Coast Guard crews responded to the sinking of a fishing vessel.

Florida Dr. Scott Anthony Burke, the 69-year-old yachtsman who police say they busted with more than 40 grams of cocaine and 14 grams of ketamine last week, was holding a party on board a boat last week as he faces terminal cancer, according to his lawyer.

"To have this man potentially spend the rest of his life waiting for a case in jail, to me, would be very, very tragic," the lawyer said, in reference to his client's illness.

Burke is facing drug and gun charges after police boarded his vessel last week in response to a report of a woman possibly overdosing. In the bedroom with the woman, they found cocaine and a pistol, and a search warrant allegedly turned up a substantial amount of drugs and another gun which the doctor didn't have a license for. 

His attorney Henry Brennan told the Nantucket Current that additional allegations from an anonymous law enforcement source that prostitutes were on board is "disgusting" slander.

The woman on board was a friend of Burke's hired captain, Brennan told the paper, and a staff member.

"There was a party on the boat, and [Burke] was spending time with friends," he said. "As we suggested, the boat is large. He has a captain. He has staff. There was a cook. And sometimes there are people who serve as staff waiters, cleaners and things like that."

Police responded to Burke's boat, the Jess Conn, last Tuesday after an unidentified reporting party called their non-emergency dispatch line. Burke's 80-foot Nordhavn trawler has been visible in Nantucket Harbor for days after his arrest.

When first responders arrived in the master bedroom to look at the victim, they spotted a bag of cocaine on the nightstand and a loaded pistol on a bookshelf, according to the incident report.

After obtaining a search warrant, police went back and say they recovered 43.4 grams of cocaine and 14.1 grams of ketamine.

Neither Burke nor his attorney could immediately be reached for comment.

The doctor was one of the first international doctors to reach Haiti in 2010 following a devastating earthquake and performed more than 100 surgeries there, his lawyer told the judge at his bail hearing, according to the Current.

A source close to the investigation reportedly told the Nantucket Current that authorities also encountered prostitutes on board, but police have not confirmed that claim, and court records do not show any prostitution-related charges against Burke.

"That's certainly not in my press release," Lt. Angus MacVicar, the Nantucket Police Department's public information officer, told Fox News Digital.

Burke allegedly told police he had a license for the handguns — but police said his Florida license was not only invalid in Massachusetts, it expired last year. He now faces a dozen gun and drug charges and was released on $200,000 bail.

Public records show Burke obtained his medical license in Colorado in 1981. It was last renewed in 2019. He has owned at least two other large vessels over the years, 90 and 58 feet long, also named Jess Conn. 

According to his LinkedIn profile, Burke also founded a medical lien service firm called Injury Finance in 2003 and as a physician specialized in spine rehab and pain. His bio said he retired from active medical practice.

The investigation remains ongoing, but police declined to comment on potential additional charges.

Search Warrant: "Pornographic Films" Allegedly Made On Yacht Raided By Police In Nantucket Harbor

New details have emerged on last week’s police raid of the 80-foot motor yacht Jess Conn in Nantucket Harbor that led to the arrest of its owner, Scott Burke, on drug and gun charges.

The Current  on Wednesday obtained the Nantucket Police Department’s application for the search warrant that was executed on the Jess Conn. The document revealed how public safety officials were notified about the woman in distress aboard the vessel, what allegedly took place on the boat in the days leading up to the raid, and described Burke’s alleged lack of cooperation with police after they boarded the yacht.

According to the affidavit in support of the search warrant signed by Nantucket Police Department detective Amanda Schwenk, the woman who was later removed from the vessel by authorities and taken to the hospital had been Facetiming with a male friend all night. The friend was the one who initially alerted authorities to the situation aboard the yacht last Tuesday morning. He told police he believed his friend had overdosed because the woman told him she wanted to get off the boat, passed out, and that the call had dropped.

The woman allegedly had told him that “they were doing drugs all weekend long and people on the boat had been making pornographic films" which the man then relayed to police. The drugs, according to the man, were ketamine, Adderall, ecstasy, and cocaine.

Burke's attorney, Hank Brennan, told the Current that the man's statements to authorities were inconsistent and were motivated by his prior relationship with the woman.

"He’s a bitter ex-boyfriend who was upset she wouldn’t come see him and I wouldn’t put much stock in anything he has to say," Brennan said. "His accounts are inconsistent."

The woman told police that "she did not feel safe and was afraid to be on the boat," according to the affidavit.

Many details within the warrant have already been reported – including that the woman was located by the responding authorities in a bedroom, guns and drugs were spotted in plain sight, and the woman being transported to Nantucket Cottage Hospital for further treatment.

Police said in the affidavit that when they attempted to speak to Burke initially, he was “extremely uncooperative” and that due to his behavior and lack of cooperation, was placed in handcuffs and detained.

Burke told police the woman who had overdosed was an employee of his who was hired three to four weeks prior and that there was another female friend staying on the boat as well.

The women's identities were listed in the search warrant affidavit, but the  Current is not publishing their names.

Burke denied any knowledge of illegal narcotics on the yacht, including those in the bedroom. The two women were also asked by police about the drugs found onboard and they denied knowing anything aside from one of them claiming she had a medical prescription for Adderall.

According to the return of the search warrant, police also seized a Dell laptop, a Motorola cell phone, and two Apple iPads. Those items will undergo a forensic examination by law enforcement officials.

When the woman who was taken off the boat spoke to police after receiving treatment, she confirmed she had FaceTimed an ex-boyfriend that night and later confirmed she had spoken to the man who called the police.

Investigators, including a DEA special agent, boarded and searched the Jess Conn at 3:25 p.m. on September 5, according to court documents obtained by the Current . They confiscated 43.4 grams of cocaine, 14.1 grams of ketamine, and two pistols - a .380 Smith Wesson Shield and a 9mm Smith & Wesson - along with various ammunition.

After being read his Miranda rights following the initial boarding of the vessel Tuesday morning, Burke told police he was the owner of the boat, that the pistols belonged to him, and that he had a license to carry firearms. Police determined that Burke had a license to carry in Florida which had expired in September 2022.

Judge James Sullivan set Burke’s bail at $200,000 following a dangerousness hearing last Thursday in Plymouth District Court. Burke’s attorney, Henry Brennan, told the Current he expected the bail to be posted.

Brennan claimed during the detention hearing that Burke had a party on the yacht in Nantucket Harbor with over a dozen guests and that he was waiting for the captain of the vessel to return from a wedding on the day the raid occurred. The woman who required medical attention had allegedly asked Burke to stay an extra few days, and Brennan claimed when speaking to Sullivan “everybody had left the boat other than one woman.”

Burke is a retired physician who practiced in Colorado and founded Denver Spine and Rehab. He is currently the CEO of Injury Finance, LLC, which provides medical lien services for third-party liability claims.

Burke had a probable cause hearing scheduled for October 16. That hearing will be held on Nantucket.

Party Boat Owner Faces Drug and Gun Charges After Police Raid

The owner of a New England party yacht was arrested on drug and gun charges last week after Nantucket police raided the 80-foot Jess Conn when they were notified of a woman in distress on the vehicle.

An application for a search warrant says a friend of that woman, who had been Facetiming with her overnight, alerted police to the situation on board on September 5, according to the Nantucket Current .  He said the woman told him she wanted to get off the boat, but the call dropped. He believed she was overdosing.

She reportedly told her friend “they were doing drugs all weekend long and people on the boat had been making pornographic films” and that the drugs there were doing included ketamine, Adderall, ecstasy, and cocaine.

The woman was eventually taken off the boat and to a hospital.

Investigators boarded the boat just before 3:30 that afternoon, court documents say, and confiscated cocaine, ketamine, two pistols, and various ammunition. Scott Burke, the Jess Conn’s 69-year-old owner, was given a $200,000 bond at arraignment last Thursday.

His attorney, Hank Brennan, told the Current that the man who called police was a “bitter ex-boyfriend” of the woman and that he was “upset she wouldn’t come see him, and I wouldn’t put much stock in anything he has to say.”

The woman, however, told police that “she did not feel safe and was afraid to be on the boat,” court documents said.

Police said Burke was initially “extremely uncooperative” and that drugs and guns were lying about the boat in plain sight in the bedroom where the woman was found. He denied any knowledge of the drugs but admitted the guns were his, saying he had a license to carry firearms. Investigators later determined his Florida license to carry expired a year ago.

Brennan told the court on Thursday that Burke had a party on board the Jess Conn and that everyone had left the boat except the woman, who asked to stay a few more days. Brennan said Burke was waiting for the boat’s captain to return from a wedding on the day of the police raid.

Burke is a retired surgeon who practicted in Colorado and now lives in Florida. He is due in court again on October 16.

DEA Raid On Retiree's Yacht Finds Drugs, Guns and Sex Workers On Board

A Nordhavn 80 like the yacht in question

On Tuesday, the Drug Enforcement Administration raided a 70-foot yacht, the Jess Conn, anchored in Nantucket and reportedly found drugs, guns and sex workers on board. According to the Nantucket Current , they were tipped off after local police received a “report of a female party, on board a yacht , who did not want to be there, was under the influence of narcotics, and possibly has overdosed.”

The harbormaster and Nantucket Fire Department EMTs were reportedly able to get her off the boat and to a local hospital for treatment. A further search of the Jess Conn turned up 43.4 grams of cocaine, 14.1 grams of ketamine and two Smith & Wesson pistols. The owner, Scott Anthony Burke, a retired doctor from Key West, Florida, was arrested.

Look at that stain on the piles. I understand the hull is listing showing more waterline, But IMO, that was still driven up that bank. The bow bulb is out of the water like Diamond Head.. I'm sure there is a row of green markers, been so long I don't remember, Did the driver do the Liquordale inlet maneuver and turn stb to early?

You have to be brain dead to run this channel at anything above idle with a big boat…

My only time in there is ancient history. I assume it is a dead slow area. I can not make out that sign; Resume safe speed, slow speed or no swimming in the channel.

A 24 meter Nordhavn super yacht titled m/y Jess Jonn ran aground in Ocean Reef on the Florida Keys to the Southern part of Miami on May eight. The causes of the grounding are not confirmed, though in some forums and people knowledgeable of the area are suggesting then when tide is on the low side of things it is suggested you stay on your port side pushing to the red markers in that channel. Another unconfirmed rumour is that the owner was operating the yacht at the time of the accident. Thankfully the grounding seems to have made little or no damage to M/y Jess Conn as she was reported back underway on the 14th May heading North. M/y Jess Conn is hull one of the Nordhavn 80 which launched in 2021. A design of Vripack the Nordhavn 80 was presented as a project in 2017 as a model to fill the gap between the N76 and N86 models, with a three double cabins six berth guest accommodation and two or four crew berths layout, and is powered by twin Deere 375hp. Nordhavn has so far sold five N80 units.

I keep trying to fix the picture I'm not sure about that Jess Jonn name. I think mapism has the correct boat.

Now that we are all admitting to running perfectly good boats up on rocks and reefs: Summer 2018 we needed to get away for a week or two so we booked dockage at Islamorada's Lorelei Cabana Bar and Marina navigating down the ICW in good visibility, crystal clear daylight weather, with an up to date chart Garmin chart plotter, a sober captain and an alert Admiral. The route was pre planned and laid out as well as briefed, at a certain marker we turn to Port and take up a new heading to the next waypoint. We did exactly that and in the slow turn the boat jumped and shook to tell is we hit the bottom.. Unfortunately I turned on the wrong side of the marker, South of it rather than North. Fortunately the Albin 28TE has a skeg with a bronze or steel bar extending aft to protect the prop and rudder. (Brilliant Design, thx Albin. ) So, count me in as brain dead as well, but I can get away with it, no damage after a senior moment, life is good and the margaritas at Lorelei tasted good that evening.
