AMERICAN MAGIC AND QUANTUM RACING LAUNCH A NEW CHAPTER IN AMERICAN SAILING

American Magic and Quantum Racing are to join forces and form a high-performance partnership for the 2023 season - the first time both teams have formally collaborated. Quantum Racing will evolve and rebrand as "Quantum Racing, powered by American Magic."

Building on the success of winning this year's TP52 World Championship and the 52 Super Series title, Quantum Racing, powered by American Magic, will incorporate America's best young talent with experienced global talent. As a result, the sailing team will continue to compete in the 52 Super Series, the world’s leading monohull competition. Quantum Racing, powered by American Magic, will seek to enhance the skill and experience of these two globally recognized teams to ensure that a new group of young American sailors is given a platform to progress. In addition, the team will provide them with access to the overarching American Magic franchise and the broader American marine industry. American Magic Team Principal Doug DeVos believes that harnessing talent in the United States is vital to the future of American Sailing as American Magic aims to progress and expand the sport.

DeVos said about his aspirations: "We want to bring the America's Cup back home to the United States, to be successful in the 52 Super Series, and to allow our sailors to grow and thrive on a clear development pathway. 

I'm excited about this new chapter and looking forward to staying personally connected to the 52 Super Series and further involvement with the America's Cup. American Magic is striving to be a unified sailing franchise that will bring the best young American sailing talent together to develop their skills and knowledge on different classes of boats. The best way to maintain a winning team is to nurture our homegrown talent."

Terry Hutchinson, Skipper and President of Sailing Operations for NYYC American Magic, added: "American Magic is a high-performance sailing team that is focused on winning the 37th America's Cup; within that, we're also developing a pathway for the younger generation of sailors, engineers, boatbuilders, and technicians to enhance the marine industry inside the United States and set us on a trajectory of being a leader on the world stage."

American Magic and Quantum Racing will announce further details in the build-up to the 2023 season.

Quantum Racing: World’s coolest yachts

Yachting World has been asking top sailors and marine industry gurus to choose the coolest and most innovative yachts of our times, and Terry Hutchinson nominated Quantum Racing. Here’s the report :

Terry Hutchinson is tactician for the Quantum Racing TP52 and nominates the team’s Botin-designed USA 52018. “The most recent Quantum Racing and this entire generation of TP52s have been a good step beyond the 2015 fleet,” he says.

The TP52 is a box rule class, with rules tweaked in agreement with the owners to maintain close racing. In 2017, the class voted that the latest updates, which included increased stiffness and rig refinements, would remain in place for three years.

That guarantee contributed to an impressive nine new boats being launched in 2018 (post-COVID the class has since agreed no further changes until 2025). Quantum Racing won the 2022 Super Series overall title, their fifth series win.

“The class makes these boats incredible to race. It is the perfect balance of design, cutting edge technology, performance, and teamwork that allows one to succeed on the water,” he says. “Top speed I have experienced is 30.9 knots – simply awesome!”

American owner-driver Doug DeVos steered Quantum Racing to overall victory at the ABANCA 52 Super Series Baiona Sailing Week lifting the first regatta title of the five which comprise the tenth anniversary season of the world’s leading grand prix monohull circuit.

Four times overall champions since the circuit started in Barcelona in May 2012 Quantum Racing managed to impose themselves as the circuit visited the rugged Atlantic coast of Galicia on the north west corner of Spain, responding best to the challenges and demands of a completely new, dynamic race course area . The picturesque Ría de Vigo served up a welcome variety of wind conditions, from seven to 24 knots over the eight races which were contested. The first four days were sailed in northerly winds but today’s showdown finale for the first time encountered a demanding SW’ly sea breeze. With a hard won second place behind Andy Soriano’s Alegre in Race 8 Quantum Racing may have secured the Baiona regatta title by seven points but there were some distinctly nervous moments when a Race 9 was started in a gentle breeze and the champions elect were judged to be over the start line early. Rounding the top mark in ninth with Phoenix first it looked like the regatta leaders had snatched defeat from the jaws of victory until the race was abandoned in the fading, wildly shifting breeze. The American flagged team, which many consider to be the enduring benchmark operation over the ten year history of the circuit, actually record their first regatta win since Cascais in 2019 and tactician Terry Hutchinson’s first TP52 regatta win since 2018. With three wins and two seconds in their aggregate tally of 19 points from the eight races Quantum Racing are clearly in excellent shape in terms of both boat speed and crew work.

A relieved but visibly delighted Terry Hutchinson tactician on the victorious crew:

“It is awesome to win. But the exciting part is that we have so much room to get better. There are mental mistakes made, like that last one. We did not need it, we were starting loose to leeward and the last thing we needed was to do that. But these are things that will make us better. While it was self-imposed it is a sign of the team on board that we bounced back and we are not going to let that moment mar the success of the week. There is a lot of racing ahead of us now this season and this fleet is really, really good.” Harm Müller Spreer’s Platoon remain their super consistent selves but count two fifth places in their scoreline and did not manage to make the top two often enough to really challenge Quantum Racing. They finished just one point ahead of Tom Slingsby and a very strong Phoenix team who were harmed by one bad 14pts day.

Victor Marino, Platoon’s runners controller who is from Baiona, commented:

“Second is a good result even if it does not always feel like that because we always want to win. But Quantum really sailed super strong. To be in the top three in this fleet and if we could be in the top three at every event this season we would surely be in with a shot at the title. The conditions have been perfect, the race area was super open, options for everyone. I think it is a place we will come back to.” And Slingsby was sanguine at their third but is looking forwards to next month’s Rolex TP52 World Championships in Cascais:

“Unfortunately we made a few too many mistakes on one day and that compromised us in the end. We lost a lot of points on that day but overall I am happy with the way we sailed on four of the five days. But we showed we are in the hunt. This is a beautiful venue but the race course is tough. You have to keep your wits about you. Sometimes the corners worked, sometimes the middle worked. It was a very challenging race course. But hopefully we will be back here soon.”

The next event of the 52 Super Series 2022 will be held out of the Portuguese town of Cascais. From 20 to 25 June, the Rolex TP52 World Championship Cascais 2022 will see the 2022 TP52 World title at stake. Takashi Okura’s Sled will defend the crown won last November in Mallorca.

The US racing team Quantum Racing is making history with its fifth season championship in the tenth anniversary season of the 52 Super Series. In the light wind final in Barcelona, the German helmsmen Tina Plattner ("Phoenix") and Harm Müller-Spreer ("Platoon") and their crews did not have enough chances to catch up.

Luck was on their side at the 52 Super Series season finale in Barcelona for the leaders of the US racing team Quantum Racing. In very light winds, only five of ten races could be completed. This was not enough for the Quantum hunters on Hasso and Tina Plattner's "Phoenix" and Harm Müller-Spreer's "Platoon" to catch up with the top team this season.

The Americans around league co-founder and Quantum team boss Doug De Vos were deservedly crowned season champions in the future America's Cup metropolis of Barcelona after winning four out of five possible regattas in the leading Grand Prix series for monohulls. Quantum Racing also took gold at the 2022 Rolex TP-52 World Championship, which had previously been won twice by the team of Hamburg's Harm Müller-Spreer.

Coxswain Tina Plattner shone with a race day that all professionals dream of

The fact that Hasso and Tina Plattner's "Phoenix" still had a chance of catching the leading team Quantum Racing in the battle for the season championship before the Barcelona finale showed just how close things are in the highly demanding construction class. When helmswoman Tina Plattner managed a race day with her world-class tactician, SailGP king, Olympic champion and Moth world champion Tom Slingsby with the results 3-1-2, things actually got tight again.

In her first regatta since February 2020, Tina Plattner and the "Phoenix" team sailed to within three points of Quantum on this golden day. "Tina has an enormous and rare power of concentration and stamina," said Slingsby, paying tribute to the 44-year-old. However, tenth place in the fifth and already final race in the flat airs meant the knockout blow for "Phoenix" in the battle for the season championship. Despite many attempts by the persistent and experienced professional race management team led by Maria Torrijo, it was no longer possible to sail on the final day.

The who's who of regatta sport celebrated the season finale in Barcelona

Harm Müller-Spreer's "Platoon" team also had to settle for second place behind Quantum Racing in the final Barcelona standings, despite a significant improvement after an initially mixed season. This resulted in third place in the season rankings for the owner and helmsman from the Norddeutscher Regatta Verein. The new constellation with tactician Vasco Vascotto, who replaced John Kostecki in the current season, is working well. "We have his commitment for next year," said Harm Müller-Spreer in Barcelona, "we want to and can win again."

The large family of the 52 Super Series celebrated its roots in Barcelona this weekend with a lavish party in the imposing Gothic ambience of the historic Llotja de Barcelona building. Half the America's Cup entourage was gathered as the owners, teams, professional sailors, organisers and hosts celebrated their winners, the season and the anniversary. "Quantum Racing tactician Terry Hutchinson said: "Ten years of 52 Super Series, here we are! It's an incredible tribute to the owners and drivers of this class. How lucky we are as sailors and as professionals to have the support of Hasso Plattner, Doug De Vos, Harm Müller-Spreer and everyone else." "Phoenix" tactician Tom Slingsby said: "We are happy with second place overall. It's a great result for the Phoenix team. Quantum was the best team. We were lucky to win our first regatta in Puerto Portals under these circumstances. The best team won the series, the best team won the world championship, but we are happy to have finished second in the series."

The end of the 2022 season will conclude the first ten years of the 52 Super Series' history. Since its inception in May 2012, the series has attracted 30 teams from 15 nations and contested 51 events at 17 venues in six countries and three continents (Europe, America and Africa). Quantum Racing and Tony Langley's Gladiator are the only teams to have taken part in all ten seasons. At the Llotja de Barcelona, everyone toasted the next ten years together. The new era begins in 2023 - with "Phoenix" and "Platoon".

Long time Audi MedCup Circuit competitors and fans Quantum Racing are the first of several teams to announce that they will campaign a new build boat for next season. Today at the Region of Sardinia Trophy in Cagliari Quantum Racing announced that they will build a new boat for the 2011 Circuit.

Their 2008 Audi MedCup championship winning programme was the culmination of investment and participation on the world’s leading regatta circuit, having competed with Lexus in the inaugural year 2005, through the Quantum-powered Warpath and Windquest before the present Quantum Racing (USA) took to the water in 2008. Quantum Racing finished second last year, and lie second overall on the 2010 Audi MedCup Circuit.

The new Quantum Racing will follow a very similar established winning recipe, being designed by Botin Carkeek and built in Spain by Chimo Lopez Longtitude Zero in Burriana, ready for launching and work up in the Mediterranean early next season.

Project manager Ed Reynolds, President of Quantum Sail Design Group said:

“ We want to support the Audi MedCup. I’ve watched for years when a new one design class or a new boat comes out  and it’s always like ‘well if you sell six boats we’ll buy one’. Somebody just has to stand up first and say ‘we believe the direction, we believe the new concept and we like the new boats.”

“We’re going to be here for a while and hopefully it will all kind of give enough confidence to some of the other teams to say yes, the Audi MedCup is going to be here for a while Let’s step up and go too”.

“The Audi MedCup is the most competitive, highest level of monohull racing ever, it is so intense, so defined, and I personally believe what’s happened with the Americas Cup with multihulls has created an amazing opportunity for the Medcup to truly take a grip of grand prix, the ultimate level of sailing in the world.”

Nacho Postigo (ESP), Audi MedCup Circuit Technical Director, added: “It is great that Quantum Racing is the first of a good number of teams to commit to building new boats for next year. It makes me very happy because they have been sponsoring a boat since Day 1, since 2005, and it proves well that the Circuit recovers your investment very nicely. That is on the business part of the equation.”

“But to have one of the teams which have been consistently top three returning is great, too, because it means that the high level will be maintained, but it is also a level which can be achieved by individual, private owners as well.”

“Pershings are built for drivers. These machines can be handled like boats half their size.The 7X’s powertrain consists of twin 1,800 hp MAN V-12 diesels whisking Top System T85 surface drives. On board, there’s something of a runaway-train feeling, with the nearly 70-foot yacht seeming as if it just doesn’t want to stop accelerating. The ride is exhilarating. The 7X is fast, even for a Pershing,” Yachting previously reported .

Board Quantum via a telescopic hydraulic passerelle. The yacht’s has 340 square feet of exterior deck space, 75 square feet of swim platform and 204 square feet of cockpit. The cockpit, swim platform, side decks and foredeck are all clad in teak. Relax on an L-shaped dinette with a teak table and two chairs, which is shaded by the hardtop, or improve that tan on a sofa and sun pad aft that can be shaded with a Bimini top. Fiberglass cabinets to port and starboard provide plenty of stowage, along with a locker under the sofa. Grill lunch on the cockpit grill before heading down to the electro-hydraulic swim platform for a swim. The swim platform has room for a few guests to lay out in the sun. Looking for a little privacy? Walk up to the foredeck, which is set up with sun pads and a chaise-style lounge that easily accommodates four to six guests.    

Quantum ’s salon is accessed through a hideaway aluminum-and-crystal door from the cockpit. Slide open the door and retract the window and door to create an open-air environment from the helm to cockpit. The first thing I noticed were the two sizable sunroofs, side windows and windscreen that allows natural light to illuminate the salon and helm. Guests can relax on the portside aft L-shaped fabric sofa with a foldable wooden, high-low table and two leather folding chairs. An entertainment center is to starboard.

Forward of the salon is Quantum ’s Naviop-Simrad equipped helm station to starboard and a chaise-style lounge to port. The captain’s chair, co-pilot chair and helm wheel are covered with Poltrona Frau leather with all controls comfortably within arm’s reach. The helm is set up with the following electronics and navigation systems:

• Instrument dashboard in GRP painted
• Integrated panel for alarms and electrical data management
• Bow thruster joystick
• Trim joysticks
• Trim tabs joysticks
• Rudder angle, flap and trim display
• Electronic levers for engine controls
• Engine room remote camera on plotter screen
• OBD (On Board Diagnostic) socket
• Double USB watertight socket
• Port and starboard side electric window
• Windshield in transparent tempered glass
• Windshield wiper/washer (2)

Stairs between the helm station and chaise-style lounge lead to the lower deck where the galley and staterooms are located. The galley has Corian countertops, providing plenty of space for meal prep. It’s also equipped with a four-burner ceramic glass cooktop, oven, stainless-steel sink and dishwasher. Other galley amenities include:

• Digitally controlled A/C system
• Floor covered by parquet
• Lacquered ceiling
• Lacquered hanging lockers with internal shelf
• Led ceiling lights
• Light underneath shelves
• Opening porthole in stainless steel with mechanic hook
• Soft touch switch plates
• Under top lacquered unit furniture with opening doors, internal shelves and drawers
• Walls covered in unsealed wood

After a long day on the water, owners and guests can retire to one of Quantum’ s three en suite staterooms. The 172-square-foot master stateroom has a double-sized berth with a leather frame and two nightstands. Stowage is available for personal belongings in drawers, shelves, vanity, a wardrobe locker with wooden doors and mirror and a built-in safe.There is also a flat-screen TV and an ottoman. The VIP stateroom also has a double berth with leather bed frame, reading lamps and backlit leather panels above the berth. There is also a wardrobe locker and mirror. The final guest stateroom has two twin-size berths with stowage underneath and a wood nightstand. A captain’s cabin is also available.

Launched in September of 2018, the current Bella Mente is a Maxi 72 designed by Botin Partners in Spain and built by New England Boatworks in Rhode Island.
