Lil Yachty Lil Boat album

Lil Yachty’s debut mixtape, Lil Boat , is one of the pre-eminent releases of the SoundCloud era. Released on March 9, 2016, it made Lil Yachty a star, spawned multiple hits, and further legitimized the DIY-style rap that emerged at the beginning of the decade.

The Atlanta MC entered the crowded rapper-singer fray with a work that’s split into two distinct sides, seeing him grapple with dueling elements of his personality and career. The first half of Lil Boat sees Yachty flex his flow, while the second half finds him crooning in AutoTune. That may be a slightly reductive way to look at the collection (in reality, he does both throughout), but there’s certainly a kind of TI vs TIP split-personality concept to the whole affair. Yachty uses his style to demarcate who is who, and, despite his glee throughout, Lil Boat is a surprisingly subtle work for the chaotic time it represents.

The Best Songs About Dogs: A Tribute To Our Four-Legged Friends

It takes two: exploring elvis costello’s collaborative albums, best gza songs: 20 hip-hop essentials, a standout work.

Yachty’s debut mixtape is a standout work for the usual reasons – great name, great cover, and two singles that will forever be associated with Yachty and the era from which he emerged: “One Night” and “Minnesota.”

As a title, Lil Boat was perfect. Serving two purposes at once, it created a fitting alt.moniker for the MC while helping a lot of people to pronounce his name (did you actually say it like “yacht”?). Nautical luxury isn’t the most commonly-evoked lifestyle in hip-hop (outside of Puffy), so that theme alone was enough to put Yachty in his own lane. And then there’s the artwork: not a yacht, barely even a boat; it’s basically a little wooden dinghy. Beautifully composed, the image looks like a classical painting, bordered in a red that matches Yachty’s hair. It’s almost Americana in tone – though Yachty’s music is anything but.

All hail “King Of The Youth”

Yachty may be poised and confident on that cover, but he’s also lost in the gloom at sea – an apt metaphor for the musical style he was leading. While not traditional in any sense, Yachty is honest with his emotions in a way that younger generations have always been, and Lil Boat found him attempting to navigate his way through the emotionally turbulent years of his late youth. Shortly after his breakout, Yachty would declare himself “King Of Teens” or, alternatively, “King Of The Youth.” This might have sounded ridiculous to adults who weren’t even sure how to pronounce his name, but those adults were no longer in charge. Lil Yachty was not part of some hip-hop assembly line; like other DIY pioneers before him, Yachty and his crew were making these songs at home, often in a matter of minutes.

Lil Yachty - Minnesota ft. Quavo, Skippa da Flippa (Official VIdeo)

Outside of the Vikings football team and Ice Cube ’s “What Can I Do?,” Minnesota doesn’t get name-checked very often in hip-hop. Simply naming a track after a state was seemingly in line with the aforementioned “half-Americana, half trolling” theme of Lil Boat – but, of course, the song isn’t actually about Minnesota. It’s more of a celebration of Lil Yachty’s arrival on the scene. The draw and significance of having both Quavo and Young Thug on a song in 2016 is hard to overstate, and their guest appearances turned “Minnesota” into a certified-gold hit. At the time, Quavo was just months away from releasing “Bad And Boujee,” while Thug was fresh off Barter 6 and in the middle of his Slime Season run. Together, he and Yachty appeared at Kanye West’s Yeezy Season 3 fashion show, on February 11, where The Life Of Pablo received its public unveiling. Just two days after releasing his debut mixtape, Yachty was at the epicenter of one of hip-hop’s biggest cultural shifts.

Unprecedented moves

Lil Boat was big enough that Burberry Perry – Yachty’s right-hand man at the time and the producer behind most of the mixtape – came under pressure from the fashion label Burberry and was forced to change his name. That wasn’t exactly an unprecedented move, but the speed with which it happened certainly was. It’s not often that an internationally renowned fashion house serves a cease-and-desist to a kid who got famous on the internet and was barely old enough to vote.

Perry’s production on Lil Boat ’s lead single, “One Night’ (Yachty’s best-known song to date), guided the way for the rest of the collection. Even the beats he didn’t produce fall right in line, all cascading bells, and whistles alongside keys that let you hear Yachty’s grin throughout.

Lil Yachty - 1 Night (Official Video)

Lil Yachty’s emergence closely resembles that of the Odd Future collective, who, years earlier, more or less launched DIY rap on the internet (depending on how you view Lil B’s rise to fame). Seemingly overnight, Yachty was partnering with Urban Outfitters and the aptly titled Nautica clothing brand. His rapid ascent would have sounded like fan fiction just a few years earlier but, after his breakout, many artists began following his path to fame on a regular basis.

Having hit it big in such a short space of time, Yachty wasn’t about to slow down. He went on to guest (and absolutely steal the show) on “Broccoli,” a DRAM song with a Yachty-perfect beat. As one of the stars in Quality Control ’s shining roster, Yachty was operating alongside some of the biggest acts in hip-hop. With Lil Boat, he fully shed the “mumble rap” label, completing the transition from SoundCloud sensation to major label star.

About lil yachty.

Lil Yachty makes it look easy. An Atlanta-raised rapper with a sleepy flow and a bright, almost childlike outlook, Yachty (born Miles Parks McCollum in 1997) rose to prominence in 2016 with a pair of mixtapes (Lil Boat and Summer Songs 2) that recast the booming caverns of 2010s rap as something soft, sweet, intuitive, and a little goofy—a sound Yachty once called “bubblegum trap.” Dozens of features and guest appearances followed, including cosigns from Kanye, Chance the Rapper, Calvin Harris, and Macklemore. In 2017, he released his first full-length album, Teenage Emotions. His second, 2018’s Lil Boat 2, took a harder, darker turn but retained the clarity that made his early music stand out. Like Lil Uzi Vert (or Young Thug before him), Yachty represents a turn away from the conventional metrics of rap, favoring slogans over bars, hooks over metaphors, fluidity over stricture, and vibe above all. (He famously—or infamously, depending on your stance toward tradition—once told Billboard that he couldn’t name five songs by either 2Pac or Biggie.) But he’s also emblematic of a broader shift from understanding rap music as an end in itself to seeing it as an extension of the person who made it, a facet of a bigger image or experience. No wonder he FaceTimes with fans, or started his career primarily as a presence on Instagram—for him, the project is social. Still, it wouldn’t make a difference if the music itself weren’t striking—and if he weren’t so casual about it too. Speaking to Beats 1’s Zane Lowe shortly before releasing Teenage Emotions, Yachty—guileless and ever-intuitive—said, “I didn’t know [my sound] was different. I didn’t know until it took off. Then I was like, ‘Well, I don’t sound like nobody else.’” He paused. “I don’t even know if that’s a good or a bad thing. But it’s a thing. It’s a thing.” Yachty’s only expanded his sonic appetite. In 2021, he paid homage to Detroit-area rap with Michigan Boy Boat, an album that saw him adopt the jittery soundscapes and deadpan bars of the region. He added to his repertoire once again with 2023’s Let’s Start Here., a psychedelic rock album that sees Yachty stretch his vocals and soundscapes in even more unpredictable directions. From there, he released Concrete Boys, the debut project from his Concrete imprint. Featuring dexterous flows and spurts of melody from his crew, the 2024 effort affirmed his knack for curation and aesthetics. He’s graduated to a well-tended status as an industry tastemaker and a spitter capable of trading bars with J. Cole. On the track “The Secret Recipe,” we find Lil Boat rapping about being the source of plenty of rap and fashion trends. It’s a fitting song title for a young veteran who’s made a career out of good taste.

Lil Yachty Pops Off On Mitch's Ex-Girlfriend After She Threatened To Expose Him

2022 Toronto International Film Festival - "On The Come Up" Premiere

Lil Yachty was the main character of social media on Thursday night and it was not for the best of reasons. Overall, it all had to do with a couple of ongoing situations. For instance, he was taking aim at Karrahboo, who recently left Concrete Boys. Yachty made the huge claim that he wrote all of her bars, and he even leaked some reference tracks. Meanwhile, Yachty was also dealing with his podcast co-host Mitch, whom he disrespected the other day while interviewing Key Glock.

Yachty had said that Mitch would not be successful if it were not for him. Many felt that this was the ultimate form of disrespect and that Yachty should make a valiant effort to apologize. Instead, Yachty went on a huge rant online where he even canceled the show entirely. Subsequently, Mitch's ex-girlfriend hopped online and threatened to expose Yachty. From there, Yachty hit back and offered up some wild commentary in some now-deleted tweets.

Lil Yachty Speaks Out

In these audio messages, Yachty claims that Mitch used to have fake meetings with Yachty so that he could escape his ex. Furthermore, he laughed at the notion that there was something to actually expose here. It was all part of a pretty bad night for Yachty, who has been subjected to a whole lot of criticism as of late. Only time will tell whether or not he can get back in the good graces of those he offended. Meanwhile, fans will not forget the events of last night, anytime soon. It will be on the internet forever.

Naturally, Rap Twitter had a field day with said clip and criticized Yachty for being a bad friend. Boat addressed the viral clip during his IG Live session and stated he started the podcast to help his friend and said he was going to end it because Mitch wouldn’t defend him on social media. “I aint want to do no motherf—king podcast, n—a, I’m a f—king rapper.”

Mitch then took to X to clear the air, suggesting him and Yachty joke around and are often brutally honest with each other.

As for Karrahbooo, a waitress at Red Lobster set fire to this whole night. X user @C_Staxxz claimed the former Concrete Boy member walked into the restaurant chain to buy some Cheddar Bay Biscuits said she was kicked out of the group after being asked why she left. The user also claimed Karrahbooo told her that “they were really mean to her and bullying her a lot.”

He then claimed that he wrote all of her verses and styled her and the other members of the Concrete Boys. “I wrote every f—king verse you’ve done,” he said. “I dressed you. I dressed all five of y’all n—as, bro. I dressed five n—as every time we stepped out the house. I put an outfit on everybody. I put eight carat earrings in everybody ear. Adding, “We bought a Cartier watch. I gave you that chrome Rolex, bro. You was waiting tables… What are we talking about, n—a? You claim I was stealing money from you. Stealing money from you how? You ain’t made no money.”

He continued, “This the problem with you new artists. Y’all get poppin’ online and then you become more popular than your actual music. You $900,000 in the whole and I got every f—king receipt.” Boat then brought up her viral On the Radar freestyle and said he was trying to make her pop off and it worked. “I slowed the beat down, I put 808s specifically on your verse so when it got to your part and the beat dropped, everyone would be like, ‘This girl is the craziest one.’”

Karrahbooo has yet to respond.

Drake Shares 3 New Tracks On His Finsta Account

L ate Friday evening (Aug. 23), Canadian rap superstar Drake unveiled three full-length tracks on his “plottttwistttttt” finsta page. Featuring three different vibes, he shared “Circadian Rhythm,” “No Face” featuring Playboi Carti, and the long-awaited final version of “SOD.”

“SOD” had been previously teased by Lil Yachty via Kai Cenat’s live stream . The initial record featured a guest appearance by the Atlanta emcee. Still, it was thought never to be officially released due to popular social media user Mr. HotSpot being sampled on the record. He later explained that he would clear the track if Drake and Lil Yachty were willing to create a cleaner version of the song that kids could enjoy around their parents without getting in trouble.

“Circadian Rhythm” is a smooth melodic hit with a heavy bass line and lyrics detailing a scorned relationship between two partners. Drake is known for his ability to construct tracks that showcase his relatability. On the track, he raps, “I need this s**t out the crib, I think it's bringin' bad luck.” Due to the limitations imposed on his Instagram page, there are no comments but still a great amount of engagement on his three different song posts.

The last track, “No Face” is a fiery upbeat smash that came equipped with bars that people believe are targeted towards Kendrick Lamar. On the song he asserted, “This is the s**t that my daddy had raised me on / N**gas got lit off the features I skated on / I gotta know, I gotta know / How you get lit off the n**ga you hatin' on? / Numbers untouchable, they got the data wrong / This is the moment I know they been prayin' on.”

Later in the track he exclaimed, “Quick, swap that s**t out, and I came back reloaded / I'm just so happy that n**gas who envied and held that shit in got to finally show it / I'm over the Moon, yeah, we'll see you boys soon.” It is no secret that Drake has smoke for multiple people following his legendary rap battle with Kendrick Lamar. Over multiple diss tracks, he sent shots at ASAP Rocky , Rihanna, Rick Ross, The Weeknd, Metro Boomin, J. Cole, and countless others.

Even on the song, Drake made mention that the beef felt like it was 20 versus 1. Fans have reacted differently to the new tracks, one fan on Twitter explained, “DRIZZY IS SLIDIN YALL HEAR THIS S**T ?!?!” Another fan stated, “Drake is crashing out, stuff isn’t hitting the same. Baiting him won’t work. Drop the mixtape!!!”

As of now, the three songs have not been uploaded to DSPs. Last time he shared three full songs on his finsta account, they were later uploaded to DSPs the following day.

Lil Yachty Blasts Karrahbooo and Mitch in Explosive Rant: ‘I've Given You a Career and… You Just Disrespect Me’

The explosive IG Live comes after Karrahboo left Concrete Boys.

An explosive impromptu Instagram Live from Lil Yachty saw the Atlanta artist slam his A Safe Place podcast cohost Mitch and former Concrete Boys signee Karrahboo.

Yachty began by addressing Karrahboo and all of the rumors swirling after it was revealed that she's no longer part of Concrete Boys.

Yachty claimed Karrah “verbally abused” people:

“Don’t get on here and make a scene ‘bout n****s kicked you out,” he said, referring to her sudden (at least to fans) departure from his rap collective Concrete Boys.

Yachty further claimed he wrote all of her lyrics (including her breakout Rap Radar appearance, of which he leaked a supposed reference track for), gave her money, gifted her with jewelry, and styled her.

“I slowed the beat down, I put 808s specifically on your verse so when it got to your part and the beat dropped, everyone would be like, ‘this girl is the craziest one,’” he said in reference to their Rap Radar performance.

"I wrote every fucking verse you've done," Boat also claimed. "I dressed you. I dressed all five of y'all n***as bro. I dressed five n***as every time we stepped out the house. I put an outfit on everybody. I put eight carats of earrings on everybody ear. I put three chains on all y'all neck."

He continued, "We bought a Cartier watch. I gave you that chrome Rolex, bro. You was waiting tables... What are we talking about n***a? I changed your mother fucking life and you are here lying, talking about some: 'We bully you'... That shit got me fucked up, bro. You got me fucked up, bro. You disrespectful, bro. You talk to people crazy. You tell people that they are nothing. You tell people you're going to spit on them. You tell people they poor and you talk to my fucking label crazy. You claim I was stealing money..."

Yachty also claimed he is owed $900,000. “I got every receipt," he said. "$900,000 Concrete in the hole.”

Boat then addressed Mitch, claiming he only started their successful A Safe Plac e podcast at Mitch’s insistence.

Yachty's IG Live appeared after viral after clips of their podcast episode with Key Glock made the rounds. An unamused Glock can be seen looking on while Yachty admonished Mitch for not having a purpose in the past.

”Even if I was doing shit back then, I’m older now,” Mitch said when Yachty shared an alleged anecdote about Mitch wanting to get an expensive watch by brandishing a gun.

”[If] I was never in your life, what would you have been doing?” Yachty asked.

Mitch, Lil Yachty, Karrahbooo

Lil Yachty  recently went live and blasted his former artist Karrahbooo  and ex-podcast co-host, Mitch , for “disrespecting” him after he helped them.

Yachty first addressed rumors that Karrahboo was no longer part of Concrete Boys on Thursday (Aug. 22) via Instagram Live. “Don’t get on here and make a scene ‘bout ni**as kicked you out,” he said when addressing her exit from the label. He added that he also gave her money, jewelry, and served as her stylist.

Lil Yachty took to Instagram Live to accuse Karrahboo of being $900k in debt, claiming he was responsible for styling her and writing all of her music, while also alleging that she has been verbally abusive towards him. pic.twitter.com/yauC2WM0N4 — WooSupreme ?? (@WoobensSupreme) August 23, 2024

“I slowed the beat down, I put 808s specifically on your verse so when it got to your part and the beat dropped, everyone would be like, ‘This girl is the craziest one,’” he said about her freestyle and career. “I wrote every f**king verse you’ve done. I dressed you. I dressed all five of y’all ni**as bro. I dressed five ni**as every time we stepped out the house. I put an outfit on everybody. I put eight carats of earrings on everybody ear. I put three chains on all y’all neck.”

He continued, “We bought a Cartier watch. I gave you that chrome Rolex, bro. You was waiting tables… What are we talking about ni**a? I changed your mother f**king life and you are here lying, talking about some: ‘We bully you’… That sh*t got me f**ked up, bro. You got me f**ked up, bro. You disrespectful, bro. You talk to people crazy. You tell people that they are nothing. You tell people you’re going to spit on them. You tell people they poor, and you talk to my f**king label crazy. You claim I was stealing money…”

The “Poland” rapper also called out Mitch and claimed the only reason he started the podcast aside from his rap career was to “help him out.”

“I ain’t want to do no motherf**king podcast ni**a, I’m a motherf**king rapper,” he barked. “Got millions of dollars, I don’t need to talk to other rappers. I did the podcast for Mitch. I done put $400,000 in Mitch pocket. I ain’t f**king with Mitch.”

Boat’s sentiments came about after clips of their episode with Key Glock made rounds online. At one point, Yachty brought up Mitch not having a purpose in life prior to the podcast.

”Even if I was doing sh*t back then, I’m older now,” Mitch said during the episode when Yachty alleged that his co-host once planned to steal an expensive watch by brandishing a gun. ”[If] I was never in your life, what would you have been doing?” Yachty asked.

In his live, Yachty rhetorically asked why Mitch didn’t go online and say that they were “just playing” regarding his remarks in their Key Glock interview.

Lil Yachty calls out Karrahboo and Mitch during explosive Instagram Live

Lil Yachty

In a recent Instagram Live session, Atlanta rapper Lil Yachty unleashed a torrent of accusations against his former collaborator Karrahboo and his podcast cohost Mitch. The unexpected outburst has sent shockwaves through the hip-hop community, particularly among fans of Yachty’s A Safe Place podcast.

Karrahboo’s departure from Concrete Boys

Yachty began by addressing the rumors surrounding Karrahboo’s exit from the rap collective Concrete Boys. He accused her of verbally abusing others and criticized her for making a scene about her departure. “Don’t get on here and make a scene ‘bout n—-s kicked you out,” he stated, highlighting the sudden nature of her exit.

Claims of support and betrayal

During the live stream, Yachty claimed he was instrumental in Karrahboo’s rise, stating, “I wrote every f—ing verse you’ve done.” He detailed how he provided her with financial support and jewelry and even styled her. Yachty expressed frustration over her alleged disrespectful behavior toward others, saying, “You talk to people crazy. You tell people that they are nothing.”

Concerning financial accusations

One of the most alarming claims made by Yachty was that Karrahboo is in debt to him for $900,000. “I got every receipt. $900,000 Concrete in the hole,” he asserted, raising eyebrows about the financial dynamics within their collective.

Addressing Mitch and podcast dynamics

Yachty didn’t stop with Karrahboo; he also directed his ire toward Mitch, claiming that the podcast was started at Mitch’s insistence. The tension between the two was palpable, especially during a recent episode featuring rapper Key Glock, where Yachty admonished Mitch for lacking direction in his life.

This explosive Instagram Live has not only revealed the internal conflicts within Yachty’s circle but also raised questions about loyalty, respect and financial accountability in the music industry. As fans continue to react to these revelations, it remains to be seen how this drama will unfold and impact the careers of those involved.

Lil Yachty makes it look easy. An Atlanta-raised rapper with a sleepy flow and a bright, almost childlike outlook, Yachty (born Miles Parks McCollum in 1997) rose to prominence in 2016 with a pair of mixtapes (Lil Boat and Summer Songs 2) that recast the booming caverns of 2010s rap as something soft, sweet, intuitive, and a little goofy—a sound Yachty once called "bubblegum trap."

Lil Yachty's debut mixtape 'Lil Boat' is such an interesting piece of art from the SoundCloud era to me. The SoundCloud era brought in all of these young kids with bright hair, flipping rap on its head with their silly, fun, trap sound. And this album is in my opinion one of the most interesting and UNIQUE projects from that era.
