The Whitsundays

From pristine secluded beaches and vibrant marine life to verdant bushland, sailing the Whitsundays is an unforgettable Superyacht experience. Located at the heart of Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef, this lush tropical archipelago juts proudly from clear, turquoise waters, bordered by spectacular reefs and pure white sands. Surrounded by untouched natural landscapes, you can leave the worries of the world behind and treat every day like a lazy Sunday.

The Whitsundays truly have something for everyone. For those who enjoy a bit of bustle, Hamilton Island is brimming with attractions and activities. Indulge in fine dining and boutique shopping, play golf and tennis, explore the island in a golf buggy, or visit Hamilton Island Wildlife to cuddle a koala. Then, retire to the luxury Qualia Resort , Beach Club , or palm-shaded bungalows and enjoy sensational views across the Whitsundays.

If you’re looking for a more tranquil holiday, Hayman Island is Australia’s most celebrated private island destination. Located on the southern shore, the 5-star InterContinental Hayman Island Resort sits amidst 14 hectares of tropical gardens, filled with cockatoos, lorikeets, kingfishers, and kookaburras.

About 90km from Hamilton Island, Heart Reef is an extraordinary natural coral formation and sparkling lagoon in the shape of a perfect heart. Take a helicopter or seaplane flight for an unforgettable view of this iconic attraction. For a truly exclusive experience, land on the Heart Island pontoon’s floating helipad and indulge in champagne and canapés as you explore the reef in a glass-bottomed boat. Return to Heart Island for an undercover swim or snorkel from the back of the pontoon in the astonishingly clear lagoon. Later, head to Reefworld and enjoy your Reefsleep, a once-in-a-lifetime chance to sleep under the stars in the midst of the Great Barrier Reef.

A range of exceptional dive and snorkelling sites let ocean lovers get up close and personal with some of the richest marine life in the world. This stunning aquatic playground is home to 1,500 species of fish, 360 species of coral, and 7,000 species of molluscs, as well as reef sharks, dugongs, marine turtles, manta rays, moray eels, and so much more! For beginners, Manta Ray Bay and Gary’s Lagoon are a fantastic place to start your diving experience. More seasoned divers can explore the Stepping Stones: a series of flat-topped coral pinnacles divided by a labyrinth of winding channels and caves. Snorkellers will love Hardy Reef, where the friendly giant Maori wrasse and batfish often come for a feed.

Maori Wrasse best snorkelling whitsundays dive great barrier reef

If you’d prefer to stay dry, visit the observatory at Hook Island and descend nine metres below the waves to view the dazzling coral, reef animals, and plants. Then, hike the trail at Nara Inlet and become immersed in the oldest living culture in the world. The Whitsundays have been Ngaro country for more than 8,000 years and the Islands are dotted with archaeological sites that tell the stories of this seafaring people. Nara Inlet is home to Indigenous rock art nearly 9,000 years old!

Whitehaven Beach is the jewel of the Whitsundays and one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. The pure basilica sand along the scimitar-shaped coastline of Whitsunday Island is always cool, so you can walk comfortably with the sand between your toes for its entire 7km stretch.

Make sure you save time to visit Hill Inlet, an iconic cove at the northern tip of Whitsunday Island, where the sand and sea swirl together in captivating patterns, like an abstract watercolour painting. On your way back to civilisation, visit the birds of Dumbell Island, and feed sea eagles from the aft deck.

Day One – Hamilton Island & Whitehaven Beach Fly over the magnificent Whitsunday Archipelago and land at your island destination. Make your way by golf buggy to the awaiting Motor Yacht ONEWORLD as her Captain and Crew greet you and eagerly await to whisk you away on your luxury yachting holiday! Welcomed on board with champagne, canapés and cold towels let the Chief Stewardess show you to your rooms and make yourself at home as ONEWORLD cruises to her first anchorage. Introducing Whitehaven Beach, located at the southern end of the largest of the islands in the group, Whitsunday Island. Whitehaven Beach at 7km long is the largest beach made from 97% pure Sicilia sand. In the galley the first of many meals is being lovingly crafted especially for you so join us on the aft deck for the culinary journey to begin. The afternoon is yours take a walk on Whitehaven or perhaps relax in the sun with a cocktail in hand, sunscreen is a must! Return to the yacht for a shower to freshen up join us at the bar for sunset canapés and cocktails. Enjoy yet another beautifully prepared three course meal by the amazing on-board chef, Clancy. The only thing better than his cooking is the view. Captain Matt joins you in the saloon to welcome you on board and go through the itinerary for the next few days.

Day Two – Whitehaven Beach, Hill Inlet & Luncheon Bay Wake early (or late) and slowly stumble to the aft deck where a beautiful buffet breakfast awaits. Fresh juices, hot coffee and eggs just the way you like them. It’s time to change into those swimmers and take advantage of the relatively empty beach before the day trippers arrive. There are two ways to see the Whitsundays – by sea and by sky. As your seaplane arrives make sure those cameras and phones are charged these sights are not to be missed. Upon your return with heads high in the sky, enjoy a true Aussie style BBQ lunch. After lunch ONEWORLD ups her anchor and cruises ever so slightly north to Tongue Bay where a quick hike will take you to the most stunning view of Whitehaven Beach, cameras are essential! It’s been an action-packed day which means appetites must be catered for. Sunset Cocktails and canapés are provided, and the hot tub is roaring ready for a more relaxing part of the day. Sit back and relax as we venture even further north to our next anchorage for dinner. Luncheon Bay, situated at the most northern end of Hook Island makes for a perfect dining location. A delicious meal is prepared and served on the aft deck accompanied by handpicked Australian wines. Captain Matt joins you again to discuss the following days plans as if the weather permits its ‘See ya later land and Hello Bait Reef Lagoon!’

Day Three – Bait Reef Lagoon, Outer Great Barrier Reef & Stonehaven Bay Hear the sound of the engines humming along and its 4am? Don’t worry you’re not dreaming, ONEWORLD is making her way to the Outer Great Barrier Reef to Bait Reef Lagoon for a day of snorkelling swimming and sun and no land in sight. Enjoy the delicious breakfast spread once ONEWORLD safely takes up mooring amongst the large coral bommies and reefs. The Stepping Stones are a unique feature of Bait Reef. They are made up of 18 or more flat- topped coral pinnacles lined up in a row. At the Southern Face shallow waters are dominated by flat terrain completely covered by hard corals with the odd sand patch. Large turtles, manta rays and some pelagic fishes such as mackerel and barracuda are often seen cruising along the drop-off. Lunch on board followed by more snorkelling and relaxing until late afternoon where it’s time to make our way back towards the mainland. If weather permits, spend a very special night on the reef or motor back to the mainland where the protection of Cid Harbour awaits.

Day Four – Cid Harbour & Hamilton Island The final morning is upon us and it’s time to say goodbye but not before one last buffet breakfast surrounded by the beautiful scenery that is Hook Island. If you’re an early bird the Whitsunday Peak is a must do hike. 2 hours return it’s not for the faint heated but rest assured the views from the top are to die for. Mid-morning ONEWORLD anchors up for the final time and heads south along the eastern side of Whitsunday Island towards Hamilton Island. Safety back in the berth ONEWORLD’s crew bid adieu with memories that will last a life time, and hope to see you again soon!

We had the best day despite the weather. Captain Scotty was a legend and took the kids out tubing for hours! They had so much fun with him!! If it wasn’t for his high energy for the water sports, it could have been a pretty average day for the charter - he’s really such an asset to NISI!

Hamilton Island Race Week – All Styles and Sizes

Day four of racing started in style this morning with the annual Hamilton Island Race Week Prix d’Elegance. Sailors smartened up their uniforms or used their creativity to parade and compete for two different prizes, ‘Best Presented’, or ‘Best Themed’, with winners set to be announced this Saturday at the prizegiving.

As Hamilton Island Race Week moves into the final few days, the breadth of the fleet has to be celebrated. From 100ft Maxis down to 20ft-something Sonatas. Friends Hugh Alexander and Greg Goodall are part of a group of Trailable Division sailors who have travelled by road and sea to take part in the 39th Edition.

“We drove our boats up from Victoria, we’ve got three trailer yachts that came up from Bendigo, another two from South Australia and one from Melbourne” explained Alexander.

“We drove up to Mackay, launched from there and did a hop through the southern Whitsunday Islands before coming up here for Hamilton Island Race Week”.

The journey was a dream that started in COVID but got postponed until 2022, when they were finally able to make the trip, this is actually the second time around for the group of Sonata sailors.

“This year we decided we would try and do it again after we had such a great time last time and from here we will probably go and cruise the islands around Hamilton,” said Goodall.

“I’ve done six Hamilton Island’s, but on a Trailable, it’s like flying a small plane compared to getting on a jumbo jet,” he explained. “You get to see lots of big boats but you don’t need one to join in”, said Goodall.

“I would definitely encourage people to come and do Hamilton Island Race Week, it’s a great event and the highlight of our month of cruising”.

Alexander and Goodall are keen to show that any size yacht can get involved in Hamilton Island Race Week, their own group’s boats ranging from a Sonata 7, a Southern Cross 23, three Sonata 6’s and a Ross 780.

“We’ve got plenty of boats out there in the Trailable division from 22 ft up to 30 ft. They are small, especially compared to boats like Wild Oats X and Wild Thing 100,” explained Goodall.

“It’s pretty scary but also awesome to watch them come past, it really is, and you think maybe one day we might get to also be on one of those, just for a go,” finished Alexander.

In addition to building tradewinds, strong tides have tested both sailors and race organisers. Despite these challenges, the organisers have excelled in ensuring that every division has the best possible day on the water.

Rating Divisions 1, 2 and 3 completed two short courses today on the Eastern Passage course area. In IRC Rating Division 1, Alive, skippered by Duncan Hine, continued their winning streak taking both races to move into the top spot overall.

In IRC Rating Division 2 Hooligan, skippered by Marcus Blackmore held onto victory in race four, with Matador, skippered by David Doherty,  falling just one second behind them on IRC. Matador struck back in race five, taking the win from Hooligan to hold on to their overall lead. Zen, skippered by Gordon Ketelbey, continued their consistent regatta with two third places for the day.

Ikon, skippered by Bruce McCraken, also built on their pre-lay-day win with two bullets for the day, putting them four points clear at the top of the Rating Division 3 table. Behind them Garth Riley’s Wazza Red Boat, Ian Box’s ToyBox2 and Joel Skelton’s Nocleks continued to trade places and remain in contention for the minor placings on IRC.

In the Super 40 division, Team Hollywood, skippered by Ray Roberts, continued their perfect scorecard for the regatta, taking the line and IRC win and a clear lead at the top of the IRC table for the Super 40 division. Billy Leonard’s Secret Weapon took second place, moving them to third place on IRC.

The Cape 31’s sub-division within the Super 40’s continues to be led by Kukukerchu skippered by David Ross, who today lost out on a hatrick by 24 seconds to winner Game On 31, skippered by Julian Newton. The Cape 31 class are also contesting their Australian Championships at Hamilton Island Race Week, bringing an added intensity to the one-design racing.

Storm Bay, skippered by Marc Gerard, shook up the leaderboard and took first place overall in the Hamilton Island Multihull Black Division after placing third in today’s race behind Wendy Bleckman’s Alba Dash and Craig Molloy’s Avalanche.

Mick Hodgins’ Tao had another great day out on the water, winning in the Hamilton Island Multihull White Division to hold the top spot overall.

Gin and Tonic skippered by Mitch White continues to hold the lead in the Hamilton Island Blue Division. However, in a spectacular rise up the leaderboard Brian Pozzey’s Green Beacon White Swan have managed to win their first race of the regatta. Having had a tough first half of the week not quite being able to beat out the strong competition they won the race today by an impressive 13 minutes on corrected time.

Hamilton Island Fluro Yellow Division saw a new yacht take first place on the overall leaderboard, Carla M, skippered by Mark Michalowsky, who came third in their race today.

Gary Davison’s Solaire had a great win today which saw them jump into first place on the overall Hamilton Island Orange Division leaderboard.

Hamilton Island Pink had another change on their leaderboard with Charm Offensive, skippered by Tim Lewis, sliding into first place after coming second in today’s race behind Wayne Arnold Seaward’s Cyan Moon.

Despite not having their best day out on the course Tom Vujasinovic’s Masquerade continues to stay in first place in the Trailable Yachts Division. It was a similar story for the Non-Spinnaker Division winner Bigger Day Out, skippered by Remco Pen, who while not finishing inside the top ten today have still done enough over the course of the week to hold onto first place overall.

Hamilton Island Race Week - All Styles and Sizes

22 August 2024

superyacht hamilton island

“We drove our boats up from Victoria, we've got three trailer yachts that came up from Bendigo, another two from South Australia and one from Melbourne” explained Alexander. “I’ve done six Hamilton Island’s, but on a Trailable, it's like flying a small plane compared to getting on a jumbo jet,” he explained. “You get to see lots of big boats but you don’t need one to join in”, said Goodall. “I would definitely encourage people to come and do Hamilton Island Race Week, it's a great event and the highlight of our month of cruising”. Alexander and Goodall are keen to show that any size yacht can get involved in Hamilton Island Race Week, their own group’s boats ranging from a Sonata 7, a Southern Cross 23, three Sonata 6’s and a Ross 780.  “We've got plenty of boats out there in the Trailable division from 22 ft up to 30 ft. They are small, especially compared to boats like Wild Oats X and Wild Thing 100,” explained Goodall.  “It's pretty scary but also awesome to watch them come past, it really is, and you think maybe one day we might get to also be on one of those, just for a go,” finished Alexander.  In addition to building tradewinds, strong tides have tested both sailors and race organisers. This superyacht hot spot for the uber-wealthy is heating up — and becoming more dangerous

The storm that sank the “Bayesian,” a luxury yacht anchored off the Sicily coast, was sudden, violent and deadly — and scientists say it may be a warning of what’s to come as global warming fuels more extreme weather in the Mediterranean.

The superyacht, which was carrying 22 people, sank in the early hours of Monday morning, near the port of Porticello, claiming at least five lives . Rescue operations are still ongoing, hampered by the difficulties of reaching the vessel, which is resting on the sea floor approximately 165 feet deep.

The incident has shocked many. The Mediterranean, prized for its crystal clear, tranquil waters, is a prime summer destination for the very wealthy and their superyachts.

But these waters can still be dangerous — one of the reasons thousands of people die every year trying to migrate across it — and experts say it’s only becoming more so as human-caused climate change warms the sea, whipping up stronger and more intense storms.

The reasons for the sinking of the Bayesian are still being investigated. “It was dark and no images are available,” said Luca Mercalli, president of the Italian Meteorological Society.

But many believe the yacht was struck by a waterspout — one of several types of tornadoes. The coast guard reported the yacht was struck by a tornado, and a waterspout was reported to the European Severe Weather Database around the same time. Storms that day resulted in at least two dozen waterspout reports across Italy.

Waterspouts are narrow spinning columns of air below a thunderstorm which happen over water, and thrive on heat and humidity.

Most waterspouts are fairly weak “with a few seconds of strong, gusty winds before they move on or dissipate,” said Peter Inness, a meteorologist at the University of Reading. “But some can be much stronger.”

There aren’t huge amounts of data about waterspouts as they often happen unobserved out at sea, but there is evidence ocean temperatures can affect them. A study by University of Barcelona scientists, which was focused on Spain’s Balearic Islands, found waterspouts are more likely when the ocean is very warm.

However, drawing a link between climate change and more frequent or more intense waterspouts “is a step too far at the moment,” Inness said. They require several different conditions to form in addition to heat, including winds and temperature differences between the air and sea.

What is clear however, is that climate change is leading to more intense storms, some of which are fueled by warm ocean water.

And the Mediterranean is currently very, very hot.

Water temperatures around Sicily are approximately 30 degrees, Mercalli said. That’s 3 degrees Celsius (5.4 Fahrenheit) warmer than average for this time of year — an “extreme” anomaly, he told CNN.

While ocean heat is affected by natural climate fluctuations, such as El Niño, scientists are clear that it is being supercharged by human-caused global warming driven by burning fossil fuels.

When oceans are hot, they are able to inject more energy into the atmosphere. This can be converted into strong winds or rapid updrafts of air in thunderstorms, Inness said. Warm air is also able to hold more moisture, so when storms produce rain, it can be heavier and more intense.

There has been an increase in heavy thunderstorms dumping large amounts of rain, as well as downbursts — strong winds that descend from thunderstorms — in Italy and worldwide over the past few decades, Mercalli said.

The storm that hit Sicily reached the Mediterranean from the west, where it gained energy from high ocean temperatures, said Justino Martínez, a researcher at the Institute of Marine Scientists in Spain.

Spain’s Balearic Islands were particularly affected. Torrential rain last week flooded roads, forced evacuations and flight cancellations and overturned yachts moored on the popular island of Formentera.

The storm then gained more energy before reaching Italy, Martínez told CNN. In addition to the waterspout, other strong storms across Sicily brought torrential rainfall late Sunday, dumping more than 100 mm of rainfall, or 4 inches, in Brolo in less than four hours.

The Mediterranean region is on the frontlines of the climate crisis. Dubbed a climate change hot spot , it’s warming around 20% faster than the global average. And the toll is clear in the extreme weather the region is experiencing, from brutal rolling heat waves to ferocious storms bringing catastrophic flooding .

“Global warming — and specifically warming of the Mediterranean Sea — is quite likely to lead to an intensification of a number of potentially dangerous weather systems in that region,” Inness said.

Italy, surrounded by the fast-warming waters of the Mediterranean, is particularly affected. Last year, a downburst hit a ship on Lake Maggiore in northern Italy, killing four people.

The country also grappled with “ once in a century” deadly floods that killed at least 14 people in May last year, while Sicily hit 48.8 degrees Celsius (119.8 Fahrenheit) last August, breaking Europe’s temperature record.

Outside Italy, last year’s Storm Daniel, fueled by unusually warm ocean waters , claimed lives in Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria. But by far the most devastation from the storm happened in Libya.

Flash flooding killed thousands of people following a so-called medicane — a rare, hurricane-like cyclone in the Mediterranean that gains energy from warm water.

“Global warming is intensifying all extreme weather events,” Mercalli said, “with huge costs for people and society.”

Global Affairs says Canadian reported dead after yacht capsized off Sicily

Global Affairs Canada said Monday it’s aware of reports that a Canadian has died after a luxury superyacht sank off Sicily during a violent storm, while Italian authorities said they continued to search for six people who remained unaccounted for.

In a statement Monday afternoon, Global Affairs said consular officials were in contact with local authorities, but said it could provide no further information due to privacy concerns.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to everyone affected by this tragic event,” the agency said.

British tech magnate Mike Lynch was among the people who remain unaccounted for after their chartered sailboat sank off Porticello, when a tornado over the water known as a waterspout struck the area overnight, said Salvo Cocina of Sicily’s civil protection agency.

His wife, Angela Bacares, and 14 other people survived.

One body had been recovered, and police divers were trying to reach the hull of the ship, which was resting at a depth of 50 meters off Porticello, near Palermo, where it had been anchored, rescue authorities said. They returned to the site after 10 p.m. to see if it would be possible to search through the night, when weather conditions were expected to worsen, said Luca Cari, a spokesman of the fire rescue service.

The ship had a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers, the Italian coast guard said. A sudden fierce storm had battered the area overnight, and struck the place precisely where the 56-meter British-flagged Bayesian had been moored.

“They were in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Cocina, noting that another big ship nearby, the Sir Robert Baden Powell, wasn’t as badly damaged and helped rescue the 15 survivors — including Lynch’s wife.

The Bayesian was notable for its single 75-meter mast — one of the world’s tallest made of aluminum and which was lit up at night, just hours before it sank.

One of the survivors, identified as Charlotte Golunski, said she momentarily lost hold of her one-year-old daughter Sofia in the water, but then managed to hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, Italian news agency ANSA reported, quoting the mother. The father, James Emslie, also survived, said Cocina.

Karsten Borner, the captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, said he had noticed the Bayesian nearby during the storm but after it calmed he saw a red flare and realized the ship had simply disappeared, ANSA and the Giornale di Sicilia newspaper reported. Borner said he and a crew member boarded their tender and found a lifeboat with 15 people, some of them injured, who they then took aboard and alerted the coast guard.

Eight of those rescued were hospitalized while the others were taken to a hotel. One body believed to be the cook was found near the wreck, but six others were unaccounted for and believed inside the hull, said Cari, the fire rescue spokesperson. The rescue operations, which were visible from shore, involved helicopters and rescue boats from the coast guard, fire rescue and civil protection service.

Fisherman Fabio Cefalù said he had seen a flare from shore at around 4:30 a.m. and immediately set out to the site but by the time he got there, the Bayesian had already sunk, with only cushions, wood and other items from the superyacht floating in the water.

“But for the rest, we didn’t find anyone,” he said from the port hours later. He said that he immediately alerted the coast guard and stayed on site for three hours, but didn’t find any survivors. “I think they are inside, all the missing people.”

He said he had been up early to check the weather to see if he could go fishing, and surmised that a sudden waterspout had struck the yacht.

“It could be that the mast broke, or the anchor at the prow pulled it, I don’t know,” he said.

Cocina said the crew and passengers hailed from a variety of countries. In addition to Britain and the United States, passengers and crew were from Antigua, France, Germany, Ireland, Myanmar, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Spain, he said.

The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch is deploying a team of four inspectors to Italy to conduct a preliminary assessment. The Foreign Commonwealth and Development office said it was “providing consular support to a number of British nationals and their families.”

Dutch foreign ministry spokesperson Casper Soetekouw said the lone Dutch citizen on board, a man, had been rescued and was not in life-threatening condition.

Lynch, once hailed as Britain’s king of technology, was cleared in June of fraud and conspiracy charges related to Hewlett Packard’s $11 billion takeover of his company, Autonomy Corp.

The acquittal vindicated Lynch, who had vehemently denied wrong doing and portrayed HP as a technological train wreck.

“I’m looking forward to returning the UK and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field,” Lynch said in a statement released after the verdict.

The yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, can accommodate 12 passengers in four double cabins, a triple and the master suite, plus crew accommodations, according to Charter World and Yacht Charters.
