Motor Yacht

Serene is a 134 metre motor yacht which was launched in 2011 by Fincantieri Yachts, and is believed to be one of the most technologically advanced in the world.

The Fincantieri Yachts team developed the Serene project from a groundbreaking concept design by Espen Oeino with the interior spaces designed by Pascale Reymond from Reymond Langton Design.

She has seven decks, a hangar and two helicopter landing pads, a large sea-water swimming pool and a tender garage suitable to fit a submarine.

Delivered in 2011, she is one of the largest yachts in the world and a benchmark in technology, innovation and style, not to mention winner of the World Superyacht Awards 2012 in the 3,000-tons-and- above category.

Fincantieri could not have had a more spectacular debut in the sea’s most exclusive market segment with a project reflecting the importance they place on the sea, technology and owner satisfaction.

Serene has been built to meet SOLAS regulations (Safety of Life at Sea), under the supervision of the Lloyd’s Register of Shipping and finally registered under the brand new, at that time, PYC (Passenger Yacht Code).

A Closer Look at the $330 Million Superyacht Serene

The Serene is one of the largest privately owned superyachts in the world. She is in the top ten with regard to the length, but it’s also among the most luxurious and extravagant vessels. The floating palace has accommodated some of the wealthiest people in the world. The estimated value of the Serene is $330 million, which also places it among the most expensive as well. She has an interesting story and has traded hands a couple of times. To fully grasp the magnificence of the luxury superyacht , we take a closer look at the elements that make it so special.

The building of the Serene

The Serene was commissioned by Yuri Shefler, who is a Russian vodka exportation magnate. The agreed-upon cost or the vessel was $330 million. He chose Italian Shipbuilders Fincantieri to complete the task, which was accomplished in August of 2011. The ship is classified as a Superyacht measuring 439 feet and 4 inches with a beam of 60 ft 8 inches and a draft of 18 ft and 1 inch. The gross tonnage is 8,231 tons and she is powered across with water by twin screw propulsion. The guest capacity is 24 with space to house a crew of up to 52. At the time of delivery, the Serene was the ninth largest superyacht in the world, but since that time, it has been replaced with larger vessels in this position and is now in the fifteenth position.

The history of the Serene

Yuri Shefler has entertained some of the wealthiest people in the world aboard the Serene. Bill Gates chartered the Serene for the cost of $5 million a week so he, Melinda and their three kids could enjoy some private family time together in August of 2014. They vacationed off of the coast of Porto Cervo, Sardinia, according to Boat International . This lavish yacht is the design of Espen Oeino, in charge of the exterior design, which offers a sleek profile. The interior is the creation of Reymond Langton Design.

Shefler was the first owner of the yacht, but he sold it to Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Saudi Arabian royalty in 2015 for the sum of 50 million Euros. Just two years after the purchase, there was an incident of concern involving the Serene. Due to propulsion failure and human error, the Serene ran aground in an area of the Red Sea notorious for shallow rock reefs. The hull at the bow was damaged requiring significant repairs. The incident took place in August.

The Serene was made available for charter by Shefler during the times that he wasn’t using it himself. This luxury yacht is absolutely packed with amenities. For starters, there is a helipad to allow guests to move to and from the yacht for land excursions as well as sightseeing from the air, or for going out for entertainment at some of the more exciting ports. For enjoying recreation in the water, there are also jet skis on board and there is also a submarine on board to get some fantastic views of the marine life and environment beneath the waves. This yacht is made for family fun for people of all ages. there is also a trans deck waterslide, a climbing wall, several swimming pools, a playroom, a snow room and a cinema for a night at the movies.

Adult amenities

The Serene is built with a total of six decks which allows for private times as well for group gatherings. There is a sun deck with a super large bathtub built in. The Serene also features an area that is designated as a private beach club, complete with a sauna and area for sunbathing. If you enjoy dancing there is also s sundeck dance floor, a wet bar, extra sun loungers, and two jacuzzis. There are also al fresco eating areas on the exterior. On the interior, the Serene features a Teppanyaki grill, a wood-fired pizza oven, a barbecue, and a wet bar. There is also an underwater observation lounge for relaxation and watching the marine life swim around the outside. For accommodations, the Serene has 12 staterooms, all designed for luxury living with a VIP Suite, a master suite, three twin cabins and seven double suites with room for up to 24. There is also a sky lounge and piano bar onboard with luxury furnishings for relaxation and cocktails. There is also a formal dining room with floor to ceiling windows placed in a manner that offers a panoramic view of the outside environment.

Final thoughts

The Serene is a privately owned yacht which has a major difference that sets it apart from most of the other superyachts in its category. This one has been offered for charter since the time of its purchase, off and one. Many of the other privately owned superyachts in its category are only available upon invitation, and the owners tend to be selective about who is invited to come aboard. This is good news for those who have the going rate of $5 million per week to pay the charter fee. The Serene is one of the most luxurious superyachts in operation with an onboard crew that ranges from 40 to 54 to meet your every need for great food and even formal dining, wet bar and cocktail lounge services, and plenty of activities to keep everyone in your party entertained and relaxed. What we found so incredible about this ship is that there is a little something for everyone, whether you’re into rock climbing, watching movies, playing water sports, swimming or going on an undersea adventure in the submarine that can dive up to 300 feet.

After Mike Lynch’s fatal yacht sinking, is Sicily still a yachting paradise?

Group of friends on a sailboat, enjoying a glass of wine at sunset

The Bayesian was moored around 300 meters off the coast of Porticello when it was struck by freak weather conditions last Monday and sank.

The boat had been carrying 22 people, 15 of whom were rescued and seven of whom died—including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch.

serene yacht besitzer

It was considered technologically advanced and had been restored four years ago. It is still unclear exactly how the yacht sank, but marine accident investigation teams have assessed the sunken vessel and have been reporting their findings.

Sicily has long been known as a sailing paradise with azure waters, underwater caves, warm, dry summers and relatively calm conditions.

But thanks to climate change, could more erratic weather patterns threaten the future of Sicily as a sailing destination?

The Mediterranean is warming

Initial hypotheses suggest a downburst played a role in capsizing the Bayesian.

Climate scientists are linking the freak weather event in Sicily to climate change and the warming Mediterranean sea.

According to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, these are “powerful winds that descend from a thunderstorm and spread out quickly once they hit the ground.”

Climate scientists are linking the freak weather event in Sicily to climate change and the warming Mediterranean sea. Waters have reached 30C, up three degrees from its average temperature, following two months of brutal heatwaves.

Warming waters have also contributed to more frequent episodes of exceptional weather.

“Occurrences of tornadoes or Mediterranean hurricanes have been increasing in frequency over the last 10 to 15 years,” Roberto Danavaro, a marine biologist at the University of Ancona, told the Guardian .

“And based on the high temperatures, we are likely to see more in September and October. The heat of this summer will not bring anything good.”

However, the captain of the Bayesian James Cutfield is also under investigation for possible manslaughter and culpable shipwreck.

“We didn’t see it coming.” Captain of the Bayesian, James Cutfield

The 51-year-old New Zealand national has been questioned by magistrates and will undergo further questioning this week, Italian daily La Repubblica reports.

Under Italian law, being placed under investigation doesn’t imply any guilt and doesn’t necessarily result in criminal charges.

News site ANSA also reports that other members of the crew are also likely to be investigated as prosecutors consider whether the sinking was caused by negligence or errors.

Cutfield told Italian press that the storm had taken them by surprise: “We didn’t see it coming.”

A crew member was on duty on the bridge during the night and was in possession of equipment to receive weather warnings. But images show that the rocket to signal an emergency was launched half an hour after the yacht began to sink.

“The crew should have checked that everything was closed.” Architect of the Bayesian, Franco Romani

The architect of the Bayesian, Franco Romani, told Italian newspaper La Stampa that the yacht was designed to withstand “all weather conditions.”

He believes the sinking was due to a side hatch being left open, which would have allowed water to enter below deck as the boat began to list.  “The crew should have checked that everything was closed,” he added.

serene yacht besitzer

Marine investigation teams have confirmed that the vessel remains intact underwater and the mast was not broken.

Is sailing under threat in Sicily?

The downburst appears to have hit a restricted area—with neighboring boats remaining unscathed—and formed very rapidly, meaning the crew had little time to prepare.

“As with many Mediterranean destinations, Sicily is subject to seasonal winds, including the Mistral (northwestern wind) and the Sirocco (southeastern wind), which can cause rapid changes in weather conditions,” says Raphael Sauleau, CEO of international yachting company IYC .

Eva de Wilde, who runs the yachting holiday company EcoSailors with her partner Pietro Paolo Vital, notes that end-of-season downbursts are getting more frequent as the sea warms.

“Very often the Mediterranean is seen as a calm pool but you always need to keep an eye on the weather forecast,” she says.

Yachting experts also say there is plenty you can do to improve safety and preparedness when sailing.

James Ballard, who captained superyachts for 25 years and is now CEO of House of Assets, says that anchorages are generally quite safe in Sicily but again, the wind is something to be aware of.

“If you are on the north coast [where the Bayesian was moored] for example you have a long way to get around to cover on the east side including going through the Messina strait,” Ballard says.

“Sailing always comes with risk so you have to be fully prepared, have researched where you are going and safe ports of call and that you have adequate safety equipment on board.” James Ballard, CEO of House of Assets.

His advice is to put out more anchor chains than you might normally when mooring.

“This means if the wind does pick up and you don’t have time to start the engines you have enough chain to hold the boat.” He also says it is essential to have someone on watch in the evenings.

“Sailing always comes with risk so you have to be fully prepared, have researched where you are going and safe ports of call and that you have adequate safety equipment on board,” he adds.

Both Sauleau and de Wilde emphasize that incidents like the sinking of the Bayesian in this region are not the norm.

“The sea, by its nature, can be unpredictable, and it’s crucial to adhere to all safety protocols, even under seemingly serene conditions,” Sauleau says. “But Sicily has long been a favored sailing destination with a history of few reported incidents.”

De Wilde says the extreme conditions that hit the Bayesian should not put people off sailing in the area.

“What happened to the Bayesian is something really uncommon,” she says. “When they explain exactly what happened we will all be able to learn from their experience and be even more prepared for an event like this.

“Sailing around Sicily you will discover this amazing region in a special and different way. Only a sailboat can offer you this particular experience,” she adds.
