“Below Deck” — The Netflix Binge Cruisers Will Love

Netflix is known for introducing binge-worthy content to the platform.

And the latest has to be “Below Deck” — a reality series that came to Netflix in the form of two seasons in August 2020.

But the show itself was filmed way back in 2013 and has a total of 7 seasons and 105 episodes.

So why are people raving about the show? 

It’s a glimpse into a luxury escape — and the drama onboard

Below Deck follows the lives of crew members who live and work onboard a mega-yacht.

Season one follows the likes of Captain Lee Rosback, First Officer Aleks Taldykin, Chief Stewardess Adriene Gang, Second Engineer C.J. LeBeau, Chef Ben Robinson and Deckhand David Bradberry in their everyday working and personal lives onboard the 164-foot Honor .

The first release of the series averaged 1.4 million total viewers per episode.

All of the crew that is hired to be part of the show are licensed and certified, which involves a two-week course.

Captain Lee says: “ Each of the crew members has to have an STCW, which is a standard set by the maritime industry for watch-keeping and just being on board—it’s basic first aid, firefighting. It’s a two-week course and a certification they have to have before they’re allowed to work on yachts.”

The crew is filmed 24 hours a day , seven days a week working on the boat while being filmed by both hidden cameras and a crew. 

But what makes the show so addictive? 

For reality TV lovers, Below Deck is one of those shows with a brand that is instantly bingeable. This is because of the on-screen romances, drama, and professional and personal turmoils that are captured on screen.

Noah Samton, the senior vice president of the production for Bravo says that the yachting industry “attracts the kind of people that are good for TV. First of all, they’re a lot of young, attractive people. A lot of people that are sort of escaping their lives for some reason or have this adventurous streak in them. We’re really good at finding the people who are going to wear it on their sleeves.” 

And as with other reality TV shows, the cameras capture it all, sharing every aspect of their lives onboard.

The only place that they aren’t filmed is in the bathroom, but only one crew member can be in one at any given time.

Members have tried to get away with their personal antics being held in places without a camera — in one instance, a laundry room — but the crew quickly clocks on.

It’s this close look into their lives, combined with the personalities and the exotic locations, that make Below Deck so exciting to watch.

How is the show really filmed? Here are some of the secrets

When the show was first released there were some questions from fans about how ‘real’ the working lives were of those on screen. But the cast actually work as real-life stewards, sometimes up to 16+ hours a day, and sleep on tiny bunks.

T he charter company actually pays each cast member a base salary; the cast is also paid an appearance fee by the production company. And they’re allowed to take tips by guests. All their food is provided by the boat’s chef, as would be in the case if they were regular employees. 

The cast is not allowed to speak to, or interact with, the production team and cameraman in order to keep in line with the show’s guidelines. 

Captain Lee is actually in charge of the boat, including when and where they can sail and anything that needs to be considered in terms of the weather. He can also fire anyone at any time. Production is not allowed to have any influence on this.

The boat costs upwards of $300,000 per week to hire — which is why all filming is done during the six-week period. 

All cast members get three days off per season during the six weeks of filming on the boat. They can stay in a hotel room on those days, but they’re not allowed to communicate with each other. 

There are also advantages for the guests on the boat, as they are given a fifty percent discount on their journey — although they pay their own money to rent the boat and for their tips.

What’s the future for Below Deck?

So far, Netflix has releases only two series of the show, but we can expect more. For the ones that can’t get the show’s pristine sceneries out of their mind, sites like borrowaboat.com have boats and yachts for every taste available to rent, perfect to recreate the sailing lifestyle.

While there are only two series so far released by Netflix, we can expect more. And the new Below Deck season eight will likely premiere sometime in the fall of 2020.

With eight seasons now, it’s likely that there could be more in the future and that audiences will be able to continue to enjoy the drama-filled lives of those who work below deck and onboard the ship.

The firm that built tech billionaire Mike Lynch’s superyacht Bayesian that sank off the coast of Sicily say “human error” is to blame.

On Thursday, the head of Italian Sea Group, Giovanni Cotantino, said the tragedy could have been avoided after the $58 million ship capsized in a water spout on Monday morning.

“Everything that was done reveals a very long summation of errors,” Mr Costantino said.

The company, which includes the Perini Navi company, built the luxury 56-metre yacht in 2008.

Mr Costantino told Italy’s Corriere della Sera newspaper that bad weather was forecast and all the passengers should have been gathered at a pre-arranged assembly point, with all the doors and hatches closed.

Security camera footage of the ship from the shore showed the lights on its mast going out, which Mr Costantino said indicated a short circuit, meaning that the ship had already taken on water, AFP reported.

“A Perini ship resisted Hurricane Katrina, a category 5 (hurricane). Does it seem to you that it can’t resist a tornado from here?” he told the publication.

Mr Costantino said it was “good practice when the ship is at anchor to have a guard on the bridge, and if there was one he could not have failed to see the storm coming”.

“Instead it took on water with the guests still in the cabin. They ended up in a trap, those poor people ended up like mice in a trap,” he said.

He also told The Sun modern sailing ships, especially high-tech ones like the Perini, are designed to be extremely safe and stable.

“Even in very critical conditions, if procedures are followed, a sailing yacht like the Bayesian will return to an upright position,” he said.

“However, if the ship takes on water, this stability is compromised.

“Where the water entered will be determined by the investigators.

“What is certain is that the ship took on hundreds of thousands of litres of water.”

He also disputed widely reported claims that the ship sank in just 60 seconds - instead saying logs show it took 16 minutes to go down.

“The torture lasted 16 minutes. It went down, not in one minute as some scientists have said,” he told The Financial Times .

“It went down in 16 minutes. You can see it from the charts, from the AIS [Automatic Identification System] tracking chart.

“The captain should have prepared the boat and put it in a state of alert and of safety, just like the boat [the Sir Robert Baden Powell] anchored 350 metres away, which was built in 1957 and handled the [weather] event brilliantly.”

He claimed the Bayesian was “one of the safest boats in the world” and was virtually “unsinkable”, telling Italian publication Corriere della Sera : “The passengers reported something absurd, that the storm came unexpectedly, suddenly. That is not true. Everything was predictable.”

Prosecutors in the town of Termini Imerese, close to Porticello, where the vessel went down, have opened an investigation into the disaster. They will seek to establish what caused the yacht to sink and whether any of the crew are criminally liable.

The body of billionaire tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch is among the five bodies divers recovered on Wednesday.

The 59-year-old was said to be trapped by two mattresses inside a cabin on the superyacht, according to Italian publication La Repubblica.

Italian officials said on Wednesday that they believed his 18-year-old daughter Hannah to be among those recovered, but she is now thought to still be inside the boat.

Fifteen people have been rescued, including Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares, a mother with her one-year-old baby , and New Zealand captain James Cutfield who is recovering in hospital.

Captain questioned

Prosecutors, who have been interviewing survivors from the tragedy, questioned Mr Cutfield for several hours about the disaster, Giornale Di Sicilia reported.

The 51-year-old, who managed to escape from the vessel, told Italian media, “We just didn’t see it coming” , when speaking of the abrupt nature of the water spout.

There is no suggestion of any wrongdoing by Mr Cutfield.

Mr Cutfield’s brother Mark told the NZ Herald his brother was a “very good sailor” and was “very well respected”.

He said he is currently in hospital but was not suffering from injuries “too dramatic”.

“He’s safe, he’s okay,” Mark said.

Mr Cutfield’s wife had flown from their home in Palma, Mallorca, to be by his side in Italy and has been updating his family back home in New Zealand.

According to the NZ Herald , he had been a captain on luxury yachts for eight years and had previously been working on them and involved in building them for the past 30 years in various locations around the Mediterranean.

The publication reported that before Mr Cutfield worked for the British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, he had worked for a Turkish billionaire.

Mr Cutfield’s interrogation comes after divers found that the keel, a crucial part of the boat’s structure which helps keep it balanced, had been raised when the yacht was anchored off shore.

The keel operates as the main structural backbone of the yacht, filled with heavy materials, keeping it balanced and helping it to correct in stormy waters.

Dan Green, Research & Investigations lead at eSysman SuperYachts, told The Mirror that if the keel was raised it would harm the boat’s stability and could explain why it sank so quickly.

“The keel when lowered increases the stability of the vessel,” he said.

“When raised, this reduces stability as the centre of gravity is raised, as the keel is also weighted with lead.

“Another effect of the keel being in the up position is the vessel will not self-right if it leans far over.

“If you add to that the possibility of hatches being opened on the vessel that would explain why it’s saying [sinking] so quickly.”

The UK’s marine accident investigation branch also sent four inspectors.

Matthew Schanck, from the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, told AFP what happened was “pretty unprecedented” after the yacht was struck by a “black swan” waterspout during a storm.

UK meteorologist Peter Inness described a waterspout as a “narrow column of rotating air below a thunderstorm that occurs over water”.

Like tornadoes, they suck up air in a rotating motion. Many are fairly inconsequential, but some can pack winds of more than 100km per hour, Mr Inness said.

Jean-Marie Dumon, a former naval officer now with the GICAN, the French maritime industry association, added that conditions with winds of 100kph or more can “create completely anarchic sea conditions which can cause capsizing”.

Now, Bledsoe, who joined “Good Morning Football” on Wednesday , took a shot at Brady’s voice before he joins Fox’s No. 1 NFL broadcast team this year.

“I know that Tommy will work it to death,” Bledsoe said. “I will get kind of tired of his squeaky ass voice. … But I know he’ll do a great job calling the games.”

The jab was said in jest, and Bledsoe added that he believes Brady will do well working alongside Kevin Burkhardt.

Though it was quite the quip, it felt tame in comparison to the joke he directed toward Brady at the roast.

“Hey look, buddy, you have more rings than I do, but I’ve experienced a couple of things that you will never experience: the feeling of being the No. 1 overall draft pick in the NFL, and a 28th wedding anniversary. It was yesterday,” Bledsoe said to Brady.

Bledsoe was asked by the “GMFB” crew about his time roasting Brady, and the former 14-year NFL QB said he wasn’t “too nervous about” getting on stage in front of people cracking jokes.

“That was probably the most prepared I’ve been publicly just because I had to run through it with my wife and kids because they were so nervous,” he said. “My kids each individually called me and said, ‘Alright, dad, what are you going to say?’ because they were so nervous. ‘All I hear from you are bad dad jokes and super inappropriate stuff at inappropriate times.”

He did, however, say, his wife did “veto” one joke that he won’t share with he general public.

Now, Bledsoe — and NFL fans — will have to wait just a few weeks to hear if Brady’s voice does indeed get tiresome on broadcasts.

This could be interpreted in two ways. Firstly, if Scott Peterson planned on going fishing in the area, his looking up the bay tides would make sense. The biggest flaw in this argument is the fact that he didn’t own the boat yet, and he said the decision to go fishing occurred the morning he went out.

Secondly, Scott searching for the tides would make sense if he decided to kill Laci. By looking at the tides, he could figure out the best place to dump her body so that it hopefully wouldn’t wash up on shore. This possibility is further bolstered by the fact that Laci’s and Conner’s bodies were found in the same area where he went fishing. The documentary argues it would be extremely unlikely for him to look up the tides and go fishing in the same place that a completely different person would choose to dump the body. That relies on far too big of a coincidence.

Scott Peterson Told Amber Frey That His Wife Was Dead

American Murder: Laci Peterson outlines Scott Peterson’s relationship with his girlfriend that increased suspicion about his involvement in Laci’s death. When Scott Peterson was caught cheating by a friend, his buddy said he would tell Amber Frey about Laci if Scott didn’t. Rather than telling Amber that he was separated or divorced, Scott told his girlfriend that he had lost his wife, saying it would be the first holiday season without his wife. This occurred only two weeks before Laci went missing and the same day he bought the boat.

While cheating and lying don’t make someone a killer, the way he went about it seems extremely suspicious according to the documentary. The true-crime doc acknowledges that chances of someone coincidentally saying their spouse is dead two weeks before she gets murdered are low. Like with many other aspects of the case, this fact alone would not be enough to say Scott Peterson is guilty of killing his wife, but these pieces of information started to pile up.

Scott Peterson Did Multiple Things Between Getting Home And Calling Lacis Mom

Scott peterson didn't have a sense of urgency.

When Scott Peterson got home from the marina, he found the door unlocked, Mackenzie on her leash, and Laci gone. He called out for Laci and got no response. Despite his missing wife, he did many other things before calling his mother-in-law to see if Laci was at her house. Detective Brocchini says in American Murder: Laci Peters that Scott washed his clothes from the fishing trip, ate a piece of pizza, drank some milk, and took a shower .

Only then did he call Sharon Rocha and say that if Laci wasn’t at her house, then she was missing – a phrasing that Sharon says she found odd when speaking in the American Murder: Laci Peterson docuseries. Considering his wife was approximately 9 months pregnant and could go into labor at any time, Scott’s actions seem especially strange. There would have been plenty of reasons to react immediately to Laci being gone. Moreover, the fact that he didn’t bother to try calling Laci’s phone before calling Laci’s mom seemed peculiar if he didn’t already know Laci was dead.

The Burglars Of The Medina House Cooperated With Police

Steven todd and donald pearce burglarized the medina home.

One of the most surprising facts discussed in American Murder: Laci Peterson is the fact that Steven Todd and Donald Pearce, the burglars who broke into the Medina House across the street from the Peterson home, cooperated with the police as soon as they found out they were suspects in the Laci Peterson case. The two provided their alibis for the 24th, which the police verified. They confessed to the burglary and turned over all the stolen property.

The pair described the media presence down the street when confessing, indicating that the burglary happened after Laci went missing. The two even asked to take a polygraph and passed. While the polygraph results aren’t indicative of anything , the fact that they volunteered to do so could be interpreted as a sign of innocence. Most importantly, none of the evidence from the burglary had any connection to Laci. Consequently, the police cleared them of any involvement in the Laci Peterson murder case.

Scott Petersons Boat Had Pliers With Lacis Hair In Them

One of the few pieces of physical evidence in the Scott Peterson case is a pair of pliers from his boat with two strands of Laci’s hair in it. An FBI trace evidence expert testified that the hairs were consistent with those of Laci Peterson, and mitochondrial DNA confirmed this, too (via CBS News ). This might not be notable except for the fact that Scott hadn’t been on the boat before the day Laci went missing, and she didn’t go on the trip with him , raising questions about how the hair got into the pliers.

Whether Laci knew about the boat is a major source of debate. According to Scott Peterson’s Appeal website , he told the police that Laci knew about the website, though many things on the website are questionable. On the other hand, the prosecution said that none of Scott’s family or friends knew about the boat, including Laci. Ultimately, the documentary acknowledges there’s no way to verify whether Laci knew about the boat or not, but if she didn’t, her hair shouldn’t have been in pliers on the boat.

Amber Frey Met With Lacis Friends And Mom

While most of the moments in American Murder: Laci Peterson are devastating, the second episode offers a bittersweet moment when Amber’s friends reveal that they thanked Amber for coming forward. Despite Amber Frey not knowing Scott Peterson was married, it would have been easy for Laci’s friends and family to demonize her. After all, they were hurt by Scott Peterson’s extramarital affair. Instead, they recognized that she had come forward despite it putting her in a terrible position , which they appreciated.

Additionally, Laci’s mom asked to meet with Amber Frey. Together, they filled in a calendar of time that Scott Peterson spent with Amber so that Sharon knew the extent of his lies. Amber mentioned in the Netflix documentary that Scott had deeply fooled Laci’s family. This realization must have been difficult because he did the same thing to her, just in a slightly different way.

The District Attorney Wouldnt File Murder Charges Without A Body

The da needed a body to prove laci peterson was dead.

A detail shared in American Murder: Laci Peterson is the fact that the investigators wanted to arrest Scott Peterson sooner than they did. At the time, Laci’s and Conner’s bodies hadn’t washed up yet, but everyone was certain they were dead. The circumstantial evidence found was enough to convince the detectives that Scott killed Laci. However, the District Attorney refused to file murder charges against Scott until they had a body proving that she was dead.

The detectives were eventually able to move forward in the case, though, because Laci and Conners bodies were found.

This detail about the Scott Peterson criminal case might not have been widely known prior to the Netflix documentary. However, it won’t come as too much of a surprise to fans of true crime. No body cases are famously challenging to take to court because the threshold for evidence is much higher. The detectives were eventually able to move forward in the case, though, because Laci and Conner’s bodies were found. Had their bodies remained in the water, Scott Peterson likely wouldn’t have ever been tried for the murders of Laci and Conner, let alone gone to prison for his crime.

Scott Peterson Kept Calling Amber Frey Even After Her Press Conference

More phone calls exist than most people know.

Most people familiar with the Scott Peterson case know of big phone recordings with Amber Frey – Scott saying he was at the Eiffel Tower for New Year and confessing that his wife was missing, which occurred on December 31, 2002, and January 6, 2003, respectively. On January 23, 2003, Amber made a press release where she confirmed that she was in a relationship with Scott Peterson and was previously unaware he was married. However, American Murder: Laci Peterson revealed that the phone calls didn’t stop after their affair became public knowledge.

Scott continued calling Amber Frey, and she kept taking them because she wanted to find out more information for the police. Sadly, Scott said nothing to implicate himself in the phone calls, making them useless to the prosecutors. On February 19, 2003, Amber Frey told Scott Peterson that she wanted to end their phone calls – an audio clip played in American Murder: Laci Peterson episode 2.

Articles Superyacht AQUARIUS set to steal the show in all-new Netflix sequel

Often stealing the show with their majesty and class, from James Bond to the Wolf of Wall Street, some of Hollywood’s most iconic screenplays have featured stunning yachts. AQUARIUS, a very special yacht in our charter fleet - is certainly no different.

Built by prestigious Turkish shipyard Mengi Yay in 2016, and available for charter with Ocean Independence, 46m (151′) AQUARIUS is making a splash appearing in the all-new blockbuster sequel – Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. Set to be released on Netflix on the 23rd of December, the distinguished cast coupled with this luxury Knives Out yacht make for a gripping combination.

Seen in the opening pictures, AQUARIUS cruises through the beautiful blue waters of Greece, but inside she harbours a table full of mysterious suspects. Each uniquely dressed and fervently awaiting the arrival of one man. Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) enters, and with the gentleman detective now on board, the business of solving a mysterious murder ensues.

While the star-studded line-up includes Daniel Craig, Edward Norton, Janelle Monae, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson, and Dave Bautista to name just a few. For us, AQUARIUS is in a class of her own. With her contemporary styling, striking vertical bow, and extravagant interior, she serves as the perfect backdrop for this glamorous murder mystery. And, if that wasn’t exciting enough, Captain Andino is played by AQUARIUS’ real life Captain Ali Göksoy. While unable to reveal any secrets about the movie, he told us:

“We had an amazing time shooting the film in Greece with Rian Johnson and the rest of the cast. They were extremely professional and made my first acting experience a great pleasure. I learnt a lot about just how much goes into filming these incredible movies and gained a new level of respect for the acting world.” Captain Ali Göksoy

Rian Johnson is the director behind this fresh whodunit thriller where – at the invitation of tech billionaire Miles Bron – Detective Blanc arrives at a luxurious private estate on a remote Greek island to investigate a mysterious death. There he meets an eclectic mix of people including former business partner Andi Brand, cutting-edge scientist Lionel Toussaint, fashion designer Birdie Jay with her conscientious assistant Peg, plus influencer Duke Cody and his sidekick girlfriend Whiskey.

But why are they all there and who can be trusted? Only Detective Blanc has what it takes to unravel these questions – but can he do so before anyone else comes to harm? All will be revealed when Glass Onion: a Knives Out Mystery launches on Netflix this December.

‘Mediterranean Queen’ aka superyacht Sarastar is the luxury yacht featuring in the new Netflix film ‘Murder Mystery’ which has been filmed on location in the South of France and Italy .

Alongside Hollywood heavyweights Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston, the 60m/197ft charter yacht SARASTAR is making her screen debut in Netflix’s new comedy film  Murder Mystery .

Due to be released in summer 2019, the modern twist on the classic whodunit follows a couple from New York (Sandler and Aniston) who decide to spice up their marriage with a vacation to Europe.

A chance encounter on a plane with a fellow passenger (Luke Evans) gets them invited on board a yacht; but things take an unfortunate turn when the pair become the prime suspects in the grisly murder of the yacht’s owner (Terence Stamp).

Set around the idyllic coastlines of the Mediterranean , the film features plenty of breathtaking visuals of popular yacht charter destinations. Among them are the superyacht hub of Monaco and the picture-perfect Italian harbour town of Portofino .

The film also treats views to a glimpse inside Sarastar, the 2017-built charter yacht from Mondomarine . The motor yacht is perfect to play the role in this quirky film, as she is a highly unique charter platform with eye-catching exteriors and dramatic interiors from Luca Dini.

A sensory fusion of colours and textures have been used on board SARASTAR, with an abundance of white onyx, backlit granite, animal skins and velvet surfaces. The entryway to her main salon is clad in pear-green marble, while the owner’s suite enjoys a side-opening balcony and walls coated in plush fabric.

Viewers can enjoy a custom-made bronze light fixture which draws the eye above the dining table, as well as a closer look at her large sundeck, which is replete with stainless steel chairs that resemble thrones. The sundeck is home with a variety of lounging options, an innovative gym area amidships and a bar area forward for all-day refreshment.

Other amenities include a spread of foredeck sundpads which overlook the Helipad, a space which can also serve as a dancefloor. The luxury yacht also benefits from an extending swim platform and generous beach club, which is drenched in natural light during the day, thanks to glass panels in the sundeck that allow plenty of light to flood in.

Maria Bello has joined the upcoming Netflix drama series “The Waterfront,” Variety has learned.

The eight-episode show, which hails from Kevin Williamson, was originally greenlit at Netflix back in May . Bello is now the second confirmed cast member, joining Holt McCallany in the series.

This will Bello’s second TV outing with Netflix. She previously appeared in the hit series “Beef” for the streamer, earning herself an Emmy nomination in the process. She has also starred in shows like “NCIS” and “Goliath.” She is primarily known for her film roles, starring in features such as “A History of Violence,” “The Cooler,” “Thank You for Smoking,” “Prisoners,” and “Coyote Ugly.”

She is repped by Independent Artist Group and Agence Adequat.

Williamson is the writer of “The Waterfront,” with both he and Ben Fast executive producing under their Outerbanks Entertainment banner. Universal Television is the studio, with Outerbanks currently under an overall deal at UTV.
