The Catamaran Resort and Spa, San Diego
The Catamaran Resort Hotel & Spa is situated between Sail Bay and the Pacific Ocean where San Diego’s Scripps family once had their summer home. The elegant hotel at the corner of Mission Boulevard and Pacific Beach Drive was designed with a 1950s Polynesian vibe. The lobby’s dramatic island Mulberry Tapa (barkcloth) that hangs behind the Tahitian Black Koa wood welcome desk, an exotic stone waterfall and koi pond, hand-crafted Mexican Cantera floor tiles, and dark Honduran mahogany finishes welcome guests to a private tropical paradise. Imported traditional Pacific Island artworks adorn the lobby and other shared spaces in the hotel, and complement the colonial Hawaiian architecture.
Catamaran Resort Rooms
There are seven kinds of guest accommodations at the Catamaran that are divided between bay front and garden view choices. Bay front rooms provide a king or two double beds, a sitting area, and a small fridge. Bay front suites have separate bedrooms and couches in the living areas that fold out to beds, plus wet bars and fridges. Bay front suites are between the Tower and Sail Bay. Bay front rooms are in the building next to the suites facing Sail Bay.
Deluxe bay front and garden suites have separate bedrooms and fold-out couches in the living area, but also have kitchens with stoves, ovens, and full-size refrigerators. Bay front and garden studios have full kitchens, two double beds, and dining areas. All deluxe suites and studios are located in the Tower where you can enjoy epic views of either Coronado Bridge and beyond to Mexico, or Crystal Pier and north to La Jolla , depending on your room location.
Many bay front accommodations open to the sandy shores of Sail Bay, separated only by a grassy area. Garden view rooms open to the lush tropical plants and trees throughout the property; some open up to the pond or pool areas. To choose the room location that’s right for you, check out the property map . All rooms have patios or balconies, free HBO, hi-speed wireless Internet (paid upgrade for larger bandwidth), an iPod docking station, coffeemakers, laptop size room safe, irons and ironing boards, and hair dryers.
If you want a little more privacy away from the action combined with epic views, choose a room on the upper floors of the Tower. The best bay front rooms and suites are the ones facing Sail Bay. This area is in the heart of the action and convenient to the water, so if you want to watch passersby on the bike/walkway that encircles Sail Bay, get in on one of the many resort activities, or catch an occasional wedding, this is the place to be. Some guests have expressed concern that rooms at the Catamaran are dated, so if aesthetics is your primary reason for choosing this hotel, check out the accommodation videos on their site before making a reservation.
Catamaran Resort Amenities
Ah, amenities. This is where the Catamaran Resort Hotel & Spa really shines. You will never run out of things to do here. Adults will love Atoll Restaurant, Moray’s Lounge, the Bahia Belle, and the Catamaran Spa. Kids will go wild for the Kids’ Club and Arcade.
There are many wonderful places to eat near the hotel, but if you only eat one time at Atoll Restaurant at the Catamaran, make it Sunday Brunch with bottomless mimosas from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Weather permitting, take your brunch on the outdoor patio. It’s a little pricey, but oh so worth it.
Moray’s Lounge features local seasonal craft brews as well as a full bar. Happy Hours are daily from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Appetizers are $10, craft brews are $5, well drinks are $5.50, and house wines are $6. Inside, enjoy their 800 gallon saltwater aquarium and outside enjoy the late afternoon ambiance.
Bahia Belle hour-long cruises on Mission Bay are complimentary for Catamaran guests. Choose from family or cocktail sternwheeler cruises. Seasonal dining options are also available aboard the Bahia Belle, and often cocktail cruises feature DJs or live music.
Get your Zen fix at the Asian-inspired Catamaran Spa . Take a few minutes to yourself in the relaxation room with a fruit-infused water, work out in the fitness room, get a facial and make-up for a night out, or enjoy the steam room, sauna, or outdoor hot tub. Go all out and ask about the 2-hour Ritual.
Kids are important at the Catamaran. They’ll love the Kids’ Arcade with Dance Dance Revolution, air hockey, pool, arcade games, and more. Check out Kids’ Corner for more great activities for kids around the resort, the neighborhood, and out and about in San Diego.
These are just a few of dozens of activities at the resort and in the area. Hang out bayside on the beach, walk across the street to the Pacific Ocean for an entirely different beach experience, catch one of Catamaran’s complimentary Movies on the Bay or one of their famous luaus. Try yoga on a standup paddle board or learn to surf. Rent paddle boards, Funcats, kayaks, sail boats, Segways, bicycles, ski boats, you name it. If it says outdoor fun, the Catamaran can hook you up with a great time again and again.
Amenities tip:
Some guests have expressed concern about the costs of equipment rentals at the Catamaran, including steep deposits as much as $100 to $500. The suggestion is to stop by Mission Bay Sportcenter where many of the same rentals can be obtained at cheaper prices. Another frequent guest concern is the $18 per day self-parking fee, so be aware. Parking is tough anywhere in Pacific Beach and Mission Beach and the city does not hesitate to tow away your vehicle; be careful and read all street signs if you try to avoid this fee.
Catamaran Resort San Diego Neighborhood
The Catamaran Resort Hotel & Spa is central to Mission and Pacific beaches . Just a four-minute walk away is World Famous , a wildly popular beachside restaurant. They’re open for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert; check out their menus . If you can only get there once, make it breakfast. Rent bikes and hit Ocean Front Walk (bike/walkway along the beach) after breakfast. There are a ton of shops between World Famous and Crystal Pier , or ignore the shopping and simply enjoy the view. Go the opposite direction and ride down to Belmont Park for a nostalgic ride on the Giant Dipper . Across the street from Belmont Park ia Sandbar Sports Grill where you can get a refreshing mid-afternoon adult beverage. Across Mission Boulevard is lovely Bonita Cove Park ; here, you can lie in the grass and relax before getting back on the bikes, crossing West Mission Bay Drive, and taking Bayside Walk (bike/walkway along the bay) back to the Catamaran.
Catamaran Resort Promotions
There are abundant free activities and events going on at the Catamaran Resort Hotel & Spa all the time. The Bahia Belle cruises are also complimentary for Catamaran guests. Happy Hour in Moray’s Bar is every day of the week from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The Catamaran Spa often has Groupon deals, as does the resort.

Dear Kayla, thank you for visiting The Catamaran Spa. Your positive comments are greatly appreciated. We're pleased you enjoyed your massage and look forward to your return soon.
Enjoyed a couples massage via a gift which was great! Lockers are very clean, filled with amenities, and I appreciated the access to the sauna, steam rooms, rest area with tea. There is an automatic service fee (gratuity of 20%) so keep that in mind as you are paying. The massage therapist was very friendly and attentive to what I wanted to focus on for my massage.

Dear Anna, thank you for visiting The Catamaran Spa and providing this wonderful feedback. We're pleased you enjoyed your massage and our amenities and hope to welcome you back soon.
Tucked away from the busy beach town is this hidden gem of a spa. They allow you to use the fitness area and have a jacuzzi that is mainly for spa guests. The jacuzzi spa is in an enclosed area with these beach front views. Staff is super friendly and accommodating. When calling booking an appointment, they answered phone promptly and friendly. I Booked a scrub and massage and felt so relaxed that day. It was the perfect end to the trip.

Dear Emily, we are delighted that you enjoyed our spa amenities, and friendly team, and that booking an appointment was pleasant. Please join us again soon for another relaxing day at our bayside sanctuary.
Beware that you are automatically charged a service fee (gratuity of 20%). They don't tell you that when booking. I always tip well, but I'm annoyed that it's mandatory. Maybe i would have tipped more, but now I won't. Just change your pricing then because you didn't even ask if the service was good. Amenities are nice. Service is lackluster. Went here for a pedicure and was still waiting for the massage I paid extra for, but never got and then was charged a service fee. Also went for a facial and the lady is extremely rude if you don't have perfect skin. Save your money and go elsewhere. I love the location, though.
Omg I wish I could afford to come here all the time. This was the best spa experience I've ever had. The place is so clean and the amenities include a sauna, steam room, and vitamin c infused shower just in the locker room. They also have this relaxation room that is amazing. I just wish they had more things to eat in the relaxation room other than old apples and bananas. My partner and I got the couples massage and an hour went by incredibly quick. Amazing! I can't wait to come back again

Dear Rose, thank you for taking the time to share your experience of your most recent visit to the Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa. The serene waters of Mission Bay provide the perfect backdrop for our spa's relaxing services. We're thrilled to hear that you enjoyed your couples' massage and we look forward to welcoming you back next time.
Overall gripe: 50 minute massage was closer to a 30-35 minute massage Visited The Catamaran Spa on our anniversary for a couple's massage. Read on for the Pros and Cons: PROS: ~Overall, well appointed -- full on resort type spa. ~Relaxation lounge featuring tea and flavored water, dim lights, loungers and relaxing music. ~Nice decor with Buddha statues, mosaic tile, warm browns and creams. ~His and her locker rooms with respective sauna and steam rooms (i.e. not co-ed), 3 spacious showers with double privacy curtains, ample towels, robe in locker, key pad locker, spa slippers available, private changing rooms with mirror/hooks/curtain, complimentary toiletries available for use like deodorant, hairbrushes, hairspray, mouthwash, lotion, shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, etc. Hairdryers, restrooms, cold wash clothes, water in locker room. ~Generally clean, spa attendant is regularly sweeping for used towels, etc. ~When you pay for a treatment, you are able to use the outdoor spa hot tub (small), the steam room, sauna, relaxation room and resort pool and hot tub. ~ You're given 6 hours parking validation. If you use the resort pool (for which you need a wristband) you get given what is essentially a room key card which enabled us to exit the parking lot without a charge. ~Massage technicians were caring and friendly. ~Spa was nice and quiet the day we attended -- I practically had the locker room to myself most of the time. ~Nice gift shop off reception. ~The resort is attractive with a tropical feel. There are parrots on display (at certain times), a couple of restaurants featuring large fish tanks, a beach, a walking path and water activity rentals available. ~Rhe resort pool a few minutes walk from the spa featured live music, pool towels and food/beverage. CONS: ~We paid for a 50 minute massage, but the massage felt rushed and by my watch it was actually closer to a 30 or 35 minute massage. We paid around $400 for the two of us -- I honestly felt ripped off. I mentioned it to the front desk on the way out, but they just sloughed it off. For this reason, I would not recommend it. The actual massage was average. ~Front desk staff were not that personable. When we arrived they basically shoved a clipboard under our noses to sign the waiver and didn't say much. ~The female spa attendant that guided me around the spa was aloof, not warm and friendly. She neglected to tell me spa slippers were available. ~A bit of 'coming and going' by staff in the relaxation lounge. You could also hear hair dryers and the rumble of a tumble dryer. ~ Sauna and steam room are not co-ed, so you're sat there by yourself wishing you could be with your honey. ~I was not able to make a couples massage appointment on-line, I had to call. ~The relaxation room, massage oil, steam/sauna could have done with a bit of aromatherapy scent. The massage oil smelled like Canola. ~The spa is looking slightly tired in places. ~The outdoor spa hot tub fits about 4 people and is in a cramped corner of a patio overlooking the grass, lots of people walking by. ~If you visit the resort pool, be prepared for it to be crowded with lots of families. (Summer anyway). An overall 'okay' experience, marred by a massage that felt rushed and was definitely not as long as the 50 minutes advertised.

I was excited to use a gift certificate but was disappointed with the service & atmosphere and wouldn't recommend it. The spa itself is small & dated. My "50 minute" $204 massage with Shannon was only about 35 minutes long, I suppose the $34 mandatory tip leaves no incentive to give clients what they actually pay for. The facial by Lily was terrible as she is untrained and does not know how to do a facial massage, which is why she doesn't do it unless requested. She has no idea how to perform a professional facial. At $170 & $34 mandatory tip, $204 was ludicrous.

Dear Jacqueline, thank you for taking the time to write about your very disappointing experience. We strive to ensure our guests enjoy their time at the Spa and we apologize that we did not accomplish that during your visit. We have shared your comments with our management team for consideration and we hope to have the chance to welcome you back for an improved visit.
The Catamaran Spa is divine, a true gem. I visited pre-covid for a birthday treat myself spa day. The moment I stepped into the spa I knew I was in for a treat. The sound of the outside world is immediately paused. The lighting is dimmed and you are walked to the women's locker. There a robe and crispy white slippers await for you. The massage itself was great. However, I truly enjoyed waiting in the darker, quiet room, with light music prior to getting my massage. If you cant unplug there "Houston we have a problem!" After the massage you have access to their pool and their jacuzzi which faces the bay. All in all a great way for women to treat themselves!

Thank you for your 5-star review of the Catamaran Spa, Michelle. We are delighted that you had a refreshing and relaxing spa experience. Happy birthday; we look forward to welcoming you back to luxuriate at our one-of-a-kind, serene, San Diego spa on the beach.
I was really looking for a zen, peaceful, quiet, tranquil spa experience - and unfortunately, that was not my experience at the Catamaran Spa. All of the staff I interacted with at the hotel and the spa were very nice and helpful. The facilities are clean, although in my opinion the women's locker room was a little narrow and cramped. I didn't feel there was much space to spread out and relax. You can get a pass to the hotel pool and the front desk staff also let me sit on the recliners on the front lawn facing the beach which was nice. Plenty of chairs at the hotel pool and towels are provided - could be fun with a group of friends. The private whirlpool is a nice addition, but it's a very small space with ~5 chairs - stiff wooden recliners that were not comfortable. I was really looking forward to the Relaxation Lounge - and I think it's a nice space (dimmed lighting, soft music, tea/water provided), but most of the time I was in there, other women were chatting loudly and it really took away from the experience for me. The room I got for my massage was so disappointing. I heard another woman complaining about it in the relaxation lounge... and of course, I end up in that room, ha! It felt like an abandoned office or something - it was very odd. Cavernous/echo-y feeling and there was a huge tub next to the massage table making loud whirring noises during the whole massage. It feels like they could have put a little more effort into the decor/ambiance to make it a more welcoming space. Maybe the other massage rooms are nicer. When I left my massage, my masseuse said she'd be waiting for me to lead me back to the relaxation lounge but she was nowhere to be found. I was majorly bummed as this was a much-anticipated self-care day for myself and I was looking forward to it after all the great reviews, but I won't be back.

Dear Ms. Jacobs, thank you for your recent visit to the spa. We appreciate your positive comments about the Spa's cleanliness, the facilities, and friendly staff. We are, however, sorry to hear that you did not have the tranquil experience you were hoping for. We shared your review with our manager who informed us that she will be contacting you directly in order to address your concerns. We hope you will give us another chance to make a favorable impression.
Had a really negative experience at the spa, but it was all related to one employee. Overall the staff at the hotel and spa are very friendly. The General Manager made the situation right. The spa is nice but the massages were definitely not worth the price.

Dear Shawn, the Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa is grateful for your continued patronage over the years. Our service and hospitality are our greatest strengths and we are deeply disappointed by your unfortunate experience with the staff and the miscommunication about our holiday hours. This is not indicative of the quality of experience we aim to provide for our guests. We have shared your feedback with our team to improve in these areas, and we are pleased to hear that our GM spoke with you personally about your concerns. Please accept our apologies, and we hope to have the chance to welcome you back again in the future for a more positive experience.

On the northwest shore of Mission Bay, the Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa attracts visitors looking for a bit of R&R. The property is visibly older than other modern luxury accommodations in the San Diego area. However, each of the guest rooms features a plasma TV and an iPod docking station. Still, some guests can't help but remark that the rooms need an upgrade. But the on-site amenities are better received, with travelers praising the Catamaran Spa for its soothing ambiance and its long list of treatments. Recent guests also commend the hotel staff members for their friendly nature and eagerness to help out. And for many, the resort's Sunday Champagne Brunch was a highlight of their visit. The property charges a $34 resort fee, which covers amenities like hotel-wide Wi-Fi access, in-room water and towel service.

The Catamaran Spa - Catamaran Resort Hotel
San diego's only beachfront spa.
Located on the shores of sparkling Mission Bay and surrounded by lush tropical gardens, the Catamaran Spa is San Diego’s only beachfront spa. This one-of-a-kind escape inside the beautifully designed Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa offers a full range of South Pacific and Asian-inspired healing traditions and focuses on the use of marine and botanical-based products.
Once inside the spa, guests are welcomed by friendly and attentive staff and can browse a gift shop carrying luxury skin care products, lounge wear, jewelry and lifestyle gifts from local and renowned brands.
A South Pacific-inspired menu of services begins with a collection of massages, from the traditional Hawaiian Lomi Lomi massage and muscle-targeting therapeutic practices to ancient healing procedures like reflexology, Japanese shiatsu and Chinese acupressure.
Those seeking improved skin can indulge in a variety of facials, from deep cleansing and detoxing sea mud to anti-gravity facials designed to improve circulation and promote cell renewal. Body exfoliating treatments include nods to the space’s Polynesian influence via the tropical Mango Sugar Scrub and Starfruit Body Scrub. Additional skin care therapies include men’s facials, sunless tanning, waxing and more.
Body wraps are another popular option at the Catamaran Spa and include hydrating Milk and Honey Wraps and energizing Botanical Vitality Wraps. Water therapies include nourishing milk baths, muscle-soothing soaks in seawater and detox sessions via immersion in a blend of Chinese herbs. In addition to treatments designed to relax and heal, the Catamaran Spa offers hair color and styling, special occasion makeup application and nail services including shellac manicures and pedicures.
The Catamaran Spa offers a variety of “rituals,” or spa packages. Inspired by the natural beauty of Fiji, the signature Tropical Catamaran Ritual includes a milk and honey exfoliating scrub and massage and a coconut milk bath for ultimate relaxation and hydration. Other options include the renewing Ancient Oceans Ritual and the ultra-hydrating Guava Anti-Aging Ritual.
Complimentary amenities available to guests include an outdoor heated pool and private whirlpool, relaxation lounge, Vichy showers, beach cabanas, an open-air fitness center with cardio and weight-training equipment, seasonal outdoor yoga classes and more. From the spa and fitness center guests can access the nearby boardwalk for walking and running, and can enjoy bicycle, paddleboard and kayak rentals for a full fitness adventure.
Whatever the purpose of their visit, guests will find complete relaxation and wellness at the Catamaran Spa, named the Best Day Spa 2015 by San Diego CityBeat and Gold Day Spa 2015 by The Beach and Bay Press.

Polynesian paradise at catamaran resort and spa in san diego.
By CV Weekly on August 22, 2024 No Comment
Travels with Greg
By Greg ARAGON
My 6-year-old son has never left California. So when he said the Catamaran Resort and Spa ( www.catamaranresort.com ) in San Diego is more fun than Hawaii, I took it with a grain of salt.
But then I started thinking. He has a good point. The tropical island-inspired Catamaran has everything a kid and his family love. It offers a big, beautiful swimming pool, a sandy beach, spacious rooms and suites, bike rentals, a video arcade, an onsite restaurant and lots of opportunities to make new friends.
Our getaway to the Catamaran Resort began recently when we checked into a gorgeous bay front suite overlooking San Diego’s stunning Mission Bay. Spanning 438 square feet, the room was highlighted by a large patio that is literally steps from the sandy beach.
The suite also boasted a big private bedroom with two queen beds and a large TV, a separate living area with another big TV, a pullout sofa, a wet bar with a refrigerator and a dining area. A large and spacious bathroom with a walk-in shower completed the room’s layout.
Beyond the suite, the rest of the property is just as impressive. Featuring 310 rooms, the sprawling Polynesian-themed resort is surrounded by palm trees, waterfalls, koi ponds, exotic birds and lush vegetation.
The hotel is located in San Diego’s Pacific Beach community and sits on the shores of Mission Bay, a large, artificial saltwater bay created for recreational activities such as wakeboarding, jet skiing, sailing, camping, cycling, jogging, roller skating, skateboarding and sunbathing.
One of my family’s favorite spots at the resort was Mission Bay’s sandy beach located steps from our patio. Here the kids made sand castles and played in the water while we relaxed in lawn chairs, soaking rays and admiring the coastline.
The beach was also where we rented a 21-ft Hurricane powerboat and cruised around the bay for a fun-filled hour. We rented the boat from Action Sports Rentals ( www.actionsportrentals.com/catamaran-resort-hotel-spa/ ), which has a booth on the dock in front of the Catamaran Resort.
It was an epic voyage. After learning how to control the vessel and finding the proper speed for the bay, we cruised into the morning sun. Along the way we waved to boaters and paddle boarders, sailed beneath an old bridge and past expensive condos and luxury hotels. The boat was easy to maneuver, had lots of seating and shade and was a perfect family outing for the afternoon.
After mooring the boat, we went to the resort’s large pool area where my kids played in the water and made new friends. Secluded behind tall palm trees, the pool is a tropical oasis with lots of seating, a Jacuzzi and a bar. Each day, the pool area offered a free kids’ program for hotel guests.
Next to the pool is also a video arcade, full of free games for kids and their parents. My son and I had a great time there, shooting basketballs, racing cars and playing foosball.
From the pool, we walked along a lush, tropical path to Oceana Coastal Kitchen, the resort’s on-site signature restaurant. Boasting beachfront dining with spectacular views of Mission Bay, Oceana serves creative, coastal California dishes with an eclectic flare. The restaurant, led by executive chef Paul Arias, won Tripadvisor’s 2023 Travelers’ Choice “Best of the Best” Restaurants for Everyday Eats, ranking 10 th best in the U.S.
Our dinner at Oceana began with a delicious bowl of New England style clam chowder with bacon, red bliss potato, thyme, cream and steamed little neck clams on top and mixed in. I am a major chowder fan and this bowl had the perfect amount of creaminess along with a perfect clam to potato ratio, making it one of the best I’ve had.
The restaurant also specializes in sushi and when we sampled the Oceana House Roll we fell in love. The rolls are exquisitely filled with eel, tempura shrimp, crab, Nori, avocado and unagi sauce. This dish is a work of culinary art.
We completed our dinner at Oceana with a succulent grilled prime hanger steak with smoked potato puree, watercress, cippolini and macadamia chimichurri; and a tasty Hawaiian style pad Thai with stir fried vegetables, tofu, pineapple, chili, macadamia nuts, cilantro and soy.
After dinner we strolled along the beach and watched the sun fall into Mission Bay.
The next morning we had potatoes and eggs, and a plate of chilaquiles for breakfast at Oceana, and then rented a surrey bike from Action Sports Rentals. We then pedaled around the bay. Along the way we saw sailboarders fling over waves and then stopped at a park for the kids to play.
Back at the resort we watched a demonstration featuring the hotel’s exotic parrots including vibrant macaws, beautiful cockatoos and a lilac-crowned amazon. Some of the birds talk and can say things like “hi,” “hello” and “goodbye.” The parrots are available to view outside daily between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Pacific time, depending on the weather.
We concluded the day at the resort’s Sunset Luau. Held on the shores of Mission Bay, the luaus are a festive celebration of Polynesian food, music and dances perfect for family and friends. The party begins with a lei with real flowers and a delicious Mai Tai. This was followed by an all-you-can-eat buffet with Hawaiian-inspired rice and salads and various succulent meats including pork, chicken and fish.
Local luau group Pride of Polynesia provided authentic island music and dance featuring hula and fiery torch dancers. Kids also got a chance to hula dance and participate in activities at the Kids Corner where they made flowered leis, festive crafts, colored and played with stick-on tattoos.
Catamaran Resort and Spa is located at 3999 Mission Blvd. in San Diego CA 92109. For more information and reservations call (858) 488-1081 or visit www.catamaranresort.com .
