Scania has unveiled its new 13-liter DI13 marine engine for propulsion and auxiliary use.
"This is our most advanced marine engine so far, contributing to a better operating economy and sustainability at sea. We want to meet our customers' needs and positively impact fuel efficiency and product performance for demanding conditions within all operations," said Fredrik Järild, Head of Sales Power Solutions.
With an improved fuel efficiency, this 13-liter engine has a major CO2-emission reduction. It is the most fuel-efficient option out of the company's marine engines, meaning up to 8% improvement in fuel consumption compared to the current generation at the same power output. That translates to a potential saving of up to 6.7 liters of diesel per engine hour at full load.
It has increased maximum power and capability to perform with tough heavy loads but is also prepared for light or medium duty or hybrid use. The new engine is fit for a wide range of applications, including the possibility of downsizing from higher-size alternatives. The engine complies with current IMO Tier III emission standards and is compatible with biodiesel blends and HVO fuels.

Photo: Scania
Scania has launched a new 13-liter marine engine for propulsion and auxiliary applications that it says is its most advanced marine engine yet, meeting high performance and reliability standards.
Designated the DI13 and unveiled at last week’s SMM trade fair in Hamburg, the new engine has a power range of 257-772 kW (350-1050 HP) and an auxiliary range of 301-553 kW: subject to duty ratings, emission standards and rated speed.
“This is our most advanced marine engine so far, contributing to a better operating economy and sustainability at sea,” says Fredrik Järild, head of sales power solutions at Scania. “We want to meet our customers’ needs and positively impact fuel efficiency and product performance for demanding conditions within all operations
With an improved fuel efficiency, the new engine offers an up to 8% improvement in fuel consumption compared to the current Scania generation at the same power output. That translates to a potential saving of up to 6.7 liters of diesel per engine hour at full load.
Scania says that it has increased maximum power and capability to perform with tough heavy loads but is also prepared for light or medium duty or hybrid use. It is suitable for a wide range of applications, including the possibility of downsizing from higher-size alternatives. The engine complies with current I MO Tier III emission standard s and is compatible with biodiesel blends and HVO fuels.
The new engine is based on the Scania Super, which received top recognitions from international experts, including the “Green Truck” award in 2024 and “Diesel of the Year” in 2023. This, together with Scania’s long-term experience in the marine industry and close collaboration with various types of customers paved the way for a product dedicated to marine applications, prepared for times of transition in energy sources. “After the successful introduction of the new platform for trucks, buses and industrial applications, it is time to expand our offering to marine industries,” says Järild.
- Scania has a wide range of solutions and is also scaling up its electric alternatives such as hybrid and full-electric solutions, now available for customers. Read more on all that HERE.

Scania DI13 Diesel
- By Jim Hendricks
- Updated: November 2, 2021
Scania might not be the first name that comes to mind when you think of marine diesels. But that could well change thanks to a powerful, lightweight and efficient new model showcased in a twin-inboard installation powering the new 46-foot Billfish from Viking Yacht Company.
Swedish-based Scania—one of the world’s leading manufacturers of engines for trucks, buses, industrial applications and boats—introduced the DI13 marine diesel to North America earlier this year. That prompted one of the United States distributors for Scania North America, Mack Boring & Parts Co., to put a pair of the 900 hp versions of the DI13 in its new Viking 46BF company boat. Mack Boring christened it Mack 900 .
After testing, Viking seems delighted with the Swedish diesels. “We’re very impressed with the performance of the Scania engines during our sea trials,” says Anthony Scola, international sales manager for Viking Yacht Company. “Their light weight, power and fuel efficiency are immediately apparent.”
Available in 700 and 900 hp models, the 12.7-liter displacement engine features an inline-six-cylinder turbocharged design with the Scania XPI common-rail extra-high-pressure injection system that provides continuous adjustments for optimal fuel efficiency. This enables rapid delivery of torque for quick acceleration while also minimizing noise levels.
Meeting the Environmental Protection Agency’s Tier 3 emissions regulations for diesel engines, the DI13 is built on a compacted graphite iron block for strength and weight reduction. It employs a simple wastegate turbocharger. This generates exceptional performance without the need for additional turbos or superchargers that add weight.
As a point of comparison, the Scania DI13 weighs 2,833 pounds. That’s 21 percent less than the 3,600-pound Caterpillar C12.9 Tier 3 turbo diesel, available in 850 and 1,000 hp versions. It is also 18 percent lighter than the 3,349-pound Volvo Penta D13 Tier 3 turbo diesel that comes in four iterations from 700 to 1,000 hp.
In test results of the twin DI13s supplied by Mack Boring, the 43,134-pound 46BF topped out at 47.7 mph at 2,300 rpm, where the 900 hp engines burned 43 gph, for 1.1 mpg. The most efficient cruising speed was 32.2 mph at 1,700 rpm with the twin DI13s burning 22 gph for 1.46 mpg.
“Everyone who has run the boat has commented on its acceleration, speed, responsiveness and quietness,” says Patrick McGovern, president of Mack Boring & Parts Co.
You can’t really commit to a marine engine purchase without seriously considering the service aspect. This engine brand answers that with its Smart Support by Scania, which the company describes as “an intelligent, intuitive and predictive system designed to provide superior support and service for every Scania customer in North America.”

Scania’s 900 hp Diesels Hit Stride
- By Patrick Sciacca
- December 1, 2021
I looked at the GPS on the Viking Yachts’ 46 Billfish Mack 900 . The speed showed 41.5 knots as twin 900 hp Scania diesels spun at their rated 2,300 rpm. According to the Scania staff on board, the boat ran like this from day one. These motors represent the first step in the Swedish company’s commitment to the US pleasure-craft sector.
Scania is a household name in Europe, known for building all things on- and off-highway, including buses, trucks and diesel engines. Its marine diesels are most noted for their use in commercial applications, ranging from patrol boats to lobster boats to passenger ferries.
During the pandemic, the company, working with its US distributor Mack Boring, decided it was time to show American yachtsmen what its diesels could do.
To that end, the 46 Billfish I got aboard made an easy cruise speed of 31 knots at just 1,750 rpm and 70 percent engine load with 12 people aboard. This is equivalent to a light jog for the inline six-cylinder engines. Fuel burn was 48 gph. Considering a 10 percent reserve on the vessel’s 709-gallon fuel capacity, Mack 900’s range is 412 nautical miles at this cruise speed. Pick it up to 2,000 rpm, and the speed jumps to 36 knots with a 68 gph burn and 337 nm range. At 41.5 knots, fuel burn is 89 gph and range is 297 nm.
On servicing US clients, Mack Boring has an ever-growing support network. Customers call an 800 number, and within 15 minutes, the issue is assigned and the customer is contacted. The parts are located and a technician is appointed. The company is graded on its response times.
The Mack 900 with the new Scania engines will be on display at boat shows up and down the East Coast this fall.
The Middleweight: Scania 900 HP Diesel
The 900 hp Scania DI13 diesel is an inline, six-cylinder common-rail engine aimed at midsize pleasure-craft applications. The motor is built on a lightweight compacted-graphite-iron engine block. It comes in at 2,832 pounds, sans coolant and oil. The company’s marine-engine range currently runs from 700 to 1,100 horsepower, which also includes a 16-liter diesel model. Scania’s diesel range is also Tier III-compliant.

Scania Debuts 900 HP Engines for Sportfishing Boats
Sea trials show impressive results for the first 46-foot Viking powered by twin 900 HP Scania Engines.
I admit, as a passenger on a sportfishing boat, I never give much thought to the engines. If they start up and get us to the fishing grounds and back, I’m happy. But, there are a lot of factors that go into creating top-performing, reliable engines—and it starts with who builds them.
Before we left the dock, Albert Alcalá, Sales Manager of US Marine Products for Scania, explained the company’s background. Scania started in Sweden in 1891 and now operates in more than 100 countries. They have been providing transport solutions for trucks, buses, and commercial/passenger marine vessels for years, as well as providing engines for various industrial uses. Scania partnered with Mack Boring & Parts Co. , who’ve been commissioning their recreational engines here in the United States.
The MACK 900 made its tournament debut in the Beach Haven, New Jersey White Marlin Invitational, followed by the MidAtlantic Tournament in Cape May, New Jersey in August. It will also be on display at the Atlantic City In-Water Boat Show in September and the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in October .
As we maneuvered out of the marina and into open water, I was expecting a bit of a rough ride based on the marine forecast. However, the 46’ Billfish, pushed by those powerful Scania engines, cut through the water for a beautiful, smooth ride.
After spending some time up on the bridge, I decided to go down into the command deck area. Albert was there, and we marveled at how quiet the engines were, as we were able to carry on a conversation at a normal volume.
Albert’s passion for these engines was apparent. I asked him what makes him most proud about them, and he answered, “The fuel injection system.” Scania uses a proprietary Engine Management System (EMS) and common rail extra high-pressure injection system (XPI). This optimizes fuel delivery, thereby enabling extra torque, exceptional fuel efficiency and a quieter operation. He also explained that Scania engines are built on a compacted graphite iron (CGI) engine block and employ a simple wastegate turbocharger. This allows the twin Scania DI13-liter in-line 6-cylinder engines to deliver superior performance without the need for any additional superchargers or turbos that would add weight. All these things contribute to the reliability and performance of the engine.
“I like to call it a Swedish Army Knife instead of a Swiss Army Knife, since we are a Swedish company. This engine is a beast!” said Alcalá.
