Cayo Blanco Travel Guide – Catamaran Tour Day Trip

Cayo Blanco travel guide - Shows rows of palm trees on the beach

If you’re visiting Varadero Cuba and fancy a relaxing day out on a catamaran boat, exploring tropical island beaches, Cayo Blanco is a great place to visit. The island day trip is one of the top things to do whilst staying in Varadero and it’s extremely easy to get to.

Follow our Cayo Blanco travel guides for an overview of everything you need to know about visiting Cayo Blanco. We’ve included tour booking tips, a list of things to do on the island and plenty of answers to frequently asked questions.

Why should I visit Cayo Blanco?

If you’re looking for a relaxing day trip, Cayo Blanco is a must! It’s an unspoilt island of tropical beaches that are perfect for relaxation in the hot Caribbean sun. The beaches of Cayo Blanco are covered with powdery white sand mixed with pebbles, shells, and if you’re lucky, you’ll witness some spectacular sea life.

The waters of the island are extremely calm and shallow, making it child friendly and a great family trip. Sand bars have formed on the bay of the beaches so you can wade out and lie down without any chance of being swept away by the waves.

There’s also a coral reef off the shore, which is teaming with tropical fish, and if you’re lucky, you might spot a giant sea turtle. We recommend bringing snorkelling gear if this is something you want to do when visiting Cayo Blanco.

Where is Cayo Blanco?

Cayo Blanco is an uninhabited island just off the coast of the Varadero peninsula, located around 30km away. It’s a remote island that’s literally the epitome of paradise. The beach is around 15km long, making it great for long walks and getting away from the crowds of incoming tourists.

How to get to Cayo Blanco

The main way to get to Cayo Blanco is by catamaran boat. A regatta of catamarans leave Varadero marina each morning of the week, heading straight to the island. It takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes to get to Cayo Blanco, with a 20-minute stop-off point on the way for snorkelling.

The other way to get to Cayo Blanco is by a private boat tour with your very own captain. Whilst this option is more expensive, it’s a great choice for larger groups or for those that want a unique experience away from other tourists. Prices vary depending on the charter boat, so be sure to compare costs online before booking. If you have a power boat licence, you can also rent your own boat. Check out this website or speak to the boat operators at Varadero Marina for more information.

What’s included in the catamaran tour to Cayo Blanco?

The catamaran tour to Cayo Blanco includes a variety of activities and amenities in your action-packed day of exploring. These include:

  • A bus transfer to and from your hotel – Be sure to check your email booking confirmation or speak with your hotel tour agent to find out the exact pick up-time at your hotel.
  • Unlimited drinks. The boat trip includes an open bar, serving up Cuba’s most famous and popular spirit, Rum, amongst other spirits, beer, water and soft drinks.
  • On board entertainment – The staff on the boat are full of energy and create a great atmosphere with plenty of dancing. Music is played throughout the boat trip, ranging from Cuban classics to popular chart music and Latin dance jams. It’s not a party boat and families are welcome. However, the atmosphere is upbeat and party fuelled, without any rowdiness.
  • An allocated seat on board the catamaran, nets to lounge on and complimentary use of sun loungers on the island.
  • Complimentary snorkelling equipment rental – The boat stops off for snorkelling on the way to Cayo Blanco and you’ll get half an hour or so to swim in the sea. See what tropical see-life you can find!
  • Buffet lunch – Upon arrival at Cayo Blanco, you’ll get to indulge in an authentic Cuban buffet lunch, which includes various meat dishes, lobster, vegetables and rice. They also offer tropical fruits for dessert.
  • An open bar on Cayo Blanco island – Continuing on with the theme of complimentary drinks on the boat, drinks are also included on the island.

Overall, we thought the tour was great value! The only additional cost is optional tipping at the end of the tour.

How to book a tour to Cayo Blanco

  • Reserve a space at the ‘tours’ desk in your hotel or with your in-hotel vacation representative.
  • Book the tour online using a travel agent such as TUI or Sunwing. Both companies have apps and websites where you can book the tour digitally. Book tickets online here .
  • Speak to a local tour company in Downtown Varadero, or by browsing local companies on TripAdvisor here.

As the catamaran tour to Cayo Blanco is a very popular tour option in Varadero, there are various ways to book. These include:

In our experience, booking with your hotel tour agent is the easiest option. Prices are pretty much the same no matter who you book with. Expect to pay around $75 per person for the full day tour.

Be sure to have your tickets/booking confirmation ready to show your bus transfer driver when they pick you up.

How long does the Cayo Blanco tour last?

The tour is a full day trip from 9am until 5pm, with around 3 hours on the island. You’ll usually be collected at your hotel between 9am and 9:30am, boarding the catamaran at 10am and departing straight away. Returning to Varadero, you’ll arrive at 4pm and should be back at your hotel before 5pm.

Arriving into Cayo Blanco by boat

Can I stay overnight on the island?

Unfortunately, you won’t be able to stay overnight on the island. Aside from a few locals that look after Cayo Blanco and prepare for the arrival of tourists, it’s completely un-inhabited. If you’re looking to spend more time on the beach, we recommend booking a hotel near Varadero Marina. You then have the option to do a couple of boat trips during your vacation. A private charter boat also allows more time on the island.

The top things to do in Cayo Blanco

The key reason people visit this stunning remote island is to relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery. However, there are a few things you can do on the island if you don’t want to sit out in the sun all day long.

  • There are plenty of sunbeds at Cayo Blanco beach where you can relax in the shade under a cabana. Pick the perfect spot and spend the day sipping on rum cocktails.
  • Explore the surrounding area. You can walk the full stretch of the sandy white beach, venturing away from the tourist centre. You’re likely to come across some animals that live on the island, such as iguanas and hutias. There’s also plenty of tropical plants and untouched areas of beach.
  • If you’re looking for a slightly more adventurous trip, swim offshore and go snorkelling. The further you head away from the beach, the more coral reef you’ll find. The sea is shallow and the current isn’t too bad. However, we do recommend using fins.

Sun loungers and the restaurant on Cayo Blanco

When’s the best time to visit Cayo Blanco?

Cuba boasts all year-round warm temperatures, but it’s best to avoid extremely hot weather and also the wet season. You can visit Cayo Blanco most days of the year as long as tours are running.

The best time to visit is from January to early May. Temperatures are manageable during this period and it’s considered as Cuba’s dry season. If you struggle with heat, try to avoid the summer months from June – August as temperatures are scorching, making it uncomfortable to sit out in the sun.

Our top tips for visiting Cayo Blanco

  • Be sure to book your ticket to Cayo Blanco in advance, especially during the busier months to avoid disappointment. We recommend booking at least 3 days before your planned trip.
  • Bring a beach bag with you that includes sunscreen and towels. All food and drink is includes, so you’ll just need your clothing and toiletries. The catamarans have under-seat storage where you can place all your belongings.
  • We recommend bringing a large thermal flask or steel water bottle with you to keep your drinks cool.
  • Be sure to pack extra toilet roll, as not all public bathrooms will be fully stocked. Hand sanitiser is another great accessory to bring with you.
  • Bring a change of clothes with you. You’ll be in the sun all day, so might want to freshen up mid-way through after being on the beach. The boat has toilets where you can change. Alternatively, you can use the toilets at the restaurant.
  • Bring a snorkel if you want to discover the Cayo Blanco sea life. The catamaran staff provide these free of charge for the boat snorkelling stop, but not for the island
  • If lying out on the sunbeds, try not to leave drinks and food lying around. The island is home to some rodents that will pester you and hang around if they detect a snack.

Walking along the powdery white sand beach

We hope you found our guide to the Cayo Blanco catamaran tour! You can now plan a trip to this stunning island paradise. It’s a day trip that suits beach and boat lovers that want to relax for the day. There isn’t a lot of sightseeing, but the beach itself and on-board boat experience ensures that you have a great time. If you have any other questions about Cayo Blanco or the catamaran trip, leave a comment down below. 😊

Hello, I’m from Canada and will be visiting Varadero at the end of January, just wondering what is the best way for me to book the Cayo Blanco catamaran tour. Also a lot of the info is for hotels but I’m staying at an air bnb, does that make a difference, thank for your time

Thanks for your message. Hope you’re looking forward to your trip 🙂

You can book the tour on this website here: https://www.civitatis.com/en/varadero/cayo-blanco-trip/

I’d message the provider before booking, and explain you’re staying at an air bnb – it shouldn’t make a difference, but I’d double check to make sure.

Varadero Cooking Class: A Tour For The Foodies In Your Group

For those of you who have tried all the best restaurants in Varadero and want to take some Cuban recipes home with you, enroll in a Varadero Cuban cooking class . Where you’ll learn to make local delicacies and prepare  mouth-watering cocktails!

Now, I need to put a disclaimer here. I’m not the cooking type and I have a tendency to cause kitchen fires, whenever I try to cook. But I did find the tour enjoyable and I (luckily) didn’t burn the building down, thanks to the expert guidance of the instructors.

Yet, for me, it was the cocktail making and the drinking of said cocktails that was the highlight of the tour. If you’re a foodie, you should consider taking this tour while in Varadero. It’s a lot of fun!

Duration: 4 hours Languages: English & Spanish

FAQs: Plan Your Varadero Adventure

Absolutely! Varadero is located on a paradisiacal peninsula, with miles of pristine white beaches. In fact, Varadero Beach was rated the second most beautiful beach in the world on TripAdvisor in 2019. With its resort amenities and stunning natural beauty, Varadero is definitely worth a visit .

Is Varadero Open For Tourists?

Yes, Varadero has been completely open for tourism since 2021. Cuba is also open for American tourists, making it an ideal destination for travelers from all over the world.

What Is The Best Time To Visit Varadero?

The best time to visit Varadero is during the high season, which runs from November through to May . Which is perfect, because it coincides with winter in the USA and Europe. The peak period offers pleasant weather and avoids the risk of hurricanes, which are more likely from June through to October.

Is Varadero Safe For Tourists?

Varadero is completely safe to visit. And it’s actually one of the safest places in all of Latin America. While it might be the second largest resort area in the Caribbean, it’s actually the safest resort area in the Caribbean !

Can I Scuba Dive In Varadero?

Now, I’m not a scuba diver myself, but my friends are. And they do take scuba diving tours from Varadero. To go diving from Varadero, your easiest option is to take a tour to scuba dive Play Coral , located between Varadero and Matanzas, where you’ll dive the second largest barrier reef in the world.

A second option, is to head over to the Bay of Pigs on a full day scuba tour. And you can take scuba tours from Varadero to the Bay of Pigs . But you will need to have your dive certification, to take this tour.

How Do I Get From The Airport To The City In Varadero?

Varadero’s Juan Gualberto Gómez Airport (VRA) is roughly 30 kilometers (19 miles) southwest of Varadero and is in the township of Matanzas. And it takes about 30 minutes in a car to reach Varadero, from the airport.

You should read my complete guide to transport options from the Varadero airport and book a transfer in advance of arriving in Varadero.

catamaran tour in varadero

How Do I Transfer To Varadero From Havana?

For those of you who want to spend 48 hours or more in Havana , or are landing at Havana’s José Martí International Airport (HAV) , you should read my guide on transfers between Havana and Varadero .

Havana is approximately 150 kilometers (93 miles) from Varadero. In a car, the journey takes about 2 hours and 20 minutes. But on a bus, the journey is 4 hours or longer. Private car transfers are the most comfortable, convenient and fastest method to transfer from Havana to Varadero .

What Is The Best All-Inclusive Resort In Varadero?

Melia Internacional is where I often choose to stay. And I recommend it as one of the best all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean. It’s also one of the newest resorts in Varadero.

Melia International 'all-inclusive' resort in Varadero Cuba

What Are The Best Restaurants In Varadero?

I’ve previously listed the top 10 best restaurants in Varadero . You should always venture outside your hotel to eat in Varadero. No matter which resort you’re in, the resort food is often quite terrible.

How Long Do I Need For A Vacation In Varadero?

What I consider the ideal length of time for a holiday in Varadero, is 3-7 days. With any more than a week in Cuba, you really should be traveling around and visiting other cities. But with only 2-3 days, you should focus on Varadero and its surrounds.

Now, cheap direct flights from Canada, Colombia , Mexico and the USA do exist. And the flight time is about 2.5 to 3.5 hours. Direct return flights can often be found for $200 to $300 USD . Which means for those of you looking for a cheap weekend getaway, to escape North American winter, Varadero is a good option.

Can I Visit Santa Clara From Varadero?

If you’ve got longer in Cuba, there are a host of interesting cities that you can visit, while basing yourself out of Varadero. Now, one of the more popular destinations that I get asked about, is Santa Clara , which is home to Che Guevara’s mausoleum complex.

While you can take an organized tour to Santa Clara from Varadero , the guides typically try to pack in too many destinations. And in doing so, they make for lousy tours where you’ll spend most of your time trapped on a tour bus.

My suggestion to you, if you want to visit Santa Clara from Varadero, is to organize a private car or transfer. And once in Santa Clara, then take a tour of the city . Because if you try to pack Cienfuegos, Santa Clara and Trinidad into a single day , you’re going to have a less than enjoyable day.

What Should I Pack For Cuba?

The two most important items to bring with you to Varadero, are a comprehensive travelers medical insurance plan that specifically covers Cuba. And a good VPN to access the internet .

Having travelers medical insurance that covers you in Cuba ,for the duration of your stay, is a requirement under Cuban law. Cuba’s Aduana (Customs or TSA) may ask to see it at the airport. If you don’t have insurance, they will make you buy their own expensive (and useless) Cuban insurance policy.

The second item, a VPN, is something you definitely need in Cuba . And in fact, you should not travel to Cuba without a VPN . A VPN will allow you to access the internet, like you do at home. Without a VPN, you will not be able to access most foreign websites, online banking, social media or messaging applications .

  • I get my insurance from www.visitorscoverage.com
  • I’ve used NordVPN in Cuba for the last 3 years. NordVPN is available at www.nordvpn.com

Just a few words to tell you that our trip was great, everyone was verry happy! The land program was well balanced with plenty of time to rest. Even the guide said that it was a very good compromise. The last part on the boat was fantastic and we were able to leave the marina at night and come back the last morning (Cuban crews are authorized to sail at night), and thus we had time to visit Cayo Largo and the surroundings. The cook aboard was a real chief and we amazing meals every day. We’ve found Cuban people really friendly, even with their limited means and resources, and the culture and history of the country particularly interesting. I thank you very much for your organization et ensuring everything goes as smoothly as possible.

  • Best Overall Day Trip from Varadero: Havana
  • Easiest Day Trip from Varadero: Varadero’s Caves
  • Most Unique Day Trip from Varadero: Yumurí Valley
  • Best Beachy Day Trip from Varadero: Cayo Blanco

For travelers who are spending their entire Cuba itinerary in Varadero, perhaps staying at one of the resorts that have made it Cuba’s number one resort town, the answer is clear: a day trip to Havana is a must. Just over two hours west of Varadero, Havana is bursting with things to see and do, all of which make it such a bucket list destination.

For travelers who are planning to spend a few days in both Havana and Varadero, day trips from Varadero to either the area’s caves or Yumurí Valley are our top recommendations – both will show you a totally different side of Cuba. Head out on a catamaran excursion to Cayo Blanco for a day trip to one of the other pristine beaches in the area.

Day Trips from Varadero

You can’t say you’ve experienced Cuba without having explored Havana! Havana is Cuba’s capital of pretty much everything, home to the island’s best food, its most important historic and political monuments, and the most impressive art, entertainment, and travel experiences on the island.

While you’ll need at least three days in Havana to experience the best of the city, it’s well worth it to take a day trip to Havana from Varadero if that’s all the time your itinerary allows. Spend the day exploring Old Havana , eating ice cream at Coppelia, and taking in the view over the city from the Spanish colonial El Morro fortress before enjoying a sunset drink at Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski’s rooftop bar.

There are a number of ways to get from Varadero to Havana (and back again), but for a quick one-day trip, we generally recommend travelers book a private transfer from Varadero to Havana or even an organized small-group day trip to Havana from Varadero .

varadero caves

2. Varadero’s Caves

Mexico is famous for the cenotes of the Yucatán Peninsula, awe-inspiring caves often filled with water that dot the tropical forest landscape. While Cuba doesn’t have quite as many caves as its neighbor, the numerous caves near Varadero make for some of the most popular Varadero excursions.

Plan to visit some of the closest caves to Varadero on your own or join in on one of the many cave tours in Varadero that visit several caves in one excursion. When taking into consideration transportation costs, they are generally the easiest and most economical way to visit several in one day.

Cuevas de Bellamar and Cueva de Ambrosio are some of the best-known caves in the area and some of the most dramatic. These impressive subterranean worlds make for a fascinating break from the beach and are the perfect place to escape from the heat of the Cuban sun on a hot day in Varadero.

varadero excursions

3. Cayo Blanco

Varadero’s world-famous beachfront is nothing to scoff at, but if you’re looking for a beachy day trip, consider embarking on one of the popular Cayo Blanco catamaran cruises that depart directly from Varadero.

Take a catamaran cruise to the nearby deserted island known as Cayo Blanco, which has beautiful white beaches and is surrounded by corals and reefs. These excursions include delicious buffet lunches on the island and drinks, as well as all the equipment you’ll need for snorkeling and spending time at the beach.

Keep in mind that due to restrictions about Cuban citizens embarking from the island on boats, those with Cuban citizenship and a Cuban passport unfortunately can not partake in these cruises.

yumuri valley

4. Yumurí Valley

Head towards Varadero from Havana’s eastern beaches ( Playas del Este ) and just before you reach Matanzas you’ll roll through the Valle de Yumurí – the Yumurí Valley. If you’re looking to connect with Cuba’s stunning and lush, if little-visited, countryside, there is no better Varadero excursion than this.

There are plenty of ways to enjoy the lush valley, including cruising down the Canimar River, visiting farmhouses with farm-to-table restaurants, and exploring caves. The best excursions to the Yumurí Valley will include a little bit of all these highlights, plus some stops along the way to enjoy the best viewpoints in the province.

Jeep tours of the Yumurí Valley are by far the easiest way to explore the Valley , though hiring a private driver from Varadero to take you through the valley and make stops along the way is another option, especially if you’re traveling with friends or family.

5. Matanzas

For travelers who have already explored Havana but would love to use a Varadero excursion to explore even more of Cuba’s vibrant cities , Matanzas is a great choice. Matanzas is known as the “Athens of Cuba” for its rich cultural and historical legacy, meaning that there’s plenty to see here.

Spend time exploring the charming plazas, churches, and museums of the historic center of Matanzas – there’s plenty to see here including the historic Museo Farmaceutico with its old medicine cabinets and bottles that will make you feel like you’re stepping back in time, and the new Lolo Galeria that is helping launch a rebirth of the city’s modern art scene.

Excursions from Varadero to Matanzas often include stops at some of Varadero caves, making for an easy way to enjoy the best of day trips from Varadero at once. Or, you can get from Varadero to Matanzas quite easily on your own, whether by taxi or public transport; it’s just 45 minutes from Varadero and on the way from Havana.

6. Cárdenas

Located just half an hour west of Varadero along the coast, Cárdenas is a small but vibrant city with a nice historical center and a lot to love. While the city itself isn’t as grand as others you might want to visit on Varadero excursions, there’s plenty here to warrant a visit.

More generalized excursions from Varadero to Cárdenas to choose from include an overview of the city and its role as one of the largest sugar-producing hubs in the country ages ago, with excursions focusing specifically on its role in rum production and tobacco .

However, you can also do cooking classes in Cárdenas – which are some of my favorite recommendations for travelers in Varadero , and a great way to connect with locals. They’re really a highlight.

You can find four-hour excursions or six-hour excursions from Varadero to Cárdenas, which offer a great amount of flexibility depending on how much time you’re looking to part from the beaches of Varadero.

cienaga de zapata

7. Cienaga de Zapata

Nestled directly south of Varadero on the southern coast of the country, Ciénaga de Zapata is one of Cuba’s richest and most diverse natural areas. For a destination with a name that translates directly to Zapata Swamplands, it may not sound incredibly appealing to visitors, but it has a lot to offer.

Spot Cuban crocodiles, kayak through mangroves, and encounter flamingos and vibrant tropical birds along the way. This area is rich with wildlife and is home to many species that are totally unique to Cuba, offering hiking trails, waterways, and plenty of sites to explore.

One easy way to visit the Cienaga de Zapata from Varadero is to take an excursion to the Boca de Guama and the Hatiguanico River , located within Cienaga de Zapata. You can book excursions online with Civitatis , which is probably the most hassle-free way to see the area.

If you have a bit more time, you can also join a diving tour from neighboring Playa Larga or Playa Girón in the Bay of Pigs, though that may be pushing it for a day in which you’ll have to return to Varadero. Spend at least one night in the area to enjoy everything this incredible corner of Cuba has to offer.

Travel Insurance

Cuba requires that all travelers have proof of a comprehensive travel insurance policy in order to enter the country. Check out our guide to travel insurance for Cuba for more details. We recommend these brands for Cuba travel insurance:

cienfuegos cuba hotels

8. Cienfuegos

Located less than three hours south of Varadero, the bustling yet beautiful city of Cienfuegos makes for a great day trip destination from Varadero.

Spend a day exploring some of the city’s beautiful 19th-century French architecture, so unique to Cuba and the rest of the Caribbean that it was given a UNESCO World Heritage Site designation. Visiting buildings like the stunning Teatro Tomás Terry and walking the bayfront malecón promenade are a few of the best things to do in Cienfuegos along the way.

In our opinion, it’s a city in Cuba that far too few visitors experience. You’ll love getting to know this hidden gem as part of a Varadero excursion.

You’ll find some organized Varadero excursions that include visits to both Cienfuegos and Trinidad – within one day.

While it is technically possible to embark on one of these journeys, we don’t recommend them for most travelers. It’s an incredibly long journey to reach both cities, and you’ll spend so much time in the car that you won’t have much time to enjoy any of these places.

Both Cienfuegos and the beautiful colonial city of Trinidad are certainly worth a visit! Trinidad particularly makes for the perfect destination to visit after a stay in Varadero, with its beautiful and historic streets making it among the most well-preserved colonial capital in the Caribbean. There’s just too much here – and it’s too far from Varadero – to be able to do it justice in one day trip.

santa clara cuba

9. Santa Clara

The central Cuban city of Santa Clara doesn’t have the French-style architecture of Cienfuegos or the age-old colonial heritage of Trinidad , but with what it does offer it’s the perfect spot for day trips from Varadero.

Santa Clara’s biggest attraction is the mausoleum of the famed revolutionary Che Guevara, a must-visit destination in Cuba for history lovers. Spend an hour exploring this incredible museum and mausoleum before wandering through the small historic center of the city.

You won’t find many organized day trips from Varadero to Santa Clara as it doesn’t tend to be as popular as some of the bigger-name destinations like Havana, Matanzas, or Cienfuegos. Private transportation or grabbing a shared taxi or bus at the Varadero bus terminal is likely your best bet.

Travel Essential

Don’t think about traveling to Cuba without a good  VPN (Virtual Private Network) . Using a VPN while connecting to the internet is an easy way to keep your personal information safe from hackers and trackers.  We’ve used  NordVPN  for years and couldn’t recommend it more – it’s a must for safety online, especially in Cuba.

bay of pigs

10. Playa Larga

You may have never heard of Playa Larga, but surely you’ve heard of the Bay of Pigs. From Varadero take a day trip across the island to Cuba’s southern coast to explore some of the beachy destinations and the other interesting attractions at the world-famous, or infamous, Bay of Pigs , where the white sand Playa Larga awaits.

Playa Larga sits at the northern end of the Bay of Pigs and is the nicest and most serene beach on the bay, making it the perfect spot for a day for travelers looking to spend time on the sand. However, more adventurous travelers will head to other spots around the bay as well, like nearby Playa Girón for snorkeling or the Ciénaga de Zapata for wildlife encounters.

playa giron

11. Playa Girón

Unlike Varadero, the Bay of Pigs beach of Playa Girón tends to be rocky rather than smooth, but that’s all the better for visitors who know what to come for: some of the best snorkeling and diving in Cuba. Specialized diving excursions from Varadero to Playa Giron for certified divers looking for a memorable dive retreat.

Nearby, the Ciénaga de Zapata has more to offer as well. Kayaking through mangrove forests, spot Cuban crocodiles and flamingos, and much more as you explore the area for the day. It would take at least one overnight to explore both the Bay of Pigs and the Ciénaga de Zapata areas well, but you can get a good taste of the experience on day trips from Varadero.
