive superyacht Bayesian that sank off the coast of Italy on Monday won numerous awards for its sleek interior design — and was sold to its original owner for nearly $40 million.

The luxury sailing ship was carrying 22 people when it capsized and sank during a fierce storm early Monday.

A handout picture, provided by Perini Navi Press Office, shows the ''Bayesian'', the 56-metre sailing unit sunk in a violent storm off Palermo, Italy, 19 August 2024

The bodies of five of six missing passengers, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch , 69, have been recovered. His daughter, 18-year-old Hannah, is the only one of six known killed in the tragedy yet to be found, a source close to the rescue operation told Reuters.

The ship’s chef, Recaldo Thomas, has also been confirmed dead.

Divers continued searching the wreckage of the 184-foot-long, British-flagged vessel, previously called Salute, on Wednesday after discovering four of the bodies.

When it was built in 2008, the Bayesian had the tallest aluminum mast in the world, standing at 237 feet, earning it the award for best exterior styling at the World Superyacht Awards in 2009, the Telegraph reported.

The sprawling superyacht’s interior, decorated with sleek, minimalist furnishings created by Remi Tessier, has also won numerous awards.

The ship, which accommodated 12 guests, had a master bedroom and three double and two twin bedrooms.

It also featured beige sofas, dark wood furnishings, and a teak deck equipped with a large canvas awning to keep guests cool, according to the outlet.

Some of the ship’s styling, including thin brown pillars and miniature terra cotta sculptures, was inspired by Japanese culture.

What to know after a tornado sank the yacht Bayesian off the coast of Sicily:

  • A superyacht capsized off the coast of Sicily after a tornado hit the area early Monday, killing seven passengers.
  • British tech tycoon Mike Lynch was identified as one of the bodies pulled from the wreckage. His teenage daughter, Hannah, was the final one to be recovered.
  • Lynch — known as “Britain’s Bill Gates” — had invited guests from Clifford Chance, a legal firm that represented him, and Invoke Capital, his own company, on the voyage,  according to the Telegraph .
  • Security camera footage shot from 650 feet from where the  Bayesian sank Monday  shows it disappearing.
  • A rare and unexpected “black swan” weather event may have led to the  Bayesian’s speedy demise , maritime experts say.

The extravagant ship won best interior at the International Superyacht Society Awards in 2008 and was also voted one of the best large sailing yachts at the 2009 World Superyacht Awards, according to the outlet.

The yacht’s original owner, John Groenewoud, a Dutch real estate developer, reportedly bought the ship for £30 million ($39 million) when it was built. In 2014, he sold the ship with an asking price of £27 million ($35 million).

The Bayesian is currently owned by Revtom, a company that listed Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, as its legal owner.

It was named after the Bayesian statistical model that helps financial investors calculate risk — the subject of Lynch’s PhD that later helped him build his empire.

The vessel, operated by yachting company Camper & Nicholsons, had twin 965hp MTU engines, which gave it a range of 3,600 nautical miles at 13 to 15 knots (14 to 17 mph).

An ambulance carries the body of a person which was found at the scene where the luxury yacht sank.

RSB Rigging carried out rig service works on the ship with Astilleros de Mallorca, a shipyard facility in Palma, in November 2016.

The Bayesian returned in September 2020 for scheduled service works, including having its mast removed and reinstalled.

Steve Branagh, managing director of RSB Rigging, told the Telegraph: “At this time, our deepest sympathies go out to the friends and families of all those affected by this dreadful tragedy.”
