15 Free Boat Plans You Can Build This Week (with PDFs)

Boatbuilding is one of the most ancient forms of craftsmanship still alive today. As long as our ancestors have had a curiosity about exploring open waters, they have been practicing and honing their boatbuilding skills.

To be honest, however, building a boat is no small task. It will require a lot of work and patience to ultimately create a finished product that you are happy with and that is actually seaworthy.

Of course, we have also included a few free boat plans. You can keep in your back pocket for the next time you are asked to build a cardboard boat as part of a contest or lakefront teambuilding adventure.

We hope that these resources help you in your journey to build your own boat!

Why Build Your Own Boat?

small sailboat template

There are a lot of reasons why you should explore building your own boat versus buying a pre-made model. Here is a quick breakdown of the most obvious benefits:

  • You will know the ins and outs of your finished boat better than anyone
  • It can be a great project to work on with your teenage or even adult children
  • You will gain valuable skills molding and shaping wood and other materials
  • You can design your boat for your specific needs
  • You don’t have to trust the sometimes-questionable manufacturing of mass-produced boats
  • You can create a boat that functions as your second home on the water
  • You can save money if you source materials mindfully

Of course, most first-time boatbuilders still experience some level of trial-and-error. With patience and perseverance, however, you can craft a one-of-a-kind vessel that has no equal anywhere in the world.

Free Boat Plans You Can Build This Week (with PDFs)

1. the wanigan.

PC Duckworks Boat Builders Supply

The Wanigan boat began as a garvey design, which is one of the older boat plans known to the Americas. Traditionally, these boats were built as work scows and were very popular among American summer camps.

The design itself is very simple, but these boats can carry heavy loads. It can also handle a trolling motor being mounted to the stern so you can cover more ground if you want to use it as a fishing boat.

The creator of this boat plan became aware of some of the downsides of the garvey design, such as the heavier weight that made it less efficient than some other designs. So he combined elements of dory and wanigan designs to create a hybrid.

The main changes include an enlarged beam, tilted lathes to provide a stiffer hull, and knocking off the top strakes to reduce the boat’s overall weight.

These additional The Wanigan drawings   may also prove useful for your build process!

2. The Mouse

small sailboat template

The Mouse is one of the most compact and nimble boat plans we have found for this list. It is an easy build and also a great boat for two kids or a single teenage paddler.

The original builder began with a one-sheet boat design in an effort to create the lightest and most affordable boat possible. This means it is only suited for calm waters and should not be used in high winds or wavy conditions.

That said, it was built in roughly 12 to 24 hours of work time and doesn’t require a full workshop to construct. The main material that is required for building this boat is quarter-inch plywood. But the builder recommends using one-inch by half-inch pine or something a little sturdier.

The plywood and pine components are held together using a method called ”˜stitch and glue’. This method requires choosing one of the best glues for kayak outfitting , which are typically made of epoxy and glass tape rather than something cheaper like polyurethane.

Also, here are a few extra useful The Mouse Notes for builders

3. The Slipper

small sailboat template

The Slipper is the first of many sailboat plans on our list and it is faster, easier, and cheaper to build than most. It also features a deeper cockpit than many other sailboat designs, which makes it safer for intermediate sailors.

This sailboat plan features dual steering stations so that you can sail from inside or outside of the helm. It also includes a centerboard trunk that hardly intrudes into the cabin at all. So that, it is easier to work around while you are in the cockpit.

The exterior hull and cabin of this sailboat feature a modified dory design using two sheets of plywood ripped to three feet wide before being joined together. The resulting hull is a modified V-shape that reduces drag.

The centerboard of this boat can also be winched up to the level of the top of the cabin or lowered down to alter the draft. This allows you to customize the boat design for a stiffer and more weather-worthy vessel if you need it.

The Slipper was also intentionally designed with an aft cabin that naturally helps to keep the bow pointed into the wind whether you are underway or the boat is anchored in the port.

4. The Handy Andy

small sailboat template

PC DIY Wood Boat

The Handy Andy is a great little 10-foot portable rowboat for hunting, camping, fishing, and other recreational uses. It is actually the only folding boat design on our list, which makes it best for folks that need the most portable boat plan possible.

This boat features a 42-inch beam and a depth of about 15 inches at the mid-section. It also weighs roughly 80 pounds when assembled and can handle up to three average-sized human passengers.

The design boasts a flat bottom with canvas-bound edges and the primary material used for construction is ⅜-inch marine-grade plywood. Despite its lightweight nature, this rowboat can handle trolling motors or even outboard motors with a maximum of five horsepower.

Once finished, the hull can be folded or unfolded in less than a minute’s time.

This design makes it one of the only boats on this list that can be stored in a truck bed or easily carried by two people to be launched at more remote locations.

5. The Junior

The Junior - Free Boat Plan

If you are looking for an all-purpose dinghy that can handle almost any use you might imagine, look no further than The Junior free boat plan. It can carry three or four average-sized adults and is much easier to row than a traditional dinghy.

It is also durable enough to be equipped with a small outboard motor. You could even set it up with sailing equipment if you want to use it as a sailing vessel. As we said, this is truly an all-around boat design!

This boat plan requires constructing three frames that will provide the majority of the load-bearing support. The builder recommends using ¾-inch framing with ⅜-inch plywood as the exterior material for this boat build.

Resin glue and flathead screws are also required to hold this boat together. But there is a full list of materials included in the plans we have linked to below. Sticking to that plan should also give you enough leftover materials to construct two six-foot oars for rowing this boat until you install a trolling motor or outboard motor down the line!

6. The Jolly Roger

small sailboat template

Channel your inner Captain Morgan when you are following these plans to build your very own Jolly Roger boat. This flat bottom boat design is designed for pond fishing . It can also be a useful yacht dinghy for getting from your dock to a larger vessel anchored offshore.

The plan follows conventional dinghy construction methods but also includes a few modifications that will save you time and energy. The wide design is super stable for boaters of all ages.

The keel, frame, chines, and risers are all cut from ¾-inch oak, ash, or any other trusted hardwood you can get your hands on. For the smaller components, the builder recommends using cedar, cypress, fir, or white or yellow pine.

Because this boat plan is also sturdy enough to handle a small motor, it includes important points for protecting the wooden hull from spark plug damage.

Be careful to follow these guidelines to build the safest boat possible if you imagine installing a motor down the line.

The Jollyroger

7. The Cork

small sailboat template

The Cork is another simple rowboat design. This one trends away from the flat bottom plans that we have included thus far. Instead, it features a deeper, V-shaped hull that makes it better suited to more efficient rowing and easier maneuverability.

It can be rowed easily from either seating position and is durable enough to handle up to three average-sized adult passengers. The ends of the boat are identical, which allows for multi-directional rowing.

The list of materials required for this boat plan should cost you between $30 and $50, depending on your location and hardware costs there. The resulting build is lightweight enough for two people to be carried and also to be transported on top of a vehicle .

Inside the boat, the builders use aluminum tubing to secure the struts that hold the seats. This material choice keeps the overall weight of the boat down while still adding the necessary rigidity across the beam of the boat.

8. The Hobby Kat

small sailboat template

The Hobie Cat is one of the most iconic and recognizable small sailing vessels ever made. This Hobby Kat plan is your answer to building your own iconic sailboat without spending thousands of dollars.

Your finished boat will be able to handle speeds of up to 20 miles per hour. It will be a super fun vessel for windy days on the lake or bay. The builder was able to construct the hulls, decking, and rudder for this boat while spending little more than $200.

From there, they purchased and installed the mast, boom, sail, and rigging, which brought the total amount spent to roughly $650 (still much less than a name-brand Hobie!). Without the mast and sail, this boat weighs roughly 165 pounds and is constructed using primarily 3/16-inch marine plywood.

You can also elect to build your own mast, boom, and sail if you have the time and skills to do so.

Those elements are not included in this boat plan, but they do offer some recommendations for where to buy these components!

The HobbyKat

9. The Tern

small sailboat template

Named after the common seabird found around the world, the Tern is a lightweight and nimble sailboat with a 72 square foot base design. She is made for inland sailing and planes very well in moderate breezes.

The hull design also provides minimal water resistance and the small floor plan makes this boat easier for intermediate sailors to handle. Even though it offers a small footprint, this boat is sturdy enough to handle up to four adult passengers.

One of the best things about this boat plan is that it can be built almost entirely by using only common hand tools.

Of course, you can speed things up if you have power tools and you are skilled enough to use them correctly.

The Tern boat plan includes a 20-foot mast, but you can shorten that length if you desire. The plan includes a complete list of materials and step-by-step instructions on how to plane and assemble each element.

10. The Falcon

small sailboat template

As you might expect from its name alone, the Falcon is an incredibly speedy sailboat for its size. It boasts a 14-foot centerboard and can handle two to four passengers, depending on its size and weight.

In tests of the original build, the creators claim that this boat out-distanced many Snipe and Comet sailing vessels as well as pacing evenly alongside longer 18-foot sailboats. When finished, your boat will have a six-foot beam and a total weight of roughly 475 pounds.

For the main framing components, they recommend using white oak and plywood will be the main material used in the hull construction. The hull features a V-shaped that was inspired by larger schooners.

The Falcon is best suited to sailing on bays, lakes, and wide rivers. It is also a boat plan with just under 120 square feet of deck space and it is a great build for amateur craftsmen and sailors.

11. The White Duck

small sailboat template

The White Duck is a flat-bottomed rowboat with a total length of 13’6” and a four-foot beam. The cockpit is approximately 15 inches deep all the way around and this boat can handle up to five passengers while maintaining buoyancy and stability.

When fully constructed, it will weigh roughly 200 pounds, but the final weight will depend on the type of lumber you choose for your build. This boat plan features plywood planking over solid wooden frames.

The White Duck is built with a pointed bow that cuts nicely through the water. The flat stern of this boat design will make it easy to attach a small outboard motor with a maximum of six horsepower.

As you might expect from its name, this rowboat is a great option for duck hunting trips. That being said, it is a highly versatile craft that can also be used for pond fishing or casual rowing on your nearby lake.

12. The Sea Midge

small sailboat template

The Sea Midge is one of the smallest rowboats on our list and it is ideally suited for one average-sized rower or two small paddlers. It is only about 8 feet in length and offers a 52-inch beam at its widest point.

The Midge’s small dimensions make her ideal for navigating narrower creeks and streams. With an approximate weight of 62 pounds, she is easy to maneuver on the water and can also be much more easily transported than some of the larger boat plans on our list

The Seamidge

13. The Zephyr

small sailboat template

The Zephyr is a compact and speedy dinghy sailboat that measures roughly 14 feet long and approximately five feet across. This boat style was originally developed for safely crossing the English Channel. This means it can stand up well in rough waters.

When finished, it is also light enough to be transported on a small trailer or on top of a larger vehicle.

The boat plan calls for using hemlock or fir for the framing and oak or Douglas fir for the keel and chines.

14. The Gypsy

small sailboat template

The Gypsy is a small cruising sailboat that is meant to be equipped with an outboard motor for powered locomotion. The original design resulted in an incredibly seaworthy vessel that logged more than 6,000 nautical miles in her lifetime.

It includes a comfortable cabin that makes it well-suited for multi-day sailing adventures. This boat plan includes improvements on the original design that will help you build an extremely durable and long-lasting sailboat.

The Gypsy boat design will help you construct a vessel that can handle a motor up to 25 horsepower so that you can enjoy cruising speeds of up to nine miles per hour.

While it may require a bit more of an investment in time and money, it will also help you produce one of the best boats you can build with a free boat plan!

15. The Crazy Cardboard Boat

small sailboat template

PC Saint Dominic Catholic School

Finally, let’s talk about a crazy cardboard boat plan that you can build in less than a day. This is a great boat plan to bookmark for your next teambuilding project so that you can earn bragging rights with your coworkers.

The plan calls for using 1.5 sheets of cardboard. But you can use the remaining half sheet to build your own boat paddle if you want to get creative.

Triple-thick cardboard is best for this boat plan. But you can always double up thinner sheets if that is all you can find.

These plans include an easy-to-follow diagram for marking, cutting, and folding the cardboard sheets to create the hull of your boat. From there, it calls for using contact cement and construction adhesive to seal the edges and corners.

If you are looking to save a little money on this build you could also use duct tape and then wrap the entire design in plastic sheeting to provide waterproof qualities.

Overall, this build is one of the cheapest and easiest on our list. It is also a great project for hot summer camp days on the lake or river!

Paper Plate Sailboat

Craft an easy mini sailboat using some basic materials— a paper plate, a craft stick, a toilet paper roll and some paper. Paint and decorate it into an awesome-looking sailboat. Make some paper people to ride in it too!

Supplies needed.

  • Paper plate
  • Craft stick or wooden dowel
  • Toilet paper roll
  • Poster paint, tempera, or acrylic paint
  • Paint brush
  • Crayons or colored markers
  • Stickers, buttons, etc. (optional)

Step 1 Paper Plate Sailboat

1 Cut a paper plate in half.

Fold a paper plate in half. Cut along the crease.

Step 2 Paper Plate Sailboat

2 Trim off the plate's curved bottom.

Stack the two halves together. While keeping them aligned, cut a straight line 2½ to 3 inches from the plate's straight edge.

Step 3 Paper Plate Sailboat

3 Assemble the boat.

Position the two halves facing each other so that they form a boat-like shape. Make sure that the edges are aligned, then staple or glue all four corners together.

Step 4 Paper Plate Sailboat

4 Paint the boat.

Paint the boat with a water-based paint like poster paint, tempera, or acrylic.

Step 5a Paper Plate Sailboat

5 Make a sail.

To make a triangular sail, you can start off with a square or a rectangular piece of paper.

a.)   Square - prepare a square sheet such as origami paper. Fold it diagonally in half to come up with a triangular sail.

Step 5b Paper Plate Sailboat

b.)   Rectangle - begin with a rectangular sheet like A4 or Letter-size paper. If you used a small paper plate to make your boat, you may need to cut the paper in half for a smaller sail.

Fold one top corner of the paper down to meet the opposite edge, forming a triangle. Cut and discard the excess paper below the triangle.

Step 6 Paper Plate Sailboat

6 Decorate the sail.

Use crayons, colored pencils or markers to decorate both sides of the sail. You can also put stickers or glue some paper cut-outs.

Step 7 Paper Plate Sailboat

7 Glue a craft stick.

Unfold the sail and apply glue on all four sides of the square. Position a large craft stick or a wooden dowel along one side.

Fold the square again along the diagonal crease. Press on the edges to glue them in place.

Step 8 Paper Plate Sailboat

8 Cut a slit on a TP roll.

About ¾" to 1" from one end of a TP roll, cut a slit just wide enough for your craft stick.

If you used a wooden dowel instead of a craft stick, make a small hole on the TP roll using the tip of a pencil. Make the hole just wide enough for the dowel to get through.

Step 9 Paper Plate Sailboat

9 Position the craft stick.

Insert the bottom end of the craft stick or dowel into the slit or hole. Push until it touches the bottom of the TP roll.

The stick should fit snugly inside the TP roll's slit. If the slit is too wide, put tape around the craft stick to keep the sail steady and upright.

Step 10 Paper Plate Sailboat

10 Put the TP roll in the boat.

Place the TP roll inside the boat. The roll should fit snugly. If it does not, glue the sides of the TP roll to the inside of the paper plate boat.

Step 11 Paper Plate Sailboat

11 Add more detail.

You can further decorate your boat, if you like. Glue some buttons or foam shapes. To get your sailing theme going, make paper cut-outs of anchors, life savers, or flags. You can also draw and cut out paper people to ride on your awesome sailboat.

Though your boat looks all set for sailing, it is not made to float on water. Take it for a fun pretend sailing adventure instead!

Die Cut Sailboats – Summer Cut Files

It’s summer, and there is no better time to set sail on a new adventure! I’ve got just what you need to shove off. Use my latest template to make seaworthy, and super cute, die cut sailboats!

Die Cut Sailboats

Like this design? Consider leaving a tip .

A couple weeks ago, we went on a family road trip to the Redwoods and the Oregon Coast. Everything was so beautiful, and we had a wonderful time! Of course, missing a few 100° days here in Utah was a pretty nice perk too.

We spent some time in Newport, Oregon, and enjoyed going to the beach, seeing sea lions, and hanging out at the harbor. It’s not too often that you get a chance to see boats like these where we live!

  • Bone Folder (optional)
  • A Cutting Machine or X-ACTO knife

How to Make It

1. Use your cutting machine or X-ACTO knife, along with my template, to cut out all of the die cut sailboat pieces.

Note: If you are using the SVG files that includes the score lines, don’t forget to set them as such in Cricut Design Space and attach them to their shapes before sending them through your cutting machine. I used a lime green color to mark the score lines, so hopefully that helps! If you’re having trouble with the score lines, check out this video .

small sailboat template

2. Layer your small sail pieces together and add any decorative embellishments you’d like to the body of your boat.

Cut your kabob sticks to the size you want. I cut the longer one to 4″ and the shorter one to 2″. Attach the flag to the top of the longer stick.

Add some hot glue to the edge of the smaller sail, and attach it to the longer stick, below the flag. Then, glue on the crossbeam and attach the larger sail, allowing it to bend in the middle.

3. Fold the body section of the boat along with the tabs. Glue the tabs to the inside.

Attach the little piece with the hole to the center of the boat by gluing the two tabs to the inside walls.

Put the bottom of the kabob stick through the hole, and glue it to the bottom of the boat. Finally, add a little bit of string or baker’s twine to finish off your sailboat!

I am really proud of how these little boats turned out! This is definitely one of those projects that crafters of all ages can enjoy.

I designed these to be pretty small (about 4″x4″), but you can easily scale them up in your cutting machine software if you’d like to make a bigger boat!

Thanks so much Mandee! The sailing boats look adorable!! I recently purchased a Cricut Maker machinel I am just having extreme diffiuclty finding decent books of solid colours of cardstock and am truly feeling despond as I am truly wanting to start making things with my Cricut. Living in Australia can actually be very limiting when you want to purchase products for a special project-I kid you not! Cheers anyway Mandee and stay well and safe. Best regards from Michele Unsworth

I’m glad you like them Michele! Sorry to hear that you are having trouble finding a good mix of paper. I’m definitely no expert in where to get the best paper in Australia, but I wish you good luck!! It’s something I definitely hoard, and hit a lot of different stores in order to keep my supply up.

Boat Template: FREE Printable Template

13th July 2023 by Kate Williams Leave a Comment

All aboard with this free printable boat template that’s perfect for kids crafts!

Boats are a popular subject all year round, you can use them for learning about transportation and ocean crafts or even if you are looking at pirates! They’re a great way to encourage your child’s imagination too as you can use them as a writing prompt – where is your boat sailing too and what will they discover?

Our PDF file has three different designs for you to download and they’re all free. You can print as many copies as you like so they’re perfect for using in classrooms, preschools or kindergartens as well as for at home.

What You'll Find on This Page

Boat Template

Boats are often a subject that’s really popular with kids because they’re something that they might see about a lot but don’t normally get to use them in the same way as you would use a car. You might see a boat at the beach or play with toy boats but most of us don’t have our own one.  I think that adds that bit of magic to them?

Add to that the fact that you can use boats for exploring and that makes them a great topic to help encourage your child’s imagination and creativity, you can have your boat at the seaside, sailing to a deserted island, surrounded by whales and dolphins, crewed by pirates… the list goes on and on!

The PDF file for this template contains three different designs. The first is a basic boat outline that’s ideal for decorating. The second design also includes some water under the boat and the third design has three portholes on the boat.

Boat Craft Ideas

Coloring – Of course you can use this as a boat coloring sheet. All you need to do is print out the design that you want and use your crayons, coloring pencils or markers to color it in.

Tissue Paper Sea – If you’ve colored in your boat why not add some sea with a little bit of texture? Tear strips of blue tissue paper and glue them to the bottom of the page. If you want to add more why not glue on some cotton balls to make some clouds in the sky.

Stickers – Not only are stickers a great way to help support your child’s fine motor skills but they’re something that are normally super popular with kids as well. Choose stars, spots or ocean themed stickers and use them to decorate you boat’s sail.

Torn Paper – Tearing paper is a really fun way to decorate your design and it’s a great way to use up any old scraps of colored paper that you have too. Simply tear paper into pieces before sticking it onto your boat. This will possibly look better if you go for similar colors on each part of the boat (eg a brown hull) but if you want a rainbow colored sail then you go for it!

More Free Printable Vehicle Craft Templates

I’ve shared so many free templates on this site that it can be difficult to remember them all but I do know that vehicle craft templates are some that I’ve really enjoyed sharing recently and I hope that you’re finding them helpful too!

Whether you’re a parent or teacher you’ll know that kids activities can add up very quickly so what I love about these resources is that all you need is a printer and a quick look through what craft supplies you already have to make something creative and fun together.

Every time I share a craft template you’ll find a few ideas with it to help you think of art and craft projects you might want to try or of course you can always use these as vehicle coloring sheets too.

These are some of the most recent designs that we’ve shared but do take a look through and see what else you can find, these would look amazing on a things that go themed bulletin board!

When I think of vehicles the first thing that I think of is cars and our car template has two designs that you can decorate.

This helicopter template is our newest addition and I love the different designs perfect for designing your own helicopter.

I love this digger template that would work perfectly for learning about construction too.

Step-by-step summer sailboat silhouette art tutorials:.

Step one: image showing a hand painting the sun yellow.

How to Paint to the Sun

To begin, prepare the paint palette. Add different shades of yellow, orange, red and blue, as well as white and black.

Using yellow and orange hues, paint the sun like a rainbow by following the arch shape. Start with the lightest shade of yellow and progress to deep orange hues.

Step 2: Image showing a hand painting the second part of the sun orange.

Blend Yellow and Orange Shades

Using the sun as a mixing palette, layer different shades of yellow and orange; continuing to move the paintbrush back and forth across the layers to blend the colors.

Add white to lighten the colors.

Ideally, the darkest shades will be positioned at the bottom of the sun, where the sun meets the sea.

Step 3: Image showing a hand painting the first sun ray at the top of the page a blend of yellow and orange hues.

Paint the First Sun Ray

While the sun focusses on different shades of yellow and orange, the sun rays present an opportunity to explore the full spectrum of warm colors – these are colors that derive from red, yellow and orange.

Step 4: Image showing a hand painting a sun ray a blend of pink and red shades, mixed with a little yellow.

Explore Warm Hues

Paint each ray with a blend of red, yellow and orange, creating light and dark shades of each color.

Start with the lightest shades first, using short paint strokes to create the impression of lines (rays of color) traveling away from the sun.

Progress from light to dark and continue layering the paint strokes – can your Arty Crafty Kids describe the effect this creates?

Image 5: Image showing hands painting the remainder of the sun rays various shades of yellow, pink and red.

Complete the Sun Rays

Continue painting until the rays are bursting with colors!

While this tutorial features sun rays with multiple colors and blends, the rays may also be painted in block colors i.e one shade of red, orange, yellow, orange-red, pink etc. The end result will be just as effective and is a simple adaptation for younger Arty Crafty Kids.

Image 6: Image showing hands painting part of the white space beneath the sunset blue.

How to Paint the Sea

Let’s move onto the cool colors ( colors that derive from shades of green, blue and purple).

Begin by framing the “sea” area with dark shades of blue.

Step 7: Image showing hands painting a yellow and orange reflection into the white space.

How to Paint a Sunset Reflection and Create Perspective

Before progressing with the remainder of the sea, add a few paint strokes of yellow and orange into the white space directly below the sun. To create a sense of the perspective, the lines closest to sun should start wide and become narrower as they move away from the sun.

Adding a reflection to the water is a great way to introduce perspective to young artists.

small sailboat template

Blend and Create Different Shades of Blue

With the beginnings of the reflection painted, fill the surrounding white space with different shades of blue. Add white to lighten the blue.

small sailboat template

The Sea Meets the Sunset

Where the final sun rays meet the sea, paint a layer of red on top of the blue sea and mix to form a shimmer. The mix of blue and red will create gorgeous purple hues.

small sailboat template

Use Simple Dry Brush Strokes to Merge the Reflection and Sea

Add a small amount of blue paint to a dry fine tipped paintbrush and brush it away the body of blue sea into the sun ray. The dry brush will make it difficult for the paint to spread and the strokes will need to be fairly forceful. The benefit of this technique is that it helps to merge the reflection into the sea without too much secondary color mixing – as well know that yellow and blue makes green!

The strokes will also be fairly bold in color, however slightly broken as the paint struggles to spread, allowing the color underneath (white or the sunset shimmer colors) to peak through.

Watch both video tutorials to this technique in action!

small sailboat template

Paint the Sailboat Silhouettes

The sunset seascape painting element is complete! leave the painting to thoroughly dry and move onto the sailboats. Paint the silhouettes black or any color/design of the Arty Crafty Kids choosing.

small sailboat template

Glue the Sailboat Silhouettes to the Seascape Scene

Carefully cut out the painted sailboat silhouettes.

small sailboat template

Next, glue the sailboat onto the seascape scene.

The First Sailboat Silhouette Art Tutorial is Complete

I hope your Arty Crafty Kids enjoy exploring and playing with cool and warm colors, learning a few simple techniques to create perspective in art and making this summertime project their own!

The seascape templates are open to all sorts of mediums, including oil pastels, watercolor paints and crayons (to name a few).

Our second seascape template is open to interpretation – the round, central circle could present as a sun or moon, with the Summer blue sky swapped for a twilight night with a shining moon and twinkly stars.

To see an alternative “sunset’ painting technique to try with your Arty Crafty Kids, take a quick look at this video tutorial. It also demonstrates how to use dry paint strokes to merge the sunset reflections within the sea.

Back Issues for Sale

"Popular Science" magazine and "Popular Mechanics" back issues can be viewed online at Google Books.

All these free boat plans can be built by anyone with a common sense modicum and a few basic woodworking skills and tools. However, if you have not got the skills and tools yet, this is a great way to acquire them.

One of the beauties of building yourself is that you do not have to buy everything at once, just get what you need when you can afford it.

While some of the instructions suggest using exterior plywood, I would always recommend using marine grade.

If you need help with lofting out the plans click here for an article here which should help.

Canoe Free Boat Plans

canoe plans

Combining the features of both kayak and canoe, "Blue Bill" is for those out-of-doors-men who hunt or the sportsmen who need an ultra-light-weight portable boat for use upon any waters.

Besides being usable to build a double-end paddling model, a few changes permit the plans to be used for making a canoe that will accommodate outboard motors up to 6 hp. for swift, speedy transportation on any stream or waterway.

Weighing only 75 lbs. complete, "Blue Bill" is easily transported atop an auto anywhere.

Canvasback canoe plans

This kayak is the answer for young people who want to build an inexpensive boat for summer fun. A shop full of power tools is not necessary, either. All the work can be done with ordinary hand tools and a few C clamps. This Free Boat Plan will carry one adult but it's handiest when paddled by a youngster. The boat is stable in the water and, even though it can be turned over, it will not sink. It's also light enough to be carried with ease. Building is so simple that the 'Jig' consists of only two blocks and a few bricks.

Hunting Kayak

Hunting Kayak canoe plans

For many years a favorite of hunters, trappers and traders the kayak now is as popular with Europeans as the outboard boat is with Americans.

Although this boat was designed to carry two people, it will accommodate three in a pinch and gear may be stowed under fore and after decks.

A few strokes with the double paddle will send it gliding across the water with the minimum of effort on your part.

Kayaks are surprisingly seaworthy, too — more stable than a canoe, in fact, because the occupants sit on the bottom of the hull which lowers the center of gravity.

Pintail and 10ft Duck Boat

Pintail

'Pintail' drawn from plans by Wm D Jackson is another of the Free Boat Plans from the 'Boat Builder Handbook'. This one is being built by Greg Allore .

glid easy canoe plan

If you have ever struggled with the oars of a heavy, slow-moving rowboat and then paddled a swift, high maneuverable canoe you can appreciate why many true sportsmen prefer canoes.

But, too often, the multi-ribbed conventional canoe is not only hard to build but too thin-skinned for hard usage.

This Free Boat Plan teams up plywood and fiberglass to produce a tough, scrape-proof canoe you can build in one-tenth the time it would take you to turn out a conventional canoe.

The use of only one frame offsets the extra weight of using plywood, so that this canoe is still light enough for comfortable portage.

Little Chief

free canoe plans

Little Chief is a canoe with many virtues, ideally adapted to quick, easy construction.

Canoes are not easy to build, but here is one Free Boat Plan that can be made of ordinary materials for a fraction of the cost of conventional canoes.

It has attractive molded lines and may be built either as a paddling model or, with slight changes, adapted for use with small outboard motors.

free wooden canoe plans

In all countries of the world, particularly the United States, the kayak is enjoying newfound popularity.

Here's a nimble, lightweight craft that has its roots in the Arctic as a basic instrument of survival, yet is branching out as a modern outdoor sport on our own rivers and lakes.

To the Eskimo, a kayak is more than a boat.

When he's laced into his whale-bone and walrus-hide craft, he's ready for anything in the way of water or weather.

To most of us, however, a kayak is pure adventure and fun.

It's perfect for poking around uninhabited Islands, exploring the bends of a lazy, winding river, or just breaking the peaceful surface of a placid lake at sunset.

Redwood Canoe

canoe free plans

You can build this 74lb, 16 foot canoe using redwood strips, an old boat-building technique.

Two persons can sit side by side in the center with one person at each end and plenty of room for gear.

This canoe is formed around plywood templates using redwood strips glued edge to edge.

You lay up the strips, remove the form, and the canoe is complete, except for fiberglassing and putting in the seats.

The plans can also be used to build a 13-foot version of this strip planked canoe.

Houseboat Free boat Plans

Budget houseboat (trailerable).

Budget-Houseboat plans

The Budget Houseboat is like a camper that goes on water.

She's 20 ft. long with a 9-ft. beam, containing 300 sq. ft. of usable floor area.

This means that while she can accommodate two in outrageous comfort, she can easily take a family of four on an extended vacation and be entirely self-contained.

There are two full-size permanent bunks in the forward section of the cabin.

The dining table, in the rear section of the cabin, seats four and then drops down to convert into an extra bunk 6 ft. 4 in. long and 38 in. wide.

Cabin headroom is 6 ft. 2 in., and two cots can be stationed to the rear of the cabin area.

Bayou Belle

Bayou Belle houseboat plans

Bayou Belle is a 25' scow that can be built as a sports utility, a fishing boat, or a houseboat, depending on your requirements for pleasure offshore.

As a sports utility, she can be used for towing water skiers and for cruising, as a fishing boat, she offers a stable platform with plenty of elbow room and stowage space.

As a houseboat, she has roomy interior accommodations for a leisurely life afloat.

Construction of Bayou Belle makes use of prefabricated sections, which means that much of the work can be done indoors in the average garage during the cold winter months, and the boat completed outdoors in time for launching in late spring.

Float-A-Home

Float-A-Home houseboat plans

A houseboat is a unique water craft in that it combines most of the comforts of home with the mobility of a boat.

Of course, use is limited to sheltered waters, and speeds are slow in comparison to more sea worthy vessels.

Float-A-Home is a 21-footer that provides plenty of living space for three or four persons.

An extremely simple houseboat to build, the free boat plans feature a strong hull with a heavy keel and close-spaced framing.

This, coupled with a relatively low profile, makes it a very stable craft.

Some projects are most satisfying to work on in batches. These paper boats are like that. They are quick and easy and you can make a bunch at once without much extra effort. Plus the finished group is very satisfying.  You probably already have most of the materials you need and you could easily be hanging a respectable fleet by the end of the day, who doesn’t want that?

download the boat template

You will also need:.

  • heavy paper (I’m using water color paper) or light cardboard (like poster board)
  • a bamboo skewer
  • paper for the sail
  • elmer’s glue
  • embroidery thread or light string (like baker’s twine)
  • paints, brushes  and/or collage materials
  • exacto knife
  • clothespins or paperclips for clamping

*Please read through all the steps before beginning.

*Also note I included some simple directions on the sail template for your convenience  but the directions below include more details and options.

make an easy paper sailboat

1.  Cut out the boat and mast support templates and trace them onto light cardboard or a heavy weight paper. I’m Using water color paper (140 pound hot press is my favorite). Optional – paint both sides. I almost always paint a wash of water color on both sides of the boat and mast support.

2. Place the template back on the boat and poke your pencil through where the score lines intersect. Mark with a dot. Remove the template and draw on the score lines. Draw the score lines on the mast support too and mark an X on the center of the top section.

small sailboat template

3. Use the back of an x-acto knife to score the lines on the boat and  mast support.

4. Gently fold the boat and mast support at the score lines.

paper sailboat how to

5. Add glue to the last section of the mast support, fold it into a triangle and glue the top section over it.

6. Clamp with paper clip or clothespins while it dries.

make a paper boat

7. While your mast support dries paint or collage or draw on your boat. I did all three. I used a wash of watercolor, some pencil lines and a little collage. If you’re doing lots of collage I recommend using nori paste instead of blue stick . It is awesome. You can find it here . * FYI – this is an affiliate link – meaning I get a small commission if you purchase through the link.

8. Apply glue to the bow as indicated on the template.

9. Fold the boat together at the front and clamp with clothespins or paper clips while the glue dries.  Alternatively – you can skip the glue, bring the front sides together and stitch on the sewing machine close to the edge.

10. Fold the center back ( A on the template) and apply glue to the top.

how to make a paper ship

11. Bend up tab B – covering the top of tab A and matching the top edges. Apply glue and bend up tab C covering the top of tab B and matching the top edges. Clamp and let dry. Alternatively – skip the glue and attach the three layers with a stitch and a button (step 16 below).

easy paper boat project

12. Use and xacto knife to poke an X at through the center of the mast support.

13. Snip iff the tip of your skewer and insert it into the hole – push it all the way to the bottom of the mast support. Make sure it is straight and add glue (lots) to the insertion point. Let it dry, mast support end up.

paper boat sail

14. Cut out a sail and flag from paper. Poke a hole at the center of the top and bottom and insert the mast through the holes.

paper boat sail

15. Cut a 36 inch length of embroidery thread or fine string (like baker’s twine) and tie a loop in the center.  Apply glue to the top 1/2 inch of the mast and wind the tails on to attach. This leaves most of the strings hanging down below.

how to make a paper boat

16. Add a button at the back. Use a large needle to poke a hole through all the layers and ties on a button. Poke a hole through the tip of the bow as well and tie on one or two buttons.

how to make a paper boat

17. Fold the flag in half, unfold it and apply glue stick. Fold it over the mast. Press the sides together and if you like trim and curl the ends.

how to make a paper boat

18. Place the mast support into the boat. You can glue it in place or use the strings to attach hold it in place (see below).

free paper boat project

19. Hold (or glue) the mast support in the boat and wind the strings around the buttons.  To add flags fold a 1 inch strip of paper in half the long way and cut into flags, open the flag, apply glue stick and fold over the strings.

I hope you make lots of paper boats! And for variety you can mess around with the sail configurations, scale and the edges of the boat template. If you make boats I’d love to see – please use #annwoodpattern on instagram or email a photo to me at info at ann wood handmade dot com.

Thanks so much, Ann. I was recently wondering what new thing I could make with my paper, stamps and watercolors.

So exciting to share with my grandchildren, thank you!

This is lovely – thank you for sharing.

I can’t wait to make these! I made a big fleet of the paper boat ornaments last Christmas as gifts. I’ve been wanting to make boats to keep. This is it! Thank you so much!

This is a wonderful project! Thank you so much for sharing. Love your blog, I always take time to read through, “and smell the roses”.

Love them! What is the little connector you have used to connect them to the string that is holding them up to the ceiling? Thank you as always……

Thanks Gail! I put a little button on the end of each string so I could move the boats around easily when I was arranging them. Just slip the loop at the top of the boat over the button to hang.

You let our imaginations set sail upon a sea of dreams. A perfect ship for my little spool and button dolls to sail away. Thank you!

I am quite sure that I will be making some little boats in the near future!

What a lovely place to create, that library and cabin and the scenery look so peaceful and inspiring.

For some reason I have never commented before, not sure what that is as I have enjoyed your blog a lot, and I think I have made about twenty of your little tiny rag dolls now! The first three made just after you first published the pattern, the rest I’ve made this year. Just made the jacket last night and my newest one ‘Clipper’ loves it.

Thank you for your generosity in sharing these marvellous patterns.

I so ♥ this, and the fact that you are still blogging & making fun tutorials Ann! So many bloggers have stopped and I miss them all!

I recently printed the pattern for the needle case and will make myself one soon, with fabric inherited from my grandmother.

This post got me started on a most enjoyable series of paper mache boats using your “Dear Little Boats” pattern – thank you for being so generous with your creativity.

Dear Ann, How generous of you to share such detailed instructions for free! I haven’t had the courage yet to make a ship, but I am much inspired. Thank you for the lovely world, mood, spirit, and community you have created with this faithful, long-running blog. It is balm and a well of inspiration for creative, like-minded souls. Blessings, Hollyann

So so elegant simple and beutifull

I am finishing up my little wire bed for mouse. I am having so much fun! You’d think I was a little girl or teenager, and not a 73 year young women. Great to be able to do whatever you want to do.

[…] Quote from the source: … […]

I have made these mini boats and people love them. The instructions are clear and easy to follow and the result is precious.

Step 2: Staple and Cut Out the Paper Ship Craft Shapes

boat printable by Crafting Jeannie

Once you have the print outs, staple them to construction paper and cut out the shapes you need.

Note: If you want to make this craft with a group of kids, you can staple the template to up to 10 sheets of copy paper, 5 sheets of cardstock or 5-8 sheets of construction paper.

So, did you know that you can staple together 10 pieces of copy paper and cut out 10 shapes at a time?! That’s my  SECRET  to fast & easy crafting. Stapling the paper is very important because it makes sure it doesn’t move as you cut. The more staples the better. Cardstock is the thickest so you may only be able to cut 5 sheets at a time.

Tip: While you’re cutting, if you cut off all parts of the pages that have staples, make sure to re-staple the sheets that are left.  Whenever you’re cutting multiple sheets at a time, make sure they are always stapled together!

Step 3: How to Assemble

Boat Craft by Crafting Jeannie

I recommend having a finished boat so the children can see what the final version will look like.

  • Glue the wheel house behind the top of the boat.
  • Glue the white window onto the wheel house.
  • Glue the life preserver ring onto the boat wherever you like.
  • Next, glue the colored circle into the center of the li.
  • Optional: Glue the white pinstripe rectangle onto the body of the boat.
