1. Bunte Gassen der Altstadt (Vieille Ville)

Die bunten Häuser in den schmalen Altstadtgassen verbinden Museen, Restaurants und kleine Boutiquen miteinander.

Vieille Villa ist die schöne Altstadt von Nizza.

Hier gibt es enge Pflasterstraßen, pastellfarbene Häuser mit Läden, Restaurants, Sehenswürdigkeiten wie die Kathedrale von Nizza, das Musée du Palais Lascaris und Märkte. Die Läden verkaufen Seife aus Nizza, Textilien aus der Provence, Wein und Käse aus der Region.

2. Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild

Die Villa am Cap Ferrat ist eine der schönsten Erinnerung an die Belle Époque.

Die auch als Île-de-France bekannte Villa im italienischen Renaissance-Stil am Cap Ferrat wurde für die Baronesse Béatrice de Rothschild gebaut.

Die Baroness vermachte die Villa der Académie des Beaux-Arts, die sie 1937 für die Öffentlichkeit zugänglich machte. 

Heute ist die Villa ein Museum, dass an die Liebe ihrer ersten Besitzerin an die Kunst der Belle Époque erinnert. Zur Ausstellung gehört die echte Einrichtung mit der Kunstsammlung der Baroness.

Der prachtvolle Park der Villa macht dem prunkvollen Interior Konkurrenz, eine spezielle Empfehlung ist der Garten im französischen Landschaftsstil.

Der Kieselstrand an der Promenade des Anglais in der Altstadt ist heute der wichtigste Strand in Nizza mit Beach Clubs, freien Strandflächen und der Promenade für einen Spaziergang.

Ich empfehle dir einen der Beach Clubs mit Strandliegen, guten Essen und einen schönen Blick auf die Côte d’Azur. Du kannst auch Erlebnisse wie Parasiling am Strand reservieren.

4. Bergdorf Èze

Das mittelalterliche Künstlerdorf Èze ist ein Ziel für einen Nachmittag mit Essen, kleinen Boutiquen und gutem französischen Essen.

Èze ist eine kleine Gemeinde zwischen Nizza und dem Fürstenturm Monaco.

Sie lebt von ihrem süßen Aussehen und ihrem Ruf als Künstlerdorf. Zum Beispiel lebte Walt Disney lange in Èze, Friedrich Nietzsche hat im Bergdorf einen Teil seines Werks "Also sprach Zarathustra" geschrieben.

Die wichtigste Sehenswürdigkeit in Èze ist heute das 430 m über dem Meer gelegene mittelalterliche Zentrum Èze Village mit seinen schmalen autofreien Gassen, Boutiquen mit Waren im Bohemian Style, kleinen Bistros und einem atemberaubenden Ausblick auf das Meer. 

Auf der Spitze von Èze Village befindet sich der Sukulentengarten Jardin botanique d'Èze.

Das Bergdorf ist auch ein guter Ort zur Suche nach einem Souvenir, es gibt Zweigstellen der Parfumfabriken Grasse, Fragonad und Gallimard. Zumindest eine davon gehören zum Programm der möglichen Tagesausflüge aus Nizza nach Èze, die meist noch das Fürstenturm Monaco im Programm haben.

5. Essen aus Nizza

Socca ist das einfache Regionalgericht von Nizza.

Die Französische Küche gehört zu den Top 10 Sehenswürdigkeiten in Frankreich .

Nizza hat seine eigenen Regionalgerichte, die du während einer Reise einmal ausprobieren solltest. 

Hier habe ich die interessantesten Gerichte schnell zusammengefasst:

• Salade Niçoise:  Ein Salat mit gekochten Eiern, Oliven, Basilikum, Thunfisch und Sardellen.
• Pissaladière: Eine Art Kuchen mit karamelisierten Zwiebeln, Anchovies und den kleinen Oliven aus Nizza.
• Socca: Das Regionalgericht von Nizza ist ein Pfannkuchen aus Kichererbsenmehl.
• Daube Nicoise: Ragout nach der Art von Nizza mit Rindfleisch, Sellerie, Zwiebeln, Rotwein und Karotten.
• Le Pan Bagnat: Salat Niçoise in einem Sandwich als schnelles Essen für zwischendurch.

6. Marché Aux Fleurs Cours Saleya (Markt)

Spaziere durch den Blunenmarkt am Tag, iss Streetfood und gehe am Abend zum Essen in ein Restaurant am Markt in der Altstadt von Nizza.

Der nur wenige Schritte vom Meer entfernte Markt ist einer der Anziehungspunkte in der Altstadt von Nizza.

Früher war der Cours Saleya ein Park, heute ist er eine Fußgängerzone mit dem Markt am Tag, Restaurants, Essen und Bars am Abend. 

Zwischen den ockerfarbenen Barockfassaden bieten Händler am Montag Antiquitätenmarkt an und an anderen Tagen Blumen- und Gemüse.

An den Sommerabenden gibt es einen Kunst- und Kunsthandwerkermarkt auf dem Cours Saleya.

7. Strände der Côte d’Azur

Azurblaues Meer, weiße Sonnenliegen und warme Sonne: Nizza ist ein wunderbares Ziel für ein paar Tage am Meer.

Der Kieselstrand an der Promenade des Anglais ist das Aushängeschild von Nizza. Er nimmt die gesamte kilometerlange Küste von Nizza von der Altstadt bis zum Flughafen ein.

Entlang dem Strand gibt es alle paar Hundert Meter Beach Clubs mit Sonnenliegen, Sonnenschirmen und gutem Essen. Der bekannteste, älteste und am zentralsten gelegene Strandclub ist der Opera Plage Beach Club , mit leider etwas gemischten Bewertungen.

Dazwischen sind freie Strandbereiche zum in der Sonne liegen auf einem eigenen Handtuch.

Daneben gibt es noch eine Reihe von anderen schönen Stränden in den Nachbarorten von Nizza.

Hier ist eine schnelle Liste mit anderen nahen Orten zum in der Sonne liegen außerhalb von Nizza Stadt:

• Plage Villefranche-sur-Mer:   Der öffentliche Strand im Nachbarort ist ein ruhigerer Ort zum Schwimmen im Vergleich zum Zentrum von Nizza. Es gibt hier keine Beach Clubs. Du musst ein Handtuch zum Liegen mitnehmen.
• Plage des Fourmis: Der kleine Sandstrand am Cap Ferrat ist von der Marina Fourmis, der Villa Kilyos und dem Hotel Royal Riviera eingerahmt. Es gibt dort keinen Beach Club. Vor der Küste liegen meist Superjachten vor Anker. 
• Plage du Cros:   Der Strand im Westen des Flughafens von Nizza ist unter Einheimischen beliebt. Hier gibt es ebenso Beach Clubs wie freie Strandbereiche entlang dem kilometerlangen Kieselstrand.
• Paloma Beach : Einer der schönsten Beach Clubs nahe Nizza am Cap Ferrat mit einem mediterranen Restaurant.

8. Ein Tag in Monaco und Monte Carlo

High-Society, Milliardäre und Yachten: Monaco ist das beliebteste Ziel für einen Tagesausflug aus Nizza.

Ein Tag im Fürstentum Monaco ist ein Erlebnis, das fest zu einer Reise nach Nizza dazugehört.

Zu den Sehenswürdigkeiten im Fürstentum zählen der Yachthafen mit dem Glamour der High Society, der Monte Carlo mit Erinnerungen an das jährliche Formel-1-Rennen, das Casino Monte Carlo, Café de Paris und natürlich der Palast der Fürstenfamilie Grimaldi. 

Du erreichst Monaco aus Nizza in 20 bis 40 Minuten vom Gare de Nice-Ville mit dem Zug. Das Ticket kostet rund 5 € pro Person. Den Fahrplan findest du auf sncf-connect.com . Du gehst vom Bahnhof rund 15 Minuten bis zum Platz mit dem Casino.

Die Alternative ist ein Tagesausflug nach Monaco mit Monte Carlo, dem Platz vor dem Casino und dem Yachthafen. Meistens besuchst du am Weg noch zusätzlich das Bergdorf Èze.

9. Musée Masséna

Das Musée Masséna zeigt Kunst aus der Belle Époque. Darunter ist das handgeschriebene Buch Côte d’Azur von Stéphen Liégeard.

Das Museum neben der Promenade des Anglais und dem Hotel Negresco zeigt Kunst aus der Belle Époque und die Kunst- und Regionalgeschichte der Côte d’Azur.

Im Museum ist das handgeschriebene Buch Côte d’Azur von Stéphen Liégeard ausgestellt, die der Küste ihren heutigen Namen gegeben hat. Dazu kommen auf zwei Etagen Werke der Malerei, Skulptur, Kunstgewerbe, Schmuck und Mobiliar der Belle Époque.

Zu den besonderen Stücken abseits der Belle Époque gehört die Totenmaske von Napoleon Bonaparte, hergestellt von dem Chirurgen Docteur Arnold.

10. Ausblick vom Parc de la Colline du Château

Ausblick vom Parc de la Colline du Chateau: Im Osten auf den Hafen, im Westen auf die Promenade des Anglais.

Der alte Burgberg von Nizza, heute Colline du Château, ist der Hügel zwischen der Promenade des Anglais, der Altstadt und dem Port Lympia.

Er ist der romantischste und gleichzeitig bekannteste Aussichtspunkt auf Nizza. Vom schon erwähnten Bellanda Tower oder dem Point de vue Colline du chateau hast du den besten Blick auf Nizzas Wahrzeichen, die Promenade des Anglais.

Zusätzlich siehst du im Park eine archäologische Ausgrabungsstätte mit den Ruinen der Sainte-Marie Kathedrale.

Von der Ostseite des Parks hast du einen großartigen Ausblick auf den Port de Nice und kannst am Weg zurück in den östlichen Teil der Altstadt am Hafen den Friedhof Cimetière du Château mit seinen prunkvollen Gräbern besuchen. 

11. Verdon Schlucht und Lavendelfelder der Provence

Die Lavendelfelder sind eines der am öftesten fotografierten Motive aus Frankreich. Der Grand Canyon von Frankreich kommt gleich danach. 

Der "Grand Canyon" von Europa, die bis zu 700 m tiefe Verdon Schlucht, kannst du zusammen mit den violetten Lavendelfeldern der Provence mit einem Tagesausflug aus Nizza sehen. 

Bei den typischen Touren siehst du das Landesinnere von Nizza, zusammen mit einigen der schönsten Natursehenswürdigkeiten von Frankreich.

Dabei fährst du durch meistens durch die schöne Landschaft von Frankreich , besuchst die Verdon Schlucht, einen 40 m hohen Wasserfall, das kleine mittelalterliche Dorf Moustiers-Sainte-Marie und spazierst durch die Lavendelfelder.

Anreise zur Verdon Schlucht: Es gibt keine gute Verbindung mit dem öffentlichen Verkehr zur Schlucht, zu den Lavendelfeldern und zu den kleinen Dörfern entlang der Route.

Am einfachsten ist die Fahrt mit einem Mietwagen zur Verdon Schlucht aus Nizza. Ein Mietwagen kostet rund 100 € am Tag, macht Reisen aber individueller möglich. Ein guter Preisvergleich ist Check24.net . Sie haben auch die lokalen Anbieter in Nizza im Vergleich.

12. Ruinen von Cimiez

Cimiez war die Hauptstadt der römischen Provinz Alpes. Heute erinnern daran die Ruinen der Arenen, Thermen und das Archäologische Museum. 

Cimiez ist einer von sechs Ortsteilen von Nizza, gelegen auf einem Hügel oberhalb der Stadt. Die Region ist heute eine exklusive Wohngegend mit Kunstausstellungen, Museen und Parks.

Seine Geschichte geht auf den römischen Kaiser Augustus zurück, der das damalige Cimiez mit dem Namen Cemenelum zum Hauptort der Provinz Alpes machte.

Heute erinnern daran die Ruinen der Arenen, der Thermen und das Archäologische Museum von Nizza und Cimiez. Zum Museum gehören die Ruinen der antiken Stadt und Funde aus Cimiez, Nizza und dem nahen Badeort Golfe-Juan.

13. Orthodoxe Kathedrale von Nizza

Die Orthodoxe Kathedrale geht auf einen Besuch von Zar Alexander II zurück.

Die Kathedrale Saint-Nicolas ist die größte russisch-orthodoxe Kirche außerhalb von Russland.

Sie ist einer der am öftesten fotografierten Bauten in Nizza und zählt zu den Top 10 Sehenswürdigkeiten der Stadt. Dabei geht es vor allem um die altrussische Architektur der 1912 erbauten orthodoxen Kathedrale, die sich so klar von den restlichen Bauten in Nizza unterscheidet.

Ihr Bau geht auf einen Besuch von Zar Alexander II 1864 nach dem Vorbild der britischen High Society an der Côte d’Azur zurück. Sie wurde am Ort errichtet, an dem der bereits schwer kranke Zarensohn Nikolai Romanow verstorben ist.

Der Eintritt zum Areal der Kathedrale am Boulevard du Tsarévitch ist kostenlos.

14. Segeltörn an der Côte d’Azur

Zwischen einem eigenen Segelschiff, VIP-Charter und einem Segeltörn entlang der Küste ist in Nizza alles möglich.

Zwischen einem Tag in Monaco, einer privaten Yacht und einer Bummelfahrt entlang der Côte d’Azur ist fast alles möglich.

15. Kloster Monastère de Cimiez

Der Plan des Klosters nahe den Arenen von Cimiez soll seit 1546 unverändert sein.

Der Duft der Blumen erfüllt noch immer den ehemalige Gemüse- und Obstgarten der Mönche mit seinem zentralen Brunnen, alten Pergolen und Kletterrosen. Bis hinunter zum Port de Nice, auf die Altstadt und das Meer reicht der Ausblick aus dem ruhigen Garten.

Die bekannteste Sehenswürdigkeit im Inneren des Franziskaners mit Grundmauern aus dem sind Gewölbefresken und eine Gemäldeserie von Ludovico Brea.

Du kannst den Park der Kirche und das Kloster gut mit einem Besuch der Arenen von Chimiez, dem Archäologischen Museum und dem Musée Matisse verbinden.

16. Villefranche-sur-Mer

Villefranche-sur-Mer ist das ruhige Nizza mit schmalen Gassen, Restaurants, einem Strand, der Marina und dem azurblauen Meer.

Die farbenfrohe Altstadt, der romantische Hafen und die Restaurants von Villefranche-sur-Mer gehören zu unseren Lieblingsorten außerhalb des Zentrums von Nizza. 

Hier ist es deutlich ruhiger, mit entspannten Orten zum Essen, kleinen Boutique Hotels und dem entspannten Lifestyle der Côte d’Azur mit Blick auf die Villen am Cap Ferrat.

Der natürliche Hafen von Villefranche-sur-Mer gehört zu den tiefsten der Welt, wodurch sogar Kreuzfahrtschiffe anlegen können. Das passiert zum Glück selten. Hier siehst du vor allem die Yachten von Millionären und Superyachten vor der Küste im tiefblauen Wasser. 

Zu den anderen Sehenswürdigkeiten gehört die unter den Häusern gebaute Rue Obscure aus dem Jahr 1260, die Zitadelle, Restaurants an der Marina, die Villa Leopold, der Blick auf Cap Ferrat und natürlich der Plage des Marinieres. 

Er gehört neben der Promenade des Anglais zu den schönsten Orten zum Sonnen nahe Nizza. Denke aber daran, dass es direkt am Strand keine Beach Clubs gibt.

17. Place Masséna

Der Place Massena ist der Eingang zur Altstadt von Nizza und zusammen mit der Einkaufsstraße Av. Jean Médecin einer der besten Orte zum Shoppen.

Der Place Masséna ist eines der Schmuckstücke in der Altstadt von Nizza.

Er ist mit ockerfarbenen Häusern mit Arkaden, Statuen und Boutiquen gesäumt. Die Galeries Lafayette ist einer der besten Orte zum Shoppen in Nizza, zusammen mit der 6 Avenue Jean Médecin. Sie ist die größte Einkaufsstraße im Zentrum und endet am Fontaine du Soleil, dem Anfang der Altstadt. 

In der Mitte des Brunnens steht eine 7 m hohe Statue von Apollo, die inzwischen ein Symbol des Zentrums von Nizza ist. Sie war davor wegen angeblicher Anzüglichkeit für 30 Jahre vom Platz verbannt. 2011 ist sie mit fünf anderen Bronzestatuen auf dem Place Masséna zurückgekommen.

Die Statue ist seitdem einer der Lieblingsorte von Einheimischen und Reisenden für Bilder mit den ockerfarbenen Häusern im Hintergrund. 

Es gibt auf dem Platz außerdem fast das ganze Jahr Events, zum Beispiel Konzerte, das Sommerfestival, Jazz Festival, die Corso carnavalesque (Carnevals-Parade), den Bastille Tag und änhliche Veranstaltungen. 

Hoteltipp:  Suche ein Hotel zwischen dem Place Masséna und der Villa Masséna. Du erreichst von dort alle Sehenswürdigkeiten gut. Das Hotel Le Negresco ist das beste Traditionshotel in Nizza. Ein preiswertes Hotel in der Lage ist das La Villa Nice Promenade .

18. Museum Marc Chagall

Glasfenster von Marc Chagall in Luzern als Symbolbild für seine im Museum ausgestellten Werke ...

Das Museum ist dem Werk des in Russland geborenen französischen Malers Marc Chagall gewidmet.

Es wurde noch zu Lebzeiten von Marc Chagall mit Unterstützung des Kulturministers von Frankreich als ein "Nationalmuseum" im Zentrum von Nizza fertiggestellt.

Insgesamt zeigt die Dauerausstellung 400 Gemälde von Chagall.

Zu den Hauptwerken der Sammlung gehören seine von der Religion inspirierten Gemälde aus der Region Nice, Alpes-Maritimes. Die Kernstücke sind eine Serie von siebzehn Gemälden, welche die biblische Botschaft aus den Büchern Genesis, Exodus und das Hohelied zeigen.

19. Port de Nice

Die bunten Schiffe im Port Nice sind zusammen mit den Yachten einer der besten Orte für Fotos n Nizza.

Hier vereinigten sich der Glamour der Côte d’Azur mit dem Leben der Einheimischen und Reisenden.

Der Hafen ist ein Trendviertel voller Restaurants, kleinen Läden und ein Nightlife Zentrum. Er ist außerdem einer der schönsten Orte um Bilder in Nizza zu machen, vor allem den bunten Booten, mediterranen Häusern und den Villen am Meer im Hintergrund.

Spaziere einmal entlang der Promenade im Osten für einen Blick auf die kleinen bunten Holzboote. Im Westen des Hafens liegen Superyachten von Millionären vor Anker.

Iss danach in einem der umliegenden Restaurants, trinke einen Kaffee oder bleibe gleich für das Nightlife am Hafen.

20. Tag in Cannes, Antibes oder Saint Tropez

Saint Tropez ist eines der Luxusreiseziele in Frankreich. Du kannst das ehemalige Fischerdorf zusammen mit Cannes und Antibes aus Nizza an einem Tag sehen.

Saint Tropez, Cannes und Antibes gehören zu den Top-Sehenswürdigkeiten in Frankreich . Du kannst sie mit einem Tagesausflug aus Nizza mit einem Bus oder Boot sehen.

21. Musée Matisse

Das Musée Matisse zeigt Werke des französischen Malers aus allen Perioden.

Das Kunstmuseum zeigt die Werke, das Leben und private Gegenstände des französischen Malers Henri Matisse aus allen Perioden.

Es befindet sich in der im 17. Jahrhundert gebauten Villa des Arènes nahe den Ruinen von Chimiez. 

Zusätzlich gibt es zur Dauerausstellung regelmäßig Sonderausstellungen zu verwandten Künstlern, Leihgaben und besonderen Werken von Matisse. Das momentane Programm steht auf der Webseite des Musée Matisse .

22. Villa Kérylos

Die Villa ist ein originalgetreu nachgebautes griechisches Wohnhaus aus der Antike.

Die Villa Kérylos ist eine originale Rekonstruktion eines antiken griechischen Wohnhauses. Sie ist die Verwirklichung eines Traums von Théodore Reinach, einem von der griechischen Zivilisation faszinierten französischen Archäologen.

Er ließ Kérylos 1908 nach dem Vorbild der antiken griechischen Villen auf der Kykladeninsel Delos erbauen.  

Heute ist die Villa Kérylos ein Museum und als Monument historique unter Denkmalschutz gestellt. Das Haus verbindet antiken Luxus mit dem modernen Komfort von französischen Belle-Époque-Villen mit edelsten Materialien. 

Dazu gehören alter Stuck, Carrara-Marmor und exotische Hölzer für die Möbel. Die prächtige Dekoration mit Mosaiken und Fresken stellt berühmten Szenen aus den Legenden der Götter und klassischen Helden nach.

Nizza Sightseeing Tipps

• Gute Lage: Suche ein Hotel zwischen dem Place Masséna und der Villa Masséna. Das ist die beste Lage für eine Städtereise. Du erreichst von dort alle Sehenswürdigkeiten schnell. Das Hotel Le Negresco ist das beste Traditionshotel. Ein preiswertes Hotel in der Lage ist das La Villa Nice Promenade .
• Beste Reisezeit: Die Strandsaison fängt in Nizza im Mai an und dauert bis Mitte Oktober. Das Wetter ist auch im Winter vergleichsweise mild. 
• Anreise: Gute Flüge aus Deutschland findest du zum Flughafen Nizza in der Hauptsaison zwischen Mai und Oktober aus fast allen größeren Städten zu einem guten Preis. Mein Tipp ist die Suche mit der "Ganzer Monat" Funktion von Skyscanner. Dadurch findest du am einfachsten einen guten Zeitpunkt.
• Öffentlicher Verkehr: Eine 24 Stunden Tageskarte gilt für die Fahrt zum Flughafen, in die meisten Nachbarorte bis nach Èze und die Fahrt mit dem öffentlichen Verkehr im Zentrum. Das zahlt sich auf jeden Fall aus. 
• Budget: Plane zumindest 150 € pro Nacht für ein 3 Sterne Hotel in der Saison in Nizza ein. Nach oben hin ist in der Region alles offen. Ein gutes 5 Sterne Superior Hotel findest du ab 600 € pro Nacht, ein vielfaches davon ist problemlos möglich. Das Essen in einem Restaurant kostet mit Getränken rund 30 €, der öffentliche Verkehr ist günstig, Tagesausflüge kosten 50 bis 150 €. Rechne insgesamt zumindest mit 150 € pro Tag.

Deswegen ist unsere Meinung von der Region insgesamt auch sehr positiv. Nizza verbindet die süße Altstadt mit dem Lifestyle der Côte d’Azur, gutem Essen und einem Tourismus der mehr auf Qualität als auf Masse achtet.

Das macht die französische Südküste insgesamt zu einem der schönsten Reiseziele in Europa , das aber trotzdem fast allen Reisenden offen steht.

Hafen und Promenade des Anglais

Der Hafen von Nizza-Villefranche gilt mit seinen 503 Anlegestellen, 12 Kais und einer Wasserfläche von 10 Hektar als wichtigster Kreuzfahrthafen im Mittelmeer, hat darüber hinaus aber auch jede Menge Sehenswertes zu bieten. Und das angefangen bei den Hafenanlagen selbst: Am Fuße des Colline du Château gelegen ist der Lympia-Hafen von Gebäudeensembles aus dem 18. Jahrhundert umgeben, die im Stil der italienischen Renaissance und des barocken Turiner Städtebaus gestaltet sind.

Von hier aus lassen sich die wichtigsten touristischen Sehenswürdigkeiten schnell erschließen. Übrigens: Der Besuch des Hafens Anfang September kann zu einem ganz besonderen Ereignis werden. Dann nämlich findet traditionell das „Lou Festin dou Pouort“ statt, das Hafenfest von Nizza, bei dem die ganze Stadt auf den Beinen ist, um sich bei Musik, Straßenkunst und Feuerwerk zu amüsieren. Unser Tipp: Auch für Nicht-Kreuzfahrer bietet es sich an, den Hafen als Ausgangspunkt für die Entdeckung der Stadt zu nutzen – vielleicht nach einem ersten Kaffee in einem der vielen kleinen Restaurants und Cafés mit Blick auf die Schiffe im Morgenlicht?

Der eleganten, stets blumengeschmückten Promenade des Anglais verdankt Nizza seinen Ruf als Stadt des Jetsets und des savoir vivre. Die palmenbestandene Strandpromenade, die harmonisch der Engelsbucht folgt, ist gesäumt von zahlreichen wunderschönen Bauten, die von außen durch ihre Architektur und von innen mit ihren Kunstschätzen beeindrucken. Zu erwähnen sind dabei beispielsweise Les Ponchettes, eine Gebäudereihe zwischen Cours Saleya und dem Strand, die Galerien mit vorwiegend zeitgenössischer Kunst beherbergt. Eine Augenweide ist auch das legendäre Hotel Negresco mit seiner charakteristischen pinkfarbenen Kuppel und der Palais de la Méditerranée, ein ehemaliges Casino, das heute wie das Negresco zu den schönsten Hotels der Welt zählt.

Bill Ebbert had ambitions. He wanted to be an architect. But his father, a builder in Santa Barbara, had different ideas.

“My dad built tract homes in subdivisions,” says Ebbert. “He used to take me out of school so I could go with him to Los Angeles to visit the architects he was working with.” On one of these visits, Ebbert recalls, the architects were “mouthing off about how they have all these AIA [American Institute of Architects] architects working in the back room as drafters—because at the time there was a glut of architects and the practice could pay them less.”

Ebbert’s father pointed out that, at the time, framers were earning more than qualified architects. “That’s the reason I got pulled into framing,” he says. A more lucrative route into learning the construction trade, hands-on experience with his father’s business led to Ebbert running jobs and understanding all the detail that went into building a house from the ground up.

When his father retired, Ebbert bought the business and continued for a few more years in Santa Barbara, where “the market was up and down, up and down,” before switching gears and moving his family to Phoenix, Arizona and a life of full-time parenting. They eventually ended up in Paradise Valley, where the housebuilding bug bit Ebbert again: “I decided to design and build myself a new house. When it was complete, I thought, ‘That was fun!’” A second-wind career in custom housebuilding was taking root.

But his Santa Barbara roots, and the Spanish Colonial architecture that sowed a theme around the region, were never far from Ebbert’s ambitions. So he designed and built an ambitious, one-of-a-kind house on a one-acre lot in Paradise Valley that would honor his origin story. “For me, Spanish Colonial architecture doesn’t date. Nobody says, “Oh, that was done in the ’90s or it was ‘over’ by the 2000s. It’s timeless. And for the standard and price point of the house I was looking to build on spec, I knew it was the right style.”

Coffered ceilings are a theme throughout the home, adding volume to already generous living spaces.

It’s a style that architects George Washington Smith (1876-1930) and Lutah Maria Riggs (1896-1984) revived and popularized in and around Santa Barbara and Montecito in the early 20th century. Traditional red roof tiles, arched colonnades, terracotta, exposed wooden beams—all are hallmarks of the style that the architecture’s early champions would recognize in 5842 E Redwing Road , Paradise Valley, home to Sonoran desert modernism and Southwestern elegance.

Finishes of this exacting standard, including Cantera stone fireplaces, are the result of vision and ... [+] exceptional execution.

Beyond the vernacular, the house speaks its own language through creative custom details, each dreamt up and designed by Bill Ebbert, then executed to precision standards by his team of master builders and highly skilled artisans. The 5-bedroom, 8,300-square-foot house is now on the market for the first time since its original purchase, with Scottsdale brokerage RETSY .

“The attention to detail on the finishes of this house is exquisite,” observes Lisa Kay , co-listing agent with Babbi Gabel . “The custom cabinetry, the colorful hand-painted tiles from Mexico, the alder wood sourced specifically for the coffered ceilings, floors and doors… it’s rare to see that kind of finish in a spec home.”

Add to that list hand-painted domed ceilings. A bespoke bar. A bookcase that reveals a secret office. Windows placed to take in direct views of nearby Mummy and Camelback Mountains. This house is a one-off. Or is it?

Apart from requesting a few modifications to accommodate a vast collection of memorabilia, the home’s current owner loved everything about the property when he bought it on completion in 2012. Over the years, the buyer and the builder kept in touch, says Ebbert. “He’d say, ‘I have to tell you, Bill, I love this house. Every time I walk around it, there’s nothing I don’t like about this house.’”

Evidently. Because that same buyer—now the seller of 5842 E Redwing Road—asked Ebbert to build him another one just like it. Lisa Kay explains that when the gentleman retired, he planned to move to a bigger house, not only to host extended family, but also to accommodate his now much bigger collection of NASCAR and other memorabilia. “But I just love this house,” he told Ebbert, “and I want the next one to be just about the same. But bigger.”

“I’ve known builders and architects to design similar homes for various clients, but never to replicate one for the same client!” says Kay.

With no room for expansion on the one-acre lot at E Redwing Road, a cul-de-sac shared by only two other homes, a two-acre was found nearby. Still in Paradise Valley, still with those mountain views. Still being built by Bill Ebbert and his team. As the new home nears completion, the original, maintained in pristine condition, is seeking a new owner. “Someone looking for a private neighborhood, a worry-free yard, stunning outdoor entertaining spaces and an incredible quality build,” offers Kay.

Or possibly a snowbird hoping for a hole-in-one (or two) at one of the quietly luxurious area’s more than 200 golf courses.
