The 61.8m/202'9" motor yacht 'RoMa' by the Italian shipyard Viareggio SuperYachts offers flexible accommodation for up to 12 guests in 6 cabins and features interior styling by Newcruise.

Offering an abundance of social and dining options, as well as a highly attentive crew, luxury charters aboard motor yacht RoMa are set to be truly magical whatever the destination. She has sensational features such as wheelchair accessibility, movie theatre, elevator and gym.

Guest Accommodation

Built in 2010, RoMa offers guest accommodation for up to 12 guests in 6 suites comprising a master suite, four double cabins and one twin cabin. There are 7 beds in total, including 1 king, 4 queen and 2 singles. She is also capable of carrying up to 17 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht charter experience.

Onboard Comfort & Entertainment

Keeping comfortable and entertained on RoMa is easy thanks to the available amenities, particularly a dedicated library, where you can unwind in seclusion. Guests love watching a movie, or catching up on their favourite show or sporting event whenever they wish in the comfortable movie theatre. Take a plunge in the pool under the sun and in addition maintain your fitness routine and work out in the well-equipped gym.

RoMa benefits from some excellent features to improve your charter, particularly wheelchair-friendly access, making this vessel suitable for all guests. Travelling from deck to deck is quick, easy and accessible with the on-board elevator and in addition guests will experience complete comfort while chartering thanks to air conditioning.

Performance & Range

RoMa is built with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure. Powered by twin Caterpillar engines, she comfortably cruises at 14 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 17 knots with a range of up to 6,000 nautical miles from her 158,000 litre fuel tanks at 12 knots. RoMa features at-anchor stabilizers providing exceptional comfort levels.

Onboard RoMa has a large selection of toys and accessories to keep you and your guests entertained on the water throughout your stay. Principle among these is a Flyboard for soaring over the water or swimming like a dolphin. Additionally, there is a waterslide letting guests speed from the sun deck to the water in seconds. Take to the sea on the Jet Skis offering you power and control on the water. If that isn't enough RoMa also features waverunners, towable toys, scuba diving equipment, a seabob, kayaks and much more. When it comes to Tenders, RoMa has you covered - with two tenders, including a 16.8m/55'1" Anvera Chase Tender.

RoMa and her crew are available for charter this summer for cruising within the Mediterranean. She is also accepting bookings this winter on request.

La Costa Smeralda offre spiagge e isole uniche, ma anche luoghi da jet set come la mitica Porto Cervo. Il litorale è caratterizzato dalla presenza di numerose calette, piccole spiagge, ed è poco distante da numerose isole dell'arcipelago della Maddalena come Cappuccini, Bisce, Li Nibani, Mortorio, Le Camere e Soffi. Partendo da Porto Cervo la prima tappa da vedere è Spargi, la terza isola più grande del parco nazionale dell'arcipelago, accompagnata dalla '~sorella' Spargiotto, dove nidificano specie rare di uccelli. Prossima tappa Spiaggia Rosa situata a Budelli, Patrimonio dell'UNESCO, è d'obbligo per un tuffo nelle acque azzurre del Manto della Madonna , una piscina naturale composta da tre isole: Budelli, Razzoli e Santa Maria. Si prosegue poi per l'isola di La Maddalena, l'isola principale dell'omonimo arcipelago. All'Isola della Maddalena, si può mangiare in fantastici ristoranti e bar, offre un'ampia scelta di negozi di artigianato sardo. 

Costa Smeralda

Pevero Bay, Romazzino, Capriccioli, Cala di Volpe/Liscia Ruja, island of Mortorio, Soffi Nibani, Le Camere (natural swimming-pool)

La Sardegna offre luoghi di impressionante bellezza, più o meno nascosti, che sta solo a noi andare a scoprire. Una delle zone più belle di quest'isola è sicuramente la Costa Smeralda ambita meta turistica sin dagli anni sessanta, che regala spiagge e isole uniche. Una delle baie più conosciute ed apprezzate è Cala Volpe, La Celvia, Liscia Ruja, tutte protette dal promontorio di Capriccioli e con una sabbia bianca finissima con riflessi rosa proprio a ridosso della battigia. Da qui si può poi raggiungere l'isola di Mortorio, un isolotto ricco di calette e spiagge rocciose molto particolari dove fare il bagno in una vera e propria piscina naturale.

Tra le bellezze del Nord Sardegna nel Sud della Corsica, il tour parte da Porto Cervo che si sviluppa attorno ad un profondo porto naturale, per navigare su diverse isole. La prima è  Lavezzi,  in mezzo alle Bocche di Bonifacio, un piccolo paradiso che nasce dal contrasto cromatico tra il turchese e l'azzurro delle sue acque cristalline e le sfumature pastello delle rocce granitiche, modellate dal vento e dal mare. Seguiranno l'Isolotto di Ratino, Isola Piana, la più vicina alla terraferma, circondata da spiagge paradisiache e si affaccia sulla graziosa spiaggia di Piantarella.; Isola Sperduto, Isola Cavallo. Se il mare lo permette, potremmo arrivare al Porto di Bonifacio, situato nel cuore di una paradisiaca e unica Riserva Naturale dello Stretto di Bonifacio che ospita delfini e tartarughe marine.

Un parco marino protetto che arriva

fino a Punta la Guardia

Le bellezze del Nord Sardegna sono infinite. Da Porto Cervo scopriamo Molara un'isola della Sardegna nord-orientale che costituisce, insieme all'isola di Tavolara, Molarotto, la penisola di Punta Coda Cavallo e altri scogli minori, un parco marino protetto di natura granitica che arriva fino a Punta la Guardia. Il toponimo, di attestazione medievale, è probabilmente dovuto alla forma tondeggiante e uniforme dell'isola, simile a una ruota. Prima di rientrare alla base è necessario fare una sosta nei ristoranti dell'isola di Tavolara e sorseggiare un buon bicchiere di vino davanti ad una zuppa di pesce indimenticabile.

Per visitare un angolo di paradiso, vi portiamo a Thaiti, un posto da sogno, proprio qui in Sardegna! Partendo da Porto Cervo, la prima tappa è Cala Coticcio, conosciuta anche come Tahiti per la sua sabbia finissima e il mare turchese contornato da rocce rosa. Prossime baie è Cala Napoletana, un vero paradiso di sabbia bianca, acque limpide e macchia mediterranea, Isola dei Giardinelli, collegata a La Maddalena.

Come ogni estate l’Italia è presa d’assalto anche dai turisti più facoltosi a caccia di luoghi iconici ed esperienze nuove. Il borsino delle richieste 2024 vede un incremento di domande di visite culturali notturne con gli scavi di Pompei in cima (come fa la cantante Madonna),

meno cucina gourmet o stellata, più ricette fatte in casa (imparando a rifarle), passione per le eco farm (totalmente autosufficienti e che impiegano energie rinnovabili), richiesta di mega yacht, hotel di lusso e ville private. E’ inoltre esploso questo anno il foraging. Amatissimo dal turismo di altissimo livello, è un modo diverso di cucinare, recuperando le tradizioni del passato e le erbe selvatiche della penisola. Foraging vuol dire passeggiare raccogliendo bacche, fiori ed erbe commestibili seguiti da esperti botanici, per poi cimentarsi nella preparazione di piatti a base di ciò che è stato raccolto. Non manca la ricerca di adrenalina con i ‘voli’ in modalità zipline appesi a cavi d’acciaio sospesi sulla costiera amalfitana.

L’Italia questo anno è stata scelta per le vacanze di super ricchi, come Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates e Bernard Arnault, oltre a Lerry Ellison e Mark Zuckenberg. Seguiti da Leonardo DiCaprio, Kevin Costner, Jennifer Lopez, Harry Styles, Katy Perry, Margot Robbie, Robert De Niro e Madonna.  Ecco le destinazioni e le esperienze  più richieste per vivere il ‘sogno italiano’ .

 “L’Italia ha un’identità molto forte a livello globale. È entrata a far parte dell’immaginario collettivo, e visitarla significa rendere reale un sogno. Questo vale per tutti, anche per le celebrities, - spiega Fulvio De Bonis, Ceo e founder di Imago Artis Travel, luxury travel company con servizi di livello sartoriale e tra le principali società scelte dalle celebrities per costruire le loro vacanze nella penisola. - Negli anni abbiamo capito che ciò che più desiderano i clienti più facoltosi è vivere il sogno italiano dall’interno. Ad esempio vogliono entrare in contatto con la cultura locale, perché sanno che la vera esclusività non è legata al valore materiale delle esperienze che faranno, ma alle emozioni che proveranno”.

Oltre alla Sardegna e alle sue acque cristalline, tra le destinazioni di lusso più richieste Imago Artis Travel segnala le due aree costiere più iconiche ovvero la Riviera di Levante in Liguria, con Portofino e le Cinque Terre, e la Costiera Amalfitana. “Anche La Toscana è in vetta alle preferenze, per via della concentrazione sul territorio di attrattive ormai entrate nell’immaginario di chi desidera visitare l’Italia. - spiega De Bonis. - Si comincia con Firenze e Pisa – patria di musei e monumenti cruciali nella storia dell’arte – per approdare a Siena, San Gimignano e alla campagna toscana, con il sempreverde Chianti ma anche la Val d’Orcia, aree di riferimento per le esperienze enogastronomiche, tra vino, olio, tartufo, pecorino. La Puglia ed in particolare la Valle d’Itria sono da qualche anno sulla mappa del turismo di lusso. In aumento questo anno la popolarità di Pompei”.

In linea con l’attenzione diffusa del turismo di lusso verso le pratiche sostenibili, il rispetto dell’ambiente e la riscoperta del mondo naturale, questo anno si rivela molto gettonata l' Eco-Farm nel cuore del parco di Portofino , totalmente autosufficiente dove si segure il ciclo produttivo del vino, dell’olio, del miele e si impara a realizzare i prodotti  tipici liguri, come la focaccia e il pesto.  Sul Lago di Como sta prendendo inoltre piede la pratica del foraging , cioè la raccolta delle erbe selvatiche da fare in prima persona seguiti da un esperto botanico, per poi cimentarsi nella preparazione di piatti a base di ciò che hanno raccolto. 

In tema di cooking class, ad esempio in Costiera, il trend continua ad essere la riscoperta della cucina di casa, che anche gli ospiti Vip tendono a preferire e a richiedere molto più della cucina gourmet o stellata. “Vogliono imparare le ricette semplici, quelle che fanno parte della nostra cultura e ci rendono famosi nel mondo. La pizza e il gelato sono sicuramente protagonisti delle lezioni di cucina più richieste, ma l’attenzione – oltre che per il prodotto – è per l’insegnante: ci è capitato che una nota attrice ci chiedesse di portare una vera nonna a cucinare a domicilio nella sua villa nella campagna toscana” precisa De Bonis. 

Molto richieste inoltre le barche private per esplorare le nostre coste e i nostri laghi, talvolta in versione vintage, con imbarcazioni che hanno fatto la storia del design nautico, come Riva e Cranchi. i capricci dei super ricchi in vacanza in Italia includono anche esperienze più attive, per chi ama l’outdoor e l’adrenalina. Spiega De Bonis: “Recentemente un’altra celebrity ha voluto provare il brivido della zipline, ‘volando’ sospesa lungo un cavo d’acciaio tra Furore e Conca dei Marini”. Tra le preferenze di alloggi, quando non dispongono di uno yacht i super ricchi scelgono hotel e resort 5 stelle oppure affittano ville. Non mancano le richieste di ‘shopping experience ad hoc’.

Ecco lo yacht di Bernard Arnault, ecologico e ricchissimo d'arte

L'uomo più ricco del mondo e amministratore delegato di LVHM non ha certo badato a spese.

Symphony, l'assurdo yacht di Bernard Arnault

Chi è il proprietario del Symphony?

Arnault, francese classe 1949, è l'amministratore delegato del principale Polo del lusso a livello globale: LVMH . Il gruppo comprende brand come Loro Piana, Vuitton , Sephora, Bulgari e Pinarello . Solo per citarne alcuni. Da qui, insomma, viene il suo enorme patrimonio personale che ammonta a oltre 200 miliardi di euro .

Quanto vale lo yacht di Bernard Arnault

Se consideriamo la ricchezza di Arnault allora lo yacht Symphony, del valore stimato di circa 150 milioni di dollari , è poca cosa. Ipoteticamente, se Arnault decidesse di spendere il suo intero patrimonio in yacht come questo, potrebbe comprarne ben 1300 yacht come questo . E avere così un'intera flotta.

Symphony è a dir poco spettacolare già a vederlo dall'esterno: un enorme scafo in acciaio con una forma slanciata ed elegantissima , un colore che alterna il blu e il bianco, una grande piscina esterna sul ponte inferiore a poppa, un beach club, spazi esterni immensi con addirittura scivoli e altri giochi d'acqua che trasformano lo yacht in un parco giochi.

Non solo, sul Symphony c'è anche un ponte privato per il proprietario e interni di puro lusso, con spazi ampi e un'importante collezione d'arte (Arnault è noto per essere un collezionista di spicco).

Come scrive il sito SuperYachtfan il Symphony ha pochissimi paragoni nel mondo . Parliamo di una specie di palazzo di lusso galleggiante, con interni progettati da Zuretti Interior Design e - in assoluto - il progetto di Feadship dalle dimensioni più importanti.

Uno yacht ecosostenibile?

Oltre agli interni, l'arte, i grandi ponti in legno e le piscine lo yacht Symphony ha un'altra caratteristica: l'ecosostenibilità . Parliamo, infatti, di un' imbarcazione ibrida . Il motore principale funziona insieme a una serie di batterie la cui energia è accumulata elettricamente. Circa il 30% del movimento dello yacht è alimentato da energia pulita , e non da carburante fossile.

Il disastro dello yacht Bayesian affondato a Palermo: le possibili cause e le questioni irrisolte

La barca a vela di lusso Bayesian è affondata per via del forte maltempo al largo di Palermo, provocando almeno 6 vittime tra cui il miliardario Mike Lynch. Analizziamo le possibili dinamiche del disastro e com'era fatto lo yacht italiano, costruito dalla Perini Navi, con l'albero in alluminio più alto al mondo.

All’alba del 19 agosto 2024 al largo di Porticello (PA), lo yacht Bayesian è affondato con a bordo 22 persone a causa del forte maltempo, e al momento sono in corso le ispezioni sul relitto a 49 metri di profondità . Di queste, 15 sono state tratte in salvo e 6 hanno perso la vita, tra cui il miliardario britannico Mike Lynch , la figlia Hannah Lynch e lo chef della nave Recaldo Thomas . Nella serata del 20 agosto si è svolto l'interrogatorio al comandante del Bayesian, il neozelandese James Catfield , durante il quale sono emersi nuovi elementi che possono aiutarci a chiarire le concause che hanno portato all'affondamento dello yacht. Al momento sembra emergere un quadro in cui si sommano diversi fattori, in particolare la chiglia mobile non completamente stesa , un boccaporto lasciato aperto con possibile ingresso d'acqua e la mancata attivazione del sistema di sicurezza che avrebbe dovuto sigillare lo yacht. A contribuire il carattere violento e improvviso del probabile fenomeno meteorologico di downburst che si stava abbattendo con raffiche di vento molto intense su quella zona della Sicilia, che non avrebbe dato il tempo alle persone nel Bayesian di evitare il disastro.

Come era fatto lo yacht Bayesian

Il Bayesian era uno yacht a vela e a motore battente bandiera inglese. Era lungo 56 metri , largo 11,5 metri e con un albero in alluminio alto ben 75 metri , il più alto al mondo di questo tipo. Il mezzo è stato progettato dall’architetto navale Ron Holland e costruito dall’italiana Perini Navi, è stato varato nel 2008 a Viareggio e ristrutturato nel 2020.

Lo scafo è realizzato in alluminio, così come la sua sovrastruttura, e sotto lo scafo è presente una chiglia mobile, cioè una struttura che aiuta a dare stabilità alla barca offrendo resistenza all’acqua. A seconda dell’inclinazione della chiglia, il pescaggio (cioè la parte che resta immersa in acqua della nave) può andare da un minimo di 4 metri circa a un massimo di 9,8 metri circa .

A bordo della barca c’è spazio per 22 persone , cioè 12 ospiti e 10 membri dell’equipaggio. Il giorno del disastro la nave era al completo: a bordo infatti era presente il miliardario britannico Mike Lynch , soprannominato il “ Bill Gates britannico ” che, assieme alla famiglia, aveva organizzato un viaggio-premio per i suoi collaboratori. Infatti lui a giugno era stato assolto da 15 capi d’accusa per frode .

La causa del naufragio della barca a vela: probabilmente un downburst

La notte del 19 agosto 2024 il Bayesian si trovava in rada a circa 300 metri dal porto di Porticello , in provincia di Palermo. Attorno alle 04:00 del mattino però l’area inizia ad essere colpita da una violenta ondata di maltempo, e questo lo possiamo vedere chiaramente anche dalle immagini catturate da alcune telecamere di sorveglianza.

La zona è stata colpita da un temporale molto forte, con piogge intense ma soprattutto raffiche di vento violentissime. I testimoni sul luogo parlano di una possibile una tromba d’aria , ipotesi che non si può escludere anche se sembra più probabile un downburst , cioè una fortissima corrente d’aria localizzata che precipita direttamente dalla nube temporalesca e si schianta al suolo a velocità che possono anche sfiorare i 200 km/h . La cosa certa è che la barca si è trovata in un “frullatore” di correnti ascensionali e discensionali a velocità elevatissime.

La cosa interessante è che a 100 metri di distanza c’era un’altra nave, la Sir Robert Baden Powell battente bandiera olandese, che però non ha avuto particolari problemi. Ma come è possibile? Beh non dobbiamo stupirci, perché sia i downburst che le trombe d’aria possono benissimo provocare danni ingenti qui e non fare nulla a 100 metri di distanza.

Le ipotesi sulla dinamica dell'affondamento.

Grazie alle immagini di una vicina camera di sorveglianza possiamo vedere che alle 4:30 del mattino lo yacht in pochissimo tempo è affondato: nell’arco di appena un minuto vediamo l’albero inclinarsi sempre di più fino a sparire completamente sotto il pelo dell’acqua. L’equipaggio ha avuto comunque avuto il tempo per sparare un razzo di segnalazione . Inizialmente è accorsa la Sir Robert Baden Powell per offrire i primi soccorsi, e di lì a poco è intervenuta anche la Guardia Costiera e i Vigili del Fuoco .

A due giorni di distanza dal naufragio non ci sono ancora certezze sull’esatta dinamica del disastro e su cosa possa averlo causato. In un primo momento si è pensato che il maltempo avesse spezzato l’albero della nave , sbilanciando così l’intera struttura. I sommozzatori però hanno trovato l’albero ancora intatto e attaccato alla nave, quindi questa eventualità è stata scartata. Facciamo quindi una panoramica delle ipotesi a cui sta lavorando la procura di Termini Imerese e che sono state presentate da esperti del settore in questi due giorni.

L'ipotesi al momento più probabile è che la chiglia mobile dello yacht non fosse completamente estesa . La chiglia mobile infatti serve, un po’ come una vela fa con l’aria, a offrire resistenza all’acqua mantenendo in equilibrio l’imbarcazione. Quando la chiglia è dispiegata la barca è più stabile, mentre quando è sollevata lo è meno . La chiglia potrebbe non essere stata abbassata per mancanza di tempo, visto che i downburst sono fenomeni che arrivano senza preavviso, oppure per un guasto tecnico, o ancora per un errore decisionale da parte del comandante.

Dall'interrogatorio a Catfield è emerso inoltre che un boccaporto dello yacht potrebbe essere rimasto aperto, il che avrebbe consentito l'ingresso di acqua nell'imbarcazione, destabilizzandola. Questo effettivamente spiegherebbe come ha fatto il Bayesian ad affondare in modo così rapido.

Altre possibili cause o concause di cui si sta discutendo sono la resistenza offerta dal grande albero dell'imbarcazione , che ne avrebbe causato il ribaltamento anche con le vele chiuse, e un malfunzionamento o una mancata attivazione del sistema di sicurezza . Si è anche ipotizzato un impatto con la vicina secca delle Formiche , anche se al momento sembra un'ipotesi improbabile.

Tutte queste possibilità non si escludono e potrebbero essersi verificate in concomitanza l'una all'altra. Occorre attendere lo svolgimento delle indagini per avere un quadro certo della dinamica dell'incidente.

Le teorie del complotto sul naufragio del Bayesian

Uno dei motivi per cui la vicenda sta suscitando tanto interesse nel web e anche nei media internazionali è legato non tanto alla dinamica del disastro in sé ma al principale passeggero dello yacht, cioè Mike Lynch. Come già detto, Lynch stava festeggiando con i suoi collaboratori l’assoluzione da 15 capi d’accusa per frode. Durante questa causa era co-imputato anche Stephen Chamberlain, vice di Lynch ed ex-top manager dell’azienda informatica Autonomy , e poche ore dopo il naufragio si è appreso che Chamberlain era appena morto in Inghilterra dopo essere stato investito da un’auto lo scorso sabato sera.

Questa coincidenza sta dando adito a teorie di ogni tipo, per esempio che le due morti siano collegate e non siano state accidentali. Al momento però non esistono prove che possano correlare in modo certo i due eventi.

Ricordiamo sempre che in casi come questo, soprattutto quando ci sono delle persone che purtroppo hanno perso la vita, stabilire cos’è successo e perché è solamente compito delle autorità competenti .

Prosecutors open manslaughter investigation into sunken superyacht

TERMINI IMERSE, Italy — Prosecutors said there "could be a question of manslaughter" as they opened an investigation into the deaths of seven people after a superyacht sank while anchored off the Sicilian coast Monday.

Speaking at a press conference, prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio said the investigation is not currently directed at any individuals, and is looking into “the crime of culpable shipwreck and multiple manslaughter."

"But we are only at an early stage," Cartosio said. "Developments in the investigation could be of any kind, and we are not ruling anything out.”

Twenty-two people were onboard the 184-foot Bayesian when a sudden and violent storm struck before dawn on Monday, Aug. 19. Divers embarked on a challenging rescue operation, r e covering se ven bodies from the wreckage. The vessel was anchored about a half-mile offshore when it sank, leaving divers to search its hull on the seabed 164 feet underwater.

There were 15 survivors, including all but one of the ship's crew.

Cartosio said that the sinking could have been caused by "behaviors that were not in order."

Taking questions from reporters, prosecutors asked about the crew's responsibilities said they were “concentrating on this particular aspect,” adding they wanted to “discover how much they knew and to what extent all the people were warned.”

They said that the passengers who died were probably asleep, and that this is the reason they failed to escape.

Prosecutors also confirmed that the captain of the Bayesian will undergo more questioning. New Zealander James Cutfield has already been questioned for more than two hours, and prosecutors said he had been "extremely cooperative."

The prosecutor said that there was no legal obligation for the captain, crew and passengers to remain in Italy, but expected them to "cooperate fully" in the investigation.

Bad weather was forecast ahead of the sinking, and questions about the weather were also raised by journalists.

“Apart from extreme events which are being verified by the prosecutor, there was a great deal of visibility,” an official said according to a translation by Sky News, NBC's partner network in the U.K.

Based on forecasts from midnight to 4 a.m. on the Monday that the ship sank, he added that “there wasn’t anything to suggest there could be an extreme situation arising."

The  accounts of survivors that have emerged through the Italian medics who treated them  have suggested the sinking took place in mere minutes and came as a shock.

Prosecutor Raffaele Cammarano added that “The investigation, which will be based on the recovery and then on the analysis of the wreck, will allow us to obtain answers to questions that remain unknown.”

The body of British tech magnate Mike Lynch — regularly described in U.K. media as “Britain’s Bill Gates” — was among those recovered from the wreck. His 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, was the last to be found after the five-day rescue operation.

The others casualties were Lynch’s associates and their partners, including one of the lawyers who had successfully defended him in a blockbuster U.S. fraud trial earlier this summer: Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International and the British insurance firm Hiscox, and his wife, Judy; and a well-known New York City defense attorney, Christopher Morvillo, and his wife, Neda.

The body of Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian Antiguan national who was the ship’s cook, was recovered shortly after the accident.

Prosecutors said that autopsies had not yet been done.

Manslaughter probe announced in Sicily yacht wreck that killed 7

I talian authorities are opening an investigation into whether the sinking of the luxury yacht Bayesian, which killed seven people including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, was manslaughter.

Prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio said Saturday that the investigation is not targeting specific individuals so far, but that it was "plausible" that the crimes of manslaughter or causing a shipwreck through negligence were committed.

The Bayesian went down off the port of Porticello, near Sicily's capital of Palermo, after an unexpected storm early Monday morning. Fifteen people, including Lynch's wife and the owner of the yacht Angela Bacares, were rescued from the water.

A frantic search of the water and the sunken vessel ultimately recovered the bodies of seven people over the next few days: Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter Hannah; lawyer Christopher Morvillo, an American, and his wife Neda Morvillo; Morgan Stanley executive Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy Bloomer; and Recaldo Thomas, who was the ship's chef. Lynch had recently been acquitted in a fraud trial in the U.S.; Christopher Morvillo was one of his lawyers and Jonathan Bloomer served as a character witness on Lynch's behalf.

Investigation underway to find out how yacht sank

Investigators will pull the sunken ship from the sea bottom, where it is lying on its side about 160 feet down.

"It's in the interests of the owners and managers of the ship to salvage it," Cartosio said, adding that it's not out of the question for the investigation to shift to focus on a person.

The catastrophe has puzzled naval experts, who say the yacht should have withstood a storm of this magnitude. No other boats in the area reported damage from the storm.

Survivors, including the Bayesian's captain James Cutfield, have been questioned by authorities about what happened on the ship, but haven't yet spoken publicly. Cutfield was "extremely cooperative," Raffaele Cammarano, another prosecutor, said Saturday.

A maritime legal expert told USA TODAY the disaster could lead to lawsuits and possible criminal charges against Cutfield. Mitchell Stoller, a maritime expert witness and captain, said it was Cutfield's duty to monitor weather and prepare to maneuver the boat through rough waters instead of staying anchored. Italian authorities have said the Bayesian was likely anchored before the disaster. It's not clear if Cutfield has retained an attorney who can speak on his behalf, and messages seeking comment to a Facebook profile appearing to belong to him went unreturned on Friday.

"Indescribable, unreasonable errors" by the crew, not issues with the boat's design, led to its sinking, Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, which owns Perini, told Reuters.

Cammarano said the passengers were likely asleep when the storm hit, which could be why several were unable to escape. The bodies of most were found on the left side of the boat, where they may have gone to try and find pockets of air as it sank, Girolamo Bentivoglio Fiandra of Palermo's Fire Brigade said.

It’s been called a modern metropolis, a cosmopolitan city, an historic gem, an architectural treasure and a cultural powerhouse, among other descriptions. Majestic Moscow has always surprised our guests and left them with lasting and fond memories.

Russia’s famous Golden Ring is an archipelago of historic towns surrounding Moscow. Uglich is one of the oldest and was founded under Igor, the last Varangian prince. It once resisted the Mongol invasion and its ancient walls saw the grisly murder of young Dmitri, son of Ivan the Terrible. The impressive Church of St. Dmitri on the Blood, with its classic onion domes and blood red walls, is a fine example of classic Russian architecture. The tour ends with an enchanting choral concert.

This, the oldest city on the Volga River, and now a UNESCO World Heritage site, boasts a wealth of ancient orthodox treasures. The impressive Transfiguration of the Savior, adorned with murals depicting St. John’s apocalyptic visions can be seen in the Spassky Monastery. The Church of St. Elijah the Prophet is decorated with an awe-inspiring selection of rich frescoes. For a real taste of pre-revolutionary Russia, visitors are entertained by a costumed reception at the Governor’s House.

Close to the shores of White Lake once were the ‘tsar’s fishing grounds’. It lies in a place so serene that ancient monks chose to build no fewer than three holy sites here, including the Ferapontov Monastery. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, its chapels boast magnificent frescoes by Dionysius, one of Russia’s most renowned icon painters. The Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery was a refuge for many nobles during tumultuous times and later a fortress that successfully repelled invading armies.

The Karelia region is a vast and naturally beautiful wilderness that spreads all the way from St. Petersburg to the Arctic Circle. The glorious island village of Kizhi consists almost entirely of the traditionally styled wooden buildings of ‘Old Russia’. Among them is the famous Transfiguration Church built in 1714. Remarkably, and in testament to the craftsmen of the time, not a single nail was used in its construction! Kizhi is one of the favorite stops on the river cruise to St. Petersburg.

A typical rural hamlet brought to life by warm and welcoming villagers. Volga Dream guests are invited into local homes to enjoy classic Russian fare, tea with jam and ‘pirozhki’ (pies). Enthusiastic hosts share Russian traditions and the appeal of village life while proudly showing off their scrupulously kept homes and kitchen gardens. The tour continues with a brief bus ride to see a unique World War II memorial and then, for a real glimpse of Russian life, a visit to a local primary school.

Nizhny Novgorod

This was once a wealthy city thanks to its proximity to rich eastern trading routes. During the Soviet era, the city was closed to outsiders because of its military importance. It’s also where many political prisoners were sent to live out their days in exile. The 16th-century Kremlin ramparts offer spectacular views and the city is known for its elaborately decorated churches. For Volga Dream cruise guests, the highlight of the day is an evening folk concert performed by local children.

Sailing along the Volga river, the riverbank gradually ceases to be dominated by Orthodox churches. Instead, beautiful mosques appear as the river crosses into Tatarstan where the first stop is scenic Kazan, the region’s capital. Inside the white walls of the citadel, the famous Kul Sharif mosque and the old Cathedral of Peter and Paul stand side-by-side symbolizing the two faiths’ long and peaceful coexistence in the region. A concert of traditional Tatar music ends the Volga Dream tour in Kazan.

Passing the Zhigulevskie Mountains offers wonderful views from the sundeck before touring the city. One of the key attractions is the fascinating Space Museum, which offers a revealing glimpse of how the Soviet Union pursued its ambitious journey to the cosmos. The town is also noted for its beautiful esplanade, perfect for a relaxed stroll beside the Volga river. This in turn leads to the Samara State Art Museum. Founded in 1897, it is home to a collection of more than 16,000 works of art.

This city is best known for its close associations with cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin. The Russian hero who achieved worldwide fame as the first man in space lived and studied here. Saratov used to be home to a large German community, a heritage that can still be seen in the local architecture. The Volga Dream tour visits the Radishchev State Art Museum, the first picture gallery in Russia outside Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Originally called Tsaritsyn, the city was renamed Stalingrad from 1925 to 1961 in honor of the USSR’s leader. During World War II, the city’s residents put up a heroic defense, repelling an advancing Nazi invasion. The battle for Stalingrad has gone down in history as a pivotal moment in the bloody conflict on the eastern front. The most ferocious and deadly fighting took place on Mamayev Hill, where an imposing memorial now stands close to the excellent Battle of Stalingrad Panorama Museum.

Saint Petersburg

If Moscow surprises, then St Petersburg delights. Peter the Great founded the city to showcase Russia’s newfound enlightenment. He wanted to show the modern world a cultured and advanced society. In short, he built the city to impress and in that he succeeded splendidly! The striking buildings were designed by some of the finest architects Europe had to offer and even now, the ‘Venice of the North’ never fails to enchant with its spectacular buildings and impressive canal network. It is a city of true grandeur.

Investigators around the world have been searching for sanctions-hit Russian oligarchs’ yachts. One has been hiding in plain sight.

Italian authorities in March impounded Russian coal and fertilisers magnate Andrey Melnichenko’s $600mn Sailing Yacht A after Russia invaded Ukraine. Another yacht, the $300mn Philippe Starck-designed Motor Yacht A, has been anchored for weeks in the port of Ras al-Khaimah, in the United Arab Emirates.

By placing his yacht in the UAE, Melnichenko has put it beyond the reach of western governments enforcing sanctions on those deemed supportive of Russian president Vladimir Putin’s war on Ukraine.

Its presence is a symbolic reminder of the Gulf monarchy’s ambivalence towards western sanctions on Russia, allies of Putin and the wealthy businessmen who have often benefited from ties to the state.

While the UAE government is trying to enhance measures against money laundering to exit a global dirty-money watchdog’s watchlist, the economic foundation of cities such as Dubai has long been based on welcoming flows of assets and people.

“Given its non-enforcement of western sanctions, the dilemma for the UAE is how to sustain its place as an open destination for capital while also appearing to be a good global citizen,” said one compliance professional. “It’s a tricky balancing act.”

The government of the Isle of Man said it had in March deregistered Melnichenko’s yachts, including Motor Yacht A, because of western sanctions, saying, “we will continue to act with appropriate robustness should the situation warrant it”.

Marine locator services placed Motor Yacht A off the Maldives in March. The Financial Times then saw the yacht on April 18. On Saturday it remained moored opposite Ras al-Khaimah’s city-centre fish market.

Businessmen in the UAE say Melnichenko, who denies affiliations to the Kremlin, held meetings there in April, but the tycoon has since returned to Moscow. A representative of Melnichenko, who has been placed under sanctions by the EU and UK as well as Switzerland and Australia, referred questions on the yacht to a lawyer who declined to comment.

UAE authorities in Dubai, Ras al-Khaimah and Abu Dhabi declined to comment.

European officials say they have raised concerns with Emirati counterparts that the UAE could become a financial haven for Russians placed under western sanctions. “We don’t want our allies to become facilitators for the Putin regime,” said one.

The UAE government has said it is maintaining a neutral course through the war, calling for an end to hostilities and providing humanitarian aid to Ukraine. Abu Dhabi, which has developed closer ties with Moscow in recent years, has also assured its allies that sanctions-hit entities will not be able to operate in the UAE. The Gulf monarchy, which has long argued that it is not compelled to enforce other nations’ sanctions, is keen to maintain its historical role as an apolitical territory focused on business.

Thousands of wealthy, non-sanctions-hit Russians have relocated to the UAE to escape economic uncertainty and political instability at home, even though they sometimes struggle to access the financial system. “Big banks are more cautious but smaller banks are offering help to those wishing to relocate. It’s just taking a lot of time,” said a Russian businessman.

Very wealthy Russians generally find financial institutions accommodating. Most of the wealthy elite have second passports from countries that sell nationality, such as Malta or Portugal, which facilitates the opening of new accounts with lenders that are warier of Russian passport holders.

Others have turned to alternative routes, such as cryptocurrencies and hawala, or informal money exchange services. The cost of this service has risen from 1 per cent of the transaction value to 5 per cent since the war broke out as demand surges, said one person aware of the trades.

Many in the UAE see a hypocrisy in western concern over the presence of the yacht and the Russians building new lives there. “So it was OK for London to take all the oligarch money but not for Dubai?” asked one lawyer.
