The berth is lit by twin reading lights. At the foot of the bed is a 5-drawer cabinet which is next to a cedar lined hanging locker. Opposite to port is a single bed with 6-drawers beneath. At the food of the bunk is a hanging locker. In addition there is a seat at the head of the single bunk with storage beneath. Above is a large custom chart storage case that folds down. Each bunk is served by fans, lights, and air conditioning. Against the aft bulkhead is a large yachting print, which conceals a writing desk containing a magazine rack and letter storage. There are drawers beneath. Additional lighting is provided with four ports and two deck prisms. A raised large overhead hatch also provides excellent natural ventilation and lighting. All cabins are bright, spacious, and exhibit quality woodwork. Aft and up a couple of steps through a watertight bulkhead door to a landing provides access to the master head to port and engine room ladder to starboard. The head is semicircular with a water closet, fixtures, shower, sink, storage, and tile counter top. Up a couple of steps to the main salon / galley area       Guest Stateroom Beginning forward on centerline is the guest head with shower, vanity and sink. Aft of the forward head through a door is the guest stateroom containing four berths: upper and lower to port and starboard. At the forward end of each berth is a large hanging locker with shelf above. Each bunk has individual lee cloths in blue and white. Adjacent to the front of the bunks are small tables and cabinets. The floor is covered with a gray carpet. At the aft bulkhead is a ladder to a large "scuttle" deck hatch which exits to the foredeck. Each bunk has its own reading light and fan, and the cabin is air conditioned. There are four ports with fans for ventilation and two deck prisms. There is a watertight bulkhead door going from this stateroom to the master.       Salon The salon is aft of the galley with a large L-shaped settee dinette area to starboard with a beautifully handcrafted dining table. Forward of the settee is a cabinet with storage and AC vent with controls. Next to the end of the galley with a bulkhead on centerline contains the Northern Lights S-3C generator monitoring panel. To port opposite is a complete entertainment center with a Magnavox (flat screen) TV  raising and lowering from a lovely wood cabinet. In the port aft quarter of the main salon is a small cabinet. A Dutch door opens to the aft deck, which provides additional outdoor seating. The interior is accented in white varnished trim, blue covers and a gray carpet. Light flows aboard via large windows port and starboard that have been double paneled with mini-blinds sandwiched in the glass and also in the aft window behind the dinette, plus several lamps and recessed lighting. The entire area is air conditioned.       Head Starting forward on the accommodation level is the guest head which contains a water closet, shower, mirror, vanity, sink, ample storage and a tiled countertop. Two fixed ports and a deck prism provide additional lighting and a Dorade, fresh air ventilation. A second head is on the landing level area to port that is opposite the engine room entrance.       Galley The galley is on the port side in the main salon deck level area that has an athwartship passageway which exits on either end to the outside deck walkaround via Dutch doors. Against the forward bulkhead is a holding plate refrigerator and freezer system of 22 cubic feet. There are two 110-volt compressors that service the unit; a primary and backup system. Adjacent is a 3-burner propane stove with a microwave above. Facing aft is a white tiled countertop that is open to the main salon. There are twin stainless steel sinks, ample storage, spice and dish storage, and lighting above.       Pilothouse From the athwartship passageway next to the galley is a 4-step companionway on starboard up to the enclosed pilothouse, which runs the full width of the superstructure. Behind the helm is a large settee with storage beneath, a monitoring TV and bookrack above, and five opening pocket windshield windows. In the port quarter is a large custom chart table. There is a wing door to port. The door leads to the top sundeck with seating and storage area. The port door also leads to a ladder to the main foredeck. The pilothouse is air conditioned, has stereo, and is extremely open and user friendly. The name ROMSDAL has always been synonymous with North Sea trawlers, yachts built for research, and strong North Sea fishing boats. Originally built in 1962 as a research vessel, DISCOVERY underwent a complete rebuild and refit from 1998-2000 and has become one incredible liveaboard yacht. The refit was massive and reported costs exceeded 12 million dollars. DISCOVERY is an aesthetically pleasing yacht that shows outstanding workmanship and stunning craftsmanship throughout. The interior wood is exquisite and the layout is perfect for luxurious accommodations.

Refit to be a gentleman’s expedition yacht the hull was flared and painted with Sterling Flag Blue paint. During the refit a new rolled aluminum superstructure was built and installed using bimetal transition inserts. The superstructure is white. Teak trim was added producing the true yacht finish one would expect. The decks were covered with teak and show little wear. The interior design and layout was designed by an architect while the interior workmanship was overseen by an interior designer. The results are simply stunning. With the finest craftsmanship available, the interior has varnished mahogany wood work and trim, madronal burl woodwork and trim, granite, marble, jade, and exquisite fabrics. "Discovery" is an excellent option for the owner that wants a liveaboard yacht with the versatility and capability to cruise long distances.

Hi Ulysses, You probably know why Delfin and Torsk are unique as I believe there are only two 55' steel Romsdal vessels to that design that are sailing the seas. The same as your vessel is unique as it is 53' and I don't believe there is any other steel Romsdal vessel that length sailing the seas. Cheers Mate.

Sorry for any misunderstanding that was not intended, I believe these vessels are unique in their own way and from my perspective they look beautiful with great lines above and below the water line as well as being steel round bilge they are strong and a sea kindly vessel, a little roll maybe but very Gutsy, "Take Anywhere" with confidence a real "little ship" The other side also is that they are not a production line vessel, one does not see this kind of vessel every day, something different and Proven, I haven't seen any built here in Australia. I hope that explains a little with my thoughts. Thanks for your kind words and I hope you are enjoying cruising with your unique ship as much as I will be. Cheers.

I certainly agree with all you said. I have always appreciated a nice rounded stern in both my boat and other endeavors. I think your use of "proven" sums it up. Once again, the best of luck and enjoyment with her.

Torsk Glad to see she has a new home! I had the privilege of spending many hours in the crow's nest as a kid. Awesome place to spend time during the summers! I remember when they cut a hole in the side and installed the Gardner Diesel! She is a beauty, congratulations

Torsk For those that didn't know, that was the 2nd Torsk owned by the Willie family. The first was wood as I recall(many moons ago so memory could be fading) and was purchased by the editor of Norwesting magazine which is long gone. Both were beautiful ships

Torsk Thanks for your comments Simi 60. Yes, Ben did the full blast and paint job at "The Yard", steel hull, alloy superstructure, very happy with his work and his Team, GT Mac ROCK !!!!! When we were kids we went on the "Mirimar" many times, Hales Cruises, Bribie Island and Brisbane River cruise, Bishop Island fun Xmas cruises, (now Port of Brisbane.) She was a fun vessel sad to see her there. When I was at the Yard I would look over wonder how the timbers are standing up after all those years?

Fletcher500

Beautiful boat. What type of coating is on your Prop?

I have used a new product here in Australia called "Aqua Prop", I believe it is used in Europe. it is very similar to "Prop Speed" but not the cost. I had the chance to meet the Australian distributor last year when my yacht was up on the hard for a bottom job and he wanted me to try it, so I did, and a year later it is going well so I am using it again on "Torsk" we will see how it goes in the next year or two. Cheers

I’m wondering why the bow is so huge. My thinking is that there’s so much weight plunging into a wave with fwd motion that the bow needs to be high and full to rise to the occasion. Pun intended. The extreme flare seems a final designers trick to keep the bow from mak’in much like a submarine. So the bow flare and the percentage of the hull it involves is unique. But the most unique feature of their design looks to be just the very high displacement or weight. There’s no hollow wineglass section like on my Willard. There’s no typical keel that plays a big part in directional stability. However they do have a V bottom of sorts. The Romsdal seems to rely mostly on their cross sectional area to control or limit sideways movement of the craft. I don’t see any stabilizers. Do these boats do without?

URSA MAJOR Yacht for Sale

URSA Major is unquestionably the finest Krogen 54' on the water. Her knowledgeable owners have inspected every component, every nook and cranny, and touched every item on board. Their attention to detail and proper boat maintenance is obvious under the closest of inspections. URSA Major is the epitome of a world-class go anywhere trawler. She represents that rare opportunity to begin cruising immediately, all the heavy lifting has already been done for you. URSA Major's hull was Awlgripped in 2017, and the rest of the exterior was painted in 2018 (all fittings and hardware were removed prior to painting), and new Diamond Sea Glaze windows and pilothouse doors installed.

James Krogen's inspiration for the Krogen 54' came from the Romsdal trawlers, designed and built for operation in the high latitudes. Over-built and equipped for extended periods away from the dock, the Krogen 54' is truly "At Home On Any Sea".

"No port too far. No sea too surly". If this describes you cruising aspirations you owe it to yourself to put URSA Major on your short list. You will not be disappointed.

From 1999 to 2004 DISCOVERY was lavished during her conversion in Seattle. $12m was reportedly overspent on her.

The interior was beautifully executed with a very nautical feel to it. The Master Stateroom is as big as any 140er I have been on. The Main Salon is cozy with a wood burning fire place. The engine room is clean and the single Enterprise main engine, although relatively unknown, appeared to be reliable along with the rest of the machinery and equipment.

The Pilot House I could spend time cruising in with friends. The over all layout was a bit fragmented but beautifully executed.

The outside spaces are comfortable and teak is every where there is deck. The Douglas fir hand rails have handsome graining. This is a mans boat. The steel hull appears to be in good condition along with the tanks tops that were replaced during the refit. The machinery is dry stack (including the fire place). DISCOVERY is a vessel meant to be at sea. I have current photography to show her condition and would be happy to share them and my further observations.

I am very intrigued by this company. I was wondering if anybody knows anything about them personally and not what is just on their website. I love their Expedition 75' with extended sky lounge and Portuguese Bridge. I would definitely go trans-atlantic with that. http://www.realships.com

Looks like they have taken their design ques from Nordhavn. http://www.yachtforums.com/forums/nordhavn-yacht/3810-nordhavn-55-trawler.html http://www.nordhavn.com/72/overview.php4 Maybe this should be in the "Design or Copy?" tread.

Zzzzzzzzzz.....HUH!? Sorry, gang, been on serious vacation and preparing for a Smokies expedition as well. Responding to Carl's well-aimed kick to the backside, here's the dope: outmywindow, the Nordhavn design and the Real Ships design are markedly different--- steel v. FRP, interior accommodations, hull shape, machinery arrangements...well, check out the listing for the 77 that I made up which explains more in detail-- https://www.boatwizard.com/core/lis...=Users&listing_id=25424&url=realships&lang=en The greatest similarity is that both the Nordy and the RS are LSD (Long Slow Distance) boats... and we think the world of Jim Leishman's designs. So, a "design copy"? Please. The look of Real Ships hasn't changed markedly for the 12 years since inception. CaptTom, Billy Joel's "Red Head" was/is a Florida Bay Coaster 65-footer. We were the sales agents for them until Achilles bought & moved the operation down to Guatemala and we found that folks did not warm up to building a boat in a Banana Republic. rymert19, thanks for the kind words. The 75 morphed into the 77 due to client requirements. Two are currently under construction at the yard in Bayou Labatre. They run in the neighborhood of $3.5M. Hope this wasn't too commercial a plug requiring editing, but that's it in a nutshell. Now, where's that Coleman lantern anyway?
I think real ships makes a pretty vessel

Who knows where this stuff comes from? That is a shot of "Kokomo", the second of the 68 series Expedition boats and was most likely taken about three years ago, just prior to delivery to her owners. That large center console on the foredeck was ditched for a much smaller RIB early on resulting in a marked reduction of mashed fingers/shearguards/hullsides during launching & retrieval.

Real Ships 68 "KOKOMO" The photograph of the Real Ships 68 above reminded me of my grand mother fleeing the beauty parlor to return home lickety split to put dinner on the table... Attached is a more deserving picture of the trawler. Bye the way; Patrick Bray of Vancouver, BC designed the hull... Jim

Yipes...this is a tough audience! Design or Copy? That's a cheap shot based, I'd guess, simply on having the house set well aft. Vast differences between the Real Ships and the Nordhavn, and not just in materials. Loren's absolutely right...these are two different critters. If you want to look for similarities, go all the way back to the '50s and take a look at the Romsdal trawlers out of Norway. I've been aboard a couple of Real Ships, and these are just that: real ships, not toy yachts. Really well thought out, built to high standards, seamanlike. Were built in Louisiana, but soon to be built at a commercial yard in Brazil to keep price in line without sacrificing strength and quality. If you haven't been aboard one, check one out at Lauderdale. It's a lesson in how to do it right.

Real Ships Kokomo 68 for sale I saw that the Real Ships 68 foot Kokomo is currently for sale in Freeport, Bahamas for an asking price of $1,999,000. Would love to have the money to buy it. It's my second favorite by these guys next to the 77 footer.

Unrequired Speculation... YachtForums said: Well Jim, while you find it intriguing because it's a sector in which you have specific interest (read: a listing), others have a more 'vested' interest in swaying popular opinion, such as a builder posing as an unaffiliated consumer to elevate the interest of his/her own product. "dmzuniga's" previous post's read like the promotional rhetoric most of us have come to loathe... and the primary reason that 20,000+ people have become members of YF... to gain knowledge from their peers, not from those who have something to sell. If I find a connection between a poster and a product, I'll not only ban the member, I'll remove any mention, *anywhere*, on YachtForums. I have done this with builders who could have very well become advertisers. It's not about money here. It's about community and maintaining the integrity of the resource our very knowledgeable members have built. Click to expand...

Description

With many different kinds of trawler yachts being built today, it's important to really understand the kind of long distance cruising that you plan to do. Cruising on your yacht for days, weeks, or even months on board can present a variety of challenges, but is one of the most rewarding and memorable experiences in boating. Owning a trawler with the ability to run long distances brings out your inner explorer, quenching your desire to discover places you've never seen while also feeding it. Whether you plan on cruising the Pacific Northwest, island hopping in the Caribbean, or taking on the Great Loop, before you make a selection on a trawler, it's best to discuss your plans with an experienced, knowledgeable broker that can walk you through the differences in some of the brands, styles, and capabilities.

SPEAK TO A SALES PROFESSIONAL

Finding yourself slowing things down in your world due to the crazy rush of information and speed all around us? Decided you’re ready for a boat, or have one but feel a shift in your style and aren’t ready to dig too deep into your pockets for one but would like a more economical choice to escape the frenzy in? Well, then fast your gaze upon what is known as a trawler - a perfect option for those seeking all of the above points just mentioned. Please meet the well-known boat type - a trawler - which is simply a price conscious motorboat with a full-displacement, ballasted hull that possesses just that perfect cruising range for those long-ocean passages you’ll be heading out on to decompress from the never ending present day chaos.

Below are some of the well-known trawler yacht brands in the industry :

  • American Tug
  • Fleming Cruising Yachts
  • Kadey-Krogen Yachts
  • Mainship Yachts
  • Marlow Yachts
  • Nordhavn Yachts
  • Outer Reef Yachts
  • Ranger Tug Boats

As Ferrari is to sexy race cars, trawlers are to functional ‘workboat-look’ recreational boats. Yes, ‘trawler’ is a classic, non-Euro ‘look’. This lends itself to a specific so called, ‘trawler lifestyle’ which translates to a sailor’s cruising lifestyle with the power of a motorboat. Those who appreciate their boat to have excellent sea keeping skills coupled with the range to take you to far - off hideaways, are in for a real treat when setting out on a trawler. Invite your family and friends as the trawler yachts offer long-term living accommodations - perfect for desiring an ‘at anchor’ remote boat getaway. These ‘small packages with a punch’ will carry, launch, and retrieve your tender too - thanks to her efficient crane.

Listing some of the trawlers other features, such as anchor accommodations, reverse windows, a pilot house, and walk around decks for line handling and docking, you’ll find this type of boat is well equipped for leisure and fun!

So get your calendar out and block off a stretch of time, as the trawler embraces trips like those!

Once a commercial fishing boat, the trawler has evolved to meet all boater requests of this present day resembling a comfortable home with the benefit of never having to jump in and out of your car as you’ll be motoring above sea level from one port to the next sipping on your favorite island cocktail and popping shrimp cocktails! You can choose from a more basic trawler or go all out with designing one that rivals a luxury yacht with all it’s out of this world comforts.

Don’t be surprised if that block of time turns into calling your realtor to put your house on the rental market as you’ve decided to set out aboard your sweet ride on the water for months on end or even decided to drop the home and move aboard! We don’t see why you couldn’t if your spirit has been calling you out to a sea salt life as there’ll be no compromise in comfort with the trawler’s private staterooms for nights dreaming above the ocean, full galleys to prepare scrumptious fresh-caught fish dinners, and roomy galleys to gather in and share island stories. Why should long-distance cruising be any less as it’s equally important getting to your dream destination. Slow and steady, you’ll be pleased to see the fuel bill is allowing you extra funds for elaborate dinners out or that new tender you’ve been eyeing.

If you’re more of a tropical breeze cruiser, then by all means, get her ready to cruise south for the winter to extend the warm months aboard. The journey up and back on the intracoastal waterway has been traveled by many with the same idea to keep that summer warmth going! You’ll appreciate how little fuel she’ll consume and that excellent range we continue to remind you of too. Built for voyages such as these, the builders have kept the size of the engine areas to a minimal and chose displacement hulls to aid in cutting through the seas instead of sucking up tons of power. Your search for a super trawler is doable as you’ll find many to be ocean-crossing water babies. If you want the speedier versions, there are a few builders who can accommodate you in making that dream come true on your trawler too. And don’t be fearful you’ll have to give up the low fuel bills, as even the fast trawlers typically offer superior fuel economy than many different powerboat styles.

What we find our clients greatly appreciate is the trawler’s expansive cabin space even on the smaller models and some can offer aft cabins in the rear and some manufacturers pulled all stops out and in their larger models have been known to add multiple deck levels to these ever evolving sweet ‘floating packages’.

We hope you’ve come to see that there are numerous reasons many of our clients love trawlers of all sizes because you don’t always need a yacht-sized vessel to make your dreams of venturing to remote ports in comfort and efficiency a reality without exhausting the retirement savings account.

The Romsdal may have been the first production trawler yacht when she was introduced in the late 1950s.
