Regate Yacht Club Costa Smeralda

Yacht Club Costa Smeralda

A season full of great returns and novelties: the entire regatta calendar for summer 2024.

The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda’s intense sporting season for 2024 with regattas scheduled from May to October has been unveiled , along with the announcement of an important event, the 40th anniversary of the partnership between one of the most prestigious yacht clubs in the world and its historical partner Rolex. Save these dates in your calendar until July.

yacht costa smeralda oggi

The season opens in Porto Cervo with the traditional Vela & Golf (24-26 May) . It will then be the moment of the Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta on 4-8 June , which sees, for the third year running, an Italian excellence in the world of fashion join the YCCS as Title Sponsor of the event. Following the success of past editions, the Southern Wind RendezVous and Trophy will take place as part of the Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta , an opportunity for a sailing trip to Porto Cervo enhanced by a family-like atmosphere and sportsmanship offered to Southern Wind yachts. An intense June continues with three regattas starting with the eagerly awaited J/24 European Championship on 10-16 June , dedicated to the J/24 Class, one of the most popular keelboats, which has significantly contributed to spreading sailing as a sport.

The final event dedicated to the J/24 monotype was held in Porto Cervo in 1996. Another eagerly awaited return is the Grand Soleil Cup , sailed in partnership with Cantiere del Pardo. A fleet of some forty boats is expected for the event. The month closes with the Invitational Smeralda 888 on 28-30 June , followed by the Smeralda 888 European Cup on 12-14 July , on board Smeralda 888 yachts designed by renowned yacht designer German Frers especially for the YCCS. The fourth edition of the YCCS J/70 Sailing Clinic takes place on 19-21 July.

Cruising aboard Costa Smeralda

There are many occasions that make a cruise special. One of the most beautiful is usually the first, but there is another feeling that I also really like: coming back. This is about my third and best experience aboard Costa Smeralda.

yacht costa smeralda oggi

The first time I was aboard this ship was in February 2020, followed by my second trip in May 2021. In the first case, it was a newly launched ship, and in the second, one of the first post-pandemic cruises. My experience was already good then, but on my third visit, it continued to exceed expectations.

The ship: Italy at sea

There is no doubt that Smeralda is one of the most beautiful ships I have ever seen . It is one of the largest classes currently available, and I would define its concept as Italian excellence brought to a cruise. By this I mean that in every corner you will see spaces inspired by Italian places (Colosseo, Piazza di Spagna or Piazza Trastevere, among others); Italian gastronomy (pasta, pizza, ice cream); and Italian brands (Campari, Aperol, Nutella, etc.).

One thing to keep in mind: it is a very different ship from others, and this is noticeable in many aspects. This ship does not have a classic atrium, theater, main restaurant, or disco. Instead, it has open spaces that transform during the day and night, many restaurants (both included and paid), and especially an infinity of outdoor areas that are wonderful to enjoy the navigation or sunsets.

Let's review my favorites, where I have spent more time:

Colosseo: the heart of the ship

Located in the center of decks 6, 7, and 8, it is possibly the place you will pass through the most times. The Colosseo is the nerve center of Costa Smeralda, and consists of a large piazza surrounded by bars and restaurants (Caffè Vergnano 1982, Campari Bar, Spazio Bollicine Ferrari, Sushino). At night, it transforms into the main stage, with musical and especially acrobatic shows. It is quite impressive since both the floor and the ceiling can rise and fall and completely transform the space. The views are almost 360, as in the authentic Roman Colosseum.

TIP: It is true that in some places there is little visibility for certain shows, so I recommend that you go early if you want a good spot. Also, the best shows are repeated, so you might have an extra opportunity to enjoy them.

Sanremo Show Lounge & La Spiaggia: nighttime disco

Located at the bow, Sanremo Show Lounge it replaces the classic theaters with a large space where some shows are carried out during the day, sometimes simultaneously with the Colosseo. At night, the stage descends, the seats are removed, and it turns into a large dance floor with a central bar. This is where many parties take place as the main disco on the ship .

Something similar happens at La Spiaggia , an indoor pool with two levels that hosts some parties at night such as white night or silent disco, transforming its dome with many sets of lights and colors.

Piazza di Spagna: the stage to the sea

Undoubtedly, of all the ship, I prefer the outdoor spaces . The great protagonist is the Piazza di Spagna, an open space located on decks 16, 17, and 18, aft. It is the ideal place to enjoy the sea. It also has swings and a glass bridge at the top with spectacular views. Along the upper decks, you will also find the outdoor pools and another of my favorites: the Passegiata Volare , a bridge at the top for the best views.

TIP: Even if you travel in winter or it's cold, don't miss the experience of watching the ship sail away or seeing a sunset from outside. It's worth bundling up and experiencing it at least once during your trip.

yacht costa smeralda oggi

Much more to discover

The ship has many more spaces, some of them gastronomic (which we will talk about in the next point), and others to relax or entertain you. Among them, some classics such as the casino, gym or spa (for a fee) and others more unique like an Italian design museum, the CoDe Museum or the beautiful Terrazza Superba at the aft, deck 7.

Gastronomy on board

Let's move on to one of my favorite points, and that is that if there is something I enjoy in Costa, it is its gastronomic proposal. As usual, you have included options such as the buffet or the à la carte restaurants, and many other paid proposals are added.

A la carte restaurants

As I mentioned earlier, on Smeralda, there is no large main restaurant. Instead, there are several smaller ones with very different decorations but the same menu. At night, they assign you one for the dinner shift you prefer . They are also open for breakfast and lunch. Generally, there is one with a standard menu, another with the same menu reserved for gold and platinum C|Club guests, and another with an extended schedule with a fixed tapas-style proposal.

The menu consists of several sections: starters, first courses, second courses, and desserts. In addition, a fixed selection of classic dishes that are always available and the children's menu are added. Of course, you can choose whatever you want , and skip or repeat any of the courses.

The food is clearly Italian, with many pasta options especially. In addition, there is a destination dish every night designed by one of the Michelin-starred chefs collaborating with Costa, inspired by the next port and included in the price .

yacht costa smeralda oggi

Buffets and families

Another favorite option on a cruise is the buffet. On Costa, it is a served buffet , that is, behind each tray, there is personnel who serves you a plated portion. I didn't set foot in the buffet more than for an afternoon snack a couple of days, where you find options like focaccia, as well as bread with Nutella or churros and fresh cut fruit.

Families with young children also have a reserved space on the upper decks, next to the children's club.

TIP: Take advantage of the fact that the buffet is located inside the promenade of deck 8 and go out to have a snack if the weather is good. You won't regret it.

Specialty restaurants

If there is something the Smeralda has, it is options to try different foods, from fast food to more refined experiences. Two of the most popular proposals are ice cream and pizza : yes, they are paid, although the prices are not high, and the quality is excellent. I never miss them. The price of ice cream is around €3 and pizzas around €10.

As fast food options, the ship has corners like the poke (€3-4), salads and wraps (€3-4), or the street food stand that opens all night (€2-5). I haven't tried them, but they look great if you want something different without spending much.

If you are looking for experiences beyond, the ship has the classic Teppanyaki (€35-45), Sushino , the sushi bar (€15-25), one of my favorites and highly recommended ; the Lab (€15-20), a gastronomic laboratory where you can learn sushi or cocktails; the steak restaurant (€25-45), and the jewel of the ship: Archipelago (€55). Without a doubt, it is my favorite, and I visit it every time it is aboard.

Something that Costa has done that did not exist before is offering restaurant packages . We chose to combine Archipelago + Sushino, and it cost us about €55 by booking in advance (the sushi was free, we could say).

TIP: Make sure you have registered in the C|Club, especially if you have booked through an agency instead of with Costa. You will have onboard discounts in places like the pizzeria, and even some free experiences that you can access as you level up.

yacht costa smeralda oggi

Briefly, I also want to tell you about cocktails and other drinks on board. One of the most frequently asked questions is whether it is worth having a drinks package or not . We will cover this topic in depth in the future, but you should be aware that Costa has raised the prices of the drinks menu compared to 2022. Coffees are around €3, large water bottles around €3.50, and cocktails around €10. It is a way for you to calculate it on your own.

Something I like is that the package also includes special drinks from certain bars that are more unique. For example, at Ferrari, they make some cocktails with white wine or sparkling wines that are only found there. They were among my favorite drinks along with cocktails like the Strawberry Daiquiri , as well as non-alcoholic ones like the Cosmopolitan Zero , the Pink Panther , or the Squok . Delicious.

In my case, we did the classic round of the Western Mediterranean, stopping to visit Palermo , Rome (from Civitavecchia), Savona , and Marseille . On this occasion, I did not take any excursions with Costa, and we decided to visit everything on our own. That is why I will not go into detail here about each destination; I will be dedicating separate publications with tips for each port in the future.

My experience

As I mentioned at the beginning, this was my third week on the Smeralda, and I would repeat it . Despite being a different ship that does not convince everyone, I really like the concept of open spaces, and it is undoubtedly the best ship along with Costa Toscana if you want to enjoy the outdoors .

As usual, from the booking process directly with Costa to the experience on board, everything was very favorable. This time I had no problems on board . The only thing that happened to me (again) is not being able to sail on the first day to Palma due to weather conditions. Just as last year, they compensated us with onboard credit, but this time it didn't happen. I understand that they are external causes, but the gesture was great to spend a better day aboard.

The service was excellent, especially in the restaurants. The food was perhaps the best part of the cruise , as well as the rhythm and professionalism of the team in the dining room (I remember years ago that dinners were eternal).

yacht costa smeralda oggi

Do I recommend it?

Without a doubt, I think Costa Smeralda (again, like its twin, Costa Toscana) is an ideal ship for a first cruise , especially in the Mediterranean. Traveling with Costa is easy, and the way Italians travel is very similar to the way Spanish travel . The food, parties, schedules, and atmosphere make it ideal for those who want to try the experience of traveling by sea. For those who have already traveled on classic Costa ships, I consider it essential to go with an open mind since, as I said, it is a ship with a quite different concept and has nothing to do with the previous fleet.

In the following weeks and months, I will be publishing much more content about Costa and this trip, so don't miss out.

Sailing in the Costa Smeralda, Sardinia

An Itinerary and What to Expect

At the northeast corner of the largely rectangular-shaped Island of Sardinia, lies a gorgeously emerald-colored watery archipelago called the Costa Smeralda. This island set and coastline make for an amazing sailing destination, and it is there where NauticEd held its 2023 flotilla comprising of 7 catamarans.

But the Costa Smeralda does not steal all the charm of Sardinia. Rather, the entire island, approximately 140 nautical miles long and 60 nautical miles across, is an incredible compact collection of tall mountain ranges, shear cliff faces dropping 1500 feet into the ocean water, some of the most delicious wines I’ve tasted, a motorcyclists dream for breathtaking winding mountain roads, the sandiest beaches in the Mediterranean – and not to miss mentioning clear warm enough emerald colored water everywhere. All this comes with a rich human history dating 5000 years ago and more.

This all makes Sardinia a dream location for a yacht charter + land tour; especially if you’ve got a bit more time on your hands than the traditional weeklong holiday. Indeed, we purposefully arrived 2 weeks prior to our Emerald Coast sailing trip and stayed an additional week and a bit.

If you’re reading here just for the facts ma’am about sailing in the Costa Smeralda, I’ll address that first. After that we’ll zoom back in time to our arrival and two-week land tour then traverse forward in time to our week-long land travel down the eastern coast after we dropped the boat.

Sailing in the Costa Smerelda, Sardinia

The archipelago of consists of 2 large islands, La Maddalena and Caprera with a dozen other islands scattered around. Part of the area including La Maddalena island is designated as a protected parkland called La Maddalena Park. The sailing area also includes the coastline of Sardinia. All in all, the sailing area is quite small but plenty for 1 or even 2 weeks of discovery. The French island of Corsica lies only 15 miles to the north.

With both Corsica and Sardinia hosting tall mountain ranges, the winds channeling through between the islands can get high – upwards of 30 knots should not be unreasonably expected. For this reason, we list the Costa Smeralda as an “Intermediate Plus” sailing location. Plus, you’d better be confident at your Mediterranean Mooring skills with a cross wind.

Below we provide several itineraries, by which you can see that not everything can be visited in just a 1 week charter.

What takes up so much time when sailing this area is the stunningly gorgeous beaches which is generally unusual for the Med. You just want to hang out all day. But alas you must drop anchor, swim, snack and sip, then pull anchor and move on to the next, and then to the next. In the evening you pull into a marina and visit the night life of the village. Then you do it all over again. The trick is to find the best beaches and stops – of which there are bountiful. Extreme jealousy of yachtie cruisers who hang in this area for the summer months has solidly set in.

When doing a weeklong charter in the Med you typically can only pick up the boat on Saturday late afternoon and you get off the boat at 9am the following Saturday but you must be back in port the Friday night. This gives you 5 nights out. In rare circumstances and only if you book in advance for an extra fee of about €200, your boat will be first on the list for cleaning from the previous charter and you can leave the marina at 2 pm on Saturday (so long as your boat has not suffered any damage from the previous charterer and the cleaning crew has completed their job).

For a Mediterranean charter then, you must choose wisely as to your 5 nights out. We think we did a pretty good job having done tons and tons of digital research on the area combined with accounting for the practicality of distance and sailing speed – and considering the mandatory beach stops. BUT – you must also ensure you have some flexibility built into the plan especially here where the wind can crank to nuclear levels. Even so, from our original plan, we deviated one night on the advice of a local captain we’d hired to skipper one of our flotilla boats. Notably, there is nothing more valuable than local knowledge.  For this reason, unless you’re hell-bent on skippering yourself, we always recommend hiring a local skipper to act as your guide for the week. We wrote a good blog article on this exact topic “ Why Hire a Skipper ”.

Speaking of why hire a skipper … the boats in our flotilla all elected to hire a hostess for the week. And while it is the Med with all the amazing restaurants, everywhere we all still felt it was a value proposition. Most evenings we ate early on board and then would venture out to hit the local wine bars thus not missing out on the nightlife but definitely missing out on the wait for a table and wait for food to arrive. The amount of restaurant money you save definitely covers the hostess’ weekly salary of about €1200 (but note you should plan on a good tip at the end of the week (€100  per person on the boat but with a minimum of €600).

The other benefit is coffee-ready and waiting when you arise with breakfast served. Gorgeous gourmet lunches and charcuterie boards are served in the afternoon. AND they do the dishes!!!!

Cala Dei Sardi Sardinia

Our Costa Smeralda Itinerary

We chartered out of Cala dei Sardi Marina which is about 15 miles north of Olbia City. At the marina there is nothing to do other than wait for your boat to be ready. There is a small restaurant there and bar and a nice lawn to lay on. The check in process is a bit of a cluster as everyone is also checking in on the same day. So you might wait your turn after you arrive for an hour or two – then wait for your boat to be ready.

For some reason, it takes over half an hour to sign some documents which slows the whole process down. Given that, we’d recommend if going out of this base, then pay for an early check-in option to get your boat by 2pm. The company we used is NSS of which NauticEd are charter agents – we don’t charge you an agency fee when you use NauticEd. It is the same price as going direct but we provide some other advantages of using us. See our blog article on “ Why Use an Agent ”.

The above kinda makes Saturday a bit of a wasted day (thus “Day 0”) especially if you are running around getting groceries. The nearest grocery store is a taxi ride away and taxis aren’t that prevalent. Note that when you get off the boat on the following Saturday morning MAKE SURE you have a taxi prebooked from several days before or prebook at the base upon check-in. If you don’t you could be waiting for hours.

Here is a link to the Detorri Supper Market in Portisco

Note that there are other marinas and charter companies in the Costa Smeralda that NauticEd can quote and advise if you’re considering chartering in this marvelous area.

Costa Smeralda

Day 1 – Cala Dei Sardi to Porto Cervo

Porto Cervo is a marina for the rich and famous. Prices are way beyond what most can flippantly afford and the marina cost was €350 for one night for our Lagoon 52. Still, it is a must-see and do at least once in a lifetime and a don’t miss. There is a small village with many restaurants and shops with all the big-name brands that you recognize. Super yachts are abound with the lowly $10M dollar ones parked at the end of the quay. They display the $100M ones out front, and besides, they wouldn’t want anyone walking off the ultra-expensive yachts to break a heel walking to the local Gucci shop. LOL

Porto Cervo

On the way to Porto Cervo for the evening we stopped at several beaches to get the week of emerald water started. We’d definitely recommend    Princes beach (Spiaggia del Pincipe). We sailed past the tiny island of Mortorio of which the bay on the southwest would definitely deserve an early stop if you can get out of the marina early enough. The coast headed towards Port Cervo is open to the easterly swell so a well-protected bay stop is Gulfo Pevero.

Spi à ggia = Beach

Day 2 – Porto Cervo to La Maddalena Marina Mangiavolpe

Speaking of the lifestyles of the rich and famous, for most of the week we had Jeff Bezos and his three-masted 300 ft gorgeous monstrosity following us around with his 250 ft support ship and helicopters. We tried to get an Amazon delivery of a few extra rolls of toilet paper but we guessed the helicopters were being used for other services.

Our first stop out of Porto Cervo was a bay on the east side of Caprera called Cala Coticcio. It’s a deep water anchorage with impressive rock cliffs (and emerald-colored water). Bezos’ boats followed us in there and then we later sailed off their bow in Golfo Saline on the mainland of Sardinia on our way to La Maddalena Marina Mangiavolpe.

La Maddalena Marina Mangiavolpe is a great stop and a really nice village – it’s a must-stop. There is a large grocery store there which in fact brings up the point of not provisioning too much on your first day. When sailing this area you can reprovision almost every day. At the grocery store, I bought some fresh Mediterranean sardines (when in Sardinia) which I insisted our hostess bake for lunch. Under protest of stinking out the boat, she came out with the most wonderful baked breaded sardine serving – wow! The village also has a good nightlife and restaurants.

Costa Smeralda

Day 3 – La Maddalena Marina Mangiavolpe to Santa Teresa

Many times, Santa Teresa is left off an itinerary because of its distance to the west. But we say it is worth the stop. It is a very well protected marina with a large bustling village on top of the cliff above the marina with a bar with an amazing view. There is lots to do and discover in Santa Teresa so try your best to get there early in the afternoon, despite all the amazing beach stops on the way. Getting to Santa Teresa was directly into a 20 knot wind on this day but given the waves we had a blast getting soaked by lying on the forward tramp with our swimsuits on and goggles on our faces.

Also while in Santa Teresa I shot this top tip for a Sailing Vacation:

Day 4 – Santa Teresa to Porto Cavallo

Here we departed from our original itinerary on the advice of our local skipper to venture to Porto Cavallo which technically is in France just south of Corsica. This is a small resort island not too glitzy but some very famous people own homes here. We had the marina almost entirely to ourselves. Just outside the marina was one of the nicer beaches in the area to swim at with a big difference being that we were the only ones there. A big change from all the other beaches which are generally pretty packed.

With all our boats backed to the dock, we held a rotating progressive dinner on each boat. The hostesses from each boat made a huge amount of delicious food and we all just socialized on the dock and ate and drank the night away. That was fun.

Porto Cavallo France

Day 5 – Porto Cavallo to Cannigione

We sailed back to Italy from France where we shot this fun little clip as we crossed the watery border.

One of the problems with enjoying an evening in a marina village with your friends in a cool foreign place is trying to get going early in the morning to enjoy everything the next day has to offer. We weren’t very good at doing this I admit but the advice is sound – get up and get going. Even if the others a sleeping on the boat while you move out. Otherwise, simply you miss out on too much. “Sleep when you are dead”.

Arzachena Steps Sardinia

The picturesque steps at Arzachena

From Porto Cavallo to Cannigione there are a ton of great stops, but we wanted to get to Cannigione early in the afternoon so that we could to a land visit to Arzachena – a taxi ride inland 10 miles to visit this quaint village with an incredible painted stairway.

A big problem ( at least for American tourists) is that every bloody store closes for a few hours in the afternoon for a siesta. So afternoon shopping and café drinking is out. Despite that, we had a good tour of Arzachena and got the photo.

The port in Cannigione – whew – well that was an interesting challenge of patience and brought to reality what I teach about med mooring your boat. As the skipper, you have to control your boat but also make sure that your crew is listening to you and following your plan NOT the marina workers – now of course you can change your plan to match the desires of the marina workers but you don’t want two opposite agendas going on. In this particular marina, the woman driving the dinghy to direct us was yelling in Italian knowing we don’t speak much more than “Duo Cappocino por favore” and confusing everyone.

Fortunately, my well-trained crew by this time knew not to listen and we just perfectly docked the boat – not quite to her liking but our stern was square to the dock where instead she wanted us cranked off 30 degrees which would not have worked. In addition, her dock workers could not tie a simple cleat hitch knot or throw a line. In the end, we thought it was funny. Keep your crew tight and following your lead when docking.

The village of Cannigione is large with lots of shops and restaurants and a nice beach to go to for a lazy afternoon swim.

Here’s a selfie video discussing the disgusting slime line and the marina dock crew. Top tip – wash your hands afterward really well.

Day 6 – Cannigione to Base Cala Dei Sardi

At Cannigione Marina, there is also a fuel dock to fill up before you take the boat back. So as long as you plan on mostly sailing back it is a good idea to fill here rather than at the base marina where everyone is trying to fill at the same time. P.S. The Marina Fuel dock worker confirmed that the dock person from the day before is crazy.

Here is a quick selfie summary video I shot of Cannigione and our Sardinia flotilla wrap up.

First stop after leaving Cannigione was Spiaggia del Grande Pevero.

Later on after leaving Spiaggia del Pevero, the wind really cranked up to 30 knots. But we were able to find the most protected gorgeous little beach all to ourselves. It was also a good stop since it was 20 minutes motor to the base where we arrived sad-faced at the designated 6pm time on Friday.

Beach Li Itriceddi

What an amazing flotilla this was – we had 58 guests and 8 local staff spread out among the boats. Every day was different, the wind and weather changed throughout. The water was warm (ish enough), crystal emerald clear, and everyone was amazing.

Still there was much wine and food left over for a good parting party that night.

' title=

Well, it is get up early and get off the boat day. Remember – organize a taxi prior don’t wait for today. We got lucky others did not and had to wait a long time.

For us, I rode a taxi to the airport and picked up a rent car for the coming trip by land down the east coast. See our land trip blog article – coming soon.

Our offer: one-week Costa Smeralda boat tour

costa-smeralda sailing tour

Day 1. Olbia – Porto San Paolo

14.94 km (9.28 nm)

First, we are sailing to Porto San Paolo, southeast of Olbia. The cosy town is famous for its welcoming guests, and it has a perfect location as well. There are beautiful islands nearby such as Isola Tavolara, Isala Molara, and Isola Piana. If you are here, you can choose from great sports opportunities like horse-riding, mountain biking, and golf.

Day 2. Porto San Paolo – Tavolara Island (Spalmatore di Terra)

4.63 km (2.88 nm)

After Porto Paolo, we are visiting the wonderful Tavolara Island, which is mostly famous for the fact that the world’s smallest kingdom can be found here. The highest point, Punta Cannone offers a fascinating view of the surrounding mountains as well as the Strait of Bonifacio and Corsica. The wonderful bays of the island are perfect for a nice swim. If you visit the place, you will find a bar and a restaurant here; still, nature is dominant on this breathtaking spot. There are unique bird species, mouflon and goats on the granite rocks.

Day 3: Tavolara Island (Spalmatore di Terra) – Golfo Aranci

13.33 km (8.29 nm)

Our next destination is Golfo Aranci where we must definitely visit the town centre. Thanks to its stylish shops and modern boardwalk, the town is different from other typical Sardinian towns. Once you are here, you should admire the gifts made from coral, and then choose from one of the fine restaurants that all offer delicious frutti di mare. Spend the night in the port of Golfo Aranci.

Day 4: Golfo Aranci – Porto Rotondo

17.21 km (10.69 nm)

The holiday resort is located between Cugnana Bay and Marinella Bay, 13 kilometres to the north from Olbia. There are picturesque beaches here, and the square called Piazzetta San Marco can be found in the centre. The Church of San Lorenzo is a must-see sight. If you get hungry, you can find many restaurants and cafés in Porto Rotondo, which also has a buzzing nightlife.

Day 5: Porto Rotondo – Portisco

1.84 km (1.14 nm)

Sailing around Costa Smeralda

Day 6: Portisco – Porto Cervo

16.49 km (10.24 nm)

Porto Cervo, which is the centre of Costa Smeralda, has become one of the most popular luxury resorts in Europe. The most beautiful sight in town is the Stella Maris Church. They built it in the 1960s and is characterised by a combination of Sardinian and modern architecture. One of the gems in Porto Cervo is the well-equipped port with its 500 berths. They organise an international sailing competition here every year between May and September. Are you looking for entertainment? You can find cosy places in towns such as the Sottovento Club or the English Lord Nelson Pub.

Day 7: Porto Cervo – Caprera (Pontile di Porto Palma) – Olbia

61.99 km (38.52 nm)

Caprera is located halfway between Corsica and Sardinia; it is a completely protected area. The island – covered with rocks and surrounded by pines – has many romantic, hidden bays. The most famous of them might be Cala Coticcio, also referred to as Tahiti Bay. The former house of Giuseppe Garibaldi is also a popular spot; this is where the Italian freedom fighter spent the last years of his life. The Caprera Sailing Centre – which is one of the oldest sailing centres in the country and is among the largest ones on the Adriatic Sea – can also be found on this island.

After we return our yacht, it is worth exploring Olbia if we still have some time. The town has breathtaking beaches like the Le Saline, the Dottore or the Porto Istana. Other famous sights include the National Archaeological Museum, the Basilica of San Simplicio and the Church of St. Paul the Apostle. The latter was built on ruins, and is really unique thanks to its dome – covered with colourful ceramic tiles – and its Venetian carved wooden pulpit. The cosy restaurant La Lanterna offers delicious pizzas. The place is also famous for the frutti di mare, the pecorino made from sheep’s milk and the grilled dishes. If you choose this restaurant, you can also expect a large selection of wines.

  • Ancient Sites – If you love historical and ancient sites, Sardinia has a lot to offer you. You will find the ancient sites discovered all across the island. Cruising aboard Costa Smeralda

There are many occasions that make a cruise special. One of the most beautiful is usually the first, but there is another feeling that I also really like: coming back. This is about my third and best experience aboard Costa Smeralda.

yacht in costa smeralda oggi

It's worth bundling up and experiencing it at least once during your trip.

yacht in costa smeralda oggi

In addition, there is a destination dish every night designed by one of the Michelin-starred chefs collaborating with Costa, inspired by the next port and included in the price .

yacht in costa smeralda oggi

You will have onboard discounts in places like the pizzeria, and even some free experiences that you can access as you level up.

yacht in costa smeralda oggi

The food was perhaps the best part of the cruise , as well as the rhythm and professionalism of the team in the dining room (I remember years ago that dinners were eternal).

yacht in costa smeralda oggi

A seven-day yacht tour of Costa Smeralda

  • Yacht Itineraries

Charter a luxury boat to make the best of your stay in Costa Smeralda

Watch the sea foam lap against the hull of your boat as you sail towards the bewitching beaches of Costa Smeralda , breathe in the scent of salt as you enjoy the calm lull of the waves miles off the shore, swim with the fish and spend wonderful hours in the sun until a magical sunset rewards you with the meeting of sky and sea. These are only some of the exciting activities you can enjoy on the exclusive experience of a luxury charter in Costa Smeralda .

But what is the best itinerary of a seven-day spell in Costa Smeralda? Our recommended tour moves from the South to the North of the island, across the unforgettable landscapes of this beautiful land.

Costa Smeralda Yacht

The Marine Protected Area of Tavolara/Punta Coda di Cavallo (1 day)

Reward yourself with a visit to the Marine Protected Area of Tavolara/Punta Coda di Cavallo before embarking on your seven-day charter in Costa Smeralda . A combination of strips of sand, coves, promontories, and bays makes this spot, located south of Golfo Aranci, one of the most interesting destinations of the Mediterranean.

Golfo Aranci (1 day)

Sail north towards the transparent waters of Golfo Aranci whose shallow seabed is a great diving spot with a rich marine life that includes a population of dolphins (monitored by the nearby Bottlenose Dolphin Research Institute ). Before leaving, have a relaxing walk on the long strip of sand of Cinque Spiagge di Golfo Aranci or on the tiny Spiaggia Bianca , dotted with wild lilies and the typical Mediterranean scrub.

Porto Rotondo (1 day)

Spiaggia Ira is the third stop of your luxury charter in Sardinia . This famous destination with the little harbor, popular with celebrities, owes its name to Princess Ira Furstenberg who would walk to the local beach from her nearby villa. Porto Rotondo boasts an exciting nightlife. Crowded spots are the trending Country Club disco and the bars al Tartarughino, al Paguro, and al Boccondivino.

Punta-Capriccioli-Costa-Smeralda-Yacht

La Maddalena archipelago (2 days)

Spend a day in the enchanting waters of Santa Maria and Isola di Spargi, in La Maddalena Archipelago. Stroll among La Maddalena’s 19th century buildings and on its cobbled alleys lined with typical shops and boutiques. The private harbor of La Scogliera Restaurant , in Porto Massimo, has easy anchoring for yachts. A favorite destination of sportsmen and politicians, it prides itself on the delicious cuisine of Executive Chef Massimo Guzzone that makes exclusive use of local fish and shellfish.

Spend one more day in La Maddalena Archipelago on your yacht tour of Costa Smeralda and visit Isola di Budelli ’s amazing pink beach. The island that has counted only one inhabitant since 1989, is a quiet corner of paradise and unspoiled nature, far from Sardinia’s crowded spots. The beach’s unique pink color is due to shells fragments containing a tiny microorganism living in the posidonias that grow close to the beach and are dragged on the sand by the wind and marine currents.

Before heading off, stop at Cala Granara , one of Sardinia’s most enchanting bays and only accessible by sea.

Porto Cervo (2 days)

Your tour ends in Porto Cervo at the comfortable Luxury Collection Hotel Pitruzza . Treat yourself to a vast choice of amenities and dining options and enjoy a regenerating day before heading off to the town’s small historical center. The famous Piazzetta delle Chiacchiere boasts luxury shops and a maze of narrow alleys.

One Ocean MBA’s Conference and Regatta Concludes

YCCS One Ocean

Saturday 21 st September saw the end of the 16th edition of the One Ocean MBA's Conference and Regatta , held for the first time in Porto Cervo. The event, organised by the SDA Bocconi School of Management and by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda with the partnership of the One Ocean Foundation, saw the participation of about 400 students from top international business schools in Sardinia for three days of sports and discussions themed around environmental sustainability .

On the 20 th September, the sporting calendar saw 51 teams divided into Offshore and Cruise Classes competing in coastal races, while 14 teams in the Open Class competed in windward-leeward races aboard J/24s. On the final day, 21 st September, strong Scirocco winds at over 20 knots kept the teams ashore.

The Open Class was won by the MIP School of Management who placed first twice. They were followed by the teams from the MIT SLOAN School of Management and the Moscow School of Management SKOLKOVO, in second and third places respectively.

one ocean MBA 1

Riccardo Bonadeo, Commodore of the YCCS and Executive Vice President of the One Ocean Foundation said: "My congratulations go to the winners of this event and to everyone who participated. I hope that you enjoyed the YCCS hospitality. I think that the location for this event, held for the first time in Costa Smeralda, shows just how important this mission is for us and proves that it's fundamental to promote a culture of environmental sustainability.

one ocean MBA 5

After the opening greetings, Maria Cristina Finucci spoke at the Conference about her personal professional experience and about her most recent work including the installation titled HELP. She underlined how communicating through emotions is key to sensitise people regarding pollution and environmental themes.

Paul Rose, the explorer famous for his work with National Geographic, spoke about his passion for nature and how through his profession he has put that passion to work for science, saying: "When I was young I thought that the ocean's water could wash away anything as if by magic," he said referring to a time when pollution in the oceans had a different awareness. "But today we are all more or less aware of pollution and its consequences, we hear talk every day about environmental and ecological disasters and we all are more attuned to the problem.

“Change is happening, for example the fighting illegal fishing or the establishment of protected marine areas. Personally, I'm an optimist and I think that the changes that are being implemented to preserve nature will help future generations to form an innovative and not old-fashioned outlook towards nature and that outlook will help them make strategic decisions in the years to come."

one ocean MBA 6

"Knowledge generates change" were the words that the Conference's moderator, the Professor Maurizio Dallocchio, used to close the talks as he underlined the fundamental role that information plays in decision making. In this case, in decision making that has an impact on environmental sustainability.

The MBA's Conference & Regatta is an event that was created 16 years ago on the initiative of the SDA Bocconi School of Management's Sailing Club. Up to today 4,000 students and alumni of Master in Business Administration programmes have participated. This event also saw SLAM participating as Technical Partner.

At the 2019 edition of this event there were 26 business schools including the Cambridge Judge Business School, the Chicago Booth School of Business, the Columbia Business School, the Cornell Johnson Graduate School of Management, the Cranfield School of Management, the ESADE Business School, the GOETHE Business School, the Harvard Business School, HEC, the HKUST Business School, IE Business School, IESE Business School, INSEAD, KELLOGG - WHU, the London Business School, the Manchester Business School, the MIP School of Management, the MIT SLOAN School of Management, the Rotterdam School of Management, the SAUDER School of Business, the SKOLKOVO Moscow School of Management, TUCK School of Business, the Warwick Business School, the WHARTON School of the University of Pennsylvania, YALE School of Management and the SDA BOCCONI School of Management.

Germania, a Solingen uomo attacca passanti con un coltello alla festa cittadina: «Tre morti e diversi feriti. L'aggressore è ancora in fuga»
