Western Michigan Iceboat Swap Meet Nov 3-4

by Deb Whitehorse | Oct 11, 2017 | 2017-2018 , Home Page , Uncategorized

grand traverse ice yacht club

This year the Gull Lake Ice Yacht Club (search Facebook:  Gull Lake Ice Yacht Club) will be combining with the Grand Traverse and West Michigan Ice Yacht Clubs in sponsoring and putting on the annual 2017-18 ice sailing season’s opener Swap Meet in Muskegon, MI.

If you are coming in from out of town we have made special arrangements with the Baymont Inn and Suites, (231) 798-0220, here in Muskegon on Friday evening for rooms with two (2) queen sized beds for $67.99 pus tax. When checking in tell them you are in town for the Western Michigan Iceboat Swap Meet.

This year’s event will be held at the Muskegon Yacht Club (MYC) located on the southwest end of Muskegon Lake. What has in the past been known and referred to as the Gull Lake Swap Meet held at the Gull Lake Country Club on Gull Lake is this year renaming itself as the “Western Michigan Iceboat Swap Meet”.

This year the event will begin on Friday evening, November 3rd with socializing and a presentation from Ron Sherry on his experiences during the 2017 Miami,FL to Havana, Cuba sailboat race last March. Ron was the helmsman aboard the smallest boat in the race, “Chico 2”, a 1D35 out of Detroit. The following is a quote from their navigator:

“Nearly every winning boat sailed a similar course to Dragon, staying close to the Florida reefs for relief from the swift-moving current of the Gulf Stream for as long as possible.   Despite sailing one of the lightest and smallest boats in the race, the Michigan crew aboard 35-foot Chico 2 finished fourth over the line and first in PHRF B Class thanks to strong crew work and near-flawless navigation.  “This is my first race to Havana, but I’ve run literally two months worth of navigational simulations of the race at home on the computer,” said Tom Anderson, Chico’s navigator.  “The real deal was quite a bit wetter, but thanks to the preparation, it was always familiar, and the answer was to avoid the deep water and push the boat hard along the reef.” (excerpted from Sailing Anarchy). This presentation should be interesting to anyone interested in sailing!

This presentation will be open to those “ice sailors” present on Friday evening, as well as any MYC “soft water sailors” who might be present at the club that evening. Everyone is welcome! For anyone planning on attending, we expect to start Ron’s presentation sometime around 7:00 pm in the “Spinnaker Room”. MYC’s kitchen will be open to any “ice sailors” on Friday evening in order to order from the open menu. Any alcohol, however, will need to be purchased via a MYC member, several of which are active members of the WMIYC.

There will be a luncheon buffet available at noon on Saturday included in the Swap Meet fee of $15.00 for which you will receive a “SINGLE” lunch ticket. For current WMIYC members, and any one else attending the meet who desires to become a new member of the WMIYC, in addition to lunch you will also receive a one (1) year membership to the WMIYC. Also included in the $15.00 fee you will receive one (1) “DOUBLE” ticket that you will use in bidding in the “Silent Auction” for some pretty nice gifts that will be available. Additional tickets for the “Silent Auction” will be available for purchase @ $1.00 ea. or six (6) for $5.00. You’ll likely want to either buy as many as you want, or more than you can afford, when you see what is being auctioned off! We will also be holding and selling tickets for a “50/50 Raffle” with the proceeds going to cover Swap Meet expenses. During, or after, lunch we have suggested to Ron that he be prepared to present a brief technical presentation on DN rig tuning and blade sharpening basics. Please put this on your calendar and plan to attend. If you are not an iceboater please ensure you take a look at the iceboats and related hardware that will be displayed/traded/sold on Saturday! It is a great way to extend your sailing season here in West Michigan! It is also typically a great opportunity to get into the sport with an older boat at a good price! Check us out!

Details Start: November 3 @ 6:00 pm End: November 4 @ 9:00 am Website: http://www.wmiyc.org , www.gulllakeiyc.org, www.gliyc.org

Glide Like the Wind: Iceboat Sailing

grand traverse ice yacht club

WRITER | MATT DAVIDSON PHOTO | BILL CUTTING

Iceboat sailing, also known as ice yacht sailing, has been a popular winter pastime for many who relish the feel of the wind taking hold of their sails and propelling them across the frozen surface of a lake at breakneck speeds.

The sport began in northern Europe in the late 1700s as something for all to enjoy during the long winter months. By the 18 th century, it had made the jump to the United States. Ice yacht sailing was all the rage along the frozen rivers and lakes of the Northeast, with the Hudson River serving as the sport’s main base of operations. The iceboats of this period were made of wood and their sails of canvas, and they were embraced by all economic groups. From the late 1800s to mid-1930s, however, the sport became more of a hobby for the very rich, with ice yachts reaching lengths of 70 feet and some as finely appointed as the stateliest rooms of the time.

Peter Sarelis, current member and former Commodore of the Gull Lake Ice Yacht Club , explained how modern ice yacht sailing has once again become a sport that anyone can enjoy.

“In the 1930s, the Detroit News held a contest seeking an affordable design for an iceboat that could be assembled from a kit by your average person in their backyard. This is how the DN Class of ice yacht came to be.” He went on to say, “The DN Class is highly portable, with a hull that is 12 feet long and a plank that is 8 feet wide. The 16-foot mast can be transported right on top of your vehicle; most minivans are capable of transporting a DN to your lake of choice.”

There are iceboating clubs spread across Michigan, and there are many different breeds of sailor within those clubs. Some enthusiasts have ice yachts made of high-tech alloys created through state-of-the-art manufacturing processes. These boats are capable of skimming across the ice at speeds in excess of 60 miles per hour. Others ply the frozen waters in rugged boats capable of plowing through snow drifts; these powerhouses obviously don’t require the mirror-like ice conditions that some others do.

Sarelis described the optimum conditions for iceboating. “You need at least 4, preferably 5 inches of hard clear ice with little to no snow cover for prime conditions on the course. With the amount of snowfall we receive, it often requires you to remain on standby, ready to go as the lakes become ready.”

Bill Cutting of the Grand Traverse Ice Yacht Club described ice yacht enthusiasts by saying, “We’re a wayward bunch of eclectic friends who chase optimum ice conditions wherever they may lead us. We spend a lot of time hanging out together on the ice in the cold, waiting for the right wind. It’s definitely a sport for hardy souls. You end up becoming good friends with such a diverse group of people from all walks of life.”

Cutting went on to say, “We welcome the public to come check us out and see what iceboating is all about. We have meetings beginning in October where we get together and discuss everything to do with the sport; most members love sharing what they know in hopes of attracting new participants. We also keep our Facebook page updated with planned upcoming events.”

Cutting described participants as nomadic when chasing the perfect ice conditions. “Different lakes have good ice at different times in the winter; we go where the ice is. In the Lower Peninsula, Houghton Lake, Lake Skegemog, and Birch Lake are some of the early ones to hit before heavy snow makes conditions less than stellar. Club members travel all over the state and northern Midwest, with Government Bay, St. Martin Bay, and Munuscong Bay in the Upper Peninsula often drawing groups of iceboaters.”

Each year, enthusiasts from across the state and the world get together for a yearly regatta, which is a mix between highly competitive racing and the friendly atmosphere of a family reunion. Last year’s event was held on Lake Charlevoix; this year’s venue is yet to be decided. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend. To learn more about the sport, contact your local ice yacht club or check out their Facebook page.

Congratulations to all the winners this weekend at the Grand Traverse Invite, from left to right - Scot Zimmerman (3rd), Fred Rozelle (2nd), ‘King of the North’ Mike Dow (1st), Kent Sisk (5th) and Steve Pirie (4th - not pictured). Nationals here we come!

This past weekend the Grand Traverse Yacht Club, in Traverse City, Michigan, was pleased to once again host the Melges 24 Class at its long standing Invitational Regatta. Participation was strong with 21 boats on the starting line Saturday morning. Four races were held the first day in a southerly 10-15 knot breeze with smooth water. Clear blue skies and high 80 degree temperatures rounded out the sailing conditions.  After the first day of racing, Mike Dow on USA 613 Flying Toaster lead the pack with Scot Zimmerman racing USA 717 Bad Idea in second, and Steve Pirie’s Rumbunctious USA 744 and Fred Rozelle on USA 510 Rustler tied for third.

Sunday delivered wind from the North at 12-17 knots with choppy seas.  Clear skies again, with 70 degree temperatures on the water made conditions excellent for completing an additional four races.  After eight races and no throw outs, Mike Dow and the Flying Toaster team took the Regatta, with Rustler and Bad Idea following in second and third, respectively.  For full race results please follow the link below. This event provided teams with three scoring opportunities, the regatta, stop number seven on the National Ranking Series, and stop number two on the Quantum M24 Great Lakes Cup.  Please see the below links for up to date standings in both series.

The Midwest fleet looks forward to competing with the rest of the Class at U.S. Nationals September 17-19, at Crescent Sail Yacht Club in Gross Pointe Farms, Michigan.  Registration link is below.
