We will foster and promote the sport of sailing by conducting sailboat racing, on -the-water sailing activities and social activities among members of the club and mutually interested organizations. We will uphold the principles of good sportsmanship and the Corinthian spirit of sailing.

Our members include individuals and families who love to sail on our beautiful Whiskeytown Lake. Our extended family includes many sailors who have been coming to our Annual Regatta for many years and includes many generations of sailors.

Description

Yacht Club is essentially a blended scotch whisky made up of about 40% malt whisky and 60% grain whisky.  Not the worst ratio in the world as there are many much bigger brands out there that use much less malt whisky with more grain.  Where Yacht Club reaches out beyond the norm is by ensuring that the grain elements are at least 5 years old while the malt whisky portion is just a fraction over the legal requirement of 3 years.

There’s no whistles and bells here.  It is what it is.  It’s a decent value scotch whisky.  There are some decent drinkable bottles out there where, without the massive marketing and advertising budgets to fund, more attention can be given to the quality of the spirts used to make the product.  This is definitely one of them.

It’s bottled and packaged in France (blended scotch whisky CAN be exported from Scotland and bottled in other countries – only single malt has to be bottled in Scotland) and it’s exported to most of Eastern Europe, the Balkans and Russia.  It typically sells for a few pennies shy of €12 euros a bottle, and we have it about 15% cheaper than that.  It comes with a box, so it’s a pocket-friendly gift for the people you don’t want to spend too much on.

Tasting Notes

We could list off a wonderful story about the nose and the palate and the finish but that would be all pretentious and churlish.  The facts are at this price, most of you would mix it anyway.  It is drinkable with ice.  Not quite as dry as a typical big brand scotch.  Some fruity notes in there.  What matters is that it’s smooth, doesn’t rip your throat off and it doesn’t give you a vile hangover the next day (unlike most cheap booze that ends up in China).

Whisky Jesus crucified a bottle of this over two days (drink responsibly people…..a bottle in a day would be stupid!) and he was still in the office both days after, bright and early, before 8am, lecturing us about our sinful ways when he found out we’d spanked a bottle of prosecco.

Maiden Voyage (New Jersey Bourbon & Yacht Club Single Barrel) Review

The New Jersey Bourbon and Yacht Club was approached with an opportunity to buy an entire barrel of 6 year-old MGP bourbon in the middle of 2020.  During this process, they got to design the label and choose the bottle type to be used for their very own private bottling.  The label was made by the group’s resident artist, Dan (@oakandtime) who has been involved in all of the stickers for previous single barrels that they’ve picked.  Since this was a private bottling, this is the actual label and not a sticker on the back of the bottle.

Purchased through Hudson Wine Market in New York, this single barrel of bourbon uses MGP’s high-rye mashbill. It was not filtered and was bottled at cask strength (which ended up being 120.2 proof).

The New Jersey Bourbon and Yacht Club christened it “Maiden Voyage.” This fits in with their other single barrel picks that all share a nautical theme. But you’re here because you want to know what this 6 year old bourbon tastes like, right? Let’s dive in. I sampled this neat in a Glencairn .

Tasting Notes

Nose : The high-rye nature of the mashbill is out in full force on the nose . Notes of cinnamon stick and peppery rye spice let you know there’s going to be some kick. Also, for just six years old, the charred oak scent is quite developed. There are some fun fruit scents such as cherry blossoms and Hi-C fruit punch. I even find a slight hint of cocoa powder which is a fun trait that’s a little off-profile.

Palate: The first sip comes off as very fruit-forward with notes of cherry Twizzlers and citrus peel. I typically get a lot of fruit with high-rye mashbills and this is no exception. Typical MGP flavors of oak, brown sugar and cinnamon are all present and nicely developed while spices like nutmeg and clove add depth. There’s even some mint that gives away the rye in the mashbill.

Finish: After the sip is over, fruit notes of citrus and cherries still remain on your tongue. The tannins aren’t as developed as an older MGP bourbon would get, but I still detect lingering notes of wood polish and new leather. There is a decent amount of peppery heat that sticks around to make you slow down on your sips to let the fire calm down.

Score: 7.6/10

For the last 12 months, there has been a flood of five year-old MGP bourbon being released by various non-distiller producers and even MGP themselves. I have been a fan of them because for the price and age they’re all pretty darn good.

This six year single barrel shows that these will continue to improve with age. The high-rye mashbill has always been a favorite of mine because I enjoy the increased amount of fruits that I find with it. Other friends of mine find an increase in the level of spice. But overall, the price, age statement and proof make an unbeatable combination that I would pay for every time.

There’s a large amount of guys in the NJBYC who love to hunt and drink all sorts of highly aged MGP. But since the secondary is going nuts for most of those bottles, they can’t drink them as often as they like because of the expense and rarity.

But when they got their hands on this bottle, they have genuinely enjoyed it. I count myself as one of those who have enjoyed it too. As with all things in bourbon, you can’t always drink the good stuff. So when you still want a satisfying pour for the price, these 6 year old barrels could be the solution to a great bourbon that will scratch your itch and not break your wallet.

10 California Distilleries To Visit When Need  A Break From Wine

There are some great California distilleries you can visit now. States laws were recently updated for the first time since prohibition. The new law allows distilleries to open tasting rooms. We know, doesn't get better than that. We thought you might enjoy a list of some of the best California distilleries with tasting rooms. An extra bonus, most of these California distilleries are in major wine regions. That means you'll have something for everyone!

California wine country vineyards, wineries, restaurants, hotels, and events are on par with the best anywhere in the world. It stands to reason, then, that the distilleries popping up among the vineyards would be of equal quality. In 2000, there was just a handful, but by 2015, the 75 California distilleries intensified the already rich tapestry of the region.

Complementing the local wine and cuisine with another example of fine, handcrafted products, these ten California distilleries are a credit to the owners. You can expect to find distilleries on this list that deliver a range of spirits that reach from eclectic to traditional. Have a peek, or better yet, take a sip.

Distilleries To Visit In Northern California  

Napa valley distillery.

The Napa Valley Distillery was the first distillery to open in Napa since prohibition closed the doors on distilling between 1920 and 1933. Producing fabulous vodka made with single vintage Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc, along with a dozen small-batch releases like Old Hollywood Ginn made with nine rare botanicals and a little oak, Napa Valley Distillery offers tastings both at the Grand Tasting Salon in the distillery location as well as at the Vintage Bar Shop in the Oxbow Public Market in downtown Napa. Their boutique also offers a global selection of more than 400 cocktail bitters, syrups, shrubs, and cocktail accouterments. This is clearly one of the must-visit California distilleries.

Charbay Distillery

Charbay Distillery in St. Helena (Napa Valley) is one of America's oldest brandy producers. They have a line of fine brandies that begins with Alambic Pot Still Brandy in 1983. Like most of the high-end California distilleries, Charbay is a family affair benefiting from generations of experience carried across the ocean from Europe. Small-scale production of Whiskey, Tequila, Vodka, Rum, and Brandy provides a full menu for a wide range of palates.

The Whiskey R5 (Lot No. 4) is double-distilled using Bear Republic Brewery's Racer5 IPA beer, boasting awards for its 7 percent ABV, two-row barley, and aromatic hops on the front end leading to bittering hops and a clean smooth finish. Their Brandy No. 83, named for the year it was distilled from Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc grapes, is a premium Folle Blanche brandy aged in French Limousin oak. The brandy was released after 27 years to celebrate the anniversary of founder Miles Karakasevic's arrival in the new world. Today, Charbay Distillery sits alongside Charbay Winery, offering tasting, tours, and barrel-aged brandies, ports, aperitifs, with the option of a hand-rolled cigar.

Spirit Works Distillery

The Spirit Works Distillery in Sebastopol embraces the grain-to-glass philosophy held by most of these small California distilleries. They do their milling, mashing, fermenting, and distilling on-site. True to form, this artisan micro-distillery seeks out local organic ingredients whenever possible. Sailing, climbing, and distilled spirits are what Timo and Ashby Marshall love. They are proudly serving up their sips at the Barlow Open Air Maker Marketplace.

You can visit them for a tour and tasting. The cost is $20 per person.

Sonoma County Distilling Company

Sonoma County Distilling Company in Rohnert Park started up the trend in 2010 as one of the first 200 distilleries in the US. Distilling twice to reach the desired alcohol concentration. This California craft distillery uses direct fire Alembic pot stills that yield a consistent flavor with slight caramelization. Using non-GMO California grains and malted barley smoked in Petaluma with California Cherrywood, the spirit is then aged in new American oak from Missouri and Minnesota. The result is another standout, grain-to-glass spirit worthy of attention.

Sonoma Coast Spirits

Sonoma Coast Spirits is a small craft California distillery in Petaluma Maker's District with a gorgeous view from the cozy tasting bar inside the facility. A favorite for a dozen reasons, one is the World Spirits Gold Medal for founders Doug and Jill Olson's Lemon Drop craft cocktail. They also produce four vodkas and three Grappa selections. The Grappa is made from a recipe passed down by Jill's great-grandfather, Lionardo Dioguardi who distilled using local Zinfandel grapes under his own label in Santa Rosa prior to Prohibition. Taking advantage of the new 2016 laws allowing sales to the public in the tasting room, samples of craft cocktails allow the Olsons to share their passion on-site as well as to take home.

Alley 6 Craft Distillery

Alley 6 Craft Distillery is a California micro-distillery that opened in 2012. Located in the city of Healdsburg, its first and only distillery until some recent additions, treats guests to samples of their Rye Whiskey, Single Malt Whiskey, Harvest Gin, Candy Cap Bitters, and a selection of additional handcrafted selections while learning about the distilling process, followed by a distillery tour. Built, as founders Krystle and Jason Jorgensen say, with "thrifty nickels and a lot of brow sweat," Alley 6 is a family business that embraces a passion for making small-batch whiskeys born of time spent mixing drinks behind the bar.

Two 132-gallon Alembic copper pot stills help Alley 6 as they go about milling, mashing, fermenting, distilling, barreling, and bottling their complex, award-winning spirits. Composed of 78 percent rye and 22 percent aromatic malted barley, aged in new heavily-charred American white oak, Alley 6 Rye Whiskey puts vanilla, spice, and rye on the nose, followed by caramel on the palate. The Alley 6 Single Malt Whiskey is currently only available in the tasting room, which makes it a great reason to visit.

Prohibition Spirits Distillery

Prohibition Spirits Distillery offers tastings at Sonoma's Cornerstone Gardens, presenting California's first organic LimonCello, Hooker's House Whiskeys, Sugar Daddy Rums, Jack's Gins, Chauvet Brandies, and specialty spirits that show off founders Fred and Amy Groth's skills and innovative nature. In addition to spirits tastings, the duo provides mixology classes and accommodates private and group events in the serenity of the Cornerstone Gardens, complete with an outdoor test kitchen, art-filled gardens, live music, boutique wineries, and a stunning sunset view. This is a must-visit California distillery

Young & Yonder Spirits

Young & Yonder Spirits in Cloverdale is known for Armont Vodka, slowly distilled six times,  through several purification processes, delivering vodka that is smooth, clean, crisp, and refined for an excellent sip whether on the rocks or in a mixed cocktail.

Their H.O.B.S. Gin, named for Harbor of Broken Souls, gives a nod to the connection between this juniper, citrus, and floral spirit as a favorite of those who have spent their lives upon the sea. Years in the making, refining, and perfecting of this handcrafted spirit displays the perfect balance of juniper, lemon peel, coriander, lavender, hibiscus, bay leaf, angelica root, and cardamom. Look out for a very special bourbon from co-founders Josh Opatz and Sarah Fiske.

California Central Coast Distilleries

Re:Find Handcrafted Spirits in Paso Robles takes bleed, the free-run juice from premium red wine grapes before fermentation, and distills it into fine vodka and gin spirits. Usually discarded, winemakers turned distillers Alex and Monica Villicana found that triple distillation turned the juice into something exceptional. New offerings of rye whiskey and bourbon were released this year, adding to seasonal flavored spirits and an oak-infused vodka with spice and caramel that acts a lot like whiskey. Unique, refined, and stylish, this California distillery turns a cocktail into an event.

KroBār Craft Distillery

KroBār Craft Distillery in Paso Robles, mashing up the surnames of founders Stephen Kroener and Joe Barton is the result of a combined 40 years of alcohol business experience. This experience is why they chose the Vendome Copper and Brass Works in Louisville, KY to provide their still.

Tasting from the Social Room or from Ethanol Alley, the distillery overlooks vineyards along highway 46. The experience is a divine one from two guys that learned from the best at their parents' operations at Barton Family Wines and Silver Horse Winery. Discover just how appealing these spirits made from botanicals can be, sipping Rye Whiskey, Gin, Bourbon, and a white wine aperitif called Lit, making the most of Kroener's Albariño and Barton's Grenache Blanc and Viognier. The speakeasy tasting room vibe shares a patio with the Barton Family Wines Grey Wolf Cellars, where lunch is also an option.

Member behavior and Member contributions

We do not allow the sale and/or purchase of products between members through the Service, e.g. through private messages. If you wish to sell or purchase products, please refer to the Whiskybase Market.

Regardless of whether the Service offers the functionality to contribute, you are solely responsible and liable for any content and information that you create, upload, post, publish, link to, duplicate, transmit, record, display or otherwise make available on the Service or to other Members, such as chat messages, text messages, videos, audio, audio recordings, music, pictures, photographs, text and any other information or materials, whether publicly posted or privately transmitted (“Contributions”).

You shall not contribute any discriminatory, racially offensive, abusive, offensive, threatening, intimidating, inaccurate, incomplete, obscene, profane, harassing, or illegal material and/or Contributions, or any other Contributions that infringes, or may infringe, or violates or may violate, any third party’s rights, including intellectual and industrial property rights, rights of privacy and publicity. Contacting Members to sell or buy products or requesting other Members to sell or buy bottles outside our affiliated platform Whiskybase Market is considered a violation of these Terms and will lead to the termination of your account without prejudice to other rights we have under these Terms and applicable law.

You acknowledge, understand and agree that we are not obligated to review, check or monitor any Contributions, but we may do so. Furthermore, we may (without prior notice and without giving reasons) change, delete or alter any Contributions, whether in whole or in part, that in our sole judgment and discretion violates these Terms, is unlawful, is in any way harmful to you, Members, us, the Service or any third parties.

You hereby grant to us (including our parents, affiliates, subsidiaries, (sub)licensees, assignees, successors, authorized third party contractors), the worldwide, perpetual, irrevocable, unlimited in any way, non-exclusive, transferable, free of charge and fully paid-up, right and license to duplicate, copy, reproduce, distribute, publish, display, make available, perform, use, store, record, play, adapt, alter, modify, make derivative works of, or in any other way exploit your Contributions (including any past Contributions you already posted/created on the Service (and any previous version thereof)), through any and all means and media, whether now known or hereafter devised, including but not limited to the internet, websites, print, magazines, books, mobile applications, games, commercials, etc. We have the right to transfer, assign the license granted by you to us, or grant licenses and sublicenses to our licensees, or have and allow them granting sublicenses to licensees to any other parties.

The Service has been prepared by us solely for information purposes to Members and the Service is based on information we consider reliable and we obtain the contents of the Service from a number of different third party sources (including Contributions), but we do not endorse, support, represent, warrant or guarantee the completeness, truthfulness, accuracy, or reliability of the Services and any information therein.

A full-flavoured, tangy Daiquiri with faint clove spice.

Created at the eponymous club, established in Bermuda in 1844 and largely frequented by British Army Officers. Royal Bermuda Yacht Club cocktail first appears in Crosby Gaige's 1941 Cocktail Guide & Ladies' Companion as the favourite cocktail of Mary Mabon, then a writer for Harper's Bazaar fashion magazine.

Mary Mabon This lady, and make no mistake about it, she is, might have assumed any one of many rôles in life. She might have been Ethel Barrymore in Captain Jinks or Maude Adams in Peter Pan or Galen or George Sand or almost anyone except Fanny Farmer. She writes for Harper's Bazaar in aureate phrases with a golden pen, and I hope her publisher pays her accordingly. Mrs. Mabon first met up with her favourite concoction at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club, Hamilton, Bermuda. It is currently considered one of the best rum drinks on the island. Royal Bermuda Yacht Club Cocktail 3 parts Barbados Rum 1 part Lime Juice ½ part Falernum of Sugar Syrup Dash of Cointreau or Brandy Shake with plenty of ice and strain into cocktail glass. With such a drink the plantanitos fritos (fried banana chips) and the Taro chips that are new on the market are appetizing. Serve with these very small, not stuffed, green aniseed olives on a bed of crushed ice with the juice of half a lime squeezed over them. Crosby Gaige, Cocktail Guide & Ladies' Companion, 1941

The Macallan whisky confirms annual partnership with BOAT International Owners’ Club

BOAT International Media (BOAT) is delighted to announce that The Macallan is its new annual partner for the Owners’ Club in 2023.

With more than 300 members representing 20 different nationalities the Owners’ Club brings together some of the world’s most successful people through their shared passion for yachting. Members of the Owners' Club are invited to a series of worldwide events and as part of this year's calendar guests will be treated to Macallan whisky tastings. 

The Macallan was one of the first distillers in Scotland to be legally licensed in 1824 and has since built a reputation as a leading single malt whisky. The quality of the whisky is due to the high-quality ingredients and the Spanish oak casks used to mature the spirit. Members of the Owners' Club can expect to be able to taste a variety of whisky from The Macallan double cask range and the exclusive limited releases.

Olde River Yacht Club is overflowing with character, yet somehow manages to stay under the radar, which I adore. While EYC seems to capture a lot of attention in this area, Olde River is just charmingly around the corner. It also has the benefit of being one of the only yacht clubs truly against the industrial backdrop of CLE. Its unique in that sense-- the rust belt chic industrial life sits in the background of everything you do there. Factories, big ships, etc. With about 200 slips, vessels of all size can find a home here and they do yearly leases. They have a stunning pool (particularly at night) and nice programming throughout the year, like Cavs watch parties and "Dive-In" showings of newer movies. They also do Adults Only swimming, which is an A+ in my book, and have frequent live musicians, which is pretty rare for Cleveland area clubs. The proximity is super close to Downtown Cleveland, and is hidden away just off the Edgewater exit but near the fishing pier and the park. The restaurant menu is small but mighty with daily specials rotating in and out, and the food is standard yacht club fare (salads, burgers, etc.) Overall, Olde River is a lovely option for boaters young and old as well as new and experienced. The crowd is remarkably diverse and welcoming!

This place rocks! Katie is f****** awesome! If you don't like your drink, she will gladly make you something more to your appeal. She even accommodates music requests. Just don't bother her when she is busy......I kid, I kid. I also love Jess, but she is not here today.

2018 Update: The place is a mess again this year. Last year was a complete disaster - the bar, restaurant, and pool areas were consistently filthy, and they've kept it going this year. I haven't tried the food yet this year because the tables are typically all filled with dirty dishes and glasses. Quite a lot of the docks are vacant, and garbage is filling up those areas, causing a stench around the whole building. They removed the hot tub for this year, which was a big evening attraction. The bathrooms have a worse sewer smell than previously. I'm giving up - I will dock elsewhere next year. 2016 Update: Everything is great this year! All the key fobs finally work, and they don't seem to run out of liquor or beer nearly as often. Unfortunately, they are now instituting monthly spending minimums similar to other yacht clubs. Previous review 09/14/15: Love the pool, love the bar, love the bands. For the 2015 season, the food has been consistently good, but very inconsistent in presentation. Example: Sometimes a "fried chicken sandwich" is a fried breast of chicken and other times it's fried chicken tenders cut to fit a bun. I've never once received the "blue corn chips" or "pineapple salsa" when I've ordered the any of the dips. It's always bagged tortilla chips that are unremarkable. There is NO consistency with plating - sometimes an item comes on a plate, sometimes in a cup, sometimes with sides, sometimes not, etc. Servers and bartenders are at least four star, but seem to get overwhelmed and annoyed at the place. I've received too many cold dishes that sat at the bar because the bartender was the only one working the patio that afternoon. They are always nice and helpful, though, even if you have to ambush someone that's not your server. Stocking the bar is a huge issue, too - why can't they get the inventory together? Liquor doesn't go bad! Beyond the atmosphere and food, I'm very unhappy with the membership service this year. No NEW key fobs work at the gate. After you pay to be a member, it's sad that you hope and pray each time that someone will answer at the gate and let you in - god forbid you suffer that embarrassment in front of guests. The idea of "charging to your member account" is also ridiculous, unless you want to stand there while an already overworked bartender flips through a binder (binder? paper? really?) to find your name and credit card info (on paper? in a binder? behind the bar?). Overall, the employees are good and it's not a terrible value, which is what redeems this place.

It is unfortunate that this yacht club is considered to be one of the nicer marinas in Cleveland, and has the WORST customer service and hospitality experience and the staff and management are unprofessional and rude. This past weekend I accidentally left my credit card and drivers license, which was never returned to me after cashing out my tab the night before. I rarely open tabs, so I did not even think of it, until I had gone home that evening. I attempted to call the yacht club by the phone number listed on Google and there was no answer, I then called the restaurant number listed on the website and gentleman answered the phone in a casual manner and I inquired if I had reached Olde River Yacht Club, he said that I did. I then proceeded to ask him if he could check to see if my credit card was there, thinking that he was at the restaurant at the yacht club. He immediately snapped at me and said "you are going to have to go down there and check." I then asked if I could be transferred to someone else, he said, "NO! I am not going to be down there until 2pm. so you are going to have to go down there and ask!" Needless to say I was very upset at this point, not only for obvious reasons that I was unaware of where my credit card or drivers license was, but that no one was able to help me. I then drove an hour back down to the marina, hoping that they had my cards and if there were any fraudulent charges made. Once I arrived, I asked two girls in the cabana if they could check and they told me to go to the inside restaurant and ask. I went to the inside restaurant and the girl looked inside her register and saw nothing, then went back outside to the cabana and came back with my drivers license, but no credit card. This was weird considering they both should have been together. Another woman joined in the search and went outside to the cabana and to the office and came back empty handed. At this point I was starting to get very upset and no one was giving me any answers or assistance. I asked if there was a possibility if my card may have been returned to a different customer, and the second woman snapped at me and said, "Oh no! We do no not do that!" My first instinct was to remind her that the reason I was there was because they lost my card and again I was concerned about its whereabouts. They all disappeared and I was left trying to get answers, so I decided to call my bank and freeze my account. At this point I got the impression that they did not want to assist me any longer. I then went outside to the pool and waited for the rest of my party to arrive. I was very disappointed on how I was treated and how this was handled. This is not my first time having problems with this place and I think that it is very unfortunate, considering the amount of money that is spent for people to be part of this prestigious yacht club. I have been treated better at other places on Whiskey Island and the Marina and it is even more unfortunate when that was my first weekend off in months and I was really looking forward to some fun in the sun and to spend some of my hard earned money on it. Perhaps the new marina being built near the Rock Hall will actually have employees that know how to treat someone and have some customer service skills. The greatest part of this terrible experience, was when I decided to ask another bartender in the cabana that waited on me the night before to see if she knew where my credit card was, she immediately nodded, opened up her register and handed it to me. This made really wonder what these other bartenders were looking for earlier, when I was made to feel stupid in thinking that they lost my card. Now I have to wait 7-10 days to get another card in the mail, when they had the card the entire time.
