Superyacht Australia

How to become superyacht crew.

australian yachting jobs

Superyacht Australia, the peak national industry body for the superyacht industry in Australia, is proud to have published a new resource aimed at making it easy for Australians to start their journey as superyacht crew.  Australians are natural superyacht crew with over 90% of our population living on the coast.  Fishing, surfing, swimming, sailing, and paddling are weekly pastimes for nearly all Aussie kids growing up in and around the water. Many have “saltwater in their veins” with surf lifesaving “Nippers” and sailing club “Tackers” programs training children from the age of five in skills that will be sought after as future superyacht crew.

The superyacht industry has virtually been unknown to young Aussies, with those discovering it as a result of backpacking in Europe or by reality TV shows such as “Below Deck” broadcasting on popular streaming services. Internationally the superyacht industry is booming, with vessels getting much larger, more of them and requiring double the amount of crew as many yachts offer rotational positions for senior crew.

The superyacht industry is also gaining momentum in Australia with popular charter destinations including Sydney, the Queensland coast and the Kimberley’s attracting more yachts. This new resource aims to educate young Aussies on what a superyacht is, where you can find them cruising (within Australia and internationally) and different entry-level roles available onboard.

The qualifications required are easy to complete locally in Australia and can provide a great base for future maritime careers.  The STCW 95 (Standards of Training and Certification for Watchkeepers) certification is the mandatory qualification set by the International Maritime Organisation and takes 8 days to complete including theory and practical courses.

Australia is lucky to have two great training providers including Crew Pacific , based in Cairns, and Superyacht Crew Academy based on the Northern Beaches of Sydney. Both training providers offer STCW courses and further Steward/ess and Deckhand courses, aimed to provide students with the necessary basic knowledge of the interior and exterior departments before starting their first roles. The resource also outlines the Mandatory Certificate of Medical Fitness required to confirm you are medically fit to perform the duties required onboard.

Once qualified, Australia has many recruitment companies eager to place “green” crew into their first role. This includes Hill Maritime , a worldwide maritime recruitment and consultancy firm, that places quality engineers on quality vessels all over the world.  Coastal Yachting Recruitment , based on the Gold Coast, is also experienced in placing professional crew worldwide on luxury superyachts.

David Good, CEO, Superyacht Australia commented “Australia has the reputation for providing the best yacht crew in the world, we have a great education, excellent work ethic, and a relaxed professional attitude. This is our opportunity to travel, get paid exceptionally well, and gain sea-time experience that is highly sought after when you want to come ashore and use that experience.”

Superyacht Australia will be distributing this new resource at career expos in major cities such as Perth, Sydney, Melbourne, Gold Coast, and Brisbane where up to 12,000 school leavers per event attend seeking information on future careers.

This new resource can be found on our Superyacht Australia website here: https://www.superyacht-australia.com/superyacht-careers-information/

What Our Students Say

Great training, super friendly and helpful staff with a welcoming atmosphere. Best place to go to for super yacht training, if i ever need to do additional training in the future I wouldn’t go anywhere else.

Sarah Woodger – Stewardess

SCA was excellent from registration through to wrapping up 2 and a half weeks of hands-on courses. The breadth of experience the instructors shared with the classes throughout the STCW, Deckhand and Powerboat courses was honest and realistically portrayed the industry and what to expect as a newcomer. Very much worth the cost for the practical experience gained from ex crew members themselves. Thanks team!

Gerhard Meiring – Deckhand

I did the STCW95+10 with Superyacht Crew Academy. It was a great course, very thorough with the information, the practical days were very good, you will learn a lot from this course.

Michelle Maricic – Stewardess

i had a really great experience with the super yacht crew academy and would recommend it to anyone wanting to join the industry

Anastacia Buhagiar – Stewardess

“Thank you for all the help and support that you gave me when i was studying with you. it was amazing and I will no doubt be visiting again hopefully at the end of next year when I come to do my Yacht Master OffShore. The Boat has offered me an awesome opportunity to learn all there is to learn as well as an awesome salary, benefits, and program. Not to mention the crew are a happy bunch of people and we are like a large family…. I have learned that the crew makes the boat and that is the main thing, not the salary, benefits or program!”

Joshua McCouat – Deckhand

“I am so excited!!! I went for my first interview yesterday afternoon at an agency and got a call from them later on advising that they’d put me forward for a 2nd stewardess position and to expect a call from the captain. He rang this morning and we met at Starbucks and… they are flying me up on Friday! It’s happened so fast, but it felt right. The yacht is currently in Norfolk, Virginia and we will be heading out very soon to spend the season in New England. The captain was really laid back and very forthcoming. Apparently the yacht is privately owned by a wealthy guy (obviously) and isn’t chartered out very often. Mostly they do cocktail parties. He thinks we will be in the Mediterranean next year although he is waiting on confirmation from the owner. The pace on the yacht seems very relaxed. It will be a great place for me to learn as much as possible. I am so keen to get started. Thank you!”

Carlie – Stewardess

Such an incredible experience with the most amazing and helpful instructors. Would highly recommend Superyacht Crew Academy to help you start your journey in this industry!

Tayla McIntyre

“In my first interview I got offered a job! I really liked the chief stewardess so I am on a 43m private Superyacht for the season. I have been on the boat for two weeks and so far all is going well. I am looking forward to a good season and I will be home for Christmas. Two other people who did the course with me, Emily and Adam also got jobs very easily! Thank you again for all of your support and giving us a great head start!”

Ashtyn Leary – Stewardess

“Everything is going GREAT for me over here! We have travelled from Fort Lauderdale all the way along the East Coast up to Labrador, Canada over 4000 miles so far. My roster is split so I spend the first part of the day as a deckhand and the second part of the day as the second stewardess onboard a 154 foot SuperYacht. The owners are fantastic. I really enjoyed the interior crew course and feel so much more prepared for my stewardess role.”

Katie Ford – Stewardess and Deckhand

“I was totally impressed by the STCW training I received at the Superyacht Crew Academy. The instructors were excellent, the equipment top notch, and I truly feel confident that I would perform well in the case of an emergency aboard ship. Thank you Chris and Deb for being so helpful to me. As a foreign student coming to Australia for this training, your kindness was extra meaningful. I am now a Superyacht Agent in Noumea and spend a lot of time aboard superyachts. Even though I am not a member of the crews, my STCW training is right there in the back of my mind just in case there was an emergency; especially when refuelling, helping resupply the medical equipment or moving heavy equipment on and off the superyachts.”

Chloe Morin – Super yacht Agent Noumea Ocean Services

“I have been on a Superyacht for six months and I absolutely love it! The crew is great and the owners are wonderful. We left Florida two weeks ago and we are on a three month trip over to California! We made a stop in Cuba and the owners invited all of the crew to go on day trips with the guests to sight see! Now we are in the Cayman Islands. From here we head through the Panama Canal and then we go to Panama City, Papagallo Peninsula Costa Rica then Cabo San Lucas, before we end up to Southern California. This is such a great experience for me. I do stewardess work, cook for crew and guests, handle lines when docking and leaving as well as watch shifts while we’re underway. I just wanted to say thanks again for all the valuable training I received in my classes! Thank you!”

Jessica Benway – Stewardess

“You are by far the most professional and successful training facility that I have dealt with around the world. Keep up the amazing work!”

Nick Smith – Chief Officer M/Y Akula

“My experience with Superyacht Crew Academy was amazing. I had a fantastic time on the deck crew course and learnt a lot more than I expected.”

Tom Armstrong – Deckhand

“I just wanted to say thank you to the staff at Superyacht Crew Academy. I am currently working on a 43m M/Y Eclipse which is situated in Israel during the winter and the Mediterranean in the summer. I am heading into my third week here, now crossing to Genoa, Italy for the boat show. I am a 3rd stewardess and loving it. We are now in Kotor in Montenegro near Croatia and it is absolutely stunning. I am loving my job and have been lucky enough to rotate with duties and will be doing service this week, in a few hours actually. Thank you for all your help!”

Lauren A – Stewardess

” I thought I would give you a quick update on my adventures. I’ve just finished a cruise on an expedition vessel and am back in Antibes looking for a new position as a stewardess. Thank you for the casual work experience I did while completing my interior course. It’s definitely a lot better now that I have the right qualifications and some experience. I’m finding that there is so much more available to me.”

Natasha Harris – Stewardess

“The instructors were excellent, very professional and thorough. My training at Superyacht Crew Academy made my job as stewardess aboard the Tango possible and enjoyable. It really helps to have the inside story from experts before you begin. I’m happy to recommend the Superyacht Crew Academy to anyone interested in working in this industry.”

Haley – Stewardess M/Y Tango

The benchmark ASX200 dipped 1.2 points, or 0.02 per cent, to close at 8142.1, while the broader All Ordinaries index lost 3.1 points, or 0.04 per cent, to 8364.3.

Tech stocks dipped 0.2 per cent to 3379.2.

Five out of 11 industry sectors ended in the red, led by materials with a 0.54 per cent decline.

The big miners slipped as Singapore iron ore futures fell 2.1 per cent to $90.25 a tonne on growth concerns in China.

BHP retreated 0.91 per cent to $39.19, Rio Tinto fell 0.91 per cent to $109.74 and Fortescue slipped 0.34 per cent to $17.43.

Wednesday’s drift matched a subdued session of Wall St overnight on Tuesday, as investors prepared for the pivotal reveal on interest rates in the world’s largest economy.

The Dow Jones edged down 15.9 points, or 0.04 per cent, to 41,606, while the S and P 500 index climbed 0.03 per cent to 5634 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq rose 0.2 per cent to 17,628.

Betashares chief economist David Bassanese said the markets would concentrate on the size of the expected Federal Reserve cut but also the language from Fed chair Jerome Powell.

“The only lingering uncertainty really is the size of the move and whether Powell signals how quickly they will be cutting rates this year,” he said.

“If he says something like, ‘proceed cautiously, or in a measured way’, words to that effect, it might mean they would cut rates, but not at every meeting, maybe every second meeting.

“Maybe signal, ‘don’t get too worked up about back-to-back rate cuts’.”

Thursday will also deliver August jobs numbers for the Australian economy, which should provide further guidance around the potential trajectory of interest rates from the Reserve Bank of Australia before next week’s Board meeting.

The big banks were mixed, with Commonwealth Bank gaining 0.2 per cent to $143.32, Westpac climbing 0.39 per cent to $33.16, NAB jumping 1.44 per cent to $39.42, but ANZ losing 0.19 per cent to $31.15.

Energy stocks lifted as crude oil climbed 1.5 per cent overnight to hit $71.19 a barrel.

Woodside Energy advanced 0.83 per cent to $24.33 and Santos gained 0.43 per cent to $7.05.

In corporate news, Core Lithium rallied 5.26 per cent to 10c after reporting positive drill results at its Shoobridge gold and lithium project in the Northern Territory.

“Our exploration program will remain weighted towards lithium targets within trucking distance of our Finniss infrastructure,” Core CEO Paul Brown said.

“However, demonstrating the potential to find a high-grade gold deposit provides us with optionality in this strong gold price environment.”

BlueScope Steel lifted 0.8 per cent to $20.16 after announcing an agreement with Israel-based Helios Project to use Helios Green Iron in parts of its steelmaking operations.

The top gainer on the ASX200 was cinema and restaurant company EVT Limited, leaping 5 per cent to $11.06.

The largest laggard was Telix Pharmaceuticals, which tumbled 3.51 per cent to $17.85.

The Aussie dollar gained 0.13 per cent to buy US67.6c at the closing bell.

The rate cut rally in Australian shares continued on Tuesday, with the local bourse hitting fresh highs once again as it booked a fourth consecutive session in the green.

Australia has signed a massive new trade deal with a Middle-Eastern powerhouse, but the agreement has sparked controversy.

Growing jubilance around this week’s interest rate cut in the world’s largest economy propelled Aussie shares to a record high.

Woman scores dream job working just 24 hours a week on stunning private island.

A woman who took a part-time job in another country is crediting the experience as the ideal work-life balance.

Sirirat Nensewicz is a 27-year-old who recently spent two months on Pumpkin Island off the coast of Queensland, Australia.

The content creator told SWNS that she worked for 24 hours each week — cleaning, gardening and bartending around the island’s eco-resort.

In return, the traveler, originally from Hamburg, Germany, received a free place to stay.

“It was an unreal experience,” she said, adding, “I managed to live on a beautiful island, working only 24 hours a week for accommodation and additional pay of over $800 AUD ($540 USD) fortnightly (every two weeks).”

Nensewicz said she only had to pay for her groceries and her phone bill — which equaled roughly $270 a month.

The idea to move to Australia came by accident, in a way, as Nensewicz said she was originally just visiting the country on a working holiday visa.

“As a first-time visa holder, I had to find 88 days of specified work to be eligible for a visa extension if I wanted to stay in Australia longer,” she told SWNS.

Nensewicz said that after beginning to look for places to work in Queensland, she handed her resume to more than 100 potential employers without any luck.

While on the job hunt, Nensewicz came across Pumpkin Island and applied for a job.

Two days later, Nensewicz was an official employee on the island, which is 8.5 miles off the coast of Yeppoon, Australia, per SWNS.

“I remember arriving by a tiny boat shared with people visiting the island on the first day and having to off-load their luggage,” she said.

She added, “The island was very small with only the managers living there full-time and the previous two workers.”

When she wasn’t cleaning bathrooms or bartending during “sunset happy hours,” Nensewicz would spend time “lying in a hammock and swimming,” she said.

Nensewicz’s groceries were delivered via boat once a week — the same one that would bring in tourists.

“The rest of my money was saved or put towards things I wanted,” she said, adding, “It made me appreciate life and the little things a lot more, as the island gave me space to think.

She said, “The people were so open-minded, and they have a great work-life balance.”

Bolter emerges for Eagles coach vacancy on back of ‘very good apprenticeship’

Collingwood assistant coach Hayden Skipworth has emerged as a genuine contender for the vacant head coaching role at West Coast, it has been revealed.

Channel 7’s Ryan Daniels broke the news on Monday evening , with Skipworth not previously seen or acknowledged as a candidate for the role left by premiership coach Adam Simpson in early July.

Currently the sole vacancy in the top job at an AFL club, the Eagles have had over two months to refine and interview for the role – but it perhaps hasn’t been as big a pool of contenders as they would have liked in a perfect world.

Both high-profile coaches and those with strong affiliation to the Eagles have turned down the offer to be a part of the headhunt, including the likes of Nathan Buckley, Dean Cox, Ashley Hansen, Josh Carr, Daniel Giansiracusa and Jaymie Graham.

Interim caretaker Jarrod Schofield was once seen as the lead candidate for the role, but 65 and 93-point losses to close out his side’s season look to have severely dented his chances of being selected in the seat.

Speaking to the news on Fox Footy’s AFL 360, Gerard Whateley assessed where he believes he race now sits.

“They’re in the phase where it would feel like four coaches going through the last step – Skipworth, Steven King, Rhett Montgomerie and Andrew McQualter, and the tea leaves say that this has moved in Skipworth’s direction,” Whateley said.

“Well, I’m not drinking any of the tea leaves, I haven’t seen any of the tea leaves Gerard to be honest,” Herald Sun Chief Footballer Writer Mark Robinson replied.

“All I know is what I’ve been reading; I read last week that Steven King was favourite, got told over the weekend that Andrew McQualter’s looking really good – and now you’re telling me Monday night that the West Australian journos are saying that Hayden Skipworth (has) now rocketed to favouritism.

“I know Skipworth’s pretty well respected; he was at Essendon, then at Collingwood – so if he gets a job, well done – he’s done a very, very good apprenticeship.

Skipworth has been at the Magpies since 2020, and has also led the club’s talent academy.

The 41-year-old also played 55 AFL games across Adelaide and Essendon – with the latter a club where Skipworth coached their VFL team and was among their top side.

Star intercept defender Tom Barrass (linked to Hawthorn) and veteran Jack Darling (North Melbourne) look set to depart the club next month, with the Eagles expected to head slightly backwards still before going forward amid a lengthy rebuild.
