These days, tattoos are so commonplace in the U.S. military that every branch has its own policy as part of its uniform regulations, but a few years ago that wasn’t the case. The U.S. Navy , however, has a long tradition of sailor tattoos.

Here’s the meaning behind a few of the classic sailor tattoos:

1. fully-rigged ships.

ship sailor tattoos

A tattoo of a fully-rigged ship from the age of sail means the sailor had been around Cape Horn, the rough, stormy waters around the southern tip of South America. A fully-rigged ship is one with three or more masts, square sails fully deployed.

2. Nautical Star

nautical star

The star is a symbol of a sailor always to be able to find his way home. The nautical star is a five-pointed star in dark and light shades counterchanged to resemble a compass rose.

3. Shellback Turtle

shellback turtle sailor tattoos

Sailors can wear the Shellback Turtle when they get initiated into King Neptune’s Court after crossing the equator. If you’re unsure what exactly this means, We Are The Mighty has an explainer for you:

4. Crossed Cannons

crossed cannons tattoo

The crossed cannons mean a veteran has seen military service as a sailor.

5. Swallows

navy swallows tattoo

Sailors earn a new swallow tattoo for every 5,000 nautical miles traveled, which is about 5,754 regular miles, roughly the distance between New York City and Tel Aviv. The circumference of the earth is 21,639 nautical miles, just about 4.16 sparrows.

anchor sailor tattoos meaning

A single anchor means the sailor crossed the Atlantic or has been a member of the merchant marine, a fleet of civilian ships that carries military cargo. In wartime, this fleet is mobilized to carry war materiel, including troops and supplies.

During World War II, the Merchant Marine took a beating with high casualties, entering the European war long before the United States itself. Since the U.S. was delivering war supplies to Britain through Lend-Lease, Nazi u-boats targeted U.S. shipping bound for the UK. The Merchant Marine casualty rate was 3.9 percent, whereas the Marine Corps’, the next highest, was only 2.94 percent.

7. Rope on the Wrist

rope on the wrist

A knot of rope on a sailors wrist identifies him as a deckhand, someone who maintains the hull, decks, superstructure, mooring, and cargo handling. Deckhands are still common in ocean-going vessels, though they’re far less likely to be maintaining wooden ships.

8. Hula Girl

hula girl sailor tattoos

Hula girls signify the sailor has been to Hawaii.

9. Crossed Anchors

crossed anchors

Sailors wearing the crossed anchors on the webbing between their thumb and index finger are identifying themselves as boatswain’s mates, the guys who maintain the deck and take care of smaller boat operations and damage control parties.

10. HOLD and FAST

hold fast sailor tattoos

These words are a charm spelled out on the four front-facing fingers on each hand. Sailors hope it brings them good luck while gripping the rigging. Holding fast means the sailor isn’t going to let the line go, no matter what. Sailors were a superstitious bunch and life on a sailing ship was tough (to say the least). Anything that gave them the edge in saving their own lives was worth doing.

11. Pig and Rooster

pig and rooster tattoo

The foot tattoos of pigs and roosters were worn by sailors in WWII in the hopes it would keep the sailor from drowning. The Navy shipped these animals in crates at the time. When ships went down, the crates floated, and the animals inside would sometimes be the only survivors

12. Compass Rose

compass rose sailor tattoos

Another good luck charm that allows a sailor to find his way home.

13. Crosses

Worn on the soles of a sailor’s feet, these are thought to ward off sharks

14. Dagger through a Rose

dagger through a rose

This tattoo means the sailor is loyal and willing to fight anything, even something as sweet and beautiful as a rose

Wearing a dragon means the sailor has served in China.

16. Golden Dragon

golden dragon

When a sailor crossed the International Date Line, he earns the right to wear the Golden Dragon tattoo. The International Date Line is the imaginary line of longitude that separates two calendar dates. When someone sails from East to West, they set their clock back one hour for every 15 degrees of longitude they pass. When they pass the date line, they’ve gained a full 24 hours.

17. Harpoon

harpoon sailor tattoos

Sailors tattooed with harpoons were serving or had served in a whaling or fishing fleet.

18. King Neptune

king neptune sailor tattoos

Another badge of honor earned for crossing the Equator.

19. Palm Tree

The palm tree has two meanings, depending on your navy. Sailors in the Royal Navy during World War II could wear it after sailing on Mediterranean cruises. It can also be worn by U.S. sailors who served in Hawaii.

21 Traditional Sailor Tattoo Design Ideas and their Meanings

Getting a traditional sailor tattoo is much more than a representation of maritime accomplishments, a talisman against omens, or a memorial for loved ones. This ThoughtfulTattoos post breaks out of these cliché ideas and gives you 21 wonderful designs along with their meanings.

21 Traditional Sailor Tattoo Design Ideas and their Meanings

Did You Know?

It was British explorer Captain James Cook’s crew who are credited to popularize sailor tattoos in the western society.

Frequently known as nautical tattoos, the traditional sailor tattoos were much more than pin-up girls and booze bottles tattooed all across their bodies. Before WWII, the only men bearing tattoos were sailors, hobos, and people working in the circus. During WWII, in Honolulu, Hawaii, it was the former Navy man named Norman Collins, a.k.a. Sailor Jerry, who popularized the world of tattoos and changed the course of history once and for all.

The techniques used to create the bold, vibrant, and artistic tattoo designs spread like wildfire, and are still a popular choice today. So, if you too are interested in getting such a tattoo or are attracted to a design concept that holds a personal meaning, then our following compilation will help you make the final decision.

Sailor Tattoos and Their Meanings

Even though the world of tattoos has evolved, and still keeps pushing its boundaries, many enthusiasts are still drawn towards the old-school flash tattoo designs inked by sailors. Here’s a visual guide of beautiful and classic sailor tattoos.

Being one of the most secure objects aboard a ship, the anchor was a powerful tattoo for sailors, especially a Merchant Marine. It symbolizes stability, was used as a hidden symbol for the cross, or that a sailor has crossed the Atlantic Ocean.

Traditional Anchor Tattoo

Whether you’re getting a tattoo of an alcohol bottle or the one used to send letters off to sea, this is an old-school tattoo popularized by Sailor Jerry. You can add a variety of elements to the design, such as a banner, ship, skull, ship, or even dice.

Alcohol Bottle with Dice Sailor Tattoo

Compass Rose

A basic design consists of the four cardinal directions―north, south, east, west―positioned around the base. Inside, there’s a star that represents the North Star; a navigational tool that has been in use for centuries. Getting this tattoo can be a reminder that it is essential to focus on the future, not let your past haunt you, and moving forward in life, but honoring and learning from the past as well.

Compass Rose Sailor Tattoo

A dice tattoo can mean that you’re a risk taker, daredevil, and like to gamble or take chances. Adding flames to the design usually means that the person has an immense love for gambling.

Flaming Dice Sailor Tattoo

A regular dragon tattoo means that a sailor has served in Asia. However, a golden dragon usually indicates that a sailor has crossed the International Date Line―the imaginary line that goes from north pole to south pole.

Golden Dragon Sailor Tattoo

A tribute to hope and brotherhood, getting an eagle tattoo means that you support the idea of American unity even during terrible times, such as a war.

Flying Eagle Sailor Tattoo

Full-rigged Ship

A full-rigged ship tattoos have three or most masts, and makes for a wonderful tattoo for both men and women. For sailors, it was a representation of their travels around Cape Horn. In this day and age, getting a ship tattoo can symbolize adventure, safe journey home, and new beginnings.

Full-rigged Ship Tattoo in Waves

The heart is a symbol of emotions, love, passion, and desire, whereas a dagger is a lethal weapon, having a negative connotation. Combining these two elements for a tattoo would suggest that the heart is in great pain, is suffering, and perhaps has been betrayed by someone you love.

Dagger through Heart Sailor Tattoo

Nautical Star

As most of you already know, this is a symbolic star that is greatly associated with the navy or Marine Corps. Even though it reminds us of a compass star, it is a 5-point star. The tattoo is a representation of navigation, way of life, or a safe passage home. Sometimes, the tattoo is inked in red or green colors, which usually symbolizes that the individual is a member of a port or starboard watch, respectively.

Nautical Star Sailor Tattoo

Getting a tattoo of a big cat―panther, tiger, cougar, cheetah, leopard, lion―can symbolize that you are a wild one at heart and love to live life by your own rules.

Wild Panther Sailor Tattoo

Pig & Rooster

A pig and a rooster tattoo was quite popular among sailors as it served as a talisman for them. It was believed that these animals would save them from a shipwreck. If history is to be believed, many times, both the animals were taken aboard in wooden crates. In case of a shipwreck, the crates would then float with the current and find a safe way to the shores.

Pig and Rooster Sailor Tattoo

Pin-up Girls

Being one of the most iconic sailor tattoos in history, pin-up girls wearing sailor hats and clothes is a popular concept till date. For sailors, getting such a tattoo meant that there’s a special girl waiting for them back home.

Pin-up Girls Sailor Tattoo

There are different types of sailor knot tattoos out there, but this is one of the most recognized and a popular design. Traditionally speaking, the tattoo is inked around the wrist and usually depicts that the sailor is a deckhand.

Knotted Rope Sailor Tattoo

Remember the character Quint from the movie Jaws ? If yes, then you’ll have a fair idea of why the shark tattoo was so popular, and of course, still is. Although the tattoo doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with the attributes related to the fish, the terror it brings is instilled in humans.

Angry Shark Sailor Tattoo

Depicted mostly with their fangs out and ready for a strike, a snake tattoo represents power, potential fight, and a don’t-mess-with-me attitude.

Snake with Fangs Sailor Tattoo

A swallow tattoo is perhaps the most popular and common tattoo idea among sailors. As the bird is known for its navigational skills, its migration pattern where it can always find a way home, this tattoo holds a deep meaning for many. It was also believed that once a sailor died, the birds had the power to carry their souls into heaven.

Flying Swallows Sailor Tattoo

Mostly, guns or crossed cannons were inked to represent military naval service. A tattoo of a knife can mean pain, skill, revenge, or even betrayal at someone’s hand.

Traditional Tattoo Meanings

Old-school tattoos are rooted in the American serviceman’s interpretation of traditions and symbols that go back thousands of years. Every tattoo or ‘Flash’ is a personal statement but there are certain common meanings. Here are a few of our favorite Tattoo Meanings.

LADY HEAD TATTOOS

Lady head tattoos are often associated with beauty, femininity, romance, desire, independence, or good luck. They can also represent a heroine, muse, or a lover. Lonely sailors at sea thousands of miles away from their homes would often get these women to remember the loved ones they had left behind. Many of the most popular lady head tattoos depict gypsy women of the European Romany culture, whose travel & nomadism were romanticized as a free way of life.

SWALLOW TATTOOS

In addition to indicating that a sailor had sailed 5000 miles, swallow tattoos are also associated with the idea of return. This "return" symbolism is rooted in two ideas. The first was the swallow's famous migration pattern, always returning home to San Juan Capistrano. Second, it was believed that if a sailor dies at sea, birds carry his soul home to heaven.

ANCHOR TATTOOS

At sea, the anchor is the most secure object in a sailor's life, making it the perfect representation of stability. This is why you'll often see anchor tattoos emblazoned with "Mom" or the name of a sailor's sweetheart (the people who keep them grounded). Anchors have become popular within general tattoo culture over the years, but the symbolism is still the same. It's a reminder of what keeps you steady.

SHARK TATTOOS

Sailor Jerry’s attitude toward sharks embodied those of many a sailor. You want to hate ’em, but you gotta love ’em. Sometimes animal tattoos are about taking on its traits. A lion shows you’re brave. A panther shows you’re tough. But a shark’s more about what you overcome. A shark on your arm says you’re willing to stand your ground. It says you’re not about to become someone else’s seafood.

DRAGON TATTOOS

Jerry deeply admired the work of Japanese tattoo masters and was the first Westerner to enter into regular correspondence with them. Yet he was also determined to beat them at their own game. Jerry's dragon tattoos , clearly Asian in nature, embody these conflicting attitudes. They’re more like exotic ghosts than living beings — like totems of an earlier, fascinating era.

SKULL TATTOOS

A tattoo is one of the few indelible decisions we make in life, representing a commitment to your dying day — this is one reason skulls and death themes are big. The other is that tattoos, in the ancient world and in Jerry's day, were often the marks of warriors, mercenaries and adventurers – people whose life choices represented coming to terms with death (“Death Or Dishonor”) or perversely inoculating one's self against it (“Rats Get Fat While Brave Men Die”).

HAWAII TATTOOS

After WWII, Jerry remained on his beloved Hawaiian Islands the rest of his life. He loved its beauty and exoticism and that it was as far away as he could get from a world he increasingly viewed as a screwed-up place, devoid of honor and conviction.   From his legendary hula girl to more scenic pieces, his Hawaii tattoos reflected his sense of the islands as a kind of paradise on earth.

MILITARY TATTOOS

Being in the service isn't just a job, it's an epic chapter of life. One where buddies can save your life and one decision can determine your fate.   This intensity breeds an appetite for ink, for tattoos that commemorate a fallen comrade, that link a man to his platoon, flight crew, or ship...and that declare a particular military credo, such as the marines “Semper Fi”.

SNAKE TATTOOS

Snake tattoos represent potency and power. Unlike panthers, which are usually depicted in mid-action, snakes are typically shown coiled and ready to strike, representing a don't-tread-on-me sensibility, thus warding off evil, misfortune and potential brawls. Sailor Jerry's favorite snake to ink was a King Cobra.

PANTHER TATTOOS

Panthers are usually inked as totems of prowess and virility, sometimes also symbolizing a connectedness to nature. Sailor Jerry's panther tattoos are particularly ferocious and masculine – drawn with red, often bloody claws, open jaws and occasionally in the company of a naked woman (who, for some reason, Jerry always made a redhead).

LUCKY 13 TATTOOS

There's a long-standing tradition in tattoo culture of celebrating that which others fear (hence the thematic prevalence of things like skulls and knives). Sailor Jerry's Lucky 13 motif is probably the most famous set of tattoo designs that flip a bad luck symbol on its head. The series showcases Jerry's iconic design sense along with his sense of humor.

EAGLE TATTOOS

Eagles are symbols for America, representing honor, prowess and intelligence. For Sailor Jerry, as a patriot who was acutely aware of (and vocal about) the shortcomings of his country, the Eagle was a symbol of his idealized America. A country that stands with the courage of its convictions and backs down for no one. Jerry's eagle tattoos are fierce and iconic, often depicted in association with the flag.

Pin-up Girl Tattoos

Pin-up girls represent the ideal and extremes of femininity — from maidenly perfection to vixen-ish temptation. The woman inked on a sailor's arm would be the only feminine form he would see for months. Applying his bold, refined style to the pin-up, Sailor Jerry created what could be argued as the world's most iconic pin-up tattoos .

Ship Tattoos

For a sailor, ships are both practical and metaphorical. It's where you go for work – but also for meaning and adventure. Sailor Jerry loved ships and held master papers on every major type of vessel. His legendary clipper ship tattoos represent both the call to adventure and the determination to be "Homeward Bound". And they're eminently seaworthy – Jerry always inked his riggings to be nautically accurate.

Heart Tattoos

A sailor staring down a long stint at sea- including the possibility of not returning home-often wanted a heart tattoo to keep his loved ones close. Sometimes these hearts were just images. Other times, they read "Mom" or featured the name of a special girl. Hearts still remain one of the most popular tattoos for both sailors and civilians.

Nautical Star Tattoos

Representing the North Star (historically used by sailors use for navigation) a nautical star tattoo was believed to keep a sailor on course. As such, they were also considered to help guide a sailor home.

Pig and Rooster Tattoos

The superstition behind this tattoo has to do with the wooden cages where roosters and pigs were kept in on ships. When ships wrecked, the lightweight wooden frames became personal flotation devices, giving them a surprising survival rate. A sailor hoping for good luck would get a rooster tattoo on top of the right foot and a pig tattoo on top of the left.

Shellback Turtle Tattoos

Like a ship at full mast, a shellback tattoo showed a sailor's experience at sea. Once a sailor crossed the equator, he earned the right to get a turtle inked on his body. The longer someone had spent at sea, the more tattoos they could show off.

Meaning of Sailboat Tattoo: What is the Significance?

Sailboat tattoos can hold various meanings depending on the individual and their personal experiences or beliefs. Here are a few possible interpretations:

Adventure and Exploration

Sailboats have been a symbol of adventure and exploration for centuries, representing the spirit of discovery and the thrill of charting new waters. Sailors have long relied on the wind to power their vessels, bravely setting out into uncharted territories with little more than a sense of direction and a desire to explore.

A sailboat tattoo is often seen as a way to capture this spirit of adventure and exploration. It can be a powerful symbol of the desire to push past one’s boundaries, take risks, and embrace the unknown. Whether it’s the idea of sailing off into the sunset or simply the freedom to explore new possibilities, a sailboat tattoo can serve as a reminder to stay curious and keep pushing forward.

Meaning of Sailboat Tattoo: The Deeper Meanings Behind Popular Tattoo Designs

For many people, a sailboat tattoo represents a love of travel and the desire to see the world. It can be a way to honor a favorite sailing trip, commemorate a special destination, or simply express a passion for wanderlust. By choosing to wear a sailboat tattoo, an individual can communicate their adventurous spirit and willingness to explore new horizons.

But beyond just being a symbol of adventure, a sailboat tattoo can also represent personal growth and change. Just as a sailor must learn to navigate changing winds and tides, a person with a sailboat tattoo might see themselves as someone who is adaptable and open to new experiences. The tattoo can be a representation of their willingness to embrace challenges, take calculated risks, and chart their own course in life.

Freedom and Independence

A sailboat tattoo is a popular design that holds significant meaning for many individuals. The image of a sailboat gliding through the water with the wind as its guide can evoke a sense of freedom, adventure, and independence. This tattoo design often represents a desire to break free from limitations and live life on one’s own terms.

The sailboat itself is a symbol of exploration, discovery, and navigation. It represents a journey into the unknown, an adventure that requires courage and determination. The wind that propels the boat forward represents the power of nature and the forces that drive us forward in life. In this way, the sailboat tattoo can also be interpreted as a reminder to stay true to oneself, to trust in one’s own abilities, and to embrace the challenges and opportunities that come our way.

Meaning of Sailboat Tattoo: The Deeper Meanings Behind Popular Tattoo Designs

For some, the sailboat tattoo may also hold a deeper spiritual meaning. The act of sailing can be a meditative experience, as one becomes attuned to the rhythm of the waves and the movement of the boat. The sailboat can represent a journey towards self-discovery and enlightenment, a quest for inner peace and harmony.

Overall, the sailboat tattoo is a powerful symbol of freedom and independence, representing the desire to chart one’s own course in life. Whether as a reminder to stay true to oneself, a symbol of spiritual growth, or simply a celebration of adventure and exploration, this tattoo design holds a special place in the hearts of many.

Journey and Progress

A sailboat is a watercraft that is powered by the wind, and it has been used for thousands of years to transport goods and people across seas and oceans. The design of a sailboat tattoo can vary greatly, but it typically includes an image of a sailboat with its sails billowing in the wind.

The sailboat tattoo has a symbolic meaning that represents the idea of progress and moving forward in life. Just like a sailboat relies on the wind to move forward, we too rely on certain forces in our lives to propel us forward. These forces could be personal goals, achievements, relationships, or even challenges that we have overcome.

Meaning of Sailboat Tattoo: The Deeper Meanings Behind Popular Tattoo Designs

Choosing to get a sailboat tattoo might be a way to celebrate personal growth and achievements, as well as the obstacles that were overcome along the way. It’s an enduring reminder of one’s inner strength, resilience, and perseverance in overcoming challenges.

Additionally, a sailboat tattoo may also represent the desire for adventure and exploration. Sailing on the open sea can be exhilarating, and a sailboat tattoo can serve as a reminder to embrace new experiences and seek out opportunities for growth and personal development.

Overall, the sailboat tattoo is a powerful symbol that embodies the idea of progress, growth, resilience, and adventure. It’s a meaningful way to commemorate personal milestones and accomplishments while embracing the constant journey of self-improvement and exploration.

Nautical Lifestyle

Sailboat tattoos are a popular design choice among those who have a strong affinity for the sea, sailing, and the nautical lifestyle. These tattoos can represent a deep connection to the ocean and all that it encompasses, from the freedom of sailing on the open water to the sense of adventure and exploration that comes with being out at sea.

For sailors, a sailboat tattoo can symbolize their passion for the craft and the many hours spent navigating the waters. It can also serve as a reminder of the challenges and rewards that come with life at sea, including the camaraderie shared among crew members and the sense of accomplishment that comes with successfully completing a long voyage.

Meaning of Sailboat Tattoo: The Deeper Meanings Behind Popular Tattoo Designs

Similarly, for sea enthusiasts who may not necessarily be sailors themselves, a sailboat tattoo can signify their love for the ocean and the many adventures it offers. From surfing and swimming to diving and fishing, there are countless ways to enjoy the sea, and a sailboat tattoo can be a way to celebrate this connection.

Finally, for those who simply have a deep love for the ocean, a sailboat tattoo can serve as a symbol of their admiration for this vast and beautiful body of water. It can be a way to express a deep appreciation for the natural world and all that it has to offer, from the majesty of the waves to the mysteries of the deep.

Peace and Tranquility

A sailboat tattoo can hold a variety of meanings, but one interpretation that may resonate with individuals seeking a symbol of resilience and steadiness in the face of adversity is that of staying calm and composed during life’s storms.

Sailboats are often associated with freedom, adventure, and exploration. They are vessels that rely on the wind to propel them forward, requiring skillful navigation and adaptability to changing conditions. These qualities can serve as a powerful metaphor for navigating life’s challenges.

When the seas get rough and the winds pick up, a sailboat’s ability to stay upright and continue moving forward depends on the captain’s ability to remain steady and focused. In the same way, a person facing difficult circumstances can draw strength from the image of a sailboat, reminding themselves to stay calm and composed amidst the chaos.

Meaning of Sailboat Tattoo: The Deeper Meanings Behind Popular Tattoo Designs

The sailboat tattoo can also represent a sense of self-reliance and independence. Sailors must rely on their own skills and resourcefulness to navigate the open waters, and this can translate to a person’s ability to overcome obstacles and chart their own course in life.

Overall, a sailboat tattoo can be a powerful symbol of resilience and inner strength. It serves as a reminder to stay grounded and steady in the face of life’s storms, relying on one’s own abilities and determination to keep moving forward.

Memorial or Tribute

A sailboat tattoo is a powerful symbol that can hold deep meaning for those who have a connection to sailing or the sea. For many people, it represents freedom, adventure, and the thrill of being out on the water. It can also be a reminder of loved ones who shared this passion and may no longer be with us.

If someone has lost a loved one who had a connection to sailing or the sea, getting a sailboat tattoo can be a way to keep their memory alive and honor their legacy. It is a beautiful tribute that serves as a constant reminder of the person’s love for the ocean and their adventurous spirit.

The sailboat tattoo can be customized in many different ways to make it more personal and meaningful. The design can incorporate specific colors that were important to the loved one or include their name or initials somewhere in the tattoo. The image of the sailboat can also be combined with other symbols, such as an anchor or a compass, to further enhance its significance.

Meaning of Sailboat Tattoo: The Deeper Meanings Behind Popular Tattoo Designs

Aside from being a memorial or tribute to a loved one, a sailboat tattoo can also represent the wearer’s own connection to sailing or the sea. It can signify their love for the ocean and the freedom that comes with being out on the water. It can also serve as a reminder to take risks, embrace adventure, and live life to the fullest.

Overall, a sailboat tattoo is a powerful symbol that holds great meaning for those who have a connection to sailing or the sea. Whether it serves as a tribute to a loved one or as a reminder of one’s own passion for the ocean, it is a beautiful and timeless design that will always hold a special place in the wearer’s heart.

Metaphor for Life’s Journey

A sailboat tattoo is a popular design that symbolizes the journey of life. The voyage of a sailboat parallels the path we take in our lives, as we navigate through various challenges, face changing winds and ultimately reach our desired destinations. This tattoo can be interpreted as a metaphorical representation of life’s journey and the experiences that we encounter along the way.

The sailboat represents the vessel that carries us through life, guiding us on our journey towards our goals and aspirations. It reminds us that the journey may not always be smooth sailing, but with perseverance, we can overcome any obstacle that comes our way. The wind, which is an integral part of sailing, represents the forces that influence our lives, whether it be external or internal. These forces can steer us in new directions, create unexpected challenges and sometimes even propel us towards our destination.

Meaning of Sailboat Tattoo: The Deeper Meanings Behind Popular Tattoo Designs

The sailboat tattoo also signifies the importance of being adaptable and flexible in life. Just as a sailor adjusts the sails to catch the wind, we too must adjust and adapt to the changes that come our way. We must be prepared to change course when necessary, embrace new opportunities and learn from our mistakes along the way.

It’s important to note that tattoo meanings can be highly individual and can vary based on personal experiences and beliefs. If you’re considering getting a sailboat tattoo, take time to reflect on what the image means to you and how it aligns with your life story and aspirations.

In this guide, we’ll explore some ship tattoo ideas that can help you navigate the sea of tattoo designs and find the perfect one for you.

History of Ship Tattoos

In the 1700s and 1800s, sailors often got tattoos of ships to commemorate their journeys at sea. These tattoos were also a way for sailors to show their expertise and experience in sailing.

A sailor with a ship tattoo was someone who had been around the world and had likely seen things that few others at home had.

During the 19th century, ship tattoos became more popular and began to feature more intricate designs.

Sailors would often get tattoos of specific ships, such as the ship they served on or the ship that brought them home after a long journey.

Some sailors even got tattoos of famous ships from history, such as the HMS Victory or the USS Constitution.

In the early 20th century, ship tattoos continued to be popular among sailors. However, the designs began to evolve to include more abstract and artistic depictions of ships. The Sailor Jerry tattoo style was popularized at this time.

Sailors began to incorporate other nautical elements into their tattoos, such as anchors, mermaids, and compasses.

Today, ship tattoos are still popular among sailors and non-sailors alike. The designs have become even more elaborate and intricate, incorporating elements of realism and fantasy.

Some people get ship tattoos to honor their own sailing experiences, while others get them simply because they appreciate the beauty and symbolism of ships.

Regardless of the reason, ship tattoos remain a beloved and enduring symbol of the seafaring life.

The Biblical Meaning of Ships

Ships are mentioned throughout the Bible, and they can have different meanings depending on the context. Here are some of the mentions and what they can mean. Although like much in the Bible, it’s open to interpretation.

  • A means of transportation: In the Bible, ships were often used to transport people and goods across the sea. For example, in Acts 27, the Apostle Paul and his companions were shipwrecked on the island of Malta while sailing from Caesarea to Rome.
  • A symbol of prosperity: In the Old Testament, ships were often associated with trade and commerce, which were sources of wealth and prosperity. For example, in 1 Kings 10:22, it is said that King Solomon had a fleet of ships that brought him gold, silver, ivory, and apes from distant lands.
  • A symbol of salvation: In the New Testament, ships can symbolize salvation or deliverance. For example, in Matthew 14:22-33, Jesus walked on water and calmed the storm that was threatening the boat that his disciples were in. This demonstrated his power over nature and his ability to save those who put their trust in him.
  • A symbol of faith: In the Bible, ships can also symbolize faith or trust in God. For example, in Hebrews 11:7, Noah built an ark in faith, trusting that God would save him and his family from the flood.
  • A symbol of the church: In some interpretations, ships can symbolize the church, which is seen as a vessel that carries people to salvation. This idea is reflected in hymns like “Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me,” which compares Jesus to a pilot who guides the ship of the church through the storms of life.

Traditional and old school sailor tattoos.

“A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor”

boat hire marmaris turkey

The sea is one of the most dangerous and challenging environments for men and a good metaphor for life. It is not surprising then that the sailors were among the first to be tattooed, so as to ward off dangers and express their sailing experiences, personal and professional milestones. Their weakness for lead tattoos gave rise to strong growth in the art of tattooing, and the designs they favored are still coveted by sailors and non-sailors alike for their old-school beauty or their meaning.

ORIGIN OF THE SAILOR TATTOOS

It`s believed that the origin of the tattoos on European sailors dates back to the 17th century when  Captain James Cook  and his crew arrived in the South Pacific. They came across the native  Maori people , who had long used tattoos for identification or aesthetics, and brought back to Europe these tribal “memories” of the Pacific islands.

In the early 1900s, the United States government decided to put some regulations of tattooing, so they banned everyone with “an explicit” tattoos from joining the Navy. This situation was used by many young men to avoid serving, resulting in a boom in tattoos of nude women.

During the WW2, one of the most prominent names related to tattooing was Norman Collins, better known as Sailor Jerry. Imagine you are a sailor who is spending his last night in Honolulu before leaving for war to defend the interests of your country. It’s time to take advantage of the last few hours, get drunk, try to meet some woman and, of course, you tattoo yourself. Sailor Jerry was the one in charge of the last part. Collins managed to make a name in the history of tattooing. He had been a sailor (hence his nickname) and those motives were an inseparable part of his work: anchors,  knots , ships … Usually, small pieces that could be done fast to anyone passing by.

Most nautical tattoos were originally talismans for luck, as the sailors were very superstitious.

MEANINGS BEHIND THE SAILOR TATTOOS

Here is a list of the meanings behind the most common sailor tattoos.

The anchor is the oldest of marine tattoos, but also the most popular. It represents the link to the earth and has several meanings. The anchor connects the boat to the ground and prevents it from drifting. It is a sign of stability and strength, attachment, and security. Finally, the anchor tattoo was a symbol that was earned and was generally tattooed after the first crossing of the Atlantic. Crossed anchors on the webbing between the thumb and the index finger marked a bos`n or boatswain mate.

The ship symbolizes the journey and the first discoveries. It is a strong symbol and it was the privilege of sailors who had passed Cape Horn. It represents travel, freedom, adventure, the desire to discover new horizons, unlike the anchor, which materializes attachment and return. But it also symbolizes another less joyous ideology, that of the disappeared at sea and the danger represented by the latter. This meaning comes from the Viking culture, since going on a sail symbolized departure to war, but also the burial of the dead.

book2sail-swallow tattoo

The swallow is the most represented animal on the body of sailors. Symbol of luck, hope, travel, freedom and good news, it has many meanings. Starting with hope (and good news) since the sailors who saw a swallow could be certain that the land was not very far away. Sailors had one tattooed before going to sea, and one when they returned. If they died during their journey, the first swallow was supposed to bring their souls to paradise, so all that is also an idea of protection.

Others explain that sailors had a swallow tattooed after traveling 5,000 miles. A second swallow was drawn once reached the 10,000 miles.

MERMAID/SIREN:

The song of the  siren  was a superstition. It was thought that the beautiful lure of a siren’s voice would misguide a ship, and cause it to wreck, or pull a sailor into the sea to find her where he would drown. Having a mermaid tattoo protected against the dangers of the sea.

book2sail-mermaid tattoo

Often sailors wouldn’t see females for months so a pin-up served as a reminder of love left at home, or a sense of female company on an excursion.

PIG AND ROOSTER

book2sail-pig and rooster tattoo

Even though not associated with the sea, these two farm animals were often tattooed on the feet of sailors as good luck against drowning, or on the ones that survived a shipwreck. The rooster on the right side and the pig on the left side. There are several reasons to explain these drawings. The first: these animals were transported in wooden crates, able to float after a shipwreck. An old saying also says: “pig on the knee, safety at sea, cock on the right, never lose a fight.”

Though most of us are not sailors, we still navigate the stormy seas of life, counting distances, marking achievements and defying the odds. To inspire your next tattoo design, consider the meaning and symbolism of sailor and nautical tattoos.

Adventures are another symbol of the boats. The sailors used the boats to discover and conquer new territories. But they did that without any guarantee that they will return home. Also, many of them have lost and died in the seas, so it can also be a sign of respect for them.

The Meaning of Traditional Ship Tattoos

old school sailboat tattoo

The nautical themed tattoo has a place in the American traditional style, but it also has a long history across a variety of human cultures. Just think about how important seafaring has been to us as a species for a moment.

It has allowed us to explore the world, get in touch with new cultures, do important trade, and exchange ideas. The sea and the sailing ship, as an icon of human progress and curiosity, has deep cultural roots.

American Sailor Tattoos

old school sailboat tattoo

When Captain Cook explored the world, he came into contact with numerous indigenous cultures where body tattooing was widely practiced.

It would be easy to say that nautical tattoos in the West first had their start with the voyages of Captain Cook, but the reality is that seafaring cultures, including the Phoenicians, Egyptians, Greeks, Persians, and Romans, had all been in contact with cultures where body art was important.

old school sailboat tattoo

Even so, lots of American traditional tattoos derive their inspiration from the idea that explorers like Captain Cook popularized tattoos in the New World.

Thus, images of sailing ships, anchors, mythical sea creatures, and pretty ladies, came to be associated with sailors and anyone with a deep association with the sea.

old school sailboat tattoo

Indeed, even American sailors from over a century ago were sporting nautical themed tattoos almost as a badge of honor. Because of this, tattoos were also associated with sailors, and it wasn’t until the latter half of the 20th century that they became popular with other people.

These days, nautical tattoos aren’t just for men in the Navy – they are for men and women everywhere.

Old School Ship Tattoos

Traditionally, tattoos of sailing ships and other nautical images were performed with limited equipment. Indeed, back then the inks used were also quite rudimentary.

For this reason, such traditional tattoos often feature bold outlines and black or blue ink. They have a simple style to them that is also quite beautiful.

One early proponent of the American traditional tattoo style featuring nautical themes, such as ships, was Sailor Jerry. He had served in the US Navy and developed a traditional tattooing style that featured sailing ships, anchors, daggers, and so on.

Meaning of Traditional Ship Tattoos

old school sailboat tattoo

Given our long history with the sea and how important it has been to many human civilizations, it should be no surprise that the ship conveys a wide range of meanings.

Here are just some of the most common meanings of ship tattoos:

  • Courage, Bravery, and Independence
  • Exploration and New Beginnings
  • Challenges of Life

Myth of the Sea

old school sailboat tattoo

The sea can also be a dangerous place. Sudden storms can toss a ship around and cause injury and death. For our ancestors, the sea was also full of mythical creatures that could swallow sailors and even entire ships. Just think about the sea monster coiled around early sailing ships.

In this sense, the sea also represents our mythical imagination and the darker aspects of our consciousness. We know less about the oceans than any other place on the planet. This sense of mystery can be thrilling but it can also be dark and dangerous.

The sea as a symbol of both human frailty and human endeavor has been outlined in literature many times. The Old Man and the Sea, by Hemingway, is one of the most famous examples of the sea as something to overcome. It is a teacher that reveals itself slowly and challenges the narrator.

In this context, sailors have traditionally been seen as brave souls setting out on a journey that could take them to new lands. But it could also take them to their deaths.

The sailing ship was the vessel that carried them on this journey and is representative of human endeavor and ingenuity, but also of our frailty as a species in the face of Mother Nature’s primal power.

Should You Get a Traditional Ship Tattoo?

old school sailboat tattoo

The good news is that ship tattoos are not just for sailors any longer. Ships and nautical motifs have much more profound meanings that can appeal to men and women from any background.

Those who have a close affiliation with the sea and sailing may see the clear link, but ships have been important to humankind for millennia and continue to fire the imagination.

Some people may want a ship tattoo due to their links with the Navy, but it may also be appealing because they want to honor someone who was in the Navy or a family member who was lost at sea.

old school sailboat tattoo

Other people may find the mystery of the sea enticing. For them, the sailing ship symbolizes our struggles against life’s many challenges.

Just as we sail on troubled waters during a storm, we may also survive to sail on calmer waters with a greater knowledge of ourselves, just as Hemingway envisioned in his famous story.

old school sailboat tattoo

Many people also have other images right alongside their ship tattoo. It’s not uncommon to see birds, skulls, daggers, hearts, and palm trees decorating ship tattoos. Working out what you want and why is important.

Types of Ship Tattoo

You don’t just have to have a traditional sailing ship inked. There are quite a few types of ships to choose from. For something a little bit different, try out these ships:

Pirate Ship

The overriding meaning of the pirate ship is living outside of the normal rules of society. Pirates operate in a space that is not only outside of our normal societal rules, but they also take on the risks and challenges of the sea. This may appeal to those who find the idea of living outside of the normal rules enticing.

Viking Long Boat

Much like the pirate ship, the Viking Long Boat conveys a sense of foreboding. Vikings were the settlers and pirates of their day, and raided villages afar.

As such, the Viking Long Boat is appropriate for those who are attuned to the darker aspects of life. Having said that, A Viking ship is also a fantastic tattoo for those who have Nordic heritage.

The image of the ruined ghost ship, with tattered and torn sails, and new crew, symbolizes our sense of mortality. At sea, anything can happen, and as we face life’s challenges we are not always going to be sailing on calm or trouble-free waters.

The ghost ship is indicative of where we all finally end up on our journey and is a stark reminder of our own mortality and vulnerability.

The Meanings Behind 19 Classic Sailor Tattoos

old school sailboat tattoo

Over time, the symbolism associated with tattoos popular with U.S. Navy sailors has evolved, but they continue to hold significance for those with a connection to the sea and maritime culture. Examples include the nautical star, the anchor, and swallows.

These days, tattoos are so commonplace in the U.S. military that every branch has its own policy as part of its uniform regulations, but a few years ago that wasn’t the case. The U.S. Navy, however, has a long tradition of tattoos.

Here’s the meaning behind a few of the classics:

1. Fully-Rigged Ships

old school sailboat tattoo

A tattoo of a fully-rigged ship from the age of sail means the sailor had been around Cape Horn, the rough, stormy waters around the southern tip of South America. A fully-rigged ship is one with three or more masts, square sails fully deployed.

2. Nautical Star

old school sailboat tattoo

The star is a symbol of a sailor always to be able to find his way home. The nautical star is a five-pointed star in dark and light shades counterchanged to resemble a compass rose.

3. Shellback Turtle

old school sailboat tattoo

Sailors can wear the Shellback Turtle when they get initiated into King Neptune’s Court after crossing the equator. If you’re unsure what exactly this means, We Are The Mighty has an explainer for you:

4. Crossed Cannons

old school sailboat tattoo

The crossed cannons mean a veteran has seen military service as a sailor.

5. Swallows

old school sailboat tattoo

Sailors earn a new swallow tattoo for every 5,000 nautical miles traveled, which is about 5,754 regular miles, roughly the distance between New York City and Tel Aviv. The circumference of the earth is 21,639 nautical miles, just about 4.16 sparrows.

old school sailboat tattoo

7. Rope on the Wrist

old school sailboat tattoo

A knot of rope on a sailors wrist identifies him as a deckhand, someone who maintains the hull, decks, superstructure, mooring, and cargo handling. Deckhands are still common in ocean-going vessels, though they’re far less likely to be maintaining wooden ships.

8. Hula Girl

old school sailboat tattoo

Hula girls signify the sailor has been to Hawaii.

9. Crossed Anchors

old school sailboat tattoo

Sailors wearing the crossed anchors on the webbing between their thumb and index finger are identifying themselves as boatswain’s mates, the guys who maintain the deck and take care of smaller boat operations and damage control parties.

10. HOLD and FAST

old school sailboat tattoo

These words are a charm spelled out on the four front-facing fingers on each hand. Sailors hope it brings them good luck while gripping the rigging. Holding fast means the sailor isn’t going to let the line go, no matter what. Sailors were a superstitious bunch and life on a sailing ship was tough (to say the least). Anything that gave them the edge in saving their own lives was worth doing.

11. Pig and Rooster

old school sailboat tattoo

The foot tattoos of pigs and roosters were worn by sailors in WWII in the hopes it would keep the sailor from drowning. The Navy shipped these animals in crates at the time. When ships went down, the crates floated, and the animals inside would sometimes be the only survivors.

12. Compass Rose

old school sailboat tattoo

Another good luck charm that allows a sailor to find his way home.

13. Crosses

Worn on the soles of a sailor’s feet, these are thought to ward off sharks.

14. Dagger through a Rose

old school sailboat tattoo

This tattoo means the sailor is loyal and willing to fight anything, even something as sweet and beautiful as a rose.

Wearing a dragon means the sailor has served in China.

16. Golden Dragon

old school sailboat tattoo

When a sailor crossed the International Date Line, he earns the right to wear the Golden Dragon tattoo. The International Date Line is the imaginary line of longitude that separates two calendar dates. When someone sails from East to West, they set their clock back one hour for every 15 degrees of longitude they pass. When they pass the date line, they’ve gained a full 24 hours.

17. Harpoon

old school sailboat tattoo

Sailors tattooed with harpoons were serving or had served in a whaling or fishing fleet.

18. King Neptune

old school sailboat tattoo

German sailors in the 1930s being addressed by King Neptune while “crossing the line.”

Another badge of honor earned for crossing the Equator.

19. Palm Tree

old school sailboat tattoo

The palm tree has two meanings, depending on your navy. Sailors in the Royal Navy during World War II could wear it after sailing on Mediterranean cruises. It can also be worn by U.S. sailors who served in Hawaii.

Mother of shooting suspect had been arrested on family violence count last year

The mother of the 14-year-old suspect in Wednesday’s shooting was arrested last year on a charge that involved family violence, court records show.

Marcee Gray pleaded guilty in December to one count each of second-degree criminal damage of property and criminal trespass-family violence, online records in Barrow County show.

An original warrant that could have more details was not available on the court’s website Thursday night.

A sentencing record shows that Gray was ordered to have no contact with Colin Gray, the father of the suspected school shooter, except through a third party on matters that involved the children or a divorce.

Biden says 'we need more than thoughts and prayers,' calls for new gun laws

President Joe Biden today said that while he supports the Second Amendment, he called on Congress to ban what he termed assault weapons following yesterday's deadly high school shooting.

"As a nation, we cannot continue to accept the carnage of gun violence,” Biden said today in Wisconsin. "I’m a gun owner, I believe strongly in the amendment, but we need more than thoughts and prayers."

"Some of my Republican friends in Congress just have to finally say 'enough is enough, we have to do something.' Together, let’s ban assault weapons," Biden said. The 14-year-old suspect in the shooting at Apalachee High School was armed with an AR-15 style rifle, according to arrest warrants.

Father of suspect bought AR-style gun for son as gift, sources say

The father of the 14-year-old Apalachee High School shooting suspect bought his son an AR-style rifle as a gift after they were questioned last year about online threats, two law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation told NBC News.

The date of the purchase was not clear.

The FBI said it received tips about online threats to commit a school shooting in May 2023, and that the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office investigated the Grays.

When investigators interviewed the then 13-year-old suspect last year about the online threats, he denied them, the FBI and sheriff’s office said in a statement.

“The father stated he had hunting guns in the house, but the subject did not have unsupervised access to them,” the two law enforcement agencies said.

Father's arrest follows first-ever prosecution of parents in Michigan school shooting

Colin Gray's arrest comes months after James and Jennifer Crumbley became the first parents ever to be prosecuted and convicted for a school shooting committed by their child.

Gray, the father of the Apalachee High School shooting suspect, is alleged to have knowingly allowed his son to possess a weapon, the director of the GBI said.

In the Crumbley's case, the parents were convicted of involuntary manslaughter and other counts for the school shooting carried out by their then-15-year-old son, Ethan.

Ethan Crumbley killed four students and injured others when he opened fire at Oxford High School in Michigan in 2021.

The prosecutor in the Crumbley case argued that James Crumbley bought his son the 9 mm Sig Sauer that was used in the school shooting, and that both parents failed to secure the weapon or take steps that could have prevented the shooting.

Charges against father ‘directly connected with the actions of his son,’ GBI director says

The charges against the father of the 14-year-old suspect are “directly connected” to his son's actions, the GBI director said.

“His charges are directly connected with the actions of his son and allowing him to possess a weapon,” GBI Director Chris Hosey said.

Hosey would not say whether Gray gave his son the gun, just that he "knowingly allowed" him to possess it.

The suspect was armed with an AR-15 style semiautomatic rifle, arrest warrants for the 14-year-old say.

Some of injured victims released from the hospital

Several of the nine people injured in Wednesday’s shooting remain hospitalized and some have been released, Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith said.

"All nine people that are injured are expected to make a full recovery," Smith said.

Four people, two students and two adults, were also killed in the shooting at Apalachee High School.

Father’s charges stem from allowing son to have weapon

The charges against Colin Gray, the father of the 14-year-old school shooting suspect revolve around the gun, GBI Director Chris Hosey said today.

“These charges stem from Mr. Gray knowingly allowing his son Colt to possess a weapon,” Hosey said at a news conference.

Father of suspected shooter arrested

The father of the 14-year-old suspect in Wednesday’s high school shooting has been arrested on charges that include involuntary manslaughter.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation made the announcement on X and said a news conference will be held at 8 p.m. ET to discuss the matter.

Colin Gray, 54, was arrested on four counts of involuntary manslaughter; two counts of second degree murder; and eight counts of cruelty to children, the bureau said.

Suspect was armed with ‘black, semi-automatic AR-15 style rifle,’ warrant says

Arrest warrants for the 14-year-old suspect say he was armed with a “black, semi-automatic AR-15 style rifle.”

The four warrants are for felony murder, one for each of the four victims who were killed — two 14-year-old students and two teachers.

The director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has previously described the gun as an “AR platform-style weapon.”

Suspect’s family is cooperating, sheriff says

The family of the suspect in the Apalachee High School shooting has been cooperating with investigators, Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith said.

“I will say that his family is pretty much cooperating with anything we’ve asked with. Because they realize the seriousness of this,” he said in an interview with NBC News.

The 14-year-old suspect had enrolled in Barrow County School District around two weeks ago, and Wednesday was his second day of school. A motive in the shooting remains unclear.

School system says it is focused on the injured and the grieving

Juliette Arcodia

The Barrow County School System said it is focusing on "those injured, hurting, and grieving" following the death of two students and two teachers at Apalachee High School.

"We cannot thank the community and the entire State of Georgia enough for the outpouring of support we have received," the district said in a statement today.

It went on to say that Barrow County School System is there to support all its students, families and staff.

Students at Georgia high school describe ‘haunting moment’ after suspect opened fire

WINDER, Ga. — Sophomore Cameron Leroy was in class Wednesday when an unfamiliar noise pulsated from the hallway just after 10 a.m.

When it didn’t stop, his teacher at  Apalachee High School  took action: He ordered students to crouch down in the corners of the classroom. He turned off the lights, locked the door and propped up a large touchscreen board to block the entrance.

For 30 terrifying minutes, the students hid motionless, and Leroy prayed for safety as the barrage of gunfire was eventually replaced by emergency sirens and the shouts of police officers.

“It was this very haunting moment for everyone,” Leroy, 15, said on NBC News Now.

Once home, he said, he was “still in a state of shock.” But the chaotic events sunk in when he learned one of those killed was  Richard Aspinwall, his geometry teacher and an assistant football coach .

Teacher 'felt like death was in the room' as he prepared to defend his students

Stephen Kreyenbuhl, an Apalachee social studies teacher, said his classroom was just near yesterday's shooting.

Teachers at the school are all equipped with a panic button on the back of their ID badges, a measure that was triggered for the first time after a gunman opened fire at the high school.

Kreyenbuhl said he followed protocol and then prepared to either defend himself and his students with a pair of scissors in his back pocket or worse.

“I definitely felt like death was in the room for a second,” he said. “I did accept the fact that I might die.”

New panic alarm system at Georgia H.S. saved lives during shooting, officials say. Advocates want it nationwide.

A new panic alarm system that was triggered during the deadly shooting likely saved countless lives, authorities and advocates for the technology said.

Lockdown warnings flashed on classroom screens at Apalachee High School as gunshots rang out, prompting students and teachers to lock the door, turn off the lights and huddle in the farthest corner from the entrance, witnesses said.

At the same time, alerts automatically went out to law enforcement officers, who responded and ended the shooting rampage within minutes, according to Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith and Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Chris Hosey.

“The protocols at this school and this system activated today prevented this from being a much larger tragedy,” Hosey said at a news conference Wednesday night.

Gov. Kemp orders all state flags lowered to half-staff

Flags will be lowered to half-staff in honor of the shooting victims, per an executive order signed today by Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp.

As a mark of respect, the flags will remain lowered from today until sunset on the date "of the final victim's interment," according to the order. Kemp posted a copy of the order's language on his X account.

"The people of Georgia share the grief of the parents, families and friends of those who were injured or killed, and we pray for their comfort and healing in the days to come," it said.

Suspect had shown interest in past shootings, including Parkland

The 14-year-old suspect had shown interest in previous mass shootings, particularly the 2018 attack in Parkland, Florida, said two senior law enforcement officials briefed on the investigation.

The shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School killed 17 people and injured 17 others.

The information came to light from searches conducted in the investigation.

Autopsies to be performed today

The autopsies of the four victims in the Apalachee High School shooting will be performed today, officials said.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said their work is continuing and asked for the public's patience in receiving more information.

Colt Gray charged with 4 counts of felony murder

Colt Gray, the 14-year-old suspect in the Apalachee High School shooting, has been charged with four counts of felony murder, the Georgia Bureau of investigation said Thursday afternoon.

His first appearance will be tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m.

What could have been done to prevent suspect from opening fire under Georgia law?

Given Georgia’s mix of gun laws, it is difficult to say if anything could have been done to stop the 14-year-old suspect from opening fire at Apalachee High School yesterday.

The Gun: Officials have said the shooter used an AR-style weapon. Georgia law does not have a minimum age for possessing or carrying a rifle. However, the age to purchase a rifle is 18, under the Gun Control Act. It would, however, have been illegal if he used a handgun as one must be 18 to use one.

The FBI tip: An FBI tip into the suspect last year was passed on to and investigated by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office in Georgia. In that probe, investigators spoke with the suspect and his father. However, according to the incident report, it appeared the sheriff’s office found no crime warranting arrest had been committed or didn’t find the suspect, then 13, to be a threat. He could have been tracked long term by the sheriff’s office, but that would depend on available resources and if the suspect kept posting threats.

ERPO laws: Georgia lacks an Extreme Risk Protective Order statute, commonly known as a red flag law , under which law enforcement can request a court to order that guns be removed from a person or home. Authorities have said that the suspect’s father had hunting guns in the home when the FBI tip was investigated last year. Currently, 21 states have ERPO laws.

Georgia’s child services agency: The state's Department of Family and Children services had contact with the suspect and his family, the GBI said yesterday. This raises questions about what the department knew about the suspect, any additional threats or mental health evaluations and if more intervention could have been done. However, without an ERPO law, it's likely little could’ve been done to remove guns from the home.

Was this preventable? 'It's hard to say,' Sheriff says

Priya Sridhar

Natalie Obregon

When asked if the shooting was preventable, Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith said it's hard to say.

The 14-year-old suspect had been investigated following an FBI tip regarding a potential threat to shoot up a middle school last year.

“I feel confident that the FBI, the system worked,” Smith said Thursday.

“They notified local authorities, local authorities went to the house, interviewed him, interviewed his father, they did a report, they did what they were supposed to do, and found that there was no probable cause,” he continued. “Regardless of the situation, all of us have civil rights. He didn’t commit a crime. ... It was unfounded at the time, and so can anything be preventable? I don’t know. It’s hard to say.”

'It was carnage': Sheriff describes school shooting scene

Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith said upon arriving at Apalachee High School yesterday, what he found “was carnage.”

“There was blood everywhere. You smell the gunpowder. A lot of screaming, yelling, little bit of chaos.”

There were two school resource officers stationed at the school, as well as a sergeant who happened to be there, who immediately responded to the suspect. Smith said he “could not be prouder” of those officers, EMS, the fire department, as well as the “hero” teachers who lost their lives protecting students.

Speaking on first responders, he said: “They backed up the building, loaded kids up, tourniqueting folks, and those nine people that were injured are living today, and they expect to live,” he said. Most of the injured have been released from the hospital and two or three require more recovery time.

“Our heart breaks and goes out to the families of the four victims that were killed and murdered. That’s what this is — a murder. But we’re glad that we were able to prevent more,” he said

He noted that the sheriff's office had done an active school shooter drill last school year at a local middle school.

“Emotionally, it’s hard because I feel like this, that Colt Gray moved here, he took advantage of the system and thought that he could get away with it and didn’t," Smith said of the 14-year-old shooting suspect, who was new to the school.

Calling the teen "an evil person," the sheriff added: "But like I said, love is going to prevail over what happened, and I’ll do everything in my power to make sure that happens."

Suspect launched shooting on his second day at Apalachee High School

The suspected shooter was a brand new student, and yesterday was his first "real day" of class, Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith said.

“He was a brand new student to Barrow County Schools, he had enrolled about two weeks prior. This was his second day at school. He had been before, he left early, on that day and this was his first real full day,” Smith said referring to the shooting yesterday. Aug. 1 was the first day of school for the district.

Prior, the suspect had been at a local middle school, Smith said. According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office incident report from 2023, Colt Gray had previously attended Jefferson Middle School and prior to that West Jackson Middle School.

Suspect was in custody within 6 minutes of first security alert

The 14-year-old suspect in the Apalachee High School shooting yesterday was in custody just six minutes after the school's safety alert system went off.

Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith told NBC's Priya Sridhar that the county had invested in a notification system called Centegix last year and implemented it just a week and a half ago. With the system, teachers have a button on their badge they can press in an emergency that sends their GPS coordinates to law enforcement.

“We got multiple notifications as the shooting was going on from the teachers where to respond in that general area,” Smith said.

The school’s school resource officers had also radioed for help and took action.

“They come around the hallway — they were armed, obviously he was — they interacted with him, they gave him verbal commands, he dropped the gun and went on the ground and they took him into custody immediately. They’re telling me within six minutes of the first Centegix hit that he was in custody by that time,” Smith said.

Suspect will have first court appearance tomorrow

Colt Gray will have his first court appearance tomorrow at 8:30 a.m., according to the Georgia Department of Corrections. He will appear virtually from the Gainesville Youth Detention Center, where he is being held.

Suspect spoke with investigator about potential shooting threat on Discord account last year

Last May, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office received a tip from the FBI regarding a possible threat to shoot up a middle school that came from a Discord chat group, and interviewed Colt Gray and his father, Colin.

On May 21, an investigator looking into the tip went to the Grays' home in Jefferson, Georgia. Colin told the investigator that he didn’t have a Discord account, and his son, who was 13 at the time, said he had deleted his.

“Colt expressed concern that someone is accusing him of threatening to shoot up a school, stating that he would never say such a thing, even in a joking manner,” the incident report obtained by NBC News said.

The father told the investigator he had hunting rifles in the home, and Colt was “allowed to use them when supervised, but does not have unfettered access to them,” the report said.

Three tips had come to the FBI from different IP addresses — two from different California cities and one from western Australia. The tip said that the Discord account was associated with the email “ [email protected] ” which was owned by Colt Gray, according to the FBI’s information. IP addresses from the account showed it was used in two different Georgia cities and possibly from Buffalo, New York.

Included in the tip were several photo attachments that showed a user profile name written in Russian — which when translated spelled the name Lanza, referring to the Sandy Hook elementary school shooter.

When confronted about it, Colin Gray said he didn’t know the email associated with the account and said his son doesn’t know Russian. The investigator reported that Colin said his son had “some problems at West Jackson Middle School and now that he is going to Jefferson Middle School it has gotten better.”

Ultimately due to the “inconsistent nature” of the FBI information, it couldn’t be substantiated whether Colt or Colin were behind the Discord account.

Shooter used AR-style weapon

The 14-year-old suspect used an “AR platform-style weapon” during the shooting, the director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigations said.

The exact model of gun was not specified. Bureau Director Chris Hosey said that the investigation is still fluid and active.

Last year, when the suspect was investigated in connection with online threats, his father told investigators in an interview that he had hunting guns in the home but that his son did not have unsupervised access to them, the FBI’s Atlanta field office said in a joint statement with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

Over 140 Ukrainian drones targeted multiple Russian regions overnight, including Moscow and surrounding areas, killing at least one person and injuring eight, officials said Tuesday, in one of the biggest drone attacks on Russian soil in the 2 1/2-year war .

A woman died in the town of Ramenskoye, just outside Moscow, where drones hit two multistory residential buildings and started fires, Moscow region Gov. Andrei Vorobyov said. Five residential buildings were evacuated due to falling drone debris, Vorobyov said.

The attack also prompted the authorities to shut three airports just outside Moscow — Vnukovo, Domodedovo and Zhukovsky — forcing 48 flights to be diverted to other airports, according to Russia’s civil aviation authority, Rosaviatsia.

The first two airports, which are Russia's second- and third-busiest, reopened in the morning but Zhukovsky was still closed in the afternoon because law enforcement officers were dealing with drone debris there, an airport spokesperson told the Interfax news agency.

It was the second massive Ukrainian drone attack on Russia this month. On Sept. 1, the Russian military said it intercepted 158 Ukrainian drones over more than a dozen Russian regions in what Russian media described as the biggest Ukrainian drone barrage since the start of the war. Russia’s Investigative Committee announced a criminal investigation into what it described as a terror attack.

Russia has pummeled Ukraine with missiles, glide bombs and its own drones, killing over 10,000 civilians since the war began in 2022, according to the United Nations.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian air force said Russia launched 46 Shahed drones and two missiles at Ukraine overnight. The air force said it downed 36 of the drones.

Ukraine has invested a lot of effort in developing domestic drone production, extending drones' range, payload and uses. It has increasingly utilized drone blitzes to slow Russia's war machine, disrupt Russian society and provoke the Kremlin.

Ukrainian officials have complained that weapons pledged by the country’s Western partners fall short of what their military needs and commonly arrive long after promised. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged defense companies to increase their output.

On the battlefield's 1,000-kilometer (600-mile) front line, Ukrainian troops are up against Russia's larger and better-equipped army. The two sides are especially contesting parts of eastern Ukraine's Donetsk region , fighting over towns and villages that are bombed-out wrecks, while Ukraine last month launched a bold incursion into Russia's Kursk border region.

In Moscow on Monday night, drone debris fell on a private house on the outskirts of the city, but no one was hurt, Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said. He counted over a dozen drones heading toward Moscow that were shot down by air defenses as they were approaching the city.

Overall, Russia’s Defense Ministry said it “intercepted and destroyed” 144 Ukrainian drones over nine Russian regions, including those on the border with Ukraine and those deeper inside Russia.

Ukrainian officials declined to comment on the attack.

As the war drags on, Russian President Vladimir Putin has been expanding his alliances:

The Russian military on Tuesday began massive naval and air drills , involving over 90,000 troops and over 400 warships, that China will also take part in, the Defense Ministry said.

Putin is also beefing up his military arsenal with Iranian ballistic missiles , the United States and Britain said Tuesday.

Moscow and the surrounding region have often come under attack throughout the war.

In May 2023, Russian officials said Ukraine tried to attack the Kremlin with drones which lightly damaged the roof of the palace that includes one of Putin's official residences.

In August 2023, a drone attack on Moscow's prestigious business district blew out part of a section of windows on a high-rise building and sent glass cascading to the streets, unsettling Muscovites. The attacks exposed gaps in the city and region's air defenses.

Ukraine war latest: Russia issues warning about 'combining potential' with China

Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping agreed in May to deepen what they called their "comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation" for a new era - now Russia says it and China could "combine their potential" if faced with aggression.

That's all for our live updates today.

UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy and US secretary of state Antony Blinken are due to host a news conference later this afternoon.

In the event of any major developments, we will bring you up to date.

Within the last hour, Mr Lammy has announced the UK will provide Ukraine with over £600m worth of support, in the form of humanitarian aid and loan guarantees delivered by the World Bank.

His joint visit to Kyiv alongside Mr Blinken marked the first time two senior diplomats have made a similar trip in 10 years.

During the visit, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal asked for the UK's "help and support" in allowing Ukraine to use long-range equipment to strike deep inside Russia.

Ukraine are desperately seeking weapons restrictions to be eased after Mr Blinken accused Iran of providing Russia with Fath-360 short-range ballistic missiles , which he said would be used by Moscow "within weeks".

Both Russia and Iran have called the claims "baseless", but  satellite imagery analysed by the Sky News Data & Forensics team appears to have captured a Russian-flagged cargo ship suspected of transporting ballistic missiles from Iran docked at a port in Russia a week ago.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said a "victory plan" he wants to present to Joe Biden later this month could push Russia to end its war diplomatically.

The Ukrainian leader said the plan would work to strengthen Kyiv and have a "psychological" impact on Moscow, but did not give any further details.

He told Kyiv's annual Crimean Platform event that the plan would need to be presented to Ukraine's allies before a second international summit on peace that he wants to hold later this year.

"If partners support it [the plan], it will make it easier for Ukraine to force Russia to end the war," he said.

UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy has announced over £600m worth of support for Ukraine.

The support will provide £242m for humanitarian needs and $484m (£371m) in loan guarantees delivered by the World Bank to support vital public services, including keeping schools and hospitals open, paying civil servants, and funding pensions.

Mr Lammy said: "Alongside the US, we are committed to giving Ukraine what it needs to resist Russia's illegal invasion.

"Their fight for freedom, liberty and democracy is also a fight for British security, European security, and global security. With the US, we stand firmly with Ukraine for as long as it takes."

UK Defence Secretary John Healey earlier announced that hundreds of additional air defence missiles, tens of thousands of additional artillery ammunition rounds, and more armoured vehicles will be delivered to Ukraine by the end of the year.

Mr Lammy will officially announce the support package during a news conference this afternoon alongside US secretary of state Antony Blinken.

The pair have been on a joint diplomatic trip to Kyiv where they have met with senior Ukrainian officials, including President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Three women have been killed and five others injured during Russian attacks in eastern Ukraine, prosecutors have said.

Russian troops reportedly shelled the residential area of Kostiantynivka, a town in the Donetsk region, which is around 14km (nine miles) from the frontline.

Two of those killed were elderly women, the prosecutor's general office wrote on the Telegram messaging app.

A middle-aged woman was then reportedly killed in a strike in a separate residential area. Five people were injured.

For context: The Donetsk region, which Russian troops partially occupy, regularly comes under Russian shelling and airstrikes.

Moscow denies targeting civilians or civilian infrastructure in its invasion of Ukraine, although thousands of people have been killed in its attacks.

The UK Foreign Office has summoned Iran's charge d'affaires over the transfer of ballistic missiles to Russia.

It said the UK government "was clear in that any transfer of ballistic missiles to Russia would be seen as a dangerous escalation and would face a significant response".

Earlier, Iran's foreign minister Abbas Araghchi wrote on X that Tehran had not delivered any ballistic missiles to Russia and sanctions imposed on Iran by the US, Britain, Germany and France would not solve any problems between them.

"Once again, US and E3 act on faulty intelligence and flawed logic," he said.

"Iran has NOT delivered ballistic missiles to Russia. Period... Sanctions are not a solution, but part of problem."

Russia has also refuted claims by US secretary of state Antony Blinken that it had received ballistic missiles from Iran.

Hollywood actor Michael Douglas has been pictured in Kyiv, where he is visiting with his son.

The Academy Award winner is in the Ukrainian capital to attend the First Ladies and Gentlemen Summit - an event organised by Olena Zelenska, which is due to take place tomorrow, according to local media reports.

Kyiv's department of tourism and promotions wrote on Facebook that the actor visited various sites around the city, including St Andrew's Church.

"The guest of honour was impressed by the beauty of the architecture of our beloved city, and was also actively interested in the historical events that took place in Kyiv," the department said.

It added that Douglas has "actively supported Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale invasion".

Russia and China could "combine their potential" if faced with aggression, Moscow's foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has said.

It comes after Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping agreed in May to deepen what they called their "comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation" for a new era.

In a weekly briefing to reporters, Ms Zakharova was asked about a possible deployment of US missiles in Japan.

It was reported the US had expressed an interest in deploying a Typhon mid-range missile system to Japan for joint military exercises.

"I would like to remind you that Moscow and Beijing will respond to 'double containment' by the United States with 'double counteraction'," Ms Zakharova said.

"It is clear that both Russia and China will react to the emergence of additional and very significant missile threats, and their reaction will be far from being political, which has also been repeatedly confirmed by the two countries.

"Our relations are not directed against third countries... and double counteraction does not contradict this. This is a defensive position, this is not an initiative to target other countries.

"But if an aggressive policy of attack is being implemented against us from one centre, why don't we combine our potential and give an appropriate rebuff?"

Earlier (see our 11.59pm post) we reported that China would join Russia in large-scale naval exercises.

China confirmed the two countries' navies would cruise together in the Pacific but gave no further details.

The two countries have not declared a formal military alliance, although Mr Putin last week described them as "allies in every sense of the word".

As we have been reporting, the US has said it believes the Russian military has received shipments of Iranian Fath-360 ballistic missiles.

Both Iran and Russia have denied the claims.

But what exactly is the Fath-360 missile and how would the Russians go about using it?

The Fath-360, also known as BM-120, was announced on Iran's Army Day in April 2022.

Built by Iran, it is small and lightweight, allowing several of them to be placed on truck-based launchers.

With four fins at the end, there are four further triangular fins just above them and four small ones near the tip of the missile.

They have a range of 19 to 75 miles, can carry a 150kg warhead and can be launched at a speed of Mach 3 (2,300mph - three times the speed of sound).

The missiles connect to satellites after being launched so they can hit targets at a speed of Mach 4 (3,069mph).

It is believed the Iranians are using the Russian's GLONASS satellite navigation system, which provides an alternative to GPS.

Satellite imagery has captured a Russian-flagged cargo ship suspected of transporting ballistic missiles from Iran docked at a port in Russia a week ago.

A Ukrainian source told Sky News the Port Olya 3 vessel had shipped 225 short-range ballistic missiles via the Caspian Sea to Russia to be used for its war in Ukraine.

The source said the ship arrived at the Russian port on 4 September.

Satellite imagery analysed by the Sky News Data & Forensics team pictures the vessel on that day at Port Olya in the region of Astrakhan, in southern Russia, by the Caspian Sea.

Ship tracking data shows the Port Olya 3 had been at the Iranian port of Amirabad just six days earlier, on 29 August.

After arriving in Russia, the Ukrainian source said it is believed the Fatah-360 ballistic missiles - with a range of more than 70 miles - were loaded on to a large cargo train.

The image of the ship at the port - captured by a Maxar satellite - was taken at 0751 UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) on 4 September.

Two days later another satellite image shows the ship had left the port.

The limited tracking data available shows the Port Olya 3 regularly travels between Iran and Russia. It is not clear where the ballistic missiles were taken once they arrived at the Russian port.

Responding, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said he had seen the report, but not all such reports were correct.

The Ukrainian prime minister has asked for the UK's "help and support" in allowing Ukraine to use long-range equipment to strike deep inside Russia.

In a meeting with David Lammy, the UK's foreign minister, Denys Shmyhal said: "We hope that long-range equipment for strikes on the territory of our enemy will be reached and we will have it.

"We hope for your help and support in this issue."

Yesterday, Mr Shmyhal said if Ukraine were allowed to destroy military targets or weapons prepared by Russia for attacks "it would certainly bring more safety for our civilians, our people, and our children".

Ukraine's desire for the weapons has heightened after Mr Blinken accused Iran yesterday of providing Russia with Fath-360 short-range ballistic missiles, which he said would be used by Moscow "within weeks".

Both Russia and Iran have called the claims "baseless".

Mr Shmyhal said he and Mr Lammy also spoke about the supply of air defence systems and the situation in the country's energy sector, which continues to be the target of intense Russian drone and missile attacks.
