Pros. The quiet room overlooking the garden. Large plastic trash bag. Good wifi. Close to Bay and Ocean.

Cons. One of our neighbors talked loudly on her phone about 3 am, with her voice carrying into the garden. We closed our patio door and it was okay.

Pros. Location is a 10! Great for a young family. Beach without waves on the bay just out your door and the glorious Pacific Ocean just across the street literally a 2 minute walk. Our family had a wonderful time there. My daughter won't stop talking like a parrot after being fascinated with the birds. Great restaurant also.

Cons. Just needs an updating on the rooms, hall's bathrooms.

Pros. The staff is exceptional; kind, friendly, engaging and exceed our expectations every time! The grounds are kept pristine with the peacefulness you seek while getting away from the hustle and bustle. The ducks, parrots and koi fish make you feel like you're on a tropical island. The food, variety of things to do and the river boat are all unique touches that make us look forward to our next visit before we've even left! Not to mention best pool, Jacuzzi and spa we've ever found! If you haven't been there before, you simply MUST experience The Catamaran! Plus, centrally located to many San Diego hot spots!

Pros. The catamaran is a beautiful tropical property on Mission Bay. There is lush tropical vegetation and a distinct feeling of Hawaii. The restaurant and Bar are close to the water and provide a beautiful and relaxing setting for business or pleasure. The rooms themselves are vintage, meaning that they could use updating.

Cons. Rooms needed updating. No noise insulation from outside, although the other guests were respectful and quiet on a Monday night.

Pros. They have the best beds and pillows! We liked the separate bedroom and living areas with refridge and coffee maker, which was easy to use and enabled me to make my morning oatmeal. Was nice to have a view of the Bay.

Pros. Great location. Friendly Staff, Nice rooms.

Cons. Paid Parking. Most spa functions are at additional costs.

Pros. We had a great time. Daughters wedding was fabulous, every detail was handled beautifully. We had many out of town guest that were as pleased as we were!

Pros. Great value for the money! Lots of local activities to do on the property, and wonderful accommodations throughout. It's a great place to try Stand Up Paddle Boarding for your first time! Rooms are spacious if you get the suite, and we really loved the grounds! It's a tropical paradise! Well maintained! The restaurants are pretty good, we would recommend the Sunday brunch at Oceana! Also, take advantage of the Bahia Belle cruise in the evening hours.

Cons. Unfortunately, when you make a late night request, the staff doesn't come up to your room and bring you whatever you need. Aka, we needed some late night towels and we were told to come down to the front desk (all the way from the tower rooms) and get them ourselves. This has never happened to me, especially at a "4-star" resort. In addition, I have been to many spas in my lifetime, and I felt that their spa treatment was very overpriced for the quality of massage received. Overall, we can't decide if we would come back because the positives were so great, and the negatives were so bad! We are 50/50.

Pros. Beds are comfy, helpful and courteous staff, great location. All was great.

Cons. No complaints.

Pros. Location is great right at the mission bay beach front and the oceana restaurant sits facing the mission bay beach. Staff is friendly at hotel as well as the restaurant.

Cons. Stayed at the tower. While wifi connection was excellent and convenient, the rooms need update. In particular, the air conditioner (heater/cooler) spews out bad odor.

The Catamaran Resort and Spa, San Diego

The Catamaran Resort Hotel & Spa is situated between Sail Bay and the Pacific Ocean where San Diego’s Scripps family once had their summer home. The elegant hotel at the corner of Mission Boulevard and Pacific Beach Drive was designed with a 1950s Polynesian vibe. The lobby’s dramatic island Mulberry Tapa (barkcloth) that hangs behind the Tahitian Black Koa wood welcome desk, an exotic stone waterfall and koi pond, hand-crafted Mexican Cantera floor tiles, and dark Honduran mahogany finishes welcome guests to a private tropical paradise. Imported traditional Pacific Island artworks adorn the lobby and other shared spaces in the hotel, and complement the colonial Hawaiian architecture.

Catamaran Resort Rooms

There are seven kinds of guest accommodations at the Catamaran that are divided between bay front and garden view choices. Bay front rooms provide a king or two double beds, a sitting area, and a small fridge. Bay front suites have separate bedrooms and couches in the living areas that fold out to beds, plus wet bars and fridges. Bay front suites are between the Tower and Sail Bay. Bay front rooms are in the building next to the suites facing Sail Bay.

Deluxe bay front and garden suites have separate bedrooms and fold-out couches in the living area, but also have kitchens with stoves, ovens, and full-size refrigerators. Bay front and garden studios have full kitchens, two double beds, and dining areas. All deluxe suites and studios are located in the Tower where you can enjoy epic views of either Coronado Bridge and beyond to Mexico, or Crystal Pier and north to La Jolla , depending on your room location.

Many bay front accommodations open to the sandy shores of Sail Bay, separated only by a grassy area. Garden view rooms open to the lush tropical plants and trees throughout the property; some open up to the pond or pool areas. To choose the room location that’s right for you, check out the property map . All rooms have patios or balconies, free HBO, hi-speed wireless Internet (paid upgrade for larger bandwidth), an iPod docking station, coffeemakers, laptop size room safe, irons and ironing boards, and hair dryers.

If you want a little more privacy away from the action combined with epic views, choose a room on the upper floors of the Tower. The best bay front rooms and suites are the ones facing Sail Bay. This area is in the heart of the action and convenient to the water, so if you want to watch passersby on the bike/walkway that encircles Sail Bay, get in on one of the many resort activities, or catch an occasional wedding, this is the place to be. Some guests have expressed concern that rooms at the Catamaran are dated, so if aesthetics is your primary reason for choosing this hotel, check out the accommodation videos on their site before making a reservation.

Catamaran Resort Amenities

Ah, amenities. This is where the Catamaran Resort Hotel & Spa really shines. You will never run out of things to do here. Adults will love Atoll Restaurant, Moray’s Lounge, the Bahia Belle, and the Catamaran Spa. Kids will go wild for the Kids’ Club and Arcade.

There are many wonderful places to eat near the hotel, but if you only eat one time at Atoll Restaurant at the Catamaran, make it Sunday Brunch with bottomless mimosas from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Weather permitting, take your brunch on the outdoor patio. It’s a little pricey, but oh so worth it.

Moray’s Lounge features local seasonal craft brews as well as a full bar. Happy Hours are daily from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Appetizers are $10, craft brews are $5, well drinks are $5.50, and house wines are $6. Inside, enjoy their 800 gallon saltwater aquarium and outside enjoy the late afternoon ambiance.

catamaran hotel la jolla

Bahia Belle hour-long cruises on Mission Bay are complimentary for Catamaran guests. Choose from family or cocktail sternwheeler cruises. Seasonal dining options are also available aboard the Bahia Belle, and often cocktail cruises feature DJs or live music.

Get your Zen fix at the Asian-inspired Catamaran Spa . Take a few minutes to yourself in the relaxation room with a fruit-infused water, work out in the fitness room, get a facial and make-up for a night out, or enjoy the steam room, sauna, or outdoor hot tub. Go all out and ask about the 2-hour Ritual.

Kids are important at the Catamaran. They’ll love the Kids’ Arcade with Dance Dance Revolution, air hockey, pool, arcade games, and more. Check out Kids’ Corner for more great activities for kids around the resort, the neighborhood, and out and about in San Diego.

These are just a few of dozens of activities at the resort and in the area. Hang out bayside on the beach, walk across the street to the Pacific Ocean for an entirely different beach experience, catch one of Catamaran’s complimentary Movies on the Bay or one of their famous luaus. Try yoga on a standup paddle board or learn to surf. Rent paddle boards, Funcats, kayaks, sail boats, Segways, bicycles, ski boats, you name it. If it says outdoor fun, the Catamaran can hook you up with a great time again and again.

Amenities tip:

Some guests have expressed concern about the costs of equipment rentals at the Catamaran, including steep deposits as much as $100 to $500. The suggestion is to stop by Mission Bay Sportcenter where many of the same rentals can be obtained at cheaper prices. Another frequent guest concern is the $18 per day self-parking fee, so be aware. Parking is tough anywhere in Pacific Beach and Mission Beach and the city does not hesitate to tow away your vehicle; be careful and read all street signs if you try to avoid this fee.

The Catamaran Spa - Catamaran Resort Hotel

San diego's only beachfront spa.

Located on the shores of sparkling Mission Bay and surrounded by lush tropical gardens, the Catamaran Spa is San Diego’s only beachfront spa. This one-of-a-kind escape inside the beautifully designed Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa offers a full range of South Pacific and Asian-inspired healing traditions and focuses on the use of marine and botanical-based products.

Once inside the spa, guests are welcomed by friendly and attentive staff and can browse a gift shop carrying luxury skin care products, lounge wear, jewelry and lifestyle gifts from local and renowned brands.

A South Pacific-inspired menu of services begins with a collection of massages, from the traditional Hawaiian Lomi Lomi massage and muscle-targeting therapeutic practices to ancient healing procedures like reflexology, Japanese shiatsu and Chinese acupressure.

Those seeking improved skin can indulge in a variety of facials, from deep cleansing and detoxing sea mud to anti-gravity facials designed to improve circulation and promote cell renewal. Body exfoliating treatments include nods to the space’s Polynesian influence via the tropical Mango Sugar Scrub and Starfruit Body Scrub. Additional skin care therapies include men’s facials, sunless tanning, waxing and more.

Body wraps are another popular option at the Catamaran Spa and include hydrating Milk and Honey Wraps and energizing Botanical Vitality Wraps. Water therapies include nourishing milk baths, muscle-soothing soaks in seawater and detox sessions via immersion in a blend of Chinese herbs. In addition to treatments designed to relax and heal, the Catamaran Spa offers hair color and styling, special occasion makeup application and nail services including shellac manicures and pedicures.

9 Essential Drinks You Need to Try for Happy Hour in La Jolla in September 2024

catamaran hotel la jolla

When La Jolla gives you beautiful sunsets, delicious  restaurants , and a thrilling downtown what more could you ask for? Ah, of course, Happy Hour. La Jolla Happy Hour is the best time to sample drinks from some of the top restaurants in La Jolla.

Even though there are so many different restaurants in La Jolla, we narrowed it down to our top 9 choices which we think are the most deliciously exceptional at the best happy house price. From custom cocktails to classics with a twist, there’s something for everyone on this happy hour roundup.

1. “Organic Moscow Mule” — Beaumont’s Eatery

If you haven’t tried a Moscow Mule, you’re missing out. This delicious drink is one of Beaumont’s Eatery’s most popular drinks. The drink is made of Tru Organic Vodka, Ginger Beer, Angostura Bitters, and a lime.

The Moscow Mule is an enjoyable cold-copper mug experience that’s a lot of fun. They’re served in copper cups to keep the drink as cold as possible, so you can enjoy it for as long as possible.

Beaumont’s Eatery. located in  Bird Rock , is one of La Jolla’s best restaurants for live music. Its fun party vibe and casual feel make it one of the top choices for La Jolla locals.

Happy Hour is from 11:30 am — 6:30 pm daily for drinks.

Full price Moscow Mules are $10.75 but for Happy Hour it’s only $6.

2. “Cucumber Basil Smash” — Seasons 52

There’s only one way to describe the Cucumber Basil Smash. Smashing. The drink is made of Prairie Organic Cucumber Vodka, White Cranberry Juice, Cucumber, Basil, and Lime.

It’s a local favorite because it’s light, refreshing drink that is light on calories.

Seasons 52 is a great spot for happy hour after a long day of shopping at UTC mall. They have seasonally inspired menus featuring ingredients at their peak of freshness. They use rustic cooking techniques like brick oven roasting and open-fire grilling that bring out natural flavors. All in all, it’s a great atmosphere and high-quality food and of course, excellent drinks.

Happy Hour is M-F 4-6:30 PM.

Cucumber Basil Smash is normally $10.50 but for Happy Hour this Specialty Cocktail is $8.

3. “Southside” — George’s At The Cove

This is one of their most refreshing cocktails! The Southside includes Plymouth Gin, lemon, mint, and cane sugar. It’s minty, refreshing and citrusy — perfect after a long day in the office or just to quench your thirst among friends.

Happy Hour is hosted in their mid-level bar,  George’s Level2 . They are also launching a brand-new Late Night happy hour, which will be Thurs-Sat from 9pm-midnight and feature $10 specialty cocktails and discounted small bites.

George’s  at the Cove is a renowned three-level dining destination located in the heart of La Jolla overlooking the Pacific Ocean and northern coastline. Cocktails are made with in-house ingredients and hand cut ice. There are recipes and twists on classic drinks along with unique punches, sours, coolers and more.

Duke's La Jolla Ocean View

4. “Heart Opener” — The Hake

The Heart Opener is heart wrenchingly good. It’s the Hake’s tastiest drink made up of Avua Cachaca, Luxardo, Pistachio Falernum.

The  Hake  Restaurant uses a seasonal farm-to-table approach focusing on fresh seafood and an upscale casual bistro atmosphere. It offers a unique global-inspired menu created by Chefs Federico Rigoletti and Roberto Craig of Mexico City’s Puntarena Restaurant fame.

The bar offers Craft and classic cocktails, local beers on tap, a fine collection of single malt whiskeys and a large selection of Mezcal. A carefully selected wine list with over 30 wines by the glass, reflects our passion in the glass as well as on the plate.

Happy Hour is every day 5-7 PM.

Signature Cocktails are $8.

5. Rosa — We Olive Wine and Bar

Don’t whine, just wine. The Rosa showcases aromas of crushed raspberries and watermelon. The pale salmon coloring of this classic Provencal style wine is made from 100% Grenache.

Debuting in early 2011,  We Olive  La Jolla was the first We Olive to expand beyond premium California Olive Oils and feature an ocean-view Wine Bar, showcasing small-production California wines, local craft beer, and a menu of olive oil inspired small plates.

Happy Hour specials are from 3:30 to 6:30 M-F where beers are $2 off and wine is $3 off except on Wednesdays. On Wine Wednesdays, all wine glasses are half off from 3:30 to 6:30 pm.

Their other Happy Hour specials include Sunday Funday where wine bottles are $7 off.

6. Sangria — Herringbone

Sweet and fruity, Herringbone’s Sangria is delicious. The Sangria is made of Red wine, raspberries, cinnamon sticks, pomegranate, and lime.

Located in the coastal community of La Jolla, Herringbone is a restaurant brand conceptualized by  Top Chef  alum Chef Brian Malarkey. Herringbone features “Fish Meats Field” coastal cuisine with an emphasis on line-caught seafood and high-quality meats.

Happy Hour is 4-6 pm daily & all night Mondays. Bonus Tip: Oyster Hour $ Oysters daily from 4-6pm.

Sangria’s are $6.

7. “Maya Jungle Cruise” — Leña Craft Mexican

If you like exotic alcohol, this is the drink for you. It’s made of Tequila Exotico, Xtabentum, Amaro Nonino, fresh pineapple, fresh lime, banana demerara, and pomegranate molasses.

Lena Craft Mexican is a gastropub, located in the heart of La Jolla, CA. Local’s love the authentic flavors and good vibe that Lena gives.

Happy Hour is M-F 3-6 PM.

All Margarita’s are $6 and beers are $1 off.

8. “My First Time” — Wheat and Water

Everybody’s scared the first time they do anything. Drink creator Ashley Moore says “My First Time” is a fun play on the phrase. It’s a handcrafted drink made with jalapeno-infused Rancho Alegre Tequila, St. Germain, Yellow Chartreuse, lemon, grapefruit bitters, and salt.

Wheat & Water specializes in wood-fired pizza, shared plates, healthy salads and charcuterie. Featuring a variety of beer from local and national breweries, wines ranging from California and Europe and a cocktail list of originals and our favorite classics.

Happy Hour is M-F 8PM to Close.

All cocktails are $7.

9. Duke’s Mai Tai — Duke’s La Jolla

Anyone who’s been to Duke’s knows that this is one of their best drinks. The Mai Tai is made with Pineapple Passion Orange Guava and La Lahaina Rum.

Overlooking the La Jolla  Cove , Duke’s serves genuine, friendly hospitality with contemporary interpretations of traditional island plates. As a tribute to Hawaii and Southern California beach lifestyles, Duke’s celebrates family, views and the spirit of aloha. We welcome our guests to become a part of our ’ohana.

Duke’s Aloha Hours happen daily from 3-6 PM.

All cocktails are $8 during Aloha Hours.

BONUS ROUND: Sometimes the Best Cocktail is the One You Make at Home

Let’s face it–sometimes you want a good cocktail without leaving the house. Unfortunately, not everyone has the time, patience, pantry furnishings, or bar paraphernalia to make recipes straight out of Mr. Boston Official Bartender’s Guide . Lucky for you, the cocktail industry has been working on it. Our editors voted this ready mixed mojito cocktail as their favorite, but brands like DRNXMYTH are making it easy to enjoy classic margaritas, whiskey sours, Mai Tais, rum punches, and all manner of beloved cocktails into the comfort of home.

Pearl the Seal, a La Jolla mascot

Named after Pearl Street in La Jolla, Pearl is the unofficial mascot of the various elves on the daily news desk at LaJolla.com. We’re writers, editors, and people who work on websites; sometimes so many people work on one project that no one feels like they should take the credit.
