Tatoosh: The secrets of Nobiskrug's 92m superyacht

When it comes to adventure, Tatoosh has done it all. Her captains and commissioning owner reveal her secrets to Sam Fortescue

If you don’t recognise Tatoosh from a distance, you probably don’t know yachting.” Captain Richard Hielckert doesn’t mince his words, although it’s a 20-year-old boat he’s talking about. From the 12-metre racing sailing boat she carries as a toy to her classically elegant silhouette and twin helicopters, 92 metre Tatoosh has always stood apart.

But to regard her as old would be a big mistake. Shell doors, a swimming pool, owner apartment, cinema, sauna – Tatoosh is bang up-to-date. “She is a timeless boat that has always been at the forefront,” he continues. “She stands out from the majority of boats that all look the same. There are lots of new boats, but they all look like wedding cakes, with maximum interior on minimum exterior. When those boats sit at anchor, you see them swinging and rolling while Tatoosh is still.”

After a recent massive refit, this iconic yacht is in better shape than she’s ever been in her life, featuring the latest audiovisual system Omniyon by YachtCloud. At the time of writing, she was also for sale, which explains why broker Burgess hooked me up with some of the key people aboard to find out more. It is a rare glimpse inside a boat that has been owned by two of the most successful figures in IT.

Tatoosh ’s story begins in the late 1990s, as her prospective owner’s fortunes rode high on the technology boom. Craig McCaw was in the vanguard of the mobile phone revolution in the US, and his companies sold for billions of dollars to some of the biggest names in telecoms – AT&T and Sprint.

His vision was for a yacht that would provide the ultimate home away from home for his family and a platform for a really ambitious cruising programme with lots of toys. “ Tatoosh should feel gracious like a home and also cosy,” says McCaw as he recounts the trials and tribulations of building her. “She should also feel more beachy than yachty. The philosophy was she should be built around tenders and helicopters.”

Renowned German designer Claus Kusch got the project off the ground. “He was the general contractor who chose how to build her,” recalls Gary Wright, build skipper and project manager for the yacht, and now head of Y.CO. “Claus really was the driving force behind the whole build.” This was in the years before he partnered with the Peters Werft yard and began building on his own account. He selected the booming German yard Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW) and work began at its smaller Rendsburg site, known as Nobiskrug.

At first Jon Bannenberg was involved, but he and Kusch did not see eye to eye. “This idea of creating curves and lines that are pretty was anathema to Kusch,” says McCaw. “We’d do everything three times until somehow it got right, but it was a continuous war with Jon.”

Helped by Bastiaan Sonneveld and Joost Beekman , Kusch drew the understated lines and exterior design of Tatoosh , as well as her naval architecture below the waterline. Kusch passed away in 2004, after the project was delivered, but he was adamant that the yacht should be built primarily around the requirements of those aboard. “The yacht’s architecture and form develop progressively and conceptually around the functional needs of the guests and crew,”  he said of his design.

What does that mean? Well, Terence Disdale was brought in after Bannenberg to develop a general arrangement that made the best use of the huge 3,229GT of internal volume. And the McCaw family was right at the centre of that plan. They had three young children and wanted their own private space. “After two weeks, the crew and the owner need a little space from each other, so I wanted a galley where I could make some dinner,” says McCaw. “We effectively sectioned it off. The kids could be below with  the parents and the next level could be the  sky lounge with the observation lounge.”

It was a two-storey apartment within the yacht. The owner’s cabin, two big en suites for the children and a galley lay downstairs, with a private lobby upstairs giving access to a huge observation lounge with its own pantry, a gym and the owner’s office. “Terry has a real gift for floor plans,” says McCaw. “While his role was not large, it was seminal.” On his watch, the space allocated to the pool grew, pushing the boat from her original 89 metres out to more than 92 metres. “We ended up stretching Tatoosh because the beach area and the pool got too short.”

The London-based designer is typically modest when it comes to describing his role in the project. “Walls, floors, ceilings, lighting, sockets,” he says, as if he were a glorified handyman. “I did a certain amount of detailing in the bathroom.” In reality, he set the tone for the look and feel of the interior, with its panelled white ceilings, expressive parquet floors and almost architectural use of dado rails and mitred wooden profiles.

“ Tatoosh is rich and refined – yet has an inviting, kick-your-shoes-off casualness that feels absolutely right on a yacht,” he adds. “Every single element of the structure and interior decoration must be considered: absolutely nothing was designed on a whim. The positioning of windows, for instance, is determined by what goes on within; the dining room windows are lined up with the centre of  the dining table.”

Many of the interior fittings were actually selected by American designer Thomas Achille , who had also worked on several of McCaw’s properties. Furnishing is an eclectic mix of vintage, curio and antique – in line with  McCaw’s fondness for buying at auction. You see  vivid, glossy rattan work and Chippendale armchairs; a real stone hearth (complete with poker and tongs) and elegant Georgian occasional tables; campaign-style chairs and lattice-fronted wardrobes.

“At the beginning, we started looking at catalogues to buy antique pieces,” Achille says. “But most of the furniture you see is reproduction. Craig is not one to gravitate towards super luxury glitzy stuff – he’s a very unassuming gentleman. But he is American and loves America. We decided we were going to give him an American home on the ship, and that’s what we did.”

Colours are mostly conservative, neutral – drawn from the natural materials used. Achille really liked to play with texture, though, so there were grass cloth hangings and chenille fabric, leathers and grained wood. There is also a lot of art, curated by McCaw.

On the walls, there are huge flags behind glass – keepsakes from previous adventures – Japanese prints and a host of eye-watering art. “The owners made several visits to auctions and art houses – they were big collectors,” says Wright. “We were all very lucky to find ourselves surrounded by very good reproductions of original pieces of art they had in their homes.  I had a wonderful van Gogh in my captain’s cabin. Luckily I knew it wasn’t real!”

There are other features that mark Tatoosh out, such as her dedicated wine storage and the five-metre by four-metre heated pool with contra-jets and rising floor on the main deck. Nobody had ever thought of putting a big swimming pool on the aft deck before, but Tatoosh built on Kusch’s earlier work, such as on Leander G .

Toys were another major focus for the design team. A whole deck has been christened “the boat deck” and with good reason. Davits that are elegantly worked into the exterior lines of the boat hold a Germán Frers-designed daysailer called Julia and Chase , a gorgeous custom Hinckley Talaria tender. The Frers racer is 13 metres of composite wizardry with a lifting bulb keel, aimed at getting out for a satisfying burn around the anchorage. Speed is also the essence of the Hinckley, which can manage over 30 knots with its twin 420hp diesels powering Hamilton jet drives. More importantly, it makes a handy overnighter for the owner.

“We used Chase for picnics and the like,” remembers McCaw. “It’s very healthy for both the owner and the guests to be able to have space, even if you are in relatively remote areas. Julia  is pretty complex and she’s quick. There’s something beautiful about getting away from all the machinery in sailing – the sweetness of how you can get in and join the coast.”

McCaw was also a keen pilot. The main helipad is high up aft on the bridge deck, and it includes a bunkering station drawing on tanks of 7,000 litres – enough to keep the aircraft flying for days. It features a so-called harpoon grid to make it easier to touch down in heavy weather. And there’s another touch-and-go helipad on the deck above, slightly forward.

“The double helideck was really about having friends to come and visit so you could move yours out of the way,” says McCaw. “It was much more of the Wild West back then with helicopters – you could use them much more widely. The helideck could also be used for tenders.”

It was all part of a philosophy of yachting that meant everything aboard got used. “The order of  the day was to have at least two helicopters  aboard,” remembers Wright. “A Twin Otter would follow us around, so I’d normally be setting out a mooring for the seaplane.”

A well-equipped dive centre rounds out the yacht’s capabilities. There’s an industrial model Bauer compressor and a fill station that can refill four tanks simultaneously; there’s even a nitrox refilling station for deeper dives. It’s all located around the beach club, where a shell door on the starboard quarter creates a dedicated dive lobby. There’s also a hot tub, sauna and an expansive  bar down here.

With great plans to circumnavigate at leisure, Tatoosh was fitted with some unusual security features. McCaw mentions bulletproof glass and Kevlar armour padding behind walls throughout the superstructure. “We didn’t embed rockets in the hull because we were afraid one might go  off, but we had full British armoury in case the worst should happen in the Straits of Malacca,” McCaw says with a wry smile.

There was also an eight-strong contingent of Gurkhas among the crew – a real novelty at the time in the mainly Anglo-Saxon world of yachting. “Every one of them was fabulous,” says McCaw. They could also strip down an M50 automatic weapon in seconds and put together a mean curry for the weekly Nepalese food night.

Tatoosh was finally delivered in summer 2000 as the world’s 12th-largest private yacht. She wasted no time getting on with the job of cruising. First it was Finland, Sweden, Denmark, then back out of the Baltic and down to the Mediterranean. In the autumn, she cruised out to the West Indies and on to Panama.

McCaw has a particularly fond memory of reaching St Petersburg. Foreign-flagged vessels weren’t allowed onto the city’s waterways, but they bribed a local official to allow the 11-metre tender through. “We managed to talk our way into taking the boat into the canals at  60 to 70 knots with a giant Russian flag up. Blasting through the canals – I will never forget it. It is the closest to James Bond I will ever be.”

But in the dying days of 2001, the tech bubble burst and the McCaws made the heart-wrenching decision to give up the yacht they had invested so much energy in building. They reached a deal with fellow technology billionaire Paul Allen of Microsoft, which saw the boat pass into his ownership, but gave them time aboard for four more years. “Paul saw no need to change anything – just one room,” says McCaw.  “The crew loved having someone on board who knew more about the boat than they did. There was no diminished magic for us.”

Just one of Paul Allen’s yachts, Tatoosh has nevertheless been exceptionally well looked after, with regular refits culminating last winter in her detailed 20-year survey at Kusch Yachts on the River Elbe in Germany. All her engineering has been overhauled and serviced, and the boat has been repainted above and below the waterline.

In her life to date, the boat has toured Africa, the Middle East, the Indian Ocean, the Far East and South East Asia. “Looking at the cruise folder, she’s been all over the world,” says Captain Hielckert. “We were preparing a trip up the Amazon, but unfortunately that never happened. We did visit Fernando de Noronha, a really special island off the Brazilian coast – not many people have been there.”

With robust German construction, Tatoosh is the match of anything the oceans can throw at her. She’s ridden quietly at anchor through 70-knot gusts and traversed big seas. “The hull is not ice-classed, but she can go more or less everywhere,” Hielckert says proudly. And, he adds, "she’s ready to go!”

When the words “famous explorer yacht” are strung together, Tatoosh is one name that comes to mind among yacht-watchers. The 303-foot expedition vessel, built by Nobiskrug in 2000, gained recognition thanks to its high-profile owners—American telecom executive Craig McCaw and Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen. Behind the big names, this gigayacht is more noteworthy for its capacity for adventure.

“ Tatoosh is more than a pretty yacht; she’s designed to venture around the world,” Capt. Laurent Delleur, who has been with the yacht since 2007, told Robb Report .

A roster of international designers had a hand in Tatoosh ’s design evolution, including German designer Claus Kusch for the distinctive exterior and British designer Terence Disdale on the original interior.

Following Allen’s death in 2018, the current owner bought Tatoosh in 2022 and embarked on a significant refit, which included an interior refresh, full upgrade of the AV/IT systems, and changes to the outdoor spaces. He also put it into Fraser Yachts charter fleet.

Beyond the tech,  Tatoosh is one of the quietest yachts afloat thanks to twin DEUTZ-MWM 2,500 hp diesel engines with Visco Masse rubber mounts. The yacht has an impressive 7,000-nautical mile range when cruising at speeds of 12.5 knots. Its top speed is 16 knots.

The Boat Deck With Its Custom Tenders

As one of the original explorer yachts, toys feature big aboard Tatoosh . The dedicated “boat deck” has Davits worked into the exterior lines to hold a Germán Frers–designed 42-foot daysailer called Julia  and a 42-foot classic Hinckley Talaria tender called Chase . “The main tenders don’t sit in garages like modern yachts, but on deck, as part of Tatoosh ’s signature,” says Delleur. “The sailing boat was custom made from carbon fiber and was unique with her canting keel. The yacht used to also accommodate two Hobie catamarans on the boat deck.”

The Pool Transitions to a Dance Floor

It takes nearly 10,600 gallons of water to fill the 200-square-foot heated swimming pool on the main deck aft. A variable current allows guests to swim long distances. Come evening, the pool floor raises flush to the deck, transforming into a dance floor.

The Extended Beach Club

Tatoosh boasts a whopping 3,229 gross tonnes of internal volume. Exterior designer Disdale pushed the yacht’s dimensions from the 292-foot length that was originally planned to its final 303 feet, mostly to make more room for the on-deck pool and beach club. It proved to be a good idea, paving the way for a dedicated dive lobby, a hot tub, a sauna, and a bar with sea views.

World Traveler

Tatoosh has a track record of global cruising, sometimes sailing up to 35,000 nautical miles a year. The ambitious cruising program has taken it into far-off lands, including Fernando de Noronha in Brazil, Namibia, and Zanzibar. The most remote location to date is a group of far-flung islands in the Indian Ocean, which Tatoosh visited during the 2000s. The yacht spent several weeks in the region, taking in Europa, Les Glorieuses, and the Aldabra Atoll, which rarely feature on even the most adventurous itinerary, as well as Madagascar, Tanzania, and Mozambique.

The Piano Lounge

Tatoosh’s interior can be closed off to create a twin-level private owner’s apartment that occupies the forward section of the yacht across two decks: The self-contained area includes the primary bedroom, owner’s office, gym, observation lounge with private galley, massage room, piano lounge (pictured) and two guest cabins. From the observation lounge, for example, views of Mt. Etna and Mt. Stromboli erupting by night have been enjoyed in privacy.

Two Helipads, Two Choppers For Exploration

The yacht’s two heli-decks are a signature feature of Tatoosh ’s distinctive exterior, with the capacity to land a twin-turbine Airbus A145. They’ve largely been used for remote exploration in places like Africa. One of the helipads has a dedicated helicopter spares store, a helicopter refueling station, and an approved fire station—allowing the yacht to be used like a small heliport. The dual helicopter operations mean multiple groups of guests can be welcomed by air and flown ashore. Another use when the choppers are away: Candlelit dinners on the main helipad.

What’s in a Name

Tatoosh is named after the island near Paul Allen’s hometown of Seattle, but the 11 guest cabins are christened after some of the Pacific islands the yacht has frequently visited, including Lahaina in Hawaii and Maupiti and Bora Bora in French Polynesia.

Two Cinemas and Recording Studio

Tatoosh’ s previous owners kitted the yacht out with impressive onboard technology, including a state-of-the-art recording studio and two cinemas—one indoor, one outdoor. Even so, that technology was no match for Allen’s impressive onboard art collection. Under his stewardship, Tatoosh displayed original pieces, including a Van Gogh. Allen’s complete art anthology fetched $1.5 billion at auction in 2022.

Inside Paul Allen’s Former Yacht on Sale for $90 Million

The estate of the late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen is offering the sale of his 303-foot-long superyacht , Tatoosh , for a cool $90 million, according to Dirt . If you’re thinking those stats aren’t impressive enough for the billionaire and tech magnate , well, you’d be right. Tatoosh , which is currently the 60th largest yacht worldwide, was just Allen’s secondary vessel. His main yacht, Octopus , sold last year for $325 million and stretches 414 feet long, making it the 20th largest yacht in the world.

As for Tatoosh , the recently-listed vessel was custom-built by German shipyard Nobiskrug in 2000 for fellow American tech mogul Craig McCaw before being bought by Allen the following year for an estimated $100 million. The craft was put up for sale shortly after Allen’s death in 2018, but was taken off the market for an extensive refitting that was completed last year.

Inside the vessel, 11 staterooms can accommodate up to 19 guests with access to a lengthy list of lavish amenities that includes a heated swimming pool with a hydraulic-powered mosaic floor that can raise and lower, a parquet floor salon complete with a limestone fireplace and a bar, a movie theater adorned in red velvet, a beauty salon, a gym, two helicopter pads, a sunbathing and diving area decked out with a blue-tiled spa, bulletproof windows, a fleet of jet skis, multiple 43-foot tenders, and a crew of 31 to oversee it all. The owner’s quarters include a private deck, two dressing rooms, and an observation lounge with a private galley, all spanning across two of the ship’s five decks, which are all accessible via elevator.

To maintain and staff the superyacht, which will be one of the largest yachts on display during the Monaco Yacht Show later this month, potential new owners will have to be prepared to pay $9 to $10 million per year in addition to the hefty price tag. Tatoosh is being represented by the Monaco-based yachting company Fraser.

Before his death from cancer in 2018, Allen amassed an estimated fortune of $20.3 billion, according to Forbes Billionaires Index. The yacht is the latest part of his estate, which included multiple properties and two sports teams, to be sold-off.

The yacht, named 'Tatoosh' is on sale for 90 million euros (around $91.3 million), following an extensive 11-month refit, according to Fraser Yachts, which is handling the sale.

According to the listing by Fraser Yachts, the "instantly recognizable" Tatoosh can sleep 19 passengers, and has space for 31 crew. It was custom-built by Nobiskrug for the American cellphone mogul Craig McCaw, who sold the boat to Allen in 2001.

The yacht has 10 individual staterooms, but McCaw also wanted to ensure that his family had their own private space while aboard, so decided to section off a separate owner's cabin, he told Boat International.

The apartment has two ensuite bedrooms, a lounge, its own pantry, a galley, and gym among other things, per Boat International.

"After two weeks, the crew and the owner need a little space from each other, so I wanted a galley where I could make some dinner," McCaw said.

However, the boat still has plenty of areas for socializing with guests, including a heated swimming pool on the main deck, as well as its own 'beach club' area, per the listing.

Guests can also enjoy a private cinema room, and an elevator with access to all five decks of the ship, per the listing.

The gym features weights, a treadmill, and other equipment.

There's also room for two helipads, as well as two tender boats called 'Chase' and 'Julia,' which can carry people to and from the yacht, according to Boat International.

The superyacht will be on display at the Monaco Yacht show between September 28 and October 30, per Fraser Yachts.

It's not the only yacht that belonged to Allen, who was a keen ocean explorer. Another boat, the 414-foot "Octopus," was sold to a mystery buyer in 2021, having been listed for $278 million.

TATOOSH has a total of 92 meters (303 ft) with a beam of 14.95 meters, a draft measuring 5.16 meters, and a volume of 3,229 GT.

She has two Deutz engines that can power her at 19 knots top speed, an 18-knot cruising speed, and more than six thousand nautical miles range before needing to refuel again.

The TATOOSH yacht features an exterior design by Kusch Yachts and has a steel hull and aluminum superstructure.

With an overall length of 303 feet, it is listed as the 88th largest yacht in the world and equipped with stabilizers for a smoother cruise and two helicopter pads – one for the ship’s own helicopter and another for guests’ aircraft.

Being a superyacht, she carries a helicopter, a sailboat, several other boats, large tenders, and toys.

The TATOOSH yacht was built for the mobile phone magnate Craig McCaw but was purchased it in 2001 for a reported US $110 million.

However, the ship’s crew claim that the boat’s mooring position was “explicitly directed” by the local port authority and they were only following the instructions.

Vessels like Mike Lynch's stricken superyacht are "unsinkable", according to the chief executive of the firm which makes and sells them.

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, told Sky News there are no flaws with the design and construction of the Bayesian superyacht which capsized in a storm off the coast of Porticello, Sicily, on Monday.

Five bodies were found by divers on Wednesday - taking the number of confirmed dead to six.

The Italian Sea Group also owns the firm that built British tech tycoon Mr Lynch's Bayesian, and Mr Costantino said the vessels "are the safest in the most absolute sense".

"Being the manufacturer of Perini [boats], I know very well how the boats have always been designed and built," he said.

"And as Perini is a sailing ship... sailing ships are renowned to be the safest ever."

He said their structure and keel made them "unsinkable bodies".

Mr Costantino said news of the sinking "put me in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other".

"This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact," he said.

It is understood Italian prosecutors investigating the incident are continuing to hold interviews with the survivors.

On Tuesday they questioned the captain for more than two hours to help reconstruct what happened and provide useful technical details.

Four British inspectors are also in Porticello and have begun a preliminary assessment of events.

It is understood they will look at all relevant aspects of the incident, including the design, stability, and operation of the vessel. They will also examine the effects of the weather conditions experienced.

Twenty-two people were on board the vessel, 15 of whom were rescued - including Briton Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter Sofia.

Divers will resume efforts on Thursday morning to bring ashore a body they found earlier. One more person remains missing.

On Luxurious Ibiza, Essential Workers Are Forced to Live in Tent Cities

The Spanish island fills beachfront hotels and glittering dance clubs with wealthy tourists. But its teachers, firefighters and police officers can’t find a place to live.

At 1,900 euros a month, the rent was not cheap. But Alicia Bocuñano still felt fortunate to find an apartment on Ibiza at that price. As a taxi driver pulling 16-hour days, Ms. Bocuñano, a single mother who grew up on this Spanish island, figured that a surplus from the busy summer months might be enough to make the rent.

But her would-be landlord wanted six months of rent plus a security deposit up front — close to €14,000, or about $15,300, in one shot. Though not quite legal in Spain’s tightly regulated rental sector, such demands are common on Ibiza, where wealthy tourists fill beachfront hotels and glittering dance clubs while the people who work in those places — not to mention the island’s teachers, firefighters and other essential workers — can’t find a place to live.

In lieu of a new apartment, Ms. Bocuñano, 38, spent a frightening two weeks sleeping in her car, then three months in a tent with her 10-year-old son, Raúl, by her side, before buying a used caravan in June. For a couple of months, she stationed the Caravelair-brand trailer in Can Rova, an ad hoc village of tents, shacks and campers on the outskirts of Ibiza Town, the island’s capital, just behind a dealership selling expensive powerboats. “When we first came here it was cold,” she said. “Like, very cold.”

Tent cities began popping up here in 2023, but they have mushroomed in size and number this year. Can Rova, the largest of three major camps in and around the capital, was home to some 280 people this summer. On a recent July night, six people and a dog were bedding down on the floor in Ms. Bocuñano’s caravan.

Many Can Rova residents said that, with nowhere else to go, they hoped to stay indefinitely. But on July 31, the police made good on a court order to clear the camp, which had been erected on private land. (The owner is currently embroiled in an array of zoning and legal disputes.) Many said they planned to relocate to one of the other camps, even as those sites lacked the electricity, water and perimeter fence that made Can Rova accommodating.

Ms. Bocuñano was detained by the police during the mass eviction, and may face a fine.

In much of the world, homelessness correlates with a lack of work. But not on Ibiza, where the jobs are plentiful and the booming tourism sector depends on itinerant workers (with varying immigration status). Though seasonal labor has long strained the housing supply for a few months each year, the shortage now looks more structural.

“People who work every day to care for their children have no place to live,” Ms. Bocuñano said.

The rise of remote work and a surge in short-term rentals have erased many apartments from the market, compounding existing shortages caused by land-use restrictions on an island prized for its natural beauty, and by poor public policy that followed the burst of Spain’s housing bubble in 2008.

“It is fundamental,” said Carme Trilla, an economist and former director of housing policy for Catalonia, the Spanish region on “the peninsula,” as islanders are wont to say. “By definition they have to live there, and it’s not only price but also availability that is a problem.”

Ibiza’s deepening housing crisis came slowly at first, and then all at once. The island’s brand — “sun, beaches, nightlife,” as one broker put it — blossomed in the 1960s and ’70s as bohemians congregated on this Balearic Island. The flower children gave way to disco, and bell bottoms were pushed off the dance floor in the 1980s and 1990s by rave culture. By the 2000s, Ibiza had secured its reputation as a mecca for electronic music and luxury escapism.

“It is the only place in the world where you can see the top DJs in the world in top venues every night,” said Yann Pissenem, C.E.O. and owner of the Night League, parent company to Ushuaia and Hi, two of the island’s hottest clubs.

The island’s year-round population of 160,000 is double what it was 20 years ago and growing. During peak summer months, more than a million people make merry on the island at any given time, with upscale tourism putting still more pressure on housing.

Ibiza is an extreme example of a larger phenomenon in Spain, where about 12 percent of the gross domestic product comes from tourism. A recent report found that in 306 cities and towns considered tourism draws, rents are an average of 75 percent higher than the national average — the largest gap ever. Already this summer, thousands of protesters have turned up in other vacation spots including Malaga, Mallorca and the Canary Islands to demonstrate against the excesses of tourism.

Ms. Trilla, who now runs Habitat 3, a foundation that works to facilitate subsidized housing, said that on Ibiza, the crisis has been intensified by a new spate of discount airline connections to European capitals, and by more online platforms renting apartments to foreign visitors. The median price for a home on the island is now €558 a square foot — three times the national average and more than double the average in Madrid and Barcelona.

Three-quarters of prospective buyers on Ibiza are looking for a second home, while another 15 percent want an investment property, said Paloma Pérez Bravo, C.E.O. of Sotheby’s International Realty in Spain. So on an island with inadequate housing and limited buildable land, many homes sit vacant for much of the year. And since the pandemic, she added, there’s been more demand from buyers who want to live on the island year-round. “Ibiza is a good investment because the prices never stop rising,” Ms. Pérez said.

On a recent afternoon just before the demolition at Can Rova, residents related stories of crammed studio apartments where people would sleep in shifts on so-called “hot beds” for about €300 a month.

Maria Fernanda Chica, a 34-year-old Colombian who is awaiting working papers, lived in one such apartment while cleaning luxury homes for cash. “I couldn’t cook food when I needed to,” she said of the conditions. “At best I could use the kitchen once per day.”

This summer, she was living in a makeshift structure in Can Rova with her partner and teenage son. Most of the residents there rented plots for between €350 and €450 a month, plus €50 euros for water and another €50 for electricity. The residents were responsible for digging their own septic systems. A good number had built shanties from plywood, shipping pallets, AstroTurf, tarpaulins and other basic materials.

Jonathan Sanchez, 33, and his girlfriend Sandra Velasquez, 41, sleep in a tent among a few dozen others in another informal settlement. Mr. Sanchez, who was born on Ibiza, works construction by day. Ms. Velasquez, a Colombian émigré lacking work documents, works nights cleaning for €7 an hour.

“I don’t even remember the last time I went to the beach,” said Mr. Sanchez on a recent night. His T-shirt said “Ants” — the name of the party that Mr. Pissenem hosts on Saturdays.

The couple charge their mobile phones at bus stops and draw water from a tap in a nearby cemetery. Most of their neighbors are seasonal workers from Morocco who decamp after the summer season. Mr. Sanchez has been in his tent for 14 months. His co-workers have no idea where he lives. “It’s not that I am embarrassed,” he said. “I just don’t want people to feel sorry for me.”

Whenever campers like Mr. Sanchez are forced to move on, the Guardia Civil, one of Spain’s two national police forces, will likely play a role (as they did in the Can Rova eviction). But many of the officers are themselves caught in this housing crisis. At the height of tourist season, there were 17 vacant Guardia Civil positions on Ibiza. Many new recruits avoid work on the island and rotate out when they can find an opening elsewhere in Spain, said Tomas Quesada, a Guardia Civil officer and union representative. Starting salaries are just €1,800 a month, and the monthly €94.63 cost-of-living bonus makes little difference.

“It is leading to the desertification of public services,” Mr. Quesada said. “We have the right to be able to live.”

Nurses and doctors face a similar reality. So do teachers, some of whom commute daily by airplane from other islands to save money. “We don’t have the same level of public services here in Ibiza,” said Joana Tur Planells, a union representative for teachers.

Land will always be limited on a 220-square-mile island, but there is an emerging consensus that government intervention is needed. In the town of Santa Eulària des Riu, where Can Rova was located, City Hall plans to allocate 54,000 square feet of public land for housing construction over the next few years. Policy documents call for increased emphasis on the construction of multifamily dwellings and a crackdown on illegal short-term rentals.

Carmen Ferrer Torres, Santa Eulalia des Riu’s conservative mayor, points to plans to break ground on the construction of 60 smaller rental apartments — a fraction of the units needed to ease the strain.

“These are important, urgent problems with solutions that will take longer than we have,” the mayor said. In the meantime, her party also advocates further liberalizing rental markets, betting that streamlined evictions for scofflaws could free up stagnant housing stock. Ms. Ferrer was on site supporting the July 31 clearance of Can Rova.

But for Ms. Trilla, the housing economist, the big picture solution is clear. “It’s necessary to prioritize public housing for essential workers,” she said, adding that the problem is not just housing but the price of land. Basically, public money is needed to buy private property at market prices.

She pointed to a series of policies in Barcelona, the Catalonian capital, that might ease short-term housing supply, including one that would temporarily loosen zoning rules so officials could break up single-family homes into multiple apartments. Barcelona is also phasing out short-term rentals of the type offered by platforms like Airbnb. They will be virtually banned by 2028.

On the private side, successful business owners like Mr. Pissenem, the club impresario, are wrestling with the crisis. His company has begun helping its seasonal workers find accommodations. “We all need to figure out a way to help the people that hold the island in their hands,” he said.

For now, Ibizans like Ms. Bocuñano wonder where their next home may be. For the first couple of nights after the Can Rova raid, she stayed on a friend’s couch. Her son is staying with her mother on the other side of the island. She was briefly allowed back in to Can Rova to get her personal possessions, including her caravan, but needed to borrow a vehicle to tow it.

From there, she said, “I am going to recover and put the pieces back together.”
