- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).

Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. Comfort Ratio

Yacht arrangement
The 82m O’Mega built to the highest SOLAS standards. The yacht was initially built in 1985 by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Co. Ltd., and underwent a total re-construction in its hull and superstructure features in 2004 by Golden Yachts. In order to be able to guarantee the highest seaworthiness and safety, all of the machinery and auxiliaries were fully overhauled and all necessary inspections were approved by Bureau Veritas Classification Society. Moreover, the remaining technological equipment and machinery were also replaced in order to ensure that the yacht had nothing to envy from a total new building. This former passenger vessel was converted into a majestic mega yacht that has managed to set a class of its own guaranteeing guest safety without compromising comfort and elegance.
The O’Mega’s gracious interior by Giorgio Vafiadis is fitted with mahogany paneling, built-in furniture, custom made linens, carpets, and handmade fabrics; all of which are Italian made. All areas are distinctly decorated with the finest materials as well as highest quality marbles throughout. The main deck is comprised of a large exterior seating area, a spacious salon, dining area, conference room, gymnasium, and five double and five twin en-suite staterooms all equipped with LCD screens, DVD’s, and surround system entertainment. The upper deck features another outdoor dining area and bar, a salon and piano bar, a full width owner’s stateroom, and four VIP suites. The fifth VIP cabin with a panoramic view is located on the Bridge Deck. The sun deck of O’Mega, featuring two spacious sunbathing areas, a large jacuzzi, and a bar, is the place to be onboard.

“It’s Labor Day. Families are getting together … Going to the beach … going to barbecues, festivals. But not these families,” began Jennifer Homendy, chair of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
September 2 remains a stark reminder of the day 34 individuals died in a fire aboard the dive boat Conception five years ago. This year’s anniversary landed exactly on Labor Day Monday — the same day the tragedy occurred — for the first time since the 2019 disaster.
Family, friends, and first responders gathered at the Conception Memorial stone at Point Castillo on Santa Barbara’s waterfront this Labor Day to remember their loved ones and call for more safety regulations for passenger vessels.
“This was the worst marine disaster NTSB has investigated since it was established,” emphasized Homendy, who was on the scene with the NTSB in 2019. “The worst.”
The boat’s captain, Jerry Boylan, was legally required to assign a crew member to be a “roving night watch” when he led a group of passengers around the Channel Islands for an overnight diving trip. He neglected to do so, and a fire that began while everyone was asleep overtook the boat rapidly. Boylan and four crew members jumped ship. Everyone else on board — all 33 passengers and one crew member — died. Boylan has been sentenced to four years in prison for “seaman’s manslaughter,” but remains out on bail pending appeal.
The NTSB, who investigated the fire, issued recommendations to the U.S. Coast Guard to improve safety on small passenger vessels as a direct result of the Conception incident. While they’ve acted on some, Homendy said, they have failed to provide information on enforcement plans and have not implemented stricter “Safety Management Systems” for passenger vessels.
“How many deaths have to occur? How many families have to stand up here … grieving for their loved ones before action is taken?” Homendy asked. “This is the cost.”
Vicki Moore, who lost her daughter and husband in the fire, said it best. “This was absolutely not an accident. This was a disaster simply waiting to happen.”

ID Released For 34-Year-Old From Westbrook Killed In Old Saybrook Boating Accident
The identity has been released of a young man killed in a boating accident in Connecticut as authorities continue their search for two missing people.
The search continues for two missing victims of a boat crash in Old Saybrook.

The incident occurred in Middlesex County in Old Saybrook on Long Island Sound around 9:15 p.m., Monday, Sept. 2.
According to Will Healey, spokesman for the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Police, multiple agencies responded and found a single motorboat floating, half-submerged, near the Harbor One Marina in Old Saybrook.
A total of nine people were on the boat. An adult male was recovered dead, and six people were transported to the hospital, Healey said.
"There was significant damage to the boat, which hit the east-facing jetty at the mouth of the Connecticut River," said Healey.
The person found dead has been identified as Middlesex County resident Christopher Hallahan, age 34, of Westbrook, Healey said.
The group was returning from a day on Block Island when the crash occurred, DEEP. officials said.
Officials did not say if the boaters were wearing life vests.
The search for two missing adult males resumed at 8 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 4.

Review of Omega 34
Basic specs..
Both the hull and the deck is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. The deck is a double deck which improves the indoor climate.
The interior is like most other boats made of teak. Teak has the advantage of being naturally very oily and therefore water-repellent, which is suitable on boats. The boat is equipped with 3 cabins, 6 berths, a galley, 65.0 liter fresh water capacity, toilet facility and 60.0 liter waste water capacity. Note: the boat has also been sold to be self-made/-interiored, which means that the quality of each boat may vary.
The boat equipped with a fractional rig. A fractional rig has smaller headsails which make tacking easier, which is an advantage for cruisers and racers, of course. The downside is that having the wind from behind often requires a genaker or a spinnaker for optimal speed.
The Omega 34 is equipped with a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel.
The keel is made of iron. Many people prefer lead keel in favour of iron. The main argument is that lead is much heavier than iron and a lead keel can therefore be made smaller which again result in less wet surface, i.e. less drag. In fact iron is quite heavy, just 30% less heavy than lead, so the advantage of a lead keel is often overstated. As the surface of a fin type keel is just a fraction of the total wet surface, the difference between an iron keel and a lead keel can in reality be ignored for cruising yachts.
Omega 34 can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.63 - 1.73 meter (5.35 - 5.65 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.
The boat is typically equipped with an inboard Yanmar diesel engine at 15 hp (11 kW). The speed is 6.5 knots.
The transmission is a shaft drive. A shaft drive will in the long run require less maintenance than other types of drive e.g. a sail drive.
The fuel tank, which is made of stainless steel, has a capacity of 50.0 liters (13 US gallons, 10 imperial gallons).
Sailing characteristics

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?
The capsize screening value for Omega 34 is 1.83, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.
What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?
The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 7.1 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.
The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Omega 34 is about 170 kg/cm, alternatively 956 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 170 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 956 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.
