Maiora 35 Exuma Reviewed

  • By Phil Draper
  • May 31, 2024

Maiora 35 Exuma

The first Maiora I ever reviewed was an 80-foot flybridge called Max & Ale , back in the mid-1990s. It had a dark, high-gloss, flame-cut mahogany interior with a lot of bright, canary-yellow upholstery. That yacht had a personality, plain and simple.

More recently, I got aboard Pesa II , which is a Maiora 35 Exuma , and I wondered what kind of personality a yacht with the model designation Exuma might have. Despite all my years of getting on boats, I have never visited the Bahamas—a massive omission for someone in my deck shoes, I know. But alas, it’s all too true, for now at least. My online search led me to the Bahamian musician Tony McKay, also known as Exuma, who is currently my go-to life soundtrack. Soon, I was reading up on the island chain that runs southeast of Nassau down to Great Exuma. Pals with years of experience cruising those shoal waters tell me the Exumas are some of the most idyllic islands in the world, especially if you like scuba diving. But you do need the right boat to get the most out of them, with a shoal draft and good speed.

Maiora 35 Exuma

Pesa II is just such a yacht. This 115-foot composite trideck launched last May with a striking, silver-metallic livery and an unusual general arrangement.

Approaching from the stern, guests step aboard at the swim platform. Curved “palazzo steps” extend across the transom. While the cockpit is conventional enough—it has a sun pad and booth-sofa island, as well as stairs to the deck above—what lies beyond is far from ordinary. You could say this yacht is almost a wide-body, or even that it has partial asymmetry. At the main-deck level, it has a sizable salon with a single, well-protected side deck to port and a full-beam owners’ stateroom forward, plus a few other surprises.

Maiora 35 Exuma

The salon aboard Pesa II has three zones. An L-shaped sofa is to port, with a dining table for eight to 10 guests forward, and a pair of armchairs and a coffee table to starboard. The views through picture windows make the whole space feel special.

Above, the upper deck is accessed via stairs that arch between an amidships lobby to starboard, and a pantry and the main galley to port. The upper deck is a supremely flexible entertainment space. It has outdoor sun loungers and an inside sky lounge, which, on Pesa II , has a sofa to starboard and formal dining forward to port. There’s also a three-monitor bridge console with a centerline pilot seat flanked by double bench seats, all upholstered in a diamond-stitched cream leather.

Maiora 35 Exuma

Side doors access wing stations and, ultimately, the foredeck terrace. Beyond those side doors, the whole deck space can be opened up to the elements via a sliding sunroof, drop-down side glazing and the aft-deck doors. The Maiora team calls the space a “fly on demand” because it almost becomes one enormous flybridge.

This design is most unusual for also providing a smaller wheelhouse forward on the main deck. It has doors on each side that access the working foredeck, and a dogleg staircase to port that connects with the crew area belowdecks. The crew space has a galley and mess to port, a captain’s double-berth cabin to starboard, and two twin-bunk cabins on each side of the fo’c’sle.

Maiora 35 Exuma

The owners’ stateroom has a forward-facing super-king berth with a vanity/desk to port and a corner sofa to starboard. Its en suite and walk-in closet are forward. Pesa II ’s guest accommodations are belowdecks: four double-berth staterooms accessed from an amidships lobby. The aft stateroom’s double berths convert to twins, and one of the staterooms aboard Pesa II has a Pullman berth. The other two guest staterooms are amidships, one of them a larger VIP. Both have double berths, and the VIP’s berth is positioned for great views of the outdoors.

There’s an organic feel to Pesa II ’s interior, which Maiora’s creative team worked up with the yacht’s owners. A big-block parquet sole with matte oaks and bleached-walnut veneer detailing sets the tone. The sky lounge has a teak sole. The color palette throughout the yacht features whites, creams, fawns and taupes, as well as bright marbles for tables and bathrooms. It’s a soft, contemporary vibe that, to my eye, has a hint of the late 1960s and early 1970s in the low-furniture choices. Virtually everything is curved, ribbed, rounded or radiused. All of the mirrors are irregular shapes, and they bounce around the natural light that comes through the glazing.

Maiora 35 Exuma

And then, there’s performance. Despite the yacht’s near-plumb bow, which maximizes the waterline length at displacement speeds, everything below the waterline is aimed at planing performance. There’s a V-hull form with spray rails and chine flats. Power is triple 2,000 hp MTU 12V 2000 M96X diesels paired to triple MJP water jets. The two outer jets are steerable, and the center one serves as a booster.

Maiora’s quoted top speed is normally 35 knots, but Pesa II ’s top-end is a couple of knots slower. This yacht is available for charter, and it has “night mode” lithium-ion batteries that supply hotel loads without running the engines—a great feature, but one that adds significant battery weight. Thus, Pesa II ’s top speed is 33 knots, with a fast cruise around 27 knots.

Maiora 35 Exuma

More speed is possible with bigger engines. The third Maiora 35 Exuma has triple 2,600 hp Caterpillar diesels and a reported top speed of 42 knots. As for range, Pesa II should manage around 1,250 nautical miles at 10 knots.

Water-jet-propelled vessels have their advantages. They not only allow for a relatively small engine room aft, but they also are highly maneuverable. They have far less vibration and are ideally suited to shoal-water cruising, with no protruding props or shafts. The maximum draft on Pesa II is just 4 feet, 7 inches, and that’s at a full-load displacement of 375,000 pounds. Yachts with water jets can also deliver a crash stop, which normally means hauling up within not much more than a boat length from any speed.

Maiora 35 Exuma

For tenders, there are two garages aboard the Maiora 35 Exuma. One is aft beneath the cockpit for an 11-foot-6-inch service tender or two PWC, while the other is a “dry” transverse space for a 21-foot main tender. That’s a good-size ride to head out in for some exploring, but with so much to enjoy on board the Maiora 35 Exuma, most owners and guests won’t be gone for too long.

The First Exuma

The first Maiora 35 Exuma, Lady Nina , was delivered in 2020 to Central American owners. It is now based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and was exhibited at the most recent Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. It has a darker, contemporary interior, and triple 1,925 hp Cats for a top speed of 35 knots.

Jet Experts

The Next Yacht Group has more experience with water-jet installations than most other yacht builders in the Maiora 35 Exuma’s size segment. This group has been delivering such craft consistently for well over 30 years.

What’s in a Name?

The Maiora name comes from the Latin phrase ad maiora, which roughly translates as “toward greater things.” A new range of Exumas is being worked up by architect Marco Casamonti, whose first project with the Next Yacht Group is the AB110 expected to debut later this year.

Made in Italy

Formerly known as FIPA Italiana Yachts, the Next Yacht Group is headquartered in Viareggio, a resort city on Italy’s west coast that is home to many of the nation’s best-known yacht builders. The group includes the Maiora, AB and CBI Navi brands. Maioras are built in Viareggio, while Maiora Exumas and ABs are built in nearby Massa. The CBI Navi brand is reserved for custom metal vessels.

Francesco Guidetti – AD MAIORA: a wonderful story about boats

Guidetti at the helm since 1979.

Stefano Navarrini interview with Francesco Guidetti

Maiora is deeply rooted in the Italian yachting world. Today it is a prestigious brand and part of – AB Yachts – CBI Navi. Francesco Guidetti has been at the helm since 1979. He’s well positioned to bring together motor yachting’s past to the present without forgetting to peep into what the future has in store.

Francesco Guidetti greets us with a broad welcoming, sincere smile and shows us into his elegant office in Viareggio: new offices, placed in a modern and elegant building contoured with palm trees In Miami Style overlooking the marina’s quays just a stone’s throw away. Some of his boats are moored right opposite, they’re splendid motor yachts which tell you about luxury and tradition, sober elegance and quality builds which to the discerning eye are recognizable even at some distance. Maiora from Viareggio are all of this and something more too. The company’s name may in fact be new to many, but behind it there’s a long story made up of important mile stones, above all when talking about Maiora, a historical brand name of the group which Guidetti has been at the head of since 1979. Almost from the inception of GRP with which to build yachts, Guidetti, likes to refer to himself as being diversely young, he claims he began to build boats at 9 or 10 years old, yes they were tiny models copied out of yachting magazines and through time he probably put much of the Italian Yachting industry’s know how under his belt.

ad maiora yacht

Passed through the recession, he recovered leadership by basing his success on features the market greatly appreciated. Maiora unites unmistakable style and the most advanced technology with practical reliable solutions, the availability to customize and refit yachts within the Group and pre-owned yacht management. Today there are three superyacht brands within the Group. Each features diverse specifications: Maiora a name which needs little introduction underscores continuity of tradition, AB Yachts instead sports thrilling performance aggressive models capable of more than fifty knots which appeal to young dynamic customers and CBI Navi which is dedicated to building over 30 metre motor yachts in steel and lightweight aluminium alloy. Francesco Guidetti is a likeable lively communicative, easy going gentleman, but let’s not forget that behind his affable simplicity there’s loads of experience and knowledge.

ad maiora yacht

Do you work the recreational motor yachting sector exclusively or do you also produce commercial vessels? I love all of the work and we have also built work boats, which is a sector I appreciate because you straight talk with the owner, you build him the boat he wants, you argue on the price, but once pen goes to paper there are no second thoughts, no modifications whatsoever. Motor yacht owners are much moodier, nevertheless when you create the right feeling they give considerable satisfaction. My preferred customer is one that has marine culture. I enjoy sharing and develop their ideas, possible solutions and I am satisfied when they understand me and maybe recognize the value, prestige, and quality there is in detail. Then there are Russian, Arab, Chinese customers with requests that are all too often singular. Let’s just say that my nautical culture brings me to prefer a client who visualizes his boat as a lifestyle rather than a status symbol. Today so much is given to exteriority, to what is shown. Potential customers coming here have some sea miles under their belts, they know what they want, and I am proud to add that among the many clients I have had there’s not one who’s not been more than happy and satisfied. Backtracking to professional craft, in the past we built some vessels for the military sector, but it is not an easy one at all, while a special market could be, vessels for charter, which due to their designated purpose requires they possess specific decor and interiors much like the ones on Maiora 36 Classic which we currently have here. Our clients typically consider their yachts something very personal. Of course were they to add up sets of figures in terms of costs measured against the real time spent enjoying their yachts in any given year, their numbers wouldn’t match at all.

You mentioned your capacity and availability to deliver high quality full custom yachts, so which are in fact the limits? Our yachts’ projects are mainly drawn up by the yard’s technical studio even if at times we seek consultants’ inputs. When a client comes along with his own project designer… no problem when talking about interiors in general, but should there be a request to modify something of the external lines, we’ll sit back to look, see, study and discuss the proposal because it has to be ‘doable’. Broadly speaking let’s say there are no real limits, because every modification stems from a serene and constructive discussion with the client during which we find a way to overcome any problem. The first Maiora WA which is due for launching this summer for example is a project built around the client’s requests, even if with a few original or unusual ones like a small pool installed at the stern end of the fly bridge and a mega garage aft in the stern end of the main deck in which to stow tenders and jet skis. Another unusual request I’ve come across has been for a sauna to be installed right up close to the sea because the owner liked the idea of diving into it as he came out of a steam bath. Often enough with figures on hand, it is easy to persuade the customer not to go for many of the unusual requests he’s made. There once was a keen customer who really wanted an AB Yacht with dual engines because he wanted to lower fuel consumption. Only after having shown him comparative analyses of the yacht of his choice, based on a cost per mile basis on a given boat speed he realized that with three engines rather than two he was going to save money.

Your yachts are built in both lightweight aluminium alloy and in steel or in GRP, are there any reasons which make you prefer one material to another? In my opinion there are precise rules. A metal built yacht under 30 metres from a potential client’s point of view is something I would never ask for because there are many problem areas involved and too few advantages. Sturdiness? Not as true as one may imagine, today a well built yacht in GRP has the same resistance to impact, the same performance, same shape and can cross oceans just as much as the metal one. But it has a clear advantage. The GRP yacht will never have to substitute metal sheets, will never have any rust in the bilges which is not something to be taken lightly. The metal is more pliable? well the same can be done for GRP , maybe the costs are different, but with today’s technological machinery and NC mills produce one off moulds easily enough and you then dispose of them, they’re not so expensive at all.

Let’s talk about market share and production: Which are your preferred areas and what’s your annual production? We’re a really close-knit-group and we’re positioned in a niche market which well responds to our competences. Obviously I can’t compete against series built yachts, but whoever is looking for a full custom yacht which will deliver his requests, will end up coming here where he will find stability of value for money, recognisability, and considerable appreciation from the yachting market as well as great resale value through time. Furthermore we have no real limit concerning size, even if today I am not keen on building enormous yachts when considering all of the related problems and risks involved that go with that enterprise. To do so I’d have to be certain of the result. For example I’m currently negotiating with a client who wants a 64 metre in GRP, an Arab, and he’s standing out of the chorus line and knows plenty about the sort of problems related to yachting and yachts. He’s very keen, mind you it would be a challenge and that stimulates me, let’s wait and see. As for the market in a general way let me say that the whole of the European basin but more especially the Mediterranean is the area which drives the sector the most, is where the hard core of our production is. This year we’re looking at three yachts, but next year there will be a further two. We’re about to launch a very interesting motor yacht from the Maiora range, that 30 metre Walk Around classic I mentioned earlier.

Have you recently noticed any significant change of trends in the market? Well after a certain period during which we were selling only over 40 metre superyachts, today the market is turning to smaller yachts, which also cost less to run and are easier to manage. The 30 metre we are about to launch for example, requires a crew of four at least that adds up to a substantial cost if you like but also a certain degree of invasiveness. A yacht of 20 -22 metres requires less crew, the owner will be able to steer, his wife could enjoy exploring new recipes, the boys can enjoy it with greater freedom. In other words we’re talking about a family yacht, where help can be provided by the household’s maid who can ensure the cleaning below decks and if need be lend a hand when mooring. That to me is a further incentive to build better, user friendly yachts where everything is more intuitive. MAIORA

How does the charter agreement work?

Once your chosen yacht has been confirmed, we will send you a standard MYBA or Goolets charter agreement that needs to be signed. If your chosen cruise route requires a different embarking or disembarking place other than the yacht's central harbor, delivery/redelivery fees may apply.

What are the payment terms?

After signing the MYBA or Goolets charter agreement, a deposit of 50% of the total charter cost is required. You can pay the fee via bank transfer or credit card (only Visa or MasterCard). The other 50%, an Advance Provisioning Allowance (if applicable), taxes, positioning fees, and any previously agreed charges are payable via bank transfer eight weeks before departure.

and any previously agreed charges needs to be settled via bank transfer six weeks before departure.

What are the actual operating expenses?

Once you made the final payment of the charter, you pay the Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA). Under MYBA terms, this fee is usually between 30% - 40% of the total charter cost.

This covers the operating expenses of a charter (explained under Charter Terms), such as fuel, food, drinks, port fees, and ad hoc incidentals. The APA is given to the captain before the start of your charter. Some yachts and gulets also offer food/drinks packages which are normally paid in cash during embarkation, while the port taxes are paid during embarkation according to the costs presented by the captain. The Captain ensures that the yacht is fully fuelled and stocked when you step on board.

While an up-to-date summary of accounts can be requested at any time during your charter, a full set of accounts will normally be submitted by your captain at the end of the cruise.

In case of surpassing the amount of money already paid during your yacht charter (with the APA), additional funds (in cash) will be required at once. If there is an outstanding balance from the yacht charter, it should be settled in cash or by bank transfer before you disembark. In case of a remaining credit at the end of your charter, you will be fully reimbursed.

If a transfer by car to and from the yacht is required, it can be arranged either by the charter company or by the yacht’s captain, payment for which will be deducted from your APA.

How can we make your yacht charter personalized?

To ensure a unique and tailor-made charter experience, we will send you a detailed questionnaire eight weeks before you embark on your yacht. You can tell us your group's preferences and special requirements, such as dietary or medical needs, any particular wishes regarding exercise, entertainment, or if you are celebrating a special occasion.

Are internet and satellite TV connections available onboard?

In case you really need to get some work done during your vacation, no worries. On most yachts, there is mobile broadband internet and satellite TV, so you will stay connected to the rest of the world. Just keep in mind that the service can be limited in some areas (you are in the middle of the sea after all). If you anticipate regular usage of the internet, let us know prior to embarking, as upgrades might be subject to availability and additional fees may apply.

Is smoking allowed onboard?

Smoking is permitted only on the outside decks, and on some yachts, only in dedicated outdoor areas. Please consult our charter brokers for more information. For safety reasons, smoking indoors is strictly prohibited on all yachts.

Are tips for the crew mandatory?

Even though tips are not mandatory, the guests normally extend a gratuity to the devoted crew. The amount depends on the guest's satisfaction, but it is approximately 10% of the charter fee. The tips are equally distributed among all crew members by the captain.

Should I get any insurance?

In case of unforeseen circumstances that might prevent the charter, we highly recommend taking out the Cancellation and Curtailment Insurance to protect the investment. Besides that, the guests should be covered by Personal Accident and Medical Insurance, and their belongings are insured against theft, loss, or damage. Charterers’ Liability insurance is also highly recommended. Contact your broker for further assistance and additional advice regarding the insurance.

How are the charter rates calculated?

Charter rates are estimated weekly. If a charter exceeds seven days, they are calculated pro-rata against the weekly rate divided by seven and multiplied by the number of charter days. Keep in mind that some yachts are only chartered on a weekly (Saturday-Saturday or Sunday-Sunday) basis, especially during the high season.

High and low season rates vary depending on charter locations and types of yachts. The high rates apply to the most popular charter periods (July/August and Christmas/New Year), and to all major events. Low season rates apply to all other periods.

The charter rates on our website are up to date but may be subject to change.

What are the charter terms?

Most charter rates are based on MYBA Terms, which entail that the yacht is in full commission, with all necessary equipment, properly insured for marine risks, and managed by a crew, whose wages, food, and clothing are the owner’s expense.

All other operating expenses are charged to the charterer and include (but are not limited to): fuel and lubricating oils for the yacht and her tenders; local taxes; pilotage; port, harbor, and marina dues; customs clearance; water and power; personal laundry; all provisions, wines, beers, spirits, soft drinks and consumables for the charterer’s group; shoreside excursions, telecommunication, and internet costs.

Please note that, occasionally, a yacht may offer an alteration on the terms described above. For further information about specific yachts, consult your broker.

Do any other taxes apply?

For charters in European waters, Value Added Tax and delivery costs may be charged on the gross Charter Fee, due to the European Union tax legislation. In other countries, local taxes may also apply. Depending on your chosen charter destination, our brokers will provide any prevalent rates.
