How Much Does a Bimini Top Cost? (3 Examples)

There are lots of horror stories about long crossings without a good bimini. Staying out in the sun without protection can get quite annoying and eventually hazardous. Hats and rugs over your head are always a possibility, but if you want to be protected against the sun and rain and still have the ability to drive your boat from the cockpit, hassle-free, then a bimini will be on your list. Of course, the question is how much does it cost?

  • A bimini top will cost you between $1000 and $3000 for an average sailboat.
  • A hard top bimini will cost between $2000 and $6000 (twice as much).
  • A DIY bimini kit costs around $200 - $300.

Not a cheap matter for sure, but as the cost largely depends on the materials used, so let's have a closer look to make sure you get as much as you can for your money.

sailboat bimini top cost

On this page:

Bimini cost for different sizes and materials, how to get a bimini top cheaply, how to save money on a bimini top, hardtop options, what is a bimini top exactly.

Long story short, for an average-sized boat, expect to pay $1000 - $3000 for a new bimini top.

Of course, this depends on size - a bimini for a 60 footer will easily cost you around $5000, while smaller boat owners sometimes make their own biminis using nothing but a DIY store and a few YouTube tutorials, as the structures are less complicated, resulting in $100 costs overall.

But the latter is really all the way at the bottom of the spectrum.

Then there are various materials. If you go for longevity and use a high-quality material that resists saltwater and sun rays well, you will pay more than for simpler sheets.

And finally, you got the tubing. Chances are that unless your boat is very old or you got into an accident, you will only be replacing the sheets. But if not, expect to pay hundreds of dollars more.

And it goes up from there. It won't be unrealistic to expect to pay twice the amounts quoted once you start adding little upgrades, windows, premium coatings, and all that jazz.

So just as is the case with our article about the cost of dodgers , this one too will list some cheaper alternatives.

And just as is the case with dodgers, for biminis too, self make kits exist. You will be happy to hear that you can get a bimini kit for literally one-tenth of the price. Yes, $200 - $300 bimini top kits are plentiful.

One example of a well-known kit is SealSkinCovers. Their bimini kits aren't expensive and you can get them in all sizes. Check out their bimini kit here (SealSkinCovers.com ).

If you are surprised, or if you have read our dodger cost article, where the kits are much more expensive, consider that the structure of a bimini top is way less complicated than that of a dodger.

If we take the vertical 'walls' out of the equation, we end up with a relatively simple flat roof shape, an angle of which is achieved simply by bending the material, not necessarily elaborate stitching.

This is good news for assemblage as well. Putting together a dodger from a DIY kit can be a daunting task. The time and know-how necessary for a DIY route can be enough to steer one away from it, even though it means a significant financial saving.

But with bimini tops being considerably simpler, the DIY way is much more accessible. And if you do end up making some measuring or stitching errors, they impact the functionality less than is the case with dodgers.

Check out the cheap and well-built bimini kit on SealSkinCovers here .

Not to disappoint you from the onset, but unfortunately, it doesn't pay off to penny-pinch when it comes to biminis. Though you can get a custom one done for $500, chances are you will need to replace it much sooner than its $2000 counterpart.

Biminis belong to the group of boating bits that are at the forefront of the battle with elements. Just as sails or lines, biminis have to withstand quite a bit of abuse.

Salt, wind, heat, and sun, conditions often encountered when sailing, aren't fabric friendly. Sure, if you need a bimini for a river pontoon boat used to ride around Central Europe on sunny Sunday afternoons while being garaged off-season, which is pretty much half of a year, it's a different story. But that's not likely the scenario you are facing.

If you don't mind a more frequent replacement schedule, simply because you don't want to spend a lot of money at once, go for a brand such as Sunbrella. They often use acrylic weaves that do the job fine for a reasonable price.

But if you don't mind going premium, having your bimini top last much longer, Marchem fabrics or Topgun are the brands you want.

The higher prices here don't stem from elitism. Think of it as clothes. There the material choice and the subsequent price is also quite closely reflected in durability.

And last but not least, take good care of your bimini top. Cover it when it isn't being used, maintain it, repair small rips sooner, rather than later and when folding it down and putting it up, do it with care so you don't cause unnecessary wear and tear.

Also, when the bimini is folded, use the straps to hold it in place so that it does not flap around in the wind too much. The amount of wear caused by that thing alone is significant.

As you have probably seen, there are also hardtop biminis. These can be made of various plastics, metals, woods, or basically whatever you think of - if you make it yourself.

The durability is of course a big plus. A solid hardtop bimini can last you as long as your boat does.

A popular reason for building hardtop biminis is the possibilities a fixed structure holds. Oftentimes you see these hardtops fitted with lights, for instance, making the nighttime on deck time much more convenient.

Also, solar panels can be put on hardtops, which would otherwise be an eyesore.

Not mentioning the enlarged deck space, since hardtops tend to be sturdy enough to stand on. But beware of the boom. It is very likely to go quite close over the bimini.

As far as cons go, well, the design of hardtops is hated by many. Especially the aftermarket solutions tend not to go hand in hand with the boat's design, resulting in quite appalling structures.

Of course, the inability to take the top down and enjoy the open cockpit goes away, which can be an issue for many.

Then there is the matter of higher windage. Maneuvering in tight places in high winds can become much more painful.

And last but not least, there is the higher center of gravity.

Having a bimini like that done will cost you 1.5 - 2 times as much as what you would pay for a classical one. But it is likely a one-time expense and if you are the DIY type, they are much easier to make yourself, since their architecture isn't really that complicated.

A Bimini top is the sort of a roof over a sailboat's cockpit, most usually made from cloth, that is fixed to a foldable metal structure. It is not the front 'windshield' bit - that is called a dodger - we are talking about the roof part only.

Sometimes the cloth extends down a bit, creating walls of sorts, though these are mostly removable, optional parts. The bimini is usually not see-through, except for either holes or see-through parts just above the helm area so that you can see the sails or the wind direction gauge on the top of the mast.

And since they usually extend all the way back, they have holes for the backstays to be run through them.

Some biminis connect to the dodger directly, so paired with the aforementioned walls, create a full tent.

And some biminis aren't made of cloth at all and instead come in the 'hardtop' variant.

Just as is the case with dodgers, biminis are folded and put up constantly, they have to withstand quite a bit of wind and weather, so even if you just bought yourself a brand new boat, you will have to think about replacing or fixing your bimini sooner and later. So let's see how much they go for.

Biminis are important. Easy as that. Certainly for longer passages, but weekend sailors welcome them too. They can make your stay on deck much more pleasant and protect you from the elements.

They do cost quite a bit and they do need to be replaced every now and then.

But if you make yourself a hardtop, much of the bimini-related pain goes away.

Finding Your Next Bimini Top for Boat: A Buyer’s Guide

Several questions may come to mind when choosing a Bimini top for your boat. Whether you’re a returning buyer or a beginner at sailing, all your queries will be answered in the following buyer’s guide.

Here are some things to consider before buying a bimini top for your boat:

The Material of the Bimini Top

Bimini tops are available in a variety of materials with some being better than the other. This is an essential consideration because the material and quality of the top will affect its longevity.

Here are your options when it comes to materials:

It is an expensive choice but worth the price because of its softness and strength. This material offers strong protection against harsh UV rays and won’t wear out or fade. If you clean it extensively, you’ll have to waterproof it again.

Vinyl-coated fabric makes for good Bimini tops because of its waterproofing capability. It resists water, driving it to the sides. While the fabric is not breathable, it compensates for this by being easy to clean and highly durable.

Solution-dyed polyester

This fabric stands out due to its attractive and rich color appearance. Since the material is resistant to UV rays, it’s effective against the sun. Additional qualities include but are not limited to water repellency, durability, and abrasion resistance. While known to be much stronger than acrylic, polyester’s only downside is that it tends to fade quicker than its competition.

Cotton duck

This is one of the most affordable Bimini tops available on the market. Considering that the material is less durable compared to the ones mentioned above on the list, you can expect its UV resistance properties to be less effective than acrylic.

Types of Bimini Top for Boats

There are two types of Bimini tops available on the market:

  • Off-the-shelf:  These are standard Bimini tops and are designed without keeping any specific boat in mind. Usually, they are available in a rectangular shape but in a limited color range.
  • OEM:  These tops use precise digital templates. Meant to tailor to the needs of specific boats, some boat manufacturers also provide Bimini tops to fit their boats.

Other Features to Consider in Bimini Tops for Boats

Easy storage.

When you’re not using your Bimini top, you can’t leave it out in the open. Since it’s recommended to store it somewhere, it’s best to look for ones that can fit easily into your storage space.

To start, look for a top that has storage boots. If you don’t buy one that comes with the boot, you’ll have to purchase it separately. Also, make sure to always clean the top before storing it somewhere to avoid a build-up of dirt and dust elements.

There is nothing as the right price of a Bimini top. Usually, the price is directly proportional to the quality. If you go with the cheap options, you will pay the price in longevity and you might have to get a new one just after a few weeks. To avoid this, make your budget justifies the features and quality of the Bimini top you’re purchasing.

People Also Asked

The first thought that comes to your mind may concern your Bimini top’s color. In a flawless world, that would work, but in terms of quality, darker materials aren’t as durable as lighter ones due to the higher amount of dyes. On the flip side, darker colors absorb more heat than light colors and are less visible.  For these same reasons, you must decide between quality and heat absorption when selecting the color of your Bimini top.

Experts recommend keeping the boat under 35 mph. Any higher than this, and you may risk your Bimini top detaching. If you want to go at a higher speed, you should implement thru-bolting.

Bimini tops get their name from their place of origin, the island of Bimini in the Bahamas.

316 Stainless Steel Biminis

Durability and Strength:

Stainless steel Biminis are renowned for their exceptional durability and strength. They are less prone to corrosion and damage caused by exposure to harsh marine environments, making them a preferred choice for boaters seeking long-lasting and robust solutions.

Resistance to Corrosion:

Stainless steel exhibits superior resistance to corrosion, making it an ideal choice for saltwater environments. This corrosion resistance ensures that the Bimini maintains its structural integrity and appearance over an extended period, even in challenging maritime conditions.

Aesthetics and Shine:

Stainless steel Biminis boasts a sleek and polished appearance, adding a touch of sophistication to the boat’s overall aesthetic. The shiny finish of stainless steel can be an attractive feature for boaters looking to enhance the visual appeal of their vessel.

Maintenance and Cleaning:

Stainless steel is relatively easy to maintain and clean. It requires minimal effort to keep its shine and appearance intact. This can be advantageous for boaters who prioritize low-maintenance accessories that still offer a polished and well-maintained look.

Heavier Duty Applications:

In situations where a heavier-duty Bimini is required, such as for larger boats or in areas with high winds, stainless steel Biminis are often preferred. The inherent strength of stainless steel makes it suitable for heavy-duty applications where extra durability is crucial.

High-Temperature Resistance:

Stainless steel exhibits better resistance to high temperatures compared to anodized aluminum. This feature can be advantageous in areas with intense sunlight or for boaters who regularly operate in hot climates.

Enhanced Stability:

The weight and density of stainless steel may contribute to enhanced stability in windy conditions. Boaters in areas prone to gusty winds may appreciate the added stability provided by stainless steel Biminis.

Malleability for Customisation:

Stainless steel is malleable and allows for intricate designs and customization. Boaters seeking a personalized touch or specific design features may find stainless steel more accommodating for customization.

Anodized Aluminum Biminis

Not to be outdone, there are some excellent characteristics and advantages of Anodized Biminis.

Lightweight Construction:

Anodized aluminum is significantly lighter than stainless steel. Boaters looking to minimize overall boat weight or those with smaller vessels may prefer the lightweight nature of aluminum Biminis.

Corrosion Resistance:

While not as corrosion-resistant as stainless steel, anodized aluminum still offers great corrosion resistance. This makes it suitable for freshwater environments or areas with less severe salt exposure.

Due to its lighter weight, anodized aluminum is often easier to handle during installation. Boaters who prioritize ease of setup or anticipate frequent removal and reinstallation may find aluminum Biminis more convenient.

Anodized aluminum Biminis are generally more cost-effective than their stainless steel counterparts. Boaters on a budget or those seeking a cost-efficient solution without compromising quality may opt for aluminum.

Ultimately, the choice between stainless steel and anodized aluminum Biminis depends on specific needs and preferences. Whether opting for stainless steel or aluminum, be confident that with an Oceansouth Bimini, you are acquiring a meticulously crafted, enduring, and innovative marine shade solution designed to adapt to diverse boating conditions. The global acclaim of our brand and our unwavering commitment to quality establish our products as a trusted choice for individuals seeking high-performance and dependable marine accessories.

How do I drive on the road with the bimini?

You have two options for folding the bimini: Option 1: Pack the bimini into the provided storage boot. Unclip the straps and/or support poles (if added), then fold the bimini down flat. How to Pick the Perfect Bimini Boat Top for Your Vessel: An In-Depth Guide!

Table of contents, let’s dive in: understanding bimini boat tops, what is a bimini boat top.

Imagine cruising on your boat under the warm sun. A Bimini boat top is your best companion in this scenario, acting as a protective canopy that shields you from the harsh rays. Crafted from a framework that supports a canvas, it is designed to offer a reprieve from the sun while allowing you to enjoy the openness of your vessel. The top is typically collapsible, meaning it can be folded back when not needed or for storage purposes.

The design and materials of Bimini boat tops vary greatly, catering to different types of vessels and owner preferences. From aluminum frames for their lightweight durability to stainless steel options that offer supreme strength — there’s a variety to choose from. The canvas material also comes in various grades and colors, ensuring that functionality meets aesthetics on deck.

Installing a Bimini boat top doesn’t just serve a practical purpose, it also adds value by enhancing the visual appeal of your vessel. It’s an investment in both comfort and style, making it an essential accessory for any boat enthusiast who loves spending time on the water.

The Benefits of Having a Bimini Boat Top.

The primary benefit of a Bimini boat top is the protection it provides from the sun’s UV rays, which are not only harmful to our skin but can also cause significant damage to the boat’s interior over time. The shade created under a Bimini boat top reduces the risk of sunburn and overheating, both for the passengers and the vessel’s components.

Another key advantage is the shelter it offers during unexpected rainfall, allowing boaters to stay dry and continue their journey comfortably. This feature is particularly valuable for those who live in regions with unpredictable weather patterns. Moreover, Bimini tops also help in preserving the longevity of your boat’s seating and dashboard by guarding against weather-induced wear.

Lastly, well-chosen Bimini tops complement the boat’s overall look , potentially increasing its resale value. It’s a simple upgrade that can enhance the boating experience significantly, making it a popular choice among boat owners looking to maximize their time on the water.

Finding the Right Bimini Boat Tops for Your Vessel!

Measuring your boat for the perfect fit..

To ensure the best fit for your boat, accurate measurements are crucial. The width of the area where you plan to mount the top will determine the size of the Bimini you need. This measurement should be taken from mounting point to mounting point, considering the space required for movement and other activities on board.

Height is another important factor, as it affects headroom and overall usability. Measure from the mounting point straight up to the desired height. Remember, too tall might catch more wind and affect stability, while too short may hinder movement. Balance is key.

The length of Bimini tops are based on the area you wish to cover. Whether it’s just the helm or an extended area for guests, the top should adequately cover without obstructing operation or access to necessary equipment.

How to Measure Your Boat?

Start by deciding where you want the Bimini tops to be placed. Once you’ve identified the spot, use a tape measure to get the distance between the points where the Bimini will attach to the boat. Ensure the tape is level and straight for an accurate measurement. Note these dimensions down as they will guide you when shopping for the top.

After measuring the width, stand at one of the mounting points and measure straight up to the desired height. This will give you a clear idea of how high the Bimini top will be above the deck, which is essential for comfort and clearance.

For the length, determine how much of your deck you want covered. Measure along the length of the boat from the front to the back of the desired coverage area. This measurement will help you decide how long the Bimini top should be to provide the required shade.

Choosing the Right Frame and Fabric.

The frame of a Bimini top is typically made from aluminum or stainless steel. Aluminum is lighter and generally less expensive , while stainless steel is more durable and resistant to corrosion. Consider the environment where you’ll be using your boat; saltwater environments might necessitate a stainless steel frame to withstand the harsh conditions.

The fabric for the top comes in various types like acrylic, polyester, and vinyl. Acrylic is fade-resistant and breathable, making it ideal for sunny weather. Polyester is known for its strength and durability, while vinyl is waterproof and easy to clean. Think about the typical weather conditions and usage to select the best material for your needs.

Choose a fabric that has UV-resistant properties to ensure it doesn’t degrade quickly under the sun. Also, look for materials that are mold and mildew resistant to maintain a clean and healthy environment on your boat .

Considerations for Mounting Options.

Mounting a Bimini top can involve various methods, from standard deck mounts to side mounts or rail mounts, depending on your boat’s design . Deck mounts are the most common and can be easily installed on a flat surface. Side mounts are useful when there’s limited space on the deck, while rail mounts attach directly to the boat’s railing.

It’s important to ensure that the chosen mounting option provides a secure and stable base for the Bimini top. You’ll want to avoid areas that interfere with other boat operations or accessories, and make sure the mounts are accessible for installation and maintenance.

Consulting with a marine professional can be helpful in determining the best mounting strategy for your specific vessel. They can provide insights into the best practices for installation and help you avoid common pitfalls that could compromise the Bimini’s effectiveness or safety.

Installing Your Bimini Boat Top!

Diy vs professional installation..

Installing a Bimini top is a task that some boat owners may feel comfortable tackling on their own. It can be a rewarding DIY project that saves money . However, it requires a certain level of skill and understanding of the boat’s structure.

For those who are less confident in their DIY abilities, or who have a complex vessel design, seeking professional assistance is advised. Professionals bring expertise and often guarantee their work, providing peace of mind that the installation will be secure and effective.

When it comes to installing a Bimini boat top, owners must choose between doing it themselves or hiring a professional. A DIY approach can be cost-effective and gives owners a hands-on experience with their vessel. Many Bimini tops come with user-friendly instructions that make the installation process straightforward for individuals who are handy and familiar with basic tools.

On the other hand, professional installation ensures that the job is done correctly from the start. This can save time and prevent potential issues down the road. Professionals have the right tools and experience to handle unexpected challenges that may arise during the installation process. They can also offer advice on the best placement for performance and aesthetic appeal.

Ultimately, the decision depends on the owner’s confidence in their DIY skills, the complexity of the boat’s design , and the value placed on the time and effort required to install the Bimini top. Weighing the pros and cons of each option will help determine the best route to take for a successful installation.

Step-by-Step Installation Guide!

For those opting for a DIY installation, a clear guide is essential. The first step is unpacking the Bimini top and laying out all the components. Familiarize yourself with the parts and the instruction manual. Before starting, double-check that all necessary tools are at hand.

Next, determine where the mounts will be positioned. The placement should correspond to the width measurements taken earlier, ensuring the top will be centered and balanced on the boat. Mark these points precisely, as they will dictate the stability of the Bimini top.

Once the mounting points are established, attach the mounts according to the instructions. This often involves drilling holes and securing the mounts with screws. It’s crucial to ensure everything is tightened properly to avoid any movement that could lead to wear or damage.

Assembling the Frame.

With the mounts in place, begin assembling the frame. Follow the manual closely, connecting the bars or tubes as directed. The frame should be constructed on the deck of the boat to verify that it aligns with the mounts. If adjustments are needed, make them before attaching the frame to the boat.

Once the frame is assembled, carefully position it onto the mounts. Secure it using the provided hardware, checking for any play in the connections. A stable frame is key for a reliable Bimini top that can withstand wind and movement while the boat is in use.

At this stage, it’s wise to open and close the frame several times to ensure ease of operation. Any resistance or difficulty should be addressed before moving on to adding the fabric.

Attaching the Fabric!

The fabric part of the Bimini top is what provides shade and protection . Spread the fabric over the frame, making sure it’s right-side up and aligned correctly. Most Bimini tops have zippers or Velcro straps that secure the fabric to the frame. Begin at the front and work your way back, attaching the fabric evenly to prevent wrinkles or sags.

After the fabric is in place, inspect it from all angles. Look for areas that may need additional tightening or adjustments. The goal is for the fabric to be taut and smooth, with no loose sections that could flap in the wind.

If the Bimini top has straps or supports for additional tension, install these according to the instructions. These elements are vital for maintaining the shape of the top and ensuring it performs well under various conditions.

Ensuring Proper Tension and Support!

The last step in the installation process is to check and adjust the tension of the Bimini top. Proper tension prevents pooling of water and prolongs the life of the fabric by avoiding unnecessary stress on the material and seams.

Adjust the support poles and straps until the Bimini top feels firm and secure. There should be no excessive movement or sagging. Remember that too much tension can also be damaging, potentially bending the frame or tearing the fabric, so aim for a balance.

Regularly inspect the Bimini top, especially after initial use, as the fabric may stretch slightly and require re-tensioning. Proper maintenance from the start will contribute to the overall longevity of the Bimini top, keeping it looking good and functioning well for seasons to come.

Making the Most of Your Bimini Boat Top.

Maintenance tips for longevity..

To ensure your Bimini boat top remains in top condition, regular maintenance is key. Start by rinsing the top with fresh water after outings, especially if you’ve been in saltwater. This simple step helps prevent corrosion and fabric degradation.

Cleaning the fabric with a mild soap and water solution can remove dirt and grime that may accumulate over time. Avoid harsh chemicals and stiff brushes, as these can damage the fabric and protective coatings. For tougher stains, use specialized cleaners designed for marine fabrics.

Inspect the frame and fittings periodically for signs of wear or rust. Address any issues promptly to prevent further damage. Lubricating moving parts like hinges and connectors can keep the frame operating smoothly. When not in use, consider using a boot or cover to protect the fabric from UV exposure and environmental pollutants.

Using Accessories with Your Bimini Boat Top.

Bimini tops can be enhanced with a variety of accessories to increase functionality. These additions should be chosen carefully to ensure compatibility and avoid overloading the frame.

From storage boots that protect the fabric when folded to light kits that provide illumination for evening outings, there are many options available. When selecting accessories, consider how they will affect the weight and aerodynamics of the Bimini top.

It’s also important to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for installation and use of accessories. Improper attachment can lead to damage to both the Bimini top and the boat itself. Take the time to research the best options for your specific model and needs.

Covers and Enclosures.

Bimini top covers and enclosures can extend the usability of your boat by providing protection from the elements. Full enclosures allow for an almost cabin-like experience, ideal for cooler climates or overnight trips. Choose materials that match the quality and characteristics of your Bimini top for a cohesive setup.

Storage covers, on the other hand, are designed to protect the Bimini top when it’s not in use. They typically feature a snug fit and durable fabric to shield against sun, rain,, and debris. Investing in a cover will preserve the appearance and functionality of the Bimini top, ultimately saving on replacement costs.

Adding Lights or Speakers.

Customizing your Bimini top with lights and speakers can enhance the ambiance and enjoyment of your time on the water. LED light kits are popular for evening cruises, providing soft illumination without draining the boat’s battery excessively.

Marine-grade speakers can be installed to create a pleasant music experience while onboard. Ensure that the speakers are waterproof and corrosion-resistant to withstand the marine environment . Proper installation is crucial to prevent damage to the Bimini top and maintain structural integrity.

Enjoying Your Time on the Water!

Sun safety and uv protection..

Spending time on the water is a wonderful way to unwind, but it’s important to stay mindful of sun safety. The shade provided by a Boat Bimini top significantly reduces the risk of sunburn and heat exhaustion, allowing you to enjoy the outdoors comfortably.

Even with the shade, it’s advisable to apply sunscreen, especially on exposed areas like the face, neck, and arms. Wearing protective clothing and a wide-brimmed hat further minimizes sun exposure. Remember to hydrate frequently, as the combination of sun and water activities can lead to dehydration.

For prolonged periods on the water, consider using sunshades or umbrellas in addition to the Bimini top. These extra layers of protection can make a significant difference in preventing sun-related health issues.

Maximizing Comfort and Enjoyment.

With the right Bimini boat top, your time on the water can be maximized for comfort and enjoyment. Whether it’s a leisurely cruise, fishing expedition, or watersports adventure , having a shaded area on your boat opens up a world of possibilities.

Investing in comfortable seating and additional amenities for your boat can further elevate the experience. Cushions, bean bags, and storage solutions can enhance the functionality and coziness of the boat, making it a welcoming space for relaxation and socializing.

Remember to pack essentials like snacks, drinks, and entertainment options to ensure a pleasant outing. Having a well-equipped boat with a thoughtfully designed Bimini boat top creates an inviting environment for making lasting memories on the water.

Where to Purchase Bimini Tops!

The aluminum tubing has a 1” diameter for maximum strength and also includes stainless steel hardware to assemble and mount your bimini top on your boat. Honestly, I barely found negative criticism about the X GEAR. It’s a high-quality bimini, and without exaggerating, you might even find yourself not wanting to go boating anymore without it. Be aware of that!

9# 4 Seasons Bimini Top 4 Bow

4 Seasons Bimini Tops for Boat Cover 4 Bow 8 ft. Long with Frame Canvas Hardware Kit and Boot (54

The 4 Seasons is a 4-bow bimini top that suits large boats and provides exceptional shade. The cover top is made of 600 Denier fabric. It’s waterproof but not coated like the other bimini tops, which might be why some reviewers found the cover very thin, which made them a little skeptical about the durability.

This bimini has a 1″ doubled wall anodized aluminum frame, which is sturdy and durable. As 4 Seasons says, this bimini doesn’t require any tools, bolts, or nuts to put it together. There are connection buttons on half of the frame that enable you to snap the tubes together. There were some complaints about this too.

Some reported that the tension buttons don’t pop up and neither down snap when assembling the bars. 4 Seasons offers 7 years of warranty, but it doesn’t specify what it covers. Frame? Material? It’s a little vague, so you will have to ask the company itself.

It comes with a convenient storage boot, stainless screws, and stainless steel eye hooks to secure the two front nylon straps and rear poles.

To summarize, despite those few drawbacks mentioned above, this bimini got a high rating on Amazon. There must be good reasons for it.

  • No tools needed to assemble the bimini
  • Provides plenty of shade
  • Heavy-duty frame
  • Waterproof top cover
  • Includes storage boot
  • Some customers complained the bimini came without hardware.

11# SereneLife 3 Bow Bimini Top

SereneLife Waterproof Boat Bimini Top Cover - 54-60

The SereneLife is a 3-4 bow bimini top that comes with nice parts to install it on your boat. It includes three crossbars, two front tubes, two rear support poles, a storage boot, and stainless steel hardware. So you are all set!

Like most bimini tops, It’s made of marine-grade 600 denier polyester canvas, a strong material that resists harsh outdoor conditions, such as UV rays, rain, sun, dirt, etc. In addition, it has double-stitched seams that withstand tears, ensuring it lasts for a long time.

Users didn’t find any issues with the stitching or the material, except that some would have preferred a white color to a dark one because It’s cooler under the sun. The tubing is 1″ double-walled aluminum, which is pretty strong. Many boaters said the top withstood 35 mph wind on the water while it was up.

Know that the pivots are plastic on this bimini, so if you want something more sturdy, you’ll have to replace them with metal ones…and of course, this will increase the cost.

Overall, people are happy with the Serenelife and its affordable price. If only the instructions were more precise, it would have simplified many users’ lives.

Bimini Tops’Buying Guide

How to Buy a Bimini Top For boats

What Features to Consider

The quality of your cover top is one of the most crucial factors when choosing a bimini. You certainly don’t want to buy a new cover top every few months. So before you decide to choose one, make sure it has those elements listed below.

  • Lightweight: To stow it easily
  • UV Resistant: The sun can get through the fabric if it’s not coated with a UV agent.
  • Water Repellent: To keep water out
  • Sturdy: It needs to withstand tear
  • Breathable: to keep you cool.
  • Easy to clean

You’ll be able to find all these characteristics in coated synthetic fabrics. However, cotton and polyester combined are not as durable as synthetic materials because the yarns of the fabric itself don’t have a high level of protection against UV light and mold.

A Pigment dyed polyester material is more robust, breathable, blocks UV rays, and sheds water better, making it an excellent choice.

If you want a good yet affordable synthetic fabric, you should look for an acrylic-coated polyester named Hot Shot. Other excellent options are Ultima™, dyed polyester fabric, or Sunbrella™, solution-dyed acrylics. Both materials are stain-resistant, UV/fade resistant, water repellent, and offer superb breathability.

Bimini Tops Fabric Options

Sunbrella is a high-quality soft woven fabric that not only looks fantastic but also withstands UV rays and fades exceptionally well. The only drawback with Sunbrella is that it tends to lose its waterproofing ability after extended uses and will have to be re-waterproofed. Another thing worth mentioning is, Acrylic tops have a relatively high price tag and don’t hold up abrasion as well as the other fabrics.

Vinyl-coated polyester fabrics are extremely popular because they are sturdy, durable, and waterproof. On the other hand, vinyl-coated materials aren’t breathable but super easy to clean, which is a big plus.

Cotton Duck

This fabric is inexpensive but is less durable than the other materials mentioned because its UV coating degrades faster, and it also tends to leak.

Solution-Dyed Polyester

Polyester material, like, for example, Top Gun, is very strong and withstands extremely well UV rays. Cover tops made of polyester provide more protection against water and abrasion but tend to fade quickly.

Bimini tops come either with a frame made of aluminum or stainless steel. Aluminum is more economical and performs better in freshwater. Aluminum tubing should be coated with a protective oxide layer to withstand oxidation and pitting. Stainless steel frames are more robust and don’t rust but are twice the price of aluminum.

Also, stainless steel is more stable and thus holds up better in higher winds, allowing you to navigate faster on the water. It’s the ideal choice for powerboats and saltwater.

Most bimini tops sold online come with plastic hardware, which is not durable. Plastic tends to deteriorate in the sun and break more easily. Stainless steel fittings are the most expensive, but they are more robust and durable.

Before storing your boat for an extended period, ensure your bimini top is clean and completely dry to prevent any mildew from building up. Store your bimini in a storage boot to keep it free of dirt. Bird dropping, rain, and even long sun exposure can damage the bimini.

Questions People Often Ask

Q: how much shade do you need.

Knowing the length and height of the bimini will help you determine how much shade your top cover will provide. You also need to know what area of your boat you want the bimini to shade. For example, if you often go boating with friends or family and children, you’ll probably need a longer bimini with a medium height. If you are regularly out on the water by yourself, you will want to look for the smaller and taller bimini top so that you can stand and move around while getting good shade.

Q: What Color to Choose?

Bimini tops aren’t designed only to protect you from the sun but also to give a nice look to your boat. Bright colors are more visible and help other boats see you from a distance, decreasing the risk of collisions. Bright colors also reflect light and make you feel cooler on hot days. Darker colors are less visible and absorb more heat. But as surprising as it might seem, dark bimini tops are more durable than bright ones because the fabric has a higher amount of dyes. The more pigments, the more protection the material provides.

Q: What Are 2, 3, And 4 Bow?

The bimini top bows are the frame parts that attach to either side over the boat width. Bimini tops include 2, 3, or 4 primary bows.

  • 2 Bow : The 2 bow is the smallest bimini top and is mainly used for inflatables and shorter V-hull fishing boats.
  • 3 Bow : The most popular bimini top is the 3 bow and is more used for performance boats, ski boats, and V-hull fishing boats.
  • 4 Bow : 4 bow is the largest bimini top, which is designed for larger boats such as deck boats or pontoon boats.

Q: How Fast Can I Drive With My Bimini Top?

As a rule of thumb, it’s not recommended to exceed 25 mph with the top open. But if the frame and fitting are stainless steel, you’ll be able to speed up to 35 mph and even up to 45 mph if it’s a high-quality bimini top.

Q: How to Clean Your Bimini Top?

It’s easy to clean a bimini top, but it’s also easy to destroy if you use the wrong methods. There are things you should avoid doing, like spraying your top with a pressure water jet and using strong household cleaning detergents. Yes, it will give you excellent results, but it will actually damage your bimini top without you realizing it. Here are two easy, effective ways with simple instructions to follow.

  • How to Clean It
  • 1/4 cup of gentle dish soap.
  • 4-liter water
  • Spray down fresh water on your bimini top, and gently apply the soap with a soft brush.
  • Allow the soap to sit for several minutes, and scrub gently again with the soft brush.
  • Rinse using a garden hose, and let the fabric dry completely. You might repeat the process if the stains resist.
  • Apply 303 marine fabric guard to reproof the material when the canvas is completely dry.

2. How To Remove Mildew

  • One Cup of Sodium tetraborate ( Borax)
  • One Cup of Vinegar
  • Two cups of lukewarm water
  • Mix all the ingredients, and once ready, apply to the mildew spots.
  • Let the mixture stand for about 10 minutes.
  • With a soft brush, scrub the areas, rinse, and aerate the top until it’s completely dried.

Final Thought!

With this list of Bimini tops and a helpful guide, it’s practically impossible not to find the right match for your boat. Some are a little less popular, but that doesn’t mean they are of lower quality; quite the contrary. However, no matter what bimini top you choose, make sure to measure your boat properly and, most importantly, that it meets all your needs.

As you can see above, the top pick is the Naviskin and the top-rated is the Leader . Both bimini covers are extremely loved by boaters because of their heavy-duty construction and affordable price. The other bimini tops are also of excellent quality but, for some reason, a little less popular.

What about you? Which of these bimini tops do you like best?

36 thoughts on “Best Boat Bimini Tops – Enjoy Boating All Seasons!”

Something like this would make a great gift for my parents, they got their boat just a couple of years ago, but it doesn’t have any protection from the sun. The area they live in (and boat in) is pretty windy, and I don’t know much about boats. Do these Bimini tops handle well in windy conditions?

Great question. I am glad you ask:)

Most bimini tops handle wind well at 35 or 40 mph with the top open. If you exceed the maximum speed, you will have to collapse the cover and store it in its boot. Bimini tops constructed with stain steel less are more robust than aluminum and hold better in the wind.

I hope it helped. If you have any questions, please let me know. I’ll be more than happy to assist.

Thank you for the comment, and I wish you a great day.

I must say that you have given out amazing details of some good Bimini tops for boats, and your research has been great. Do u think buying from the company directly is more beneficial or will it be cheaper on Amazon?

I have two boats and I need to fit both of them out. Let me check out some more sites.

Thanks. Regards,

The bimini won’t necessarily be cheaper if you buy it from the company directly. Quite the contrary. It can even be more expensive. However, many bimini tops today are imported but sold by American companies.

I hope it helped. Don’t hesitate to contact me if you need more info. I am always happy to assist.

Thank you for the comment, and I wish you a lovely day.

Hello, Daniella! What a wonderful idea! I liked to know that I would be able to go for a sail even when the weather isn’t that good and enjoy my Bimini top all year long. As far as you are concerned which one of them would you highly recommend? Thanks for sharing and keep safe!

Hi Antonio,

Yes, a bimini top is a must-have on a boat if you want to enjoy our trip on the water. The sun can be dangerous, and the problem at sea is that we don’t always feel the heat due to the wind.

After long researches and reading all the comments on Amazon, the one that turns out to be the most loved Bimini is the Navisking. In fact, it’s marked as the top pick in red on the article. You can’t miss it:)

I hope it helped. Please let me know if you need more info. I’ll be glad to asssist.

Thank you for the comment, and I wish you a fantastic day.

Hi Daniella!

I love going on boat adventures! Usually when we do travel by boat, we don’t have a bimini top. We just travel without a shade. I didn’t realise how necessary it is until I read your article. We do need it to protect ourselves from the sun and in case it does rain. I really like the colour of the KINGBIRD 4 Bow Bimini and it comes with 2 years warranty. It looks like a good quality bimini for the price and I would consider on buying it!

Yes, the color of the Kingbird is beautiful, and it’s a big bimini. Bear in mind that this one is designed for bigger boats. Excellent cover top, and if you get it, I am sure you’ll love it like many other boaters.

If you have any questions, let me know. I am always happy to assist.

Thanks so much for the help in choosing a great boat bimini top. It’s so helpful to have a bit of shade when out in the middle of the water in the hot summer! I’m pretty cost-conscious, but I don’t want to buy a low-quality bimini top if it isn’t going to last through the season.

Which of these would you say is the best value option? Do any of these stand out as great options that have both decent quality and a competitive price?

All of the bimini tops listed are of excellent quality and affordable for what they offer. The most popular cover top is the first one on the list ( Leader 3 bow), and the one that has received the highest rating is the Naviskin.

I hope it helped:)

If you need more in, let me know. I’ll be more than happy to assist.

While holidaying last year we were on the lake and a gust of wind instantly blew the bimini off our pontoon boat. It was maybe a 20mph gust that hit us and we were maybe doing 15mph. So thanks for your advice here on speeds. We will not be using our bimini at speed again! It has the plastic quick release clips. Do you know if we can strengthen these fastenings at all?

Thank you for passing by, and I am glad you’ve found this article useful:)

If you want your bimini to hold well while traveling on the water, you should use 316 stainless steel quick-release clips. Plastic is not durable and will break easily and quickly.

Let me know if you need more info; I’ll be more than happy to help.

I wish you a great day.

Hello. The article you wrote about the Bimini top really helped me out as I have a boat with no cover for it and am worried that UV rays will damage its surface. My uncle has skin cancer issues, so he needs something safe to use on his boat but wants to save money, too, so he’s looking into this Naviskin 3-4 Bow because I like polyester canvas fabric being high-quality material also not breaking the bank. It’s like a hat for your boat!

Many Thanks

Sorry for your uncle. I hope he will get over this very soon. Great choice, the Naviskin is a durable bimini top that offers excellent protection against UV. I am sure you’ll make good use out of it.

If you have any questions, please let me know. I am always happy to help.

I love summer, and boating can be so much fun and refreshing in my part of the world. However, we have not been using bimini tops, but as you say, they are important if you want to enjoy your trip on the water longer and not worry about getting burnt or dehydrated. Your post could not have come at a better time for me. My personal choice would be the Leader 3 Bow Bimini Top. I love that it is strong and tear-resistant. Thank you, I will be purchasing soon

I agree with you; boating is fun, especially in the summer:) Lots of fun.

The Leader is the most popular and most sold bimini top on Amazon, so, yes, it’s a great choice.

However, I am glad you made your choice and if you have any questions, please, let me know. I’ll be more than happy to assist.

I can remember the last time I was out on the sea for fishing when I got the worst sunburn ever. The Leader 3 Bow Bimini Top looks promising because it is made from very durable materials. I love how it is UV resistant because it will be exposed to hundreds of hours of sunlight. I also checked it on Amazon, and the product is not that expensive.

The Leader is a durable bimini top and inexpensive compared to those made by private retailers. Excellent bimini for the summer!

If you need more info, please me know. I’ll be more than happy to assist.

What a coincidence, the other day I was looking at the map of the Caribbean and saw a place called Bimini! A part of the Bahamas. Away from that, this is quite informative, while the sun has its many benefits unchecked exposure has its consequences. Hence taking care of the skin is vital.

I’m sure these biminis are light for easy installation, what are the chances of them being blown away when it’s windy? I’d prefer number 8 as it says “Very stable on a rough sea”.

As you say, Bimini is a beautiful place in the Caribbean; I love it!

Bimini tops aren’t designed to navigate at speed higher than 35 MPH and neither to withstand very strong winds. If you exceed that speed, your bimini runs the risk of blowing off. If there are strong winds, you won’t go out boating, thus no need to use the bimini. As I mentioned, stain steel frames are stronger than aluminum frames, and if you want a more durable bimini, you’ll have to choose a stain steel bimini top.

I hope it helped. Please, let me know if you need more info. I am always happy to assist.

So I just got a boat and have never bought or used a bimini top before so this might be a stupid questions. But… Are they foldable? I mean, can I somehow fold them down if I do want some sun. Or is it better to choose a smaller size? And am I supposed to take it down every time I’m not using it, or can I just leave it on there?

Great questions:)

Yes, you can fold the bimini top if you don’t want to use it. If you store your boat for a while, you will have to fold it and store it in a boot. It will keep it clean.

I hope it helped.

Let me know if you need more help. I’ll be more than happy to assist.

Great article! I enjoyed reading about all of your recommendations for boat bimini tops. As you mentioned in the article, it’s important to have the most protection from the harmful UV rays of the sun and often times sunblock and a hat may not always cut it. Having one of these for your boat seems almost essential to me.

Hi Rachel,

Sure, a bimini top is an important part of your boat, as it protects you from the sun and rain. Every boater should have one on their boats.

Let me know if you have any questions, I am always happy to help:)

Thank you for the comment, and I wish you a wonderful day!

This landlubber from the Manitoba prairies is getting her taste of the sea. After just reading a post on seashore resorts, what should I come upon but your post on boating. The sun can be a scorcher. For people who sunburn easily a Bimini would be essential. Where is much of this boating done? Would it be done in fresh water or on salt water? I was pleased to see that you even gave instructions on how to remove mildew. I may find myself using your instructions some time. Thanks!

Hi Carolyn,

Thank you for passing by:)

To answer your question, you can go boating where ever you want with those bimini tops, whether at sea or on lakes, they fit the bill!

If you have any other questions, please let me know. I’ll be more than happy to help!

I love boating, but I do not go as much as I would like to. It takes a lot to go out and boat. So much that goes into it. From food, finding a spot, and making sure safe from the sun. This is the first time I have heard of Bimini tops. However, I like that I can use them when I do go out and spend all day in the sun. My sister has a boat and I bet they would love a new Bimini top. With all the styles mentioned I like to know are they easy to put on and take of or is it complicated? Thanks for the read by the way.

Hi Kiersti,

Yes, you are right, it takes quite a lot of organization when going out boating, but you would agree that it’s well worth it:)

All these bimini tops come with instructions, and they are pretty easy to mount. The only thing you have to do is assemble the pieces, like a puzzle, and you are good to go:) They are easy to put on and take off. Some people found the instructions awkward, but they managed to put their bimini  on.

I hope it helped. Please let me know if you have more questions. I’ll be more than happy to assist.

Wow, this is quite a selection of bimini tops for boats, which makes me wonder if it is a case of one size fits all, or would these bimini tops only fit specific size boats?

We have just bought a rubber hulled boat and it does’t have any sun protection, so would these be possible to mount on a rubber hulled boat? Or does it need to be a fiberglass type of hull?

How wind resistant are these bimini? Would we need to take it down if we encounter wind, or will it not be a problem? Thanks

Bimini tops come in different sizes, heights, and widths, so it’s important to measure your boat before you buy a top.

You surely can install it on a rubber hull boat, but you’ll probably need to add some custom-made carbon fiber brackets on the sides to be able to fix it. Those brackets are sold on eBay and are super durable. I would take my bimini down at 40 mph, more than this, chances it won’t stay on your boat.

I hope it helped:) Let me know if you have more questions, I am always happy to assist.

Thank you for the comment and I wish you a lovely day.

One of the things I noticed for almost every top, and that is that people think the instructions are badly written or worthless.  This also cuts across a lot of products today.   On the surface, these look like pretty easy tops to install. However, any time you are attaching screws, you need more than just pictures. For that reason, I like the VINGLI 3-4 Bow Bimini Top.  The first thing it says is easy to install.  The con about not enough colors doesn’t hold much water.  Just choose one and live with it…..or move on to the next.  That frame, with 1.5mm thickness will be able to handle most of the wind you will encounter. For my money, this is it.  Nice review.  You give us lots of selections and advice.

Yes, I think the instructions play an important role in the installation unless you are already familiar with bimini tops. Great choice, the VINGLI 3-4 Bow is a superb bimini top, I am sure you’ll love it, plus it’s easy to mount:)

Wow this is a very interesting post. I usually go with my dad for fishing in his boat and lately we’ve been thinking of buying a bimini top because the amount of UV-radiation we’re exposed to is more than normal. We’re not just looking for any type of bimini top, we want something that can help us fish a bit easier maybe a bimini top we can add fishing accessories to. Do you by any chance have recommendations on bimini tops that are pretty ideal for fishermen like us?

Any of the Bimini Tops listed in the article are perfect for fishing. As long as it fit your boat, you are good to go! I hope it helped and if you have any other questions, please let me know. I’m always happy to assist. I wish you a lovely day!

I wasn’t quite sure what a Bimini Top was until I opened up and read this article. At first, I thought maybe it should have read Bikini.

Every boat should have one of these, as there is nothing worse than sitting in the blazing sun watching someone fish with no form of cover available. Believe me, I have been there. Do these Bimini tops fit all makes of boats, or does it have to be a specific type of boat?

Yes, bimini and bikini are very similar, agree:)

Bimini tops won’t fit all boat sizes. Some are designed for small boats, and others for bigger boats. Please see the buying guide in the article”>buying guide in the article; I am sure you’ll find it very useful.

I hope it helped, and if you have more questions, feel free to ask. I am always happy to assist.

Thank you for the comment, and I wish you a fantastic day.

Each customer that we work with  has specific requirements for a bimini top. Our goal is to custom make a bimini top to meet as many of your requirements as possible.  We bend all of our tubing which makes us able to customize your top and plan for storage when you aren’t using it.  We also offer a feature called a spreader bar.  This removes the need for the strut or strap towards the back of the boat and allows easier access into the boat, and works great for anglers!

1. Leader Accessories Bimini Top

Leader Accessories Bimini Top

You will probably find it beneficial that the mounting hardware is made of stainless steel and that the storage boot is color-coordinated with the rest of the bimini top. There are 13 colors and six different sizes of the product you can choose from. In addition to this, there are two fabric options – 600D solution-dyed fabric and marine-grade 600D polyester canvas.

Another advantage is that the stitching is double overlapped to add more durability. Thanks to the fact that the legs are double-walled, the aluminum frame is very sturdy and reliable. Also, two nylon straps are attached to the front and the rear part of the structure.

  • Installing and assembling the structure is very easy.
  • The fabric of the cover is of very good quality.
  • You can choose from 13 colors and six sizes.
  • This bimini top features double overlapped stitching for extra strength.
  • A disadvantage is that the height of this bimini top is not adjustable.
  • The instructions that come with the product are a bit challenging to understand.

2. Naviskin Bimini Top Cover

Naviskin Bimini Top Cover

When you purchase this bimini top, you will also get the aluminum frame, a storage boot, and the mounting hardware. A definite advantage is that the mounting stainless screws come free of charge. Naviskin provides a 1-year warranty.

Assembling the unit is pretty easy as it is equipped with quick-release mounts. The material the cover is made of is waterproof, so you shouldn’t worry that the rain can damage your boat. Since this Naviskin bimini top can be dismantled entirely, you can use only the canvas if you wish. A drawback of this product is that the instructions that it comes with are very poor.

  • You will find it easy to put together and install this item, thanks to the full package that includes everything that you need.
  • The poles and the cover are very sturdy and durable.
  • There are ten color options.
  • You can either use the whole structure or just the canvas.
  • The instructions coming with this product are not very detailed.
  • Another disadvantage is that the stitches on the front and the back are only single.

3. MSC 3 Bow Bimini Top Boat Cover

MSC 3 Bow Bimini Top Boat Cover

Unlike other similar items, this one is equipped with two rear support poles. All the necessary mounting hardware is included in the price of the product. So you won’t have to buy any screws, straps or hinges separately. You can mount this bimini top both vertically and horizontally.

There is a variety of sizes and colors you can choose from. Keep in mind that if you need to buy a replacement canvas, it would be cheaper to purchase a new complete top. Also, if you want to travel by boat and leave the bimini top up, you should be warned that it will wear out a lot faster.

  • This bimini top has proved to be easy to install.
  • Another advantage is that the rear poles take less space than the straps would have.
  • You can install this item both horizontally and vertically.
  • The product is offered in a range of colors and sizes.
  • This product comes with plastic mounting hardware.

4. MSC 4 Bow Bimini Top Boat Cover

MSC 4 Bow Bimini Top Boat Cover

There are two rear poles which are intended to provide better support.  The poles are 40 inches long, which includes the plastic tips which come at the end of each. Keep in mind that the rear supports have to stay upright in the storage boot, whereas the forward supports should be folded back.

If you don’t want to make a new hole in your boat, you can remove the attachment pieces and install quick release pins. When you order this product, you also get a storage boot. You can choose from a range of colors and sizes.

  • The instructions coming with this product are simple and easy to follow.
  • You will probably find the mesh storage compartment very convenient.
  • This product is equipped with two rear poles, which are long enough to support the top.
  • Installing the unit can be pretty quickly done.
  • The mounting hardware is made of plastic, which is not considered a very durable material.

5. XGEAR Bow Bimini Top Boat Cover

XGEAR Bow Bimini Top Boat Cover

A significant advantage of this item is that its stitching is double overlapped, which means that it is stronger and more durable than other boat covers. Installing this bimini top takes only a few minutes.  The fabric part is made of marine-grade 600D polyester canvas, which has proved to be a solid material when it comes to shading.

Thanks to its four nylon straps for the back and front, the frame of this construction is strong enough to protect your boat. You can choose from 10 colors and 13 sizes. Keep in mind that it is not recommended to mount the brackets of this bimini top on inflatable boats.

  • This product comes at a very reasonable cost.
  • Compared to other similar items, this one is better as its hardware parts are made of stainless steel.
  • The construction is very durable and strong, which is ensured by the four nylon straps and the double overlapped stitching.
  • It will take you only several minutes to install this item.
  • This product doesn’t have rear supporting poles, and it relies only on the four nylon straps.

6. 4 Seasons Bimini Top Boat Cover

4 Seasons Bimini Top Boat Cover

The support of the frame is ensured by two rear poles and two nylon straps, which have upgraded clips. Thanks to its 600D fabric, this bimini top is waterproof. When you purchase this product, you get a matching boot.

In case you need to fold this bimini top flat, you can also do this. To be precise, this unit folds to about 6 inches and can lay flat on the rear deck.

  • Installing the unit is very easy and quick, and there is no need for additional tools to put the structure together.
  • This unit stays stable even at higher speeds of the boat.
  • There are two poles and two straps to support the frame.
  • You will receive a matching boot with the purchase of this bimini top boat cover.
  • This bimini top comes only in five colors you can choose from.

How Do I Protect My Boat from the Sun?

Bimini Top Reviews

Keep in mind that if you do not take good care of your vessel, it won’t serve you for a long time. You have made such an investment with the purchase of your boat. So you will certainly not mind spending a bit more to make sure that it is well – maintained. There are several things you can do to protect your boat:

  • Make sure it is clean – before you put any protectant on your vessel, you should ensure its cleanness. There are a lot of boat washes that you can use for this purpose. Remember that if the boat is not clean enough, the protectant cannot be absorbed into its surface.
  • Use a protectant – it serves as sunscreen for your boat. You can get any cleaner wax to do so. This material will make your boat shiny, but at the same time, it will seal the surface and thus protect it from the harmful UV rays.
  • Maintain your vessel in good condition – whenever you come back from your trip in the water, remove the dirt that the top surface has gathered, put some light wax on, and also some polymers to protect it from the sun.
  • Get a boat bimini top – it will protect not only your boat but also yourself. Of course, it costs a lot to get such a piece of equipment, but it is worth it.
  • There are different types of bimini tops – some provide full cover, others shield just part of the vessel. If by any chance you can’t find the product that meets your needs and requirements, don’t worry. You can get a custom bimini top for boats.

Warning! Some people use dishwashing soap to clean their boats! We advise you to avoid doing this, as it will strip off the wax and damage the vessel’s surface.

The time spent in the water affects the condition of any water equipment that you use. So it doesn’t matter if it is your boat, your surf, or your bodyboard – you need to take good care of it to extend its longevity. If you are interested in knowing how to select and protect your bodyboard from being exposed to the sun and water, read our detailed article, and enjoy the waves!

What is the Bimini Top?

Before deciding whether you need one, probably you would like to know what a bimini top is . Read the following part of our buying guide to find an answer to this question:

  • A bimini top is most typically a metal structure that is covered by canvas.
  • People put it on the cockpit of their boats to protect them from the sun or rain.
  • The frames are usually made of stainless steel or aluminum. If your boat is a small one, it is advisable to get a bimini top with an aluminum frame, as it is light-weight. Vise versa, if you have a larger vessel, you need a structure made of stainless steel, which is heavier but endures the marine weather conditions better than the aluminum one.
  • These types of products can be used on any boat.
  • It is crucial to have a bimini cover on your boat so that you won’t get sunburnt or dehydrated.
  • Using such a top on your vessel, you will be even able to use it in the rain.

We hope that now you are well informed on what a bimini top is, and why you need it to protect your boat. If you are curious to learn about other boat equipment and accessories , visit our homepage. There you can read our reviews on the top products and choose the ones that will contribute to your pleasant boat experience. How to Install a Bimini Top?

Best Bimini Tops

Once you have made up your mind and purchased this product, you will surely need some tips on how to install a bimini top. We have done some serious research, and we have contacted trustworthy experts to provide these useful steps. Follow them, and you will find installing a bimini cover a pretty easy thing to do:

  • When you look at the reviews of the products that you consider buying, check if they come with a manual. Keep in mind that following the instructions as close as possible will save you a lot of time, energy, and effort. Some of the manufacturers send illustrated and detailed manuals on how to install a bimini top. Others can even offer a video showing the whole process with all the tricks you need to know.
  • Once the product has arrived, unpack it and make sure that you have all the necessary parts. Then you need to assemble the bow pieces. Slide the left and right bow on to the middle one. When the holes have lined up, use screws to tighten them.
  • The next step is to remove the fabric top from its case. Put the canvas on a clean surface, so that the pockets for the frame are facing up. See if these pockets have any buttons or zippers, and unbutton or unzip them. Now, you have to insert the bows into the pockets, button, or zip them up.
  • Most of the bimini tops are equipped with straps that are intended to ensure more stability. If this is your case, then you need to attach them. You can do this by inserting the loop end of the strap through the cutouts of the front and rear pockets. Then put the hook end in the loop of the strap and pull tight.
  • Whenever you have attached the straps, it is time to connect the eye ends to the secondary bows. Doing so, you will provide even more sturdiness. To do this, you need to remove the screws from their jaw slides. Then turn around the secondary bow, put the eye ends into the jaw slides. Check if the holes have lined up, and after that, insert the screws again and tighten them. This step should be repeated with each one of the secondary bows.

These are the most basic steps you need to follow to install the majority of bimini tops.

A guide to selecting bimini tops.

Blazing hot sun rays beating down on the water can quickly scuttle a pleasant afternoon on your boat. That's where a Bimini top is a welcome addition to any craft. These open canvas covers provide the necessary shade for the cockpit of your boat and help keep things cool.

The Bimini top gets its name from the island in the Bahamas where it was invented. These handy covers truly make the difference in boating comfort. Generally made from aluminum or stainless steel, most Bimini top frames collapse for storage and are easy to raise for shelter against the sun or rain. If you're looking for shelter and shade on your craft, here's a look at how to pick a boat Bimini top to provide shade and shelter.

Type of Boat

The first thing you need to keep in mind when looking for a boat top is the type of boat you own. There are different dimensions to consider if you're looking for a fishing boat Bimini top, an inflatable boat Bimini top, or a small Bimini top for a boat.

The heights will vary depending on the make and model of your boat. There are different Bimini tops for competition skiing boats, pontoons, and other watercraft. You'll need a specific Bimini top if your boat has a tower.

Decide on Dimensions

When searching for a boat Bimini top, you'll also need to decide what area of the craft you want to be covered. Our Bimini top for boats selections come in a variety of sizes, ranging from five to ten feet. Six-foot long tops are the most common length in use.

To measure properly, find the midpoint of the area you want to be covered. For the width, measure the distance from the center to the main mounting points on both the port and starboard sides. To decide on length, work from that midpoint once again and measure the space you want to cover on both sides, fore and aft. To determine the height, you need to stand inside your boat. Measure starting from the main mounting points, not the floor, up to the desired position overhead. The higher you position your boat Bimini top, the less shade you'll have.

Final Touches

The final choices you'll need to make before purchasing your boat Bimini top include fabric style and storage. The fabric you select for your Bimini top should be durable and water-resistant. The color of fabric you choose should complement the look and style of your boat. Buying a top with fabric that has been treated to make it both mildew and UV resistant makes it a solid investment. The fabric itself should be soft, lightweight, and easy to handle and clean. Options include polyester, vinyl, and woven acrylic.

Pricing new Dodger & Bimini

Hello all, I'm in the process of getting a new dodger & bikini for my 1988 Hunter 33.5. I received a quote between $2200-$3600 for the dodger & $1900-$2800 for the bimini. I already have a dodger frame and just need a new dodge. Will need a new frame for the bimini. The question is, does these quotes seem reasonable to you? I live on the east coast by the way. Brian

Justin_NSA

I still am shocked by BOAT (Break Out Another Thousand ) prices! These may be acceptable. The devil is in the details. Will the bimini have a window? Side curtains? Make sure it doesn't interfere with the boom. Dodgers are foreign to me. I imagine that the more window area the better for forward visibility. They probably drive up cost too.

The options is what's driving up the cost. I'll take pics of the existing old dodger and tell them to quote for a replacement like that. As far as the bimini is concerned, not sure if rail or deck mount makes a big difference but I imagine the rail mount is less expensive. Just wondering if even the beginning price range is reasonable. Brian

In general, those quotes aren't out of line but the devil is in the details.

This is true. It just seems a bit much for that but I'm starting to believe the price range is within reason. Brian

That's amazing. If I were to try that mine would look like a cheap patch job. I know my limits and will stick to someone that does that for a living. Good to know the total price is not far off the range I got though. Many thanks.

When we got a new dodger in 2011 I was told by the builder that a large part of the $3,500 cost was the frame, and he could rebuild all of the soft parts for about $1,000. Now the stitching is breaking down and the canvas is a bit shabby, and we want a different color, so I got 3 quotes for the soft parts, all between $3,500 and $4,200. 2 are from the immediate bay area and 1 from the delta area. It appears that both labor and material costs have escalated.

We bought a bimini from the canvas guys on this site, SBO, and a custom awning to my design that ties into the bimini and covers the cabin at anchor or in port. I was very happy when we bought them, and they are still in good shape 15 years later. And their prices are very reasonable. Give them a try, and compare with your current quote.

The price for fitting new fabric to an existing frame seems highish. But you want good materials - especially for the windows. As for the bimini, you might like to look at stock bimini's on sites that cater to powerboats. A couple of bows and some polyester cloth will not be $1900 to $2800.

Ken13559

I've a h326 with metal arch with 2-parts bimini (fro & aft of arch). Does SBO has the h326 Bimini pattern such that they could fabricate one set without me taking dimensions? Anyone any idea? Ken Y

The bimini should include a cover for when it's closed. My Strataglass window also has a removable cover. The window is needed to watch the Windex. I would want removable panels for the dodger windows as well to protect them from scratches.

6 BOAT bucks. It is all about yours and the crews personal comfort. What is that worth? Pricing the canvas for a dodger as much as a new sail. Feels a bit much.

Bimini Tops For Boats: Choosing the Right Material

Choosing the right bimini top material for your boat can be a confusing task. Learn how to find the right marine fabric for shade protection here.

Marine_Fabrics

If you’ve recently purchased a pre-owned yacht or boat and plan to fix or completely refurbish it, you may consider getting a new bimini top. Bimini tops are open-front canvas or fabric coverings supported by a metal, collapsible frame that serves as a boat shade structure. These can be a great addition to any watercraft, whether you’re planning an outing with your family and friends or want to spend a lazy afternoon fishing.

A bimini top is an essential accessory you or your boat customers will want to obtain. As you know, one of the risks of whiling away the hours on the water is getting too much direct sunshine. A small investment in a marine fabric bimini top can eliminate this risk and, at the same time, increase your boating enjoyment by providing a comfortable shade while still allowing that cool breeze off the water to flow through.

How to Choose A Bimini Top

  • Type of Bimini Top – Bimini tops come in various types. Most are suited explicitly for yachts, sailboats, pontoons, ski towers, etc. Be sure to bring your boat's make, model, and year when shopping to make an educated selection.
  • High-Quality, Marine-Grade Fabrics – The canvas, or fabricated part of a bimini, is constantly exposed to the sun, heat, and other weather-related conditions, so it’s typically the first part to deteriorate. To prevent this, purchase a bimini with high-quality, marine-grade fabric. You’ll need a breathable material that will withstand the test of time, keep a beautiful appearance, won’t tear, shrink, or stretch, and will be UV, water, mold, and mildew resistant.
  • Fabric Color and Style – Selecting the right color and style of fabric will enhance your boat’s appearance and increase its value. Be sure to select a light shade color (to prevent your new material from fading) that complements the existing hue of your yacht or boat.
  • Fit - Bimini tops come in different shapes and sizes and have 2, 3, or 4 bows. To get the right fit for your boat, start by measuring the length, width, and height of the area on your boat that you need the Bimini to cover. Remember that the most important measurement will be the width between the mounting points (NOT the width of your boat.)
  • Coverage Area – Before making a custom bimini, consider how and in what ways you’ll be using your boat. For instance, do you anticipate you and your family sitting in your boat on the water all day? If so, you may want to buy an extended bimini to ensure everyone will have enough shade. Or do you plan to go fishing by yourself and a friend? In that case, you may want to go with a smaller and taller bimini that will allow you to stand and walk around your boat all day while you fish.
  • Mounting Frame – Most bimini tops are supported by a mounting frame made from stainless steel or aluminum. Generally, a stainless steel frame works best for saltwater boating environments, as it can withstand higher winds and corrosion. At the same time, aluminum is usually the best frame choice for freshwater boating environments.
  • Speed Rating – To prevent your bimini from tearing or breaking and potentially damaging your boat, look for a bimini top that will support a high speed of travel when it’s open (i.e., up to 35 miles per hour.)
  • Price – Buying custom bimini tops can be much more expensive than buying a standard, ready-made one. But ordering a custom top also means that the final product will fit perfectly on your boat, be made of better and higher quality materials, and last longer.
  • Warranty – No matter how high the fabric quality is, even the most rigid fibers will eventually break down over time. But buying a fabric with a long-lasting warranty (at least a five-year minimum) covering most incidences can significantly help protect your investment.
  • Storage Boot – Besides your custom Bimini top purchase, you should also plan to buy a storage boot. That way, you’ll be able to safely and neatly store your Bimini top in a compact position and keep it clean and dry whenever it’s not in use.

Choosing the Right Marine Bimini Fabrics

The quality of the bimini top fabric is crucial to how it will look on your craft and how long it will last over time without deteriorating. When looking for the right one, you should have a checklist of essential elements the fabric should have. Key elements to look for in an excellent marine fabric are:

  • Soft Texture - Is it easy to handle?
  • Lightweight - These fabrics should be able to stow.
  • Controlled stretch for ease of fabrication - You need to be able to shape it to the frame easily.
  • Environmentally friendly coating - Everyone has to keep the environment in mind!
  • Easy to clean and maintain - You want a hassle-free clean (why do more work for yourself?)
  • Mildew resistant - You are surrounded by moisture, and mildew is a challenge you must keep under control.
  • Colorfast - If you take the time to pick a color, you don't want it to fade and make your boat look old!
  • Waterproof - You want it to be a rain shelter and a sun shade!
  • UV resistant - Sunburns can happen even through fabric - it is necessary to have UV protection built into it as well.
  • Matching Color Palettes - You want to choose an extensive range of colors to allow your boat the best match and creative design possible. Remember to remember that white tops reflect heat and dark fabrics absorb heat.
  • Easy to Store - You want to be able to put the top away just as quickly as get it out
  • Excellent Warranty - Any good fabric product will come with a great warranty - be sure to check into this before deciding on which one you invest in.

Fabrics made of a Vinyl and Polyester Composite are on the market and meet ALL the above requirements. You can find these fabrics at companies specializing in high-performance laminated and coated fabrics, like Herculite Inc. (herculite.com). Herculite offers a selection of marine fabric products that are special vinyl and polyester composites such as Regatta® Marine Fabric with exclusive Rain Kleen® finish, and Herculite is also able to make custom fabric material to your specifications if need be. Regardless of where you go for your fabric, if you can confirm that the above criteria are met, you will get a bimini top that will enhance and protect your marine craft for years. How Much Does A Boat Bimini Top Cost

The comfort of a Bimini top to protect you, your guests and your boat from the harsh UV rays of the sun is essential for boating enjoyment. Bimini tops come in permanent hardtop or collapsible soft-top version with and without transparent screens.

Good quality Bimini top kits are available from Amazon ranging between $200 and $300. A purpose built Bimini with quality Sunbrella material will cost between $1000 and $3000 for average boats. A hard Bimini top made of durable materials will cost twice as much.

Investing in a Bimini top to suit your needs and provide optimal protection and comfort is essential to ensure that destructive effects of UV radiation are minimized. Let’s look at some of the options and considerations when you are considering a new Bimini top.

Bimini Tops Standard And Customized Design & Costs

Good quality Bimini tops can be purchased from outlets like Westmarine or Amazon.com that will fit most small leisure craft and are supplied with all the hardware to allow for DIY fitment. Good quality Bimini tops range in price from $200 to $500 and supplied in kit form for DIY fitment.

Sailboats can also be fitted with these off the shelf DIY Bimini tops but may require a Bimini top to be designed to fit with the owner’s needs. The Bimini top may require specialized design to accommodate Solar Panel arrays and clear Isinglass panels to allow good visibility.

Choosing to have a soft Bimini or a hardtop Bimini will also require a bespoke solution for your sailboat. The costs of specially designed and manufactured Bimini tops can range from $1000 to $3000 for a soft top and $2000 to $6000 for hardtop Biminis.

If you are just planning to have some occasional protection from the sun it is important to design the Bimini to be easy to put up and take down without the need for special tools. Lightweight and sturdy materials must be combined to provide a structure that will withstand the wind and be UV resistant to the sun.

Materials such as polished Aluminum and Stainless Steel are most commonly used for the frame of the Bimini top with quick release connections to facilitate putting up and taking down the structure. The material used most often is Sunbrella.

The material has been specially developed for marine applications on outdoor furniture and structures. Sunbrella is UV and stain resistant and mold and mildew resistant. The material is bleach cleanable and breathable.

The darker fabrics and thread used is more UV resistant than lighter colors and also provide better shade in direct sunlight. The Sunbrella fabric can also be specially treated to make them water resistant providing you with protection against rainstorms and waves splashing abourd.

The Sunbrella material is also ideal for making boat covers, sail covers and to upholster the cushions used outside the boat.

Sailboat Hard Top Bimini’s

Hardtop Biminis are often already designed by the boat architect as an option for fitment at a later stage. The boat manufacturers already have the templates and materials best suited for their yachts. It is often them best route to follow to stick with the designed solution.

If you require a unique design for your sailboat you will have to contact a specialist designer and manufacturer to do the project for you. The amount of wind resistance that will result from the hardtop will require secure fitment of the Bimini to the existing structure.

Consideration has to be given to the fitment of Solar Panels to the Bimini hardtop or a rainwater catchment system. The design also needs to create a dry protected space from where the yacht can be sailed during long passages.

Hard Vs. Soft Bimini Tops

Managing the weight of a boat is critical to get the best speed over ground to your port of destination. Hard Bimini tops add extra weight to the boat compared to soft tops or no Bimini at all. Hard Bimini tops are also limited in size and may not provide as extensive coverage as is possible with more flexible soft cover designs.

The cost of hard Bimini tops is much higher than soft tops and more often double the cost of a soft-top design. Hard Bimini tops are rigid and will result in cracking as a result of wind resistance. The fitment points to the boat may also be the source of water intrusion into the hull and core of the boat.

Soft top Biminis are excellent choices to provide protection from the elements when needed and removing and cleaning them is easy. If the windy conditions are too severe the soft Bimini top can be collapsed or removed until after the storms have dissipated. They are also easy to remove and store during winterization preparation.

The installation of any shade structure or modifications to your boat requires some careful research and design. Consult others and identify and photograph examples of the features that you like on other boats. Consult with the boat yard where your sailboat was made and ask them for advice.

Adding a very specialized permanent structure to your sailboat may adversely affect the resale value as new buyers may not want your bespoke design. It is far easier to remove and replace soft Bimini tops and will make your boat more saleable.

What size of Bimini top to get for a boat?

It is important not to get too small of a top or too short which will leave you ducking every time you are out boating.

Height of Bimini tops for boats

Make sure to measure your boat for fitment of a Bimini top. If you are looking to stand under the top, stand up in your boat and make sure you buy a top that is high enough for your height. You would take the height of top you want and subtract how high the top will mount, then add the height of your top. In most boats, a 3-5′ Bimini height is sufficient.

Width of Bimini tops for boats

The width of your top will depend on the width of your boats mounting points. If you have a pontoon boat, it will need to be 8-8’6″ wide. If you have a open bow, this may need to be narrower due to the V in the front.

Length of a Bimini top for a boat

Determine how much of the boat you want shaded, if you have an open bow, a 6-7′ Bimini top may be perfect. If you have a pontoon, you may want a 10-20′ length depending if you want the whole boat shaded or just a portion where you drive.

Investing in a good quality Bimini top is a great way to maximize your enjoyment of your boat. Whether you spend a day on the lake Bass fishing, skiing or sailing you will need some respite from the sun. The harmful UV rays are a leading cause of skin cancer and attacks the gelcoat and materials exposed to it.

For as little as $200 a DIY Bimini kit can be purchased online or at marine stores that will suit most applications. Look for materials that are rust resistant and easy to maintain. If you are looking for a more specialized Bimini for your boat consider the manufacturer designs and stick to soft top designs to keep costs and weight down.

Bimini Top Benefits and Options

Blue and White Sea Hunt with Bimini Top

When you're out in an open boat, its easy to get too much sun exposure, which can result in a bad burn. Because of the way water reflects sunlight onto your body, the sun you get on a boat is worse than the sun you get while on land.

While covering up with a hat, proper clothing, and applying sunscreen will aid in protecting you from the sun, it will not offer you the shade that a Bimini Top will provide.

Bimini Tops will offer you the most complete coverage while boating. A Bimini Top consists of a metal frame which supports a canvas that is open on the sides. It's sort of like an umbrella with 4 legs that covers a portion of your boat. Bimini Tops make relaxing on the water easy, so you can stop worrying about damaging your skin.

Boat Covers Direct® offers top of the line Bimini tops by Carver. Our Bimini tops are offered in the best materials in the industry including Sun-DURA®, Sunbrella® and Outdura®. Many tops are in stock and can ship the day you order.

Carver Bimini Tops are designed and engineered in Landrum, SC and are produced in Carver's state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities. Carver has over 30 years experience manufacturing boat covers and Bimini tops. Their Biminis come in lengths from 5' to 10' long and they will mount on boats from small inflatable's to large cabin cruisers. Carver Bimini Tops come standard with aluminum tubing and nylon fittings, but are available in full stainless or with the option of stainless steel fittings. The main bow of their Bimini top is double-walled, to provide extra stability. Their fittings are of the highest grade in the Bimini industry. They offer specialty square tube bimini tops for pontoons and tower bimini tops that are made to clamp onto towers. Replacement canvases for pontoon Biminis are also available.

You can choose your Bimini Top size , or you can go with one of our manufacturer's recommendations . To choose your size, we just need to know the width between your mounting points, height from the mounting point up, and the length of canvas you would prefer.

A Bimini Top is a great investment for an avid fisherman, family boater, or anyone who spends time on a boat. It's a must have item for hot summer days. A Bimini Top will pay for itself over the years by saving you sunburns and keeping you comfortable while boating.
