The Ocean Race 2023, 6 key points to understand the round the world sailing race

round the world yacht race 2023 alicante

The start of The Ocean Race 2023 will take place on January 15 from Alicante, Spain. 11 boats are taking part in this new edition, which now includes two different classes. It is with a crew that they will carry out a journey across the oceans, with stopovers. We explain you everything!

Chloé Torterat

One of the most difficult crewed races

The Ocean Race is often described as one of the longest and most challenging crewed offshore races. Many of the world's best sailors have spent years of their careers in it. For the record , Sir Peter Blake , participated in the first edition of what was then the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1973-74. He returned to the race every year before finally winning the Grail in 1989-1990 with Steinlager 2.

A 14th edition for The Ocean Race

This is the 14th edition of the round the world race with stopovers. It takes place 500 years after the first round-the-world race carried out during the Magellan expedition and 50 years after the first edition of the race in 1973-1974. Named the Whitbread Round the World Race at its inception, it retained its name until 1998 before being renamed the Volvo Ocean Race from 2001 to 2018. Originally held every four years, it has been held every three years since the 2008-2009 edition.

On January 8th, the 5 IMOCA and 6 VO65 will participate in the In-port race in Alicante before the big start on January 15th.

A crewed race inspired by a solo round-the-world race

Guy Pearce and Anthony Churchill, inspired by Robin Knox Johnston's single-handed circumnavigation of the globe in the 1969 Sunday Times Golden Globe Race , presented the idea of a crewed race around the world to Admiral Otto Steiner of the British Royal Naval Sailing Association . He convinced Colonel Bill Whitbread to sponsor the adventure , known as the Whitbread Round The World Race. The first edition in 1973 welcomed 19 boats and 167 sailors, for 4 legs starting from Portsmouth with stopovers in Cape Town, Sydney, and Rio de Janeiro.

In its early days, the race was "rustic". The refrigerators were filled with fresh meat, the boats were comfortable and some teams even took a cook with them. This first edition will be marked by three deaths. Three others will lose their lives during the following editions.

Two classes of boats for the 2023 edition

For the first time, after a test bench on The Ocean Race Europe in 2021 the Ocean Race will host two classes of boats. We will of course find the VO65s that have participated in the last two editions of the round the world race. Each time the level was tight, so much so that during the last edition, three teams took the start of the last stage with equal points in the general ranking. In the end, it was the Chinese team Dongfeng Race Team, led by Charles Caudrelier , who snatched victory from the Spanish and Dutch teams MAPFRE and Team Brunel, just a few miles before the finish in The Hague, Netherlands.

The newcomers are none other than the ultra-technological IMOCA boats, initially designed for the Vendée Globe, a single-handed round-the-world race.

La flotte des VO65

7 stages for a total of 31,300 nautical miles

This 14th edition is composed of 7 offshore legs, with a start and finish in the Mediterranean, a first in the history of the race, and ocean crossings in the Atlantic, Indian, Pacific and Southern Oceans. Each start and finish of a leg is organized in a major international city. In total, the crews will stop in 8 major cities. The victory is awarded to the first to arrive. Stages 3 and 5 will count as double.

At each stopover , teams participate in an in-port race, as well as a series of pro-am races with guests on board. Although the in-port series do not add points to the overall standings, they are still important in case of ties in the overall results at the end of the race.

The course for this edition includes the longest leg in the race's 50-year history. Leg 3 is a 12,750-mile marathon between Cape Town, South Africa, and Itajaí, Brazil .

The VO65 one-designs will only participate in 3 legs in the northern hemisphere, the first , the sixth and the last.

For the first time, the IMOCA fleet will cross the three major southern capes: Cape of Good Hope, Cape Leeuwin and Cape Horn , non-stop.

A mixed crew

As introduced in the 2017-18 edition, the race rules encourage the formation of crews composed of men and women, as well as the training of new young talent. A total of 23 women participated in the last edition, 10 of whom were new to the race. 136 women have participated in the race since 1973.

In IMOCA , the crews will be composed of 4 to 5 people, while there will be 10 in VO65 . In each case, a mediaman will be on board to make the experience live from the inside.

The Ocean Race 2023 gets underway

Published on January 15th, 2023 by Editor -->

Alicante, Spain (January 15, 2023) – The 14th edition of The Ocean Race, the fully-crewed, around the world yacht race, got underway today for the 32,000 nm course that will take six months to finish in Genova, Italy.

Five IMOCA class yachts – the high-tech, foiling, flying race boats that are in The Ocean Race for the first time – started in glamour conditions on the waters off Alicante’s Ocean Live Park just after 16:00 local time.

Two hours earlier, a fleet of six VO65 one-design yachts set off on the first stage of their shorter, European-focused event, The Ocean Race VO65 Sprint, which features three stages of competition.

While both fleets are now racing on Leg 1 to Cabo Verde, some 1900 nautical miles away, the IMOCAs continue their race around the world, while the VO65s will pause in Cabo Verde, before rejoining the IMOCA fleet in Europe in the spring for the final two legs of their race.

round the world yacht race 2023 alicante

While the Alicante start period featured perfect January weather with warm temperatures under sunny skies, the sailors are expecting gale force westerlies overnight, with a forecast for gale-force westerlies to build overnight, with a heavy sea state making the passage to Gibraltar and the trade winds in the Atlantic a treacherous one.

With the weak weather front having passed through the race area earlier in the afternoon, the wind conditions settled at WNW 12-14 knots for the start of the five IMOCAs.

Nevertheless, as the race got under way two hours after the start of the VO65s, it was clear from the aerial view that there were still some shifts and puffs to be had.

On the water and as the start gun went it was Paul Meilhat’s brand new Biotherm (FRA) that was to set the pace, on time, at speed and on the foils. It was an impressive display, not least because last week was the first time that this crew had sailed together aboard a boat that has only recently been launched.

After a few unstable moments on the fast reach to the first mark, when the boat leaped into the air, it was clear that while the French team were fast they were not yet properly trimmed.

Behind them, hot on their heels, Kevin Escoffier’s Team Holcim-PRB (SUI) was also leaping into the air from time to time as both boats set a blistering pace.

The second leg of the inshore lap saw the fleet sail downwind. With the boats now under less load, teams were able to re-trim and re-set before the next fast leg. Seconds after Biotherm had rounded mark 3 it was clear that they had made some essential trim changes.

This time the boat was faster and better trimmed as Biotherm accelerated away on the third leg and extended their advantage over the rest of the fleet.

Meanwhile, after a disappointing start, 11th Hour Racing Team (USA) skippered by Charlie Enright hauled themselves back from last to third. Experience was showing already from a team that many have considered as the favorites.

As 11th Hour Racing Team made their charge towards the front of the fleet, Boris Herrmann’s Team Malizia (GER) had slipped out to the back but were able to pass GUYOT environnement – Team Europe (FRA/GER), skippered by Benjamin Dutreux after the French/German team had a problem with their code zero sail which forced them to press pause as they sorted the issue.

As the leaders passed through the final gate, Biotherm was hitting 29 knots in the flat water. Their advantage had already stretched out to 500m over second placed Holcim-PRB. After just 40 minutes of sailing it was an impressive performance.

Before the start, skipper Meilhat had explained how comfortable he and his crew would be with sailing the boat in a manual mode if required. Now, having performed a blistering lap of the inshore course with the tiller in his hand and sailing outside for the entire period, this was a good example of what he had meant.

Others had explained the importance of taking things carefully. But if the inshore lap had revealed anything, boat speeds regularly exceeding 30-knots as the fleet moved away from the shore and into the stronger breeze illustrated what the new world of fully crewed IMOCA racing means along with a demonstration of the relentless pace that is in store for this 1900 nm leg to Cabo Verde.

The Ocean Race (formerly Volvo Ocean Race and Whitbread Round the World Race) was initially to be raced in two classes of boats: the high-performance, foiling, IMOCA 60 class and the one-design VO65 class which has been used for the last two editions of the race.

However, only the IMOCAs will be racing round the world while the VO65s will race in The Ocean Race VO65 Sprint which competes in Legs 1, 6, and 7 of The Ocean Race course.

Additionally, The Ocean Race also features the In-Port Series with races at seven of the course’s stopover cities around the world which allow local fans to get up close and personal to the teams as they battle it out around a short inshore course.

Although in-port races do not count towards a team’s overall points score, they do play an important part in the overall rankings as the In-Port Race Series standings are used to break any points ties that occur during the race around the world.

The 14th edition of The Ocean Race was originally planned for 2021-22 but was postponed one year due to the pandemic, with the first leg starting on January 15, 2023.

The Ocean Race – Everything you need to know

round the world yacht race 2023 alicante

The crewed around the world race with stopovers has always been one of yachting’s premier ocean races and, after several delays this latest edition is set to start on 15 January 2023.

The race organisers are also running a new event designed to showcase top-flight, fully-crewed, competitive offshore racing based around northern Europe: the Ocean Race Europe.

The Ocean Race is scheduled to run every four years, with the Ocean Race Europe also planned to take place every four years, essentially allowing competition between the teams to take place every two years in one form or another.

It’s unusual for IMOCA 60s to race with more than two crew onboard.

What boats compete in The Ocean Race?

For the first time ever IMOCA 60s will be taking part in a fully crewed round the world race this year, with several teams set to take part.

The IMOCA 60 class has long been at the forefront of ocean racing and is used for the solo non-stop round the world epic, the Vendée Globe as well as a number of other premiere short handed ocean events such as the Route du Rhum and Transat Jaques Vabre .

However, the IMOCA 60s have always been designed and built with single and double handed racing in mind, so teams competing will have had to make significant changes to their semi-foiling 60 footers to make them capable of sailing with a full crew.

The IMOCAs are sailed by a complement of five crew, including an onboard reporter (OBR) that takes no part in the sailing. Each IMOCA 60 team has to include at least one female sailor.

What is The Ocean Race Sprint Cup?

Initially the intention was for two fleets to take part in The Ocean Race proper with the second fleet consisting on the one design VO65 boats used in the last edition of the Volvo Ocean Race.

However, plans have since changed and while the IMOCA 60s will complete a full lap of the planet, including seven legs to finish in Genoa, Italy, the VO65s will sail just the first and last two legs in what the organisers have called The Ocean Race VO65 Sprint Cup .

A new trophy will be awarded to the VO65 team which accumulates the best score across three legs of the race; Alicante, Spain, to Cape Verde; Aarhus, Denmark, to The Hague, the Netherlands; and The Hague to the overall finish in Genoa, Italy.

What is The Ocean Race course?

The course for The Ocean Race has a new first stopover mid-Atlantic at the Cape Verdes, before an extra long Southern Ocean leg of 12,750 miles from Cape Town, South Africa, to Itajai, Brazil. This new stage passes south of all three Great Capes and is expected to take 34 days.

After this mammoth Southern Ocean leg, the fleet then moves onto a series of much shorter legs. From Brazil they head to Newport, USA. They then cross the Atlantic to Aarhus, DEN. After that a very short hop from Aarhus to The Hague, NED fore a race from The Hague back to Genova, ITA.

Details revealed about the crewed round the world race aboard IMOCAs

Details revealed about the crewed round the world race aboard IMOCAs

the preliminary version of the Sailing Instructions for the next edition of The Ocean Race has given us an insight into this event, which will take place in 2021-2022.

Accessible to interested teams since 1st October, the preliminary version of the Sailing Instructions for the next crewed round the world race with stopovers (previously known as the Volvo Ocean Race) has given us an insight into this event, which will take place in 2021-2022. The race will include two types of boat: IMOCAs with foils (launched after 2010 and which will be sailed by five or six people) for the overall title and one-design VO65s competing for the Youth Challenge Trophy, which will reward the top youngsters.

“The Fully Crewed Around the World Race (FCAWR) is the working name for the event, which will take over from the Volvo Ocean Race (the former Whitbread Round the World Race).”  This is how the preliminary version of the Sailing Instructions begins for the next crewed round the world race with stopovers, which will be raced both on IMOCAs with foils and one-design VO65s.

“This draft document marks the first stage of many. It will allow us to open discussions with the interested teams,”  explained Antoine Mermod, President of the IMOCA class.  ”We can’t wait to continue our work with the organisers of the race to create a fantastic event. In the coming weeks and months, we will in particular be working on controlling costs, which is a key problem that needs to be discussed,”

A general idea of the calendar and the course have been revealed

While we are going to have to wait a while to find out all the details concerning the dates of the various legs and where the stopovers will take place, the preliminary Notice of Race presents the general outline. The first thing we learn is that registrations open on 11th December 2018. As for the race calendar itself, we have learnt that the first in-port races and the start of the first leg will take place in Alicante (Spain) in late autumn 2021. The race will include a maximum of nine legs. Up to eight intermediate stopovers may be organised with at least one stopover in the following countries: South America, Australia/New Zealand, Asia, the United States and Europe (where the event will finish early in the autumn of 2022).

IMOCAs launched since 2010 and fitted with foils with crews of five or six people

The teams racing aboard the IMOCAs will be competing for the overall title. Only boats launched after 2010 will be admitted and they will have to be fitted with foils and a standard wing mast.  “In a race with stopovers, because of the constraints imposed by the schedule, it is necessary to ensure the boats in the fleet are similar to each other to avoid large gaps developing at the finish. That is why we have published this rule concerning the launch date On top of that, thanks to that limit, all of the teams will be in with a chance of performing well,” explained Antoine Mermod.

For the in-port races, as for the offshore legs, the crew (excluding the media man) will be comprised of five people, including at least one woman. It will be possible to take six aboard, as long as there are at least four women on board. “Here too, we had to find the right balance,” stressed Antoine Mermod.  “Sailors from the Volvo Ocean Race wanted larger crews, while those from IMOCA racing would have liked to see fewer people on board. We think we have found the perfect compromise.”

16 to 18 IMOCAs eligible, 10 to 15 hopefully at the start

Looking at the existing IMOCAs and those currently being built, between sixteen and eighteen boats will meet the conditions to be able to compete in the 2021-2022 edition of the crewed race around the world.  “Our aim is to bring together a fleet of between ten and fifteen IMOCAs for this event,”  announced Antoine Mermod.  “We are working hand in hand with the various teams. Everyone is getting very excited and that should pay off.”

2023 Round the World Yacht Race.

round the world yacht race 2023 alicante

The Volvo round the world yacht race will start again in Alicante on the 15th Jan 2023. The boats started to arrive this weeks and final checks and test sailing.

They are in 2 classes the IMOCA and the VO65 . The start of the 14th edition of The Ocean Race will follow the Reyes holiday period in Spain, and sees the foiling IMOCA fleet departing on a 32,000 nautical mile (60,000 km) race around the world.

The first leg is a 1,900 nautical mile sprint from Alicante to Cabo Verde, the first time the Race has stopped at the African archipelago. Historically, the fleet has sailed past the islands as they head south down the Atlantic. Whilst in Cabo Verde,

The Ocean Race will take part in its famed Ocean Week, with a focus on local and international sustainability issues.

Leg 2 will start on 25 January and see the fleet racing across the equator, south to Cape Town, the 12th time the Race has stopped in the southern tip of Africa, making it the most visited stopover in this edition of the event. This will also be the first of three ‘haul-out’ stops, where the boats will be lifted from the water for maintenance.

Next up is a record-breaking leg - the longest racing distance in the 50-year history of the event - a 12,750 nautical mile, one-month marathon to Itajaí, Brazil.

In the finest tradition of The Ocean Race, this leg takes the IMOCA sailors down to the Roaring Forties and Furious Fifties of the Southern Ocean. Antarctica is to the right and the fleet will need to pass all three great southern Capes - the Cape of Good Hope, Cape Leeuwin, and Cape Horn - to port, without stopping, for the first time.

There will be another extended, haul-out stopover in Itajaí, Brazil, following this epic southern leg before racing resumes heading north, through the doldrums, across the equator and up to Newport, Rhode Island, on the east coast of the United States.

From there, the Race returns to Europe, with a transatlantic leg to Aarhus, Denmark, followed by a Fly-By of Kiel, Germany en route to a stop in The Hague, The Netherlands.

Then, it’s the final offshore leg - the Grand Finale - to Genova, Italy, for a Mediterranean finish to the race in July 2023.
