Despite being a sports watch, this timepiece oozes with luxury, thanks to its solid 950 platinum bezel. We don’t see this alloy used very often by Rolex, but we love that they have opted to feature it on this watch. The sand-blasted platinum keeps the watch feeling utilitarian, while the raised and glossy, high-polished numerals make it both easy to read and wonderfully elevated. Although the color of platinum isn’t radically much different than the color of the 904L stainless steel case and Oyster bracelet, it is enough to add distinct flair, and perfectly represents the whole ‘stealth wealth’ concept. Plus, you can also find older examples of this Rolesium Yacht-Master that are fitted with matching sandblasted platinum dials that really brings the watch full circle.

The nautical-inspired yacht-master gets a larger case, new movement and a combo of white gold case, black ceramic bezel and oysterflex-rubber strap.

Rolex has its habits… Baselworld always means an array of small novelties (different dials, different colors or different materials on existing watches) and one big novelty. And this year, the big one is a new, sportier, larger, bolder take on one not-so-hot watch, the Yacht-Master. Meet the new Rolex Yacht-Master 42, with increased size, black ceramic bezel, new movement, Oysterflex rubber strap and in white gold.

History of the Rolex Yacht-Master

The Yacht-Master stands in a category all its own. Unlike the rest of the sports collection, the Yacht-Master is one of the few not to be a proper instrument watch. Still, as most Rolex sports watches, it was designed with one purpose in mind: nautical adventures and regattas (at least for the Yacht-Master II). While Rolex already had various watches related to the sea (Submariner and Sea-Dweller), the Yacht-Master wasn’t intended to be as tool-ish as its sisters. Still, it shares lots of features and design cues with the Submariner. It could be seen as the nautical watch to wear on deck, and not below the sea-level.

The first generation of Rolex Yacht-Master was introduced in 1992. This wasn’t the first time, however, the name Yacht-Master was mentioned at Rolex. In the late 1960s, the brand developed a nautical-inspired Daytona, with a regatta counter, also named Yacht-Master – a chronograph that remained at the prototype stage and was never commercialized.

The first model was the reference 16628, a Yellow Gold model with a white dial and and black hour indexes. The design of this watch feels quite familiar, so it’s easy to speculate about the inspiration and the positioning of this Yacht-Master in the collection. Some stories (and keep in mind that there’s nothing official here) say that Rolex, during the 1980’s, experimented with tons of different options to revamp the iconic Submariner. But the decision was to keep the Sub alive and introduce a new model, the Yacht-Master, which had to be slightly different from a Sub of course, so as not to cannibalize it.

The distinction was simple: steel case water-resistant to 300m, black bezel, black dial and tool-ish characteristics for the Submariner. Gold case water-resistant to 100m, bright dial, solid gold bezel and luxurious characteristics (mainly due to more rounded shapes) for the Yacht-Master. For the rest, both watches were rather close: the same 3135 movement, the same dial layout, the same hands, the same 60-minute bezel (but here, bidirectional). It’s possible this close resemblance to the Submariner might be the reason why the Yacht-Master was so unpopular in comparison. This is why, over the years, it has evolved with different materials and more colours (two-tone Rolesor, blue dial, ladies’ and mid-size versions… things that the Submariner does not have).

The most famous version of the Rolex Yacht-Master was introduced in 1999, under the reference 16622: steel case, steel bracelet, solid platinum bezel and platinum-coated dial with a sparkling finish. At Baselworld 2012, the brand came with refreshed versions, including new blue accents on a silver model as well as a cobalt-blue dial option. Finally, a major evolution came in 2015, with the introduction of the Everose version , with black dial, black ceramic bezel insert and Oysterflex (rubber) bracelet – a new design that dramatically changed the perception of this watch.

While the standard size for the men’s version has always been 40mm, this year Rolex introduces a new version which grows and takes some of the nicest elements of the Everose version , but now in a larger white gold on rubber version. Let’s have a look at the new Rolex Yacht-Master 42.

The new, Baselworld 2019 Rolex Yacht-Master 42

After having launched several versions of the YM in 40mm, it was apparently time for Rolex to increase the size of its model, in order to differentiate it even more from the Submariner. Thus, the new Rolex Yacht-Master 42 ref. 226659 has gained 2mm in diameter to now 42mm overall – meaning one of the largest time-and-date watches in the collection.

For those of you who thought it would be rather more accessible, there’s a downside. This new reference is only available in white gold for the moment. Certainly, some evolutions will be seen in the coming years – steel, Everose, two-tone Rolesor – but for now, don’t count on a watch priced below EUR 10K.

The combination used on this Yacht-Master 42 ref. 226659 is rather new too. It features the typically raised track on the bezel, polished on a matte background, that is found on all Yacht-Master watches, but here rendered in black ceramic. The watch is also worn on a matte black Oysterflex (rubber) bracelet, giving this watch a nice, sporty yet elegant look.

The dial has true maxi indexes and hands but sticks to the proportions and style of the older references. Nothing new to note on this side. The entire dial – hands, indexes and inscriptions – is white, without a hint of color. Surprising too, but sleek looking.

As for the movement, Rolex integrates here the new generation of calibre, with the 3235 and its efficient gear train, Chronergy escapement and a longer power reserve of 70 hours. All in all, a solid package.

The Rolex Yacht-Master 42 ref. 226659 is worn on the truly superb rubber bracelet (not a strap, really a bracelet) named OysterFlex and featuring metal blades inside, as well as Rolex Glidelock extension system. 

This new 226659 is a rather unexpected yet a highly conservative watch on many points. We’ll take a closer look at it during Baselworld 2019. Price will CHF 26,500 .

The Yacht-Master’s bidirectional rotatable 60-minute graduated bezel is made entirely from precious metals or fitted with a Cerachrom insert in high-tech ceramic. The raised polished numerals and graduations stand out clearly against a matt, sand-blasted background.

This functional bezel – which allows the wearer to calculate, for example, the sailing time between two buoys – is also a key component in the model’s distinctive visual identity.

Vladivostok is a port city located in Russia (northeastern Asia), and on Golden Horn Bay (Sea of Japan). The city covers a total area of approx 331 km2 (128 mi2) and has population around 0,6 million.

The port city is the terminus of Russia's largest Pacific railway system (Trans-Siberian Railroad) and also the main naval base of Russia's Pacific fleet. The harbor is being kept open by icebreakers during winter months and serves as base for whaling and fishing vessels. Far Eastern State University is also here. The city is a major center of scientific research.

After the port city is named the 2015-built icebreaker Vladivostok .

The town was founded in 1860 as a military outpost and grew rapidly after 1903 when the Trans-Siberian railway was completed. During 1918-1922, Vladivostok was occupied by Japanese and Allied forces.

Port Vladivostok is ice-free the whole year-round. In 2002, the port had a foreign shipping trade turnover worth USD 275 million. In 2015, a special economic zone was established within the free port.

The city's main industries/employers are the Russian naval base, cargo shipping, commercial fishing. Fishing accounts for about 4/5 of the commercial production. A major source of revenue is the Japanese cars import.

In 2012, the city hosted the 24th Summit of APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) forum on Russky Island. In preparation for the event, the city's infrastructure was improved and two giant cable-stayed bridges were built - Zolotoy Rog Bridge (over Golden Horn Bay, city center) and Russky Bridge (connecting with Russky Island).

The 4-lane Russky Bridge (across Eastern Bosphorus strait) is the world's longest cable-stayed bridge ever constructed -(length 3,1 km / 10,200 ft). Its longest span is 1,1 km (3622 ft). The bridge's clearance above is 70 m (230 ft). The construction cost around USD 1,1 billion.

In August 2016, the Chinese ship Chinese Taishan (former Costa Voyager) made a maiden port call. Liner's operator (Bohai Cruises) soon announced the company's decision to include Vladivostok in its regularly scheduled roundtrip itineraries.

On July 31, 2017, the Peace Boat-chartered cruise ship Ocean Dream made a maiden port call in Vladivostok, with around 1200 tourists from Japan and South Korea. The voyage departed Port Kobe (Japan) on July 27th and visited Yeosu (Korea) , Vladivostok, Hakodate (Japan) , Sakaiminato-Matsue (Japan) and Busan (Korea) .

In 2017, cruise ships managed by Costa Asia ( Carnival Corporation 's subsidiary) visited Port Vladivostok 6 times. The first vessel ( Costa Victoria - max capacity 2314 passengers) docked here in May 2016. In 2017, the cruise port handled 13 ship calls. In 2016, their number was 6.

In 2018, the area near the cruise berth was dredged to allow docking of bigger vessels. On February 26 was opened port's season 2018 with Amadea ( Phoenix Reisen ) carrying over 500 passengers. Among 2018's highlights were the maiden calls by the large liners MSC Splendida (3900 pax), Costa Serena (3600 pax) and Costa Fortuna (3250 pax). On May 12, 2018, Costa Serena became the ever-largest cruise ship docking in Vladivostok. The liner carried over 3000 passengers and crew. It arrived from South Korea (roundtrip Busan itinerary) being chartered by Lotte Tours. Tourists were greeted with a live performance by Far Eastern State Technical Fisheries University students (drummers, singers, dancers). The seaport and Vladivostok tour operators arranged a total of 79 buses each with a Korean-speaking tour guide.

In 2019 (March through October) were booked for berthing a total of 16 ships, among which the RCI-Royal Caribbean 's Quantum and Spectrum . Other large-sized liners were Costa Serena (5 times), Costa neoRomantica (3 times), Diamond Princess , Holland America 's Maasdam and Westerdam , Ocean Dream .

Season 2019 started on March 20 with MS Albatros (Phoenix Reisen), with estimated nearly 30,000 cruise passengers (plus ~70,000 ferry passengers) to be handled at Vladivostok Sea Terminal. In 2019, Vladivostok also restarted its homeport operations with locals and tourists able to book cruises leaving from Vladivostok (mainly to ports in Korea and Japan) and fly-cruise deals (via air/sea programs). There are plans for establishing a local (Russian) cruise line to operate itineraries to other Russian Far East destinations.

On Sept 9, 2019, Spectrum OTS became the ever-largest passenger ship to visit a Russian Federation port. The vessel docked in Vladivostok and was boarded by 200+ Russian VIP guests. Next is listed the 8-day "Russia and Japan Cruise" itinerary roundtrip from China.

Via Vladivostok, the Russian cargo shipping company FESCO serves three express routes connecting Russia with South Korea, China and Japan - Busan to Moscow (15-days transit launched June 2018), Shanghai to Moscow (20-days transit launched January 2017) and Toyama to Moscow (15-days transit launched April 2018). The new services allow delivery time reduction achieved by implementing new pass-through technology (port-railway). Busan to Vladivostok transit time is 2 days.

In January 2021, FESCO for the first time exported containerized grain delivered from Khabarovsk. The TEU-containers were shipped to China's Qingdao and Chiwan ports. FESCO's Russia-China service is 2-week (transit time 14 days). FESCO started bulk shipping of gran (from Krasnoyarsk) to China in 2018 with the new Siberia-to-Far East (Kamchatka and Magadan) service via FESCO-owned trains.

In December 2021, FESCO acquired JSC Port Gaydamak (FEMSTA containership terminal) which was planned for modernization and expansion in 2024. The facility is used mainly for transshipment (400,000+ tons of grain annually) and general cargoes. Also in December was inaugurated the "FESCO West Gate Bridge" (2-4-times a month intermodal containership service on the route Vladivostok- Kaliningrad/Baltiysk ) linking the Asia-Pacific countries with Europe. With an estimated transit time of 36 days, the Vladivostok-Kaliningrad service is nearly 1,5 times faster than the Suez Canal alternative.

Vladivostok cruise terminal

Cruise ships dock at Vladivostok Sea Terminal where their passengers are welcomed with a ceremony that includes live performances of traditional Russian dances, folklore songs and drummers. The event is organized by the company Vladivostok Sea Terminal, LLC.

To all passengers are given free city maps and tour guides, provided by Primorsky Region's Tourist Information Center. Traditionally, an outdoor market with Russian souvenirs is also organized for the disembarking tourists.
