An aft cockpit version is called the WESTSAIL 43. Both come from the same hull mold. A number of rigs were available including cutter, ketch and yawl. After Westsail closed, Jomarco built 3 hulls.

Re: Opinions on the Westsail 42 Ketch. I met Walter Cronkite once when he brought his W 42 into the dock in Annapolis 30-some years ago. He had a wood captain's chair installed in the cockpit where he sat during docking maneuvers. Walter was just as uptight while tying up in a crosswind as any other owner.

Notes. Said to be based on the THISTLE design from William Atkin and adapted for fiberglass by William Crealock for Kendall Yacht Corp. (1967). An earlier design, the KENDALL 32, has a flush deck. Westsail added the trunk cabin. Of the 834 hulls built, the first 31 being Kendall 32's, some 400 were sold as kits or bare hulls.

The 32-foot Eric design by Atkins from 1925 is where the fairly tubby Westsail 32 got its start. Bill Crealock later modified it to take advantage of fibreglass production techniques.
