The Exact Bareboat Charter Requirements in Croatia

It's a drag to find the bareboat charter requirements for Croatia. So I've contacted a couple of charter companies to find out exactly what you'll need.

What are the bareboat charter requirements in Croatia? To charter bareboat in Croatia, the most crucial requirement is that at least one of the crew members possesses a valid nautical certificate of competence (ICC) and a VHF radio certificate. Without these, you will not be able to charter a boat.

That's about it for most charters. However, there are some specifics you'll need for larger boats.

Certificates

The only things you'll definitely need are a valid nautical license and a VHF license. This goes for any type of boat.

Important: without these licenses, no charter company in Croatia will give you the boat without a crew - even if you have a lot of experience. The Croatian law is very strict on this. Anyone from your charter group can have the license, as long as both licenses are there.

Below I'll explain the different licenses in more detail.

Travel Documents

Of course, you'll need valid travel documents for staying in Croatia.

If you're an EU-citizen, you'll generally only need an ID card.
If you're from the U.S., Canada or Australia, you'll most likely only need a passport.

You can stay up to 90 days with just these documents, no visas required. Make sure your travel documents are at least 3 months valid.

The companies also suggested sending my documents and the name of the boat I want to rent before making any plans. This way, they can check if I'm eligible to charter the boat or not.

This is also known as the ICC ( International Certificate of Competence ) or International Certificate for Operator of Pleasure Craft . You'll want to get this if you're planning on sailing international or coastal waters or chartering boats in Europe.

The ICC is accepted in nearly all Mediterranean waters. There are some exceptions, but in practice, even in these countries, most charter companies will accept the ICC as sufficient proof of sailing experience.

In most countries, you can get an ICC by getting the right national boating licenses. After that, you can simply apply for an ICC with the right authorities.

For example, in The Netherlands, you simply obtain Boat License I + II.

In the U.K., however, you need to successfully complete an official ICC training with one of the approved ICC test centers.

In most countries, there are basically two tiers of boat license:

Boat license 1 - Inland
Boat license 2 - Coastal

Some countries also issue a third tier, specifically for international waters.

Most countries will only issue an ICC after obtaining both (or all three) national boat licenses.

In the U.K. you need to get the International Certificate for Operator of Pleasure Craft from the RYA (Royal Yacht Association).

Besides an International Certificate of Competence, you also need a VHF Radio Certificate. This certificate simply means that you know how to use a VHF radio. Croatia accepts foreign certificates for most countries.

You can get one by successfully completing a VHF radio course. Every country issues its own courses, and you'll have to check with your national marine authorities which course to take.

In some countries, you can take this course online. For example in the UK, where it takes between 4 - 8 hours to costs about £65.

United Kingdom

Organization : Royal Yachting Association (RYA) License : International Certificate for Operator of Pleasure Craft (Coastal Waters, Power up to 10m)

With this license, you may sail:

According to Croatian law, at least one person on the vessel must posess valid nautical and VHF licences. So, if you don’t want to hire a skipper, in order to charter a boat, you must have valid licenses in addition to sailing experience.

Navigational and VHF licences in Croatia are issued by Port Authorities, and if you licence is issued in a foreign country, please check wheter it’s valid for Craotian territorial waters. To obtain the licence, one must take classes and pass exam that include theoretical and practical elements.

If you want to charter bareboat, you must send us copies of your licences in advance to confirm the booking. In case there is something wrong with your papers, we’ll inform you on time. You must have the originals with you on board so don’t forget to take them.

Croatian laws are very strict on this issues and it is impossible to charter a boat without all necessary papers.

In addition to navigational and VHF licence, you must also have a certified crew list on board. We will get this document for you when you deliver us all needed information and give it to you when checking in. you must have this paper on board and crew must always be in accordance to it. In case some changes in the crew occure during the sail, you must notifiy us immediately and get a new list.

If you want to try fishing or some recreative sports diving ,you’ll need special permits. In order to be allowed to sports dive you must be a member of the Croatian Diving Asocciation. The membership is valid for one year, and you must be an experienced diver to join. On the fround of National Parks Mljet and Kornati Islands, you’ll also need special diving permits. Sports and underwater fishing also regure special permits, and, if you’d like, we can get them for you. However, diving licence you’ll have to get yourself.

The prices to rent a car in Croatia is relatively the same as in the Eu, it starts from 40€ per day depending on the car. However, the agencies in Balkans are flexible concerning driving a car to the neighboring countries. Nevertheless, it is better to avoid driving from Croatia to Serbia or inversely.
The currency in Croatia is the “HRK.” Kuna. Many touristic places will accept the Euro, but because the official currency is Kuna in Croatia, they will not always accept € , it is preferable to convert € or $ to Kuna so that you won’t have any surprises.
Croatia’s cash machines (ATMs) accept many European bank cards such as Credit cards, Diners Clubs, Euro card, Master Cards, Visa, American Express, and much more. Of course, you’ll need to read the directions on the machine before any transaction.

When is the Best Time to Sail?

The sailing season begins from April to October, but the best time will depend on the type of sailing trip and activities you wish to do.

April : It is relatively pleasant during the day. The places are still not crowded, and the winds are mild making it an ideal time to sail. Daily temperatures 13 degrees and can reach up to 17 degrees. Sea temperatures 15 degrees. Not all tourist attractions are open.
May : The temperatures climb and can reach up to 21 degrees. The places start to fill up with tourists. The weather is warm and dry with light and moderates winds. Sea temperatures 18 degrees. All the tourist attractions are open!
June: The peak season begins. The weather is hot and dry with a light and moderate winds. Daily Temperatures 22 degrees and can reach up to 27 degrees. Sea temperatures 21 degrees. It is relatively crowded, and all the attractions are open.
July: It is extremely hot and dry. The temperatures 28 degrees and can reach up to 30 degrees. Sea temperatures 24 degrees. The places are crowded, and all the tourist attractions are alive!
August: The weather is very similar to July. It is extremely hot and dry. The daily temperatures 28 degrees and can reach up to 30 degrees. Sea temperatures stay the same as in July, 24 degrees. The places are crowded with tourists, and all the attractions are open to everyone.
September: The temperatures drop down, but it is still warm enough to enjoy water sports activities. Be aware that the high winds called Bura and Sirocco are present in September, it is an excellent time for an exciting sailing trip. The daily temperatures are around 16 degrees and can reach up to 19 degrees. The sea temperatures are still pleasant, 23 degrees. The crowds begin to disappear, and the tourist attractions are still open.
October : The weather is still warm, but it gets much cooler in the evenings. The high winds called Bura and Sirocco are present during October making the sailing trip challenging! The daily temperatures 18 degrees and can reach up to 22 degrees. The sea temperatures 20 degrees which are still agreeable for swimming. Tourist attraction starts to close, and the crowds are gone.

Where to Sail?

There are many places to sail in Croatia, and it is not always easy to find a route. Here is a sample of an itinerary that may suit you if you plan to sail in the Adriatic Sea.

Day 1. Maslinica Bay – Split Maslinica is a lovely fishing village situated on Solta island in Split. There is a small church, a delightful hotel, a nice gallery of autochthonous that sell souvenir called “Šoltanski trudi”, an Amphitheatre and few restaurants. A great place to stroll around!

Day 2. Komiza Komiza is a coastal town situated at the bottom of the hum hill on the western coast of Vis. Komiza is blessed with beautiful wide pebble beaches named Kamenica, Gusarica, Nova Pošta, and Velo Žalo. This lovely coastal town offers so many excellent attractions for visitors to enjoy such as diving center, hotels, apartments, monasteries, fortresses, wineries, historical sights and good restaurants

Day 3. Bisevo – Vis Bisevo is a beautiful island made of limestone located on the Adriatic coast about five kilometers Southwest of Vis island. A part of the island is filled with pine forests, and the rest of it is full of bare rocks. There is a preserved church called Saint Sylvester and the famous Blue Cave which is one of the most popular attractions of the Adriatic Coast.

Day 4. islet Budihovac – Vis Islet Budihovac is a lovely uninhabited island situated in the South of Vis. There is a pebble beach located on a shallow Bay just nearby Ravnik island where you’ll find the famous green cave. Not to miss out!

Day 5. Hvar (Palmizana) Palmazana is a beautiful uninhabited tourist resort situated in the Paklinski Islands archipelago in Hvar. The lovely small resort has a marina that can welcome about 200 boats as well as a small grocery store and a restaurant. Even if the place gets crowded in high season, you will always find a tranquil spot in one of the marvelous hidden Bays to relax.

Day 6. Stari Grad Stari Grad is small town situated on the Northern side of Hvar in Dalmatia Islands archipelago. This lovely town is located at the end of a beautiful deep protected Bay just near an agricultural land. Stari Grad is surrounded by many fantastic Bays called Tiha, Zavala, Gracisce, Arkada, and Maslinica. If active nightlife and crowds are not exactly what you seek, then this place is just for you!

Day 7. Milna – Split Milna is located in a protected cove about 4 miles away from Hvar and surrounded by two beautiful beaches separated by a fantastic pine forest. Milna has a shop and several charming restaurants offering homemade olive oil and local wine. Not far from Milna, there is a lovely village named Malo Grabjie with quiet beaches and hidden coves where you can suck up the sun and relax!

To charter a bareboat in Croatia, you need to have an International Certificate of Competence (ICC) plus a VHF license qualified by a national sailing body such as the ISA or RYA.

1. Make sure to provision your boat before the departure. You can either do some shopping by yourself or order through the company you sail with. You don’t want to get stuck in the middle of the sea without any drink or food!

2. Pay very close attention to your contact! If a vessel cancellation occurs for any reason, you may lose the initial deposit 50% of the charter price you’ve paid when you reserved the boat.

3. If you are a novice sailor, and you charter a boat without skipper make sure to choose a route with good winds and relatively close to any marinas or inlets in the area in case the weather suddenly change.

This is something I have always wanted to do but have been to afraid to because I don’t know the first thing about sailing and I have always worried in regards to pirates and there being more and more accounts of them seizing boats.

Although the picture you have here of Bisevo â€“ Vis is absolutely beautiful and is something I would really love to see for myself.

The sea is very impressive and can be unpredictable, therefore it is comprehensible to have fears especially if you’ve never sailed before. But I can assure you that there is nothing to be afraid of as the trip is well organised and a professional crew take care of the navigation and the safety of the boat.

There are dangers everywhere and at every moment in the world and living in fears will not arrange anything. There are much more car accidents than boat accidents! I am more afraid when I am driving a car than when I am on a sailing trip:) The same principle as for pirates. There are much more criminals on land than pirates offshore.

About the sailing courses, I am sure there are a few sailing schools, maybe not in Vis but you will find one easily in Split or in Dubrovnik which is not far from Vis island.

I would definitely suggest you first hire a skipper as you can learn a lot from his experience and if you like it then take some sailing courses.

What qualifications do you need to charter a yacht in croatia.

Chartering a bareboat in Croatia requires a valid skipper's license that is issued by the state authority of the country that you are coming from. For sailing in Croatian territorial waters, you need a valid nautical international certificate of competence (ICC) and a VHF radio.

If you are not sure that your permit is adequate, please check here if the certificate issued from your country is competent for Croatian waters. Charter agencies also need a copy of skipper's license for each bareboat booking. You must show the original at the check in. Hiring Catamaran in Croatia with displacement over 30 BRT requires a license that covers that tonnage.

WHAT IS A BAREBOAT CHARTER?

Bareboat yacht charter allows you to independently sail and explore the area where you chartered the vessel. Renting a bareboat is the most affordable and common option of chartering yachts in the Mediterranean ensuring you the ultimate on board privacy. The renter takes the full responsibility for provisioning the yacht, navigation and the safety of people on board.

HOW DO I BOOK A BAREBOAT CHARTER?

Simply fill in the form below selected yacht charter that suits you needs and send us your inquiry. We will answer as quickly as possible and prepare a suitable offer.

Your booking is confirmed after you sent us the final confirmation and a signed charter contract. Advanced payment of 50% is required within 7 days after confirmation, the balance needs to be settled one month before your charter starts. WHEN IS THE CHECK IN/CHECK OUT?

Due to charter conditions (unless is arranged differently in you boarding pass) your check in starts on Saturday from 15:00, disembarkation at the same spot the next Saturday before 09:00. Please notice, that is advisable to appoint your check out time with the charter staff.

It is also expected to return the yacht fully charged with fuel until Friday evening due to underwater inspection.

WHAT AND HOW MUCH IS DEPOSIT?

Deposit is the insurance (assurance), that you will return the yacht back in its previous condition. When you hire a bareboat charter , you also take the responsibility for damages caused during your trip.

The deposit is charged at the embarkation and 100% refundable , if the boat is returned undamaged. The deposit amount is set by the charter policy (depends on the boat length, age and insurance rate) payable by VISA, AMEX, EUROCARD, DINERS or cash). We can offer a deposit insurance with non-refundable fee (app.10% of the full insurance sum).

CAN I INSURE THE DEPOSIT?

Yes. Most of the yacht charters in Croatia approve that option. But please let us know beforehand that you want that option. Deposit insurance is the sum that should cover the damages. And it is non-refundable. The amount depends on the age, the length and the insurance policy of the vessel. Usually the amount is from (150-300€).

Some charters demand also a small refundable part (10%) to cover the damages like fee for unblocking the toilet, lost/damaged dinghy or outboard engine, gross negligence damage, vandalism and if the yacht is nor refueled at the return.

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN A BAREBOAT CHARTER?

When you hire a bareboat charter , you already pay for some items, besides the yacht beforehand. The inclusions vary from boat owner's policy. They are much dependable on you Charter Package. But usually the items that you prepay are:

Handling fees at the check in and check out
Transit log & End cleaning
Wi-Fi up to 5 GB

WHAT ARE THE OBLIGATORY EXTRAS?

Obligatory extras are additional items that you will be required to pay at the charter office when hiring a yacht. Some of the items you already paid to your charter agency, when you confirmed the booking. However, there are some obligatory extras, that you need to pay at spot like:

- Croatia local tax (1,4€/day/person)

- Deposit (view our section on Deposit). All extras are specified in your charter contract. It is also expected to

- Refuel the yacht before returning to base.

WHAT ARE THE OPTIONAL EXTRAS?

The optional is considered the items that your charter offers extra. It is desired to order your extras beforehand. So that they can be prepared for you at check in. The extras:

SUP and various water toys (from 100€/week)
Early check in (from 100-150€)
Railing net for kids (50-130€)
Wi-Fi over 5 GB (app. 20€/week)
Provisioning - you can pre-order your food and drinks aboard
Taxis and airport-to-marina transfers (app. 30€ one way)
Car parking is charged by the valid marina price list. (usually from 6-11€/day)

The extras are charged according to the charter's price list. Some of these items, are offered as a welcome package and are already included.

WEATHER AND TEMPERATURES DURING THE SAILING SEASON IN CROATIA?

Croatia weather conditions are pretty much the same as everywhere else in the Mediterranean (Italy, Greece). General weather forecast for the region you are about to visit plays the main role when you are considering of setting the date. If you prefer boiling under the warm sun, swimming in warm sea and light winds, taking a sailing trip in summer is your best decision.

Basically, the temperatures on Adriatic also vary from north to south. In northern parts (Istria, Kvarner) it can be extremely hot during summer months with almost no winds and average 2 or 3 strong thunderstorms a month. More to the south, a passing summer storm is less likely. Plus, there is always constant moderate wind blowing in Dalmatia in July and August.

As the temperatures during the spring rise, so does the sea temperature. In September is quite the opposite; the air can get cooler after a day or two of bora wind, while the sea temperature drop is quite insignificant. Anchoring in a secluded cove is a perfect opportunity to take a dive in a crystal water. It is advised to always check the Croatian maritime meteorological reports for small crafts to avoid unnecessary surprises while sailing.

HIGHER TEMPERATURES AND ALWAYS ENOUGH WIND IN SUMMER

If you are sensitive to heat, then you should consider taking your trip in April, May, September or October. Air temperature during the daytime in April and May can easily reach over 25 (77F). However, the sea temperature is still a bit cold 15-20 (68F).

Best season to set sails is from the middle of June until middle September. The mercury is at consistent 30 (87F) degrees, often peaking well into the 40's (104F). Pushing towards Autumn, temperatures drop to the mild 25-30 (77-86F). The sea until the end of October can still hold the temperatures high above 20 (70F) degrees.

In the summer months you will most likely have moderate thermic NW maestral winds during the day and light Burin (NE) during the night. Don't mistake Bura with Burin ! Although it has the same direction, has a different character.

Convert degrees Celsius to degrees Fahrenheit with this simple formula:

Degrees Fahrenheit = [°C] × 9 / 5 + 32

WHAT ARE THE PREVAILING WINDS ON ADRIATIC?

The prevailing winds on Adriatic are Jugo (SE), Bora (NE), Maestral (NW), Tramontana (N), Pulenat (W) and Levant (E). In the summer months you will most likely have moderate NW maestral winds during the day and light Burin (NE) during the night. Don't mistaken Bura with Burin! Although same direction, has a completely different character.

A perfect sailing day in summer:

You ususally wake up with a light thermic Burin (NE) blowing from the mainland. As the land cools down in the night, there is always light breeze blowing towards the sea. Expect dead calm air and glassy sea almaost always before noon, which is a great opportunity for a swim. Around noon a light breeze might occur mostly from southern direction, swiftly turning into a moderate NW breeze (12-18 Knots) called the Maestral. Which is the strongest in the late afternoon hours and will completely diminish before dusk.

Maestral wind will always blow as the sun moves during the day, especially when high pressure field is over the Europe. Which is a good prediction for sunny weather for at least 3-4 days ahead.

Always respect the mighty Bora wind!

Croatia weather can be quite tricky though. Mostly due to the closeness of mountain barriers, a light summer NW "Maestral" breeze from the seas, can easily turn into near gale force "Bura" winds from the NE mainland. If "Bura" warning is issued - don't push your luck, there are many sailors that tried, and got "burned". Even though it only happens rarely in summer and more often in September then in June. Please remebmer to monitor the weather warnings to avoid surprices!

WHAT ARE THE MARINA COSTS IN CROATIA?

Port fees start at 40€/night for a 45 foot boat (8 persons) and it can go up to 120€ in some higher ranked marinas (Split, Hvar, Dubrovnik). Basically the prices depend on the boat length and the quality of marina /port service. ACI marina fee is app. 30% higher then in small ports. Price usually includes fresh water refill, shore power, toilet and bathroom facilities. Buoy charge ranges from 30-40€. Anchoring is free of charge. In our experience, a mixture of above options gives the best balance through the week for most sailors.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO RENT A ONE WAY-CHARTER?

We also offer one-way trips on our bareboat charter. One Way options (Split - Dubrovnik & Zadar - Split or vice versa) are available. Please also note, that one way fee is extra 250-350 Euros with re-fueling included. One-Way itineraries do not include port fee at disembarkation. We ask all our passengers to disembark by 11:00 am on Friday, to allow enough time for our skipper to return the yacht back to the base marina.

Bareboat Charter

Bareboat charter is one of the most popular forms of exploring the Adriatic coast with more than 1200 islands along the Croatian coastline. Bareboat charter is considered chartering s boat with no crew and means you are responsible for the boat and your group and is the opportunity to spend vacation with your family or closest friends completely relying on your own competence in navigation, thus being responsible for the safety of all. It has become the top choice among tourists all over the world.

You actively take role in arranging your own itinerary. Still you can accept some other suggestions from base manager or our skippers. Provided you have enough experience, you are in charge of the boat yourself, with no skipper as guide. It is a challenging adventure indeed.

In this case you need an International Certificate of Competence (competence in navigation). The VHF certificate is also required for reasons of safety (the use and operation of VHF radio). You will find a wide range of boats available for bareboat charter, usually up to 50 feet. All the boats, both sailing and motor ones, are equipped with all the essentials as well as with safety and navigational equipment to make your navigation simpler and easier. Here is the list of license that are accepted in Croatia: certificate.pdf If someone from your group does not possess a valid nautical license, no charter company in Croatia will give you the boat without a crew even if you have a lot of experience. Have in mind that you are entirely responsible of the keeping and sailing of the boat and for the safety of your group. During your check in ask our base manager all the questions that interest you besides the ones he was briefing you about.

What Licence is Required to Rent a Boat in Croatia?

Croatia is a great destination for bareboat charters. Thanks to its warm weather and calm wind, this country has close to perfect sailing conditions. It is ideal for beginning sailors who wish to gain some experience in operating a boat and for those who simply want to enjoy a calm and pleasant bareboat charter. But what are the boat license requirements in Croatia? Let’s take a closer look and answer this question.

Legal Requirements

According to Croatian law, to operate a boat you must have a valid Nautical (skipper’s licence) and VHF licence. In addition to that, you must be over 18 years old and have all the necessary sailing experience.

In Croatia, skipper and VHF licences are issued by the port authorities. To get your license, you must pass an exam that includes practical and theoretical assessments. If you already have your licences from a country other than Croatia, please check whether it is valid for Croatian territorial waters. If you wish to hire a bareboat yacht charter, please send a copy of your licence to your GlobeSailor’s advisor, who will consult you on the validity of your documents and will assist you with further steps. You should also fill out the nautical CV where you will indicate your past experiences of boat operation.

On the day of your charter, you must have the original documents with you. Croatian law strictly regulates bareboat charters and exceptions cannot be made.
