Yacht Rock Schooner band with a chorus behind them on stage.

Yacht Rock Schooner

Yacht Rock Schooner, a 1970's-1980's tribute band, that entices audiences onto the dance floor.

"All Night Long," by Lionel Richie and performed by Yacht Rock Schooner.

An 8-musician band, Yacht Rock Schooner, brings the 1970's and 80's back to life in full force. With an impeccable resemblance, instrumentally, to every 80's tune, band members trade off turns in the vocal department, flawlessly reaching all highs and lows of a pitch as their talent shines.

Luring 70's and 80's enthusiasts onto the dance floor with the likes of Lionel Richie, Stealers Wheel, Toto, Bee Gees, Kenny Loggins, and many more greatest hits, Yacht Rock Schooner takes it back to the old-school days of music. The band found a way to use songs as a time-travel-portal assisted by their strong vocals, sax, drums, guitar, and a sense of camaraderie that audiences can feel from beyond the stage.

If you love ’70s and early ’80s tunes from artists like Toto, Christopher Cross, America, Ambrosia and Bread, you’ll want to buy a ticket to the Portland Yacht Rock Festival.

The show is on Friday at Aura.

Yacht Rock is the tongue-in-cheek name given to soft-rock music that is loosely associated with southern California and boating. Mostly, it’s comprised of hit songs that you won’t bang your head to but will certainly sing along with. Best of luck with the those high notes in the refrain of Toto’s “Africa.”

Aura general manager Mark Curdo is a gigantic Yacht Rock fan, and the first planning meeting about the show took place at Three Dollar Dewey’s in January.

Curdo, with the help of guitarist Max Cantlin (Gina and the Red Eye Flight Crew, Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds, Micromasse), assembled an all-star cast of 14 local musicians to perform a slew of classic Yacht Rock songs on Friday night. Advertisement

“I’ve been a fan of light and easy listening rock my whole life,” Curdo said. “Whether people think Yacht Rock is cheesy or not, at the end of the day, this stuff is well done and the musicianship is ridiculous.”

Singer Gina Alibrio. Design by Kate Beever

The idea for the Yacht Rock show has been mapped out in Curdo’s head for a few years. “I wanted to have a few lead singers, I knew certain ones could hit certain notes, and I actually had the whole set list.”

It includes hits like “Reminiscing” by Little River Band, “Ventura Highway” by America, “Midnight at the Oasis” by Maria Muldaur, “Eye In The Sky” by The Alan Parsons Project and “On and On” by Stephen Bishop.

Lead vocal duties will be shared among Don Campbell, Gina Alibrio, Owen Conforte and Kris Rodgers. There will also be a couple of guest vocalists taking the stage.

The band is led by Cantlin and includes Tyler Quist on bass, Chris Sweet on drums, Emma Stanley on trumpet and flugelhorn and Kate Beever on percussion, among several others.

Musician Bitch. Photo by Dana Lynn Pleasant

Boston-based singer-songwriter Bitch (Karen Mould) is performing a Saturday night show on Great Diamond Island, the home of their longtime friend Dini Lamot.

“I’m gonna bring my bass and my violin, sing songs and tell some stories, and it should be really intimate and sweet,” said Bitch (known as Karen only to their mother, according to  a 2022 interview.)

Face the Music: Tough subjects get upbeat treatment on ‘Bitchcraft’

The show will feature a number of songs from the 2022 album “Bitchcraft,” including “Easy Target,” which they wrote in the aftermath of the Brett Kavanaugh confirmation hearings, and the synth- and percussion-heavy breakup tune “Pages.”

The album was well-received, and Bitch enjoyed the boost after a several year hiatus from putting out music. “It gave me wind under my broomstick again. It has been a beautiful homecoming into being an artist again.”

They said they’ve also been writing new material. “I actually started laying a couple of songs down in the studio last month. There’s a new project on the horizon.”

Bitch has been performing a one-woman show since the release of “Bitchcraft” and was excited to share that it will have an off-Broadway run in New York City starting this winter.

To get to the show on Saturday, take the Casco Bay Lines Great Diamond Island ferry at 6 p.m. Return trips depart at 10:35 p.m. Tickets are $14 and be purchased at the terminal. Visit cascobaylines.com for details.

DDD BRILLIANT CLASSICS 94712 [3 CDs: 71:53 + 75:30 + 67:01] The chamber music was not the strongest suit amongst nineteenth century Russian composers. In general they preferred to express themselves in symphonic and vocal music. This could be due to their aim to make their music more nationalistic. After all, chamber music tends to be more abstract in nature. Still they tried, and often the results were good. Tchaikovsky’s Piano Trio , one of the greatest in the genre, is a monumental masterpiece. It is dedicated to the memory of the composer’s friend, Nikolai Rubinstein, who had died in 1881. The work is very emotional and has a generally mournful mood. The performance by the Moscow Trio is expressive in the best Russian tradition, with singing strings and a playful piano. Typically “Russian” breadth and expansiveness is there but not at the expense of good drive. This is not a work where passions should be restrained, yet the Moscow musicians never push too hard, so the feeling remains sincere and not overblown. The complex, non-standard structure of the Trio holds together well and does not fall apart into separate 'pictures'. The Variations are played with unhurried elegance in a reading that is touching and sincere. The grand final variation is bright and heroic, and the tragic Coda seems to cut it short in its joyous ascent until we reach that desolate ending. The acoustics of the recording are “closed” and a little dull with the cello seeming to be placed rather far back. Glinka’s Trio pathétique is probably the oldest of the eminent Russian chamber works. Originally written for piano, clarinet and bassoon, it may have more appeal when performed in its original form: that combination is more rare and also sounds more operatic, which is appropriate, considering Glinka’s bel canto roots. This Trio was written before the composer firmly turned to establish the foundations of Russian national music. The music shows an unmistakable influence of Schubert, and the Forellenquintett is never too far away. There are expressive and memorable melodies aplenty and they are inventively developed. In this case the music receives a full-blooded enthusiastic performance, tempestuous and extravert. It serves well dramatically but this is a piece that would have benefited from a more relaxed stance. This interpretation pushes things a little too hard and makes the music seem unrefined. The Scherzo is quicksilver and its Trio eloquently operatic, however in the subsequent Largo the piano sound is not the most beautiful and sometimes becomes quite “wooden”. This tends to strip the slow movement of its nobility. The short and effective finale reminds us of the Pathétique title. Arensky’s First Trio is his masterpiece and one of the gems of the piano trio literature (see Piano Trio Survey ). Young composers often seem to pack as much good stuff as possible into their works: finally they can do it and so they try to squeeze everything in. This is one such work. The first movement is a good match for the highly Romantic allegros of Brahms and Fauré. It is turbulent, intensely emotional and full of memorable melodies. The performers do not overdo the drama. They are enthusiastic and provide good weight and drive, letting the music breathe and evolve naturally. The quicksilver Scherzo could have been written by Fauré or Saint-Saëns. The musicians express well the playful swing of the outer parts, as well as the leisure-walking stride of the Trio section. The Élégie is a beautiful sad song with mournful outer parts and a nostalgically sweet middle episode. The Moscovites play with expression and care. Naturally there's a most Brahmsian finale, tempestuously heroic — Romanticism at its steamiest. The performance is solid and very persuasive. Regrettably, the acoustics are not ideal, with the piano often sounding as if it is underwater. On the heels of the emotional Arensky, the Trio by his contemporary Sergey Taneyev may come as dry and cerebral. The first movement seems constantly to inhibit its own development. This music is closer to the ever-shifting thought-flow of Richard Strauss than to the melodic development of Tchaikovsky. The performers create the richly woven sound-fabric with light fingers. The music has grace and momentum but its flames do not burn high. The Scherzo has the dark demonic quirkiness of Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances and the eerie pace of some of Bruckner’s scherzos. The music is balletic, and actually is quite modern for its time, some moments sounding like precursors of Prokofiev. The performers do not release the listener’s attention for a second. This is a taut and involved reading that energizes and enthralls. The elegiac slow movement is meditative and melancholic. The Moscow musicians express its autumnal beauty with calmness and dignity. This “objective” presentation of human emotions paints a more realistic picture of what we actually feel, as opposed to the artful over-dramatization of the high Romantics like Tchaikovsky or Arensky. On the other hand, has our perception changed over centuries and is Taneyev just more attuned to our times? That may be the case, but in the same way that prose is more truthful than poetry, it is also less interesting. The energetic and affirmative finale is Beethovenian in spirit. Taneyev seems to be always one or two steps away from that “yes!” moment, yet never reaches it, as if on purpose. Maybe a clearer recording would produce a stronger effect. The music gives a lot to an attentive listener: every minute brings in many interesting events, colours, textures, but it all seems very buttoned-up even though the ending is very positive. Overall, this is a trio that should be better known, although the analytical first movement may not appeal to everyone. Rimsky-Korsakov and Borodin were recorded two years later in the same venue. The acoustics are better with sound that is clear and present. When Rimsky-Korsakov wrote his Trio, he was already an established master of orchestration, and one can sense this. All textures are crafted with skill, although the solutions are often quite standard. You would never guess the composer in a blind test. The first movement is reminiscent of the piano trios by Mendelssohn, with boiling spirits, dramatic turbulence and bittersweet schmerz . At 15:25 it sounds too long for its contents. This is followed by a fussy Scherzo, crisp and repetitive. The slow movement is an operatic duet, a sweet and mellow dialogue of two lovers, full of tenderness and warmth. It calls to mind places in Rimsky’s operas, and also the slow romances in the chamber works of Mendelssohn and Schumann. The energetic and theatrical finale displays skilful treatment of motifs in a sequence of characteristic scenes – agitated, lyrical, capricious, dramatic and jubilant in turn. The performance is fresh and to the point, with both energy and attention to detail. This is an interesting side of Rimsky-Korsakov, one that is scarcely known. The music is well crafted but very safe , nothing stands out of the line and as a result nothing is really memorable. The unfinished Trio by young Borodin is in contrast to that by Rimsky-Korsakov, less skilled and polished but more audacious. Borodin was always an experimenter. The opening movement is full of youthful energy; the performance has drive and buoyancy, and does not relax its grip for a moment. The slow movement is a subtle song without words. The Intermezzo is an energetic Mazurka, with much juicy bravura — and maybe with just too much stomp and bang. This movement does not really work as an ending; I feel a want of something fast and light to come after it. This is surely the lamentable reality of a work that is unfinished and not the performers’ fault: they are attentive and enthusiastic throughout. Overall, this box set seems to start with the best and then gradually decreases in interest and value of the works. Tchaikovsky’s Trio is certainly the most commonly encountered but everyone should hear the wonderful Arensky; Taneyev can surprise you by being so advanced; and it is interesting to make the acquaintance of chamber works by Rimsky-Korsakov and Borodin. One can afford all of this at Brilliant Classics’ low prices. There is much beauty here although the acoustics on the first two discs are not ideal. That said, the quality of the performances is more than adequate. The recordings are from the early nineties. The booklet provides an excellent musical analysis of the works. Oleg Ledeniov

  • Love Boat  stars Fred Grandy, Bernie Kopell, Ted Lange and Jill Whelan set sail on Princess Cruises'  Love Boat  Celebration at Sea that left out of Brooklyn, N.Y., on Aug. 31 and traveled through New England and Canada
  • Kopell remembered Debbie Reynolds' guest appearance during a cast Q&A on board the Enchanted Princess
  • The 91-year-old actor said his scene with the late actress received "tremendous applause"

More than 2,000 guest stars appeared on The Love Boat during its 10-season run, and according to Bernie Kopell , one of them tried to steal the spotlight.

“ Debbie Reynolds always had to be the center of attention,” Kopell, who played Dr. Adam Bricker, said at The Love Boat : Behind the Scenes Stories panel on the Enchanted Princess on Friday, Sept. 6.

The 91-year-old actor said “no magician was ever safe” around Reynolds, who died in 2016 at age 84 and appeared in multiple season 4 episodes of The Love Boat before popping up again in season 6.

“She didn't care for some magicians,” Kopell continued. “And so, she went over to the band leader and she whispered something in his ear. I don't know what it was. And then she came to me and she said, ‘Bernie, you don't do anything. I'll just do everything. You just stand there.’"

Kopell later learned that “what she whispered to him was, ‘Play a Fandango. I will do everything,’” he said. “They played the Fandango, and she whirled around by herself, and whirled nearer to me, then came away from me. And our scene ended with her jumping up onto my right shoulder to tremendous applause. Debbie Reynolds and the Disappearing Magician.”

When speaking to PEOPLE during Princess Cruises ’ The Love Boat Celebration at Sea, Kopell said he enjoyed “talking about the various stars we had on the show” with fans who attended the cast Q&As on board with his costars Fred Grandy , Ted Lange and Jill Whelan .

“I just loved the people who came aboard,” he gushed. “We’ve had some amazing, amazing people: Eva Marie Saint , Shirley Jones , Debbie Reynolds. I had fun with them, appreciated their talents.”

Kopell also considered Jeraldine Saunders, whose 1974 book The Love Boats inspired The Love Boat series, a good friend. “She was just a beautiful woman. What a light,” he said. “We were really close. She chose to become a cruise director, and she never thought of herself as a writer, but she just jotted down some notes about the captain, the doctor, the purser and some guests, and here we are.”

Saunders died in February 2019 at age 95, and Kopell spoke at her memorial. Saunders’ legacy lives on through The Love Boat’ s continued popularity, which has already inspired another Love Boat Celebration at Sea that will set sail on the Regal Princess from Nov. 16-23, 2025, and make stops throughout Mexico in Cozumel, Costa Maya and Roatan.

Kopell considers his own legacy to be his two sons, the youngest of whom, Josh, wants to follow in his dad’s footsteps as an actor. “He wakes up singing and doing funny things and is a good, good boy,” Kopell said of his 22-year-old son.

As for the advice Kopell would give Josh, he said bluntly, “Don't mess up!”

The Love Boat  Celebration sailing began its seven-night sailing in Brooklyn, N.Y. on Aug. 31 and made stops in Boston and Eastport, Maine, as well as Saint John and Halifax in Canada. Throughout the trip, guests could participate in  Love Boat  trivia, sip on specialty  Love Boat  cocktails, rewatch episode of the series by the pool, snap photos with the cast and attend one of two Air Supply concerts. The  Love Boat  stars officiated a vow renewal on board, the show’s bartender, Lange, 76, hosted cocktail demonstrations and Whelan, 57, performed in the farewell show on Friday, Sept. 6, ahead of the ship’s return to New York City.

Passengers on board the Enchanted Princess from Aug. 31-Sept. 7 also enjoyed access to specialty dining available at seafood spot  The Catch by Rudi , steak destination  Crown Grill  and immersive dining experience  360 , where  Brooke Shields takes guests through Europe for a seven-course meal that engages all five senses. Additional entertainment on board the Love Boat Celebration at Sea sailing included magic and comedy from Quinn "The Mighty Quinn" Beasley and Eric Buss, DJ sets by DJ Robert Micheal and a staging of the musical Rock Opera .

Thomas Marocke said: Hi Sasha! The "Albatros" turned out very nice. It was once a kit like the one that has been offered cheaply for many years with so many other models for beginner. In recent years, the quality of wood has improved significantly with some manufacturers, laser cutting or milling was added. Also the quality of the parts for example by finished brass etched parts has become better. Anyone who is intensively engaged in ship modelling will not get around the purchase of expensive books and machines at some point. The supply of excellent parts has increased by leaps and bounds, and with your own skills, expertise and precise machines you can build excellent models today. You still have to build the shipyourself, the result can vary greatly even with good materials. Your "Albatros" is an example of the best use of beautiful wood, metals, blocks and ropes to make a super model! Best regards Thomas Click to expand...

Hi Sasha! Anyone familiar with the European "Old School" construction kits can vividly imagine the contents of the "Albatros" construction kit. Be substituting many building materials with the right talent, your high-quality "Albatros" was created. Best regards Thomas

Alexander74 said: At the moment, the project for the construction of the schooner "Albatross" has been completed. It took me 5 months to complete this construction. I tried to make this model a little better than it is presented in the set. Although the customer and I agreed on the assembly out of the box, but I could not resist reworking. And so I changed: I completely altered the keel frame and frames, the stem, keel, sternpost and rudder blade were replaced with a pear. The rig in the box was all crooked, so I replaced it too. Geeks and gaffs made of black hornbeam. Made some design improvements. Changed the machine tools (slightly modified them). Completely replaced the rigging and blocks out of the box (they went out of the box to the bin). I completely changed the wiring diagram of the rigging. The set contains a very simplified diagram. And what is left of the kit here? Hmm ... need to think. How well I was able to judge your colleagues in ship modeling. I can say one thing: I am happy with the result. And as the customer is SATISFIED, words are not conveyed. View attachment 247473 View attachment 247474 View attachment 247475 Click to expand...
