Argo 90: On board the 28.5m Riva flybridge yacht

The Argo may be the smallest of Riva’s new-generation flybridge models, but it is perfectly formed. As sportsman David Beckham takes delivery of his Argo 90, Seven , we take a look around hull number one... 

To fully appreciate the new Riva 90' Argo, and really any Riva, you have to take a bird’s-eye view. That’s how its designer, Mauro Micheli, sees it, and the helicopter perspective is the first drawing he presented to the shipyard. If you were to look at the new Riva from that angle, one feature you’d notice is the asymmetric design of the large glass panel inserted into the hardtop. According to Stefano de Vivo, chief commercial officer of the Ferretti Group , this single piece is also “quite expensive”.

“It’s like an abstract design,” explains Sergio Beretta, co-founder with Micheli of Officina Italiana Design . “Our main passion is contemporary art, and so we wanted to give something special, something more contemporary for this boat, and we found this asymmetric cut [glass],” he says. It’s set inside the hardtop that shelters a good section of the 46-square-metre ybridge, one of the great assets of this elegant sub-30-metre yacht. This asymmetric top has already been seen on the Argo’s larger sistership, the 33.5-metre Riva Dolcevita .

The Argo – a name borrowed from the Greek legend of the Argonauts and the Golden Fleece – is the third and, at 28.5 metres, the smallest of Riva’s new-generation flybridge yachts, but as Micheli puts it, “it’s a strong design”.

“We think we found a very good balance for the spaces and for the style,” Beretta says. “The 90 came after the experience of the 100 [Corsaro] and 110 [Dolcevita]. It was a good thing on this project because all the positive feedback and features that we found for the two previous models we could express on this one. This experience was very helpful for us.” Many features are repeated successfully on a smaller scale – for instance, the saloon and its large windows. To create the effect the shipyard has nicknamed the “crystal palace”, which is to say a space surrounded by glass, proved an engineering challenge. The saloon’s aft section is almost all glass with no thick support or column to block the view. The idea is to provide an infinity view.

On the larger Dolcevita, the shipyard built a grid of steel to support the large amount of glass. On the Argo, the shipyard used a frame in carbon fibre instead, but the effect is the same, and quite impressive. It is, de Vivo says, “a spacious lounge covering almost 40 square metres open to the sea and reaches heights of over 2.1 metres”. It’s divided between a seating area and dining space finished with low-lying furniture. On one side is access to the galley and on the other is a corridor leading to the private owner’s suite, behind a solid door.

Riva introduced the first Argo, built at its La Spezia shipyard, as a world premiere in Florida, first in Miami and later in Palm Beach. It features a bar right outside the saloon doors on the main deck. “I think in this area of the world [North America], people like to entertain a lot more with bars outside,” de Vivo says. It comes complete with two sofas and a coffee table by Paola Lenti.

On the European version, however, Officina Italiana Design has kept all the deck furnishings very low. A pair of sofas flank a high/low table that can be slid apart in two pieces, so that the view from inside is uninterrupted. Owners can choose either configuration, according to their preference.

One of the design challenges of the Argo was to make a shorter yacht with a full body forward look as sleek as possible. During the day, as the sunshine bounces off the surface, bands of dark glass make the boat appear slimmer. At night, with the interior lights on, the effect is strikingly different, and it becomes clear just how much glass there is. If lined up side by side, the panes would cover more than 80 square metres. With the light pouring out of the windows, the same boat appears more voluminous, simply because the brain interprets the surfaces in a different way.

Micheli’s approach to design is emotional and instinctive and he thinks about each design as a whole, a bit like a sculpture, and there aren’t any bad angles. From the bow of the Argo looking aft, the fleeting lines merely hint at the flybridge and its hardtop, which is painted black. He says the exterior, and especially “the surface”, is inspired by automotive design. From that angle, the yacht, which is capable of reaching 30 knots with the larger engine option (MTU 16V 2000 M96), also has the stance of a sports car.

Officina Italiana Design has been part of the Riva story for more than 25 years. One of the first larger boats the firm designed for Riva was the 13-metre Rivarama 44, a rakish dayboat with one cabin. At the time, the builder’s technical department did not quite get it, as Beretta recalls. They thought it crazy to make a 13-metre yacht with just one cabin, he says, “And then they sold 130 in 10 years.”

That’s a pretty solid argument that has helped the design firm keep a large amount of creative freedom in its collaboration with Riva. “We have to thank the shipyard. They always try to produce what we design; we are very lucky with that. Some designers we know would like to be more creative, but they are constrained by what the yard is able and willing to produce,” Beretta says. Their design philosophy pervades the Riva DNA.

“Good design must be long-lasting, and it is a sign of respect for our work but also for the customers. They don’t deserve a boat that is out of fashion in two years. That’s why we are classical, though with a contemporary touch because you cannot live in the past.”

This philosophy carries into the interior. Officina Italiana Design works closely with the yard’s interior design department on everything from materials to colours and furniture, and they create interiors that transcend fashions.

Although they have not got around to designing furniture yet, they have a number of go-to favourites, all Italian brands. Minotti is one, but they like to mix it up. Another preferred furniture maker is a small company near their home in Bergamo called Acerbis.

“The basic materials we use for all Rivas – because we believe they are part of the history – are basically three: wood, leather and stainless steel,” Beretta says. Then new materials are thrown in because no one wants to be stuck in the past. On the Argo, stainless steel is used extensively in strategic ways that expand space visually and reflect the light. Dark lacquer is on the ceilings and English walnut on bulkheads.

“Because this boat is so light, we decided on a darker interior, which provides comfort,” Micheli says. White leather with stitched borders and Calacatta marble in the bathroom counterbalance the darker hues.

Considered a gateway to the superyacht-size yachts Riva now builds, the Argo has two crew cabins and a small mess that is connected to the galley on the main deck. Despite similarities, it would be a mistake to see the Argo as a shrunken version of the Dolcevita or Corsaro. The hull is a new design developed for this project and the Argo has been thought out through and through.

The shipyard decided on just three guest cabins. An especially large suite is amidships, which compares favourably with the 30-square-metre suite on the main deck. “Some owners prefer sleeping up top and some prefer being down below. So, we’re giving them the best of two worlds with what amounts to two master cabins, plus another two en-suite cabins,” de Vivo says.

The Argo also has a great flow. A very nice feature is how interconnected the spaces are. For instance, it is possible to walk directly from the flybridge to the bow area, which is simply organised with a C-shaped couch. “In [the US], people use this area a lot more,” de Vivo observes.

The flybridge is one of the yacht’s great assets. The bar top is automated and opens at a touch of a button to reveal an outdoor galley just across from the dining table. But the pièce de résistance may be the superb seats facing the console. Set atop a sculptural pedestal with a stainless-steel finish, they provide fantastic views over the bow and the sensation of flight at higher speed. So yes, there are compelling reasons to look at the Argo from the top or, really, any angle.

What Is The Best Flybridge Cruiser?

There's no question that the popularity of boating has grown substantially over the last 5 years and fueling that growth has been the luxury flybridge market. According to Grand View Research , the yacht market size will increase at an annual growth rate of 5.1% between now and 2030. When looking at boats over 40-feet, flybridge yachts are a popular segment of the powerboat market that has been a dominant factor in that growth in ownership.

Major shipyards like Azimut , Sanlorenzo , and Feadship have all reported strong orders and current build projects. In 2023, those shipyards were number one, two, and three respectively in total length of new build yachts.

"The majority of the buyers we work with that are in the market for a cruising yacht also want a flybridge," says Captain Jeff Palmer , President of United Yacht Sales. "Especially if you plan on cruising in South Florida or over to the Bahamas, having a flybridge offers some many advantages, including great views and visibility from the higher position."

Many buyers ask, what is the best flybridge cruiser? With so many manufacturers building models that include a flybridge, and with varying levels of price and quality for different buyer types in the market, it becomes very difficult to say one yacht is better than any other. 

The best flybridge cruiser, according to total number of sales in the last 12 months, is the Sea Ray 400 Sedan Bridge which ended production of the model in 2003. The entire 40-to-50 foot segment for Sea Ray, which includes a 450 Express Bridge and a 480 Sedan Bridge, leads the brokerage market entirely in terms of number of sales in the U.S. These particular Sea Rays tend to be more affordable than some of the other luxury flybridge models available today.

The changes in travelling patterns and holiday habits over the past few years have reinforced many people’s need for their own free zone, a sanctuary with all the comfort and safety needed to be able to spend the holiday in your own homeland or own continent.

Boats are like small worlds – society in miniature – with people and stories travelling from one harbour to the next. The sea is an element that both connects and separates people.  

The primary objective of the Nimbus 495 Concept has been to create an expedition vessel – a “voyager” if you like. For this reason, the tank capacity has been dimensioned in order to be able to cover great distances but also to be able to rest calmly in a natural harbour for a long time without worrying about the electricity supply, a source of fresh water or “black water capacity”.  

The Nimbus 495 Concept provides the potential to go anywhere and live on board comfortably for many weeks – whether you want to set off on a great adventure or holiday in your own cozy archipelago.

One of the key properties of the boat’s design is that it is just as easy and forgiving to handle for two people in a demanding Nordic archipelago as it is comfortable and safe for a couple or a family who want to head off on a long voyage of discovery in the Mediterranean or the east coast of the USA. That is why we have also referred to the boat as “an island of its own” in the development work.  

Since a boat like the 495 Concept caters for a certain customer group with much experience, clearly defined requirements, wishes, dreams and needs, we will be able to carry out extensive customizations in partnership with the customer and in line with the customer’s specifications, says Mats Jacobsson, Technical Director at Nimbus Group.

Maximizing Opportunities

With the 495 Concept, we want to grow the coupé concept, while at the same time build on the legacy of Nimbus’ previous and existing coupé models. The salon is the very epicenter of the boat, the heart of the model. That’s where we live on board. That’s where we have the helm, the dining area, the social lounge and the galley, says Joacim Gustavsson, Chief designer at Nimbus Group Sweden AB.

The goal of the Nimbus 495 Coupé is to create a floating home that is both comfortable and safe, allowing you to feel embraced and want to stay on board for an extended period of time. The boat’s design is focused on optimizing function, as evident in the large rear windows in the salon. These windows were added to enhance the experience in the galley, which is an open, seamless, and integrated part of the entire social area on the aft deck and in the salon. The integration of these windows helps to create an inviting and open atmosphere that makes it more pleasant to spend time in the galley and social areas.

“The basic concept of the Nimbus 495 Coupé has a heritage it needs to follow. We want to take certain form elements with us as recognition of this,” says Joacim Gustavsson.

The Dynamic Positioning System (DPS) is the ideal solution when the driver needs to maintain the boat’s heading and position temporarily, such as when preparing for docking, waiting to refuel, or for a bridge or lock to open. It allows the crew to ready fenders and lines without stress, and gives the driver ample time to plan the next maneuver safely, even in deep waters.

In DPS mode, repositioning the boat is effortless—just tap the joystick to adjust the boat’s position or rotation, which is especially useful when wind and currents complicate manual control. Boating the Scandinavian way

We feel that there are fewer and fewer boats with experience-based designs and solutions adapted to local conditions. Nimbus has a long tradition of building coupé boats. We wish to fully realize this potential with the 495 Concept.  

In the Nordic region, we have a tradition spanning several thousand years of building boats for archipelagos and local adaptations. It gives us a sense of perspective of the experience on which we are basing things here in Scandinavia knowing that the timber for the “Oseberg” ship was felled in 819. The more than 1100-year old boats from Denmark and Norway are regarded as “phylogenetically” fully developed. This means that design and the art of building had come so far that there was hardly any room for improvement. Later scientific tank-testing of models has shown that the hull lines in the Viking boats were almost optimal and this kind of knowledge was not achieved overnight.

The modern traditional clinker-built boat shares its DNA with the Viking ships. Through the slow evolution from a straight keel to boats with sterns that turn upwards and outwards, the traditional boat acquired what we now call its natural shape. And it turns out in practice that what appears natural, is very often the right things at sea. 

It is our experience that boats built for a coastal landscape, with archipelagos, islands, islets, fjords and wave patterns and current conditions that can vary greatly within just a few nautical miles, have qualities that work in all waters. By translating all this experience into practice in the 495 Concept, it is our ambition to create a boat based on the best solutions that have been developed through experience of using boats in the Nordic coastal landscape. And for the 495 Concept to be an ideal vessel for those who want to cover great distances and to be out at sea or in the archipelago for a long period of time.

With the 495, the Nordic coupé boat will become relevant in the international market, particularly in the Mediterranean, the USA and the Nordic region. And with this, Nimbus is also undertaking a journey into another segment of boating. We can do this because we feel certain that boats that work in the archipelago will work anywhere.

The Nimbus 495 Concept has the space, comfort and capacity to be a home on the sea for a long period of time. To be an island of its own.

8 Flybridge Yachts Under 60 Feet Always In Demand

Flybridge yachts under 60 feet have evolved over the years from the iconic double-deck Hatteras (Hargrave) designs of the 1970s and 1980s to today’s sleek Eurostyle yachts with their curvaceous lines and acres of window glass. European styling caught on in America in the late 1990s when builders like Sea Ray, Carver and Bayliner introduced a series of successful new models designed to appeal to the growing baby boomer market.

Today nearly all flybridge motoryachts are imported from Europe and the only U.S. builders remaining in this market segment are Marquis, Meridian and — to a lesser extent — Sea Ray. While flybridge yachts under 60 feet are nowhere near as popular as express yachts this size, their popularity has remained fairly consistent and new models continue to evolve. That said, profiled below are eight of the most popular flybridge models produced in recent years.

Sunseeker Manhattan 52 2008–11

At a Glance: A top-selling yacht (over 50 were built), it’s fair to say the Sunseeker Manhattan 52 set the standards during her production years for motoryacht styling, luxury and performance. Deigned to mirror many of the features of her larger siblings, the three stateroom, galley down interior includes a spacious salon with C-shaped leather settee, full entertainment center and high-gloss cherry cabinets. Perhaps the most impressive feature of the Manhattan 52 is her spacious and opulent owner’s suite.

A crew cabin with single berth and small head is aft. The outdoor space aboard the Manhattan is impressive. Aside from her large cockpit, there is a roomy flybridge whose deck forms a hardtop over most of the cockpit. MAN 800hp (or 715hp Cat) engines cruise the 52 Manhattan at 24–26 knots (30+ knots top).

Price Range: From the mid $600s.

Sunseeker Manhattan 52 2017–Current

At a Glance:   Spectacular styling, very spacious accommodations and strong performance rank the Manhattan 52 among the finest cruising yachts in this class. Said to be the fastest selling model in the Sunseeker fleet. The outside living areas are especially impressive, particularly the unique foredeck dining area and the expansive flybridge which extends well aft over the cockpit.

Entering the interior, the galley is aft where it’s easily accessed from the cockpit. With the galley window down the countertop forms a bar on the port side of the cockpit—very clever. The salon windows are hugel. Below, there are accommodations for six guests in three cabins. The hydraulic bathing platform features a pop-up shower, bench and optional grill. Offered with IPS drives of straight inboards, twin Volvo 725hp D11 inboard engines cruise at 25–26 knots (30+ knots top).

Price Range: From about $1.3 million.  

Marquis 500 Sport Bridge 2009–16

At a Glance: The bold lines, megayacht-style interior and triple-IPS power system of the Marquis 500 Sport Bridge offer something different from most motoryachts this size. Perhaps the most innovative feature of the 500 SB is what Marquis calls a “sliding transom” that glides aft with a push of a button to create additional cockpit space. The well-appointed interior features dark Zebrano wood, black granite counters, and cherry flooring throughout.

Below, the three-stateroom layout includes a forward master suite with ensuite head, VIP queen to port, and twin single berths in the second guest cabin. The galley, salon, cockpit, and swim platform are all on the same level. A optional hydraulic swim platform makes lowering the tender in and out of the water an easy task. Triple Volvo 435hp IPS pod drives cruise the at over 30 knots.

Price Range:  From about $1.3 million.

Princess 56 Flybridge 2014–Current

At a Glance:   The Princess 56 is a stylish flybridge yacht that shares many design features with larger Princess models. The interior is beautifully finished with high-gloss cabinetry, indirect lighting and quality furnishings throughout. Below, guests enjoy an ensuite VIP cabin in the bow and a twin cabin (with beds that convert electrically to a double) aft and to starboard.

The master suite is aft with queen berth, settee, and huge rectangular glass panes that set new standards for hull windows in a yacht this size. Crew quarters with a single bed and head are aft. The cockpit boasts a teak dining table and bench seating. Teak-laid steps on either side lead down to the bathing platform. The vast flybridge features a sun bed, twin helm seats, wet bar, barbecue and dining areas. MAN 800hp inboards cruise at 25–26 knots (low 30s top).

Price Range: Used prices begin at just under $1 million.

Prestige 550 Fly 2012–Current

At a Glance: Distinctive French motor yacht with the emphasis on affordability. The interior of the 550 Fly is arranged with a large and open galley aft in the salon. Lower helm visibility is exceptional on this vessel. Three staterooms and two heads (plus crew quarters aft) are on the lower level including an elegant full-beam master suite with private salon access, large hull side windows, and walk-in closet.

The VIP stateroom, forward, has an island double, while the third, twin-berth, stateroom comes with a filler. This model comes in two versions: The Prestige 550 Fly (flybridge), and the Prestige 550 S with an electrically operated sunroof. Built on a lightweight cored hull, the 550 Fly will cruise at 24–26 knots with 600hp Cummins diesels coupled to Zeus pod drives (30+ top). Note that the pods are located well aft and a jackshaft connects the engines to the pods.

Price Range: From the high $700s.

Azimut 50 Flybridge 2015–Current

At a Glance:   A striking yacht with unusually large salon windows, the Azimut 50 Flybridge is a three stateroom Italian yacht with Azimut’s signature vertical hull windows and a decidedly broad bow area. Below decks, a U-shaped settee sits to starboard with a wood table at its center. Another settee is to port in the salon, and the raised lower helm is forward to starboard. Contrary to current trends, the galley is down rather than aft in the salon.

Storage is scarce and countertop space is extremely limited. The owner’s cabin is amidships, and the VIP cabin is at the bow as is the second guest cabin with two Pullman berths. The cockpit is completely shaded by the flybridge overhang and a U-shaped lounge runs the length of the transom. A hydraulic swim platform is standard. Volvo 670hp inboards cruise at 26–27 knots.

Price Range:   From about $1.1 million.

Azimut 5 Evolution 2002–11

At a Glance:   The 55 Evolution (called the 55 Flybridge in 2001–04) displays a styling scheme very different from earlier Azimut motoryachts. Gone are the tiered cabin windows of previous years replaced by fin-shaped salon windows. Also new were vertical glass panels in the hullsides, a design innovation that has become common in newer Azimuts. The open-plan salon features a C-shaped leather sofa to port and entertainment center to starboard.

The galley and dining area are forward, two steps up from the salon. Below, there are three staterooms and two full heads including a full-beam amidships master, VIP queen forward, and guest cabin with side-by-side berths. Lacquered cherry wood cabinets and trim are used throughout the interior. Crew quarters with a single berth and toilet are aft. Cat 715hp C12 V-drive diesels cruise at 26 knots (30+ top).

Price Range:   From the mid to high $300s.

Carver 570 Voyager 2001–05

At a Glance:   A seriously popular boat, the 570 Voyager is a stretched version of the Carver 530 Voyager (1998–2005) with the extra length used to enlarge the salon and galley. The three stateroom cherry interior is arranged with the galley forward in the very spacious salon with its long L-shaped sofa to starboard and club chairs opposite. A breakfast bar is built into the galley counter, and large windows together with nearly seven feet of headroom combine to create an unusually open and airy salon.

Below, the amidships master stateroom features a walkaround queen berth and ensuite head with tub/shower. The VIP stateroom forward includes a queen berth, and the second guest stateroom offers over/under bunks. A big attraction of the 570 is the roomy pilothouse with L-shaped leather sofa and wraparound helm console. Volvo 675hp diesels cruise at 22–24 knots.
