Wednesday Night Regatta Returns on Lake Superior
DULUTH, Minn.– You know summer is almost here in Duluth now that the Duluth Yacht Club is back at its Wednesday night regatta out on Lake Superior.
Wednesday evening, dozens of sailboats took off from Park Point, crossing underneath the lift bridge and out through 10 miles of the Duluth Shipping Channel.
The sight from shore for a couple from Iowa was something they’ve never seen before.
“I think we were not expecting to see the number of sailboats that we saw,” said John Rizzi.
“A tremendous amount of boats and that’s pretty exciting. Very picturesque,” said his wife Joanne.
The sailboat races will continue every Wednesday night through September. The duluth Yacht Club was formed in 1969 and are looking for new members.

DSSA friends and members, we are sharing information regarding the loss of an original member, past president, and inspiring Scott Anderson.
Below is a tribute to scott.
Message from Jim Sharrow, Duluth Superior Sailing Association
We are saddened by Scott’s untimely passing and want to extend our deepest sympathy to his family, friends and associates.
Scott was a long-term leader in our community sailing program. We were formed in 1984 as a joint venture between Duluth Parks and Recreation and the 4H program. Scott became involved during this period and helped the program grow to include adaptive sailing for disabled persons. In the mid-1990s our organization incorporated into a 501 (c ) (3) non-profit organization that now operates as the Duluth Superior Sailing Association (DSSA). Scott was an early president of the association and was continuously active, supporting our adaptive sailing program up to his death. It was his desire that we establish a fund in his name to support adaptive sailing infrastructure as well as participation by disabled and disadvantaged sailors of all ages. The fund is named the Scott R. Anderson “sailing for all” Memorial Fund.
We encourage you to view the 4 minute Make a Hero- Adaptive Sailing video that features Scott. In it he relates his motto of playing with the cards he was dealt in life. He describes sailing as “you, the wind and water… That’s it; everything goes away.” His sailing wasn’t limited to participation in our adaptive sailing program that we accomplish in conjunction with the Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute. He was a member of our organization who has sailed often like any other member. He also participated with the Duluth Yacht Club for many years as part of the crew on a 33’ boat in the Wednesday night races on Lake Superior. Scott was an inspirational leader in many ways and will be greatly missed.

International vintage boat show takes to the waters of Gull Lake
The show, which is free and open to the public, culminates with the antique & classic boat society international boat show friday, sept. 13, and saturday, sept. 14, on gull lake..
LAKE SHORE — Don’t be surprised to see more than 150 vintage boats and thousands of spectators on the water and shores of Gull Lake this weekend.
The Antique & Classic Boat Society and the Bob Speltz Land O’ Lakes Boat Club returned to the Brainerd lakes area for Vintage Boat Week 2024, with boating tours taking place Monday, Sept. 9, through Wednesday and culminating with the ACBS International Boat Show Friday and Saturday on Gull Lake.
The last time the Vintage Boat Week was celebrated in the Brainerd lakes area was in 2015.
“We’re one of the few locations that has gotten it back within 10 years because everybody had such a great time last time,” said Bar Harbor owner John Allen, whose restaurant along with Zorbaz in Lake Shore, will be hosting the event. “The Brainerd lakes area here has really become the center of the classic antique boat world in the recent past.”
Allen said this year spectators will be treated to boats that have never been in Minnesota before, including boats that have set water records the past 100 years. He also noted a perennial anchor of local vintage boat shows, Lee Anderson’s collection, will also be part of the event and Anderson will be hosting a function at his museum in Nisswa.
“Lee holds a special spot for a lot of people because he was one of the early people collecting and preserving and promoting the visibility of classic and antique boats, not only locally but nationally,”Allen said. “A lot of the stature that this area enjoys in the classic boating world is because of people who were inspired by Lee as the catalyst in the collection of antique boats and the and the showing of antique boats.”
The public events will take place 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Allen said, and admission is free. He said the week has been built around guests arriving from out of the area, with 8,000 to 10,000 people expected between the two days. The popularity has been immense, Allen said, and he’s heard rooms at hotels and resorts have or are near selling out.
“People wanted to come back to Minnesota, because they had such a wonderful time the last time they were here,” Allen said.
The shows, Allen said, promise to deliver a slice of America’s history on the water from all eras.
“Our shows are floating mahogany moments of sentimentality and nostalgia of younger lives lived memorably on the lakes and rivers of America in the past, summers of love, youth and family,” Allen said.
