OCEAN ALEXANDER TODAY

Today the shipyard is under the management of Johnny Chueh, the son of founder Alex Chueh. Johnny continues the legacy of superior engineering, an approach rooted in the aerospace industry. Originally manufactured in their Kaohsiung factory located in Taiwan, today production has expanded to Merritt Island, Florida where the first 70 Evolution was manufactured. In their state-of-the-art facilities, OA uses Finite Element Analysis, to create virtual 3D modeling. Using this technology, they can anticipate any engineering complications, ensuring the highest quality build to each customer.

Ocean Alexander’s responsibility to their customers is visible. From the beginning of the build process to being an experienced yacht owner, their goal is to make every step of the way easy. By providing round the clock assistance for their yacht owners and hosting annual appreciation events around the world, owners know they are taken care of so they can focus on what matters most- enjoying their time on the water.

Origin Story: Birth of an Ocean Alexander

Origin Story: Birth of an Ocean Alexander

“Welcome,” the attendant responds with a smile and head nod. We half-mime a conversation for a few minutes and he points me in the right direction. I’m off, thankful for the English subtitles on most of the signs, and hop aboard my steed to the south.

Comfortable seats, clean, Wi-Fi… Seattle should take notice, I think to myself as Taiwan passes by the window. I review my notes for the upcoming tour with Alexander Marine Vice President Winnie Huang.

Ocean Alexander yachts, now formally a line under the Alexander Marine parent company, has a longtime connection with the Pacific Northwest that goes back decades. Founded by Taiwanese native Alexander Chueh in 1977, the company is now under the direction of his son, Johnny Chueh. The Pacific Northwest’s own Ed Monk Jr., son of the legendary early/mid-20th century boat designer and top-notch designer in his own right, put the brand on the map as the visionary of the entire Ocean Alexander line at the outset.

Ocean Alexander Construction

Ed Monk Jr.’s Ocean Alexander Mark 1 is a prime example of a classic OA look. First launched in 1978, the build was a trendsetter for motoryachts of the day as the quintessential blend of old-world seaworthiness with modern luxury amenities. Despite being built in Taiwan by a Taiwanese company, the Mark 1 looks undeniably Northwest and was made for that Puget Sound to Alaska (and beyond) long-distance, rugged cruise. If you want one, you can still find one today in immaculate condition. Just be prepared for sticker shock, for many go at three times the original listed price.

OA’s success was thanks to this uniquely Taiwan-Pacific Northwest bond, perhaps due to the motoryacht world’s positive response to similar contemporaneous trans-Pacific partnerships like the one pioneered by the famous Bob Perry and Cheoy Lee collaboration. It’s easy to imagine Perry, the spectacled Pacific Northwestern designer with pencil and paper in hand, meeting with entrepreneurial Taiwanese boatyard-owning personalities over a whiskey. I recently talked to Perry about his time in Taiwan.

“Taiwan is a fantastic place,” recalls Perry. “And the food? Best in the world. When we started out, a lot of people think we couldn’t pull it off.” A sideways grin. “We sure showed them.”

Ocean Alexander Construction

Today, although the OA brand has expanded from purely Ed Monk Jr. designs, many of those ties remain. Like many legacy brands, manufacturers seek to balance beloved designs with the need to innovate, and modern OA designs vary quite a bit from their traditional lines. The recent 70 Evolution (70E) and the newest 90R Enclosed and Open models are prime examples of clear aesthetic departures from classic OA builds.

After a good night’s rest in Kaohsiung, I leave the hotel lobby to meet Huang, who is there to pick me up in her car. After brief introductions and rehashing of my trip, we are across town and on the Alexander Marine factory grounds. Huang, a professional naval architect with years of formal training, is in her element.

“Taiwan has a very long history of boat building and shipping,” she explains to me.

Winnie Huang, vice president of Alexander Marine, has been working with the company for many years. A trained naval architect, Huang comes from a multigenerational maritime design family.

“There’s not a lot of women in maritime, but people like me are changing that.” Huang is proud of her family’s Taiwanese boat building heritage, as well as her two kids.

Winnie Huang

Alexander Marine owns four factories spread across Kaohsiung, each designated with their unique jobs (ex. tooling). Huang and I are exploring the assembling facility where it all comes together. The towering stalls shelter massive yachts in various phases of assembly. A brand-new OA 112 (112’ length overall) on jack stands is the star of the show, free of the assembly stalls and ready for sea trial.

“Before the boats are ready for sea trials, they spend time in our testing pool,” Huang gestures to the far end of the yard. A massive orange travel lift sits near a basketball court-sized pool of water. This kiddie pool of sorts serves as every OA’s first exposure to water after assembly. A motoryacht floats alone as Huang and I walk past. We enter the factory and pass gigantic stall after gigantic stall, each with a yacht under construction surrounded by scaffolding where dozens of people are hard at work with their trades.

Once inside, the factory doesn’t differ too much from boat factories the world over. We enter the wood shop where the fine trimmings take form. I’ve heard stories from back in the day where workers in Taiwan would spend nights aboard, carving ornate doors and the like over the course of days. I ask Huang about this, and she laughs.

“Where did you hear that? No, the workers here have normal eight-hour days with weekends like everywhere.” We hop aboard numerous builds, including one of the first 90Rs coming together. The beach bar built into the transom may someday host swanky cocktail parties right by the swim step, but right now a team of electricians are running wires. The boat is a dull gray, and unfinished. I snap a few shots and look forward to enjoying a 90R beach bar when it’s fully operational.

I pick Huang’s mind about the yacht building process. Every yacht starts as a twinkle in a client’s eye, and an OA is no exception. Most Ocean Alexander builds are semi-custom, and after a client expresses a desire to buy a yacht to their local dealer, details are hashed out for the order. If the preferred yacht is in stock with the desired options, the owner can motor away from the dock and that’s that. However, most buyers want their perfect boat, and that usually warrants a new hull.

Taiwan, officially the Republic of China (ROC), is an island state in East Asia with a fascinating history and culture. While the majority of the state is of Han Chinese decent, Taiwan was first under the control of its unique aboriginal population, then a series of Colonial powers, including the Chinese Qing Dynasty who ceded it to Japan in 1895, only for it to return to Chinese control after WWII. The subsequent Chinese Civil War led to the rise of the People’s Republic of China (PRC, which oversees mainland China today), with the previous non-communist ROC government fleeing to Taiwan in 1949. The result is a self-governing, democratic society in limbo with mainland China insisting Taiwan is under its sovereignty while many within Taiwan advocate for official independence.

Taiwan is a modern society with many attractions for visitors, in part thanks to a blend of influences. Taipei, the capital, has a world-renown foodie scene and an entire spa culture built upon a natural hot spring. Notably, Taiwan’s Kavalan Solist Vinho Barrique officially won the Best Single Malt Whiskey (2015) category by the World Whiskies Awards. With a climate similar to Hawaii and direct flights from Seattle and San Francisco, Taiwan is a tempting trip on most travelers’ lists.

Taiwan 101

Once the order is official, all four Kaohsiung facilities spring into action. A typical turnaround for a yacht is five or six months, and the OA team has decades of experience under their belts in making delivery.

Clients are welcome to visit the factory during the construction process and tweaks to the order are allowed within reason. In Huang’s experience, most owners just like to be in the loop. The culmination of it all is at the assembly factory where the hull comes together, systems are installed, and the yacht is polished to a fine sheen.

After a two-week dip in the test pool and countless systems and structural tests, the yacht is ready for its sea trial, conducted on the Taiwan coast. Once the sea trial goes well, the OA is loaded onto a container ship and delivered to its new home for a full life of recreational boating. Many OAs can be found cruising the emerald waters of the Pacific Northwest, like they have since the line’s inception.

After a full morning touring the factory and answering my questions, I feel honored that Huang hasn’t tired of me and instead invites me to lunch. We end up at a Japanese place built next to an elementary school, and kids in different colorful uniforms appear to be gathered for a track meet. Huang and I talk about boats, our families, and current events. We laugh; we listen. For a second, I’m not in Taiwan and there is no bald eagle on my passport. We are simply two human beings united by a deep-seated attraction to the sea, and all else is rendered irrelevant.

Not everything about these times of international trade and relations is stable, but I’m willing to bet that the boaters of the Pacific Northwest will have a soft spot for Ocean Alexanders for the years to come. When we work together, the remarkable becomes standard operating procedure. The waiter arrives, and the multi-course lunch of seafood fare that Huang ordered begins. We savor every bite.

This New 92-Foot Yacht Is Like a Motorcycle Cruiser for the High Seas

Once you move into superyacht territory, the interior design elements also prove critical differentiators. Ocean Alexander works closely with Italian furniture maker Poltrona Frau, one of the premier names in yacht and residential interior decor.

The Ocean Alexander 28E is a 92-foot yacht that has most of the features of a superyacht.

That partnership is critical for defining the interiors of the Ocean Alexander brand, says Evan K. Marshall, the yacht’s designer. “Some of the furniture, like the sectional sofa in the salon, we design ourselves and send to Poltrona Frau, and other pieces, like the coffee table, are all theirs,” he says. “They bring a level of quality, with fabrics and leathers and stitching, that can’t really be matched by in-house designers at a yacht company. Let me put it this way, you’re not going to find an in-house [yacht furniture] designer with a showroom on Rodeo Drive.”

But the exterior is equally megayacht. The “E” in this yacht’s name stands for “explore,” a reference to the model’s focus on connecting with the marine environment. The 28E’s extended transom area is designed for owners who like to swim, dive, fish, and use water toys. There is plenty of space to transport a tender and jet skis. Teak-soled terraces on either side, another hallmark of a larger yacht, fold out to turn it into a proper beach club.

The 28E also comes with a Jacuzzi on the aft end of its bridge deck, and a two-tiered lounge area on the foredeck, with sunpads and a dining settee. These will allow privacy when docked stern-to.

Perhaps the most admirable superyacht feature is the sky lounge, which has three seats in front at the helm, Poltrona Frau furniture aft along the port side, and an ornate cabinet running the length of the room. These turn what is typically a mundane pilothouse into an elegant social area.

All of these features are combined in a muscular, handsome package. The 28E’s axe bow has a familiar explorer look, while its dark glazing set against a white superstructure and hull create a pleasingly modern profile.

In a relatively compact package, it’s a great introduction for owners moving from a top-tier motoryacht to megayacht level, where the details matter.

The 28E will be on display at the Miami Yacht Show in February.

Meet the fast-selling 37m superyacht designed for ‘real life’

Stealing the show has become something of a habit for Ocean Alexander , and so it proved again at Fort Lauderdale last October.

During the show, the high-profile boatbuilder debuted three brand-new models and expanded its range of top-selling 25 to 37-metre yachts. One of these was the meticulously crafted 35.9-metre flagship, Ocean Alexander 37L. The first unit of the new 37L is already with her owner, and hull number two is in the pipeline. Demand for Ocean Alexander yachts is at an all-time high, securing the company’s position as one of the leading brands for large yachts in the US.

To launch an Ocean Alexander with a worthy Legend flagship status, the family-owned business worked to perfect its semi-custom platform. To do so, the builder advanced its slightly smaller 36L model by taking its long-established alliance with Evan K. Marshall to unprecedented levels. The result is a yacht that caters to a private, luxurious and entertaining life at sea.

Having established the yacht’s low-profile lines, the team “imagined brilliant ways to utilise space, create innovative privacy solutions and provide functional living spaces for the most discerning owners and their guests,” says Sally Doleski, Ocean Alexander’s Vice President of Marketing. The open-plan interior layout features rich materials and elegant decor with surprising details engineered throughout, such as floor-to-ceiling glass panelling, silent electric doors and automatic window blinds. “The design perfectly combines features that are both cutting-edge and timeless,” Doleski adds.

The four decks have been designed to reflect how owners and their guests like to use a yacht. Entering the main saloon is a seamless experience through powered doors that glide open at the touch of a button, inviting guests into an airy, light-filled space for entertaining and relaxing. The contemporary furniture comes with some clever design hacks: the flat-screen television floats down from the ceiling, and the custom cabinetry made from exotic wood offers plenty of storage space.

In keeping with the interior’s open-plan layout, the dining table for 10 is flanked by large sliding glass doors that connect all elements of the wraparound main deck. Continuing forward, a spacious high-grade galley is fitted with stone counters and floors, a wine cooler and ample provisions storage for long journeys. Dubbed “the chef’s space”, it is more than twice the size of a comparable yacht to fit in the stainless-steel appliances required for a professional cook. The team agreed that having full-size equipment such as American Sub-Zero refrigerators are the best amenities for provisions, long journeys and special occasions that require professional-standard catering.

As designer Evan K. Marshall puts it, the yacht has been given a “true penthouse apartment feel”, and so completing the main deck is the master suite. Encased in forward-facing large windows, the suite has motorised shades for privacy at the push of a button. On the lower deck, the staterooms have the flexibility for two of the rooms to be joined together to create one large room for four.

Thanks to the optimisation of the space on the lower deck, there is room for extra utilities such as a double washer/dryer, ironing board, and a set of freezers to enhance the yacht’s appeal as a floating hotel made to suit ‘real living’.

Even more utilities can be found on the upper aft deck. A sink, refrigerator, icemaker and stainless-steel electric grill promotes the space into a five-star luxury hangout for both day and night, particularly as the sky deck’s oversized Jacuzzi is just a few steps away. To be closer to the ocean, guests will find that the foldout deck transforms the aft beach club into a personal oasis and houses a bar, television, comfortable seating, air conditioning and sound system.

On the engineering side, every Ocean Alexander yacht is fitted with an OctoPlex system to control all of the AC and DC loads and is one of the most sophisticated systems on the market. When the yacht is in use the noisier parts of the boat – such as the galley and engine room – have been taken care of. Ocean Alexander sought the expertise of Gregory Marshall and the yard’s in-house naval architect experts and interior designer Evan K. Marshall to engineer solutions to keep the yacht running silently, so all that can be heard is the surrounding ocean. Plus, the engine room is not only modelled to be beautiful, accessible and functional, but is served by an extra-safe air intake system that can withstand any sea condition.

These are just some of the underlying design features that are making the Ocean Alexander 37L such a tempting proposition for yacht buyers. For those who prefer to see it for themselves, arrangements can be made to visit the yacht in Florida from April 2022 by contacting Ocean Alexander directly here.

Ocean Alexander’s Ocean-Crossing 32 Legend

  • By Chris Caswell
  • Updated: August 12, 2021

Ocean Alexander 32L

I noted the Ocean Alexander 32L’s gentle, sweeping curve from bow to stern. The look reminded me of what I’d seen in the pages of Yachting during my youth, when designers such as Phil Rhodes, Sparkman & Stephens, Bill Garden, Alden, and others drew gently curving classic sheers. Ocean Alexander’s new 105-footer continues the tradition.

The L in 32L stands for “legend,” which is apropos because this yacht is a tribute to the builder’s more than 40 years of yachtbuilding experience. That experience comes through in the details. For example, opening the nearly 6-foot-wide sliding doors on each side of the salon creates a pleasant cross breeze at the dining table, which also offers sole-to-ceiling vistas. Cut-down bulwarks open the view from the salon as well. The feeling is open and airy in the salon, from the sliding doors to the aft deck to the forward bulkhead, with help from nearly 7-foot headroom.

The galley is just forward of the salon, with double-door Sub-Zeros, a full-height wine chiller and wraparound marble counters. There’s also a side-deck door for crew access, to eliminate passing through guest areas during service.

Ocean Alexander 32L

Far forward, past a day head, is the main-deck master stateroom, with sweeping panoramas on three sides. The mullions are small, leaving room for the big views.

Four guest staterooms are off the central foyer belowdecks, each with windows and opening ports for air and vistas. Each stateroom is en suite with stall showers and marble appointments.

The 32L I got aboard had an optional sky lounge, with the bridge deck divided between a fully enclosed forward entertaining area and an alfresco lounge aft. Besides having a twin-pedestal helm, the sky lounge creates a “second salon” with windows on all four sides. A wet bar, TV and day head share space with twin sofas and an easy chair that begs for a favorite read to be savored. Outside are a dining table and a bar with three fixed stools. Adding to the amenities are a grill and whirlpool spa.

The foredeck is also a getaway space for guests, with sun lounges and a table for enjoying sundowners. The aft deck has a raised dinette space that’s protected from the sun. With the twin tables, this is where I would enjoy most meals.

Ocean Alexander 32L

There is no “upstairs-downstairs” layout for the crew on the 32L. They have three cabins and a full mess with a galley. In addition to the usual door to the transom, the crew also has a safe entry from the cockpit while the yacht is underway.

Power on the 32L is a pair of 1,900 hp MAN V-12 diesels, and the engine room should be on every tour. With a pair of 40 kW Kohler gensets tucked in the corners, it is, quite simply, clean and organized. The engine room is gloss-finished for easy cleaning, all the systems are readily accessible, pipes and wiring are labeled, and service techs will have the necessary space.

The builder says that MANs typically push the 32L to a top speed of 23 knots, but running on an unruly and lumpy Gulf Stream, our speeds were closer to the cruise speed of 20 knots at 80 percent of rated revolutions per minute, which should mean these diesels have a long life span. Drop the speed back to 10 knots, and the 32L has transoceanic range of 3,496 nautical miles.

Ocean Alexander 32L

The weather was challenging when I was aboard, but the 32L was seakindly, shouldering away seas with a comfortable motion in all directions. By all directions, I mean not just into swells or down-sea (which most yachts can handle) but also beam-to. The yacht’s standard Side-Power Vector Fin stabilizers helped, but a large part of the comfort, I suspect, was due to the builder keeping the weight low with high-density closed-cell structural foam, which also reduces sound levels. Fiberglass-infusion lamination with carbon fiber is used in high-stress areas. The Side-Power setup also provides zero-speed stabilization at anchor. Ocean Alexander finishes all the exterior surfaces with Alexseal paint for longer gloss retention and easier maintenance.

While it was the 32L’s lovely sheerline that captured me at first, the solid build and outfitting helped me fully understand why the boat is part of the Legend line.
