The Boot

Kenny Chesney Extolls the Virtues of Boating

When Kenny Chesney has a little time off the road or from the recording studio, he is most likely out on the water in one of his boats. In fact, he recorded a song titled ' Boats ' for his ' Lucky Old Sun ' album, and it includes the lines, "vessels of freedom/harbors of healing," which is very apropos to how he feels when he's riding the waves.

"That line came from a gentleman and his daughter I met in St. Croix," Kenny explains in the June issue of Boating magazine. "I think anybody who has a boat has an emotional attachment to it. It has a way of healing a person and gives him a sense of freedom. That's where I feel the most freedom -- and it's helped me heal something that needed healing."

Kenny currently has two Sea Rays, a 56- and a 60-footer, although he admits he's a little bit more fond of the 60-foot boat. One of his favorite boating memories is right after he purchased his first vessel.

"My manager and some buddies and I left Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., says the superstar. "The idea was to drive as far as we could toward the Virgin Islands. We made it farther, all the way to Georgetown in the Cayman Islands. It was a very peaceful time, [and] I had a lot of people I loved with me."

When he has some time to spend on his boat near his beloved islands, Kenny says the day usually involves "a little bit of suntan oil, a whole lot of music, and at 2 o'clock it's usually a cold beer out of the cooler. At some point a guitar comes out, and I either write a song or I don't."

Kenny takes his love for boats to a new level by raising awareness and funds for the Coastal Conservation Association with a line of sunglasses he helped design with Costa Del Mar . The limited edition sunglasses are available in five styles named after some of Kenny's songs, including 'Poets and Pirates' and 'No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems.' They feature hand-drawn artwork etched inside the frames and are available during each stop of Kenny's Goin' Coastal tour. Kenny wanted to have a hand in the designs, because they reflect the lifestyle he and his fans live: the sun, the water and most definitely, the attitude.

The next stop on Kenny's Goin' Coastal tour is Friday (May 20) in Atlanta, Ga.

Kenny Chesney Come Over Lyrics

I turned the TV off, to turn it on again Staring at the blades of the fan as it spins around Counting every crack, the clock is wide awake Talking to myself, anything to make a sound I told you I wouldn’t call, I told you I wouldn’t care But baby, climbing the walls gets me nowhere I don’t think that I can take this bed getting any colder Come over, come over, come over, come over, come over You can say we’re done the way you always do It’s easier to lie to me than to yourself Forget about your friends, you know they’re gonna say We’re bad for each other, but we ain’t good for anyone else I told you I wouldn’t call, I told you I wouldn’t care But baby, climbing the walls gets me nowhere I don’t think that I can take this bed getting any colder Come over, come over, come over, come over, come over We don’t have to miss each other, come over We don’t have to fix each other, come over We don’t have to say forever, come over You don’t have to stay forever, come over I told you I wouldn’t call, I told you I wouldn’t care But baby, climbing the walls gets me nowhere I don’t think that I can take this bed getting any colder Come over, come over, come over, come over, come over Come over, come over, come over, come over, come over Come over, come over, come over, come over, come over (whoa, whoa, whoa) (Whoa, whoa, whoa) (Whoa, whoa, whoa) (Whoa, whoa, whoa)

The Inside Scoop on Kenny Chesney’s “Knowing You” Video

The Inside Scoop on Kenny Chesney’s “Knowing You” Video

Good Morning!  Kenny Chesney released his “Knowing You” music video today and I wanted to share a bit about the people, and the boat, involved in this video….The following is a sneak peek into a more in depth, upcoming interview with the video cast and sailing crew aboard the featured vessel, Kai.

Last summer, my boyfriend Teddy and I were invited to sail north from Puerto Rico to Connecticut on the amazingly beautiful sailing vessel, Kai .  Captain Justin Smith and First Mate Sarah Ford are long time friends of Teddy’s and had extended to him their need for company, and experienced sailors, to assist on this 1500 nautical mile voyage in July.

In the early months of the pandemic and with a desperation to see my family, we discussed it and I agreed to also come along (Although I AM NOT an experienced sailor. Ha!).  So, we sailed Teddy’s boat Asante to Puerto Rico in early July to meet up with Kai and her crew and make ready for the 8-12 day off-shore voyage.  It was one of the most nerve wracking, and best, decisions I have ever made.  The sail north was fair winds and beautiful seas filled with dolphins and whales, sunrises and sunsets, and millions of memories.

After four months in a marina in Connecticut and a boatyard in Gloucester, the beautiful sailboat with a brand new paint job made its way back to the territory on a grueling, into the wind journey through the outer bands of Hurricane Eta.  But they pushed on, knowing they had a schedule to keep.  Just before the crew left the states, they received a call that Kenny would be shooting his next music video on St. Croix mid-November.  And he was looking for a sailboat.

The video was partially shot in Gloucester.  Coincidental, because Kai had been in the boatyard getting an incredible facelift in that same little quaint New England fishing town during the month of September.

The other half of the video was shot in St. Croix, much of it aboard Kai with a co-star that is a long time resident of St. John.  And, a beautiful face that you may recognize if you have frequented some dining establishments in Love City.

For now, I’ll leave you to viewing this latest release from a guy who sings tales about this little rock that we call home and donated millions of dollars and man hours to the response and recovery of St. John after Irma.  But, next week, I’ll be doing a sit down with the cast and crew from the video on Sailing Vessel Kai .  So, enjoy the video and check back in about a week for some insider sneak peeks about the boat and working with Kenny!

Excellent – Thank you

Beautiful Song

Beautiful… I took time at work today to watch the MV; & parts of the MV reminded me of our marriage – 27th wedding anniversary (plus an additional 13) today… it moved me in a special way… thank you, Kenny and avid fans alike… ❤️

What a wonderful story! Thanks for sharing! My love for Kenny, his music, and St John runs deep! This video is definitely one of my favorites from him!

Wow, beautiful……

My close friend and neighbor just died from cancer and this song just struck a chord with me (so to speak), made me sob like a baby!

I listen to NSR frequently. Ok, most ever day. And I have been trying to get to St. John since April, 2020. My two friends and I had a 12 day trip planned which included 5 days on a Moorings catamaran and 5 days based at a villa on St. John. We moved the trip to April of 2021 and then again to April of 2022. I watched the video when it came out last week. Wonderful imagery to match the mood and poetry of the song. And now I see this article. I won’t wish time away. So, I choose to savor every day that I am able to anticipate our trip in April 2022 and will continue to listen to NSR and check in with “News of St. John”. Thank you. See you soon!

Love this video. I have watched it at least a dozen times and not just because my sweet, beautiful niece, Monica is in it. The scenary is amazing.

This video captures the beauty of Gloucester..My husband grew up in the Eastern Point Lighthouse and his love for that place runs so so deep. His parents actually lived on Thatcher’s Island for some time too…My huband’s father was in the Coast Guard and was the lighthouse keeper to both…How cool is that??? To see this video reminds just how much I love HOME and want to keep her from becoming like every other place…She is perfect the way she is….. Kenny Chesney must see something really special in her too! Thank you Kenny Chesney for capturing a glimpse of Gloucester’s natural beauty to share with “no shoes nation”….:)

Love, love, love!!Kenny Chesney is an amazing artist and person!!! Thank you for sharing!!

Thanks Hillary for sharing! I can’t wait to get there❤️

reminds me of things i would say to my wife who passed 18 mos ago love u for that kenny

Love me some Kenny… I’m just an old (66) East TN boy from Chuckey,TN. Kenny used to play at the Chuckey Trading Co. while he was in College (ETSU). I’m an ETSU alumni as well; 1985. My best friend and I were fortunate to have spent 31 days on St John in 1983. We stayed in Cinnamon Bay Campground for two weeks and then stayed on a sailboat moored up in Cruz Bay. This was all prior to Kenny’s upcoming fame. I’m now a NSR Radio fanatic and every single day I relate several songs to my stay in St John. One of these days I hope to get back and re-live some of those great days… maybe look up Kenny! Love to all and cherish every day!

Kenny Chesney’s Enduring Love Affair with St. John, USVI: A Harmonious Connection Beyond Music

Nestled within the azure waters of the Caribbean lies a gem of an island – St. John, US Virgin Islands. Known for its pristine beaches, lush greenery, and vibrant culture, this paradise has captured the hearts of many. Among its admirers stands a figure whose affinity for the island goes beyond its natural beauty and into the realm of personal connection – Kenny Chesney.

For Kenny Chesney, St. John is more than just a vacation destination; it’s a sanctuary, a muse, and a place where he finds solace amidst the chaos of fame. Born on March 26, 1968, in Knoxville, Tennessee, Chesney rose to prominence as a country music superstar, earning numerous awards and accolades for his soulful tunes and captivating performances. However, amidst the glitz and glamour of the entertainment industry, he found himself drawn to the tranquility of St. John.

a person flying through the air

Kenny Chesney and his guitar in St. John

Chesney’s journey with St. John began in the late 1990s when he first visited the island during a sailing trip in the Caribbean. Instantly enamored by its charm, he felt a profound connection that would shape the course of his life in the years to come. The pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and laid-back vibe offered him a refuge from the demands of his career, allowing him to unwind and recharge his spirit.

As Chesney’s affinity for St. John grew, so did his involvement in the local community. He became a passionate advocate for environmental conservation and sustainable living, recognizing the importance of preserving the island’s natural beauty for future generations. Through his philanthropic efforts, he supported various initiatives aimed at protecting the marine ecosystem, restoring coral reefs, and promoting eco-friendly practices.

Beyond his philanthropy, Chesney forged deep friendships with the locals, immersing himself in the island’s culture and embracing its traditions. He frequented local bars and restaurants, where he could often be found jamming with local musicians or simply enjoying a cold beer and a plate of fresh seafood. His down-to-earth demeanor and genuine appreciation for the island endeared him to the community, earning him the nickname “the Mayor of St. John” among locals.

Chesney’s bond with St. John is perhaps most evident in his music, where the island serves as a recurring theme and source of inspiration. Many of his songs are imbued with references to the Caribbean lifestyle, from the swaying palm trees to the salty breeze, painting a vivid picture of his love affair with St. John. Tracks like “Island Boy” and “Pirate Flag” capture the carefree spirit of island living, while ballads like “No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems” evoke the laid-back vibe that permeates the island.

In 2017, Chesney’s connection to St. John was put to the test when the island was devastated by Hurricane Irma, one of the most powerful storms ever recorded in the Atlantic. Witnessing the destruction wrought upon his beloved paradise, Chesney sprang into action, rallying his fans and fellow celebrities to support the relief efforts. Through his foundation, Love for Love City, he raised millions of dollars for the rebuilding process, providing much-needed aid to the island’s residents and restoring hope in the face of adversity.

In the aftermath of the hurricane, Chesney’s bond with St. John only deepened as he witnessed the resilience and strength of its people in the face of tragedy. Determined to help the island recover and thrive once again, he poured his heart and soul into rebuilding efforts, spearheading initiatives to restore infrastructure, support local businesses, and revitalize the tourism industry.

Today, St. John stands as a testament to Chesney’s enduring love and dedication. The scars of Hurricane Irma have faded, replaced by a renewed sense of hope and optimism for the future. Chesney continues to be a beloved figure on the island, welcomed with open arms whenever he returns to his tropical paradise.

The heart of St. John, Cruz Bay

In the heart of the Caribbean, where the rhythm of the waves meets the melody of the breeze, Kenny Chesney found more than just a destination – he found a home. Through his music, philanthropy, and unwavering commitment, he has woven himself into the fabric of St. John’s identity, forever leaving his mark on the island and its people. As the sun sets over the horizon, casting its golden glow upon the turquoise waters, one thing remains certain – Kenny Chesney and St. John, USVI, share a bond that transcends time and distance, a harmonious connection that will endure for generations to come.

LIVE A LITTLE, LOVE A LOT

“How the Virgin Islands Influences Kenny’s Music”

How the Virgin Islands influenced Kenny Chesney’s music and what he say’s about being called a “Caribbean Cowboy”

By Dave Herndon

September 2005

Country music’s hottest artist trades his sexy tractor for a blue chair on the beach and scores a number-one album.

A snowy blast of winter air blows a slight, slacker-looking guy into a television studio dressing room. He strips off a tired old shirt from Woody’s Seafood Saloon in Cruz Bay, St. John, and replaces it with a bright tie-dyed tee. Baggies give way to jeans, a stocking cap comes off and a palm-leaf cowboy hat goes on — and that quickly, the island bum transforms into the Nashville superstar. Such is the ease with which Kenny Chesney bridges the seemingly apples-to-oranges styles of the Caribbean and mainstream country & western. As he warms up before his live prime-time Saturday-night special on Country Music Television, it occurs to Chesney that the show will have particular meaning to a certain slice of the millions expected to tune in. “I know all my friends down in St. John are going to be havin’ a party and watching, ‘cause they know all the songs are about them. And I’m sure Foxy’s gonna be watchin’,” he says, giving a nod to legendary bar owner/impresario Foxy Callwood from Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands. Onstage, the mood set by the backdrop of a magenta sunset framed by palm trees, Chesney introduces cuts from his new album Be As You Are (Songs From an Old Blue Chair). The songs are full of fond references to piña coladas, tiki bars and the shaggy appeal of island life as lived by his friends — expats, boaties and barkeepers, mainly. Caribbean way of life Such tunes, some with calypso steel drums and reggae-lite rhythms, have been a growing component of Chesney’s repertoire for the last few years. This album, though, represents a full-blown case of island fever. His trademark hook-heavy hot-country sound is shelved to make room for a melodic, gently twangy brand of balladry that goes down easy as a sunset. Chesney auditioned his own rough mixes by listening to them on his boat to make sure they had just the right feeling. The album hit number one on the Billboard 200 its first week — the latest winner in a rampant Caribbean-Country trend.

“Jimmy always had a country soul to him,” says Chesney over lunch the day after his CMT show. “‘Come Monday’ was a country song, and ‘A Pirate Looks at 40’ is a story song like most country songs are stories. Jimmy moved into it naturally, and I was proud to be a part of his record.” But Chesney is eager to put a bit of distance between himself and the pack. He doesn’t want to be taken for an opportunistic Parrothead wannabe — he’s not a tourist, he’s a local now. “I don’t want people to think this is a weekend with Jimmy Buffett, nor  do I want to be called a Caribbean Cowboy” he says. Yes, he’s sensitive to the issue of influence when it comes to Buffett. “We have a lot in common in the way we live our lives,” says Chesney, “and when I listen to his earlier records I see he was a dreamer, too. But as much as I love him, he’s got nothing to do with my new album. “Look, I realize ultimately people are going to compare this record to his,” Chesney continues, “but it’s so much about me and my feelings and a life-changing period I’ve been through. I wrote these songs about people I know with kind hearts and deep souls. I’m setting their lives to music. I’m not just listening to ‘Margaritaville’ on a boat for a weekend. This is not a case of trying to steal style points.” So does that mean we’re not going to see a chain of Kennyville tiki bars opening up any time soon? The idea has been floated. “I never say never,” says Chesney, “but I’m not ready to commercialize myself that much just yet. That would take a little bit of the heart out of it for me.” Chesney’s Caribbean journey began during vacations with his former fiancée to Grand Cayman, which is a place now and forever tainted by those painful associations. It inspired a song called “I Can’t Go There” from the 2002 album No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems. And it was his quest for a fresh place in the sun that brought him to St. John in the U.S. Virgins. “I was running from insecurities and a love affair,” he says, “and chasing something — peace or resolve. And one reason I fit in on St. John is that I saw a lot of commonality. There are a lot of people down there in the same boat, emotionally.” Same boat, perhaps, but they probably don’t commute to the islands by Lear jet. The folks who populate Chesney’s Caribbean songs include dropouts living off the tourist trade, like the harborside shopgirl from “Boston” and the bartending subject of “Sherry’s Living in Paradise.” Chesney first visited St. John with his father for a brief vacation, then took his whole band down for a month, making friends with the people who, he says, showed him a different way to live. “There’s beaches all over the Caribbean,” he says, “but the people there made me feel at home, made me feel like a local.” Though his island dream house is still in the dreaming stage, as often as he can Chesney occupies a hillside four-bedroom Mediterranean-style villa with open walls and a “killer view” of the Virgin Islands. The most important piece of furniture is the subject of a song he says is his most personal, “Old Blue Chair.” In case you missed it on his last album (When the Sun Goes Down, the CMA Album of the Year), the chair shows up in the subtitle and in the first track of Be As You Are (Songs From an Old Blue Chair), and again at the end, with a reprise version recorded seaside last summer in the BVIs complete with the sounds of sloshing surf. He wrote the song after a night of partying with houseguest Peyton Manning, star quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts.

“I’ve read a lot of books, wrote a few songs Looked at my life, where it’s goin’, where it’s gone I’ve seen the world through a bus windshield, but nothin’ compares To the way that I see it When I sit in that old blue chair”

6e7ab8ae087d75d38ffddb457f47c25d

“One New Year’s Eve when I was in my soul-searching period,” recalls Chesney, “I went out and sat in that chair with a big drink between my legs. I looked up at the infinite stars and fell asleep — or passed out, whatever you want to call it. What woke me was the sun coming up over Tortola. It had rained a lot, and the mosquitoes were horrible; I must’ve had 200 bites all over my body. Right then I decided I was going to make myself happy and move on and put my heart and soul into my music and into being a better person. “Is that what you call an epiphany?” he wonders aloud. No, that’s what you call a hangover; it’s only an epiphany when you act on it and it becomes a turning point. Which he did. Chesney rededicated himself to competing in the bare-knuckle brawl that is the Nashville music industry, but tempered his ambitions with an accepting perspective learned from his Virgin Island buds. He took inspiration from a friend named Ben (the subject of the song “Island Boy”), who “left Maine, sold everything he had, looked at a spot on the map and went to it.” From that, Chesney learned that while it’s risky to follow your bliss, doing so can take you to places where you really belong. “Now I let my heart take me where it wants to go,” he says, echoing a line from the chorus of “Soul of a Sailor.” “That’s the essence of the islands and why I love it.” Ben is now the captain of Chesney’s new boat, a 60-foot Sea Ray. Together they cruise the islands, stopping at spots like Ivan’s Stress-Free Bar on Jost Van Dyke. It’s one of those places where you can just walk up and make your own drinks, pitch a tent and stay for a few days, a week, a month. “When I think of the Caribbean, Ivan’s is where my mind goes,” Chesney says. “It’s got a great vibe. Ivan is a kind, warm person from the West Indies, in his 60s. He’s a musician and he loves musicians. I’ve learned to look at the world differently there, how to pace my life. My view is through a tour-bus window; his view is of the tide coming in and going out.” Ivan’s is one of several such bars mentioned in Chesney’s songs.

“There’s an unseen magic in those places that can be life-changing, and I’m living proof of it,” he says. “You can lose yourself and find yourself and reinvent yourself.” Such a true believer is Chesney in the transforming power of island vibes that he feels compelled to share what he’s discovered not only with his crew, whom he transports down there en masse at the end of each long, grueling tour (he sold 1.2 million tickets last year, more than anyone but Prince), but also with his fans. “I want to bottle up all of it and take it on the road,” he says. That would explain Marley, the 265-pound blue marlin he caught off the Northern Drop in the BVIs that goes on tour (in a custom case that cost 10 grand) and sits at the side of the stage as a talisman for the team. “In my live show people really connect with the whole vibe,” says Chesney, who used to use Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds” as his intro music. “It’s not just a song on the radio.” An inevitable consequence of his Caribbean fixation is that Chesney fans are increasingly taking vacations to the Virgin Islands. “They’re following in droves,” he says. “It’s double-edged. I want them to buy into the lifestyle, but there used to be a time I could dance on the bar and howl at the moon. There are too many cameras now. Thank God I got a boat and there’s a lot of little islands.” He still likes to howl, though, at the drop of his old straw hat. “After I played the University of Tennessee with Kid Rock two summers ago, the two of us got on my bus, stopped at Krystal for 20 burgers, went to the airport, got on my plane, flew to the Virgin Islands, got on my boat and went to the BVIs. The night after we played for 65,000 people at UT we played four hours for 60 or 100 people at Foxy’s. We played all his stuff, all my stuff and every Marley song we knew.” For all the carrying-on and the spontaneous tiki bar gigs, the islands are primarily a place for Chesney to decompress, get away from music for a while and read. In the grand tradition of Caribbean literature, he says Old Man and the Sea is his favorite Hemmingway book (“reminds me of my grandfather”), and it’s recently prompted him to catch up on To Have and Have Not. But there comes a time during the long vacations when he can’t resist picking up the guitar. Be As You Are is his first singer-songwriter album, a scrapbook of tunes that he says were never even meant to be recorded, much less released as a theme album. However, one of the fruits of achieving success on Nashville’s terms by producing monster hits like “She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy” is that you eventually get to share the stuff that’s a bit closer to your heart, more about where you’re really coming from. “It used to be my home away from home,” says the Tennessee native of his Virgin Islands getaway, “but now it’s my home more than anyplace else. Without the island lifestyle I wouldn’t have the energy or the inspiration to accomplish what I have. Being able to shift gears has given me clarity and focus. The people, the boat, the bars, the fishermen, the music, the blue chair, the rum — everything helped make that happen.” On that tidy note, the luncheon interview concludes and Chesney cracks open his fortune cookie: “A much-needed vacation will bring a great deal of enjoyment.” But he already knew that.

Kenny Chesney Opens Up About the Story Behind "Better Boat"

kenny chesney sea ray yacht

Kenny Chesney   recently released his latest album, Songs For The Saints , and now the country star is opening up about one of the record's many special tracks, "Better Boat."

"At its core, 'Better Boat' is dealing with this inner struggle with ourselves that we all have, and trying to find a certain peace within ourselves, about ourselves," he explains in a recently uploaded video. "It's a song about self-evaluation and trying to be, just, better. We all go through things in our lives—some we're proud of, some we're not so proud of. I think it's about growing up, it's about moving forward."

Though Chesney didn't write the song, he feels the human element in it and, like the other songs on the album, relates it to the tragic Hurricanes Irma and Maria that devastated his home in the Virgin Islands , which sparked the inspiration for his latest collection of songs.

"If there's one emotion...this song talks about the helplessness of all of it," he admits, "and how you just have to put it in God's hands and it's going to come out like it comes out."

The 50-year-old recruited Mindy Smith   for this track and thinks she was the perfect addition.

"She brings calm," he states. "She brings a sense that it's all gonna be all right, that everything's okay, to me. When I hear her voice, it's like an angel. Her voice is so genreless. It's bigger than all of us, I think. As I believe this moment is."

Anyone interested in meeting in up Detroit for Kenny Chesney? Saturday August 18th at Ford Field at 4:30pm. Kenny Chesney, Tim McGraw and Grace Potter. This should be a great show. Kenny is always great and if you have not heard of Grace Potter do a quick search. We are staying at William Milliken State Park and Harbor which is the old St Albins Harbor. We have not stayed here in several years but the area is supposed to be improved. The Marina takes reservations and is a short taxi ride from the stadium. We will be southbound from the North Channel and plan to arrive Friday evening or by Noon Saturday and head over to the stadium around 5pm after some tailgaiting. Tickets are just about sold out but all levels are available on StubHub.

When I bought my bought the previous owner left a bunch of CD's on the boat and most were Kenny Chesney, not being much of a fan of Country I told one of the guys I work with he could have all the CD's. On the way to work I plugged in one of his CD's and could not believe what I was missing. I have been trying to talk the Admiral into going (not much of a Country fan either). Watched some of his concerts on Youtube and now I really want to go!

Kick back with Kenny Chesney’s Boat Captain Ben cocktail

With summer right around the corner,  Kenny Chesney ‘s showing fans how to make his Boat Captain Ben cocktail.

“Hey everybody, it’s Kenny. I am on a day off in the middle of the I Go Back Tour and there is not a cloud in the sky, and I’m just sitting here in the sun, having some fun, and I’m going to make what is called a Boat Captain Ben,” Kenny says in the opening of his  Twitter video,  before making the cocktail.

The recipe’s pretty simple. All you need is a bottle of Kenny’s Blue Chair Bay Coconut Rum and a can of sugar-free Red Bull. While Kenny mixes and sips the drink in his “mama’s fish house cup,” you, of course, are welcome to enjoy it from your cup of choice.

Fans can follow along by watching Kenny’s video and get a bottle of the Blue Chair Bay Coconut Rum at  bluechairbayrum.com .
