Alye Parusa - Scarlet Sails

One of the most emblematic events of the city, Alye Parusa ("The Scarlet Sails") is a St. Petersburg tradition which, with some interruptions, has been repeated since the Fifties at the end of every scholastic year.

It is a celebration for students graduating high school, but it is not just school leavers who enjoy the festivities, with hundreds of thousands of revelers of all ages gathering along the embankments of the Neva River to enjoy the spectacle, and continuing the street party into the early hours of the next morning. On the night of 25 June this year, the Swedish brig Tre Kronor will don full scarlet rig and sail along the Neva, accompanied by a grand fireworks display and a host of other entertainments.

The ship with scarlet sails is drawn from a tale by Soviet fantasy author Alexander Grin about a young girl with modest prospects for life who lives in a sleepy fishing village but dreams of seeing the world. One day she is told by a wizard that a ship with red sails will come and take her away; on recounting this prophesy to the people around her, she is scorned and ostracized, but she continues to believe the old man's words. One day, a nobleman's son and merchant ship captain passing through the village, sees her from a distance and falls in love with her; upon inquiring about her with the locals, he hears of her tale, and decides to make it come true, so as to get her to sail away with him.

Thus the ship with scarlet sails floating along the Neva each year represents an allegoric encouragement to young people to believe in their dreams. For most school leavers, however, the symbolism of the event is less important than the opportunity to celebrate their liberation from school rules and restrictions and their entry into adult life. Alongside the central spectacle of a red-rigged tall ship navigating the Neva with accompanying fireworks, the festivities also include a range of free musical and theatrical performances on open-air stages on Palace Square and Nevsky Prospekt, as well as general revelry throughout the area that can go on well in to the next morning. In recent years, estimates for crowd size have regularly topped a million, making Alye Parusa second only to the New Year in terms of public celebrations in St. Petersburg. Consumption of alcohol is also a key element of the party, so expect a fairly rowdy atmosphere, especially as the night progresses.

The theme of this year's performances will revolve around bridges, one of the most important symbols of St. Petersburg.

Given that Alye Parusa is a party night for high school students, the revelries can get a little out of hand, and the crowds are always massive along the Neva embankments; it is therefore advisable to avoid Palace Square and the areas around it, especially further into the night, and instead to watch the ship and fireworks from a safe vantage point, preferably in the comfort of a cafe or restaurant or, best of all, from a private boat on the Neva River.

Where to watch

The Neva Embankment near Palace Square and Troitsky Bridge, as well as the tip of Vasilievsky Island, will certainly be crowded, so it is best to arrive there early to get a good spot. Other good vantage points are the beach in front of the Peter and Paul Fortress, the Hermitage Bridge, and the Birzhevoy Bridge. If, however, you would prefer to avoid jostling through crowds, there are a few restaurants with a good view on the water:

Woman identified after body found in Quinnipiac River in New Haven

NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) - Detectives have identified the woman that was found in the Quinnipiac River in New Haven.

Police said the dead female was found near James Street and River Street along the embankment on Monday morning.

NHPD is on scene with a deceased female who was found in the Quinnipiac River in the area of the Ferry Street bridge. — New Haven Police Department (@NHPDnews) September 10, 2024

Detectives were able to identify the woman as Shannon Arrington, 37, of New Haven and her family has been notified.

Members of the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner responded to the scene to conduct an investigation.

They removed the body for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Police ask that anyone who may have witnessed this incident to call detectives at 203-946-6304.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Police in New Haven found the body of a woman in the Quinnipiac River Tuesday morning, prompting what they described as a "sudden death" investigation.

At 7:50 a.m., officers received a call about a body floating in the water of the river near Brewery Square, police said. 

Authorities say the New Haven Fire Department water rescue team arrived to the area and found the body near James Street and River Streets along the embankment.

The woman was identified by detectives as Shannon Arrington, 37, of New Haven.

The Officer of the Chief Medical Examiner was called to the scene for a preliminary investigation and is conducting an autopsy to determine a cause of death, according to police.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked by police to contact detectives at 203-946-6304 or the New Haven Police Department anonymous tip-line at 866-888-TIPS (8477).

71-year-old man pulled from Colorado River was 16th Grand Canyon death this year

A 71-year-old man was found dead in the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon on Tuesday after he disappeared the night before, according to the National Park Service.

On Monday at about 9:15 p.m., authorities received a report about a missing boater near a campsite about 53.5 miles downriver from Lee's Ferry, according to a National Park Service news release.

On Tuesday morning, a body was found about 10 miles farther down the river from where the man was reported missing, the news release said.

The death was being investigated by the National Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner, according to the news release.

The death marked the 16th this year — and the second this month — at the Grand Canyon.

Man's 'Horrific' Stabbing Attack On Ex-GF In Front Of Children In Bay Shore Nets 15 Years

A Long Island man will spend over a decade in prison for brutally stabbing his ex-girlfriend in front of their horrified children.

Jorge Guevara, age 49, of Bay Shore, was sentenced to 15 years behind bars in Suffolk County Court on Wednesday, Sept. 4, after a jury convicted him of attempted assault and related charges.

According to prosecutors, Guevara and the victim got into an argument on March 28, 2023, and he threatened her with a knife. 

The two struggled over the weapon before Guevara grabbed a pair of scissors and stabbed the woman in her neck and shoulder repeatedly.

The couple’s three children were present during the attack, prosecutors said.

After stabbing the woman, Guevara refused to let her or the kids call 911. When a neighbor came over after hearing her screams, Guevara prevented her from calling for help.

The neighbor eventually escaped through a bedroom window and called 911.

Prosecutors said the victim suffered a deep laceration to her neck and underwent emergency surgery at South Shore University Hospital.

On Wednesday, June 19, a Suffolk County jury found Guevara guilty of attempted assault, menacing, and four counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

“This case represents a horrific act of domestic violence that will leave lasting scars on all involved. We cannot begin to fathom the terror those children experienced, or the betrayal and pain the victim suffered at the hands of someone who should have been her protector,” said Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney.

“Our community will not stand for such brutality. This office remains steadfast in our commitment to pursuing justice for victims of domestic violence and working to break the cycle of abuse. 

"We hope this outcome aids the family as they begin their journey of healing and recovery.”

SRTA buses are free thanks to the 'millionaire's tax.' What else is it paying for?

The free ride is rolling on, as Southeastern Regional Transit Authority will collect no bus fares for another year — the service is being paid for by the state “millionaire’s tax.”  

From now until June 30, 2025, hopping onto a SRTA bus anywhere in Fall River and New Bedford, or even traveling between the two, is free at the point of service. That includes its on-demand van service for the disabled . 

SRTA has experimented with free bus service for shorter periods before , as part of its “Try Transit” program. Already free since Jan. 1, another state grant extends free service until the end of fiscal 2025. 

How is the bus service paid for? How do you use it? And what else has the state millionaire's tax bought?

Who is paying for this free SRTA bus service? 

Those with high incomes. In 2022, voters approved a state constitutional amendment that levies a 4% surtax on personal taxable income above $1 million. The money must be used exclusively for education and transportation. 

The state’s fiscal 2025 budget requires that “not less than $30 million shall be expended on grants for the regional transit authorities to implement year-round systemwide fare-free service,” with all of that coming from the Education and Transportation Fund.  

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation distributes the grant money.

Did the millionaire’s tax really generate enough to pay for free buses for a year? 

Yes. In fiscal 2024, the tax pulled in $1.8 billion to the state's Education and Transportation Fund, more than the $1.3 billion expected by the House Committee on Ways and Means. 

What else is the Fair Share Amendment paying for? 

Among many other line items, these are in the 2025 state budget, paid for through the Education and Transportation Fund: 

• Free breakfast and lunch at public schools:  $170 million from the fund was set aside "for the reimbursement of school districts and participating schools for the costs of providing universal free school meals.” 
• Free universal community college: $93.5 million is being spent to offer tuition-free education at all 15 of the state’s community colleges for students who have not previously earned a college degree. 
• More pre-K: $5 million is being spent to expand pre-kindergarten, with preference "given to districts serving high percentages of high-needs students.” 
• Cheaper MBTA fares: $20 million is set aside to pay for a program that reduces fares “for riders of all modes with low-incomes.” That includes the commuter rail, when service begins in Fall River and New Bedford.
• Road improvements: $45 million is being set aside to pay "for the construction and reconstruction of municipal ways.” 

Where does SRTA bus service run?  

SRTA has 10 routes in Fall River , another 10 in New Bedford , and an intercity bus connecting the two cities with stops along the way.  

It also runs an on-demand transport service for disabled people that can be used in Fall River, New Bedford, Acushnet, Dartmouth, Fairhaven, Freetown, Mattapoisett, Somerset, Swansea and Westport.   

How do I know where to pick up a SRTA bus?  

The SRTA website features maps of all its routes, including interactive Google Maps. SRTA’s Bustracker app for iPhone and Android can also display all the routes with real-time tracking information — it makes it easy to find the next available bus. 

How does the on-demand service work?  

The demand-response service is for use by disabled riders — to be eligible for it, obtain an application on SRTA’s website, fill it out, and have a doctor sign it. Rides can be booked up to seven days ahead of time. The service is available from 5:20 a.m. to 10:10 p.m. weekdays, from 6:10 a.m. to 8:05 p.m. on Saturdays and holidays, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.

Driver charged in deadly wrong-way crash on Hutchinson River Parkway in Rye Brook

RYE BROOK, New York (WABC) -- Police in Westchester County are investigating a deadly crash caused by a wrong-way driver on the Hutchinson River Parkway in Rye Brook.

Jose Espinal, 48, of Bridgeport, is accused of being intoxicated when he drove his Toyota Highlander southbound in the northbound lanes just after 5 a.m. Sunday.

Officials say he crashed head-on into a Toyota Camry that was traveling north, killing its driver and causing the Camry to catch fire.

The identity of that driver has not yet been released.

Espinal was removed from his car and taken by ambulance to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. He has been charged with Vehicle Manslaughter 2nd Degree and Driving While Intoxicated.

The suspect sat with his head down and appeared on the verge of tears during a court hearing on Monday morning.

The judge remanded Espinal who will head back to the county jail in Valhalla ahead of a felony hearing Friday morning in Port Chester.

The full circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.
