62.5m Apogee Captain John on Chartering After COVID

By Jenna Mehdi

The 62.5m Codecasa-built superyacht Apogee has been docked in the Dania Canal in Fort Lauderdale for the past seven months. As her Captain of 17 years John Fleck tells us, this is the first time since being delivered in 2003 that the seminal charter yacht has not enjoyed a European summer season. The luxury yacht and her crew are now looking forward to making up for lost time this New Year charter season in the Bahamas and Caribbean as restrictions are eased. We caught up with Captain John to learn more about the luxurious experience guests can expect from a New Year’s charter onboard Apogee, including the heightened measures of safety the crew will be taking to ensure utter peace of mind at sea.

Apogee is the ultimate charter yacht. Attended by some 17 crew members, Apogee’s onboard experience is defined by rich and decadent interiors, a fully equipped gym and even her own private night club. And the yacht’s crew have not been resting on their laurels these past seven months either, Captain John tells us:

‘The upkeep of the vessel is of the highest interest to the owner. He simply loves and adores the boat - we have actually just had a new 70-inch AK television installed up in the bridge bar while being docked here.’

Despite her high levels of maintenance though (Apogee underwent an extensive refit in 2019), the unique appeal of this superyacht lies in her progressive in-built volume - remarkable even for a yacht of 62.5m, Captain John tells us. ‘ She was a little ahead of her time - main aft decks were shortened on Northern European boats, and when we bought the boat we opted out of an enclosed main aft deck . Which left us with a large area which easily accommodates all the guests in comfort under cover in open air.’

With three outdoor decks available to guests, there is certainly no shortage of socialising or entertainment space on this purpose-built charter yacht.

'She boasts four cabins down below, two of which have king sized beds. ‘ The volume is also obvious in the lower guest cabins , that it would be very difficult for anybody to go back to a 50m boat after experiencing that feeling of space.’

So difficult in fact that very often, guests will not charter any other boat.

Apogee enjoys a number of repeat clients, which John tells us is testament as much to the appeal of the boat as it is to the success of her crew - a number of whom have served between 10 and 15 years onboard.

‘Clients have that full experience when chartering Apogee, which is something of an Apogee signature. The owner is very personally concerned about the experience of the guests, he always aims to ensure he has the right crew front of house to take care of them.’

To illustrate the advantage of Apogee’s extensive and doting crew, Captain John told us of one party of repeat clients with a very particular request. ‘ They wanted to swim in a new location every morning at 9am - the challenge being that we had to travel overnight every night. But that wasn’t an issue for us with 17 crew onboard; we can very easily run the boat and provide 24/7 service to our guests.’

When Apogee’s Christmas and New Year charter season gets underway, she will return to the Bahamas and Caribbean to catch some winter sun. We asked Captain John about the revamped measures of safety guests could expect during this time.

‘We’ve had plenty of practice while we’ve been here in Fort Lauderdale! We’ve adopted measures you will see in the commercial industry with safety, health and operations onboard. For example, where our boarding ladder is, we have an upright hand gel dispenser for all guests. Products wise, everything will undergo a strict sanitation process as we bring items onboard.’

Apogee’s crew will also be assigning two deputies - another luxury afforded a crew as sizable and experienced as this. ‘ That way there will be watchful eyes throughout guiding the safety protocols.’

However, Captain John and his doting crew have been going the extra mile for some time now. John tells us that Apogee’s crew has a forward-looking practice of sending out advance teams to guests’ locations of choice, to ensure standards and requirements are met ahead of the guests’ arrival.

‘This affords us the added advantage of understanding the safety and wellbeing of our guests - the crew are playing an active part onboard as well as off the boat.

Apogee comes perfectly maintained, well equipped and ready to make up for lost time this New Year charter season. We would like to wish her and her committed crew a very smooth and successful season.

Apogee is available for charter with TWW Yachts , to book a luxury charter onboard this vessel please contact [email protected] .

"Clients have that full experience when chartering Apogee, which is something of an Apogee signature. The owner is very personally concerned about the experience of the guests..." Captain John Fleck

The list of Dallasites who own yachts is a short one. When Jerry Jones recently bought the 360-foot Bravo Eugenia for $250 million, I asked someone who would know this sort of thing how many yacht owners he could name in town. After Jones, there’s the other Jerry, Ford. He’s got the 190-foot Diamond (like his racing stables). In the winter, you can rent it for $270,000 per week (plus expenses). Nancy Rogers’ Instagram feed might lead you to believe she owns a yacht, but I think that’s a rental. Same for Carl Westcott. Phil Romano used to own a yacht named Lily Pad , named after his then wife. But it was only about 100 feet, and it and the marriage are no more.

Which brings us to Darwin Deason. The last — and only — time I talked to the billionaire founder of computer services firm ACS was in 2003, for this story that involved a 118-foot yacht named the Cartoush II . He upgraded after that. Now he’s got a 200-foot yacht called Apogee , and it’s on the market. Here’s a fun Forbes piece set aboard the boat, which he’s asking  $25 million for. A bargain!  This says the boat is worth $50 million.

Here’s my idea: Phillip Jones at VisitDallas should buy the Apogee . Apparently no one over there is paying much attention to expense reports. The $25 million wouldn’t be noticed. Then he could park that thing out at White Rock Lake and use it as the new Dallas visitors’ center. That’s what he’ll call it. But really it will be his personal floating triathlon training center. Can’t you just see the Peloton ad with a glistening Jones pedaling away on the foredeck?

Anyway, just some yacht talk to start your Thursday.

What Amenities are Included on Superyachts?

Owning a superyacht is a sign of wealth and prestige, and many of the worlds most prominent billionaires have their own vessels.

How Much Do Superyachts Cost?

who owns apogee yacht

When it comes to superyachts, the sky is the limit when it comes to cost.

These luxury vessels come with hefty price tags that can range from anywhere between $30 million to over $400 million.

So, if youre in the market for a superyacht, youre looking at an investment that could easily break the bank.

The cost of a superyacht is driven by a variety of factors, including size, amenities, and customization.

Generally, the larger the yacht, the more expensive it will be.

Superyachts typically range in size from 100 feet to over 200 feet, and they can be as wide as 40 feet.

The bigger the yacht, the more luxurious features and amenities it will have.

Amenities also play a significant role in the cost of a superyacht.

While some owners prefer to keep their yachts out of the public eye, others have made headlines with their extensive amenities.

From swimming pools and helicopter pads to on-board cinemas and spas, the sky is the limit when it comes to customizing a superyacht.

The more amenities a superyacht has, the more expensive it will be.

Finally, customization is another major factor that will drive up the cost of a superyacht.

Many luxury vessels have custom-designed interiors that are tailored to the owners tastes.

From custom furniture and artwork to lighting and audio systems, the cost of a superyacht can quickly escalate depending on the level of customization.

In short, the cost of a superyacht can vary widely depending on its size, amenities, and customization.

While some may be able to get away with spending a few million dollars, others may end up spending hundreds of millions of dollars on their dream yacht.

No matter what your budget is, its important to do your research and find out exactly what youre getting for your money before signing on the dotted line.

Keeping Superyachts Out of the Public Eye

When it comes to owning a superyacht, some owners prefer to keep their vessels out of the public eye.

Understandably, these individuals are concerned with privacy and discretion, and therefore tend to take measures to ensure their yachts are not visible to outsiders.

For instance, some superyacht owners opt to keep their vessels in private marinas, away from the public areas of larger ports.

Additionally, some yacht owners may choose to hire security guards to patrol and protect their vessels while they are moored or sailing.

In addition to physical security, some superyacht owners also use technology to keep their vessels out of the public eye.

For example, a yacht owner may choose to install a satellite-based communications system that allows them to keep their vessel completely off-radar.

This system works by bouncing signals off satellites rather than transmitting them, making it virtually impossible for anyone to track the yachts movements.

Finally, some superyacht owners also choose to limit the number of people who have access to their vessels.

For instance, the owner may only allow family members and close friends to board the yacht.

Additionally, the owner may choose to employ a limited number of staff to help maintain the vessel and keep it running smoothly.

These individuals may be required to sign non-disclosure agreements to ensure they do not disclose any information about the yacht or its owner.

Overall, while some superyacht owners may choose to keep their vessels out of the public eye, there are still plenty of other ways to show off the opulence associated with owning a superyacht.

From swimming pools and helicopter pads to on-board cinemas and spas, there are many luxurious amenities that can make a superyacht the envy of any jet setter.

Final Thoughts

Superyachts are a symbol of luxury and status, and the list of yacht owners reads like a who’s who of billionaires.

From the Emir of Qatar’s world-record breaking $400 million yacht to Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen’s vessel with a helicopter pad and on-board spa, the amenities of these luxury vessels are truly stunning.

With prices ranging from $30 million to over $400 million, owning a superyacht is an expensive endeavor.

Whether you’re looking to purchase one or just curious to learn more about the owners and their amenities, this guide will provide you with all the information you need to stay up to date with the superyacht scene.

With a guest-to-crew ratio of 12 to 17, it’s not hard to imagine why Apogee’s guests keep returning to captain John Fleckenstein and his team year after year. Captain John has been with Apogee since the beginning, and is no stranger to delivering superior experiences around the world.

“Our crew is what really sets us apart,” explains Captain John. “I have been with the boat since she was built in Italy at Codecasa in 2003, and I truly believe our team is the best. Our crew retention rate is impeccable, and something of a rarity in the world of luxury yachting.”

MY Apogee 1200x800 Superyacht Stories

“Apogee is a charter yacht with personality,” says Captain John Fleckenstein. “That personality is built on experience, openness and maturity.” Delivered in 2003, charter superstar Apogee has been a favourite in the luxury charter yacht market for almost two decades. Led by Captain John since the very beginning, along with his dedicated crew of 16, Apogee delivers superior superyacht experiences around the world for groups of friends and family looking for the very best.

The perfect yacht for the ultimate family getaway, her long list of facilities includes a fully equipped gym, an elevator, private night club, limo tender and a huge array of water toys, all complemented by the impeccable service of an experienced crew. “Our two stewards have families; I have a family. We understand what it takes to create a fantastic family experience,” says Captain John. Here we delve into exactly makes a charter experience on board Apogee stand out from the crowd.

What makes Apogee a unique charter yacht?

Our crew is what really sets us apart. I have been with the boat since she was built in Italy at Codecasa in 2003, and every charter has been unique which requires experienced and energetic crew. With Apogee we have a great platform to work with, including plenty of toys and more social areas than most yachts which gives guests so many options for their time on board and shows off the teamwork and expertise of our crew to the full.

Together we’re a team of 17, and we’re professionals at what we do. At any one time we will have three or four junior interior crew working underneath an experienced team member. It’s a valuable asset to have a well-oiled machine. More than that though, each of our crew members brings with them a flair to what they’re doing. Being greeted by the vibrant personalities of our breakfast stewardesses is the loveliest way to start your day.

MY Apogee 1200x800 Superyacht Stories 2

What kind of charter experience can guests expect?

A fun charter on a quality boat with a professional crew! Apogee welcomes guests to a conventional American layout and styling, and throughout the boat there is a big focus on space and entertainment. The bridge deck bar lounge is a great area: we have done poker nights, casino nights, choreography dancing with kids for their parents. It’s a really fun area that we use a lot for these purposes. Equally it can be used in the evening as the lounge that everybody gathers in for an aperitif before moving to the bridge deck aft for alfresco dining.

There are no tenders on deck, so the available deck space to guests is pretty much unmatched in these sections of the charter yacht market, and there’s massive volume for guests.

How do the crew go above and beyond for each guest?

One of the best things that we offer is a fantastic, full package. Our deck hand Willy has been with us for 17 years, and he’s been by my side since the launch party. His value is with his contribution of AV, whether that be computers, photography or making video content. He plays a part with all of our charter trips, and we produce a short movie for the guests. The film is a compilation of still photos, underwater photography, drone footage, GoPro shots from the Waverunners and footage of the vessel underway. We’ll take a crew member on excursions to capture that special experience, and in the end, guests have this fantastic video of their entire holiday. It’s something special on-board Apogee.

How do you maintain excellent levels of service on a boat this size?

We have a big emphasis on service overall - the housekeeper has been with us for ten years. The owner and captain involvement has assured a high retention rate. The owner is involved, he’s interested in the experience of the charter guests, and therefore keeping crew is a significant interest to him personally. It’s great to work in an environment where everyone understands how the team stays together and performs.

MY Apogee 1200x800 Superyacht Stories 5

What’s the best thing about chartering Apogee?

The beauty of chartering a 62.5 metre yacht like Apogee is that we have the numbers to support a completely seamless superyacht operation. We manage the vessel day and night, including overnight passages which allows guests to travel by night and enjoy a new destination every day.

What destinations are your personal favourites?

The Caribbean and the Bahamas in the winter, and the whole of the Mediterranean throughout the summer. In the Caribbean, the crew’s favourite spot is Meads Bay, Anguilla. The beach is really spectacular. The Balearic Islands are also favourites - we’re all about the beach! We organise a lot of beach excursions for guests around the Amalfi coastline, Turkey and Greece. It’s all about getting out with all the comforts you need with no traffic and making your way as you please. Everything is delivered to you right from the yacht - you can’t beat it! It’s just magic.

How are the boat and the crew prepared to accommodate children and teenagers?

The variety of water recreation on board Apogee is superb, but that’s standard with most yachts of this size. Where we differ is that we have a lot of dedicated entertainment centres for the whole family. Back to having 17 crew, this is where we’re afforded a lot of people who will be instrumental in activities around the boat, from games and karaoke to helping out with the SeaBobs in the water. Elevators on all levels is also a considerable advantage for families, and possibly even a requirement for some of our clients. Our staff is such that we have a great deal of versatility between the steward and the professional bartenders; our lovely ladies are great at nurturing the children on board. It’s always great to see a mother content and relaxed with everybody happy, safe and having fun.

What is your advice to guests who are concerned about safety on board?

I think the antithesis here is personal attention. We’re quick to understand the needs of the clients, and as far as the benefits today of technology, yachting is much safer, pleasurable and comfortable than it ever has been. Small accidents happen, things like wave runners and falling down steps, but we emphasise protocol and experience. We have video productions and animations, and in our briefing at the beginning of each charter, the guests all gather in the bridge deck bar and we discuss matters of importance relevant to their safety and experience to ensure a safe and fantastic charter.

To the amazement of onlookers, former UFC owner Frank Fertitta III’s $250 million yacht, Viva, got stuck at a Fort Lauderdale bridge. The 308-foot yacht, boasting a gym, pool, cinema, helipad, and even a beauty salon, may have suffered damage in the accident.

who owns apogee yacht

The Viva yacht, known as an active Feadship luxury vessel delivered in 2021, experienced a bit of inactivity at Fort Lauderdale on September 10th. The vessel, with a top speed of 20.0 knots, was caught in a state of inertia due to the massive luxury yacht being lodged against the bridge. A video of the 308-foot pleasure craft, named Motoryacht of the Year in 2022, shows the pearly white hull practically stuck to the bridge with barely any space for air to pass through. It doesn’t take a genius to guess that this unwanted attachment likely caused some damage, though it is difficult to confirm from the video.

Alice Guo confirms leaving PH by boats, one of which was a yacht

Dismissed Bamban, Tarlac Mayor Alice Guo on Monday said that they left the Philippines via boats, one of which was a yacht.

"Umalis po kami, Madam Chair, by boat po," Guo told a Senate panel.

(We left, Mada'm Chair, by boat.)

"Meron po kaming sinakyang yate po," she added, confirming the information asked by Senator Risa Hontiveros who is the chairperson of the panel.

(There was a yacht we boarded.)

After being pressed by the senators to tell more details about their escape, Guo said they climbed aboard the yacht in a port in Metro Manila.

However, Guo refused to divulge to the public the name of the person who facilitated their yacht ride and the owner of the same.

What she only recalled was that the yacht has "wings" stickers and numbers on it.

The senators tried to get the names of the facilitator and the owner by asking Guo to write it on a piece of paper, but she requested them not to divulge it in public.

Guo wrote the name of the facilitator of the trip on a paper, but she noted that she is not sure if he is the owner of the yacht.

Guo has repeatedly told the senators that she is afraid for her safety due to threats which she refused to divulge to the Senate panel.

After riding the yacht for a "few hours", they transferred to a bigger boat. She said she doesn't know the exact location where they made the transfer.

"Madilim pa rin po...Basta dagat po," she said.

(It was still dark. It was in the sea.)

After transferring to a bigger boat, Guo said they stayed in one room for days. She added that she was not aware of the time because they were told not to use their cellphones.

"Siguro mga four or three or five [days]. Basta matagal po...Four days po siguro... Hindi po kami pinapalabas," she said.

(Maybe four or three or five [days]. It was long... Four days maybe... We were not allowed to go out.)

She admitted that she felt afraid in the middle of the second boat ride.

"Kung puwede lang umatras, aatras na po ako...Nakakatakot po talaga," she said.

(If it were just possible to back out, I would have backed out... It was really scary.)

"Gusto ko na po umuwi. Gusto ko na po bumalik," she added.

(I wanted to go home. I wanted to go back.)

Asked why she did not return, Guo said, "Nagkamali po talaga ako (I really made a mistake)."

After riding the second "big" boat, Guo said they transferred to another small boat then proceeded to Malaysia.

"Paglabas po namin, may sinakyan pa kami isang maliit na bangka... 'Yung bangka po bumiyahe pa po kami tapos Malaysia na po," she said.

(When we got out, we boarded a small boat... That boat traveled to Malaysia.)

Asked about the location where they arrived in Malaysia, Guo said she doesn't know because they were instructed not to look around the places they have been.

In a separate Senate investigation last August 27, Guo's supposed sister, Shiela Guo, told the senators that they left the Philippines by riding several boats .

According to Shiela, the three of them were fetched by a van from their farm in Tarlac and they traveled southbound from dinner time to midnight.

However, she said she does not know the location where they rode a small white boat. According to Shiela, the small boat can only cater to around 10 people.

They then transferred to a bigger boat which Shiela said can accommodate many people. The second ship appears to be a fishing ship because there were nets on it, according to Shiela.

After riding what seemed to be a fishing ship, Shiela said they transferred again to a smaller boat.

Asked if the last boat transferred them to Malaysia, Shiela answered in the affirmative.

It took a month before the Philippine government became aware that Guo and her siblings had left the country in July.

Alice Guo is the subject of multiple complaints, one of which was filed with a Tarlac court, which ordered her arrest for her alleged connections to the Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator (POGO) in Bamban that was raided for illegal activities.

Among the complaints she is facing are graft, money laundering, and human trafficking.
