The first two hulls of the German Frers–designed Nautor’s Swan 78 were launched at the start of summer. Frers set out to design a blue-water cruiser that seemed much larger than the 78-foot length would suggest. The beamy, powerful hull with its telescopic keel gives the 78 the ability to cross oceans, but the keel can be lifted for shallow-draft ports or island anchorages. The yacht at Cannes, Kinina , was built with a custom performance package to enhance its racing abilities. The upgrades include a longer bowsprit, E-six carbon rigging, and a square-top mainsail.

Nautor’s Swan offers two interior layouts: the owner forward (OF) and owner aft (OA) layouts. The OF layout is quieter since it enjoys more privacy at the front of the yacht. It has a desk and en suite bathroom with a private shower compartment. The OA version is designed for owners who like to sail in any weather since the rear is less prone to vibration and noise. Because the hull is wider at this point, the master suite measures about 21 feet across—impressive for a 78-foot sailing yacht. Three guest cabins, all en suite, are included in both layouts. Any owner will also get Swan’s legendary fit and finish. On Kinina , the owner opted for white-treated teak and a dark wenge floor. Taupe leather details are on the tabletops and owner’s stateroom headboards.

Swan 78 Review: Nautor Swan Fast Luxury Yacht

sailing yacht 78

In the world of luxury sailboats, many models boast a unique feature – but the new Swan 78 seems to be composed solely of unique features

We had the honor of testing the newest model of the Finnish builder Nautor, in their home town of Pietarsaari in northern Finland. The day was sunny, but cold to our Mediterranean souls – until Swan 78 warmed us up. Our guide on the journey to meet the perfection was Mr. German Frers, naval designer as respected as the brand he has been honing for almost forty years. As it happened, Mr. Frers had not sailed on the finished 78 before either, which meant we got a unique opportunity to hear the very first thoughts and impressions of the experienced designer, sailor and a true fountain of yachting knowledge.

Swan’s cruiser racer

We were all joined by Mr. Vanni Galgani, the person in charge for new model development at Nautor Swan, whose ideas have been met with delight by the market. The builder debuted two units in Düsseldorf, the 78 and the ‘one size smaller’ 65, the basis, along with model 54, of their future commercial strategy, both developed according to Mr. Galgani’s vision.

Taking the steering wheel, Mr. Frers commented on the ease of use of the new vessel, mentioning it was one of the things he wanted to experience during the test. Swan 78 is a cruiser racer, meaning it is as comfortable as you can imagine (and as comfortable as a yacht her size can be, according to the designer), but still capable of impressive performance. This is where the use of use comes in: Swan 78 has two steering wheels, sized and placed optimally to allow the skipper to pilot as simply as possible.

Swan 78

Twenty-four meters long, the Swan 78 yacht is a beauty with clear, simple lines flowing uninterrupted; a breathtakingly elegant vessel that turns heads by style and movement. All the many lines and ropes are hidden below the deck and seem to magically appear at the steering wheel, while several hydraulic-powered systems allow for easy trimming. Experienced skippers will soon understand the Swan 78 is a highly automated machine, directed and prompted by simple keys relaying their commands to some of the most advanced technology of our time.

Luxury sailing yacht Acapella sailing

49m Acapella is a sailing superyacht, launched in 2021 by a well known Croatian family. This luxurious yacht has been lovingly constructed with ultimate comfort in mind, which is reflected in her 5 incredible staterooms, accommodating a maximum of 12 guests.

We were lucky to test a unit with a taller mast and a deeper keel, built for a German sailing enthusiast, as his equipment package also included a longer bowsprit, carbon fiber rigging, square-top mainsail, main-sail slider and extra winches. As race-ready as the unit was, it was still a decidedly beautiful, comfortable yacht. We were particularly impressed by the cockpit, three and a half meters long, separated from the command post and equipped with several multi-use tables, a true center of life aboard.

Swan 78

Swan 78 layout

The cabin roof and the main deck bow were equally impressive: covered in teak, they looked very appealing for a lazy day in the sun. Swan 78 is available with two layouts; with the owner’s cabin placed either in the bow or aft below deck, with one VIP cabin and two twins; a crew cabin and a galley. The aft platform is a four-meter wide beach club, comfortable and impressive.

Swan 78

The interior design of the new Swan 78 can be described as Scandinavian elegance with an Italian touch, and all spaces are logically designed and simple enough to navigate even with your eyes closed. All the details and the finishing are worthy of a luxury yacht , which the 78 definitely is in every way, including the price tag.

Happy familly sailing

Nautor Swan 78 is built in carbon fiber reinforced by other top-quality materials, all the bulkheads are as sturdy as they are light, and every piece of the equipment is the most representative example of excellence in their segment, which is something no other builder can boast. Welcome to the unrivaled world of Swan.

CNB 78 Overview

There is always someone special aboard a CNB. A sailor who values performance, safety and luxury. An adventure seeker who truly loves the sea.

The CNB 78 redefines what an offshore sailing yacht should be. Its predecessor, the CNB 76 was the most successful maxi yacht built in series. The CNB 78 evolves the same style and functionality with even brighter, larger spaces where every detail has been designed for pleasure while sailing or at anchor.

A discerning yachtsman who may be considering a new Swan, Oyster, YYachts or other luxury sailing vessel should take a close look at the CNB 78 or the flagship CNB 88. There is simply nothing like it.

This is a new yacht, built to order for delivery worldwide presented by the exclusive CNB representative for residents of North America and the Caribbean. Inquire to reserve the next production slot for Spring 2025 delivery, while it is still available.

Congratulations to my client from Miami who purchased CNB 78 hull #5 "Belles" on display at the Cannes Yachting Festival 10 - 15 September 2024 at Port Pierre Canto SAIL 207.

Architect - Philippe Briand

To be a yacht architect is to find the magic balance between art and science. No one does that better than Philippe Briand. His designs have achieved over fifteen Yacht of the Year awards and six America's Cup campaigns, In addition, Philippe himself has won two world championships as skipper. His signature sleek profile and sense of proportion combine to make the CNB 78 a stunningly beautiful, fast, easily sailed yacht to explore all oceans.

Interior Designer - Jean Marc Piaton

Designer of the highly successful predecessor, the CNB 76 and Cruising World's Best Luxury Cruiser the CNB 66, Jean-Marc Piaton infused the CNB 78 with the same style; both timeless and innovative, bright, comfortable. An elegance made of balance, harmony and simplicity of lines with even more luxury.

Builder - Solaris Yachts Srl

Over forty years of dedicated boat building and refitting experience, superior technical knowledge and skilled craftsmanship combine to create yachts that are exceptionally seaworthy and luxurious. The quality and finish of the yard's interior joinery, fine woods, superyacht caliber materials, fittings and fixtures are distinctive features of Solaris, renowned and appreciated all over the world.

The cnb 78 redefines the off-shore sailing yacht with crew. from her predecessor, she takes on the same style and functionality but now offers even brighter, larger spaces where every detail has been designed for the pleasure of being at aboard., vincent arnaud.

sailing yacht 78

CNB78 is the successor to CNB76. It is an evolution rather than a revolution. We have kept all the criteria of the ideal yacht for voyages:

  • The water-line length of less than 24 m to explore the coastal waters.
  • The ability to be managed by a reduced and permanent crew.
  • The forward owner’s cabin and the aft longitudinal garage.

Magnificent & easy sailing

The aft section is the crew’s domain with a professional standard galley and a chart table all integrated in the immediate vicinity of a double cabin. The saloon is an extension of the cockpit; the glass aft bulkhead and the panoramic roof reinforce the feeling of freedom, enhanced by a subtle balance between wood, lacquered surfaces and textiles.

Guests will enjoy two double cabins of equal size, while the owner’s suite is worthy of a 90 foot yacht, occupying the entir e area forward of the mast. Her purposeful lines combined with a wide and powerful hull thanks to its two chines inspired by the world of ocean racing promise great performance.

The CNB 78 combines the experience of CNB and the knowhow of Solaris to create a modern and seaworthy yacht made to explore and conquer all oceans.

I was particularly pleased that the Solaris group wanted to continue the specific style of the CNB’s that we designed and created for the 76: this is recognition of the remarkable success of this model.

The new range, and the 78 in particular, are in the same vein: both classic and innovative, resolutely contemporary, elegant, bright, comfortable and above a joy to live with. She benefits above all from the opportunities offered by her new hull, which has enabled us to achieve unequalled improvements in volume and perceived space, particularly in the forward part of the yacht.

"Virtually fault free, eerily quiet, exceptionally engineered and boasting amazing attention to detail, the Fleming 75 is quite clearly the product of an obsessive design team."

- Motorboat & Yachting

Building on the success of the well-established Fleming 55, Fleming Yachts introduced the magnificent Fleming 75 in 2000. Ten years later the Fleming 75 was redesigned with a longer hull, and longer keel to become the new Fleming 78. The added waterline length and reduced fuel consumption and increases range by 500 NM. The yacht has the same elegant but no-nonsense design philosophy as her smaller sisters, but her larger size permits her to travel further and provide her guests and crew with even more luxurious accommodations. She has three staterooms all en-suite with a separate crews quarters aft. Standard power is twin MAN V12-1550hp engines, and MAN V8-1000hp, & MAN i6-800hp engines are optional. She has a range of 2,000 nautical miles at 10 knots and, can achieve speeds in excess of 20 knots. She is equipped as standard with Aquadrive vibration isolation systems. She has twin 29KW Onan generators, centralized hydraulic system driving American Bowthruster stabilizers, bow thruster, stern thruster, and twin Maxwell windlasses. A custom central monitoring system with three 15" color touchscreens displays all onboard systems, including tank levels, bilge & fire alarms as well as a fully controllable CCTV system.

This 90 ton yacht, like all Fleming's has been built to European CE Category "A" Standards, and she presents the ultimate balance of rugged construction, engineering excellence and artful elegance. Fleming Yachts are the "Ultimate Cruising Yacht," and the Fleming 78 is the ultimate Fleming.

Also offered is the Fleming 78 Classic Edition which has become a popular alternative for owners wanting a different style of flybridge. The Fleming 78 Classic takes cues from her sibling, the F65, with a lower, sleeker profile due to a single-level flybridge. Additionally, the longer boat deck increases space for seating and a tender or watercraft. Read more about the Fleming 78 Classic here .

Overview Continued...

Safety and convenience were given top priority in the design of all deck areas. All hardware was selected for durability and functionality and much of it, such as the stainless steel cleats and roller-chocks, was designed and custom made specifically for the vessel.

The foredeck platform has been set up for twin Maxwell hydraulic anchor windlasses. These have plug-in remote controls for reliability and safety, as well as controls at both the pilothouse and flybridge helm stations. The anchor platform is designed to accomodate two 176 Lbs (80Kg) Ultra anchors, and the chain locker holds two 400ft (121m) lengths of 1/2" (13mm) Grade-60 stainless steel chain.

Solid stainless steel fairleads are bolted through the bulwarks to allow the capstans to be used for warping. Storage lockers, either side of the anchor platform, house twin shorepower inlets as well as salt and fresh water  bibs.

The stainless steel oval-section handrail has been brought inboard for security. Additional stainless steel handrails are provided on the top of the non-skid cabin trunk for the convenience of children as well as providing tie-down points for optional cushions.

The forepeak is accessed through a deck hatch immediately aft of the windlasses and is separated from the rest of the boat by a watertight, collision bulkhead. It is divided into two chain lockers each with its own bitter end fitting. There is ample room for stowage of lines, and the forepeak drains directly overboard.

The Portuguese bridge deck provides protection for the pilothouse in the unlikely event that green water should come aboard. Solid doors, assisted by gas springs, give access to the forward deck to port and starboard. Lockers within the Portuguese bridge provide storage for fenders and lines. A handrail runs around the front and sides of the pilothouse with sliding doors on either side. Forward-facing windows have 10mm thick tempered glass. Wipers are heavy duty with an integral wash system. Teak laid decks are standard aft of the Portuguese Bridge.

Wide, well-protected side decks run down both sides of the boat with sturdy stainless steel handrails. Fuel fills with unique covers and anti-burp design are concealed within the steps leading down from the bridge deck. Bulwarks have inward-opening doors. Spring line cleats are recessed either side of roller chocks for spring lines.

The spacious aft deck is surrounded by a wide teak caprail and fiberglass skirt concealing engine room air intakes and mood lighting. Warping winches to port and stbd eliminate the labor of adjusting mooring lines. The inward-opening transom door, pivoting smoothly on a stainless steel tube-hinge of proprietary Fleming design, gives access to a 48" deep swim step with nonskid surface. (Teak decking is optional). Sturdy stainless steel handrails extend across the width of the transom. Cablemaster inlets are recessed behind the transom door. Shower fittings are located inside the aft end of the cockpit and are usable from the swim step.

The manual pull for the engine-room fire system and remote fuel shut-off valves are concealed behind the door on the aft face of the California deck. A large powered centerline hatch provides access into the lazarette. A teak-dressed step across the aft face of the California deck provides seating and a place to put equipment for activities such as scuba diving. Offered as an option is a retractable engine/thruster control station which folds away into the aft face of California deck structure.

The California Deck features a fixed settee around a teak-topped table. To port is a serving area with a stainless rail. There is overhead lighting as well as courtesy lights and custom lights on the aft face of the deckhouse. Access to the boat deck is provided by a curved ladder with radiused teak treads and oval section stainless tubes.

Flying Bridge

The flying bridge area is divided into two levels and has three distinct functional areas. The upper level is effectively an open-air pilothouse which features a helm station with full engine and thruster controls, instrumentation and a unique electronics console which retracts into the flybridge structure when not in use. There is a Stidd helmseat behind the stainless steel destroyer-type wheel and Stidd bench seats on either side of it. An aft-facing L-settee area includes a table and space to stbd for a bench-type freezer. A venturi shield with an integral stainless steel handrail curves around the front and side of the upper bridge to the radar arch.

The forward portion of the lower level is primarily for entertainment and is equipped with seating for a dozen people around a large table. Forward is a fridge and icemaker plus barbecue and sink beneath a folding lid. There is concealed lighting in the toe-space beneath the settees. A large watertight door provides direct access into the pilot house. A larger gas grill and top-opening freezer are offered as options in lieu of a port settee on the lower level.

Aft of the seating area is the boat deck equipped with a 12-foot, 1,500 lb. (680kg) capacity davit, which has its own hydraulic power unit enabling power slewing rotation luffing and a linear hoisting winch (using a linear winch in which the cable is not wrapped around a drum). The boat deck will accept tenders up to 17-feet mounted fore and aft. Also on the boat deck is a lift-up hatch providing access to the California deck and cockpit. An AC outlet is provided for plugging in a battery charger for the tender.

Available as options are hardtops for the upper bridge and for covering the seating area on the lower level. Also available as options are a second control station at the aft end of the boat deck and, separately, an airfoil-section yacht mast for mounting on top of the arch.

Salon, Galley & Dinette

With a combined area of 350 sq ft. these three spaces flow together to form a luxurious yet functional area made even larger by the extension of the salon onto the California Deck through the aft doors. Teak and holly soles are standard throughout as are wood mini-blinds recessed into the window frames.

The salon can be customized to suit owners requirements. The standard salon layout includes an entertainment center with cabinets and bookshelves along the stbd side, and TV cabinet in the starboard aft corner with a powered TV Lift. To port is an L-settee with Fleming oval teak coffee table with storage locker. Aft to port is a bar cabinet with granite counter top, sink, combo fridge/icemaker, and bottle storage.

Opposite the galley the dinette area comes standard with a curved banquette, oval dining table, storage cabinets with glass doors at the forward bulkhead with a granite top. Designer LED lighting is installed over the table and has a dimmer control.

The galley features an 18-foot linear length of granite counter with an undermount stainless steel double sink, overhead lockers, ample drawers and storage, pull-out pot locker forward of the cooktop and includes the following quality appliances, Sub Zero fridge with freezer drawers, Miele oven, Miele  dishwasher, convection microwave, waste disposer, Miele induction cooktop with custom stainless steel potholders, Instahot for dispensing filtered hot and cold water, swivel faucet with pull-out nozzle.

Accommodations

The wide beam of the Fleming 78 provides exceptionally spacious accommodations featuring teak and holly soles throughout and bulkheads faced with teak and synthetic soft leather paneling and headliners. The accommodations are reached from the pilothouse via stairs, which widen and flatten out as they descend into the forward lobby. Each tread is illuminated with concealed rope lights for discreet evening illumination. An oval section stainless steel handrail follows the curve of the stairwell, which also features a mirrored alcove with a granite shelf for owner's art work.

Each of the staterooms open off the forward lobby, which has a custom overhead light and a vertical stainless handgrip. A gas-spring assisted hatch leads to the machinery space below the sole. The washer and drier are concealed behind a teak-faced door.

The owner's stateroom features a kingsize bed with mattress, which lifts hydraulically for easy access to a large storage area under it. A curved bureau with mirrors are on either side of the bed. Teak cove moldings along both sides of the stateroom and a curved soffit over the bed contain concealed lighting. There is a walk-in closet with louvered double doors and portlight, a desk with ample drawers and a space designated for a TV. Large stainless steel, CE-approved portlights are featured in the stateroom and head.

The owner's head features a shower stall or optional tub with a thermostatically controlled mixer valve in a fiberglass-lined enclosure. It is divided from the head by stainless steel and glass doors. A ceramic basin is set in a granite or marble-topped counter with designer faucets.

The port guest cabin is available with either twins or a double berth with an optional upper slide-out berth. The fiberglass-lined shower is divided from the head by a stainless steel and glass door, and the shower faucet is thermostatically controlled. A ceramic basin is set in a granite or marble-topped counter with designer faucets. CE-approved portlights are used in the stateroom and head.

A VIP guest cabin forward features a tapered Queen berth with mattress, and has a hydraulically powered lift for easy access to storage underneath. The forward cabin is also available with a V-Berth layout. A CE-approved skylight and escape hatch includes a remote controlled roller-type insect and blackout screen. There are hanging lockers to port and starboard with louvered doors and drawers underneath. A fiberglass-lined shower stall is divided from the head by a curved stainless steel and glass door. The shower faucet is thermostatically controlled. A ceramic basin is set in a granite or marble-topped counter with designer faucets. CE-approved portlights are used in the stateroom and head.

Machinery Space

Unique to the Fleming 78 is an extensive machinery space located under the forward accommodations, it is very well illuminated with LED lighting. The cabin sole is double thickness and filled with lead/foam sound insulation to isolate the accommodations from this area, which is 29-feet long and is accessed through a hatch in the forward lobby. Installed in the machinery space are the pumps, water heaters, black and grey water tanks and air-conditioning units. This functional area frees up space in the engine room and keeps wiring and piping runs to a minimum. It also allows easy access to key components and makes it possible to access plumbing for toilets and showers from underneath.

The machinery space is also home to the 1,200 A/H AGM house battery bank. Also in this area are the two Outback 3,500 watt inverters, the 36Kw ASEA freuqnecy converter and all the switchgear associated with the electrical systems. The machinery space has its own ventilation blower ducted to an outlet on deck. It is protected by an automatic fire suppression system. The bow thruster motor and associated hydraulic valves are also readily accessible. Despite all this equipment there remains ample storage space for supplies for long range cruising.

Engine Room

The 22-foot long, full height engine room in the Fleming 78 is spacious, brightly lit and laid out with easy access to all equipment. There are even lights illuminating the drip pans under the engines. Stainless steel overhead handrails run the full length of the engine room. The overhead is up to 8" thick, filled with sound insulation. A workbench with drawers, and stainless work surface are standard. Floorboards are dressed with checkerplate-patterned Lonseal for appearance and sound attenuation. The engine room is lined with a reflective alloy pegboard for easy maintenance. The access door is an internally insulated, submarine type with gasket, double latch and inspection window.

The two main fuel tanks divide the engine room from the accommodations and total 2,500 US gals (9,463 liters). Two auxiliary wing tanks bring the total fuel capacity up to 3,000 US gals (11,356 liters). The fuel tanks are located on the longitudinal center of gravity so the trim of the Fleming does not change as fuel is consumed. Sight gages show the height of the fuel in every tank and pressure sensors display the contents, in gallons, liters and percentage, on the FFM monitoring system in the pilothouse. Twin Racor filters with vacuum gages, change-over valves and stainless steel drip trays are standard as is a fuel transfer pump, with filter and counter, which can be used to transfer fuel between tanks. Fuel selector panels provide easy selection for supply and return to and from main engines and generators. Storage bins for spares are provided above the side tanks.

Intake air is drawn in from around the cockpit rather than outside the hull where it is laden with salt. Automatic baffles close off the ventilation ducts at the aft end of the engine room. The automatic fire system also has a manual pull operated from the aft deck.

Naturally the main engines are the most prominent items of equipment in the engine room. Standard engines are MAN V12-1550 HP, with optional MAN V8-1200, MAN V8-1000 and MAN i6-800 hp. There is good access around both sizes of engines and both are fitted with additional 200 amp hevy duty brushless alternators controlled by an external regulator. Oversize raw water intake ball valves and sea strainers are conveniently placed.

Huge Aquadrives (the largest in the range) isolate the engines from the shafts and permit the use of soft engine mounts, matched to the vibration characteristics of the engine, which reduce noise and vibration transmitted to the hull. The shaft couplings have protective covers for safety. There is easy access to the shaft logs, which are bronze with a dripless packing.

Standard generators are two 29 KW Onan eQD in sound shields. Generator exhausts pass through waterdrop mufflers to reduce exhaust noise to a whisper. Special attention has also been paid to the main engine exhaust system, which has been designed to keep the boat as quiet and free from vibration as possible.

Variable displacement hydraulic pumps on both engines power the ABT centralized hydraulic system, thus maintaining stabilizing and bow & stern thruster operations even when running on one engine. Stabilizer actuators are readily accessible forward of the wing tanks, and the hydraulic reservoir is easy to reach on the aft bulkhead. A hydraulically driven Pacer emergency bilge pump is optional.

95 US gal (359 liter) oil tanks to port and stbd provide storage of clean and dirty lube oil. Tanks are connected to two oil change systems. A 16,000 BTU engine room air-conditioning system is standard equipment.

A large hydraulically operated centerline hatch provides convenient access into the lazarette, which contains the water tanks, and Cablemasters. All equipment is located for easy access, leaving ample space for storage.

The spacious Fleming 78 pilothouse has the feel of a bridge of a much larger vessel and is the nerve and social center of the boat. Gently curving stairs lead down to the accommodations and short companionways lead up to the flybridge and down to the salon. Sliding doors on either side give access to port and starboard bridge decks. Throughout there are ample handrails for security.

An L-shaped settee, raised up for enhanced visibility, is set around a teak table with storage built into the leg. Wood window blinds slot into retainers. An optional, hydraulically operated pilot-berth can be recessed into the aft bulkhead. To port is a chart table and flexible chart light. Of course, the main function of the pilothouse is to provide a dedicated area for piloting free from distractions. The Fleming 78 has achieved this with style and luxury. There is space for a full range of electronics in full-width upper and lower consoles. Engine instrumentation and controls as well as the bow & stern thruster joysticks are grouped at the helm station. One Stidd helmseat is standard but there is space for two additional chairs. There are separate swing-out, back-lit switch panels.

Adjacent to the pilothouse is a day head with toilet and ceramic basin set in granite or marble countertop with mirror and lockers. There is an opening portlight a blower for ventilation, and airconditioning inlet.

Aft Lobby and Crew Quarters

Access to the crew's quarters and the engine room are from the port side deck, via an access door and stairs, which lead down to the aft lobby. This location allows the crew to come and go from their quarters, and the engine room, without disturbing the guests enjoying the amenities of the California deck.

The aft lobby opens into the crew head, the crew cabin and the engine-room. This allows the crew head to be accessed without having to enter the crew cabin. The crew cabin has two hanging lockers, one 45" wide berth and a second 36" wide berth, ample drawer space and additional overhead storage. There is also a mirror, desk with escape hatch over and two CE-approved portlights. The crew head has a washbasin, shower and  toilet. A 15" color touchscreen connected to the FFM monitoring system is included as standard in the crew cabin. This ensures that the crew are aware of any alarms and can monitor the yachts systems remotely. The internally insulated submarine-type door to the engine-room has a glass inspection port. There is also an option for two seperate crew cabins.

First look: CNB 78 – stunning bluewater cruiser

  • Toby Hodges
  • January 12, 2024

Another bluewater cruiser that can be easily managed short-handed crew, CNB is continuing to deliver with their new CNB 78

Product Overview

As Nicolas Claris’ photos show, CNB has produced a sympathetic replacement to the popular 76 to mark its first yacht since its change of ownership from Groupe Beneteau to Solaris. Philippe Briand and Jean Marc Piaton were reunited to create tweaks to a new slightly longer hull form, rather than make any sweeping changes. The result, the CNB 78, was launched in August, just in time to get to the world premiere in Cannes, where we stepped aboard.

The CNB 78 is faithful to CNB’s genes in that it’s a bluewater cruiser that can be easily managed by a short-handed crew. Proper crew accommodation and separation is designed-in to the interior. Crew have the whole aft section with galley, owner and guest cabins are forward, and these zones are separated by a decksaloon which both links to the cockpit and creates space for a beam-wide engine room below.

Rollers built in to the transom swim platform make jet RIB launch easier

CNB’s manager Vincent Arnaud remains the constant, and expressed how happy he was with the quality of the construction and fitout as he showed me around. “We wanted to bring something new and yet keep our roots.” A key improvement is that bulkheads are now laminated in, using a more traditional approach than the Beneteau Group’s industrial modular technique on the 76.

Arnaud explained that what they saved on designing and engineering it to an industrial level (as Beneteau did), was put into equipment and finish. Certainly the curved veneers with continuous grain, in this case in walnut, show a step up in finish quality.

On deck we see no step to the side decks, just a gentle ramp, with full length caulking from stern to bow emphasising this clear passage. While the longitudinal tender garage remains key and very similar, with room for a Williams 395, it’s easier to launch now with rollers integrated into the swim platform. There is a huge sail locker for furling sails, which could be a crew cabin, but that’d be at odds with the programme of the boat, which already includes generous accommodation for two crew aft within the proper living areas.

The spacious decksaloon area

A key improvement has been in the guest cabins, as both are double cabins with the choice of doubles or twins, rather than one being a bunk cabin as it was on the 76. The owner’s suite is palatial, comfortable and airy yet private. It starts at the mast base bulkhead and can have the berth forward or aft and offset without changing the layout of the ensuite. The second hull to launch will show there’s even space enough to house a piano in there.

The new luxury yacht Gunboat 78 is the maximum sized catamaran to fit the CE Class A ocean going yacht classification. It is lightweight & practical, and delivers re-known Gunboat performance with its obvious luxury. A whisper of wind leads to acceleration one can feel. The Gunboat 78’s waterline enables smooth sailing without motion.

The Gunboat 78 yacht is a magical size that delivers all of the comfort of much larger yachts, without the headaches, expense and complication. Beyond this size requires a quantum jump in crew and crew space, without much increase in space dedicated to the owner and guests.

Rolex Big Boat Series (RBBS), the premier racing event on San Francisco Bay since 1964, always delivers big: epic conditions over four days of racing, world-class racecourses managed by a world-class race committee, and memorable parties.

The regatta, hosted by St. Francis Yacht Club (StFYC) in San Francisco from Sept. 11-15, is stacked with Marin talent, including three teams looking to defend their 2023 titles: Marc McMorris (San Rafael) owner/skipper of the Cape 31 M2; John Arens (San Rafael) owner/skipper of J/109 Reverie; Kristin and Ryan Simmons (Sausalito) owners/skipper of J/105 Blackhawk.

StFYC Commodore Chris Perkins, from Mill Valley, has been involved with RBBS for a good portion of the event’s colorful 60 years of competition. He’s fired up for the full-on schedule of events, on and off the water, which have evolved RBBS into one of the nation’s most prestigious racing events.

“The traditional RBBS racing in front of the club over four days is just fantastic,” says Perkins. “If you like big breeze, we’re blessed; there’s nowhere in the world like it. I’ve raced RBBS since the late eighties and I just love the event.”

Back to defend his title in the highly competitive J/105 fleet Simmons says his team’s competitive edge this year will be consistency, starting with his crew. They’ve been actively racing all year as part of the J/105 championship series which runs March through September culminating with Big Boat Series as the final event of the championship season.

“We’re racing with mostly the same team and we’re lucky we have low turnover, we’ve been sailing together a long time and it’s everything, the big difference,” says Simmons. “We’re hoping to be in the mix and have a chance on Saturday and Sunday. On the first two days of the regatta, you can’t win the regatta, but you can definitely take yourself out of contention so sailing smart the first couple of days then on Saturday and Sunday is really where the championship will be won. NeNe (owned and skippered by Tim Russell, Novato) and Niuhi (owned and skippered by Randy Hecht, Tiburon) have been the premier boats in the most recent regattas but multiple J105s have won RBBS in the last 10 years; we have three North American champions racing in the fleet and a multitude of RBBS winners. It’s a pretty deep field and that’s what we’re in it for.”

Russell has been involved in the J105 class for more than 20 years, formerly owner of Aquavit and since 2019, NeNe. He’s been trailing Blackhawk in recent editions of RBBS, placing second in 2018 and is eager to take home a RBBS first place. He’ll be racing with his usual crew of the past few seasons and the addition this year of Bill Melbostad (Tiburon) who will be trimming main and calling tactics. Russell is currently leading the local J/105 fleet in the 2024 class championship series and will be a serious podium contender.

“The Bay is just the perfect venue for the J105 – it’s an awesome sailing boat for San Francisco and that is what keeps the fleet strong here,” says Russell. “I think there are maybe 10 boats in the fleet that can win a race but there are probably five who can win a regatta. I think the key is that you are not going to get a good start every single time and you have to be able to recover from a bad start; you have to turn what may have been a 12th into a fourth or fifth. It’s super frustrating not having won RBBS but you have to take chances, and I usually approach every regatta being very conservative; in Big Boat you have to gamble.”

Arens has been active on his J109 this summer, including one design racing his boat for the first time, which he notes improved his team’s game immensely.

“The big adventure for us this year was taking the boat down to So Cal for a couple of regattas including Long Beach Race Week which was the Pacific Coast Championship for J/109s, and which we won,” says Arens. “It absolutely upped our game – we had to get used to being around a lot of boats at the start line, windward/leeward marks etc. It really put an emphasis on execution.”

Reverie took third in the recent Swiftsure regatta, considered the dress rehearsal for RBBS, and Arens is looking forward to any surprises that may await in this week’s RBBS.

“Racing in ORC is always a new challenge because you don’t know who you will be racing against year over year so it always feels new. The RBBS competition is super tight and we feel like we are measuring ourselves against the best sailors out there…and we love the rum parties! Our dock assignment at StFYC this year puts us next to Merlin which is really cool; it is a boat I’ve admired since I was a 10-year-old kid when my grandfather was doing the ’77 Transpac.”

Quantum Sails will be hosting Daily Weather Briefings ay 7:30 a.m. every race day. All sailors are invited to tune in for the forecast from experts at Sailflow Weather and to hear local knowledge about San Francisco Bay conditions and currents. Racing is set to begin September 12, at 11 a.m. local time for most classes and 1 p.m. for the Classics.

Sailing yachts like Mike Lynch's are 'unsinkable bodies', CEO of boat manufacturing firm says

Bayesian superyacht which sank off Italy is an "unsinkable" vessel, Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, said.

Vessels like Mike Lynch's stricken superyacht are "unsinkable", according to the chief executive of the firm which makes and sells them.

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, told Sky News there are no flaws with the design and construction of the Bayesian superyacht which capsized in a storm off the coast of Porticello, Sicily, on Monday.

Five bodies were found by divers on Wednesday - taking the number of confirmed dead to six.

The Italian Sea Group also owns the firm that built British tech tycoon Mr Lynch's Bayesian, and Mr Costantino said the vessels "are the safest in the most absolute sense".

News of the sinking left CEO of The Italian Sea Group Giovanni Costantino in ‘sadness on the one hand and disbelief on the other’.

"Being the manufacturer of Perini [boats], I know very well how the boats have always been designed and built," he said.

"And as Perini is a sailing ship... sailing ships are renowned to be the safest ever."

He said their structure and keel made them "unsinkable bodies".

Mr Costantino said news of the sinking "put me in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other".

"This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact," he said.

It is understood Italian prosecutors investigating the incident are continuing to hold interviews with the survivors.

On Tuesday they questioned the captain for more than two hours to help reconstruct what happened and provide useful technical details.

Four British inspectors are also in Porticello and have begun a preliminary assessment of events.

It is understood they will look at all relevant aspects of the incident, including the design, stability, and operation of the vessel. They will also examine the effects of the weather conditions experienced.

Twenty-two people were on board the vessel, 15 of whom were rescued - including Briton Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter Sofia.

Divers will resume efforts on Thursday morning to bring ashore a body they found earlier. One more person remains missing.

Captain Glenn on Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 return and the Bayesian 'freak accident'

Captain Glenn Shephard has been a familiar face throughout all four seasons of Below Deck Sailing Yacht, where he has commanded Parsifal III.

From dealing with the yacht's unpredictable challenges and managing onboard love triangles, to enjoying oversized crackers in the galley, the Bravo star has made the 177-foot vessel his second home for more than 15 years.

Usually catering to demanding guests as they charter through Greece, Spain, and Italy, it seems fitting that the 63-year-old chatted with us from the comfort of his own boat, Avalon, in Croatia.

Season 5 of Below Deck Sailing Yacht has been one of the most anticipated in the show's history. Viewers have been eagerly awaiting its release after photos confirmed filming took place last summer.

Initially slated for a February debut, fans have speculated that the latest season’s release has been delayed following allegations of sexual misconduct against first mate Gary King, made by a production member just days after filming wrapped. King has vehemently denied the accusations.

Despite the controversy, the Montreal native reassured fans that the new season is on its way. However, he remains unsure of exactly when viewers will see him alongside engineer Colin Macrae and chief stew Daisy Kelliher back on their screens.

He told The Standard: “They announced it at BravoCon in November. But then it didn’t air in Spring or Summer. I think it’s coming soon, but I don’t know exactly when. The network decides that. I get endless questions on social media about it, but all I can say is, 'It’s coming soon'.

“We just have to be patient.”

sailing yacht 78

Though the delay is frustrating, it appears both Shephard and fans will have to wait a bit longer for the next season of Below Deck Sailing Yacht. In the meantime, UK fans can catch him at the Southampton International Boat Show 2024 later this month. The event, the largest of its kind in the UK, returns for its 55th year at Mayflower Park from 13th to 22nd September 2024.

Speaking about his involvement, he said: "It's pretty cool. I'm really excited."

The seasoned captain will participate in the ribbon-cutting ceremony, host a meet-and-greet, and take part in a Q&A session. And he assured us that he’s ready for all questions, even tough ones regarding the recent Bayesian tragedy, which claimed the lives of British entrepreneur Mike Lynch , his daughter Hannah, and four others when their luxury yacht sank off Sicily.

Boat enthusiasts have been eager to hear Shephard’s perspective on the tragic sinking of Bayesian , especially given his experience with Parsifal III, a superyacht from the same manufacturer. Although that’s where the two vessels similarities end, with Parsifal boasting two masts, not one. It also doesn't have a lifting keel, meaning stability is always at its maximum onboard.

Speaking of the tragedy, Shephard added: “I know there's going to be questions, and I'm happy to address them, but I'm not going to speculate. All I can say is, my heart goes out to the family and loved ones of the people that perish. It's a horrible tragedy, and I'll also say it's definitely a freak accident. You know anyone thinking about going out on a boat and worried that's going to happen - that doesn't happen and I couldn't believe that it could happen.

“We're going to have to take steps to make sure it never happens again, obviously. But no one thought that that could happen. We're all blown away - people in the industry, naval architects - it was a freak incident. That's all I can say.”

Glenn stressed that the Marine Accident Investigation Branch will thoroughly examine the situation, avoiding “guesswork and conspiracy theories” amid the growing social media speculation. He also underlined the importance of safety onboard and reassured viewers that such freak accidents are uncommon.

“Safety is critical,” he said. “It's the most important thing at all times. And we're always keeping an eye on the weather, obviously, but that what happened was a very localised, I think was a very localised event.

“It probably came and gone in a matter of minutes. It's not a hurricane. It's not a storm that's lasting all night. It's something that blows through. I don't know I wasn't there, but that's what I think. And so you have to take all the precautions to be ready for anything, you know, and that's I think we will all learn from this.”

With his sailing knowledge sure to be challenged this weekend, Shephard can usually rely on the camaraderie of his fellow Below Deck captains to riff off of.

Since the debut of Below Deck Sailing Yacht in 2020, he has formed close bonds with Captain Sandy Yawn and Captain Lee Rosbach , whom he hopes will “take to the high seas again” after missing season 12 due to ill health.

sailing yacht 78

However, Shephard's colleagues have had their share of drama. It all started when Yawn stepped in for Rosbach during Season 11 after he had taken ill. Their feud reached fever pitch when he publicly criticised her leadership and her decision to fire stew Camille Lamb without telling him. As a result, Yawn cemented their fallout by not inviting Rosbach to her wedding in May.

Despite the drama, Shephard has stayed neutral and hopes for reconciliation. He shared: “I always like to bring people together, but I don’t know the full story. There’s talk, and it seems they’ve confirmed they’re not the best of friends. But life’s too short for that.

“When we were all together on stage at BravoCon, they seemed fine. But personalities are tricky — especially in the yachting world, where square pegs don’t always fit into round holes. Strong personalities can mean conflict, and resolving that is a massive skill in any industry."

Looking ahead, the captain is contemplating his future with the show after five seasons. For now, fans can rest assured that Captain Glenn isn’t ready to retire from the captain’s chair just yet. He’s aiming to strike a balance between his work and personal enjoyment, signalling a move towards a more leisurely future.

“I’ll probably continue doing it as long as they keep asking me back. I love it. But because of my age, it’s time for me to stop and smell the roses a bit. My sailing days for work aren’t over, but I’m not going to do it full-time anymore. I’d love to do more seasons of the show.”

The Southampton International Boat Show 2024 takes place at Mayflower Park from September 13 to 22. More information available here .

While there is still no definite news about the next season of Below Deck Sailing Yacht , Gary King made headlines by dropping a bombshell allegation about his accuser. After Gary was accused of sexual misconduct , Bravo removed the cast of Below Deck Sailing Yacht from the lineup at BravoCon and has yet to reveal the future of the television show. These allegations against Gary and his previous inappropriate behavior seem to have tarnished Sailing Yacht 's reputation.

"I know it’s super sad, and it honestly hurt so much and affected my whole family, I’m just glad it’s in the past."

Gary has continued acting as if these troubling allegations are false and that he will be in Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5. In the comments section of a recent post on Gary 's Instagram, Instagram user @unicornmagic78 asked, " Just out of curiosity, was there an investigation into the allegations? "

Gary responded to the question by saying, " Her and her boyfriend (now ex I hear) weren’t invited back to any BD due to the problems they caused, so she wanted revenge and to try [to] make some money out of it. " Gary continues to claim these allegations against him are false.

Gary continued his response to the original poster, saying, " To me, I knew it never happened, but it affected my family and potentially ruined my career because of her lies :( was honestly the hardest thing I’ve ever gone through. " Gary went on to say that he is now in a much better place but that this experience has been scary.

Reality TV is more popular than ever. With so many to choose from, here are some of the best reality TV shows to stream or watch right now.

Another commenter, @michae1ajane , replied to Gary's response, saying, " I never believed that horrible story, and it made me sick how quickly people jumped on it and were so unbelievably mean to/about you. Does this mean you’ll be back? " Many have also wondered if Gary will return for Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5, while Bravo remains silent on the issue . Gary sidestepped the question by answering, " I know it’s super sad, and it honestly hurt so much and affected my whole family, I’m just glad it’s in the past, but haters will hate, and there will always be trolls. "

Gary believes his time on Below Deck Sailing Yacht was memorable, fun, and exciting for everyone involved. However, his personality clashed with many of his crewmates during filming. Gary has a rough demeanor that can rub people the wrong way, which has led to many issues with those who were assigned to work under him. Aside from work-related problems, Gary was also involved in many toxic " boatmances " during filming for the seasons he was on, including one love triangle. Gary’s inability to control his behavior may have cost him any future he could have had in the Below Deck franchise.

This is not the first time a show in the Below Deck franchise has faced allegations of sexual misconduct and impropriety. As these accusations begin to build up, Bravo faces more and more pressure to get its stars under control and head away from serious legal problems. Although Gary is adamant that he will be back for Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 , it may be in the best interest of Bravo and its shows to cut ties with Gary. Below Deck Sailing Yacht has already missed the period when it would have aired this year, leaving its future unknown.
