British technology tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah were among the people initially unaccounted for after his superyacht Bayesian sank in a storm off the coast of Sicily in the early hours of Monday.
On Saturday morning, Italian authorities announced a manslaughter investigation had been launched into the deaths of seven people, after a five-day operation that has seen divers carefully navigating their way into the cabin bedrooms.
After a decade-long legal battle which had seen him extradited to the US to face an $11bn fraud case, Mr Lynch had celebrated by inviting his close friends, colleagues and those who helped him on his legal team aboard his boat as a gesture of gratitude.
Yet a week of sunshine along the Italian coastline would soon turn to horror after the boat capsized shortly before dawn, only offering those onboard a few minutes to get themselves to safety.
British tech mogul Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah were among the seven people who died after the Bayesian superyacht sank near Porticello at about 5am local time on Monday.
Morgan Stanley chairman Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judith Bloomer, Clifford Chance lawyer Christopher Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo also died.
The British-flagged vessel named Bayesian was carrying 12 passengers and 10 members of crew when it sank at around 5am local time near the Sicilian capital of Palermo.
The yacht’s chef, Recaldo Thomas, is already confirmed to have died after his body was recovered from the wreck on Monday, while 15 survivors were rescued.
Here's what we know about the 22 people on board:
British technology tycoon Mike Lynch had been in the headlines long before the boat incident following being the centre of a high-profile fraud case.
The 59-year-old is known for founding Invoke Capital and Autonomy, and his disappearance comes just weeks after he was cleared of all charges by a US jury related to the sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard (HP) in 2011.
HP claimed, just a year after the sale, that Mr Lynch had used accounting tricks to artificially inflate its value before the sale. He spent 13 months under house arrest before being extradited to the US last May for a trial that acquitted him in June this year on all 15 counts.
Mr Lynch told a Sunday Times journalist last month that he was “about to go on a very long holiday.”
In June, he spoke of his “indescribable relief” at being back at home in Suffolk with his wife, daughters and their six dogs. He told reporters: “I am looking forward to returning to the UK and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field.”
Angela Bacares
Wife of Mike Lynch, 57-year-old Angela Bacares managed to escape to safety and is in a wheelchair with abrasions on her feet that prevent her from walking, according to la Repubblica.
The newspaper said she told doctors that at 4am, the boat had tilted and she and her husband were woken up.
Under Angela Bacares’ name, the couple’s estimated wealth is £852m, the Sunday Times Rich List revealed in 2023. They have a house in Chelsea, west London, but primarily live on their farm in Suffolk with their six dogs and rare breeds of pigs and cows.
Hannah Lynch
Mr Lynch was travelling with his daughter Hannah, whose body was lifted ashore on Friday afternoon.
The 18-year-old had just completed her A-levels and secured a place to read English at Oxford University. Hannah’s former English teacher Jon Mitropoulos-Monk said she was “one of the best English students in the country” having scored 100% in her English Literature GCSE.
Patrick Jacob, a family friend, paid tribute to her on Friday, saying: “Hannah was charming and ferociously intelligent with an insatiable thirst for life and knowledge. She was also warm, loving and deeply considerate; remarkably for her age. I am 50 years older than her and in my life I have never met anybody like Hannah. We have lost one of our brightest stars whose future held so much promise. Her loss is unbearable.”
Chris Morvillo
Chris Morvillo is a lawyer who represented Mr Lynch in his US trial. He is a partner at the Clifford Chance law firm who confirmed on Tuesday he was among the six missing.
In his most recent LinkedIn post, he thanked the legal team that helped win Mr Lynch’s trial. At the end of the post, he thanked his family for their support: “And, finally, a huge thank you to my patient and incredible wife, Neda Morvillo, and my two strong, brilliant, and beautiful daughters, Sabrina Morvillo and Sophia Morvillo.
“None of this would have been possible without your love and support. I am so glad to be home. And they all lived happily ever after….”
Neda Morvillo
Chris Morvillo’s 57-year-old wife Neda was with him on the holiday. She has a luxury jewellery brand, which she runs under her maiden name Neda Nassiri.
Her husband’s firm Clifford Chance said in a statement: “Our thoughts are with our partner, Christopher Morvillo, and his wife Neda who are among the missing.”
Jonathan Bloomer
Another of those confirmed to be dead is lawyer Jonathan Bloomer who is the chairman of investment bank Morgan Stanley International.
He is also chairman of the insurance provider Hiscox, which confirmed he is missing. Its group chief executive Aki Hussain said they were “deeply shocked and saddened” by the news.
Mr Bloomer was a defence witness for Mr Lynch during his US criminal trial and the pair are believed to be good friends, according to the Financial Times .
Judy Bloomer
Jonathan Bloomer’s wife Judy was also on board the yacht and has been confirmed dead.
Mr Hussain said in his statement: “Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular our chair, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife Judy, who are among the missing.”
Mrs Bloomer is on the board of The Eve Appeal charity, which focuses on gynaecological cancers. The charity described her as a “brilliant champion for women’s health and medical research... an incredible supporter, committee member, and trustee of our charity for over 20 years”.
Recaldo Thomas
Recaldo Thomas was the superyacht ’s chef and the first person whose death was confirmed.
The Canadian-Antiguan national was found by the Italian coastguard near the sunken boat. A friend of Mr Thomas, who asked to remain anonymous, said the yachting community has been saddened by his death.
She told The Independent: “He was a one-of-a-kind special human being. Incredibly talented, contagious smile and laugh, an incredible voice with a deep love of the ocean and the moon. I spoke to him nearly every day. He loved his life his friends and his job.”
Ayla Ronald
Ayla Ronald and her partner are two of the 15 who survived the yacht disaster, law firm Clifford Chance confirmed.
The 36-year-old worked defended Mr Lynch in court and was on the trip as part of the celebration for his acquittal.
Clifford Chance said in a statement: “Our utmost priority is providing support to the family as well as our colleague Ayla Ronald, who together with her partner, thankfully survived the incident.”
She is originally from Christchurch, New Zealand, but lives in London, her father Lin Ronald told The Telegraph, saying she was “very shaken.”
Mr Ronald said that she was “invited to go sailing as a result of the success in the recent United States court case”.
Ayla’s partner Matthew also survived the boat disaster. There is little more known about his background or condition.
Charlotte Golunski
Charlotte Golunski’s testimony of the ordeal on the ship were some of the first to be published after she was rescued along with her one-year-old daughter, Sofia.
She spoke to Italian newspaper La Repubblica , confirming she survived the yacht sinking and told how she kept her daughter alive after she was rescued. She said: “I held her afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep her from drowning. It was all dark. In the water I couldn’t keep my eyes open. I screamed for help but all I could hear around me was the screams of others.”
The 35-year-old is a partner at Invoke Capital, one of Mr Lynch’s law firms, and has worked there since 2012, according to her LinkedIn profile.
James Emsley
Ms Golunksi’s partner James Emsley was also rescued from the yacht, according to Sicily’s civil protection agency. There is little information on him, but it has been confirmed the 36-year-old is the father of her one-year-old daughter.
One-year-old Sofia was rescued from the water by her mother and subsequently looked after in hospital.
Ms Golunski told the Italian newspaper La Repubblica that her family survived only because they were on deck when the yacht sank after encountering a heavy storm.
Dr Domenico Cipolla told local media that the family have had a “physical and psychological upheaval of their lives.”
He said the hospital provided “toys for the baby, cuddles, and fed them because they were frightened and hungry”.
The family of three left the Di Cristina Children’s Hospital in a black van on Tuesday via a back entrance today. They were accompanied by an officer from the British embassy, who covered the family’s faces with a jacket to hide them from a huddle of photographers.
James Catfield
The captain of the superyacht James Catfield survived the horror and broke his silence on Tuesday with just five words.
He said: “We didn’t see it coming” and was described as “limp” as he waited outside an emergency room in the Sicilian town of Termini Imerese, according to local media.
The Italian coastguard confirmed on Tuesday evening that Leo Eppel, a crew member, also survived the yacht sinking.

Body of last victim left missing after tech magnate Mike Lynch's family yacht sank off Sicily is recovered

Divers have recovered the remains of the last person who was left missing when the superyacht Bayesian sank early Monday off the coast of Sicily, the head of the island's Civil Protection agency, Salvo Cocina, told CBS News on Friday. The body has been brought to shore, not been formally identified.
It is believed to be that of Hannah Lynch, British tech magnate Mike Lynch 's 18-year-old daughter, according to Italian media.
Mike Lynch's body was retrieved Thursday from inside the sunken vessel, which was left resting on the seabed at a depth of more than 160 feet, at a 90 degree angle, making rescue efforts complicated and dangerous.
Shortly after the 184-foot luxury sailing yacht sank, the body of the ship's cook was recovered from the water near the wreck. Divers managed to retrieve four other bodies from the Bayesian on Wednesday, including two Americans.
With the recovery of the body on Friday, the total number of victims rises to seven, accounting fully for all of those who were on the boat owned by Mike Lynch's wife Angela Bacares.
Fifteen people survived the sinking, including Bacares. The survivors were found on a life raft by the captain of a boat that had been anchored nearby.
Prosecutors have been questioning survivors and witnesses to determine what could have caused the luxury superyacht, equipped with state-of-the-art safety equipment, to sink within what witnesses said was a matter of minutes during a storm.

Italian prosecutors are investigating whether the captain of Mike Lynch’s superyacht was at fault when the ship rapidly sank off the coast of Sicily last week, killing Lynch and six other people , a judicial source told Reuters.
James Cutfield, 51, the captain of the Bayesian yacht, is now under investigation for manslaughter and shipwreck, according to the source and Italian media.
Apart from bad weather, authorities in the nearby town of Termini Imerese are investigating multiple crimes of manslaughter and causing a shipwreck in connection with the disaster, according to Ambrogio Cartosio, the head of the public prosecutor's office for the town, who made the announcement during a news conference on Saturday morning.
Investigators have interrogated Cutfield twice since the ship went down just before sunrise on August 19, capsizing its 22 passengers . Prosecutors have interviewed passengers and the eight other surviving crew members, but have not yet named any other parties under investigation.
Cutfield and his surviving crew members have not yet commented publicly on the disaster. A request for comment sent by USA TODAY to a social media account apparently belonging to Cutfield went unanswered on Monday.
Under Italian law, people under investigation need to be notified before autopsies can be performed on the deceased. The investigation will not necessarily lead to charges, including against Cutfield.
The Bayesian , a luxury yacht owned by Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, sank off the coast of Porticello as a storm swept through the area, whipping up a tornado over the water. In the immediate aftermath of the wreck, 15 passengers were rescued and Recaldo Thomas, the ship’s cook who also goes by Ricardo, was found dead.
Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter , Hannah, and four other passengers were found dead inside the ship following a days-long rescue operation. The victims included Chris Morvillo, an American citizen and lawyer for Clifford Chance, his wife, Neda Morvillo, Jonathan Bloomer, a non-executive chair of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife, Judy Bloomer.
Maritime law expert says captain could be at fault
Martin Davies, Admiralty Law Institute professor of maritime law at Tulane University, said there are two factors in the lead-up to the shipwreck that could put Cutfield and his crew at fault – the positions of the ship’s hatch covers and its keel.
The ship's retractable keel could counterbalance the weight of its mast, one of the largest in the world, when down. A failure by the crew to lower it could factor into the investigation, Davies said.
“With a giant mast like it's got, it might make more sense to put the keel down, because that would make it less likely to capsize,” he said.
The yacht may have filled with water from an open side hatch, Franco Romani, a nautical architect who helped to design the ship, told daily La Stampa in an interview on Monday.
"The Bayesian was built to go to sea in any weather," Romani said.
Davies said if the hatch covers were open, “the ship is going to sink more quickly, once it has capsized."
Since the Bayesian was registered in the U.K., British authorities “will be obliged” to open their own investigation, Davies said.
That investigation could also target the ship’s captain or crew for negligence. Bacares, the ship’s owner, would almost certainly not be a target in a criminal investigation, he added.
Davies said that under U.K. law, the owner is only to blame if they "knowingly and willfully caused or allowed the fault” that led to the shipwreck.
Davies said although it is likely too early in the process to pin down negligence charges, Italian authorities may have implicated Cutfield in order to assert their authority to continue investigating the case.
“They have to find a peg upon which to hang their ability to investigate, and I think that's what they've done,” Davies said.

Missing Tech Tycoon Mike Lynch's Business Partner Dies After Being Hit by a Car Days Before Yacht Sinking: Police
Lynch's former business partner and co-defendant Stephen Chamberlain was struck by a car on Aug. 17, and police announced that he'd died three days later

The co-defendant of British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch , who is still missing amid a superyacht sinking in Sicily , has died after being struck by a car, police have confirmed.
Stephen "Steve" Chamberlain, 52, died in the hospital after being hit by a car in Cambridgeshire, England, on Saturday, Aug. 17 authorities said in a statement on Tuesday, Aug. 20. Local police are now investigating his death as they are seeking witnesses to the incident.
Authorities previously reported that a pedestrian in his 50s had been “seriously injured” in the collision, which happened at around 10:10 a.m. on Saturday. The driver of the car was confirmed to be a 49-year-old woman who “remained at the scene.”
The Guardian reports that Chamberlain was out for a run at the time he was hit, citing his attorney Gary Lincenberg.
Cambridgeshire police shared a statement from Chamberlain’s family in tribute: “Steve was a much-loved husband, father, son, brother and friend. He was an amazing individual whose only goal in life was to help others in any way possible. ... He will be deeply missed but forever in the hearts of his loved ones.”

Chamberlain was the co-defendant of Lynch in a U.S. trial over his tech company Autonomy. He was accused of fraud and conspiracy over allegedly inflating the company's earnings with Lynch ahead of an $11 billion deal with Hewlett-Packard, per The Times , TechCrunch and the Associated Press .
The former business partners were both acquitted of all 15 charges in June by a San Francisco jury.
Following Chamberlain's death, his attorney Lincenberg described him as "a courageous man with unparalleled integrity."
"We deeply miss him," Lincenberg said, according to the BBC . "Steve fought successfully to clear his good name at trial earlier this year, and his good name now lives on through his wonderful family."
Lynch remains missing along with his daughter Hannah and four others after the yacht they were aboard sank off the coast of Sicily on Monday, Aug. 19, following a serious storm, PEOPLE previously reported.

The Italian Coast Guard said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE that the Bayesian , a 183-ft. yacht flying the U.K. flag, sank near Porticello around 5 a.m., local time on Monday after a "violent storm."
Twenty-two people were on the vessel at the time, including 10 crew and 12 passengers, authorities said.
Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, was among the 15 people rescued, PEOPLE reported. Six additional people — including two Americans and four British citizens — remain missing, the coast guard and local sources said.

A spokesperson for Sicily's civil protection agency, Francesco Venuto, previously told the BBC that authorities believe the missing are trapped in the yacht.
"We've been searching all day with helicopters and boats. We've found nothing,” said Venuto. “That wouldn't make sense; in these conditions, we should have found something by now.”

A top New York City lawyer who has been missing ever since the Bayesian yacht sank off the coast of Italy on Monday morning had eerily written about his family living “happily ever after” in one of his final social media posts before vanishing with his wife in the shipwreck. Christopher Morvillo, a 59-year-old lawyer who helped British tech tycoon Mike Lynch — the owner of the capsized luxury boat and one of the six people missing — win his fraud trial , thanked the legal team who helped their success in his penultimate LinkedIn post before the tragedy. At the end of the eerie post , he wrote: “And, finally, a huge thank you to my patient and incredible wife, Neda Morvillo, and my two strong, brilliant, and beautiful daughters, Sabrina Morvillo and Sophia Morvillo.”  “None of this would have been possible without your love and support. I am so glad to be home. And they all lived happily ever after….” Morvillo is a partner at white-collar law firm Clifford Chance, which has an office on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. He is a former federal prosecutor who worked on the criminal investigation of the Sept. 11 terror attacks, according to his online bio. He specializes in cases involving insider trading and corporate fraud. Clifford Chance celebrated Lynch’s acquittal in a June 6 press release on its site. Lynch was accused of fraud related to Hewlett Packard’s acquisition of his company, Autonomy. “The acquittal ends a 13-year legal battle, regarded as one of Silicon Valley’s biggest-ever fraud cases,” the firm said.  Morvillo and his co-counsel added, “This verdict closes the book on a relentless 13-year effort to pin HP’s well-documented ineptitude on Dr. Lynch. Thankfully, the truth has finally prevailed. The 160-foot luxury sailboat with 22 people aboard sank off the port of Porticello when a violent storm struck at sunrise Monday, the Italian coast guard said.  Police divers resumed their search for the missing passengers Tuesday, attempting to reach the ship’s hull some 164 feet underwater, where officials believe people may be trapped. The search for those missing has been slow because the Bayesian now sits 50 meters below the surface, where divers can only stay for up to 12 minutes, fire rescue officials said in a statement Tuesday. Fifteen of the ship’s passengers and crew have survived, including a mother who was holding her 1-year-old daughter above her head to keep her from drowning.  One body has been recovered and identified as the on-board chef, officials said. Fire officials have said the six people unaccounted for will be referred to as “missing” until they are located in the wreckage. In addition to the Morvillos and Lynch, the missing include Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, as well as Jonathan Bloomer, a chairman at Morgan Stanley International, and Bloomer’s wife, Judy.  Morvillo, who has residences in New York City and South Kent, Connecticut, hails from a family of lawyers.
