Boat Name: Saga Sail: US 73, ex, K 49, ex. KC 33 Year Built: 1936 Designer: Bjarne Aas Builder: Bjarne Aas Owner: Kimo Mackey Status: For Sale History: Read the " Saga saga ". Built in Fredrikstad, Norway for Eldon and Kenneth Trimmingham of Bermuda who promptly won the 1936 Prince of Wales Cup in Hamilton, Bermuda. Saga competed in the first King Edward VII Gold Cup, also held in Bermuda. "Saga" lost to Briggs Cunningham's US72 Lulu , but an interesting story resulted from this series. Cornelius Shields came to Bermuda to compete in the same series with US 65 Challenge . When arriving at Hamilton, Bermuda on a ship, Cornelius Shields saw Saga out practicing and was so inspired by Saga's beautiful lines and gracious overhangs, that he couldn't get Saga out of his mind. Upon returning to New York, with Saga his inspiration, Mr Shields commissioned Bjarne Aas to design the International One Design and build 25 of them. The " Bermuda Gold Cup " is now a major stop on the Professional Match Race Series tour and still competed for in the IOD. Saga left Bermuda and sailed with the large fleet on Long Island Sound in 1938, then moved to San Francisco for 1939 and 1940, owned by Myron Spaulding. She made her way to Seattle for Ray Elliot, who sold her to the Murray brothers, who then passed her to Kirk Hull. Kirk placed second in the 1958 Toronto Globe & Mail 6 Meter North Americans in Bellingham with Saga and later won the event in 1961 in Tacoma. Saga competed in the initial World Cup in Seattle in 1973 placing 7th of 20 for Bill Buursma (third among the Classics), and made a good showing in the 1979 World Cup, also in Seattle, where she placed 16 of 25 (second among the Classics) for Paul Longridge. She went to the 1983 World Cup at Newport Harbor, where she was the oldest competitor by 37 years. In the lumpy, challenging conditions of the Pacific Ocean, she still managed to place 13 of 15 and collected the Djinn Trophy for the highest placing Classic. Saga has often been the boat to beat, having won the 2015 Sir Thomas Lipton Cup, her 5th time winning this race over the years. Additional sales listing information: "Kimo, you have the finest 6 metre in the world." - Henrik Andersin, owner of the 6 metres FIN 51 May Be VI, FIN 67 Djinn, as well the 12 metre 'Blue Marlin'. Extensive refit (over 3,000 hours) was recently completed by current Owner of 30 years. The boat is in A-1 Condition throughout and extremely strong and able to tolerate the very high loads of modern sails and rigging. Superb condition due, in large part, to the unusually high quality of materials used in her original construction. SAGA’s Backbone (Stem, wood Keel, Rudder Post and Horn Timber) are constructed of Burmese Teak and the parts are held together by Bronze rod. Also of Teak are her Floors, Mast step, Rudder and Transom. SAGA is the only Classic 6 known to have been constructed in this way. Her hull planking is full length, old growth Fir (aka Oregon pine) and 100% Original. Frames are of Elm and original (with the exception of the lower half of all Frames between Mast Step and Rudder stock which were replaced with laminated Oak frames of increased scantling by Erik Jespersen Boatbuilders). The boat and her recent upgrades were featured in Wooden Boat Magazine's May/June 2016 edition . Post restoration Saga's crew continue to excel in the boat placing 6th of 21 at the 2017 World Championships at Vancouver with 2 first place finishes. Saga and crew came 2nd of 9 overall and 1st Place Classic in the 2018 North Americans. 6 M Whaler by John WelsfordA clinker built double ender in the traditional navy style.
URL: http://jwboatdesigns.co.nz/plans/6m_whaler/ Description:I had been talking to a customer at Boat Books where I worked about the problems of the world and what we could do to set things right, all the usual gripes about politicians, lawyers, and petty bureaucrats, you know the sort of thing. My new friend told me that he was keen to establish a boat based outdoor youth training course to help change the ways of some of the local kids and had considered building a pair of brand new Naval Whalers. Now the cost of one of these today is staggering and way beyond the budget that he could raise, so we sat down and worked out the key features of the clinker built 27ft Naval Trainer and I went home to translate those thoughts into a form both affordable and buildable by volunteer labour. So, after a few months of phone calls back and forth plus occasional work at the drawing board, the 6 Metre Whaler emerged as you see here. Based upon the very successful yawl rigged version of the Navigator cruising dinghy, using the same simple plywood lapstrake over web frames and stringers structure. Traditional in her appearance, double ended, with two masts, and with enough sheer to be really pretty, she needs only about NZ $4000.00 worth of materials and about 220 hours of (competent) labor to complete a very nice little double ended craft which really looks the part. She has a pair of straight alloy tubes as masts, the same sprit booms and proportions of sails as Navigator . There are three rows of reefs in the main, and if the weather requires, she will still balance under main only, or under jib and mizzen only, which gives lots of choices as the wind increases in strength. All spars fit inside the boat to reduce windage when rowing and making stowage when training much easier. An outboard motor is inconspicuous in its well under the aft deck, and there is a steel centerboard that makes her well suited to the shallow harbor and estuaries where she will be based. But that ‘board’ is 85 kg of steel to steady her under what is in fact a powerful rig for her weight. Responses from owners tell me she is a a very fast boat under sail. And in case of really over-doing it, there is enough buoyancy built in to keep all of the occupants afloat while she is bailed out. As a daysailer, one or two can handle her easily. I like these big open boats for the sheer feeling of space and comfort available in a relatively small boat, and it is in this role that the 6 Metre Whaler is most popular. There are quite a number now sailing as dayboats. One small group is chartering a couple and several are being used very successfully as cruising dinghies. Just think of yourself gliding into a grassy bank at the head of an estuary somewhere, Partner at the helm while you stand by the mainsheet, number one Daughter up forward with the anchor line ready to pile ashore and tie up while small Son sits on the tent and groundsheet strapped in alongside the centrecase. You don't have to be home until Sunday night, and are looking forward to a weekend under canvas, voyaging during the day to as yet unknown channels, beaches and shellbanks, searching for the spirits of Susan, Tim and the rest of the Swallows and Amazons. Cantiere delle Marche announces new 31m explorer series RAW with one unit soldCantiere delle Marche has taken the opportunity of the Cannes Yachting Festival to unveil a new 31.1-metre explorer series known as RAW (Recreational All-Weather Watercraft). The first unit has already been sold, with plans to diversify into a full range. The new model has an exterior by Giorgio M. Cassetta , characterised by geometric lines and a bright orange overhang and bootstripe. Key numbers include a seven-metre beam and a range of 4,500 nautical miles at 10 knots, with RAW billed as a "powerful, honest, direct explorer" by the shipyard. "My team and I have noticed a growing trend toward more informal, discovery-oriented yachting," explained Cassetta. "RAW was an opportunity to create a rugged explorer with exceptional content for its size. We wanted [the model] to convey that powerful, commanding look an explorer needs while also being fun and playful." RAW has several functional features befitting its explorer DNA, including drone and helicopter landing capability, storage for up to two five-metre tenders in the bow and the placement of the ventilation trunks outside to preserve indoor space. Interior renderings are undisclosed, though accommodation will be across five guest cabins and three crew cabins. The large aft cockpit is envisioned as the main social hub, with floor-to-ceiling glass doors converting the space into a veranda for suitability in all seasons. The aft deck is relatively open plan with the cockpit connected to both the main saloon and the beach area. Meanwhile, the swim platform is styled as a "panoramic balcony" with a low bulwark and a handrail. This area is accessed by a staircase that can also function as an informal lounging spot with recessed seating or as additional storage space. The sundeck has two possible configurations: the first is dedicated purely to watertoy storage and drone landing operations, with sofa seating positioned forward. The seconds leans into a more conventional layout with sunloungers aft, a bar, an al fresco dining table and a lounge area. The model is propelled by twin Caterpillar engines for a maximum speed of 13 knots. The news follows a string of summer launches and deliveries for Cantiere delle Marche, including the 44.3-metre Mat , the 42.6-metre B2 and the seventh Darwin 86 . The shipyard's first Flexplorer 146 model Maverick is currently making her debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival.
