Considering a 45 Yacht

Hey all, wheels are turning and I am thinking about my last boat. After 4 Formula?s why not make it 5! My current 37PC is mint, no real reason to sell other than to go bigger so I may list it in the early spring. After researching, looks like anything after 2009 is a better bet because of the ring gears in the pods were updated to stainless. Newer navionics and other updates that wouldn?t need immediate attention due to age. So any real downfalls from Yacht Owners? 2010-2014 is the year range I?m considering, anyone selling? Plans may be to do the Loop in 2023, so I figure I ought to get it sooner than later to shake it down. Dave

Hi Dave, I recently went from a 2016 Sea Ray Sundancer 330 to a 2015 Formula 45 Yacht and all I can say is the my Family and I love it and it was one of the best decisions we made in the boating world. One of things that we love about the 45 is the cockpit and its enormous windows. The visibility is in unmatched, coming from the 330 with isinglass, this was a huge upgrade.. We looked at a lot of boats from Reagal, Tiara, Azimut to larger Sea Rays when we were upgrading and nothing could match the feel of the 45 cockpit’s and layout. Everything is where it should be. The ride on the 45 is smooth and the handling is amazing. The boat is over 32k lbs and goes through chop like its nothing and we cruise around 30 mph. We live in the northeast and just put her away for the winter this past Tuesday, the heat in the cockpit kept us more than comfortable when it got cold up here and we were able to extend our season. The amount of room and storage you have throughout the boat is amazing. I have 2 teenage boys that bring a lot of stuff along with them and we never not had a spot for it. We spent long weekends on the boat from August (when we purchased it) through October, and never felt cramped. With the 7 ft ceilings, the extra bathroom and separate shower it was more than comfortable for the 4 of us and friends/family that came by to visit. One thing I was worried about coming from the 330 was naturally docking, but I have to say it is easier to dock the 45 than the 330 (which had the axis joystick) due to the Volvo ips system. Even in windy conditions I was able to put the boat where I wanted to, which made my wife very happy and stress free. I can’t agree more with Matty Ray. The 45 is awesome. We spent the whole summer on it, at least 3 nights a week. My wife, 2 teenage boys, a 65lb black lab, and me. Lots of good adventures anywhere between Greenport NY and Edgartown, MA. Just do it!

My Formula 45 has the hydraulic swim platform which made launching and retrieving the tender very easy. That’s a worthwhile option in my view. I did change out the chocks to “Drop-in” chocks so that I could easily remove them when the tender was off so that there was no trip hazard on the platform. Also, I had the Dockmate system installed this year which gives you a portable joystick to control the pods. This made single handed docking and dealing with mooring balls and anchor operations much easier as I can control the boat from anywhere. We had a blast on 8 different overnights/weekends to Martha’s Vineyard, Block Island, Cutty Hunk, and even just dropping anchor in Narragansett Bay coves. The boat is comfortable and a very capable cruiser. You’ll love it!

Great info, how much are you into the DockMate System for and you think it can be a DIY? Dave  

The Dockmate system was around $11k installed. I felt that was expensive but, at the same time, I wanted to be able to single hand dock my boat confidently. When the wind is blowing it was hard to get from the helm to the cleats quickly enough before the boat drifted out of position. With the Dockmate I could be standing on the swim platform and controlling the boat with one hand on the remote joystick while getting it secured to the dock with the other. Then I could step on to the dock and still control the bow with the joystick while I was preparing to tie off the bow line. Same story for picking up a mooring line. I would sit on the bow of the boat and control the boat with the joystick while I could clearly see (and reach) the line or pick-up buoy. Finally it was helpful when pulling up the anchor too. I could easily see from the bow which direction I needed to move the boat to put slack in the anchor chain so I could operate the windlass without a load on it.
