The first thing that owner Kevin Müller noticed when he launched his newly acquired second-hand yacht was its stability. "The Bavaria is much less slender than my old Varianta," Müller is still pleased today. His previous boat, the epitome of the burgeoning series yacht building of the 1970s, sold almost four thousand times, has very little initial stability. Cruising with this boat meant tippy camping on the water. The Bavaria 707, on the other hand, was considered to be a stable caravan.

The new launch from Giebelstadt was also probably the first German production yacht with a designer hired specifically for the interior. From today's perspective, the cabin is dark, but contemporary: teak furniture was the measure of all things in living rooms back then. From this perspective, the Bavaria is cosy. "And it has a lot of storage space, there was much less on the Varianta," says the owner.

The Bavaria 707 was the antithesis of the sporty Dehler

His Varianta was a Corona sponsored purchase for just under seven thousand euros; Müller bought her in March 2021 without sailing her on land in driving snow. As soon as he set sail for the first time, Müller noticed how quickly the boat heeled, which didn't please him, his wife or their dog Emma. However, as this did nothing to dampen his passion for sailing, it was clear that another boat was needed.

Dehler and Bavaria were the antipodes of inland sailing in the 1980s. In the West, the Dehler yachts from Freienohl in Westphalia dominated. These were sport-oriented boats, such as the Varianta. Dehler's in-house designer was the Dutchman Rico van de Stadt, a regatta freak by background.

But the south and Berlin were Bavaria territory. The owner of the shipyard at the time, Winfried Herrmann, couldn't sail himself. Until the first Bavaria, the 707, was built, he had run a window manufacturing business with two hundred employees. The switch to yacht building began in 1978 with the Bavaria 707, after Mr and Mrs Meltl joined the company, which had previously been active as a yacht dealer and charter broker.

"The dinette layout appealed to housewives, who had to be on the boat." Looking back today, Dorothea Meltl explains the expansion concept: "The 707 turned out to be a big seller." But first, she and her husband Josef invested their entire fortune in the window manufacturers' shipyard, which was initially threatened with bankruptcy. Meltl had once set up her own business selling counter displays for tights and from then on practised selling. It was always about "talking to people". And Meltl's down-to-earth attitude also helps him in the yacht industry.

Thirty years after these beginnings, Bavaria realised over one billion euros when it was sold. An exemplary company history. "It was crazy," Josef Meltl said in the "Yacht" interview, "how many bankers were sitting opposite us. I didn't even understand half of what they were saying."

The dinette made the Bavaria 707 a bestseller

Kevin Müller bought his Bavaria 707 for around 9000 euros. He was able to find information about the boat type in advance in an old issue of YACHT. "In our opinion, the interior layout is not optimal," was how tester Georg Nissen assessed the dinette at the time, which later proved to be a bestseller. The workmanship, deck layout and sailing characteristics, on the other hand, fully satisfied the testers.

On the test day, Müller's example of Bavaria's first boat is taken across the Brombachsee. The boat lies comfortably on the rudder, but turns agilely - the designer had dispensed with a skeg. Back then, this was emphasised and hardly welcomed.

The boat does not run very high, but the sails are also original, i.e. original equipment. At the time, the tester was impressed by the deck covering. It is now crumbling and tops Kevin Müller's refit list. In a few weeks, the trailer will be travelling to Corsica, and by then the owner would like to have the deck recoated with elastic plastic.

Only the bare essentials are on board for winches and fittings

But his to-do list is even longer. A 200-watt solar panel on the lifting roof, which can also be hung on the railing, will provide power for a cooling drawer. Müller also wants to retrofit four self-tailing winches instead of the conventional Lewmar models and also bolt on larger cleats. YACHT tester Georg Nissen had already criticised these as being too small. The same applies to the fittings. The blocks and clamps came from established manufacturers such as Sprenger in Iserlohn and Nemo in Italy. The shipyard had not skimped here, but only equipped the bare essentials, as the boats themselves were extremely affordable compared to the competition from series production.

The boat also needs to be prepared for the upcoming journey below deck. A gimbal suspension and pot holder for the cooker are on the wish list, but this does not pose any major problems for the locksmith.

The upholstery has already been reupholstered in-house. Müller has even come up with a fastening system for the backrest upholstery that makes it possible to quickly access the many storage spaces behind it. Thanks to spring-loaded cords, as known from ski passes, the upholstery now snaps back into place automatically. The electric pod drive has also already proved its worth. For the Mediterranean, however, an additional 10 hp outboard motor is fitted to the stern.

Müller also prepares the boat for the trailer journey: "The previous owner had weighed the boat together with the aluminium trailer, but unfortunately it was only six kilograms short of the permissible total weight. That's why the anchor chain is put in the car on the journey.

For Kevin Müller, the Bavaria 707 was a stroke of luck. Motivated by the original pandemic idea, he also followed his new passion professionally this summer and took over a boat service.

Around 520 units of the Bavaria 707 were built between 1978 and 1985, all laminated alternately with mats and roving. At the time, the shipyard gave a 5-year guarantee on all GRP parts. Bulkheads and stringers are laminated, the 28 mm sandwich deck has Conticell inserts

According to the concept of the sailing weekend cottage, many used boats still have sails, running and standing rigging from the year of construction. However, the option of trailering, which was advertised at the time, was usually not utilised and so the substance of the used boats on offer is usually still good

You should pay attention to this

With the exception of osmosis damage, all repairs and modernisations are manageable in terms of cost and effort. The deck covering crumbles badly over the years, and blocks, discs and stoppers often need to be replaced. Otherwise, look out for hairline cracks and defective sandwich cores

A job worth doing is worth doing properly, so the saying goes. There’s no doubt that Bavaria have committed wholeheartedly to the concept behind their new C38 and the result is a boat fully confident in its identity. That’s a good job, given the level of competition the C38 will be up against in the 37-38ft production cruiser market.

This boat aims to do three things: create the absolute maximum amount of space on deck and below from the available waterline length; be enjoyable and engaging to sail, if not a race boat; and give a potential buyer the maximum bang for their buck. In practice, the design has added significant volume in both the bow and the stern, introduced a deeper, rounder forefoot to reduce slamming, and has deepened the single rudder, which, coupled with the bow thruster, should give plenty of control in harbour and underway.

A first look at the boat reveals a few significant details. Firstly, her waterline takes up almost her entire length, with virtually no overhangs at the ends. Then there are the chines. This is only the second Bavaria to have hull chines, and they are used to take the significant beam, which is carried all the way aft, down to the water, creating more volume in the aft cabins, as well as providing power to the hull form. Next, there’s the huge bluff bow and vertical stem, again multiplying the volume in the forward cabin. Pretty it might not be, but there’s a certain purposeful muscularity to it.

Bavaria Yachts, the company, gained new owners in 2018, and they’ve been quick to make a fresh start, starting with a plan to update the entire range. Having moved from design house J&J to Cossutti Design, the C38 is the latest, smallest boat in the new lineup. The strongly chined hull shape makes a bold statement about that new direction. I was keen to see how this added up on the water.

TEST VERDICT

If you looked at this yacht and thought the vast volume would make her a poor sailer, you would be mistaken. I was very pleasantly surprised at how much fun we had sailing her. The feel on the helm was direct, responsive and engaging; this boat is fun to sail. She wasn’t twitchy even when overpressed and gave plenty of warning before the rudder started to lose grip. This boat reminds you of why a single rudder makes sense, and is deep enough that she has plenty of grip even when heeled, which is the main reason wide-sterned boats have twin rudders. The benefits when handling in harbour are huge, given that manoeuvring and mooring is the most stressful part of any cruise for most owners.

Granted, the mainsheet purchase needs a bit of improvement, but if I were buying this boat, I’d go for the more easily handled furling main and self-tacking jib, with the Code Zero for the extra sail area to keep the boat moving off the wind. This would seem to fit with the ethos of simple and fun sailing that this boat ascribes to.

WOULD SHE SUIT YOU AND YOUR CREW?

I’d imagine this boat will prove popular with sailing schools and charter companies, but if you’re after maximum boat for your buck for family coastal cruising, this is definitely worth a look too.

The idea of having three king-sized beds on what is really a 36-foot hull is staggering. You’d have to weigh up whether you want an ensuite owner’s head enough to sacrifice some of this bed space in the forward cabin, but given the layout options, there seems little reason to go for the two-cabin rather than three-cabin layout. If you’re not using the third you could still use it for the stowage you’d be missing out on.

Given the price point of this boat, the quality of finish was really very good, and the resurrected Bavaria has upped its game several notches. Arguably, the C38 could now be the boat to beat in this size sector and you’ll struggle to get more new boat for your money than this.

The new BAVARIA SR33 – The latest premiere of the successful SR-LINE

published on September 30th 2022 With the BAVARIA SR33, BAVARIA YACHTS is announcing another model of their successful SR-LINE, following the SR41 and the SR36, for the 2023 season.

As with all motor yachts in the BAVARIA SR-LINE, the focus during development was on creating space for life on deck. Below deck, the BAVARIA SR33 also impresses with a well-thought-out room layout, providing generous space for four people.

After the BAVARIA SR41 and the BAVARIA SR36, the BAVARIA SR33 is the newest member of the BAVARIA SR-LINE , which clearly follows the design philosophy of the SR-LINE. The development team at BAVARIA YACHTS has thought of plenty of clever solutions to meet all the demands family & friends crews might have. On board the BAVARIA SR33, individual relaxation, sociable hours at sea and yachting fun in general each have their own space. That makes the BAVARIA SR33 the ideal yacht for individual requirements.

Simply enjoying the sun and time with the family. The bow with its generous sunbed is the perfect place to relax , with the comfortable upholstery stretching across the entire surface of the structure, including useful cupholders for refreshments.

Spending time as a couple or with friends is the focus in the cockpit. Breakfast, dinner, or a small snack are quickly prepared at the large wet bar including a cooking plate, fridge and sink, and can be served directly at the large cockpit table. Flexible thanks to the fold-down backrest of the sunbed at the stern, there is space for up to six people.

Whatever you would like to do, the sunbed at the stern fulfils several functions, as is typical for the SR-LINE. It is a sunbed, a bench seat for the cockpit table, storage space or, with the optional lowerable table, transforms into a beach terrace right near the water. And from the integrated bathing platform, the sea is just a hop away.

Experiencing power and freedom together was the development team’s goal when designing the helmstand. Thanks to the construction of the hardtop with robust, stainless-steel struts at the stern and large window areas, there is almost an unobstructed 360° view . From the lounge area portside, you have the best view ahead and can enjoy the sun and the wind through the large sunroof together with the helmsman.

Below deck, the BAVARIA SR33’s concept offers plenty of light, plenty of space, four sleeping berths, a cabin and a large salon. The salon and the large bed in the bow merge to become a generous, loft-like room. During the day, the BAVARIA SR33’s open room design with large hull windows and skylight provide light and a pleasant sense of space, no matter the weather. And if all guests would like to stay overnight, the salon table can be lowered to provide a further sleeping berth, so nothing gets in the way of cosy hours below deck, even for six people.

A double bed with the dream dimensions of 2.00 x 1.60 meters and a comfortable couch turn the cabin amidships into your personal suite after a long day at sea. Plenty of storage space for shorts and shirts for you and your partner are a given with BAVARIA YACHTS.

Spacious with a separate shower, a free-standing washbasin and classy fittings , the bathroom is not just functional, but also a place where you feel at ease.

As with the sister ships in the SR-LINE, the BAVARIA SR33’s design and lines come from the famous Italian yacht designer Marco Casali and his team. The concept, layout and engineering are, of course, from BAVARIA’s experienced development team. The 11.40 m long and 3.46 m wide hull was optimised for rapid, safe handling characteristics by the experts from the naval architecture office Micad. Double engines from Volvo Penta and Mercruiser of 500 to 700 HP, as well as a single drive of 380 HP from Volvo Penta, provide powerful yet economical propulsion.

The BAVARIA SR36 was just nominated for the 2023 European Powerboat of the Year and the 2023 Best of Boats awards. The BAVARIA SR41 was already crowned 2022 Powerboat of the Year in England. With the BAVARIA SR33, another member with award potential is joining the BAVARIA SR-LINE. Its official world debut is planned for January 2023 at the boot in Dusseldorf.
