Rolex Yachtmaster 116655 Full Review

Behold the  new rose gold Rolex Yachtmaster with the Rolex Oysterflex Bracelet: Rolex's 1st Rubber Strap

With the new rose gold Rolex Yachtmaster, Rolex watchmakers held no punches and put in nearly every great idea they ever had into one amazing watch. The Rolex Yachtmaster has been around since the early '90s and came in an assortment of materials from gold and steel all the way up to platinum. They are known for being shiny and luxurious from one end to the next. So it comes as no surprise that the world was taken by a storm when they decided to use rubber to introduce the new Rolex Yachtmaster watch reference #116655 . Was it a step up or a step down for the series? PrestigeTime.com bloggers believe that pictures speak much louder than words.

The new men's Yachtmaster from Rolex is a 40mm 18k rose gold case watch with a black dial and accented in Rolex's very own Everose gold. Just like their proprietary 18kt rose gold alloy, Rolex will always prefer to create the status quo and not have to rise to meet it because of anyone else.

In the new rose gold Rolex Yachtmaster, they held no punches and put in nearly every great idea they ever had into one amazing watch.

At the core lies their in-house Rolex movement, the automatic caliber 3135 which resonates at 28,800 vph containing 31 jewels and has a whopping 50-hour power reserve. Of course, it would not be complete without their "Cyclops" magnifier. The new rose gold Rolex Yachtmaster is also known as the m116655-0001.

Rolex is also no stranger to trending luxury watches. They tend to be the first in doing and introducing many things. While rubber has been around for a long time and has been used on many watches over the years, both high-end luxury watches and everything else. Rubber had no place on a Rolex watch until now. Rolex waited this long to introduce this material into their products not because they were hesitant to be part of the trend, on the contrary,

they wanted to revolutionize the rubber watch band before using it on their first-ever rubber strapped watch. Creating the best rubber bracelet was something Rolex obsessed about until its perfection. Enter the new Rolex  Oysterflex bracelet which we hope to see on more of their men's watches. A rubber-coated two-piece titanium bracelet with a patented cushioning system. The black elastomer coating is a similar substance to what you see on the Apple Watch. The bracelet has an Oysterlock clasp in solid 18k Everose gold which seals the deal. Rolex held nothing back in reinventing and over-engineering the perfect rubber bracelet that has the same elasticity as a metal bracelet without the initial cold feeling of a metal bracelet when first placed on a wrist. Now it's just a matter of time before a platinum Rolex comes with a rubber Oysterflex bracelet.

In 2015 Rolex introduces the Rolex Yachtmaster watch model #116655, the first Rolex watch with the all-new rubber Oysterflex band with an 18k rose gold clasp. After its creation, they saw all that they have made …and it was good.

Most recently this watch has been upgraded with a new movement and new reference number that we sell new, in its original box, with a warranty, and with free shipping to the United States. The new Rolex 126655 Yachtmaster 40mm is essentially the same watch with a few improvements. Specifically, the caliber inside has been replaced with the Rolex in-house caliber 3235, a Superlative Chronometer with exceptional precision, 31 watch jewels, Paraflex shock absorbers, and a substantially longer power reserve duration of approximately 70 hours.

The Watch Of The Open Seas: History Of The Rolex Yacht-Master

Rolex Yacht-Master 42 White Gold 226629

Instagram: @rolex

In the year 1992, Swiss watchmaker Rolex would debut a new model line at the Baselworld show that was strikingly similar to the already-popular Submariner. It featured the same 40mm Oyster case with a rotating bezel, the same chronometer-certified caliber, and the same Oyster bracelet.

Seemingly the only difference between the two was the white dial of that first Yacht-Master, a style which has never been an option on a Sub, and the inferior depth rating of 100m when compared to the Sub’s 300m.

Yet, the Yacht-Master was well-received upon launch, and with the passing of time, the yachting-inspired model has evolved and pioneered its own path within Rolex’s catalog.

Read on with us as we go back to the beginning and track the catalysts that paved the way for the most recent Yacht-Master release, the Yacht-Master 42 (226659), to become one of the hottest sports timepieces of the year.

The Release Of The Yacht-Master

The first Yacht-Master watch was launched in 1992 under reference number 16628. It featured a yellow gold case, a bidirectional graduated bezel, and a matching full-gold Oyster bracelet. Its dial was white with black hour indices, while at center were gold Mercedes hands, and beating inside was the 3135 movement.

Previous to the Yacht-Master’s introduction, Rolex had not released a new model line in a quarter century. So, why did they go with the Yacht-Master, a design that risked being a detractor from their existing Submariner? Let’s take a look at the inspiration.

The sport of yachting is one which demands precise timing and extreme coordination of the entire crew for optimal performance, particularly in offshore competitions.

Vintage Rolex Daytona Yacht-Master Prototype

Rolex believed their waterproof and chronometer-grade timepieces to be more than qualified to handle the knocks of a regatta and keep ticking accurately. The brand is also notorious for their marketing prowess, which led them to act quickly in establishing an association with the sport.

Beginning in 1958 with their first sponsorship of a race, the relationship has endured until today, when the brand sponsors over a dozen international yachting events.

Nevertheless, it’s hard to deny that there exists a large gap between first contact in 1958 and the release of the yacht-inspired timepiece in the early ’90s. Why wasn’t the Yacht-Master released earlier on?

Well, Rolex played around with the idea of yachting chronograph early on, though it never materialized. All that’s left of these trials are an extremely limited number of Daytona ref. 6239 chronograph prototypes with a 39mm case (vs standard 36mm) and modified regatta dials.

Unfortunately, the Yacht-Master concept was scrapped and would not reappear until decades later.

Rolex Submariner With Date Window

When it did return, none of the previous Yacht-Master’s DNA was there. Furthermore, the 1992 Yacht-Master was bizarrely similar to the 16610 Sub of the time.

Interestingly enough, Rolex folklore tells of a time in the ’80s when the brand sought to update their Submariner . What resulted was less of an update and more of an overhaul, manifested as what we know now as the first Yacht-Master.

Apprehensive of the repercussions that making such aggressive design changes to their staple offering could bring, the brand chose instead to release the watch intended to be a new Submariner as the reborn Yacht-Master instead.

The move worked, and the new Yacht-Masters started flying off the shelves. The Yacht-Master was perceived as a more luxurious Sub, though its bidirectional bezel proved useful for on-the-fly countdowns which are critical in sailing competitions. The waterproof nature of the Oyster case further cemented the Yacht-Master as the ideal first mate.

Mid-Size & Ladies’ Yacht-Master

In 1994, just two years after the debut of the 16628, Rolex would introduce the same design but in smaller case sizes. These were:

  • Ref. 68628: Yacht-Master “Mid-Size” in 35mm
  • Ref. 69628: Yacht-Master Ladies’ in 29mm

This marked the first time that Rolex ever offered one of their sports models in a smaller case size; all previous instances of case size changes were increases as opposed to reductions. It has been speculated that the smaller cases were intended for the Asian market.

Rolex Yacht-Master Yellow Gold 16628

In the same year, Rolex also offered the same 16628 but this time with a deep blue dial. Blue dials tend to make for broadly-liked watches, and coupled with the gold case and bracelet, the new version was once again a hit.

The Platinum (Rolesium) Yacht-Master

The next update to the model line would come in 1999 with yet another home-run: the Rolesium Yacht-Master. The new watch featured a stainless steel case and bracelet with a platinum dial and platinum-insert bezel. Rolesium, a term registered by Rolex back in the ’30s for a combination of steel and platinum in a watch, was finally put to use.

The new platinum Yacht-Master ref. 16622 was not only more accessible than the previous all-gold varieties, it was also more versatile. This would lead the 16622 variety to become the face of the Yacht-Master line.

In fact, many online resources erroneously label it the first Yacht-Master ever; this should offer an idea of how emblematic it is in the watch industry.

The 16622 also presented a new dial and hand style that would mark Rolex as a whole through to the modern day. The new Yacht-Master boasted what is now recognized as the “maxi dial”.

Yellow Gold Rolex Yacht-Master Blue Dial 16628

Rolex Yacht-Master 16628 w/ maxi dial. Instagram: @kellokonttori

The maxi dial is characterized by oversized hour indices as well as larger hands at center. To the untrained eye, the difference may be difficult to spot, though experienced collectors will note the change instantly.

The maxi dial became the style of choice for all modern Rolex sports watches, though it got its start in the 1999 platinum Yacht-Master. A Submariner would first feature a maxi dial in 2003, with the release of the 50th anniversary Rolex Submariner “Kermit” (16610LV).

All versions of the Yacht-Master produced after the introduction of the maxi dial would also feature the new dial design. This included the blue, gold, and white dial versions from years past.

The Two-Tone (Rolesor) Yacht-Master

Six years after the Rolesium Yacht-Master came to be, Rolex would once more put on display their mixed-metal Rolesor style in the two-tone Yacht-Master 16623.

Two-Tone Rolex Yacht-Master Blue Dial 16823

Yacht-Master ref. 16623. Instagram: @v.davidofftimepieces

The 2005 debuts possessed a 40mm steel case, a yellow gold bidirectional bezel, and a two-tone Oyster bracelet. As far as dials, many of the previous styles were also available like the black-on-white, though mother of pearl version were also introduced.

It was during Baselworld 2007 when Rolex would introduce the Yacht-Master’s younger and much larger sibling, the Yacht-Master II. Whereas the original Yacht-Master was very close functionally to the Sub, the Yacht-Master II was completely the opposite.

It can be said that the only overlap between the YM and the YMII is be the name, as the second iteration looks like a whole new watch. This time, though, it’s clear that the watch has been designed with the needs of yachting professionals in mind.

Rolex Yacht-Master II In Yellow Gold

The first Yacht-Master II were marked by a 44mm Oyster case, an Oyster bracelet, a white dial,  and a blue Cerachrom (ceramic) Ring Command bezel. The first two references, 116688 and 116689, were made of yellow gold and white gold, respectively.

Powering the YMII was another innovation – Rolex’s in-house calibre 4161. It features the COSC-chronometer certification and 72-hour power reserve that are today’s standard, though they were industry-leading at the time. Most notable, though, was the 4161 movement’s functions.

The new caliber boasted a “ programmable countdown with mechanical memory and on-the-fly synchronization. ” Naturally, the programming of the movement required the use of the Ring Command bezel, a feature which had also never been encountered on a Rolex watch before.

In later years, Rolex would go on to release Rolesor and full-steel versions of the Yacht-Master II, both of which have been relatively successful. The Yacht-Master II has certainly earned a spot in the brand’s catalog, and is sure to stick around for next couple of decades.

The Six-Digit Yacht-Master

Rolex Yacht-Master 116622 Cobalt Blue Dial j

Yacht-Master 116622

Twenty years after it debuted as the 16628, the Yacht-Master would see in 2012 the modernization that had been sweeping Rolex’s other model families.

Aside from receiving a new six-digit reference number (116622), subtle aesthetic changes were also present, as was an outstanding new dial option – the Cobalt Blue dial.

The case was now a “super case”, which retained the 40mm diameter but was styled differently. The bezel was now completely platinum, where previous versions were made of steel with a platinum insert. The Oyster bracelet had likewise been upgraded.

A platinum bezel / platinum dial option was still part of the collection and therefore received the same upgrades. Unfortunately, this iconic “albino” look would be completely discontinued in 2017.

The subsequent and most recent significant change to the Yacht-Master family took place in 2015, when Rolex first introduced the Everose Yacht-Master 40 ref. 116655.

Rolex Everose Yacht-Master On Oysterflex Bracelet

Rolex Everose Yacht-Master on Oysterflex bracelet

The newest iteration of the YM possessed some new features. The case was made of Everose, and the bezel now boasted a black Cerachrom insert. Securing the watch to the wrist was another Rolex first – the Oysterflex rubber ‘bracelet’.

Before the 116655, no Rolex watch had ever sported a rubber band. The brand still refers to it as a bracelet given the metal elements within the band, but these are not obvious even with the watch in the hand.

This same style of Yacht-Master would receive the next update in 2019, when Rolex introduced the Yacht-Master 42 in white gold.

What’s Next?

With the recent changes that the Yacht-Master line has had, it is clear that Rolex intends to keep this model family alive and well for years to come. Consumers are likewise responding to each new release, offering plenty of feedback with their pocketbooks.

Introducing The Rolex Yacht-Master 42 In White Gold (Live Pics & Pricing)

Matte black bezel. need i say more.

yachtmaster rolex band

From a distance, you'd be forgiven for not even realizing that this watch is a new introduction to Rolex's collection. I mean, it looks so much like something that could have been in the catalog for decades, but it's actually as fresh as it gets. This is the first 42mm time-and-date Yacht-Master, offering a larger option for those who still find 40mm too conservative, and it comes with a sleek combination of a black dial and an unbelievable bezel made of white gold with a matte black Cerachrom insert. The markings on that insert are raised and polished and the result is totally stunning. Inside is the caliber 3235, which is Rolex's most state-of-the-art, time-and-date movement. It uses the Chronergy high-efficiency escapement and is regulated to a crazy +2/-2 seconds per day. If you liked the Everose gold Yacht-Master introduced back in 2015 but wanted something bigger and sleeker (and somehow even more reliable), your prayers have been answered.

yachtmaster rolex band

The Yacht-Master line can be a bit confusing, even for people who know their Rolex references backwards and forwards. First off, like with the Explorer, there's a standard Yacht-Master (which is what you're looking at here) and a Yacht-Master II (which is 44mm and has a regatta timer complication). As far as the simpler time-and-date models go, there are now three sizes: 37mm, 40mm, and 42mm. There are a mix of metal configurations, including steel and platinum, steel and Everose gold, all Everose gold, and now all white gold. And don't even get me started on the various incarnations of the Oyster bracelet and Oysterflex bracelet that you can choose from.

yachtmaster rolex band

For me, the new Yacht-Master 42, despite adding a bunch of new options to the mix, is the purest expression of the model yet. The white gold case is luxe and hefty while still giving off the appearance of being a hearty tool watch, the matte black bezel is straight-up mean looking, and the Oysterflex bracelet is practical and casual. This is a watch for someone who wants to look low-key but likes things just so. And I can squarely get behind that.

This model is available in a variety of materials, including stainless steel, yellow gold, white gold, and Everose gold, allowing you to choose the perfect combination to suit your style. Popular Rolex Yacht-Master Comparisons

When considering a Rolex Yacht-Master, it's natural to compare it with other popular Rolex models and even watches from other luxury brands. Comparing the Rolex serial numbers can also be a helpful way to understand the differences between various models. Let's look at some common comparisons:

Rolex Yacht-Master vs. Submariner

When comparing the Rolex Yacht-Master vs Submariner , both are nautical-inspired watches, but the Submariner is designed primarily for diving, while the Yacht-Master is tailored to the needs of sailors and yachting enthusiasts. Both the Yacht-Master and Submariner exemplify Rolex's commitment to excellence in both form and function, offering impeccable performance and timeless style.

Rolex Yacht-Master vs. Yacht-Master II

In the comparison of the Rolex Yacht-Master vs Yacht-Master II , the Yacht-Master II is a more complex timepiece, featuring a programmable countdown with a mechanical memory and on-the-fly synchronization. The Yacht-Master, on the other hand, is a more straightforward and versatile watch, suitable for both on and off the water.

Rolex Yacht-Master vs. Sea-Dweller

When looking at the Rolex Yacht-Master vs Sea-Dweller, the Sea-Dweller is a professional diving watch with a water resistance of up to 4,000 feet (1,220 meters), while the Yacht-Master is designed for sailing and water activities with a water resistance of up to 330 feet (100 meters).

Rolex Yacht-Master vs. Omega Seamaster

When comparing luxury watch brands, the Omega vs. Rolex debate often arises. While both brands offer exceptional timepieces, the Rolex Yacht-Master and the Omega Seamaster cater to different preferences and styles. Ultimately, the choice between the Yacht-Master and Seamaster comes down to personal preference, with Rolex appealing to those who value tradition and prestige, while Omega appeals to enthusiasts seeking innovation and versatility.

Testimonials

Nathaniel g..

"I had wanted a Yacht-Master for as long as I could remember, but could never justify the high price of buying new. Once I realized that buying pre-owned might be a smarter option, I searched around the internet, but only Bob's Watches made me feel comfortable with making such a large purchase online. I understood their business model, and past customers' reviews were very positive. The prices were competitive as well, and rivaled those of less-trustworthy dealers. Once I made my choice, there was a slight hiccup in the process to wire funds, but when I called in, the problem was quickly resolved.

I received my watch a few days later, and it looked stunning. When the site says "mint condition," it means it! Bob's was also able to tell me when the watch was last serviced, which (in combination with the one-year warranty) gives me peace-of-mind. As I look to expand my collection of watches, I'm sure I'll be a repeat customer of Bob's Watches."

"I have been shopping for the Rolex Yachtmaster for the better part of a year. I visited multiple jewelers & brokers in my area. Either they were of poor condition or over priced. Then I found Bobs Watches. The staff was expeditious and courteous. They sent me new photos of the watch upon request with no hesitation. The service, price, and condition of the watch was without compare. I am now a lifelong customer of Bobs Watches, I cannot imagine buying from any other source."

Rolex Submariner Reference 1680

Instantly recognizable for its three-piece links, robust construction, and flowing lines, the Oyster bracelet has been successfully paired with myriad Rolex models since its introduction in the 1940s—though we would argue that its best and most famous partnership has always been with the Submariner, Rolex’s flagship dive watch. Because while a Sub on a NATO strap, a rubber strap, or even on leather or a Jubilee bracelet is still a Sub, one paired with an Oyster bracelet is an icon .

Without delving too far into the weeds of every minute change to the Oyster bracelet over the years (and there have been many of those), we’re going to examine those references that were specifically paired to the Submariner. This guide should up your Rolex collecting game considerably. Perhaps the next time you glance down at the Rolex dive watch on your wrist, you’ll be inclined to pay this humble hunk of metal the respect it deserves.

A Brief History of the Oyster Bracelet

Initially, Rolex watches were sold on leather straps, with bracelets being an add-on accessory that could considerably raise the final price—in the 1930s, for example, customers could choose the Bonklip-style bracelet from Switzerland’s premier bracelet producer, Gay Frères. This Bonklip bracelet had lightweight steel links and straight end links. As Gay Frères was then an independent company, many other brands’ watches were also available on such bracelets. (Note that in 1998, when Rolex acquired Gay Frères in its entirety, the Oyster bracelet became an entirely in-house, Swiss-made product.)

The Gay Frères Bonklip bracelet is the predecessor to Rolex's Oyster bracelet.

Yet, as with many things Rolex , the Oyster bracelet didn’t emerge fully formed from the Earth’s womb on a single day to the fanfare of trumpets and the singing of angels. Rather, the Oyster bracelet evolved throughout the early part of the 20th century, taking the form of iterative configurations. This is where a collector needs to start paying close attention, as making sure you’ve got the right bracelet is as important as matching the paperwork and box to your collectible watch.

The Oyster Bracelet With Straight End-Links (1948-1951)

Rolex Oyster Perpetual

At first, it was chronographs and the famed “Bubblebacks” that received these Oyster bracelets. (The “Bubbleback,” so called due to its protruding caseback, was an early version of the waterproof, automatic, Oyster Perpetual watch.)

The Oyster Bracelet with Curved End Links (1952)

In 1952, however, the Crown introduced curved, form-fitting end links, marking a significant change that saw the Oyster bracelet produced in a variety of references for different watch models, including the Submariner, GMT-Master, and Explorer. At this time bracelets were sometimes made in the U.S.A. or Mexico for tax reasons, but since Rolex’s 1998 acquisition of Gay Frères Oyster bracelets are purportedly all Swiss-made.

First Generation Oyster Bracelets on the Submariner (1953-1966)

When viewed head-on, Oyster bracelets from the ‘50s through the modern era look rather similar—but turn one on its side, and the differences become more apparent. With the launch of the Submariner in 1953, two bracelets were offered that represent the earliest iterations of the now-famous accessory.

Oyster Bracelet 7206 Riveted “Flushfit”

The reference 7206 was a riveted model with “Flushfit” end links, in which each hollow link is held together with a visible rivet.

Oyster Bracelet 7206 Riveted “Flushfit”

Oyster Bracelet 7206 Stretch-Rivet “Flushfit”

Another option was the 6636 “stretch-rivet” model (also with “Flushfit” end links), which has an ingenious, spring-loaded mechanism that allows each link to separate slightly from its neighbors. (The stretch-rivet bracelet, in production from roughly 1953-1966, had a tendency to catch hair in between the links and proved not to be terribly sturdy.) Both of these models featured a fold-over clasp with a large Rolex coronet.

Second Generation Oyster Bracelet with Folded Links (1967-Mid 1970s)

Rolex reference 7836 “folded-link” Oyster bracelet

Note that the reference 9315 from roughly 1969, introduced on the Sea-Dweller and Submariner, featured a special diver clasp, while the reference 9316, from the same time and also with a diver clasp, was seen only on the Sea-Dweller.

Third Generation Oyster Bracelet with Solid Links (1972-2000)

In the mid-1970s—1972 by some collectors’ estimation, slightly later by others—the folded-link Oyster bracelets had been replaced by the first solid-link versions, which constitute the most robust (and still-used) of Rolex’s sport bracelet designs. Adding a zero to the previous generation reference numbers results in the reference 78360, which featured a folding clasp.

The reference 93150, which featured a diver clasp, shipped on the Submariner and was available as an option on the GMT-Master and Explorer, as well.

Note the solid links used on the reference 93150 Rolex Oyster bracelet. This added weight to the package.

The reference 93160 likewise featured a diver clasp and was paired with the Sea-Dweller.

Fourth Generation Oyster Bracelet with Solid End Links (2000-2010)

Around the turn of the millennium, Rolex began outfitting its Oyster bracelets with solid end links, which made for a more solid attachment point to the watch head. While Rolex watches previously featured holes in the side of each lug through which a tool could be used to eject the spring bars and remove the bracelet, the brand did away with these holes around 2003-2004, which resulted in another change to the end link design.

Solid 801 endlink on a mid-2000s oyster bracelet

End links, it should be noted, have their own numerical coding designation, allowing one to easily check whether a set is “correct” for a given bracelet or watch reference.

Fifth Generation Oyster Bracelet with Oysterlock and Glidelock (2010-present)

Rolex Oyster Glidelock System on Oyster bracelet

The Oysterlock, which comes standard on the Submariner bracelet, uses a folding safety clasp, cover, and safety catch, while the Glidelock extension system allows the bracelet length to be extended in 2 mm intervals in order to fit over a wetsuit—or even a swollen wrist after a flight or a salty meal.

Watches In The Wild The Road Through America, Episode 1: A Model Of Mass Production

There is big news, and there is Rolex big news, and in some ways, ne'er the twain shall meet. At Baselworld this year, Rolex debuted a first for the company: the very first, ever, Rolex delivered on a rubber strap. Now, for most companies this would have little effect on watch enthusiasts other than to evoke (very) tepid interest at best, and boredom at worst – but this is not an ordinary rubber strap, this is an official, designed-and-tested-and-thoroughly-obsessed-over-by-Rolex rubber strap. And thereby hangs a tale.

rolex yachtmaster flex

The Yachtmaster, as we have mentioned in some of our previous coverage , occupies a somewhat particular place in Rolex’s lineup of sports watches; it shares water-resistance and a turning bezel with the Submariner (the latter is water resistant to 300 m while the Yachtmaster standard model is water resistant to 100 m). It is certainly not a tool watch; the Yachtmaster is offered in either platinum and steel, or gold and steel (that’s Rolesium and Rolesor, lest we forget) and is either quietly or unequivocally luxurious depending on what size and metal you go for (Rolex makes the Yachtmaster in both 35 mm and 40 mm sizes).

The Yachtmaster’s history goes back to the first introduction of the watch in 1992, although the name, interestingly enough, appears on the dial of a prototype Yachtmaster Chronograph from the late 1960s (a watch so legendary I am actually forced to use the word; one of three known is in the collection of Mr. John Goldberger; we covered it – and a host of other remarkable ultra-rare watches from his collection – in a very memorable episode of Talking Watches ).

rolex yachtmaster flex

The term “Yachtmaster” is also, incidentally, used for a certificate of competency in yachting which is issued by the Royal Yachting Association, although we’re unaware of any specific association between the RYA and the Yachtmaster watch.

Now, this newest version of the Yachtmaster does take a few pages from the existing Yachtmaster playbook: 100-meter water resistance, a bidirectional turning bezel, and a dial and hands that echo the Submariner. There are also a couple of features that may make vintage Sub enthusiasts wonder if Rolex mightn’t have an exceedingly subtle sense of humor; the gilt coronet and “Rolex,” and the red lettering, both features which according to HODINKEE founder Ben Clymer would have, had they appeared on a Rolex dive watch, made it instantly the single most popular watch in the modern Rolex inventory. The case is rose gold – Rolex famously makes their own, called Everose, in their own foundry, with a bit of platinum mixed in to prevent discoloration – and the bezel, rather than being some other precious metal (as is the case in the “standard” Yachtmasters) is in black Cerachrom – a very technical-looking matte black that contrasts sharply with the gold case. Somehow, between the rose gold, the Cerachrom bezel, and the new Oysterflex bracelet this manages to be the most luxurious and at the same time most technical Yachtmaster yet (leaving aside the Yachtmaster II, which we recently reviewed right here , but that is a watch that marches to the beat of a different drummer entirely).

rolex yachtmaster flex

The two different versions of the Everose Yachtmaster (40 mm and 37 mm) sport different movements; the larger uses the caliber 3135 and the smaller, the newer 2236, which sports the “Syloxi” silicon balance spring (first used by Rolex in 2014).

rolex yachtmaster flex

The Oysterflex bracelet is, in a nutshell, quite a piece of work. One of the most endearing traits of Rolex as a company is that it tends to demonstrate what we can only describe as a laudable degree of corporate obsessive-compulsive disorder when it comes to research and development, and it does so, often, without making any sort of fanfare about it at all. In this case we do know a little bit about the Oysterflex, however – it is basically designed to have the hypoallergenic and comfort properties of a rubber strap and the durability and shape-retention properties of a bracelet.

At the core of the Oysterflex bracelet are metal inserts made of titanium and nickel, which are used to affix the bracelet to the clasp and watch case; over those is a sheathing of “high-performance black elastomer.” “Elastomer” is a portmanteau word, formed from “elastic” and “polymer” and is a general term for natural and synthetic rubbers. In addition to the materials complexity of the Oysterflex bracelet, it is also shaped in a rather unusual fashion – there are ridges molded into the the wristward face of the bracelet, which are intended to allow the bracelet when worn to better approximate the natural curvature of the wrist.

rolex yachtmaster flex

They might look a bit odd but in practice, the design works out quite wonderfully; this is easily the most downright comfortable and organic-feeling rubber strap I have ever worn, and like the entire watch manages to be both extremely technical in feel, and very luxurious at the same time; I doubt whether any company has ever taken so much trouble over the design of a strap (for all that Rolex prefers the term “bracelet” in describing the Oysterflex, habit dies hard and you’ll probably find yourself calling it a strap, just as we did). On the wrist, the two stabilizing ridges do exactly what they are supposed to: keep the watch from shifting, as heavier watches on rubber straps are wont to do, without requiring you to have the strap uncomfortably tight. The Everose Oysterlock clasp does a superb job mechanically and also looks fabulous into the bargain; the quality of finish on the clasp and case may not seem terribly elaborate at first, but it is as technically flawless as anything I have ever seen at any price, on any watch.

rolex yachtmaster flex

What we have here, in other words, is a very Rolex interpretation of luxury. Yes, this is a gold watch, and a gold Rolex, and wearing a gold Rolex always carries with it, shall we say, certain semiotic complexities. However there is also another side to the watch, and to the Rolex approach to luxury in general: the taking of such pains to produce technical perfection that technical perfection becomes a luxury in itself.

The stealthy excellence of the Rolex Yacht-Master 42 in white gold (ref. 226659)

The stealthy excellence of the Rolex Yacht-Master 42 in white gold (ref. 226659)

If you weren’t paying close attention you could easily miss the new Rolex Yacht-Master 42 in white gold. And I mean that in the best way. It’s a handsome timepiece, with a quiet presence that (despite its newness) feels reassuringly familiar in some hard-to-define way.

Despite being 2mm bigger than its Everose Gold brother (and a 42mm Oyster case wears quite big), it’s the opposite of in your face. In fact, thanks to the monochrome colour scheme of the dial, bezel and case, and the matt black Oysterflex strap, it may be the most discreet model in Rolex’s entire line-up.

rolex yachtmaster flex

I’m not suggesting that it can’t be a love-at-first-sight piece – but the more closely you look, the greater the rewards. The absence of colour draws your eye to the details, and emphasises the play of shiny and matt surfaces: the fine band of polished notches around the outer edge of the bezel contrasts with the matt Cerachrom insert, which in turn plays against the shine of the black lacquer dial. The polished surfaces of the raised numerals on the bezel (they are an integral part of the bezel, moulded with the ceramic, rather than applied) cast barely-there shadows on the surrounding matt surface. And when the light plays over the highly polished case-side, with its seamless cutaway from lugs to crown guards – well, it’s a beautiful thing. The curve is perfect and the white gold has a visual softness that you just don’t get with steel or platinum.

The matt black rubber Oysterflex strap is the Goldilocks element, tying everything together in just-right harmony (whereas the hardness and shine of a metal bracelet could throw things off-balance visually).

rolex yachtmaster flex

Having been introduced in 2015, the Oysterflex strap is no longer news but it’s worth revisiting because it’s such a great piece of design – possibly the most comfortable watch strap known to mankind. That’s thanks to the tiny, flexible ‘blades’ hidden on the underside between a pair of longitudinal cushions. The effect is a feeling of extraordinary lightness on the wrist (balanced in this case by the pleasant heft of the white gold case), absolute stability and … no sweat. Literally, since the air can circulate between skin and strap. The folding clasp has an integrated extension system that enables you to adjust it in 2.5mm increments, up to a total of about 15mm – instantly and without tools.

rolex yachtmaster flex

On the dial, simplicity of the markers and their assertive size make it highly legible (again, with no colour to distract the eye – not even the line of red text that appears on other Yacht-Masters). Thanks to the Chromalight lume (which glows blue in the dark) none of this clarity is lost at night.

Rolex scores more points by bringing its new-generation Calibre 3235 (launched last year) into the Yacht-Master range for the first time – a technical step up from the Everose Gold model. The key attributes of cal.3235: the patented Chronergy escapement, designed to maximise energy efficiency and made of magnetically neutral nickel-phosphorus, and the Parachrom hairspring, resistant to shocks and also paramagnetic. The benefit: accuracy of +2/-2 seconds per day (tested after casing), more than twice the standard chronometer specification.

rolex yachtmaster flex

As we expect from Rolex, this is an exceedingly well built and tremendously practical watch, ideally suited to everyday sporting wear. Although it’s water-resistant to 100 metres, it’s designed for above-water not underwater life. The bezel is bi-directional; it’s Yacht-Master, not Dive-Master. It’s not a tool watch. So while I briefly thought – as I’m sure many of you did – “Why not steel?” I no longer ask that (rhetorical) question. White gold is entirely appropriate and, in this handsomely sporty monochrome package, it’s the stealth Rolex par excellence.

An Overview of the Oysterflex Rolex Watches

rolex yachtmaster flex

I’ll admit, when I first saw the Oysterflex bracelet back in 2015, I was not a fan. With its imposing black color and sporty rubber profile, it was just so un-Rolex. But fast-forward a few years later, and the Oysterflex style has grown on me. I don’t know if I would go as far as to say that I would wear one regularly, but I do admire what Rolex created. After all, the Oysterflex is not merely a rubber strap (this is Rolex we’re talking about), but a thoughtfully crafted bracelet that combines the advantages of elastomer and metal.

While the Oysterflex was initially exclusively available with the Yacht-Master 37 and Yacht-Master 40 watches, Rolex has rolled out this sporty black bracelet to other models, including Yacht-Master 42, Daytona, and Sky-Dweller watches. Here’s a comprehensive overview of the Oysterflex Rolex watches, including an explanation of design, sizes, and prices.

What is Rolex Oysterflex

Rolex is careful to call the Oysterflex a bracelet and not a strap, and once you understand its construction, you’ll see why. The patented design consists of a titanium and nickel-alloy blade clad in black elastomer. The result is much of the same durability as a metal bracelet, with the flexibility and comfort of a rubber strap. Regardless of what Rolex calls it, enthusiasts do refer to it as an Oysterflex strap almost as often as an Oysterflex bracelet.

Style-wise, rather than just a smooth finish, the exterior of the band includes a raised center for an attractive tiered surface. If you take a look at the underside of the Oysterflex, Rolex added wing-like rubber components. These curved cushions raise the rubber away from the skin slightly to allow for much-needed airflow. They also serve to stabilize the watch and help keep it centered on the wrist.

Like most Rolex bracelets, the Oysterflex bracelet tapers slightly as it meets the solid gold Oysterlock safety clasp attached to it. The sturdy deployant clasp is equipped with the super practical Easylink extension system, which permits wearers to lengthen the bracelet by around 5mm for a roomier fit.

Can You Buy Rolex Oysterflex?

You can only buy a Rolex Oysterflex bracelet (from Rolex) for a model that already comes paired with an Oysterflex bracelet. In short, you can buy a replacement Oysterflex bracelet. So this begs the question, which Rolex watches are available with an Oysterflex?

The Oysterflex made its debut in 2015 on the then-new Everose gold Yacht-Master models in 40mm (ref. 116655) and 37mm (ref. 268655) sizes, each fitted with a black dial. This particular bracelet was a solid choice for the new iterations of the luxurious yet sporty Yacht-Master models, as it matches the black Cerachrom ceramic bezels and black dials perfectly. Plus, the rubber coating is well suited for life at sea, since it can stand up to salty waters and long-term sun exposure.

Following the introduction of the Oysterflex on the Yacht-Master, Rolex rolled out this particular bracelet style to select Daytona models in 2017. Additionally, Rolex has used it to replace all of the leather strap options within their Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona collection. Today, the Everose gold Daytona ref. 116515LN, the yellow gold Daytona ref. 116518LN, and the white gold Daytona ref. 116519LN all sport the innovative black Oysterflex bracelet. The sporty black rubber Oysterflex band looks especially great with Rolex’s famed sports chronographs – regardless of the case metal.

Finally, in 2020, the Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller was the latest Rolex watch collection to receive the Oysterflex bracelet treatment. You can find it on the Everose gold Sky-Dweller 326235 and the yellow gold Sky-Dweller 326238.

Rolex Watch Models with Oysterflex

  • Rolex Yacht-Master
  • Rolex Daytona
  • Rolex Sky-Dweller

It’s worth noting that the Oysterflex bracelet is currently only available on gold Rolex watch models, including yellow gold, white gold, and rose gold. Whether or not Rolex decides to furnish steel watches (or another precious metal watch like platinum) with Oysterflex bracelets in the future remains to be seen.

How Much Does a Rolex Oysterflex Cost?

If you buy a Rolex Oysterflex bracelet replacement, it’ll cost you around $250 per side. Since the Oysterflex bracelet comes with two separate pieces, each side is sold separately and the solid gold clasp is a separate (and significant) additional charge.

Since the Yacht-Master, Daytona, and Sky-Dweller have different case sizes, Oysterflex bracelets come in four different widths:

  • 18mm to fit the 37mm Yacht-Master (Bracelet Code 350557, Part # B218-106-x)
  • 20mm to fit the 40mm Yacht-Master and Daytona (Bracelet Code 350501, Part # B218-105-x)
  • 21mm to fit the 42mm Yacht-Master Bracelet Code 351525, Part # B218-107-x)
  • 22mm to fit the 42mm Sky-Dweller (Bracelet Code 351860, Part # B218-108-x)

Each side of the bracelet comes in six different lengths, which are categorized from letters C to H. The “x” in the above part numbers would be replaced with a size letter C, D, E, F, etc.

Remember, Rolex does not sell Oysterflex bracelets to pair with Rolex watches that don’t originally come with an Oysterflex. The company will simply sell you a replacement for an already existing bracelet.

The (retail) costs of Oysterflex bracelet Rolex watches are as follows:

  • Everose gold Yacht-Master 37 ref. 268655: $24,050
  • Everose gold Yacht-Master 40 ref. 126655: $28,050
  • White gold Yacht-Master 42 ref. 226659: $29,650
  • Yellow gold Yacht-Master 42 ref. 226658: $28,300
  • Yellow gold Daytona ref. 16518LN: $29,200
  • White gold Daytona ref. 116519LN: $30,500
  • Everose gold Daytona ref. 116515LN: $30,500
  • Yellow gold Sky-Dweller ref. 326238: $40,000
  • Everose gold Sky-Dweller ref. 326235: $41,400

Is Rolex Oysterflex Comfortable?

At first glance, the Oysterflex bracelet looks like a standard black rubber strap. However, the Oysterflex bracelet is not a simple rubber strap – as mentioned, it consists of a titanium and nickel alloy metal blade at its core, which is then wrapped with black elastomer. What’s more, for comfort, airflow, and stability, the underside of the band includes cushion segments to lift the rubber surface slightly above the skin.

Depending on the model, the Oysterflex is furnished with various clasps and extension systems to perfect the wearer to increase the bracelet length for added comfort and better fit.

  • Cosmograph Daytona – Folding Oysterlock safety clasp with Easylink extension
  • Yacht-Master – Oysterlock safety clasp with Glidelock extension system
  • Sky-Dweller – Folding Oysterclasp with Glidelock extension system

The Easylink permits the wearer to increase the bracelet length by approximately 5mm. On the other hand, the Glidelock permits micro-adjustment of the bracelet length by around 15mm, in increments of 2.5mm.

If you like luxury watches with rubber straps, then the Rolex Oysterflex is arguably one of the best-designed options in the market that offers fantastic comfort. It’s not often that Rolex SA unveils a completely new design and this highly innovative one is a worthy addition to the brand’s bracelet collection, joining the likes of the famous Oyster, Jubilee, and President bracelets.

Rolex Oysterflex bracelet

Rolex first presented the Oysterflex bracelet in 2015 on the Yacht-Master 116655 in rose gold, which came to become the first-ever Rolex watch to feature this new strap. Rolex is a traditional brand, but one that is consistently looking to innovate and improve. Before the launch of the Oysterflex, rubber straps had become extremely trendy (and still are).

Rolex listened to the market and understood what it liked, but didn’t just want to hop on this trend by releasing a generic, basic rubber strap like so many other watch brands had done.

Rolex puts great importance on calling the Oysterflex a bracelet and not a strap. Of course, this has more to do with marketing and distinguishing itself, but there is some level of truth to this statement. This is because the Oysterflex strap has been designed with metal blades made of titanium and nickel alloy, which are then over-molded by black elastomer. The result of this construction is a rubber strap that is more stable and sturdy than regular rubber straps. We won’t go into the complete history and background of the Oysterflex in this article, but if you want to learn more, you can read our complete Oysterflex guide here .

Since the release of the first Rolex watch with an Oysterflex bracelet in 2015, Rolex has made numerous new models and references available with the rubber strap. Perhaps the most significant release is in 2017 when Rolex presented a whole new Daytona series, specifically with the Oysteflex bracelet, all made in full 18ct gold.

Later on, 2021 saw another important release which is the Sky-Dweller on the Oysteflex bracelet. This also marked the first time that a Sky-Dweller watch was made available with an Oysterflex bracelet.

The Oysterflex bracelet has been met with great response by the market for its sporty and versatile look, and this is also why Rolex has decided to continue to build on this popularity. With this in mind, it’s probably safe to say that we’ll also see more models with the Oysterflex bracelet in the future.

Without further ado, below we have compiled a list of all the Rolex watches that are fitted with the Oysterflex bracelet. The Oysterflex family is not huge, but it is growing.

Note that many of the models below are available with a selection of many different dial designs. But because the models are at their core the same reference and model regardless of the dial option, we have only included one example for each reference.

A Comprehensive Guide to the Rolex Yacht-Master Collection

  • August 14, 2024 2:06 PM / Updated: August 14, 2024 2:06 PM

Digital Team

The Rolex Yacht-Master collection is a beacon of luxury and performance, a testament to Rolex’s commitment to excellence in nautical timepieces. Since its inception, the Yacht-Master has embodied the spirit of the open sea, blending robust functionality with sophisticated design. In this guide, we’ll explore the history, key features, variations, and what makes the Yacht-Master an iconic choice for watch enthusiasts and sailors alike.

rolex yachtmaster flex

The Origins of the Rolex Yacht-Master

The Yacht-Master was introduced in 1992, a relatively recent addition to Rolex’s storied lineup. However, its roots can be traced to the brand’s deep association with sailing and water sports. Rolex’s relationship with the sea began in the 1950s with the creation of the Submariner. Still, the Yacht-Master was designed to cater specifically to the needs of professional sailors and yachters.

The Yacht-Master was not just a tool watch but also a statement of luxury, designed to be as comfortable in a yacht club as it was on the deck of a racing boat. Its creation marked Rolex’s commitment to merging the world of high performance with high-end elegance.

Key Features of the Yacht-Master Collection

The Yacht-Master collection is distinguished by several key features that make it stand out from other Rolex models:

Bidirectional Rotatable Bezel:

Unlike the Submariner, which features a unidirectional bezel, the Yacht-Master’s bidirectional rotatable bezel is crafted from precious metals like platinum or 18k gold. The bezel is engraved with raised numerals, offering both functionality and an element of luxury. This bezel allows for precise time tracking during sailing activities.

High-Visibility Dial:

The Yacht-Master is designed with a high-contrast dial for optimal legibility, even in the most challenging conditions. The hands and hour markers are filled with Chromalight, Rolex’s proprietary luminescent material, which ensures visibility in low-light situations.

Oysterflex Bracelet:

A defining feature of the Yacht-Master 40 and 42 models is the Oysterflex bracelet, introduced in 2015. This bracelet combines the robustness of a metal bracelet with the comfort of an elastomer strap. It is reinforced with a metal blade, covered with high-performance black elastomer, and features a patented longitudinal cushion system stabilizing the wristwatch.

Water Resistance:

The Yacht-Master is designed to withstand the rigors of the sea, with a water resistance of up to 100 meters (330 feet). This makes it a reliable companion for both sailing and everyday activities.

Caliber 3235 Movement:

The Yacht-Master is powered by the Rolex Caliber 3235, a movement known for its precision, reliability, and robust performance. It features a Paramagnetic blue Parachrom hairspring, high-performance Paraflex shock absorbers, and a power reserve of approximately 70 hours.

Variations in the Yacht-Master Collection

The Yacht-Master collection offers a range of models to suit different tastes and preferences. Here’s a look at some of the most notable variations:

Yacht-Master 40:

The Yacht-Master 40 is the most popular size, perfectly balancing functionality and elegance. Available in various materials, including Everose gold, platinum, and stainless steel, the Yacht-Master 40 is versatile and suitable for both men and women.

Yacht-Master 42:

Introduced in 2019, the Yacht-Master 42 features a larger case size, making it a bold statement piece. This model is exclusively available in white gold paired with the Oysterflex bracelet. Its larger size appeals to those who prefer a more substantial presence on the wrist.

Yacht-Master 37:

For those with smaller wrists or who prefer a more understated look, the Yacht-Master 37 is an excellent choice. This model retains all the key features of the larger Yacht-Masters but in a more compact and elegant package.

Yacht-Master Rolesium:

Rolesium is a unique material combination exclusive to Rolex, featuring a stainless steel case with a platinum bezel. The Yacht-Master Rolesium models offer a distinctive aesthetic, combining steel’s durability with platinum’s luxury.

Yacht-Master II:

The Yacht-Master II, introduced in 2007, is a highly specialized version of the Yacht-Master. It features a programmable countdown timer with mechanical memory designed for professional sailors. With a 44mm case, the Yacht-Master II is larger and more technically advanced than its counterparts, making it the ultimate regatta chronograph.

Why Choose the Yacht-Master?

The Yacht-Master is more than just a luxury timepiece; it symbolizes adventure, precision, and elegance. Here are a few reasons why the Yacht-Master stands out:

  • Versatility: The Yacht-Master’s design allows it to transition seamlessly from the deck of a yacht to a formal dinner. Its blend of sportiness and sophistication makes it a versatile addition to any watch collection.
  • Craftsmanship: Rolex’s commitment to excellence is evident in every aspect of the Yacht-Master, from the precise movement to the luxurious materials used in its construction.
  • Heritage: As part of the Rolex family, the Yacht-Master carries the brand’s rich history and association with sailing and exploration.
  • Investment Value: Like many Rolex models, the Yacht-Master holds its value well over time, making it a wise investment for collectors.

Final Thoughts

The Rolex Yacht-Master collection is a testament to Rolex’s mastery in creating timepieces that combine luxury, performance, and timeless design. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or a watch enthusiast looking for a versatile and elegant timepiece, the Yacht-Master offers something for everyone. With its rich history, exceptional craftsmanship, and diverse range of models, the Yacht-Master continues to be a symbol of nautical excellence and a prized possession for those who appreciate the finer things in life.

In 1958, the brand partnered the New York Yacht Club, creator of the legendary America's Cup. Rolex then formed partnerships with several prestigious yacht clubs around the world and became associated with major nautical events - offshore races and coastal regattas. These strong ties culminated in 1992 with the launch of the Yacht-Master.

The Yacht-Master has been sharing the stage with other popular Rolex models like the Submariner and Sea-Dweller since 1992. But unlike its deep-diving brethren, the Yacht-Master is the premier timepiece for skippers. Thanks to a wide range of available case sizes - from 37 to 42 mm - the Rolex Yacht-Master is a perfect fit for most wrists.
